Résumé :
Previous studies find a strong relationship between armed conflict and gender equality, but only compare armed conflict to no armed conflict onset. However, opposition movements use different means to challenge governments, such as nonviolent or armed strategies. This study explores this variation and poses the question: How does the level of gender equality affect the onset of nonviolent campaigns and armed conflicts? It makes two contributions. First, I quantitatively test the impact of gender equality on different forms of conflict onset, and second, I propose a comprehensive gendered mobilization argument based on strategic choice theory. Nonviolent campaigns rely on mass participation, and the nonviolent conflict literature claims that they are open to a wider array of participants, including women, compared to armed conflicts. I argue that gender norms affect movements’ expectations of mobilization (mass or limited) as well as conflict norms (nonviolent or violent) in society, and subsequently, the choice of conflict strategy. I hypothesize that higher levels of gender equality, measured by fertility rate and female-to-male primary school enrolment ratio, increase the likelihood of nonviolent campaign onset, compared to both armed and no campaign onset. This study analyses country-year data from the UCDP and NAVCO datasets between 1961 and 2006 and finds that increases in gender equality are, on average, associated with an increased likelihood of nonviolent conflict onset.

Résumé :
Does a man who knits demonstrate courage? The question refers to the meanings attributed to knitting, which has traditionally been perceived as a female occupation performed in private space. In this article, referring to the past and the analysis of contemporary craft practice, I describe the process of deconstruction in this area. I am particularly interested in men knitting in public. The aim of my considerations is to analyze the difference between the meaning of what is male and female in knitting, and between hegemonic practice and subversive acts of deconstruction.

Résumé :
Background. The early detection of wearing-off in Parkinson disease (DEEP) observational study demonstrated that women with Parkinson’s disease (PD) carry an increased risk (80.1%) for wearing-off (WO). This post hoc analysis of DEEP study evaluates gender differences on WO and associated phenomena.Methods. Patients on dopaminergic treatment for ≥1 year were included in this multicenter observational cross-sectional study. In a single visit, WO was diagnosed based on neurologist assessment as well as the use of the 19-item wearing-off questionnaire (WOQ-19); WO was defined for scores ≥2. Post hoc analyses were conducted to investigate gender difference for demographic and clinical features with respect to WO.Results. Of 617 patients enrolled, 236 were women and 381 were men. Prevalence of WO was higher among women, according to both neurologists’ judgment (61.9% versus 53.8%,P=0.045) and the WOQ-19 analysis (72.5% versus 64.0%,P=0.034). In patients with WO (WOQ-19), women experienced ≥1 motor symptom in 72.5% versus 64.0% in men and ≥1 nonmotor symptom in 44.5% versus 36.7%, in men.Conclusions. Our results suggest WO as more common among women, for both motor and nonmotor symptoms. Prospective studies are warranted to investigate this potential gender-effect.

Résumé :
This essay addresses the idea of perspective as it is suggested by C. Geertz. This idea presupposes that (wo)man interacts with the surrounding physical world while taking separate yet overlapping positions grounded in such frames as common-sense, aesthetics, religion, science, and others. The author proposes to introduce another perspective which speaks for a unique frame which (wo)man composes while interacting with other (wo)men. This is an anthropological perspective framed as a particular case. The author refers to a number of American anthropologists who directly or indirectly yet critically appeal to Geertz’s heritage to show what is necessary to compose the foundations of the perspective in question. In this respect, G. Marcus’s and M. Fischer’s crisis of representation, L. Abu-Lughod’s the particular, J. Limón’s modernity-postmodernity relation, and P. Rabinow’s, A. Stavrianakis’s and J. Faubion’s triad of the present, the actual and the contemporary is discussed. The author offers a model to analyse the interaction in question. At the same time, the author suggests that the anthropological perspective should be understood in terms of self-awareness and complexity to approach other (wo)men creatively and critically.

Résumé :
This paper is an exploration of the potential for as yet ‘unseen’ political spaces for wo/men. It acknowledges the reality of a system in the West that at a foundational level has deemed the public realm to be the preserve of the masculine, and required wo/men to negotiate themselves into it in order to in- habit it and function within it. The paper draws on fairy tales, myths, stories, and writers who work with them, as alternative imaginary resources of wisdom and inspiration that find resonance with Sophia Wisdom traditions. In particular, it explores a story called The Voices of the Wells or The Well-Maidens, finding connection with biblical narratives that connect wo/men to the wells and generate fresh perspectives about our relationship to the earth. The aim of this work is not to challenge existing structures in order that they allow greater entry and fairer allocation of resources to wo/men. Instead, it problemetises the precepts of the system itself and, in doing so, attempts to open up potential for a different way of being, one that celebrates power with rather than power over and seeks the flourishing of all people, the earth and the creatures living on it.

