Résumé :

Little Women and Good Wives is a classic children’s novel published in the late nineteenth century by American writer Louise May Alcott. The book concerns the lives, loves and marriages of four sisters growing up during the American Civil War. Alcott portrays four sisters in the book. They are Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. In this essay, Jo’s characteristics will be compared and contrasted with those of her three sisters. The purpose of this comparison is to demonstrate how Jo shows her non-femininity and to what extent she diverges from the contemporary expectations of women. Furthermore, based on the close reading of the novel and historical research, this essay will discuss whether Jo’s choice of writing, her main meanings of entering the man’s world is realistic.

This thesis explores both limits and possibilities. It reflects on processes of appropriation, re-signification and critique as practiced variably by African American Muslim women. I situate these processes within the concept of multiple critique, for specifically three moments-Sherman Jackson's Third Resurrection, the black feminist tradition, and Islamic feminisms.

McGee, Paula L. « The Wal-Martization of African American Religion : T.D. Jakes and Woman Thou Art Loosed ». Scholarship @ Claremont, 2012. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cgu_etd/70.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This dissertation is an ideological critique of the New Black Church model of ministry, with T.D. Jakes and Woman Thou Art Loosed (WTAL) as a case study. T.D. Jakes is an African American televangelist who pastors The Potter’s House, a supermegachurch in Dallas, Texas. He is the quintessential example of a New Black Church pastor—a religious entrepreneur with several successful faith brands. WTAL is by far his most successful brand. Unashamed of his capitalist success, with an empire estimated to be worth $100 million dollars, Jakes says that it is occupational discrimination for him not to reap the benefits of the American dream. This dissertation identifies what has happened to the brand and Jakes’s ministry as “the Wal-Martization of African American Religion.” As a theoretical concept, Wal-Martization speaks to both the ideology and process that explains the generational differences between the New Black Church and the Black Church. It also is indicative of the branding and storytelling at every level of representation of the New Black Church. Jakes and New Black Church pastors are successful because they blur the lines between sacred and secular when they combine their vocations of pastor and entrepreneur. In this dissertation, I propose a cultural studies approach and a two-fold theological method for scholars to study these popular preachers. The method combines James McClendon’s Biography as Theology and Paul Tillich’s definitions of theology and theological norm from Systematic Theology. The method is a collaborative effort between the academic theologian and preacher. The scholar uses Biography as Theology to study the preacher (Jakes), and the second part of the method, Brand as Theology and Theological Norm, is where the scholar uses qualitative research methods to study the brand (WTAL). I define theologies of prosperity as contextual theologies of empire on a continuum that affirm it is God’s will and a believer’s right to obtain health and wealth by using Scripture and rituals like seed-faith giving and positive confession. Because these popular preachers offer adherents existential explanations for suffering (health and wealth), and prescriptions for liberation, I describe theologies of prosperity as theodicy and contemporary liberation theology. However, unlike traditional liberation theologies, these theologies do not have a preferential option for the poor. Instead, Jakes and other New Black Church pastors only offer adherents a pseudo-liberation. In essence, the stories of liberation that Bishop Jakes tells in his brands do not actually empower women, ideologically these stories only encourage women to stay loyal to his brand, become covenant ministry partners, and to buy more products. Jakes and New Black Church pastors are from the Second Gilded Age, they encourage women to pursue individual success within an oppressive system. Similar to Russell Conwell and other celebrity clerics from the First Gilded Age, Jakes and these pastors inadvertently blame the victims for their poverty and for not reaping the benefits of the American Dream, which according to prosperity preachers is available to all.

James, Manon Ceridwen. « Women, identity and religion in Wales : a conversation in practical theology ». Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2015. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6195/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study within Practical Theology explores the nature of the relationship between women’s identity and religion in Wales, using qualitative and literary methods and in particular poetry as a form of theological reflection. The thesis is structured as a theological ‘critical conversation’. Dialogue partners include Western feminist theologians and their claim that women find it difficult to assert an authentic self and also sociological and historical texts looking at religion, women and identity in Wales. Christianity has played a significant part in Welsh identity construction, particularly in creating a repressive self-image for Welsh women for political reasons. Women’s current perspectives were investigated through life-story interviews, memoirs and the poetry of Menna Elfyn. My own poetry also makes a significant contribution to the reflexive insights within this project, and is an innovative aspect of my methodology. Unlike the representation of women as silent and disempowered within Western feminist theology, Welsh women are resilient and have an empowering and operative stereotype, the Welsh Mam – Strong Woman. Welsh women are at a key stage of constructing a new identity, disconnected from religion and other restrictive influences of the past. I end with a call for the churches in Wales to attend to issues of stratification, stigmatisation, repression and power in order to facilitate the flourishing of women as well as be more effective in their mission.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis engages with the feminist argument that women need to create a culture of the female and rediscover female genealogy. The misogynistic, theological and philosophical narratives on Woman are deconstructed. Using the metaphor of divining as a tool for searching for a source the author seeks to discover the source of Woman, one not bound by male definition and control. In removing the stigma of Woman as 'misbegotten male' and cause of 'original sin' Woman's sexuality and spirituality are recognised. Female sex is acknowledged and the difference reframed so that male sex no longer holds the dominant position. Woman becomes Divine, and it is a divinity that signifies her earthly interactions in her spiritual, social and personal life. After the divining a female genealogy is created and the divine is drawn out in woman. The writing and analyses of Virginia Woolf and Luce Irigaray are drawn on to establish the basis of the research methodology. Creativity, myths, story, poetry, fiction and feminist analysis are used to find the woman hidden in traditional patriarchal rendering of history. This thesis is both a historical and autobiographical research taken within the context of the author's cultural influences. It is a transdisciplinary research within a set framework, concentrating on women's sexual and spiritual specificity. Greek and Celtic history, Wicca, Christianity and Buddhism are included, with an inclusive but not in-depth analysis of these traditions. The underlying theme of this thesis is women's disconnection from each other. In the author's personal story it concerns her mother, sister and herself. In the collective story it is about women's loss of their female genealogy and connection to their women's history.

