Résumé :
While there are some passages in the Gospel of Mark that seem to counter the image of the philosopher—namely, the passages that describe Jesus’ emotions—the character of Jesus is often portrayed in terms that are analogous to Graeco-Roman descriptions of the ideal philosophical sage, especially Stoic ones. Similarly, Matthew’s Jesus is frequently characterized in a manner resembling the image of the philosophical sage. More so than in the Gospel of Mark, this applies even to Matthew’s description of Jesus’ emotions, some aspects of which do not correspond to typical images of the philosophical wise man. Also, in Luke the character of Jesus is consistently portrayed in a way that resembles Graeco-Roman descriptions of the ideal philosophical sage. This includes the description of Jesus’ feelings. Of the three Gospels, Mark, Matthew, and Luke, Jesus is most clearly characterized as a philosophical sage in the Gospel of Luke.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
According to estimates of the World Health Organization, the number of people living with dementia will double almost every 20 years for the foreseeable future. While in 2010, there were 35.6 million people with dementia worldwide, this number is expected to increase to 65.7 million by 2030, and to 115.4 million by 2050. The primary aim of this book Dementia Care: International Perspectives is to present arrangements for the care of people with dementia and their families in different parts of the world and to serve as a stimulus to develop new ideas for the provision of such care. While preparing this book, we asked the world’s leading experts in the field of dementia five questions—having initially gathered information about these issues through an Internet search. The results of this enquiry are shown for 45 of the countries, and the summary is presented. We have attempted to include, as far as we can, within the constraints of publishing a volume which is manageable and digestible for the reader, the descriptions of care for people with dementia in 47 countries, hoping that these descriptions will reflect the wide spread of countries, big and small, geographically diverse from all continents, and encompassing the major language and culture groups.

Résumé :
This autobiography, published for the first time, describes the life and work of Helmut Simon (1922–2013), former constitutional judge and President of the Kirchentag, who described himself as an “outsider” and “lateral thinker”. Helmut Simon has recorded what he experienced against the background of contemporary history, put his impressions and experiences in order, given an account of his life and work, and drawn up a personal balance sheet while self-critically reviewing previous positions. The descriptions are interrupted by a series of – in part very personal – digressions and a selection of striking texts, the subject matter of which has occupied the author for several periods. The work is preceded by a detailed foreword by the authorised editors Dr. Peter Becker, a long-time companion, and Heide Simon, the second wife of Helmut Simon.

Résumé :
Varieties of English with substrate tone languages are tone languages. Detailed descriptions of sentence-wide tone structures in Nigerian, Ghanaian, and Cantonese English show that British English words with initial stress have H-tone melodies, while other words have MH or LH melodies. These languages vary in the use of final intonational boundary tones and the extent to which phonological downstep on H-tones is triggered by non-overt (floating) low tones (Nigerian and Ghanaian English) or by overt tones only (Cantonese English). The analyses of Nigerian English and Cantonese English are supported by the results of production and perception experiments run on location with native speakers. While the structural differences deprive these languages of the many intonation contrasts that characterize British English, two structural contrasts that British English lacks are identified in the tonal varieties.

Austin, Michael J., et Sarah Carnochan. Practice Research in the Human Services. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197518335.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Practice Research in the Human Services: A University-Agency Partnership Model offers a practical approach to conducting practice research in the field of human services. This evolving form of applied research seeks to understand practice in the context of the relationships between service providers and service users, between service providers and their managers, between agency-based service providers and community advocacy and support groups, and between agency managers and policymakers. Practice research represents a form of evidence-informed practice that involves a wide array of research designs and methods, in contrast to the narrower emphasis on experimental designs that characterizes evidence-based practice. The emerging principles and practices associated with practice research highlight: (1) including multiple, diverse stakeholders, (2) maximizing and negotiating participation, (3) promoting practitioner engagement in all phases of the research process, and (4) developing new identities for participants as research-minded practitioners and practice-minded researchers. The book is designed for researchers, practitioners, service users, and students, and it focuses on concrete experiences that illustrate the processes and activities involved in a specific, locally negotiated model of practice research. The book describes multiple practice research studies across an array of fields of practice in the human services, focusing on the research questions, designs, roles and relationships that have been developed in the context of a university-agency practice research partnership. These descriptions and stories are used to construct a comprehensive, detailed picture of the research process. Based upon these descriptions, the book synthesizes a set of broader principles and guidelines for practice researchers.

