Résumé :
The article is devoted to the phenomenon of women in the Constitutional Democratic Party from its very foundation up to the preparation of the organization for the elections to the Constituent Assembly in 1917. The author seeks to reconstruct a socio-cultural portrait of “cadet ladies”, to find out the factors that could have influenced their entry into the party and to characterize their activities in the organization. Special attention is paid to the position in the party hierarchy that women could occupy, as well as to the opportunities for advancement in it. Cadet ladies were mainly responsible for maintaining the organizationʹs welfare, housekeeping, logistics, events and charitable institutions, but at the same time were actively involved in key decision-making, although they did not have the same political rights as men. Moreover, women gained the right to vote after the February Revolution, the number of Cadet ladies in key party positions increased dramatically, which confirms their importance to constitutional democrats. Characteristic features of the socio-cultural portrait of the women of the Peopleʹs Freedom Party are also highlighted. Cadet ladies grew up in post-reform Russia, when social and economic changes in the country and society had a huge impact on the process of womenʹs emancipation. The opportunity to receive a quality education, acquire a profession and work, to choose a spouse out of mutual respect and similarity of views — all these served as factors for acquiring the subjectivity that later allowed the cadet ladies to become the political phenomenon discussed in this article.

Résumé :
This paper attempts to address women's empowerment in higher education in Nepal. This is a review paper based on a systematic review of women's empowerment through education. The dictionary definition of empowerment refers to giving power and status to an individual or group in a particular situation. Empowerment enables them to increase access to opportunities without limitations, such as in education, profession, and lifestyle. This paper uses a systematic review method to focus on the role of education in women's empowerment. For this purpose, nine articles were selected for systematic review from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses [PRISMA] model. The review materials that focused on the different dimensions of women’s empowerment, both theoretically and methodologically, were considered for systematic review. The systematic review results reveal that education is a precondition for women’s empowerment. However, most of the conclusions were based on census data covering women’s literacy rates, and their findings did not explicitly mention the indicators of women’s studies. Only a few studies assessed the dimensions of women’s empowerment, such as personal, economic, social, and political dimensions.

Résumé :
Home advantage (HA) is heavily researched in sports science, but the vast majority of prior studies have analyzed men's sports. Very few have either analyzed women’s sports competitions or compared HA results between men’s and women’s sports. Our aim in this paper was to show the importance of socio-cultural variables in calculating HA for women's sports. The HA gender gap (HAGG) may be linked in part to such socio-cultural predictors as gender equality, cultural globalization that may modulate competitive behaviour in women's sports and changes in the observed HA rates. We seek to advance a new proposed framework for calculating HA in women's sport and/or comparing HA across women’s and men's sports.

Résumé :
This article presents evidence that the construction of Islamic law is influenced by women's voices, experiences, and problems. It also offers a critique of the misogynistic narrative of Islamic law. Adopting a socio-historical approach with a women's perspective, this research demonstrates the inadequacy of current studies that argue that Islamic law places women in an inferior and subordinate position to men. Critical analysis of the asbabun nuzul text of the Qur'an is the primary analytical tool used in this study. Polygamy, khulu', zhihar, and inheritance are the four main issues examined, and the study shows that the complaints and advocacy of women played a critical role in shaping the Islamic law system. Women's perspectives serve as a spiritual foundation in the development of Islamic law and cannot be disregarded. By considering women's perspectives, fair benefits can be realised, and a sense of justice can be achieved for vulnerable groups, such as women. Keywords: Women’s rights, women’s perspectives, Islamic legal construction, discrimination

