Résumé :
One of the most important types that used to transfer data between nodes without using wires is a “wireless communication network”, where the transmission of data is censored remotely by using electromagnetic waves such as radio waves that usually implemented in the physical layer of the network. Continuous improvements in wireless network technology have reduced the security and speed differences between types of networks (wired and wireless), but in turn, increased security threats to wirelessly transmitted data. Wireless networks are weak in terms of "privacy protection" because anyone who is within the coverage area of a wireless network can attempt to break into that network. Hacking incidents have been reported frequently in places with shared free networks, and it has been observed that the places of open distributed networks of the Internet are most at risk of complete penetration of your phone or PC data. To solve this problem, several programs have been developed that provide protection for wireless networks that differ in terms of security. Some of them did not provide sufficient protection for wireless networks, such as Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), and others made progress in preventing intrusions compared to their predecessors, such as Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA).

Résumé :
Abstract In this conceptual paper, we discuss the concept of hospital of the future (HoF) and the requirements for its wireless connectivity. The HoF will be mostly wireless, connecting patients, healthcare professionals, sensors, computers and medical devices. Spaces of the HoF are first characterized in terms of communicational performance requirements. In order to fulfil the stringent requirements of future healthcare scenarios, such as enhanced performance, security, safety, privacy, and spectrum usage, we propose a flexible hybrid optical-radio wireless network to provide efficient, high-performance wireless connectivity for the HoF. We introduce the concept of connected HoF exploiting reconfigurable hybrid optical-radio networks. Such a network can be dynamically reconfigured to transmit and receive optical, radio or both signals, depending on the requirements of the application. We envisage that HoF will consist of numerous communication devices and hybrid optical-radio access points to transmit data using radio waves and visible light. Light-based communications exploit the idea of visible light communications (VLC), where solid-state luminaries, white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) provide both room illumination as well as optical wireless communications (OWC). The hybrid radio-optical communication system can be used in principle in every scenario of the HoF. In addition to the hybrid access, we also propose a reconfigurable optical-radio communications wireless body area network (WBAN), extending the conventional WBAN to more generic and highly flexible solution. As the radio spectrum is becoming more and more congested, hybrid wireless network approach is an attractive solution to use the spectrum more efficiently. The concept of HoF aims at enhancing healthcare while using hospital resources efficiently. The enormous surge in novel communication technologies such as internet of things (IoT) sensors and wireless medical communications devices could be undermined by spectral congestion, security, safety and privacy issues of radio networks. The considered solution, combining optical and radio transmission network could increase spectral efficiency, enhancing privacy while reducing patient exposure to radio frequency (RF). Parallel radio-optical communications can enhance reliability and security. We also discuss possible operation scenarios and applications that can be introduced in HoF as well as outline potential challenges.

Résumé :
Communication via wireless devices provides many benefits to companies and users, such as portability and flexibility, productivity improvement, and low installation fee. Wireless technology covers a variety of abilities on use and needs. A WLAN device as an example allows users to get mobile from a place to another without wires attached and connection loss. Wirelesss means more flexible, more efficient, and cost reduced. Adhoc network such as Bluetooth allows for data synchronization with network system and sharing application among devices. Bluetooth functions to diminish wires for printers and other supporting devices. Portable devices such as PDA and cell phone allow remote users to synchronize personal databases and provide accesses to email, browsing, and internet access. Thus, security risks are very influential on wireless network. Some of the risks are almost the same as the wired network, few are derived from other cable networks and some others are new.

Résumé :
Techniques for wireless energy harvesting (WEH) are emerging as a fascinating set of solutions to extend the lifetime of energy-constrained wireless networks, and are commonly regarded as a key functional technique for almost perpetual communications. For example, with WEH technology, wireless devices are able to harvest energy from different light sources or Radio Frequency (RF) signals broadcast by ambient or dedicated wireless transmitters to support their operation and communications capabilities. WEH technology will have increasingly wider range of use in upcoming applications such as wireless sensor networks, Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, and the Internet of Things. In this paper, the usability and fundamental limits of joint RF and solar cell or photovoltaic harvesting based M2M communication systems are studied and presented. The derived theoretical bounds are in essence based on the Shannon capacity theorem, combined with selected propagation loss models, assumed additional link nonidealities, diversity processing, as well as the given energy harvesting and storage capabilities. Fundamental performance limits and available capacity of the communicating link are derived and analyzed, together with extensive numerical results evaluated in different practical scenarios, including realistic implementation losses and state-of-the-art printed supercapacitor performance figures with voltage doubler-based voltage regulator. In particular, low power sensor type communication applications using passive and semi-passive wake-up radio (WuR) are addressed in the study. The presented analysis principles and results establish clear feasibility regions and performance bounds for wireless energy harvesting based low rate M2M communications in the future IoT networks.