Résumé :
At the time of the European invasion of the Andes (1532 ce), many of the shrines (huacas) around Cuzco were organized along ritual pathways (ceques) that radiated out from the Temple of the Sun, at the heart of the city. According to the few existing descriptions of this ritual system, there were more than 328 shrines, and they were conceptually organized along forty-two paths. The shrines were represented by a wide range of natural features, such as caves, boulders, springs, and mountaintops, as well as by artificial features, such as houses, fountains, and canals. Each of the shrines required prayers and offerings. Responsibility for maintenance of the shrines along each ceque was divided among the various kin groups of the city. Frequently called “the Cuzco ceque system,” this network of shrines and lines represents the most complex ritual systems yet identified in the ancient New World.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Up to 80% of filtered salt and water is returned back into the circulation in the proximal tubule. Several solutes, such as phosphate, glucose, low-molecular weight proteins, and amino acids are exclusively reabsorbed in this segment, so their appearance in urine is a sign of proximal tubular dysfunction. An entire orchestra of specialized apical and basolateral transporters, as well as paracellular molecules, mediate this reabsorption. Defects in proximal tubular function can be isolated (e.g. isolated renal glycosuria, aminoacidurias, or hypophosphataemic rickets) or generalized. In the latter case it is called the Fanconi–Debre–de Toni syndrome, based on the initial clinical descriptions. However, in clinical practice it is usually referred to as just the ‘renal Fanconi syndrome’. Severity of proximal tubular dysfunction can vary, and may coexist with some degree of loss of glomerular filtration capacity. Causes include a wide range of insults to proximal tubular cells, including a number of genetic conditions, drugs and poisons.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The Jornada Basin LTER is located in the Chihuahuan Desert, the largest in North America. This region of south central New Mexico has a history of nearly 100 years as the basis for scientific research. This work gives a thorough, encompassing review of the tremendous array of observations resulting from experiments conducted in this ecosystem. Beginning with thorough descriptions of the most salient features of the region, the book then reviews a wide range of archived and active data sets on a diversity of biotic and abiotic features. It next presents a syntheses of important topics including livestock grazing and remediation efforts. A concluding chapter provides a synthesis of the principles that have emerged from this body of work, and how these relate to the broader fields of ecology and natural resource management. It concludes with recommendations for future research directions. The insightful views expressed in this volume should guide management of arid landscapes globally. This is the sixth volume in the Long Term Ecological Network Series.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter considers a wide range of virginity tests across cultures. Although virginity testing is commonly imbricated with issues of sexual violence, the specific form of virginity manifest through bleeding and wounds is unique to cultures influenced by Deuteronomy. In literature and legal texts from the non-Christian and non-Jewish Greco-Roman world, there is a total absence of descriptions of physical tests of virginity. The chapter briefly describes other medical exams of virginity in the ancient and medieval West. The chapter then turns to discuss tests based not on the physical traits of a woman, but rather on her ability to survive some ordeal or to perform some particular task. The chapter concludes by examining virginity tests not in terms of their means, but of their effects, asking, Do they encourage, or discourage, male physical violence as a component of sexual activity in general and initial sexual experience in particular?

Résumé :
This book uses everyday objects to tell the story of the Great Patriotic War as never before. The book attends to a diverse array of things to show how a wide array of citizens became soldiers, and how the provisioning of material goods separated soldiers from civilians. The book reveals how the use of everyday items made it possible to wage war. The dazzling range of documents showcases ethnic diversity, women's particular problems at the front, and vivid descriptions of violence and looting. Each chapter features a series of related objects: weapons, uniforms, rations, and even the knick-knacks in a soldier's rucksack. These objects narrate the experience of people at war, illuminating the changes taking place in Soviet society over the course of the most destructive conflict in recorded history. The book argues that spoons, shovels, belts, and watches held as much meaning to the waging of war as guns and tanks. It describes the transformative potential of material things to create a modern culture, citizen, and soldier during World War II.

Baildam, Eileen. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199642489.003.0116.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is defined as arthritis lasting for 6 weeks or more presenting in childhood at any age up to 17 years. Arthritis is diagnosed clinically by the presence of joint pain, stiffness, and swelling with inflammation limiting the range of individual joint movement. There are subtypes that tend to follow distinct courses and with phenotypes that vary widely from a serious systemic inflammatory disorder of systemic JIA to single-joint monoarthritis. The differential diagnosis of JIA is wide and the best chance of long-term remission is where treatment is started as early as possible. However, there is often delay in diagnosis in childhood and there is no single reliable diagnostic test so pattern recognition is fundamental. There are associated disorders such as silent uveitis that must be screened for and managed as part of essential multidisciplinary care. Systemic JIA is complicated by potentially life-threatening macrophage activation syndrome that is often underdiagnosed but where the diagnosis is based on easy clinical tests and where awareness is vital. This chapter covers descriptions of the classification criteria for chronic arthritis in children, clinical presentations and likely course for the various subtypes.