Résumé :
This article examines the relation between gender diversity and earnings quality for Australian firms from 2005 to 2013. We draw on the work of Kanter, highlighting the importance of the proportion of women on the board when measuring diversity. We show that all-male and skewed boards have lower earnings quality while that of tilted and balanced boards is higher. In addition, a critical mass of women is achieved when some 30% of directors are females. Performance and risk do not influence the relation. We contribute by presenting evidence supporting critical mass theory. Furthermore, our work adds to the recent debate on whether the association between gender diversity and earnings quality is U-shaped, rather than linear. Our results have implications for regulation and practice. We identify the need for a critical mass of women, rather than tokens, to enhance earnings quality.

Résumé :
Feminized sexual consumption has gained increasing legitimacy in the marketplace. Despite calls for critical, feminist perspectives, extant research in marketing continues to prioritize its emancipatory implications. In this article, we draw on the cultural theory of “postfeminism” to critically analyze the sexual narratives of young women. Tightly bound with neoliberal ethics, a postfeminist orientation encourages women—purported to have achieved equality thanks to past feminist activism—to work on, invest in, and manage their sexual lives. This discourse manifests in women’s sexual and intimate experiences in two key ways: first, through their attempts to establish authority and control in their relationships, an endeavor thwarted by neoliberal and patriarchal logics; and second, through an implicit submissive sexual positioning that privileges masculine meanings of sexual pleasure. These findings suggest an inherent contradiction between participants’ understanding of themselves as free, able, and equal, and the constraining, subjugating experiences shaping their relationships and (sexual) lives. Our key contribution to feminist critique and theorizing is to illustrate how postfeminist discourses operate to mask and deny oppressive patriarchal discourses, which paradoxically increases their strength under the guise of female emancipation and consumer choice.

