På uppdrag av Järnvägsgruppen på KTH skulle interaktionen mellan kontaktledning och pantograf simuleras och analyseras. Detta för att kunna presentera ett förbättrat konstruktionsförslag på pantografen som skulle leda till en jämnare kontaktkraft vid höghastighetsdrift, 300 km/h. Den dynamiska simuleringen byggde på en befintlig pantograf, WBL 88, som tillverkas av Schunk och används i Sverige på höghastighetståget X2000. Kontaktledningen består av koppar som sprids i naturen när den nöts. Då kopparpartiklar är hälsofarligt har aluminium studerats och jämförts som en potentiell ersättare. Materialjämförelsen har behandlat nötningsvolym, konduktivitet, hållfasthet och miljöaspekter. För att kunna analysera interaktionen mellan kontaktledning och pantograf har den dynamiska simuleringen genomförts i MD Adams/View 2011 där pantografens parametrar varierats för att få en jämnare kontaktkraft. Materialjämförelsen grundar sig på beräkningar som kan relateras till materialens mekaniska egenskaper. Den dynamiska simuleringen gav en jämnare kontaktkraft genom att reducera kontaktskenans vikt samt öka dess fjäderstyvhet och dämpning. Dessa förändringar resulterade i att kontaktskenan lättare kunde följa kontaktledningen utan att tappa kontakten. Materialjämförelsen gav att koppar har för ändamålet och med befintlig utformning av kontaktledningen bättre mekaniska egenskaper än aluminium.
On behalf of the Railway Group at KTH the interaction between a pantograph and the overhead catenary wire was simulated and analyzed. The purpose of this was to present an improved design suggestion of the pantograph that would lead to a more even contact force at high speed operation, 300 km/h. The dynamic simulation was based on an existing pantograph, WBL 88, manufactured by Schunk and is currently used in Sweden on the highspeed train X2000. The catenary is made of copper which is spread in the environment due to wear. Since copper particles are harmful, aluminum has been studied and compared as an alternative material. The material comparison includes wear volume, conductivity, strength and environmental aspects. In order to analyze the interaction between the catenary and the pantograph, dynamic simulations were carried out in MD Adams/View 2011. During the simulations, the parameters of the pantograph have been varied to obtain an improved and more even contact force. The material comparison is based on calculations that can be related to the mechanical properties of the materials. The results of the dynamic simulation showed that by reducing the weight of the contact strip and increasing its spring stiffness and damping, the contact force became less varied and more even. The changes of the parameters lead to that the contact strip could more easily follow the catenary without losing contact. The material comparison showed that copper has better mechanical properties for the specific purpose than aluminum.

Projeto de Graduação apresentado à Universidade Fernando Pessoa como parte dos requisitos para obtenção do grau de Licenciada em Fisioterapia
Objetivo: Estudar o efeito de três técnicas de alongamento: alongamento estático (AE), alongamento estático mais vibração de corpo inteiro (AEV) e alongamento de cadeia estática (CE) na acuidade propriocetiva do joelho, nomeadamente no senso da posição articular (SPA). Metodologia: foi realizado um estudo experimental, randomizado, e controlado, com 41 adultos saudáveis (25 mulheres) distribuídos aleatoriamente por quatro grupos: grupo de AE (5 repetições de 60 segundos); grupo de AEV (5 repetições de 60 segundos, 30 Hz a baixa amplitude); grupo de CE (5 minutos de alongamento); grupo de controlo (GC) (5 minutos de repouso). Realizou-se uma avaliação de SPA do joelho antes e depois de cada protocolo (45º para a flexão e extensão do joelho). Resultados: não foram encontradas alterações significativas (p>0.05) para o SPA do joelho em nenhum dos grupos estudados. Conclusão: a aplicação das três técnicas de alongamento estudadas não altera significativamente a acuidade propriocetiva do joelho.
Objective: to study the effect of three stretching techniques: static stretching (SS), static stretching plus whole-body vibration (SSWBV) and static chain stretching (SC) in the knee proprioceptive acuity, namely in the joint position sense (JPS). Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 41 healthy adults (25 women) randomly assigned to four groups: SS group (5 repetitions of 60 seconds); SSWBV group (5 repetitions of 60 seconds, 30 Hz to low amplitude); SC group (5 minutes stretching); and a control group (GC) (5 minutes rest). A knee JPS evaluation was performed before and after each protocol (45º for knee flexion and extension). Results: no significant changes (P> 0.05) were found for knee JPS in any of the studied groups. Conclusion: the application of the three stretching techniques studied does not significantly alter the knee proprioceptive acuity.

My thesis proceeds from recent critical discussion about the status of the aesthetic object after the decline of high theory of the 1980s and 1990s. The term “singularity”, articulated by critics working with the ideas of Martin Heidegger, has been variously applied to the artwork in the attempt to describe the generative power of art as separable from any historical or political determinants that may shape it. What makes the experience of art “singular”, that is, an experience governed by the artwork itself, without the scaffolding of theory or context? Such a question, I argue, actually demands a return to the first principles of close textual criticism, along with a rigorous approach to genre. The lyric poetry of W. H. Auden provides the ideal material for “singular” criticism. Unpacking the term lyric and redefining it according to Auden’s particular poetics, I consider how Auden inaugurated a new manner of experiencing modern poetry based on the notion, implicit to the conventional understanding of lyric, of vocality. After an account of Heidegger’s influence on contemporary ideas on aesthetics, I consult the work of Theodor Adorno, and later Hannah Arendt, in order to situate Auden’s early work in a European context, opposing the Atlanticism which has governed the vast majority of Auden criticism. Working to restore the power of the first encounter with the poem to historically and philosophically nuanced textual analysis, I present the key works of Auden’s early corpus in a new light.