Résumé :
In the history of the Anglican Church the top-ranked issue of the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century was disputes on women’s priesthood. As a result of these debates, the Anglican Church began to ordain women as deacons, then as priests, and finally as bishops. In Orthodox view, it was the radical change of the doctrine and the deviation from the apostolic tradition, though at the beginning of the 20th century the Anglican Church was considered as one of the closest churches to Orthodoxy. The first critical step in the direction of women’s priesthood was the opening the diaconate to women. Both in Russian and Western theological science little attention has been devoted to the analysis of this first step, since historically the hottest theological discussion was on the issue of women’s priesthood and women’s episcopate. However, the decision on women’s diaconate was very important since it actually opened the way for all subsequent decisions on women’s priesthood in the Anglican Church. This article offers an analysis of the historical processes and theological discussions that brought the Church of England to the appearance of deaconesses and then women deacons. The article considers the revival of sisterhoods and monastic communities in the Church of England in the middle of the 19th century, the initiative to revive the rank of deaconesses in 1862 and subsequent official decision of the 1920 Lambeth Conference, as well as the relevant reports of the Commissions of 1897, 1908, 1919 and 1935. Then we analyze the discussions about the functions of the deaconess, as well as additional factors that influenced the decision to allow women to be ordained as deacons. One of these factors was the general crisis of the diaconal ministry and the desire to strengthen the role of the laity in the life of the Anglican Church. As a result, the 1968 Lambeth Conference opened diaconate to all laymen remaining in secular occupations (both men and women). The Church of England turned out to be one of the most conservative churches in the Anglican Communion – it introduced women's diaconate almost 20 years later, in 1987. Conservative groups were concerned that this decision would put the Church of England on a "slippery slope" towards women's priesthood and women's episcopate. Subsequent history proved that these fears were completely justified.

Résumé :
This thesis examines hindrances for women’s representation in Georgian politics at national level. The purpose is to understand what causal mechanisms that impact female representation in the National Parliament of Georgia. More precisely, the main purpose is to examine the hindrances for women to participate in politics in order to facilitate a deeper understanding of the known phenomenon of under-representation of women in politics. The thesis seeks to understand the contemporary situation in Georgia. The thesis is carried out with the case-study design and material consists mainly of interviews with female members of Parliament, representatives from political parties, and gender-issue experts from NGOs. The analysis of this thesis is also based on the results of previous research. The questions asked in the study are: What are hindering factors for women’s political participation in contemporary Georgia? and What are women’s organisations’, political parties’ and policy entrepreneurs’ role in increasing women’s political participation in Georgia? The overarching theoretical framework used in the thesis consists of structures, institutions and actors as well as feminist theory. The thesis argues that major obstacles for women to participate in politics are public opinion, the electoral system and the nomination process in political parties in Georgia. Further, influential individuals, so called policy entrepreneurs are seen as having an important role for the increase of women’s political participation and gender-equality issues in general. The most likely action to be seen is continued training and education for society as a whole, mainly targeting women. Affirmative actions such as party quotas seem far away.

Résumé :

For decades, there has been a concern with the negative framing of black women in the media. Historically, black women are placed into four stereotypical frames: The Mammy, The Jezebel, The Sapphire and The Matriarch. However, in 2008, a new image of black women arose through Michelle Obama. She was well rounded — beautiful, intelligent, insightful, humorous, strong, yet soft all at the same time. This study seeks to understand the changes in the framing of black women since Michelle Obama’s time as First Lady.

More specifically, this study focuses on the medium of magazine journalism, which seems to be largely ignored in the realm of media studies. Thirty articles from a mainstream (Glamour) and a black women’s magazine (Essence) were analyzed for the presence of historical frames along with the emergence of new ones. The study employs the qualitative method of textual analysis as a way to determine frames and their meanings through a grounded theory approach.

The primary outcomes of this study are a greater understanding of how historical frames still affect how magazines, mainstream and black, frame black women, and the revealing of new frames that depart from those historical representations. Furthermore, this study will be used as a foundation for editors, writers, educators and students alike, to create more authentic and multifaceted stories about black women.

Résumé :

Demonstrations in response to the harsh austerity budget in Greece which cut valuable government services, and the civil unrest in Athens specifically, are an outward, visible response to economic crisis. In an androcentric society such as Greece, women are disproportionately affected by the austerity measures because of the feminization of budget cuts. This ethnographic study explores how middle class women in Athens are coping economically, politically and socially in a national and global financial crisis. Through studying middle class Greek women, one can intensively illustrate the faults of neoliberal economic policies that pride themselves on the creation of the so-called middle class while simultaneously eliminating it. This research examines the survival strategies and adaptation methods of middle class women in Athens as well as placing them within the global economic context further displaying the fallacy of neoliberal economic policies as an economic growth agenda.

