Résumé :
Bodyweight—the number on the scale—has been constructed as an objective measure of health, and weight loss as synonymous with healthier. Weight has been used as a way of classifying and controlling people, ignoring the embodied, relational, and cultural meanings attached to health and weight. Instead, these subjective experiences are lumped into a numerical category. Our society's obsession with weight is weighing us down and most of us should toss out our scales. Scale stories offer a departure from canonical narratives about physical health and body image by emphasizing emotions and lived experiences instead of bodyweight and numerical categories.

Résumé :
Abstract In this paper, we discuss coin-weighing problems that use a 5-way scale which has five different possible outcomes: MUCH LESS, LESS, EQUAL, MORE, and MUCH MORE. The 5-way scale provides more information than the regular 3-way scale. We study the problem of finding two fake coins from a pile of identically looking coins in a minimal number of weighings using a 5-way scale. We discuss similarities and differences between the 5-way and 3-way scale. We introduce a strategy for a 5-way scale that can find both counterfeit coins among 2k coins in k + 1 weighings, which is better than any strategy for a 3-way scale.

Résumé :
This main objective of this research was to design an energy efficient, hybrid digital weighing scale which can be used in all weight measuring operations. It is basically designed to take weights in kg and display on LCD. The design is justified on the basis of the purpose and importance of weight machine in various aspects. This machine can detect minute magnitude of weight placed over it and can accurately measure in kilograms and displays it over a digital scale. It could be used in homes, industries, shops and retail outlets for determining the weights of the various materials being sold to the customers so that the items may be correctly rated as per the displayed weight over the machine. It converts pressure into appropriate voltage levels. This voltage level is filtered and converted into digital data in the microcontroller which is then displayed on a LCD.

AbstractThis article studies the influence of late Qajar cultures of politics and ethics upon a Sufi theory of knowledge. It argues that Mīrzā Ḥasan Iṣfahānī (known in Sufi circles as Ṣafī ʿAlī Shāh) performed the role of public intellectual in his treatise on knowledge and ethics Mīzān al-maʿrifah (The Scale of Knowledge). I propose that the text’s ethical directives actually serve to dictate the conditions under which a particularly modern subject can claim knowledge. Being someone who knows does not mean being someone who has access to data; it means being someone who can look, and act, as a knower should. Humanity is book’s titular “scale of knowledge,” but, in that text, to truly be human entails the cultivation of virtue and the correct performance of one’s role, as coded in norms of class, profession, and gender, norms conveyed within many of the text’s explanatory analogies.

Résumé :
Analog weighing scales suffer from a lack of precision while reading the output and they can easily be manipulated by any technically biased individual. This paper presents the development of an automated estimating electronic weighing indicator. It aims at developing a means to a framework to evaluate estimated weight in analogue to digital forms, such as to obtain higher precision in estimation and calibration. The circuit consists of a Load Cell, Hx711 Load Cell amplifier, Atmega328 microcontroller, LCD module and a few additional glue components. The 20 kg load cell sends signals of the projected loads to the Hx711 module, which magnifies and sends the corresponding output to the microcontroller. The system uses the 4x3 keyboard to input the unit cost per kg to the electronic scale. The microcontroller automatically adjusts the signals with the load cell amplifier module's guide, thus sending the estimated cost in digital form to the LCD module for display. The circuit was designed, constructed, and tested to show that a computerized electronic weighing system can accurately be calibrated without errors.

Résumé :
AI impacts surrounding human life, such as the economy, health, education, and agricultural production; however, the crop prices in the harvest season are still on manual calculation, which causes doubts about accuracy. In this study, an image-based approach is proposed to help farmers calculate rice prices more accurately. YOLOv5 is used to detect and extract the scales in the images taken from the harvesting of rice crops. Then, various image processing techniques, such as brightness balance, background removal, etc., are compiled to determine the needle position and number on the extracted scale. Lastly, geometric transformations are proposed to calculate the weight. A real dataset of 709 images is used for the experiment. The proposed method achieves good results in terms of mAP@0.5 at 0.995, mAP@[0.5:0.95] at 0.830 for scale detection, and MAE at 3.7 for weight calculation.

