Résumé :
Historically, one of the central concerns that has plagued the field of teacher education is the observation that fragmentation characterizes the experience of learning to teach. Too often, university-based teacher education programs consist of a set of disconnected individual courses; separate clinical work from coursework; and lack a vision of teaching and learning. Therefore, some teacher educators have argued that creating structurally and conceptually coherent programs will result in more powerful learning for prospective teachers. Yet, although empirical work on such programs is growing, there is little research on the nature of coherence and on how it might develop. To that end, this article documents one teacher education program's efforts to become more coherent, focusing on the ways in which the program tries to become more coherent and on the challenges of coherence. The article concludes with implications for teacher education program design and evaluation, with a focus on the power, complexity, and problems of coherence.

Résumé :
Heat engines, which cyclically transform heat into work, are ubiquitous in technology. Lasers and masers may be viewed as heat engines that rely on population inversion or coherence in the active medium. Here we put forward an unconventional paradigm of a remarkably simple and robust electromagnetic heat-powered engine that bears basic differences to any known maser or laser: The proposed device makes use of only one Raman transition and does not rely on population inversion or coherence in its two-level working medium. Nor does it require any coherent driving. The engine can be powered by the ambient temperature difference between the sky and the ground surface. Its autonomous character and “free” power source make this engine conceptually and technologically enticing.

Résumé :
In Newtonian mechanics, any closed-system dynamics of a composite system in a microstate will leave all its individual subsystems in distinct microstates, however this fails dramatically in quantum mechanics due to the existence of quantum entanglement. Here we introduce the notion of a `coherent work process', and show that it is the direct extension of a work process in classical mechanics into quantum theory. This leads to the notion of `decomposable' and `non-decomposable' quantum coherence and gives a new perspective on recent results in the theory of asymmetry as well as early analysis in the theory of classical random variables. Within the context of recent fluctuation relations, originally framed in terms of quantum channels, we show that coherent work processes play the same role as their classical counterparts, and so provide a simple physical primitive for quantum coherence in such systems. We also introduce a pure state effective potential as a tool with which to analyze the coherent component of these fluctuation relations, and which leads to a notion of temperature-dependent mean coherence, provides connections with multi-partite entanglement, and gives a hierarchy of quantum corrections to the classical Crooks relation in powers of inverse temperature.

Résumé :
The two-point measurement scheme for computing the thermodynamic work performed on a system requires it to be initially in equilibrium. The Margenau–Hill scheme, among others, extends the previous approach to allow for a non-equilibrium initial state. We establish a quantitative comparison between both schemes in terms of the amount of coherence present in the initial state of the system, as quantified by the l1-coherence measure. We show that the difference between the two first moments of work, the variances of work, and the average entropy production obtained in both schemes can be cast in terms of such initial coherence. Moreover, we prove that the average entropy production can take negative values in the Margenau–Hill framework.

In this work, we investigate the dynamics of the coherence of two atoms trapped in one cavity with resonance and large detuned characters, respectively. By means of tracing over the freedom of the cavity, the evolution coherent state can be obtained. Subsequently, the coherence within the two different scenarios is discussed. Remarkably, an interesting result is obtained as the coherence can be enhanced to a large extent in the framework of large detuning. Besides, we find that there exists a distinctive phenomenon of recovery of the coherence with the interaction time of atom–cavity.

Résumé :
This article considers how young people actively participate in their own socialization process by following their journey through the weakly institutionalized vocational education and training (VET) programme for office work in Norway. The article explores the meaning-making strategies students use to construct coherent narratives when faced with uncertain school-to-work transitions. The study is based on qualitative longitudinal interviews, following the same students over a three-year period. They enter vocational education open-minded, yet confident in its future labour market advantages. Initially, they thrive and consider office work a viable career path; however, this enthusiasm is dampened gradually. Deprived of employment opportunities, they complete the apprenticeship and face poor job prospects in a labour market that favours higher education credentials. By reinterpreting vocational education as being of general utility within a discourse where extended transitions are considered normal, they neither appear regretful nor consider themselves deceived.