Résumé :
Bibliography: pages 151-157.
The intention of this thesis is to offer a perspective on the current debate over women's place in Western religious institutions, i.e. the Judaeo-Christian tradition; and to provide a way of thinking about those issues which will lead to a positive, progressive and realistic vision of co-humanity, and a method of achieving it. The thorny battleground of the "women's debate", as it is inaccurately named, was not my original choice of thesis topic. A lifelong commitment to feminist principles has been matched with an equally lengthy wariness regarding society's attitude towards such matters. Also, the understandable obsession of South African religious studies departments, and journals, with the issue of racism has had the inevitable result of trivializing the related issue of sexism as secondary. The narrowness of such thinking has led to strange distortions, including the belief that evil can somehow be 'ranked' and that there can be a 'hierarchy' of oppression. My intentions changed during a search of religious publications and journals while completing a post-graduate assignment. It was abundantly apparent that the scale of the debate on women's place in religion was fast outstripping most other debates. However, it was not an area which had been treated locally with seriousness. It had unfolded into a comprehensive and highly contentious debate in North American and British campuses and religious institutions, and the proliferation of books and articles on the subject by not only theologians but also sociologists, anthropologists and linguists had greatly extended the platform and the level on which the debate was to be fought. It appeared that women working in many fields were laying claim to religion, and were engaging issues which had previously been left to the handful of articulate women working at least nominally within orthodox structures.

The objective of this study is the analysis, by the socio-literary boarding approach, of the characterization that the Hebrew Bible mentions about three women, or women groups, characters of its narratives. Look foreword to figure out her sexual behavior and her morality in contrast with the requirements made on the woman in other parts of this same Bible, considering the woman importance for the traditions of the Israel\'s formation. It will be also looked foreword to find out some contrasts even superficially, between the judgment that makes the Biblical narrator as the apparent unorthodox behavior of these women and the rabbinical judaism arguments and the first thinkers of the Christianity and their interpretation such as, this kind of feminine behavior. Will they be Lot\'s daughters and their incestuous relation, Tamar, Juda\'s daughter-in-law and her prostitution and Noemi and Rute\'s saga in the episode of the seduction of Boaz. The Hebrew Bible is the main source of inspiration for the three most influential and growing religions in the world since second-century A. D. Part of the east and all through the west have found its socio-cultural basis in them, which are: the Judaism, the Christianity and the Islamism. Considering the feminine social behavior importance for such religions, it will be important to figure out what the Hebrew Bible has to say on which must be the values that bases it. The social attitudes are deeply influenced by the manner in how to conceive the divinity. Therefore, it becomes extremely relevant to the West christianity, to figure out, how especially the judaism and the Christianism 8 interpreted the Biblical texts with regard to the current women into the Biblical narratives, in order to eliminate the differences and injustices motivated by religious mistaken Interpretations. Taking in consideration the notable \"androcentrism\" of the authors, reviewers and Bible editors, witch according to some critics was one of the signs of their devotion, determining the way they wrote their texts, and considering still the misogyny that predominated the Biblical texts interpretation art up to now, it\'s important to find out if the West Christian devotion is not totally supported on a concealed prejudicial basis of religious concepts attributed to the divine revelation, thanks to the interested interpretations even though to the Biblical authors intentions regarding woman.

Hartwell, Jeanette May. « Wisdom, strange or somewhere in between : in search of a real woman in the Book of Proverbs ». Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7593/.

Résumé :
The focus of this study is the portrayal of the Strange Woman and the unnamed mothers and wives of Proverbs arguing for a realistic portrayal of these women within the book. Informed by a feminist approach it considers the impact of male-oriented reading strategies upon existing interpretation and attends to the way in which poetic parallelism and variant repetition create proverbial clusters which offer an alternative context for the interpretation of proverbs. The findings show, firstly, that current interpretations of women in Proverbs are unduly influenced by the portrayal of Wisdom, the Strange Woman and the Woman of Worth in the framework of chapters 1-9 and 31, rather than by the text itself. Secondly, women’s voices provide a possible source for material in the lectures of Proverbs 1-9 (along with the father), the poems of Proverbs 31, and as the narrator of the encounter with the Strange Woman in Proverbs 7. Thirdly, where mothers and wives are in focus, alternative interpretations can be offered which do not assess the character or behaviour of the woman, but rather focus on the son’s character and behaviour and its subsequent impact upon relationships with his parents, his wife and his own offspring.

This report is based on a field study that was carried out in Faridabad, India in the spring of 2007. The aim is to study what role the Hindu goddesses play for Hindu women. To fulfil this purpose I am also studying the interviewed women’s underlying understanding regarding gender equality.

To fulfil the aim a qualitative method was chosen and 19 interviews were completed. The informants answered questions about being a woman in the Hindu society and their opinions on how to change women’s situation. While analysing the results I was inspired by previous research on gender and Hinduism.

In the Hindu mythology there are both gods and goddesses. Worshipping goddesses can be seen as a source of power and inspiration for women. Therefore I wanted to study if the informants look at the goddesses as role models. The results show that it is difficult to determine whether or not that is the case. Approximately half of the informants said that they looked at the goddesses as role models. In contrast to previous research the informants did not mention the goddesses that are represented with qualities that the ideal wife should posses, instead Durga, the fight goddess, was mentioned. However, previous research also shows that the independent goddesses that were described as role models by the informants are a part of a patriarchal structure. During the interviews the role of being a good wife and a mother is described as the most important thing for the informants. This can, according to me, be related to the most significant result on what the understanding of gender equality is based on. This is the opinion that men and women are born with different qualities. In contrast to the gender theory, the differences between men and women are not understood as primarily socially constructed.

Résumé :
Kotzo shel yod by Y. L. Gordon (1832–1892) – one of the prominent intellectuals of the Jewish Enlightenment period – is a well-known Hebrew poem. This poem is characterized by a daring, sharp criticism of the traditional Jewish institutions, which the author felt required a critical shake-up. Gordon’s literary works were inspired by the Jewish Ashkenazi world. This unique and pioneering literary work was translated into Judeo-Spanish (Ladino). The aim of this article is to present the Sephardic version of Gordon’s poem. The article will attempt to examine the motives behind the translation of this work into Ladino, the reception of the translated work by its readership and the challenges faced by the anonymous translator who sought to make this work accessibleto the Ladino-reading public, in the clear knowledge that this version was quite far removed from the Ashkenazi original from which it sprang.