Résumé :
The contemporary wireless transmitter in addition to information symbols transmits also training symbols in order to help the receivers in the estimation of the information symbols by estimating the channel state information (CSI). In this paper, we look at existing wireless communication technologies in light of environment-aware wireless communications, which is a new concept of wireless communications that queries the time-invariant CSI from the local or global database, using information about the transmitter and receiver location. Thus, this study is the first critical review of the potential of today’s terrestrial wireless communication systems including wireless cellular technologies (GSM, UMTS, LTE, NR), wireless local area networks (WLANs), and wireless sensor networks (WSNs), for estimating CSI, the ratio between training and information symbols and the rate of channel variation, and the potential use of time invariable CSI in environment aware wireless communications. The research reveals, that early communication systems provide means for narrowband channel estimation and the CSI is only available as channel attenuation based on signal level measurements. By increasing the frequency bandwidth of communications, the CSI is estimated in some form of channel impulse response (CIR) in almost all currently used radio technologies, but this information is generally not available outside the communication systems. Also, the CSI is estimated only for the channel with active communications. The new radio technology (NR) offers the possibility of estimating the CIR for non-active channels as well, and thus the possibility of initiating environmentally aware wireless communications.

Résumé :
Handoffs for neonatal resuscitation involve communicating critical delivery information (CDI). The authors sought to achieve ≥95% communication of CDI during resuscitation team requests. CDI included name of caller, urgency of request, location of delivery, gestation of fetus, status of amniotic fluid, and indication for presence of the resuscitation team. Three interventions were implemented: verbal scripted handoff, Spök text messaging, and Engage text messaging. Percentages of CDI communications were analyzed using statistical process control. Following implementation of Engage, the communication of all CDI, except for indication, was ≥95%; communication of indication occurred 93% of the time. Control limits for most CDI were narrower with Engage, indicating greater reliability of communication compared to the verbal handoff and Spök. Delayed resuscitation team arrival, a countermeasure, was not higher with text messaging compared to verbal handoff ( P = 1.00). Text messaging improved communication during high-risk deliveries, and it may represent an effective tool for other delivery centers.

Résumé :
In scientific, military, and industrial sectors, the development of robust and efficient submarine wireless communication links is of enormous interest. Underwater wireless communications can be carried out through acoustic, radio frequency (RF), and optical waves. Underwater optical communication is not a new idea, but it has recently been considered because seawater exhibits a window of reduced absorption both in the visible spectrum and long-wavelength UV light (UV-A). Compared to its bandwidth limited acoustic counterpart, underwater optical wireless communications (UOWCs) can support higher data rates at low latency levels. Underwater wireless communication networks are important in ocean exploration, military tactical operations, environmental and water pollution monitoring. Anyway, given the rapid development of UOWC technology, documents are still needed showing the state of the art and the progress made by the most current research. This paper aims to examine current technologies, and those potentially available soon, for Underwater Optical Wireless Communication and to propose a new perspective using UV-A radiation.

Résumé :
Intrabody communication (IBC) is a wireless communication technology using the human body to develop body area networks (BANs) for remote and ubiquitous monitoring. IBC uses living tissues as a transmission medium, achieving power-saving and miniaturized transceivers, making communications more robust against external interference and attacks on the privacy of transmitted data. Due to these advantages, IBC has been included as a third physical layer in the IEEE 802.15.6 standard for wireless body area networks (WBANs) designated as Human Body Communication (HBC). Further research is needed to compare both methods depending on the characteristics of IBC application. Challenges remain for an optimal deployment of IBC technology, such as the effect of long-term use in the human body, communication optimization through more realistic models, the influence of both anthropometric characteristics and the subject’s movement on the transmission performance, standardization of communications, and development of small-size and energy-efficient prototypes with increased data rate. The purpose of this work is to provide an in-depth overview of recent advances and future challenges in human body/intrabody communication for wireless communications and mobile computing.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are becoming increasingly popular these days. One among the major technological developments of today are UAVs or drones. The coordination and coverage capabilities of large clusters of UAVs, or their cooperative capabilities for such goals as terrain mapping, make them of particular interest. This paper explores the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in smart and modern cities in depth. Future wireless networks will likely include UAVs to facilitate wireless broadcasting and support high-speed transmissions. Various layer techniques are discussed in this paper. Moreover, an overview of the latest UAV communication technologies and network topologies has been presented. Military and commercial applications have attracted a lot of interest in unmanned aerial vehicles. Due to their low cost and flexible deployment, UAVs are considered valuable in 5G and 6G networks due to their communication capabilities. Like aerial base stations, relays, or mobile users in cellular networks, UAVs can provide airborne wireless coverage in a variety of ways. Wireless links can only be established temporarily with UAVs. A great challenge is to extend UAV communication's lifetime and develop low-power, green UAV communication. A comprehensive study of green UAV communications has been presented in this paper. Furthermore, an overview of UAV applications is also illustrated. Additionally, some promising research topics and methods are being discussed.