Résumé :
Recordings from primary motor cortex (M1) during periods of steady contraction show oscillatory activity; these oscillations are coherent with the activity of contralateral muscles. We investigated synchronization of corticospinal output neurons with the oscillations, which could provide the pathway for their transmission to the spinal motoneurons. One hundred seventy-six antidromically identified pyramidal tract neurons (PTNs) were recorded from M1 in three macaque monkeys trained to perform a precision grip task. Local field potentials (LFP) were simultaneously recorded. All analysis was confined to the hold period of the task, where our previous work has shown that there is the strongest oscillatory activity. Coherence was calculated between LFP and PTN discharge. Significant coherence was seen in three bands, with frequencies of 10–14, 17–31, and 34–44 Hz. Coherence values were low, with the majority of PTN–LFP coherences having a peak lower than 0.05. The phase of coherence was approximately −π/2 radians for each band (with LFP polarity defined as negative upward), although there was some dispersion of phase across the population of PTNs. Coherence was also calculated between pairs of PTNs that had been simultaneously recorded. Where there was significant coherence, it was also generally smaller than 0.05. The phase of PTN–PTN coherence clustered around zero radians. A computer model was constructed to assist the interpretation of the experimental results. It simulated an integrate-and-fire neuron responding to synaptic inputs. A fraction of the synaptic inputs was synchronized with a simulated LFP; the remainder were uncorrelated with it. The model showed that coherence between the LFP and the output spike train considerably underestimated the fraction of synchronized inputs. Additionally, for a given fraction of synchronized inputs, coherence was smaller for high- compared with low-frequency bins. Cell discharge rate also influenced the spike–LFP coherence: coherence was higher for simulations in which the cell discharged at a faster rate. Thus although levels of PTN–LFP coherence seen experimentally were low, a considerable proportion of the input to the PTN must be synchronized with the global oscillatory activity recorded by the LFP. The low LFP–PTN coherences do however indicate that cortical oscillations are transmitted with only low fidelity in the discharge of a single PTN. Using further computer simulations, it was demonstrated that a small population of PTNs could encode the cortical oscillatory signal effectively, since the action of averaging across the population improves the signal:noise ratio. The oscillations will therefore be effectively transmitted to spinal motoneurons, and this has important consequences for the possible role of oscillations in motor control of the hand.

Résumé :
Coherency filtering is a tool used commonly in 2-D seismic processing to isolate desired events from noisy data. It assumes that phase‐coherent signal can be separated from background incoherent noise on the basis of coherency estimates, and coherent noise from coherent signal on the basis of different dips. It is achieved by searching for the maximum coherence direction for each data point of a seismic event and enhancing the event along this direction through stacking; it suppresses the incoherent events along other directions. Foundations for a 2-D coherency filtering algorithm were laid out by several researchers (Neidell and Taner, 1971; McMechan, 1983; Leven and Roy‐Chowdhury, 1984; Kong et al., 1985; Milkereit and Spencer, 1989). Milkereit and Spencer (1989) have applied 2-D coherency filtering successfully to 2-D deep crustal seismic data for the improvement of visualization and interpretation. Work on random noise attenuation using frequency‐space or time‐space prediction filters both in two or three dimensions to increase the signal‐to‐noise ratio of the data can be found in geophysical literature (Canales, 1984; Hornbostel, 1991; Abma and Claerbout, 1995).