Résumé :
There is a growing discourse about a powerful untapped economic force in Kenya, the (wo)-men. The debate has triggered political pronouncements and the formulation of female-specific empowerment policies through entrepreneurship, which was the basis of this study. The study analyzed the influence of resource support on their MSEs’ growth. The study design was a Cross-sectional Survey, anchored on Resource-based Theory. It based on a Positivist Paradigm and applied a Quantitative Multi-method approach. Using multi-stage sampling, 375 adult female entrepreneurs participated in the study. Data was analyzed through inferential methods; correlation coefficient and coefficient of determination. The results revealed there being strong relationship. For example, first step results showed significant indirect relationship of entrepreneur’s traits on growth through resource support, b= .0199, BCa CI (.0110, .0304) and R2 (R-sq med .1391). Also, considering the Preacher and Kelley Kappa-squared, k2=.1755, 95% BCa CI (.1130, .2341), there is a significant indirect relationship between entrepreneur’s traits and performance through resource support, meaning that there are other mediators other than entrepreneurs’ profile. This was further supported by the normal theory tests for indirect effect where b=.0199, z=4.4065 and p=<.001. Résumé :
Abstract Introduction: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) decreases bone mineral density and increases osteoporotic fracture (OsteoFx) risk. Hypothesis: To assess OsteoFx clinical risk factors (CRF) most predictive of future OsteoFx among men with prostate cancer on ADT. Methods: 4370 electronic medical records were reviewed of adult men with prostate cancer on cancer therapy +/- anti-osteoporosis therapy (Anti-OsteoRx) from 2011–2019. Cancer therapy included ADT (anti-androgens, GnRH agonists & antagonists, orchiectomy) and supplemental cancer therapy (SupplRx) (prostatectomy, brachytherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy). Anti-OsteoRx included bisphosphonates, denosumab, and parathyroid hormone analogs. Patients with other cancers within 5 years of initial visit, metastasis, and traumatic fractures were excluded. Retrospective analysis was done to determine baseline characteristics, type and duration of ADT, Anti-OsteoRx, SupplRx, and osteoporosis CRF. Results: 615 men on ADT +/- SupplRx +/- Anti-OsteoRx were included in the study. 10.08% had OsteoFx irrespective of SupplRx or Anti-OsteoRx. Comparing the OsteoFx group to the non-fracture group, the following CRF were found to be statistically significant (p <0.05): age at prostate cancer diagnosis (75.10 +/- 11.80 vs 71.59 +/- 9.80 y), diabetes mellitus (DM) (33.9 vs 19%), pre-existing comorbidities affecting bone (PreCo) (41.9 vs 24.8%), steroid use (11.3 vs 4.0%), and anti-convulsant and proton-pump inhibitor (med) use (45.2 vs 26.8%). 9.89% of 374 men on ADT only without (wo) Anti-OsteoRx fractured. Statistically significant CRF for OsteoFx were age (76.86 +/- 10.55 vs 73.02 +/- 10.06 y), DM (40.5 vs 19.6%), PreCo (45.9 vs. 26.4%), and med use (48.6 vs. 25.5%). In the following subgroups there were no statistically significant difference in CRF:•7.64% of 170 men on ADT + SupplRx wo Anti-OsteoRx •19.23% of 52 men on ADT only + Anti-OsteoRx •10.52% of 19 men on ADT + SupplRx + Anti-OsteoRx To increase statistical power, patients on ADT +/- SupplRx were assessed:•Among 71 men on ADT +/- SupplRx + Anti-OsteoRx, there were no statistically significant differences in CRF•Among the 544 men on ADT +/- SupplRx wo Anti-OsteoRx, significant CRF for OsteoFx were age (75.16 + 11.70 vs 71.37 + 9.85 y), DM (38 vs 19.4%), PreCo (38 vs 24.1%), steroid use (12 vs 3.8%), and med use (48 vs 24.3%) Discussion: Men with prostate cancer requiring ADT have a higher incidence of osteoporosis defined by DXA prior to initiating ADT compared to age-matched cohorts (Hussain et al). Our study revealed ADT with CRF is associated with OsteoFx irrespective of SupplRx or Anti-OsteoRx. Limitations include inability to evaluate efficacy of Anti-OsteoRx due to insufficient power. Conclusion: OsteoFx risk assessment utilizing CRF, FRAX, DXA with timely intervention may prevent OsteoFx in these high-risk patients.

Résumé :
The author attempts to find a way between defence of religion and the bible on the one hand and the exodus from religion and church on the other. In reclaiming the authority of wo/men as religious-theological subjects for interpreting biblical texts, the act of biblical interpretation emerges as a moment in the global struggle for liberation. This essay has four parts: Scripture as a site of struggle over theological authority; the bible as a site of struggle over religious meaning; wo/men's struggles as a site of biblical interpretation; and reclaiming a radical democratic feminist tradition.

The Red Detachment of Women is a Chinese revolutionary ballet that is often characterized as feminist based on its portryal of female soldiers. This view is based on the incomprehensive view that the era of its production was devoid of desire, sex, and gender. This article, using the 1970 filmed version of the ballet, utilizes crossdressing as a lead and through an analysis of costumes, identifies the gender differences between the characters on stage. Furthermore, the article explores actor-audience interactions and argues that the gender difference is initiated by an implicit male gaze embedded within the production. The Red Detachment of Women is significant as a specimen of gender politics during the Cultural Revolution, as well as an example of undetected masculine view in popular culture production.

Résumé :
Manifold spoors of human presence can be found in the Central Sahara - from prehistoric remains to contemporary tracks of men or animals. These objects constitute timescapes where locals - the Teda - are “tracking in time.” The article describes how such timescapes are constituted and how tracking takes places here. Following the Liebenberg-Carruthers-debate, the author asks whether or not “tracking in time” can be considered as science and links the results to a wider discussion about new (local) approaches to African anthropology, history, and archaeology.