This dissertation deals with the women at Base s Eclesial Communities (CEBs), in Goiânia and investigates if the women find at CEBs a favorable space to participation, autonomy and equality relationship. The CEBs, understood as a socialreligious phenomenon that emphasizes the democratic participation and the liberator commitment, appear in the same decade in which emerge the new feminist movements, that define themselves by freedom and equality ideals and criticize the inequality and subordination relationships between women and men. The investigation of the reasons that boost the women to look for CEBs, the gains obtained and the challenges found has fundamental importance to understand the meaning of this Brazilian social-religious phenomenon. The present paper allows the CEBs actresses tell their word about the reasons, the gains obtained and the transformations happened in the relationships from their participation in them, so the difficulties and challenges found. They show the process of becoming autonomy people and able to fight for their rights in equality and alterative relation with men. This process advances with challenges, because the patriarchalism still persists in the Church and society as a whole.

Antoinette Brown Blackwell (1825-1921) became one of the most outspoken and remarkable women of her era: an ordained minister, a published author, a prominent public speaker, and a philosophical thinker whose writings described and explicated her syntheses of theology and science. Her life was punctuated by “firsts” that have significance within women’s history as evidence of female success in what were then male-dominated arenas. In this dissertation I propose that the arguments that Brown Blackwell presented on behalf of women’s rights can be understood as a synthesis of Rev. Charles Grandison Finney’s religious teachings around doing with science-based theories that she believed revealed validating evidence about women’s nature and abilities to do. After the publication of her book, The Sexes Throughout Nature (1875), her contributions to women’s rights movements and her books were less documented by historians, perhaps because she was less focused on suffrage. I argue that during that time, her contributions to woman’s rights were nevertheless significant as she worked among women who resonated with her religious sensibilities, agendas, and rhetoric: while many actively supported woman’s suffrage, most did not. In advancing woman’s rights, Brown Blackwell used rhetoric that synthesized her Finney-inspired ideals with her interpretations of science. This dissertation will add to the existing scholarship about women’s rights, by recognizing the existence and thoughts of the thousands of religious women who contributed to woman’s rights, even if they all did not support suffrage, as an outward expression of their inward piety.

Byrne, Natalie Elizabeth. « Parental cognitions, stress and coping in parents of children with developmental disabilities ». Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2014. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4928/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The review examines the literature in relation to parental cognitions and their relationship to child behaviour in parents of children with intellectual disability. It is generally recognised that mental health difficulties are at least partly influenced and maintained by cognitive differences and style. A literature search was carried out to identify articles relevant to parental locus of control, self-efficacy and attributions of behaviours in people with intellectual disability. It is argued that there is a need to develop a multidimensional model of parental cognition to fully describe parental cognitions and their relations to child behaviour and parental mental health. Within the empirical paper, parental perceptions of their child’s genetic syndrome were explored using the Common Sense Model of Illness Representations (Leventhal et al., 1980). Associations between parental perceptions, coping behaviours, affect and mental health were explored. Participants completed the Illness Perceptions Questionnaire Revised for Genetic Syndromes, measures of positive and negative affect, anxiety and depression and coping behaviours. Findings provide preliminary support for the hypothesis that the Common Sense Model of Illness Representations can be applied to the caregivers of children with rare genetic syndromes. Findings suggest that illness representations may have important implications for coping strategies and caregiver wellbeing.

Ramji, Rubina. « The centrality of veiling and invisibility : The construction of the Muslim woman identity in contemporary discourses and media ». Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/29064.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis investigates the "Muslim woman" as an ideological construct and what it has come to mean in both Eastern and Western thought. It examines the discourses within the historical, social and political context of Islamism, Orientalism and Feminism. This thesis explores the foundations and influences of Islamic images constructed by the West. It analyzes contemporary feminist thought in order to offer a survey of Islamic feminist approaches to the Islamic woman. There is a consistent, truncated, stereotypical image of Islam in general, and Muslim women specifically, which are overwhelmingly evidenced in popular films in America. In order to contextualize these images, this thesis offers suggestive evidence that these stereotypes are not just in films, but are perpetuated within Islamist discourse, substantiated by Orientalism and repeated by Feminist discourse. Chapter One provides an overview of current relations between the West and the East to show how the image of Islam has come to be understood today. Although the role of Muslim women is generally ignored, it is important to understand how historical and current events have used religious rhetoric to demonize Islam as a religion, and Muslim men as terrorists and oppressors. Chapter Two investigates how the veil has become the "unifying" symbol: a signifier that distinguishes Islam from the outside. It is unique as a symbol because it constantly tells the West to stay out of Islamic issues. Chapter Three provides an overview of Colonialism as a framework for the historical inclusion of the image of Islamic women and of the veil in Western thought. I demonstrate, by examining contemporary theorists such as Edward Said and Homi Bhabha, how colonial discourse has created a socially constructed colonial subject of the Muslim male and female which is based on "difference." Chapter Four draws on current scholarship in the areas of religion, film and gender to demonstrate the importance of cinematic representations of the constructed Islamic woman and how they have been perpetuated within the discourses of Orientalism, Feminism and Islamism. By examining films and numerous movie guides, this chapter demonstrates the thorough research sampling done to illustrate how the Muslim woman is constantly depicted in American cinema as veiled, silent and invisible. The concluding chapter explores the voices of women writing from within the Islamic tradition who are interrogating the assumptions of the nationalist framework, and its compatibility with women's rights. It explores various eminent Islamic feminist scholars' approaches to the Muslim woman. Leila Ahmed, Fatima Mernissi, and Nawal El Saadawi all claim that the veil is a major element of stereotyping, and that it is among the most visible signs of Islam women's oppression.