Résumé :
The embedded system-on-a-chip (SoC), that integrates heterogeneous processors with variation in coherence protocol, adds complexity in maintaining coherency in the data caches. It further complicates the task of coherence verification in such systems. This work targets effective solution for coherence verification in heterogeneous chip multiprocessors (CMPs) through introduction of highly efficient verification unit. It is developed around the modeling tool of cellular automaton (CA) invented by von Neumann in 1950s. The modular and cascadable structure of CA ensures high scalability and robustness in the proposed design. A CA segment is employed to analyze the states of a data block in different private caches of a heterogeneous processor cluster and to verify inconsistencies, if any, within the cluster. The outcomes of coherence verification for clusters are analyzed by the CA resulted out of augmentation of the CA segments. On the other hand, in this work, we further propose a CA-based coherence protocol processor (PP), which caters the need for determining the state of a data block with high accuracy. The PP designed for the heterogeneous CMPs, while computing the states of za block on every transaction (read/write), can capture defects, if any, and thereby realizes a fault-tolerant PP without introduction of additional hardware logic.

Résumé :
We study a scheme of thermal management where a three-qubit system assisted with a coherent auxiliary bath (CAB) is employed to implement heat management on a target thermal bath (TTB). We consider the CAB/TTB being ensemble of coherent/thermal two-level atoms (TLAs), and within the framework of collision model investigate the characteristics of steady heat current (also called target heat current (THC)) between the system and the TTB. It demonstrates that with the help of the quantum coherence of ancillae the magnitude and direction of heat current can be controlled only by adjusting the coupling strength of system-CAB. Meanwhile, we also show that the influences of quantum coherence of ancillae on the heat current strongly depend on the coupling strength of system—CAB, and the THC becomes positively/negatively correlated with the coherence magnitude of ancillae when the coupling strength below/over some critical value. Besides, the system with the CAB could serve as a multifunctional device integrating the thermal functions of heat amplifier, suppressor, switcher and refrigerator, while with thermal auxiliary bath it can only work as a thermal suppressor. Our work provides a new perspective for the design of multifunctional thermal device utilizing the resource of quantum coherence from the CAB.

Résumé :
Over the past few years, the concept of coherence as it applies to people's storied accounts of their lives has become an increasingly popular topic. However, theories of coherence have been slow to appear, and a comprehensive definition of the construct has yet to be presented by researchers. Moreover, almost no work has been done relating the concept of coherence to the particular form of the life story. Thus, the aims of the present study were twofold: first, to investigate whether it is possible to construct a reliable coding scheme for life story coherence, and second, to examine the relationships between life story coherence and mental health. The results of the study indicate that the life story coherence coding system is a reliable measure, and that the coherence construct is therefore amenable to quantitative analysis. The most important finding of this study was that, as predicted, life story coherence demonstrated a statistically significant relationship to psychological well-being. This finding thus lends statistical credibility to the claims of narrative psychologists, who argue that mental well-being is related to, if not the result of, a well-integrated and coherent life story.

Résumé :
Interferometric coherence from SAR data is a tool used in a variety of Earth observation applications. In the context of crop monitoring, vegetation indices are commonly used to describe crop dynamics. The most frequently used vegetation indices based on radar data are constructed using the backscattered intensity at different polarimetric channels. As coherence is sensitive to the changes in the scene caused by vegetation and its evolution, it may potentially be used as an alternative tool in this context. The objective of this work is to evaluate the potential of using Sentinel-1 interferometric coherence for this purpose. The study area is an agricultural region in Sevilla, Spain, mainly covered by 18 different crops. Time series of different backscatter-based radar vegetation indices and the coherence amplitude for both VV and VH channels from Sentinel-1 were compared to the NDVI derived from Sentinel-2 imagery for a 5-year period, from 2017 to 2021. The correlations between the series were studied both during and outside the growing season of the crops. Additionally, the use of the ratio of the two coherences measured at both polarimetric channels was explored. The results show that the coherence is generally well correlated with the NDVI across all seasons. The ratio between coherences at each channel is a potential alternative to the separate channels when the analysis is not restricted to the growing season of the crop, as its year-long temporal evolution more closely resembles that of the NDVI. Coherence and backscatter can be used as complementary sources of information, as backscatter-based indices describe the evolution of certain crops better than coherence.