In contrast to the conventional MC DS-CDMA wireless communication system employing the time (T)-domain spreading only, in the present paper the broad-band wireless MC DS-CDMA wireless communication schemes employ both the time (T)-domain and frequen-cy (F)-domain spreading, i.e., employ the TF-domain spreading. The bit-error rate (BER) performance of the space-time spreading assisted broadband MC DS-CDMA wireless communications system is investigated for down-link transmissions associated with the single user and multiuser generalized detectors and is compared with that of the single user correlation detector and the multiuser decorrelating detector. Our study demonstra-tes that with appropriately selecting the system parameters, the broadband MC DS-CDMA wireless communi-cation system using the space-time spreading assisted transmit diversity constitutes a promising downlink tran-smission scheme. This scheme is capable to support ubiquitous communications over diverse communication environments without the BER performance degradation

Résumé :
Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) have received a great deal of attention from the wireless communication community due to their powerful ability to improve the wireless communication environment. Dual-band RIS enables aperture to share two bands, improving spectrum utilization in wireless communications and thus expanding communication capacity. However, most of the reported dual-band RISs cannot achieve independent controls of the dual-band phases, which greatly limits their practical application in wireless communications. In this paper, we propose a dual-band 3-bit RIS to achieve independent controls of the reflection phases in two frequency bands by designing two tunable structures without raising the profile. It also exhibits low sensitivity to incident angles between 0° and 50°. Thereafter, the beam steering ability of the proposed RIS is further investigated with experiments under normal and oblique incidences at two frequencies, which demonstrates the powerful potential of RISs to manipulate the electromagnetic wave propagation environment.

Résumé :
Rural transportation systems have different features and needs than their urban counterparts. To address safety and efficiency concerns in rural environments, advanced rural transportation systems (ARTS) test and deploy appropriate intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies, many of which require communication support. However, wireless communication systems that currently serve urban areas often are not available or suitable in rural environments. Thus, a need exists to identify communication solutions that are likely to address successfully the needs and features of ARTS applications. Current and emerging wireless communications systems and technologies have been systematically assessed with respect to rural ITS applications. Wireless communication functions associated with rural ITS functions are first identified. Then requirements for applicable communication technologies in the rural environment are defined. Existing and emerging wireless communication systems and technologies are reviewed and evaluated by a systematic process of assessing rural ITS wireless solutions. Finally, recommendations for future research and operational tests are offered. The analysis results are expected to benefit rural ITS planners by identifying suitable wireless solutions for different rural contexts.

For military divers, having a robust, secure, and undetectable wireless communication system available is a fundamental element. Wireless intercoms using acoustic waves are currently used. These systems, even if reliable, have the defect of being easily identifiable and detectable. Visible light can pass through sea water. Therefore, light can be used to develop short-range wireless communication systems. To realize secure close-range underwater wireless communication, the Underwater Optical Wireless Communication (UOWC) can be a valid alternative to acoustic wireless communication. UOWC is not a new idea, but the problem of the presence of sunlight and the possibility of using near-ultraviolet radiation (near-UV) has not been adequately addressed in the literature yet. In military applications, the possibility of using invisible optical radiation can be of great interest. In this paper, a feasibility study is carried out to demonstrate that UOWC can be performed using near-ultraviolet radiation. The proposed system can be useful for wireless voice communications between military divers as well as amateur divers.