In this study, a specific group of religiously active Muslim women is investigated about how they are treated in Swedish society and what they consider the role of women in Islam. Predictions that Islam would be a women-threatening religion is common in the media, but also among the majority of Sweden's population, according to respondents in this study. Therefore, the intention of the study has been to gain a better understanding of the Muslim women's lives in Sweden. The study has a qualitative approach based on a comparative hermeneutic interview study where five, active Muslim women to a varied extent have been interviewed. The result shows that all women have been subjected to violations in society and that they consider that the majority of Swedish society's individuals are prejudiced by Islam as religion assuming that Muslim women are oppressed, are abandoned against their will, have to wear veil and must obey their men - who are formed as aggressive and violent.

Py, Fatima.

This thesis studies the occurrences of supernatural in Guadeloupe’s feminine novel. The writers are all women from Guadeloupe: they were born there (Lacrosil, Conde) or their parents come from Guadeloupe and they grew up there (Schwarz-Bart, Pineau). Every novel evokes a literary period of the 20th century: demain jab-herma (1960-1970), Pluie et vent sur Telumée miracle (1970-1980), moi, tituba, sorciere… (1980-1990) and la Grande drive des esprits (1990-2000).Every novel is based on supernatural: demain, jab-herma's hero is a sorcerer, such as Schwarz-Bart and Conde’s heroes. La Grande drive des esprits describes a family through the 20th century in Guadeloupe and a few characters have supernatural powers. We first made an inventory of contemporary feminine novels: it rises at the 20th century, thanks to our writers and through this supernatural theme. Then, we studied supernatural, religious magical, sacred's role in Guadeloupe: where it comes from, its place in Caribbean, its popular role. Finally, we studied fantastic imaginary's place: how it allows unpowerful slaves and slaves' children to think themselves powerful, the novel shows the social role of magical religious. We wanted to show how supernatural partly defines Guadeloupe’s novel. In conclusion, this study reveals how supernatural makes part of the weltanshauung, the way the people from Guadeloupe can see the world; the characters' whole life is made of supernatural, from birth to death; supernatural shows women's fundamental role, and appears as well in speaking, customs and public life

The present work aims to comprehend, based on Santa Rita de Cássia s life and trajectory, how the modern women identity has been built and socially appropriated by the medieval religion. During Santa Rita de Cassia s life, her body and desires never belonged to her since she wished to be a nun but her parents obliged her to get married. Once married, she subjected to her husband because of her children. As a widow, she preferred to see her own children dead than see them seek revenge. She committed herself to a religious life demonstrating clearly that, tormented by flesh desire, needed to fight against the devil that presented himself as a desired man. The desire of her existence was denied by her parents, her husband, her family and in the Coventry, where her toughest struggle happened, her search to become a acceptable woman for God. This research is committed to understanding a phenomenon that happens in the countryside of Minas Gerais in a city called Cassia. In this city there are people devoted to the saint, mostly females, and all of them live a life that is a sequence of facts related to the history of Santa Rita de Cassia: a life of acceptance and subjection to the fatality of the Holy. Their main reason of existence is the belief and the miracles, elements that facilitate both the acceptance and the subjection of the life they have.

This thesis aims to show the strength of the Ukrainian women in the arts and traditions, in particular the city of Prudentópolis in the state of Paraná, extending discussions on the identity to interpret the meanings of a whole to the statement, resistance and identification of its population. Thus, we deal with two perspectives, one that seeks to historically demonstrate the headquarters and the development of art and culture of the city of Prudentópolis and region through socioeconomic situation in which they lived the Ukrainians that region, as well as the context in which it constituted its art and culture. This path is placed face to face with the historical precedents of both the Ukrainian population and the population that arrived as immigrants to Parana. The other perspective follows the anthropological approach to doing ethnography of Ukrainian arts themselves, for an understanding and interpretation of your senses and meanings, for an analysis of possible recreations and reinventions developed by Prudentópolis society and region dominated by Ukrainian immigration. Associated with this approach, it investigated the relationship between these arts and local identity. In the wide world of Ukrainian art Prudentópolis and region, we have chosen for our investigation three: Dancing, Embroidery and Icon. The decision to treat these arts was justified by self-interest and its breadth in social relations in the city, because they, in particular, constitute a unique phenomenon that enables viewers perceived or latent aspects of the culture of the city's population

This dissertation deals with the memory of women descendants of Ukrainian living in Prudentópolis, country side of Paraná, and peculiar aspect is the fact that its population consists majorly from Ukrainians . There, traditions and religious festivals keep alive the Ukrainian culture. This led me to know the different ways of appropriation of the specific symbolical tissues of this culture, through gender s clipping associated to specificities of generations responsible by production of own meanings systems this culture. For all this, I resorted to studies of memory through authors as: Brandão (1985), Pollak (1989), Nora (1993), Bosi (1994), Halbwachs (2004), among others that have addressed this problem associating memory to its literary dimension, historical, socio-cultural. The Ukrainians, an important group of immigrants who migrated to Paraná as free workers at the beginning of the 20th century, built important activities for the region's cultural life and to the local economy. They shared their lives with immigrant Pollack s, Italians and Germans, building a strengthened segment of cultural hybridization of own history of Brazil. The choice of ethnographic approach, which not only could describe the culture and traditions, but also the history and socio-economical transformations of Prudentópolis town, in the State of Paraná, aimed to interpret the senses and meanings of actions turned to the assertion, resistance and identification of its population. For that, I resorted to the systematic searching exercise with my observing participation of rites and customs paying so familiar to recover traditional customs, intending to recuperate traditional habits, seeking to produce, initially, an Ethnography that could express, with refinement of details, the ways of living of women and the Ukrainians. The methodology was based on qualitative research because of their importance for studies of complex interpretative phenomenal and by the possibility of immersion on the context and reality of the environment researched. By registration of Prudentópolis daily s life, such as analyzing the history of these women lives, by memorizing as methodological resource, establishing relations by their memories identities formulations. I looked for, by this essay, tried to understand the importance of Ukrainian Women on the preservation of theirs cultural traditions
As tradições e as festas religiosas ali presentes mantêm viva a cultura ucraniana.