Résumé :
The feeding behavior of poultry at a young age is very likely to determine the final growth of the chicken, and can also reflect the feeding status and the health status. It is also of great significance for breeding. This paper describes the development and testing of a real-time automated system and a single passage for monitoring the individual feed intake and body weight of poultry. This system integrates an automatic feeding mechanism, an RFID reading module, a weight scale, a feed scale, and a drop weighting scale. The system uses analog circuits and digital filtering to improve the weighing accuracy, and directly measures the amount of feed falling to the ground using a high-precision weighing scale. Through the sequential opening and closing of a sliding door, group-housed chickens are separated so that the young ones are fed individually. As a result of the experiment, we learned that a young chicken grows at a rate of about 8.88 g/day, and the food conversion rate (FCR) is about 4.4, which proves that this system matches the single passage and can accurately monitor the body weight change and feeding behavior of young chickens.

Résumé :
The weight measurement system is carried out manually using a manual scale. The existing weighing system is still considered inefficient because it takes a long time if it is done repeatedly and there are too many errors in its measurement. To overcome this, an electronic weighing device was designed using the NodeMCU ESP 8266 microcontroller as a controller and a load cell as a sensor. This journal presents the development of electronic weighing indicators for digital measurements. The purpose of this system is to read the measured weight in conventional analog form to digital form, achieving high precision in measurement and calibration. The components used in this research are Load Cell, Load Cell Hx711 amplifier, NodeMCU ESP 8266 microcontroller, and LCD module. In this study, a 4 kg load cell was used. The load cell sends the output signal of the measured mechanical weight to the Hx711 module which amplifies and sends the output to the NodeMCU microcontroller. The microcontroller calibrates the output signal with the help of the load cell amplifier module before sending the converted signal to digital form to the LCD module for display. The developed system has proven that digital electronic weighing systems can be low cost, miniature, discrete, and can take accurate readings without errors

Résumé :
Background Frequent self-weighing is associated with successful weight loss and weight maintenance during and after weight loss interventions. Less is known about self-weighing behaviors and associated weight change in free-living settings. Objective This study aimed to investigate the association between the frequency of self-weighing and changes in body weight in a large international cohort of smart scale users. Methods This was an observational cohort study with 10,000 randomly selected smart scale users who had used the scale for at least 1 year. Longitudinal weight measurement data were analyzed. The association between the frequency of self-weighing and weight change over the follow-up was investigated among normal weight, overweight, and obese users using Pearson’s correlation coefficient and linear models. The association between the frequency of self-weighing and temporal weight change was analyzed using linear mixed effects models. Results The eligible sample consisted of 9768 participants (6515/9768, 66.7% men; mean age 41.5 years; mean BMI 26.8 kg/m2). Of the participants, 4003 (4003/9768, 41.0%), 3748 (3748/9768, 38.4%), and 2017 (2017/9768, 20.6%) were normal weight, overweight, and obese, respectively. During the mean follow-up time of 1085 days, the mean weight change was –0.59 kg, and the mean percentage of days with a self-weigh was 39.98%, which equals 2.8 self-weighs per week. The percentage of self-weighing days correlated inversely with weight change, r=–0.111 (P<.001). Among normal weight, overweight, and obese individuals, the correlations were r=–0.100 (P<.001), r=–0.125 (P<.001), and r=–0.148 (P<.001), respectively. Of all participants, 72.5% (7085/9768) had at least one period of ≥30 days without weight measurements. During the break, weight increased, and weight gains were more pronounced among overweight and obese individuals: 0.58 kg in the normal weight group, 0.93 kg in the overweight group, and 1.37 kg in the obese group (P<.001). Conclusions Frequent self-weighing was associated with favorable weight loss outcomes also in an uncontrolled, free-living setting, regardless of specific weight loss interventions. The beneficial associations of regular self-weighing were more pronounced for overweight or obese individuals.