Résumé :
AbstractThe Middle East has undergone profound social, political, and economic changes over time, leading to reconfiguration of the positions and status of Arab men and women in relation to the state and the economy. The COVID-19 pandemic, the Arab Spring, and the 2008 financial crisis have all had significant impacts, particularly on Arab women, who have become the focus of policies aimed at “empowering” them. Before exploring the relationship between women’s empowerment and public policy, it is crucial to understand the concept of empowerment within its context, through the perspectives and narratives of women themselves. This chapter examines the concept of women’s empowerment in the context of Arab Gulf states, with a specific focus on Qatar, by exploring the meaning and perceptions of working and non-working women and the role of religious beliefs, moral values, and family. A holistic and dialectical approach is used to understand the complex and multidimensional nature of women’s empowerment and to highlight the intersectionality between gender, religion, and identity in the region. A deductive and inductive logic is adopted, drawing on both theoretical literature and practical interviews to offer a conceptual and empirical contribution to the field of women’s empowerment.

Résumé :
AbstractIntegrating women into the workforce is considered as part of the economic progress formula and modernization process leading to women’s empowerment. While this process has been internally driven in Western societies, it is globally imposed through policy diffusion, raising challenges for policy-makers to adapt the prevailing models to local cultures. Given the dearth of empirical studies in the context of Arab Gulf countries, this chapter offers compelling insights and qualitative evidence of women’s employment in Qatar. It focuses on the public sector as it represents the main employer of women providing many benefits and opportunities while presenting some constraints and challenges. Using an integrative multi-level lens and a culturally sensitive approach results from 50 in-depth semi-structured interviews with civil servants are analyzed to identify factors affecting women’s economic empowerment. The findings highlight the complexity of determining specific factors and provide policy recommendations based on women’s opinions and conveyed voices.

AbstractThis chapter examines the status of women’s participation in the socio-political development of Iranian society during the rule of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The data were obtained and collected from statistical sources, including the Ministries, Governmental Organizations, and the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran. The chapter reports that the presence and participation of women at the micro- and middle level of decision-making and management have increased. However, the participation of women in high organizational levels has faced social, political, and cultural barriers. So the policy in the field of the woman requires more and more efficient employment of women’s participation in macro-level management.

Résumé :
Our research work on women's entrepreneurship in Algeria has allowed us to identify the social reality of women's entrepreneurship in Algeria, and thus to identify the difficulties and obstacles it faces. To understand the reasons for these obstacles, it became clear to us through these results the necessity of testing the hypothesis “that the difficulties faced by the enterprises are due to the environment in which they are located” and that is through their assessment of this environmental environment. To carry out this research, we relied on the methodology applied by the International Labor Organization. The evaluation framework for the environment of women's entrepreneurship revolves around six variables as follows, first, the existence of a legal and regulatory system sensitive to the gender dimension that contributes to the economic empowerment of women; Secondly ،the position of women entrepreneurship in the national politics, thirdly, the existence of programs for gendersensitive financial interests, fourthly, benefiting from interests to support the development of gendersensitive institutions, fifth, access to markets and access to technology, sixth, representation of women entrepreneurs and their participation in political dialogue. To achieve this research of assessing the environmental environment of women's business in Algeria, we interviewed 42 women entrepreneurs using the focal-loop technique from the states: Algiers, Bejaia, Annaba, Oran and El Bayadh. An assessment of the legal and political ecosystem for women's business in Algeria allowed us to conclude that laws and labor legislation do not constitute a major obstacle for women entrepreneurs who are active in the formal sector, but the practice and reality of the field negatively affect women's micro-enterprises. On the institutional level, the Ministry of Solidarity, Family and Women's Issues has a directorate charged with promoting women. Among its tasks is the development of women's entrepreneurship. The political interest in the development of women's entrepreneurship, the interest of employers in promoting the spirit of entrepreneurship among women, and the contribution of women's entrepreneurship associations to the promotion of quality entrepreneurship, translates into a consensus of various actors in the political, economic and social sphere on the strategic importance of developing women's entrepreneurship. However, access to information remains the weak point for women entrepreneurs