This thesis aims at assessing violence to the detriment of women in the Old Testament, which served as a religious amalgam for her elimination in the social environment of male domination, but not before proceeding with an approach to Hebrew history, in addition to the contextualization of the ancient Hebrew codes : Covenant, Deuteronomy and Leviticus, with the intercalation and paradox of violence exercised against her in each of the Old Testament codices, which have been transfused into all societies, even the most modern, in the West. It contributed, therefore, the feminist historical oppression, by the patriarchal connotation biblical, religious and social for the enactment of laws that, notoriously, inhibited in the human genesis the devaluation by the feminine condition. Its recrudescence, in the social context, in Brazil needed to establish equality between the sexes, by the Federal Constitution of 1988 and specific punishment for gender violence, due to the publication of the Laws of Maria da Penha (Lei nº 11.340 / 2006), besides the Feminicide Law no. 13.104 / 2015), to reduce the existing androcentric intolerance in Brazilian society, still pending social re-signification, to reduce contempt, humiliation, monetization and domestic violence, so common in Brazilian homes.

Domestic violence is a worrying phenomenon. In a concrete or symbolic way, it pervades the daily lives of many women who have experienced domestic violence situations. Once socially constructed, man is placed in an unequal position of power, these actions are often trivialized and reinforced by a society that is marked by patriarchy. Gender inequalities reinforce violence against women. My practice shows that many of these women seek help in religion, more specifically with their religious leaders who, in addition to agreeing with the violence that woman has lived, reinforce it through their religious beliefs. The cases seen at Casas Abrigo Regional Grande ABC attest that many women do not break the violence cycle because they belong to some religious institution and hear from their leaders discourses that legitimize submission and violence against women. This research intends to identify and analyze the Christianity influence in the violent family relations of Catholic and Evangelical women hosted in Casas Abrigo Regional Grande ABC and the same religious groups' perpetrators of violence against women. We will try to understand the violence consequences in these women's life, as well as to identify religion's influence in the masculine exercise of aggression and in the subjection of women to aggression. To approach these women, we chose two Reference Centers for Women's Care: “Marcia Dangremon” and “Vem Maria” as a field of this research. In order to approach the perpetrators of violence against women, we chose Centro de Referência Especializado de Assistência Social – CREAS de São Bernardo do Campo.
Buergener, Elisabeth. « 'Becoming a true Muslim' : Syrian women's journey to devoutness ». Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2013. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4710/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study examines why some Muslim women in Syria are turning towards an Islamist faith practice and devoutness in the context of the Syrian da‘wa movement. Based on interviews and participant observation from 2006 – 2011 it demonstrates that the quest for the power to live authentic religious lives as devout Muslims lies at the heart of the phenomenon. It argues that the individual development as illustrated by the in-depth profiles of five women, is facilitated by the new access to religious education for women in mosques and private lessons through female preachers that was advocated by the male religious elite. In previous research the compliance of women with restrictive Islamist practices such as veiling has often been explained as empowering women through aiming at mobility and the participation in public space. This thesis argues that the extent to which the participants went in adapting their lives to the Islamist ideal cannot be sufficiently explained by this hypothesis. Rather, it points at their religious motivations to gain a meaningful, emotionally satisfying and correct religious practice in the hope of divine reward. In addition, this thesis analyses the ambiguity of the question of female empowerment as experienced by women in the social and political sense and as religious leaders on one hand and on the other the participants' own concept of empowerment as divine enablement to submission. Thus it contributes to a fuller understanding of devout Islamist women according to their values and self-perception, and offers insights into the unique Syrian context.

Hung, Yung-Ju. « The relationship between Christian daughters-in-law and their non-Christian mothers-in-law in Taiwan : a theological and pastoral challenge ». Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7695/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
What are the relational dynamics between Taiwanese Christian daughters-in-law (D-Ls) and their non-Christian mothers-in-law (M-Ls)? How does Christian faith influence their intergenerational relations? How best can a caregiver offer appropriate pastoral support and assist Christian women in dealing with their non-Christian M-Ls? These issues and problems have been largely ignored in the relative literature and have arisen from of my pastoral work and personal experience. As a female pastor and D-L, set out this study seeking to integrate professional and academic knowledge in order to answer these questions. This study focuses on women’s experiences, attempting to reveal those relationship issues, and determine any problems underscoring the daily interactions of D-L—M-L in Taiwanese society. In order to meet these aims, the thesis engages with feminist pastoral theology, social science methodology, psychological analysis, and cultural studies. The first part of this study explores literature relevant to the topic, and the living context of Taiwanese D-Ls, as well as feminist pastoral theology. It is concerned with how traditional Chinese and Western cultures define roles and construct intergenerational relationships. Social transition, tension between tradition and modernity, and the struggles and challenges in relation to these intergenerational relationships are examined. The traditional male-centred theological paradigms, in which gender is interpreted and which must be reinterpreted and reconstructed for developing feminist theology, is also discussed. The second part of this study describes its feminist research methodology. It sets out a framework for collecting data to aid in developing an understanding of Taiwanese Christian women’s experience. Focus group discussions were used to explore the collective voice of the D-Ls. The last part of this study involves the presentation of research findings, discussions, and suggestions for further thought and action. It illustrates key findings from analysis of the focus group discussions, and describes the daily interaction and cultural ideology they present, along with the roles husbands, fathers-in-law (F-L), children, and other family members play in the web of relationships. The findings reveal that D-Ls face the challenges of an androcentric and hierarchical family culture, a close-knit family web, and unequal power relations. Different religious practices impact upon the D-L-M-L relationship and this can be a source of tension or conflict. Christian teachings also convey potentially androcentric messages for women that can affect their self-image and cause other harmful consequences. However, many participating women indicated that Christian beliefs provide them with a spiritual strength which has transformed their lives, and led to relational restoration. The Bible, teachings and church groups provide religious resources that support them in the face of relational challenges. I end with self-reflection, noting the need for further theological construction, and propose an alternative model of Triune love, based upon feminist interpretation, as a foundation for family renewal and women’s emancipation. This theological model has implications for new forms of pastoral care which can promote gender equality and non-hierarchical, intergenerational relationships.