Background: Nursing education is associated with high intensity work and potential burnout. Sense of coherence mitigates the effect of job stress and enhances work wellness. This study aims to identify work-related patterns of behavior and experience among nurse educators and examine the independent relationship between sense of coherence and workplace behavior patterns. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional descriptive design and a sample of 130 nurse educators teaching in the Faculty of Nursing, Alexandria University, Egypt. The nurse educators completed questionnaires measuring sense of coherence and work-related patterns of behavior and experience. Results: Discriminant analysis delineated four work behavior patterns: healthy (16.2%), frugal (1.5%), overburdened (68.5%), and burnout (13.8%). Sense of coherence was positively associated with the healthy work pattern (r = .66, p < .001), and negatively associated with the burnout (r = -.63, p < .001) and overburdened (r = -.18, p < .05) patterns. Regression analyses, controlling for years of teaching experience, indicated that a weak sense of coherence was associated with classification of nurse educators into the overburdened work pattern (B = -.05, SE = .12, Wald χ2 = 13.13, p < .001) and the burnout work pattern (B = -.10, SE = .02, Wald χ2 = 21.52, p < .001) compared to healthy work pattern.}Conclusions: The study findings highlight the importance of sense of coherence as a health-promoting resource in the workplace. Strategies are discussed for creating meaningful work experiences to reinforce a sense of coherence and simultaneously cultivate work-related wellness among nurse educators.

In this work, we investigate the witnessing of the localization of quantum states through quantum speed limits (QSLs) in a two-level driven avoided-level crossing system. As the characteristic natures of the localized quantum states, the QSL presents the periodic oscillations and coherence. The coherence partition of QSL is much bigger than the population partition of QSL. Our study gives us the possibilities to manipulate dynamics of quantum states locally by employing the coherent destruction of tunneling, which is significant in quantum information process. In addition, we analyze the effects of the rotating-wave approximation and the generalized Van Vleck approach on QSL and show that they wipe out the quantum coherence.

Résumé :
Maintaining and promoting teachers’ work ability is essential for increasing productivity and preventing early exit from the teaching profession. This study aimed to identify the predictors of work ability among upper-secondary school teachers and examine the mediating role of burnout. A large and diverse group of Czech upper-secondary school teachers was surveyed to address this goal. The sample comprised 531 upper-secondary school teachers (50.0 ± 9.94 years, 19.9 ± 10.62 in the teaching profession, 57.6% females). Relatively greater empirical support was found for the effects of burnout, sense of coherence, work–life balance, and perceived relationships in the school environment on work ability than for the impact of age, homeroom teacher duties, workload, and caring for elderly relatives. Furthermore, burnout served as an important mediator of the relationship between sense of coherence and work ability. Teachers with a higher sense of coherence are thus better able to cope with adverse work circumstances and identify and mobilize internal and external resources to prevent professional exhaustion and the subsequent decline in work ability. The study can guide interventions on the work ability of teachers.

How to analytically deal with the entanglement and coherence dynamics of separated Jaynes–Cummings nodes with continuous-variable fields is still an open question. We here generalize this model to a more common situation including either a small or large qubit-field detuning, and obtain two new analytical formulas. The X-state simplification, Fock-state shortcut and detuning-limit approximation work together in an amazingly accurate way, which agrees with the numerical results. The new formulas almost perfectly predict the two-qubit entanglement dynamics both in sudden death and rebirth phenomenon for detuning interactions. We find that when both the qubit-field detuning and amplitude of coherent states are large enough, the maximal entanglement and coherence peaks can be fully and periodically retrieved, and their revival periods both increase linearly with the increasing detuning.

Résumé :
Previous research has highlighted various antecedents of job insecurity, both in cross-sectional research and in a recent meta-analysis. A review of this literature indicates that work locus of control actually is the only personality antecedent that has received considerable attention, while sense of coherence may also be an important factor to consider. Data on biographical variables, cognitive and affective job insecurity, work locus of control and sense of coherence were gathered from employees across 3 organisations (N=718), presenting two different sectors (chemical industry and financial services), by means of anonymous surveys. Data were analysed by means of correlations and regression analyses. Results indicate that both work locus of control and sense of coherence play a role in predicting job insecurity, even after controlling for biographical variables. Considering their individual contributions, it is suggested here that sense of coherence may be even more important than work locus of control as a personality antecedent of job insecurity.