Women have a pivotal role to play in the development and renaissance of old and modern societies, proving their potential for positive change in those societies. in various aspects of life, where it has become an important element in the process of change in society The Almighty in his book and Sunna Nabih Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), The Holy Quran set the right balance for women's dignity and gave them their full and undiminished rights to safeguard and safeguard their rights contrary to the ancient ignorant people. s rights have undergone a paradigm shift under the Prophet Muhammad, Islam emphasized the protection, empowerment, progress and justice of women's rights. Equity of treatment, right to property, education, inheritance, right to work... etc. Thus, the Islamic sharia was the precursor to the recognition of these rights before they were enshrined in international conventions, national legislation and comparison. As far as Algerian legislation is concerned, as a priority, most of the Government's programs have been established since independence. s rights ", and has been steadily strengthened in recent years as this has been reflected on the ground by the enactment of a number of legal texts in the same context so that they can be strengthened for their application, translated through, for example: Family Code, Act establishing maintenance fund, Labour Code, Health Code, Penal Code, Prison Organization Act... It has also empowered women in political participation to be an essential component of political life in accordance with the quota system through the promotion of women's political representation and public life, all within the framework of the Algerian State's ratification of international conventions in this regard

Résumé :
There is no doubt that the world today is more interested than ever in the discourse of human rights that sheds light on the covenants and legal charters that govern this domain. Besides that, women are the pivotal pillar of the society; consequently, they are the primary concern in the human rights discourse of different generations. Subsequently, their personal, cultural, political, financial and social rights are recognized; furthermore, their rights are strengthened by official charters . Despite the fact that no one can deny the positive aspects of the human rights discourse related to the role and the status of women in society by spreading human rights awareness and building a strong relationship between men and women based on human considerations; nevertheless, real life is another world, it is paradoxical, declarations and covenants advocate for women’s rights, at the same time women suffer from violence, disrespect, and discrimination. In the era of rights, cultural openness, technological revolution and economic development, women are threatened more than ever by other ways of violence that directly target the natural instinct and the moral values by spreading abnormalities such as homosexuality and gender reassignment. These acts can also be seen in official discourses and adopted by official organizations and governments profiting from the lack of the moral discourse that should be undertaken by the monotheistic religions especially the Islam. Moreover, the human rights discourse accuses the religious discourse of violating women’s rights and raises a number of suspicions around it. This leads us to question the credibility and the effectiveness of the human rights discourse? And to look for the alternatives that the Islamic discourse can offer in order to remove all the suspicions raised around it. These are questions that I try to answer through this article by elucidating the essence of the Islamic discourse that works for spreading values and also to reply on the suspicions that have been raised about the status of women in the Islam. I decided to follow these steps: Introduction: defining the problem and determining the outlines. First: Instinct is a guide to family values and drawing up the relationship between men and women. Second: Polygamy. Third: Guardianship and Alimony responsibility for the family. Fourth: Guardianship in the Islamic marriage contract. Fifth: Females decrease in religion and mind. Sixth: The male has the equal of the portion of two females. Conclusion.

Résumé :
The long struggle of women to enter politics, despite their long march to obtain these rights, has resulted in the culture of various human societies throughout different eras, where the problem of objecting to their participation in the conduct of public affairs, especially politically, has been overcome, and this is what the provisions of international law currently embody by removing the various barriers that hindered their effective contribution to the service of humanity, by granting them the right to make decisions in various fields and at all levels in the various organs of the State, and at the head of These rights include the right of women to participate in political decision-making, and their right to hold senior positions and assume all public positions in the State. Women's equal participation in political life plays a very important role in the process of the advancement of women in general, as it is not only a requirement of justice and simple democracy, but can also be considered a necessary condition for taking into account the interests of women