Résumé :
Depression is a global health concern and among the top two causes of disability and disease. African-Americans often seek help from the Black church, but Pentecostal churches may fail to provide effective support due to doctrinal beliefs. African-American women with depression struggle due to psychosocial implications of the diagnosis. This research study used social constructionism and the biopsychosocial model of health to explore the lived experiences of African- American women suffering from self-reported depression while attending Pentecostal churches in the Northeast United States. Fourteen women, ages 20 to 76, participated in this qualitative, phenomenological study. Data obtained from the semistructured, face-to-face interviewswas analyzed with Moustakas' modified Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method. Findings included the following main themes: the Pentecostal church was ineffective in dealing with depression, participants drew comfort from personal faith in God, participants emoted through their behavior, most felt they had to wear a mask, traditional supports were used to deal with depression, strength was expected of them, they were blamed by the church for their depression, traumatic experiences were related to depression, and psychological harm was suffered because of Pentecostal church membership. Social change implications included the personal liberation of research participants who shared their experiences. Other implications include the potential for clergy to adopt more supportive practices for their members based on these findings and for mental health professionals to develop treatment options that are more culturally attuned and sensitive.

The purpose of this paper is to gain insight into how Swedish non-Muslim women look at Muslim women, as well as the manner in which Swedish authors have depicted women and Islam. Through qualitative interviews and text analysis, my knowledge has grown.

The selection of Swedish academic writers included in this study wants to show that the violation of women is not about religion but about how the Quran has been misinterpreted, and how the world looks at the Muslim culture. Among the authors we find theories that the woman is a victim of society, misinterpretations and prejudices but also a victim because of lack of equality in Islam.

The knowledge of Islam is not much developed among the interviewees and they have a split view of the Muslim woman. Partly she is seen as a victim of the veil, subjugated and inferior. Partly it is pointed out that she is a part of Muslim religion in the same way as the man is. There is a view among the interviewees that women are violated because of religion. The Muslim man has a grim image and is seen as the head of the family.

Résumé :
Once upon a time there was an oasis kingdom called Kroraina. It was situated in what is today the Xinjiang-region in China. In 1901 approximately one thousand Kharosthi documents was discovered under the sand in the ruins of the ancient lost city of Niya, Kroraina. The documents and artefacts reveal the everyday life of inhabitants and religious syncretism, in about the 3rd and 4th centuries C.E. Niya was abandoned shortly after it peaked, and much of its history is still a mystery, likewise the story of its women. The aim of this thesis is to examine the status of women in Niya, both in local society and in religions. To achieve this, I use a theory of social constructionism and a method of content analysis with a gender perspective. In the study of Kharosthi documents and graves of female mummies I discovered a connection. The result shows that the former high status of women in religion and society was decreasing, and a lower status of woman was at the time for Buddhist establishing in Niya. The time of witches was gone. The time of monks was coming. But different kinds of male-dominant religions in this syncretistic landscape contributed to this decline for women. It doesn´t matter if she is a witch, a female slave or even a queen. Womens position in Niya was a mix; high and low at the same time, and sometimes almost invisible.

Benjamin Gastineau’s work was written between 1845 and 1880. Gastineau wrote some theatre pieces, long and short novels, historical and social essays, and newspaper articles. He was influenced by Enlightenment philosophy and connected with Socialist and Republican thinkers. Gastineau considers his writing as a way to join people, and to give him an education, on following the principals of bourgeois moralism. Only in this way, people – he says – will have the possibility one day to make French Revolution again, and establish favourable conditions for the whole society, where justice, freedom and happiness could be guaranteed for everybody. Our work permits, thus, on the one hand, to investigate on diffusion of knowledge though newspaper articles and works written for popular readers. On the other hand, it permits to consider the political engagement of this writer, since the coup by Napoleon the 3th, passing through the Commune of Paris, and until his defence of the Communards when he was exiled in Brussels. In addition, Gastineau express his position against the abuses and the corruption of Roman Church and shows how women are its main victims. The rule of woman in XIX society takes part of a larger speech concerning social critics and including hell, medieval faith and the degradation of habits. As men have obtained intellectual and material freedom against the obligations impositions caused by religion that men could keep on walk together towards future; a material future represented by railway journey that takes men all over the acquisition of new spaces, real as well as imaginary ones, and of a new reality to build on following principals of peace, justice and freedom

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The principle of equality in the workplace, enshrined in the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, applies to a wide category of workers. However, there are certain exceptions to the legislation. Ministers of religion are not protected by the Act where employment is limited to one sex. Historically "employment" as a Church of England priest was limited to one sex. Then in 1993, following the momentous General Synod vote, legislation was passed which allowed women to be ordained as priests. A significant change had taken place regarding the theology of the Church. This shift in theology also brought the legal position of priests, in relation to sex discrimination, into question. An initial question was, should such priests be protected by secular employment legislation? if so, what are the legal difficulties of inclusion under the Sex Discrimination Act, and what are the practical difficulties of accommodation under the Act? These questions form the foundation stones of this thesis. A four stage process was used to answer these questions. First, a philosophical analysis of the theory behind sex discrimination law was undertaken, focusing on the concepts of equality and difference. Secondly, the position of the Church of England in relation to sex discrimination law was assessed with special reference to the employment status of ministers of religion. Thirdly, drawing on the theoretical work of stages one and two, an empirical investigation into the treatment of Church of England priests was conducted. The fourth stage built upon the empirical findings and the theoretical framework. British and European Community sex discrimination law was critically analysed, as was the relevant ecclesiastical law, and recommendations for law reform were made.