Résumé :
This paper presents the systematic evaluation of performance of indoor optical wireless communication using different modulation schemes and micro electro mechanical systems - single channel imaging receiver (MEMS-SCIR). For the future modern world, indoor optical wireless communications (OWC) play a vital role. The main objective is to compare the performance of various modulation schemes in terms of their bit error probability. On -off keying (OOK) and pulse position modulation (PPM) are widely used in optical wireless communication for its simplicity. Here different digital modulation schemes are approached; bit error rate (BER) is calculated over additive white Gaussian noise channel (AWGN). M-quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) gives a better BER performance compared to the M- phase shift keying (MPSK). Thus, MQAM based MEMS-SCIR provides better performance in indoor optical wireless communications.

This article discusses about wireless communication technologies such as IEEE 802.15.4, Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) and Near Field Communication (NFC) technologies are described. The part of industry and everyday life could be significantly impacted by Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a collection of sensor nodes that communicate with one another using wireless technologies. These nodes gather data and send it to the gateway across the Internet, the informal cloud. In a WSN, node-to-node communication may be multi-hop or direct. Every new concept or technology attempts to be integrated into the WSN in order to increase efficiency, improve user experience, and consume less power. Near Field Communications (NFC), a type of wireless networking technology allows to establish simple, secure and interactive communication. iPack is a technology that focuses on integrating NFC into pre-existing systems to create a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) that supports NFC. Furthermore, data from a sensor node can be transferred to devices with a single touch by using this method. NFC with WSN is a single hop communication. The NFC interface also offers a safe wireless connection.

Résumé :
The use of wireless-based technology devices at this time is so much, good used for voice and data communications. Because wireless technology utilizes frequency high to deliver a communication, then the vulnerability to security is also higher compared to other communication technologies. Various security measures can be taken through communication devices used by users and by operators who provide services communication. Weaknesses of wireless networks in general can be divided into 2 types, namely weaknesses on the configuration and weakness on the type of encryption used. Broadly speaking, the gap on wireless network spans over four layers where the four layers actually are is the process of occurrence of data communication on wireless media. The four layers are layers physical layer, network layer, user layer, and application layer. The security handling models that occur in each layer of wireless technology can be done, among others, by: hide SSID, make use of WEP keys, WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK, facility implementation, MAC filtering, installation of captive portal infrastructure.

Résumé :
Railway, subway, airplane, and other transportation systems have drawn an increasing interest on the use of wireless communications for critical and noncritical services to improve performance, reliability, and passengers experience. Smart transportation systems require the use of critical communications for operation and control, and wideband services can be provided using noncritical communications. High speed train (HST) is one of the best test cases for the analysis of communication links and specification of the general requirements for train control and supervision, passenger communications, and onboard and infrastructure wireless sensors. In this paper, we analyze in detail critical and noncritical networks mainly using the HST as a test case. First, the different types of links for smart rail transportation are described, specifying the main requirements of the transportation systems, communications, and their applications for different services. Then, we propose a network architecture and requirements of the communication technologies for critical and noncritical data. Finally, an analysis is made for the future technologies, including the fifth-generation (5G) communications, millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz (THz), and satellites for critical and high-capacity communications in transportation.

Résumé :
Motivated by the recent success of Machine Learning (ML) tools in wireless communications, the idea of semantic communication by Weaver from 1949 has gained attention. It breaks with Shannon’s classic design paradigm by aiming to transmit the meaning of a message, i.e., semantics, rather than its exact version and, thus, enables savings in information rate. In this work, we extend the fundamental approach from Basu et al. for modeling semantics to the complete communications Markov chain. Thus, we model semantics by means of hidden random variables and define the semantic communication task as the data-reduced and reliable transmission of messages over a communication channel such that semantics is best preserved. We consider this task as an end-to-end Information Bottleneck problem, enabling compression while preserving relevant information. As a solution approach, we propose the ML-based semantic communication system SINFONY and use it for a distributed multipoint scenario; SINFONY communicates the meaning behind multiple messages that are observed at different senders to a single receiver for semantic recovery. We analyze SINFONY by processing images as message examples. Numerical results reveal a tremendous rate-normalized SNR shift up to 20 dB compared to classically designed communication systems.

This article focuses on field bus technology, a digital two-way conul1unications protocol. It is designed to take advantage of intelligent instrumentation equipped with microprocessors to communicate between the field and the control room. Because it can communicate large quantities of data from the field devices, industrial networks tying together field bus instruments open the way for complex control and automation tasks. As field bus evolves, some think that computer networking will play an increasingly important role and improve the performance in the plant. Both Profibus and Fieldbus Foundation provide for Ethernet capability. Wireless communication is also likely to play a potential role in field bus systems. There is a potential for wireless in data acquisition. Issues still needed to be worked out: electrical storms can interfere with communications and wires must be strung to power the devices.