Despite the sacrifices and contributions made by Libyan women since the 2011 uprising ،through which they aspired to play a pivotal role in the decision-making process and contribute to achieving national reconciliation and sustainable peace ،what we are witnessing today is the exclusion and exclusion of all decision-making processes and peace negotiations ،and perhaps most of the policies Which are implemented by government institutions, help in shaping perceptions related to the roles that men and women play in Libyan society. Therefore, this study seeks to analyze the reality of Libyan women since 2011 and shed light on their participation in the decision-making process and peace negotiations. In addition to a proposal for Resolution (1325) and what it stipulates about the necessity of women’s participation in decision-making and peace negotiations, which the Libyan woman must take advantage of this resolution and develop a national plan for this resolution to confirm that she is a partner in decision-making and peace negotiations

Algerian women have now achieved a share of progress and development at all levels of socio-economic, political and educational, so as to change their social reality and improve their rank and become involved in the process of social development. From this point of view, the role of the media is to highlight this reality of women's living in Algerian society, especially television, which is one of the media that offers many programs. Among them is the drama of TV series, which is one of the most watched and perhaps influential programs so that it is one of the cultural images and messages capable of making a lot of changes in any realistic society. The characters and their repetition make the drama of television series capable of forming and building intellectual images of individuals, especially Algerian women

Résumé :
The preparation of women is based on providing them with education skills and skills that enable them to accomplish their tasks in a better way and reflect positively on all areas of life and promote the efforts of women in the homeland. Education is one of the most important and prominent rights that must be granted to man regardless of his gender. The importance of women is no less important than the education of men, as both are complementary Society’s tools for progress. Science enhances awareness and develops the ability to establish a correct family upbringing based on sound societal principles that call for love and peace. Therefore, this involves bringing out a conscious generation free from complexes based on division and violence. This is what societies should secure in terms of providing opportunities for women ،supporting them, and providing Ways and tools of education, as education increases women’s awareness of their rights, introduces them to their duties, and guarantees them a healthy and sound life. Islam has made education a duty obligatory for every Muslim man and woman, and here the role of education emerges as an essential aspect of empowering women in acquiring this legitimate right, which is a guarantor that gives them a greater ability to a decent life is one of the basic rights stipulated in many international agreements.