Résumé :
This study investigates the potential of the limb ballistocardiogram (BCG) for unobtrusive estimation of cardiovascular (CV) parameters. In conjunction with the reference CV parameters (including diastolic, pulse, and systolic pressures, stroke volume, cardiac output, and total peripheral resistance), an upper-limb BCG based on an accelerometer embedded in a wearable armband and a lower-limb BCG based on a strain gauge embedded in a weighing scale were instrumented simultaneously with a finger photoplethysmogram (PPG). To standardize the analysis, the more convenient yet unconventional armband BCG was transformed into the more conventional weighing scale BCG (called the synthetic weighing scale BCG) using a signal processing procedure. The characteristic features were extracted from these BCG and PPG waveforms in the form of wave-to-wave time intervals, wave amplitudes, and wave-to-wave amplitudes. Then, the relationship between the characteristic features associated with (i) the weighing scale BCG-PPG pair and (ii) the synthetic weighing scale BCG-PPG pair versus the CV parameters, was analyzed using the multivariate linear regression analysis. The results indicated that each of the CV parameters of interest may be accurately estimated by a combination of as few as two characteristic features in the upper-limb or lower-limb BCG, and also that the characteristic features recruited for the CV parameters were to a large extent relevant according to the physiological mechanism underlying the BCG.

Résumé :
A common method for determining forage production of rangelands is by clipping and weighing forage from quadrats with predetermined areas. This technique is however time consuming. Other techniques which require less time and labour include amongst others using the disk pasture meter or phytomass derived from the vegetation classification program PHYTOTAB, in conjunction with the Plant Number Scale, which is used to determine vegetation canopy cover. The phytomass determined using PHYTOTAB/Plant Number Scale and the disk pasture meter was compared to the phytomass obtained from the actual clipping and weighing of forage. Tests showed that there were indeed statistically significant differences between the mean phytomass values of the three techniques. Considerable variation was shown in the results of the disk pasture meter readings compared to the other two techniques. The phytomass values obtained using the disk pasture meter were significantly higher than the phytomass determined using both the PHYTOTAB/Plant Number Scale and the clipping and weighing techniques. Results further indicated a significant similarity in the phytomass determined using the PHYTOTAB/Plant Number Scale and the clipping and weighing technique. The results of this pilot study need further investigation.

Résumé :
Bodyweight is an important health and welfare indicator for captive non-human primates (NHPs). Bodyweight can be measured during routine handling procedures, which cause stress. Alternatively, animals can be trained to step onto a scale, but training success varies greatly between individuals. Being able to weigh animals regularly without having to handle or train them is thus desirable for monitoring animal health and welfare. This study investigates the utility, ie the participation, reliability and time investment, of voluntary weighing in captive NHPs living in large social groups. Subjects of the study were 92 rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) housed in four social groups at the Biomedical Primate Research Centre in Rijswijk, The Netherlands. A scale was placed in their home enclosure during several sessions. Individuals were unwilling to step onto an unbaited scale. When likeable food items were used to attract individuals to the scale, 68% of them stepped onto the scale. Age and dominance rank did not affect stepping onto the scale, whereas exploratory tendency and social group did. The level of agreement between bodyweight by voluntary weighing and bodyweight measured during sedation was very high. These results show that the majority of rhesus macaques in social groups can be weighed voluntarily and that voluntary weighing is reliable. When optimising and further developing the method, voluntary weighing can form a valuable tool in the captive management of NHPs.

Résumé :
The purpose of the study was to describe participants’ experience of daily weighing and to explore factors influencing adherence to daily weighing among individuals who were successful in losing weight during a behavioral weight loss intervention. Participants completed a 12-month weight loss intervention study that included daily self-weighing using a Wi-Fi scale. Individuals were eligible to participate regardless of their frequency of self-weighing. The sample ( N = 30) was predominantly female (83.3%) and White (83.3%) with a mean age of 52.9 ± 8.0 years and mean body mass index of 33.8 ± 4.7 kg/m2. Five main themes emerged: reasons for daily weighing (e.g., feel motivated, being in control), reasons for not weighing daily (e.g., interruption of routine), factors that facilitated weighing, recommendations for others about daily weighing, and suggestions for future weight loss programs. Our results identified several positive aspects to daily self-weighing, which can be used to promote adherence to this important weight loss strategy.

Résumé :
The author reports an object of modest appearance but great significance — a small bone beam for weighing precious commodities. Weighing indicates the regulation of quantities for exchange or manufacture and is thus a key agent of social and economic complexity. Well-stratified and dated to the early third millennium BC, this find puts the people of the Levant among the earliest to quantify mass. We are rightly urged to inspect faunal assemblages for similarly subtle modifications of bones.