First, the role of polarization in electromagnetic coherence is significantly elucidated when the coherence Stokes parameters are used. Second, the normalized coherence Stokes parameters should be regarded as the true electromagnetic counterparts of the normalized scalar-field correlation coefficient.

Résumé :
The inability of workers to achieve balance between work and family responsibilities has led to heightened incidence of illnesses associated with stress. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the role of Sense of Coherence (SOC) on the achievement of work life balance by focusing on individual managers at a municipality in the South African public service. These individual managers often struggle with work-life balance (WLB) challenges like HIV/AIDS, relational tension, single parenthood, child and elder care, alcohol and substance abuse, debt and financial issues, absence of job autonomy, function vagueness/role conflict and job stress. A sequential transformative mixed methods research design is adopted. Data were collected using self-report questionnaire administered to 364 individual managers; additional eleven members of top management were interviewed. Quantitative data gathered are analyzed using the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 to test the reliability and validity of the instrument as well as the bivariate association between the variables. NVIVO is used in organizing qualitative data for ease of content analysis. The findings indicate that SOC should be considered when designing strategies to address employee work-life needs. Furthermore, it confirmed that the presence of strong SOC does not lead to achievement of WLB

Résumé :
Abstract Social work practice has an essential, yet ambiguous, relationship with theory. This state of affairs is currently evident in the range of contemporary relationship-based practice (RBP) models being applied within Child and Family Social Work. This article argues that there is an urgent need for a theoretically coherent conceptualisation of these models to enable social work practitioners to embrace their common precepts and so enable more effective interventions. In contrast to attempts to show the distinctiveness of current models for reasons of fidelity, model identity and marketing, this unifying approach advocates for recognition of the commonality and complementarity of contemporary RBP models. The article argues that systemic theory which applies a social constructionist orientation can provide this coherence, helping social workers develop their practice in an informed way. In making this case, the emergent evidence base is noted and recommendations are made about how greater convergence and complementarity can be promoted. This article contributes to the debate about how practice and policy should be guided by theoretical ideas of coherence, alongside more utilitarian ideas advocating the importance of evidence and effectiveness.

Résumé :
In this work, the propagation properties of partially coherent power-exponent-phase vortex beam are studied. Firstly, the propagation model of partially coherent power-exponent-phase vortex beam is established. Then, the propagation properties of partially coherent power-exponent-phase vortex beams in free space and ABCD optical system are simulated. The results show that when power-exponent-phase vortex beams propagate in free space, the topological charge, power order and coherence length have a great influence on the distribution of light intensity, and the area of light spot gradually increases with the increase of propagation distance. When the beam propagates in a focusing system, the changes of topological charge and power order will affect the light intensity distribution, while the coherence length has little effect on the overall intensity distribution of the beam, but only the quality of the spot. The research results of this work reveal the propagation properties of partially coherent power-exponent-phase vortex beam, which will lay a theoretical foundation for its applications in optical capture and other fields, and has important significance in promoting the theory and applications of new light field regulation.

Résumé :
In the study of collision processes, a series of conditions is usually assumed. One of them is that the beam of projectiles is coherent in lengths greater than those of the targets against which it strikes. However, recent experimental results and theoretical analyzes have shown that this assumption can not only fail, but that it is possible to manipulate the coherence length experimentally to go from a coherent situation to an incoherent one. The most conspicuous and studied manifestation of such loss of coherence is the disappearance of interference effects. However, in the present work we show that a strong decrease can also occur in the magnitude of the cross section, not only differential but also total, due to an atomic concealment effect.