Women are half of society and partners with men in the purpose for which they were created, which is the worship of God and the building of the earth, In order to achieve development for the continuation of life, and the Sunnah of the Prophet is a witness to the luminous models of many female companions, they had an honorable role in building the Islamic civilization whose light shone and illuminated the world, The direction of Islam in general and the Sunnah in particular was to encourage women to take care of their homes and families, but they did not hesitate to encourage them to build society and enter the economic field. Evidence from the Sunnah proved that women's participation was inclusive of all economic activities of all kinds, whether that was related to commodity and service production or was an economic exchange, That is, everything related to trade, and she dealt with her keenness to adhere to the Islamic morals defined by the Sharia. And by following the texts of the Sunnah, we stand with evidence of the facts through which it proved economic rationality that made it creative in all areas of life, inside and outside the home. Résumé :
This study, titled “Women and Emerging Jurisprudential Problems,” starts with a fundamentalist, purposeful reading, based on the postulates of the importance of women, their role in life, their participation in society and their interaction with its issues. The tangible, tangible, and the moral, by working to preserve its cohesion, spread religious awareness, and spread human values and principles that are fully compatible with what came with the Islamic Sharia. It is guaranteed over time. On the other hand, clarifying the interaction of women in public issues and their contributions to the intellectual arena, enriching them, and liberating sayings and opinions while preoccupying themselves with the sciences of narration and know-how. One of the most important reasons that prompted me to write in this study is the growing doctrinal problems related to women directly and to the family, of which women are the cornerstone. Likewise, the Islamic library must be provided with studies that reveal the treasures of Sharia and the jurisprudential capacity capable of controlling reality and applying rulings on reality. The idea on which the study is based is an attempt to answer questions that represent a problem for researchers, and may even disturb orientalists, such as the main question: What is the correct legal view of women? And it branches off from it: What are the purposes of rulings that the West (and perhaps some Muslims) see as unfair and oppressive to women? What is the extent of women's interaction in the jurisprudential and intellectual arena since the inception of Islam until today? And how to deal with issues and balance in general and women in particular? Approach to study the subject: an inductive approach that follows the particles and attaches them to the general faculties of Sharia, then the analytical approach based on analyzing the information reached. The study plan has two axes: The first axis (the correct concept of the Islamic view of women) It contains two topics: 1- Islam honoring women as a vision of objectives. 2- Models for active women in their society. The second axis: (emerging problems related to women) There are two topics: 1- The role of women in spreading societal awareness keeping pace with the times. 2- Models of developments in the impact of technology. Résumé :
Objectives. To evaluate the effectiveness, use, and implementation of telehealth for women’s preventive services for reproductive healthcare and interpersonal violence (IPV), and to evaluate patient preferences and engagement for telehealth, particularly in the context of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Data sources. Ovid MEDLINE®, CINAHL®, Embase®, and Cochrane CENTRAL databases (July 1, 2016, to March 4, 2022); manual review of reference lists; suggestions from stakeholders; and responses to a Federal Register Notice. Review methods. Eligible abstracts and full-text articles of telehealth interventions were independently dual reviewed for inclusion using predefined criteria. Dual review was used for data abstraction, study-level risk of bias assessment, and strength of evidence (SOE) rating using established methods. Meta-analysis was not conducted due to heterogeneity of studies and limited available data. Results. Searches identified 5,704 unique records. Eight randomized controlled trials, one nonrandomized trial, and seven observational studies, involving 10,731 participants, met inclusion criteria. Of these, nine evaluated IPV services and seven evaluated contraceptive care, the only reproductive health service studied. Risk of bias was low in one study, moderate in nine trials and five observational studies, and high in one study. Telehealth interventions were intended to replace usual care in 14 studies and supplement care in 2 studies. Delivery modes included telephone (5 studies), online modules (5 studies), and mobile applications (1 study), and was unclear or undefined in five studies. There were no differences between telehealth interventions to supplement contraceptive care and comparators for rates of contraceptive use, sexually transmitted infection, and pregnancy (low SOE); evidence was insufficient for abortion rates. There were no differences between telehealth IPV services versus comparators for outcomes measuring repeat IPV, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, fear of partner, coercive control, self-efficacy, and safety behaviors (low SOE). The COVID-19 pandemic increased telehealth utilization. Barriers to telehealth interventions included limited internet access and digital literacy among English-speaking IPV survivors, and technical challenges and confidentiality concerns for contraceptive care. Telehealth use was facilitated by strategies to ensure safety of individuals who receive IPV services. Evidence was insufficient to evaluate access, health equity, or harms outcomes. Conclusions. Limited evidence suggests that telehealth interventions for contraceptive care and IPV services result in equivalent clinical and patient-reported outcomes as in-person care. Uncertainty remains regarding the most effective approaches for delivering these services, and how to best mobilize telehealth, particularly for women facing barriers to healthcare.

Résumé :
This overview to the edited volume is structured to briefly explore the following key points that emerge in the case analysis of how women’s collective action has created changes for both women’s well-being and the implementation of the Village Law, as well as how such change has been supported by a wide range of CSOs across different contexts and sectors. First, we identify variation in the diversity of priorities and initiatives that villages have introduced as a result of women’s influence on the implementation of the Law. Such initiatives go beyond infrastructure and economic development projects (although women have also prioritised these kinds of initiatives) and traverse multiple sectoral issues in seeking to address challenges for villagers, particularly women, through village development. Second, we identify the different types of changes that are evident in the case studies that have implications for women’s everyday wellbeing, as well as their influence on structures of power, decision making and village development at the individual and institutional levels, and in broader contexts. Third, we discuss how changes have come about for rural village women and what factors have contributed to the changes that are illustrated through the case studies. This includes a discussion of how context dynamics constrain or enable women’s influence, variation in core challenges (or sectoral issues) for women, and how collective action has contributed to forging these changes as is illustrated by the case studies. Fourth, we explore the temporal dimensions of change. And finally, we explore some of the pathways by which such changes have occurred in the research areas, that being different contexts.