Résumé :
The objective of this study was to evaluate the technical and economic efficiency of different methods of cattle weighing, and to develop mathematical equations to estimate the breakeven point for the adoption of electronic weighing, i.e., to estimate how many animals are required for the acquisition and use of an electronic scale to be economically viable. The survey was conducted in confined beef cattle, from the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology in the south of Minas Gerais, IFSUL DE MINAS, Muzambinho Campus, from July to December 2014. Two methods of weighing cattle were evaluated: an electronic scale and a tape measure, using a barimetric tape for dairy cattle and a barimetric tape for beef cattle, and a conventional tape measure involving the conversion of centimeters into body weight using a specific table. Thirty-three animals identified with plastic ear tags were weighed using each method. Animals of the Nellore, Senepol, Girolando, and Red-angus breeds, aged 0–1, 1–2, and 2–3 years, were weighed 402 times in total. The time taken to weigh animals with the electronic scale was the lowest, followed by that with the barimetric tape, and that with conventional tape measure with conversion. The electronic scale exhibited the greatest technical efficiency, owing to the lack of error and the lowest time required to weigh animals. However, the costs associated with the use of this equipment were the highest, which depended on the purchasing cost. The mathematical equations developed will help technicians and cattle farmers to rapidly and precisely estimate the minimum number of animals that should compose a production system to ensure economic viability for the adoption of an electronic method to weigh cattle.

Résumé :
Frequent self-weighing has been found to facilitate weight maintenance and the prevention of age-related weight gain. Three experiments were performed to examine the hypothesis that the act of self-weighing inhibits the increase in food intake elicited by food primes. In the first study, participants were provided with a small bowl of chocolate, and consumption of the snack was compared between those who self-weighed and those who did not. In the second study, participants were randomized into three groups: (a) those who watched food advertisements and did not self-weigh, (b) those who watched food advertisements and self-weighed, and (c) those who watched neutral advertisements and did not self-weigh. The third study added a negative control group that watched neutral advertisements and self-weighed. The results revealed that weighing oneself inhibits snack intake, as well as reduces the effects of stimulating food intake when watching a food advertisement. Understanding the mechanism behind this phenomenon means that we can harness the psychological power of stepping on the scale to help combat the prevalence of obesity in the United States.

Résumé :
This paper presents a weighing method for a truck scale based on a neural network (NN) with penalty function (PFNN). Firstly, the truck scale’s prior knowledge, i.e. the positive partial derivatives of the truck scale’s input–output function and the distributions of truck scale’s permissible weighing errors, is used to construct the constraints for optimizing the NN. Then, the penalty function is applied to construct the new NN’s performance index, and the detailed algorithm for training this NN is given. Finally, the method for assigning the value of the penalty factors is also discussed. The comparative experimental results show that the PFNN’s generalization ability is better than that of a data-induced NN (DINN) especially with a lack of training samples (the DINN is a method for training an NN only by using the data samples, not prior knowledge), and the weighing errors of the truck scale with PFNN are far less than those of DINN. In addition, the convergence of the PFNN is faster than that of the DINN.

Résumé :
The axle-group weigh-in-motion system has two functions: static weighing and dynamic weighing. According to the weighing model, the accuracy of dynamic weighing is affected by the static performance. This paper analyses the size of various factors affecting the static performance, such as sensor tilt installation, platform deformation, platform tilt installation, and these errors will lead to sensor swing, bearing head tilt, gravity line of action and sensor axis direction is not consistent, thus affecting the static weighing accuracy. However static calibration is the best way to reduce or even eliminate the above errors. The dynamic truck scale of different manufacturers with or without static calibration is used in the test process. The results show that the dynamic performance index can meet the requirements only after the static calibration is used.

Résumé :
The grain provisioning of the Ottoman capital city Istanbul for the subsistence of its considerable population, including the court, the military, and the religious institutions, was maintained through the same location on an extramural landing square along the wharfs of the Golden Horn from the mid-fifteenth century up until the mid-nineteenth century: the Unkapanı. This article addresses the urban architecture of Istanbul Unkapanı as an illustration of the Ottoman official distribution centers referred to after public weighing scales as kapan. Here, the buildings constituting the Unkapanı—the great magazine as the hall of the public weighing scale for grain, the mosque, and the tradesmen council house ( dîvânhâne or çardak)—are identified and represented on the evidence of the original textual and visual sources, while the urban patterns through the landing square from the wharfs to the city gate are mapped.