A method based on wave optics together with electron tracking is used to analyze synchrotron radiation from a segmented undulator in a double or multi mini-β function lattice storage ring. Radiation brilliance and transverse coherence features are investigated, where the former is calculated with the Wigner distribution function and the latter is evaluated by integrating the photon flux and cross-spectral density to exhibit the coherent flux and overall degree of coherence. To be specific, radiation properties for a single undulator in a typically single mini-β function and a tandem undulator in a double mini-β y lattice are compared in this work. As a result, both, brilliance and coherent flux can be enhanced by a second tandem undulator at the Taiwan Photon Source.

Because phenomena observed in noise radiated from high-performance military aircraft are not fully understood, different analysis techniques can yield complementary insights into their characteristics. Here, a coherence analysis from a 120-microphone near-field array is used to identify and characterize the noise radiation and source-related properties of a T-7A-installed F-404-GE-103 engine over a broad range of frequencies. Some of the noteworthy findings include: a) coherence trends for mixing noise and spatiospectral lobes generally match those observed for previously studied aircraft; and b) bands of coherence between upstream and downstream locations are observed at higher engine powers, suggesting a coherent interaction between upstream broadband shock-associated noise radiation and downstream Mach wave radiation. Educational hypertext aims to improve the reader’s comprehension by providing flexible access to information. However, this flexibility imposes additional tasks upon a reader who is used to gaining information in a linear manner. One of these difficulties is in choosing the reading order of the hypertext sections. In the present work, we explore two possible strategies to decide the reading order in hypertext: strategies based on coherence and interest. Results of two laboratory experiments reveal that a semantically coherent reading order improves comprehension for novice readers. Finally, we focus on ways to analyze coherence of the reading order, and how to promote it in educational hypertexts.

Résumé :
“Imaginary texture”: opening sentences and coherence in Andrzej Stasiuk’s prose and its French translations The basic principle ensuring the cohesion and coherence of a text is the phenomenon of grammatical and semantic linkage of each sentence with the prior context. Evidently, this rule does not apply to the opening sentences of a work or, to a lesser extent, of its chapter. The subject of the article is the analysis of such opening sentences in selected works by Andrzej Stasiuk breaking out of this exception. They create the impression of false consistency with a prior, non-existent context by using a connector that opens them. The solutions applied in French translations reveal different tendencies for the construction of coherent relations. What is more, they indicate the complex factors underlying the translators’ decisions and cause modifications in the stylistic layer of the target text.

Résumé :
Elevated stress has been widely associated with physical and physiological threats as well as reduced work performance. However, there is still a lack of studies that investigate whether stress influences concurrently physiological and objective work performance. The purpose of this study is to examine whether workers’ level of stress or negative emotional symptoms correlates with their physiological coherence and work performance. Eighteen female operators who reported high severity levels of stress, assessed using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-42) were categorized as the risk group. The comparison group was formed by randomly selecting 18 of 99 female workers who had significantly lower DASS scores. Both participants attended one session of physiological measurement. Their work performance was observed by calculating their cycle time completing a product during five workdays. A significant difference in HRV between the two groups was also found in physiological and work performance measures. The results showed that workers in the risk group obtained significantly lower coherence levels and longer work cycle time than the control participants, indicating that negative emotional symptoms were parallel with physiological coherence and work performance. However, a weak correlation was found between work performance and negative emotional symptoms as well as physiological coherence. Despite the study limitations, our findings support to evidence the more complete picture of how stress affects female worker’s physiology and work performance, suggesting a need to implement effective workplace stress intervention. Further study is needed to be conducted among different group characteristics such as male and occupational settings.