Huntington, Dale. Meeting women's health care needs after abortion. Population Council, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh2000.1036.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Women who seek emergency treatment for abortion complications—bleeding, infection, and injuries to the reproductive tract system—should be a priority group for reproductive health care programs. These women often receive poor-quality services that do not address their multiple health needs. They may be discharged without counseling on postoperative recuperation, family planning (FP), or other reproductive health (RH) issues. Women who have had an induced abortion due to an unwanted pregnancy are likely to have a repeat abortion unless they receive appropriate FP counseling and services. Preventing repeat unsafe abortions is important for RH programs because it saves women's lives, protects women’s health, and reduces the need for costly emergency services for abortion complications. At the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, the world's governments called for improvements in postabortion medical services. As part of the resulting international postabortion care initiative, the Population Council’s Operations Research and Technical Assistance projects worked collaboratively to conduct research on interventions to improve postabortion care. This brief summarizes the major findings of this research and relevant studies by other international organizations.

Résumé :
This Working Paper analyses the role and practices of women’s groups in relation to women’s protection in the provinces of North and South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Contrasting qualitative materials from communities in Congo with the literature on women’s agency, we explore the spaces, strategies, and repertoires used by women to increase their participation in community protection structures. Using case studies from North and South Kivu, including protection projects supported by ActionAid and Oxfam, we show how women’s leadership groups can constitute an empowering space and vehicle for women’s collective negotiation for protection which spans across several interrelated spheres: domestic, community, and professional, as well as legal, religious, and customary. Through our analysis of how women’s groups shape protection discourses and progressively change practices, we aim to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of what a women-led approach to protection means in practice as well as the challenges and opportunities that women face in order to expand their agency in a conflict-affected and patriarchal context.

Résumé :
The results of empirical studies focusing on gender differences in subjective wellbeing based on either national or comparative international data are inconclusive. In Turkey, where levels of gender inequality are high, women tend to report higher levels of life satisfaction than men. This study investigates the relationship between factors related to women’s empowerment and life satisfaction for both ever-married and never-married women using the 2018 Turkey Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS), which collected data on life satisfaction for the first time in a TDHS series. The results show that in addition to their material resources and living environment, factors related to women’s agency – i.e., education and participation in decisionmaking – are associated with women’s levels of life satisfaction.

Résumé :
The Women, Peace and Security or Gender Peace and Security (WPS/GPS) agenda has expanded significantly over the 20+ years of concerted efforts at many levels to expand the role of women in conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Yet many authors note that the expansion of international agreements and national plans to support greater women’s participation in decision-making have yet to translate into concrete changes. This report examines progress in promoting women’s meaningful participation in decision making processes in conflict prevention and peacebuilding, with a focus on changes since 2018. Evidence on women’s meaningful participation in decision-making tends to focus on a small range of measurable outcomes with some studies considering the outcomes of women’s involvement in those processes to determine the extent to which they might be ‘meaningful’. Few studies examine differential outcomes of such initiatives for different groups of women, and most data does not allow for the disaggregation of intersecting identities between gender, ethnicity, race, disability, migration status and other key factors. Evidence collected for this report suggests that policies and programmes seeking to support greater women’s participation in decision-making in conflict prevention and peacebuilding often struggle to address the broader structural factors that inhibit women’s empowerment. Tackling longstanding and often deeply embedded harmful social norms has proven challenging across sectors, and in conflict or post-conflict settings with highly complex social dynamics, this can be especially difficult. Many of the issues highlighted in the literature as hindering progress on the WPS agenda relate to cross-cutting issues at the heart of gender inequality. Multiple authors from within women’s movements in conflict and post-conflict settings emphasise the need for policies and programmes that support women to act as agents of change in their own communities and which amplify their voices rather than speak on their behalf. Recent achievements in South Sudan and the Pacific region are indicative of the potential of women’s movements to affect change in conflict prevention and peacebuilding and suggest progress is being made in some areas, though gender equality in these processes may be a long way off.