Résumé :
IntroductionIn Britain, ethnic inequalities in STIs diagnoses persist. We hypothesised that these inequalities are associated with variations in sexual behaviour, which are influenced by differences in socioeconomic deprivation (SED) and mediated by substance use.MethodsData from 14,563 participants of Britain’s third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles, a probability sample survey (N=15,162), were analysed by gender and ethnicity: white British (WB, reference category), black Caribbean (BC), black African (BA), Indian, Pakistani, white other (WO), and mixed ethnicity (ME). Using multivariable regression we examined ethnic variations in reported STI diagnoses adjusted for age, partner numbers (last 5y), recreational drug use (last 1y), and SED, and calculated adjusted odds ratios (AOR).ResultsSED was higher in BC, BA, and Pakistani participants than other ethnicities (50% vs. 16%-38%, p<0.0001). compared with men from other ethnicities, BC and BA men reported higher partner numbers (p<0.0001), and concurrent partnerships (27% and 39% respectively vs. 4%–15%, p=0.001). compared with women from other ethnicities, ME women reported higher partner numbers (p<0.0001) and concurrency (14% vs. 2%–8%, p=0.0005). Recreational drug use was highest among WO and ME participants (26% vs. 4%-15% among other ethnicities; p<0.0001). Reported STI diagnosis was highest among BC men (8.7) and ME women (6.7%), and remained AOR high after adjustment for BC men (2.68, 95%CI: 1.13–6.34) and ME women (2.03, 95%CI: 1.11–3.68).DiscussionEthnic variations in sexual behaviours, mediators, and SED partially explain higher STI diagnoses among BC men and ME women highlighting need for holistic interventions addressing these broader determinants.

This paper investigates the alternative spirituality based on ecofeminism, meaning excavating the feminine spirituality before the birth of monotheism. Feminine spirituality exposed the female god, that is Goddess even before the pre-(his)tory. Faith on the existence of Goddess were not only existed within the Egypt, Greek, and the West but also in ancient Indonesia. Ecofeminist spirituality connected the spirit of the Nature, Wo-men corporeality and female sexuality.

Résumé :
Abstract Studies on English language learning materials indicate that women are underrepresented and often appear in low-status professions, though gender equality increases within the last decade (Sunderland, 2015). To what degree does this finding apply for textbooks for learners of Dutch as a Second Language (DSL)? To our knowledge, there are no studies into gender and profession in DSL materials. Dutch however, constitutes an interesting case as both female, male and ‘gender neutral’ professional role nouns exist, while their use is not formally regulated. We systematically analyzed textual and pictorial representations of female and male professionals in textbook chapters about work in fifteen DSL textbooks published within the last 50 years. We drew on quantitative (e.g., number of fe/male and ‘gender neutral’ professional names; instances of male generics and firstness; number of depicted wo/men) and qualitative (e.g., nature of the most frequent professional names; categorization of textbook images) methods to do so. Results show that women are not underrepresented in dialogues and pictures, but that dialogue themes are unequally divided over women and men. Moreover, women are backgrounded through male generics and male firstness and female professional names appear less frequently than male names. Women are also described in gender typical roles, whereas men are not. This holds for both older (1974–2009) and recent textbooks (2011–2017). Overall, more ‘gender neutral’ nouns refer to men in the corpus, but they are used more frequently to refer to women within the last decade. Future studies should address the present theme from psycholinguistic and classroom discourse perspectives and consider additional analytical domains (e.g. chapters about family) and foci (e.g. analyses of verbs associated with wo/men). We discuss pedagogical implications (e.g., screen materials for male firstness; describe women in a greater variety of roles; reverse gender roles in class) for those with concern for gender equality in language education.

Résumé :
The article examines the influence of different forms of the military identity of veterans on the degree of their social adaptation. We define “military identity” as a result of the social identity of a service(wo)man with the military due to the internalization of values and norms adopted in the military sphere. A “veteran” is a service(wo)man who served in the army, participated in combat operations, and was demobilized in connection with the end of the term of service or for health reasons, regardless of the types of military forces and military service. We have used a sociological method of measuring the stable, situational, and unformed types of veterans’ military identity based on the following criteria: social identification, the strength of connection with the army, biographical importance of military service, perception of the army as a family, recognition of the individual in the army, existential assessment of military service, the importance of military practices after demobilization, social contacts with former service(wo)men, the positive assessment of the military culture of obedience/discipline. We have studied the influence of the following factors – duration of staying in the combat zone, conscription age, motivation to join the army, marital status, and traumatic combat experience – on the formation of military identity. According to the quota sample, the results of the study “Military identity and social adaptation of Ukrainian veterans” are presented; 400 veterans (n = 400) were interviewed according to the quota sample. We found out that veterans with a stable military identity mainly had a low level of social adaptability to the civilian life; veterans with a situational form of military identity mostly had a medium level of social adaptability; veterans with an unformed type of military identity were the most adapted to the civilian life.