Résumé :
Research on coping, sense of coherence, burnout, and work engagement is well documented in western countries. However, a void of studies exists on how coping mechanisms can moderate the relationship among sense of coherence, burnout, and work engagement in a manufacturing company in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The objective of this research was to examine the moderating effect of coping (COP) in the relationship between sense of coherence (SOC), burnout (BO), and work engagement (WE). The study employed a quantitative research approach, while participants were recruited through convenience sampling. A total of 197 employees (n = 197; females 40%) who are permanently employed in a manufacturing organisation in the DRC participated in the study voluntarily. The results indicate that coping related positively to a sense of coherence. Moreover, the results indicate that sense of coherence and work engagement related negatively to burnout. Furthermore, the results show that coping acted as a moderator in the relationships between variables. The study adds value to the WE theory by suggesting that an employee who has a high level of COP, high SOC, low level of BO, will positively engage, perform, and be productive.

Purpose This study aims to describe nurse leaders’ experiences of work-related well-being and its association with background variables, working conditions, work engagement, sense of coherence and burnout. Design/methodology/approach An electronic survey design was used. Data was collected between December 2015 and May 2016 with an instrument that included demographic questions and four internationally validated scales: the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, QPS Nordic 34+, the shortened Sense of Coherence scale and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Data was analysed using statistical methods. Findings A total of 155 nurse leaders completed the questionnaire, giving a 44% response rate. Most of them worked as nurse managers (89%). Participants’ work-related well-being scores ranged from 8 to 10. Statistically significant relationships were found between participants’ work-related well-being and their leadership skills, current position, sense of coherence and levels of burnout. In addition, there were statistically significant relationships between work-related well-being and all dimensions of working conditions. Originality/value This study underlines the fact that work-related well-being should not be evaluated based on a single factor. The participants’ perceived work-related well-being was high, although almost half of them reported always or often experiencing stress. The results suggest that nurse leaders may have resources such as good leadership and problem-solving skills, supportive working conditions and a high sense of coherence that prevent the experienced stress from adversely affecting their work-related well-being.

Résumé :
In this work the coherence properties of the synchrotron radiation beam from an X-ray undulator in a fourth-generation storage ring are analyzed. A slightly focused X-ray beam is simulated using a wavefront propagation through a non-redundant array of slits and the mutual coherence function is directly obtained and compared with the Gaussian–Schell approximation. The numerical wave propagation and the approximate analytical approaches are shown to agree qualitatively, and it is also shown that, when the coherent fraction is selected by a finite aperture before the focusing element, even achromatic focusing systems like total reflection mirrors become slightly chromatic. This effect is also well accounted for in the Gaussian–Schell model. The wavefront propagation simulation through the non-redundant array was repeated with an imperfect mirror demonstrating that, although the wavefront is distorted, its coherent length is practically unchanged.

Résumé :
Objective: To present athletic training educators with guidelines for developing coherent athletic training education programs. Background: Coherent athletic training education programs are marked by a clear relationship between program goals and learning activities. These learning activities follow a logical progression that facilitates knowledge and skill development and enhances professional preparation. Coherent programs also work to socialize athletic training students in purposeful and positive ways. We have identified fourteen indicators of coherence in teacher education programs that are applicable to athletic training education. Both teacher certification and athletic training programs are similar in that they serve as professional preparation for their respective fields and have practical application (i.e., clinical education or student teaching practicum) components. Description: Coherence begins with a clearly defined mission statement. The academic faculty and clinical staff/instructors strive to achieve the mission and goals of the athletic training education program. Next, the coursework must follow a logical progression to allow students to make connections between subject matter. Clinical learning experiences should compliment academic learning experiences. In addition, clinical education experiences should follow students' skill levels and needs. Finally, the students themselves are encouraged to interact with their fellow students and form learning communities. Clinical Advantages: Coherent education programs have the most potential to produce athletic trainers who are competent and well socialized into professional practice. We believe graduates of such programs are properly prepared to be certified athletic trainers.