Margaret Haughery (1813-1882), a widowed, illiterate Irish immigrant who became known as “the Bread Woman” of New Orleans and the “Angel of the Delta” had grossed over $40,000 by the time of her death. She owned and ran a dairy farm and nationally-known bakery, donated to orphanages, leased property, owned slaves, joined with business partners and brought lawsuits. Although Haughery accomplished much in her life, she is commonly remembered only for her benevolent work with orphans and the poor. In 1884, a statue of her, posed with orphans, was erected by the city’s elite, one of the earliest statues of a woman in the nation. This thesis argues that it was Haughery’s willingness to engage in the mundane business practices of the day, including slaveholding, that made her veneration as a benefactress possible. Using acts of sale, property records, wills, newspaper articles, advertisements, and representations of Haughery, this thesis explores the life behind the image of the “Bread Woman.”

Labontu-Astier, Diana.

As suggested in the works of Assia Djebar about the body of the woman excluding the cleavage of the flesh and soul and of the body and personality means a vision of a united body encompasses a broad duration and space. This body is constantly connected to the environment that influences it. This has broken its unity up. The thesis puts the emphasis on its continuity, resistance and even the survival of its identity, despite the factors or contexts that have harmed it. Before giving back to the female body its lost unity, we identified the key terms of body and personality through the humanities, while taking into account the specifics of these terms related to the Arab-Muslim identity, to the Berber characteristics and to the French influence. With this starting point, we do not fall into the conventional and strictly social categorizations of the Algerian woman. In order to highlight the fundamental unity of the feminine being, we started with its physical dimension. This is the first aspect that we view and that we can describe. But it goes beyond the appearances since, supported by the language and the imagination, it drives a reflexive dimension. The Djebarien female character transitions from the stage "have a body" to the stage of "being a body" with several dimensions: physical, psychological, intellectual, linguistic and imaginary (I). But that image of unity and harmony is faced with less favorable pictures that appeared because Islam moved away from its original doctrine as presented in the book “Far from Medina”, and the valuation of certain concepts such as honor, modesty and shame. Faced with the male authority that is exercised on the Algerian female body in every moment of life, and which results in confinement, humiliation, arrest to some very well-defined roles (such as mother and wife), orders, beatings, insults, etc.., the female body develops a “micro psychology” (M. Maffesoli) that is transmitted from generation to generation and provides built-in answers to various situations. All actions are impregnated with these, but that doesn't stop preventing the emergence of hidden traces of the female personality in very specific contexts. These traces highlight the cunning, the challenge and even the hatred of women to men, designated in the Algerian female imaginary by the term "e'dou" (enemy). These feelings reveal the strength of the female body made of a silent revolt expressed or debased by shouts, murmurs, attentive listening, a need to share and support each other.(II) So we have in front of our eyes a fragmented body, which has forgotten its qualities due to the internalization of these symbolic prisons. But thanks to the female solidarity, the appreciation of the house as a place to cocoon, the relationships between women, and the return to the first language, the traces of the distant past are renewed by the actions and words of some free women. These pave the way for the release of the Algerian female body that will learn again to watch, to walk outside, to reminisce, to talk about itself and to appreciate the presence of the beloved man. (III) The analysis of body parts visible in our corpus, the feminine posture, the gestures in which the tradition is recorded, the reactions that reveal both the physical and psychic dimension, the terms used by Djebar to talk about his feminine characters, allowed us to reveal a female body with a heart, memories, feelings, personalities and roles that are outside the framework imposed by the society. The female body able to make gestures, which falls within the time and space reclaimed, acquires a performative speech which, in turn, recreates and provides it with the opportunity to perform, while maintaining contact with the origins and the "living word". So we see a body and an identity shifting, constantly trying to form and to write

This thesis is based on literary, epigraphic, archaeological, iconographic and archaeozoological sources and studies the symbolic of the animals in the relationship between women and divinities. Two goddesses have been chosen for this purpose: Artemis and Demeter. They have in common the fact they take care of women at different moments of their lives. Two main parts compose the survey. First, a catalog lists 83 sanctuaries of Artemis and Demeter who have a link with animals, together with offerings found inside and myths and inscriptions associated with. A second index classifies all the animals connected with Artemis and Demeter: offerings of the sanctuaries from the first corpus, imageries and texts no connected with a shrine but showing a link between an animal species and a goddess.A synthetic analysis of information from the catalogs talks about three main interpretations on the presence of animals beside Artemis and Demeter. At first, fertility of women is very important in ancient Greece because it permits to renewing the civic body. The pig has a special relationship with Demeter about fecundity: during the Thesmophoria, the animal is used to assure the fertility of both women and fields. With Artemis, wetland animals are connected with the water and the life. The cattle are also offered to both goddesses in order to assure the perpetuation of the herd and the city at the same time. Then, the woman before her marriage is like a savage animal and she must be domesticated. Artemis takes care of young girls because she is the goddess of passages and transitions. She allows the domestication of the girls with an initiation called arkteia: during this ritual, the little girls make “the bear”. As divinity of the wild nature, Artemis also is assimilated to the Pόtnia Théron and has the power of life and death on both animals and women. She punishes the girls who transgress the rules: Callisto and Atalante. Artemis and Demeter are kourotrophic goddesses taking care of all gender children. However, if the animals with the divinities are close to the women, there are in connection too with the boys: the dog and the horse evoke the citizenship status of the men and the formation of the young boys, especially with Artemis. Some species are also chthonic characteristics, as the snake, the pig and the tortoise and make a link between the life and the death. Other animals incarnate the divinity: the boar of Kalydon has been send by Artemis because she was angry and a lot of animals are victims of ritual sacrifices and permit a communication with the gods and goddesses. Unfortunately, there are also some species with no real connection with Artemis and Demeter: there are offered in small number in the sanctuaries of both divinities or there contrariwise are given to all the gods

The Jewish orientation "Haredi" in Israel is the most conservative group and believes that historical traditions are important to follow while waiving from modern society. In today's society, it is difficult to distance ourselves from modernization. This incuses the haredic communities in Israel and the inferior position of women. This study analyzes three contemporary media materials that illuminate the haredi woman's roles as well as her position to Halacha and modern developments. The research aims to answer to what kind of roles the haredi-woman are ascribed in the programs Shtisel, Israel talar and Extrema äktenskap.