Résumé :
In this work, we first deal with the modeling of game situations that reach one of possibly many Nash equilibria. Before an instance of such a game starts, an external observer does not know, a priori, what is the exact profile of actions -- constituting an equilibrium -- that will occur; thus, he assigns subjective probabilities to players' actions. Such scenario is formalized as an observable game, which is a newly introduced structure for that purpose. Then, we study the decision problem of determining if a given set of probabilistic constraints assigned a priori by the observer to a given game is coherent, called the PCE-Coherence problem. We show several results concerning algorithms and complexity for PCE-Coherence when pure Nash equilibria and specific classes of games, called GNP-classes, are considered. In this context, we also study the computation of maximal and minimal probabilistic constraints on actions that preserves coherence. Finally, we study these problems when mixed Nash equilibria are allowed in GNP-classes of 2-player games.

Résumé :
In Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry, one of the most widely used measures for the quality of the interferometric phase is coherence. However, in favorable conditions coherence can also be used to detect subtle changes on the ground, which are not visible in the amplitude images. For such applications, i.e., coherent change detection, it is important to have a good contrast between the unchanged (high-coherence) parts of the scene and the changed (low-coherence) parts. In this paper, an algorithm is introduced that aims at enhancing this contrast. The enhancement is achieved by a combination of careful filtering of the amplitude images and the interferometric phase image. The algorithm is applied to an airborne interferometric SAR image pair recorded by the SmartRadar experimental sensor of Hensoldt Sensors GmbH. The data were recorded during a measurement campaign over the Bann B installations of POLYGONE Range in southern Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany), with a time gap of approximately four hours between the overflights. In-between the overflights, several vehicles were moved on the site and the goal of this work is to enhance the coherence image such that the tracks of these vehicles can be detected as completely as possible in an automated way. Several coherence estimation schemes found in the literature are explored for the enhancement, as well as several commonly used speckle filters. The results of these filtering steps are evaluated visually and quantitatively, showing that the mean gray-level difference between the low-coherence tracks and their high-coherence surroundings could be enhanced by at least 28%. Line extraction is then applied to the best enhancement. The results show that the tracks can be detected much more completely using the coherence contrast enhancement scheme proposed in this paper.

Résumé :
Recent work suggests that the long-lived coherences observed in both natural and artificial light-harvesting systems (such as the Fenna–Matthews–Olson complex) could be attributed to the mixing of the pigments’ electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom. To investigate the underlying mechanism of these long coherence lifetimes, a sophisticated description of interactions between the molecular aggregates and the nonequilibrium fluctuations in the surrounding environment is necessary. This is done by implementing the hierarchical equations of motion approach on model homodimers, a method used in the intermediate coupling regime for many molecular aggregates wherein the nonequilibrium environment phonons play nontrivial roles in exciton dynamics. Here we report a character change in the vibronic states—reflective of property mixing between the electronic and vibrational states—induced by an interplay between system coupling parameters within the exciton-vibrational near-resonance regime. This mixing dictates vital aspects of coherence lifetime; by tracking the degree of mixing, we are able to elucidate the relationship between coherence lifetime and both the electronic energy fluctuation and the vibrational relaxation dephasing pathways.

Résumé :
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) is committed to strengthening relations between research and practice and to the development of a coherent knowledge base that is usable in practice. The fifth of NCTM's strategic priorities states, “Bring existing research into the classroom, and identify and encourage research that addresses the needs of classroom practice” (NCTM, 2008). The need to work toward connection and coherence is not unique to the field of mathematics education. Fields such as medicine (e.g., Clancy, 2007), software engineering (e.g., Gorschek, Garre, Larsson, & Wohlin, 2006), and social work (e.g., Hess & Mullen, 1995) routinely attend to these issues. Researchers in many fields strive to find new ways or to engage more effectively through existing means to enhance coherence and connection. In a sense, this is not a goal that can be achieved definitively, but one that requires persistent engagement. In education, the constant flux of variables in the system, such as curriculum, goals for student learning, and school contexts, requires that new connections between research and practice be investigated and that old connections be reexamined. Changes in educational contexts open new territory in need of study and also challenge the coherence of explanations grounded in previous research. In this way, attention of the field to connection and coherence is neither unique to mathematics education nor an effort due solely to inadequacies of research efforts in the past.