Hysteries, visionaries, zealot, shammers, simpletons or even sadomasochists are a few words or phrases among others which were or still are used by those in authority, the historians, the theologists, the philosophers including doctors to qualify the 18th century people who miraculously recovered and the Jansenist Convulsionaries from Paris. Dayil, Plangsat Bitrus. « Ethno-religious conflicts and gender in Nigeria's middle belt ». Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2015. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6409/.

Résumé :
This thesis explores and analyses the impact of ethno-religious conflicts in the city of Jos and other parts of the Middle Belt and Nigeria on gender relations and the lives of women. The thesis addresses the question of the impact of conflict on women beyond loss of life and property as seen in other literature. It shows how ongoing conflictual relations that are not always violent, but include aspects of political competition disadvantage women. The research locations covered by this research are urban areas. Data for this research was gathered through interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with 102 respondents, recruited through purposive sampling and willingness to participate in the interview. This thesis argues that the conflict dynamics affect the life chances of women on different levels because women are associated with the transcendence or transgression of group boundaries in their private life. The growing importance of group boundaries means that women’s life choices, such as marriage, are increasingly subject to public comment and criticism. Beyond the private, the growing importance of group boundaries makes it increasingly difficult for women to participate in typically female activities such as trading and selling in local markets. At the political level, the desire for ever smaller groups to be recognised works against the representation of women, who are seen as being much less capable than men of representing group interests. And within the public sector, too, the fallout from the crisis means that women here are also subject to increasing control and scrutiny.

Unearthed with thousands of documents related to this phenomenum, the compendium of speeches, letters and Sister Brigitte’s visions which come along with her spiritual advisor the oratorian Father Michel Pinel enable us to get to the heart of the convulsionary imagination and to develop many items which used to be left heart or little considered due to narrow investigations. Koen, Elizabeth Theresia. « Women in Ancient Egypt : the religious experiences of the non-royal woman ». Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/2498.

Résumé :
Thesis (MPhil (Ancient Studies)--University of Stellenbosch, 2008.
This thesis explores the importance of the function of religion in the life of the average, non-royal woman in Ancient Egyptian society. As Ancient Egyptian society and the historical documentation thereof were dominated by the male perspective, the extent of religious participation by women was, until recently, underestimated. Recent research has shown that women had taken part in, and in some cases even dominated, certain spheres of Ancient Egyptian religion. This included religious participation in public, as well as the practice of certain religious rituals in the home. The religious lives of ordinary women of non-royal families were studied by looking at their involvement in the public aspects of Egyptian religion, such as temples, tombs and festivals, as well as at the influence of religion on their identities as women and mothers. The research method followed was that of an iconographical analysis of original sources, which were classified and examined in order to establish their religious links to women of the middle and lower classes. A catalogue of sources is given, including sources depicting women participating in public rituals and objects used in a more domestic sphere. The first included tomb paintings and reliefs from tombs and temples, as well as objects given as public offerings to various deities. The second group included objects and visual depictions relating to fertility, birth and death. This thesis attempts better to understand and illuminate to what an extent the ordinary women of Ancient Egypt were involved in religious participation in their daily lives, as well as to illustrate the dimensions of this participation.

Downing, Marymay. « Pornography as a subject for religious studies : New directions for the field of women and religion ». Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6523.

Résumé :
The argument of this thesis is that pornography is a subject relevant for religious studies, particularly for the sub-field of women and religion. A review of the etymological derivation and history of the word 'pornography', and of various positions in the current definitional debate, provide the basis for defining the term. Methodologically, the thesis approach is feminist because it engages with feminist theory in religion and proceeds from the premise that pornography is experienced by the majority of women as a "problem" in need of analysis. Only a few religious studies scholars have treated the subject previously; their ideas are outlined and critically assessed. Chapter Two examines the history of modern pornography's self-conscious relation of antithesis with Christianity, beginning with pornographic literature of the late 18th century and including contemporary pornographic books and magazines. A third demonstration of pornography's relevance is presented in Chapter Three by means of analyses of several feminist critiques of pornography, each of which asserts significant correspondences between pornography and the Christian religion. Chapter Four proposes that newly developing theory about gender-based differences in experiences of the sacred is supported by an analysis of women's objections to pornography. Finally, by analyzing the abstract features of pornography's content and form, the argument is presented in Chapter Five that pornography can be seen to be functioning like a religion in contemporary society. Its meaningfulness, contrary to most expectations, can be compared to multivalent religious myths and symbols. The argument concludes by noting that pornography is a relevant subject for religious studies not only because it contributes to these various aspects of theory in the study of religion, especially in the field of women and religion, but also because the discipline of religious studies offers a particularly useful perspective on the problem of pornography. By elucidating more fully the nature of pornography in its contemporary manifestations, including the manner in which it can be seen to be functioning as a replacement for religion in modern society, a religious studies perspective helps to explain why pornography should be recognized as a problem of significant dimensions that merits more serious attention and efforts at resolution.
Since Germaine Coutard-Salmon's thesis, presented in 1980 and devoted to the monographic study of Chana Orloff (1888-1968), there were not many other works published about this artist. The aim of this thesis is to put an emphasis on the sculpted and graphic works of art (drawings, engravings and illustrations) of the artist, since 1910 until her death, and achieved in both Paris and Israel. This study will deal with the subjects, the technics, the supports, but also the aesthetic orientations of her work which made her a part of history and art history. Started in Paris under the auspices of a cubist's heritage and Art deco's temptation, her work – characterized by many portraits, Maternities and animalist subjects -, developed an aesthetic based on the simplification of shapes, their balancing and their being stretched and on frontal compositions mixed with a decorative ambition, which has often been compared to Modigliani, Archipenko or Nadelman's work. Then, from the end of the Second World War and the time of the creation of Israel's State, her art became more tormented and more expressive. This was also the moment when the Jewish State commissioned her to produce a great number of works of art. From a methodological point of view, this thesis will be based in particular, but not exclusively, on the scientific exploitation of the funds preserved until now, made up of the works and documents of the artist's workshop and will question the critical reception of Chana Orloff's work from the 1920's until now, as well as the conditions of its international diffusion (gallerists, art dealers, collectors.....) from a cultural, social and political point of view of art