This thesis is an account of the poet and critic W.H. Auden's relations with Germany and Germans over the course of his life (1907-1973), presented through a selection of influences that have received little critical attention in the corpus of secondary literature to date. While these connections and influences are manifold and sometimes disparate, they can serve as a prism to tell Auden's life-story from a particular, relatively unexplored angle and to illuminate his work. The thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter One discusses Auden’s engagement with German literature before 1928, his reasons for spending nine months in Weimar Berlin 1928-29, and the formative influence of this experience on his life and work. Chapter Two explores Auden's relationship with his 'in-laws', the famous family of Nobel Prize winning author Thomas Mann, and Auden's choice of an international life-style. Chapter Three discusses various other, later German influences on Auden: his visit to Germany with the US Army and its traces in The Age of Anxiety; issues concerning the German translation of this text; his Ford Foundation residence in isolated West Berlin; and his intellectual friendship with Hannah Arendt. Introduction and Conclusion embed these three specific chapters, deliberating the topic more abstractly. A number of appendices bring together a wide range of unpublished sources – and their translations into English, if the original is composed in German. Translations of all German appendix material can be found in the appendix itself.

I will argue in this thesis that W.H. Hudson's fiction and non-fiction share the same symbolic substructure: that of the elusive Paradise. Through attention to the concrete details of the world, in certain moments at least, Hudson apprehends an invisible or supernatural dimension. These moments might appropriately be termed epiphanic. What I shall call 'affirmative' epiphany affirms the earthly by revealing the divine through or within it; it is either directly paradisiac, or assimilable to a vision of the earthly Paradise. In contrast to the 'affirmative' epiphany, there is also 'negative' epiphany which opens up a chasm of terror and dread. Violence, affliction, and human submersion in evil are amongst the things that play into the notion of 'negative' epiphany. I will also show that, in Hudson's fiction, there are indications that evil is written into the network of chance and natural law; so that the 'darkness' or evil disclosed by 'negative' epiphany can be seen as ontologically prior to the actions of the human will. The paradisial endures as a fractured and elusive subject of experience, constantly threatened by contingency, violence, or evil. I will also show how, for Hudson, rationalistic and mechanistic ideologies (especially Darwinism) are an obstacle to consistent belief in the spiritual. In this thesis I will attempt to redress the tendency to concentrate on Hudson first and foremost as a nature writer by giving priority to his fiction, which develops the mythopoeic or symbolic aspects of his vision to a greater extent and, I will argue, for this reason involves a deeper or more profound expression of that vision. In Part One I will be using examples from his non-fiction in my examination of his fundamental concerns; in Part Two I will show how these concerns are developed at a greater depth in his fiction.

La poésie d’Auden (1907-1973) propose des formes inédites invitant le lecteur à repenser l’écriture de la cité. Fasciné par les villes, le poète n’a cessé de sonder divers modèles (Cité juste, Utopie, Cité de Dieu, etc.) pour renouveler sa création sans perdre l’espoir de voir advenir un « lieu bon » (« the Good Place »). Très tôt dans son œuvre, il rapproche la « civitas » de l’œuvre d’art permettant d’élever l’homme au-dessus de la nature. Cependant, ses textes mettent souvent en scène les tribulations de personnages perdus dans un contexte urbain (Bruxelles, Berlin, New York). Par ailleurs, le poète vit s’ébranler tous les repères de la cité avec la Grande Guerre avant d’assister à la montée du nazisme, et ses textes des années 1940 comptent parmi les premiers qui disent – ou tentent de dire – la réalité des camps de concentration dans un monde qui ne fait plus sens. Dans le sillage de The Waste Land d’Eliot, son œuvre soulève question même de la possibilité d’écrire la cité alors que son unité a éclaté en laissant régner les lois du mal. Ainsi, Auden s’inscrit en faux contre tous les grands chantres qui glorifient la ville moderne. Dans la veine de Baudelaire, il dit le monde désenchanté qui l’entoure, mais pour cela, il est prêt à user de tous les artifices de la langue. Auden’s poetry offers unprecedented forms inviting readers to reconsider the poetics of the city. The poet – who was fascinated by cityscapes – kept exploring models (the Just City, Utopia, the City of God, etc.) in order to renew his creation, while aiming at reaching what he called “the Good Place”. Very early in his career, he regarded the “civitas” as analogous to an artwork testifying to man’s superiority over nature. However, his poems often stage the labyrinthine wanderings of characters that have lost themselves somewhere in a city (Brussels, Berlin, New York). Moreover, during the First World War Auden saw all the bearings and landmarks of the City shattered; and in the early 1930s he witnessed the rise of Nazism. Actually, his long poems published in the 1940s count among the first literary works dealing with – or trying to do so – the reality of concentration camps in a world that doesn’t make any sense anymore. In the wake of Eliot’s Waste Land, his work questions the possibility of writing about the City whose unity has been broken while the laws of evil rule over the world.Thus, Auden makes a stand against the bards who glorify the modern city. Following Baudelaire, he describes the disenchanted world in which he lives; but to do so, he is ready to resort to all the artifices of language. Indeed, in times of crisis, only language may serve as a refuge allowing citizens to rebuild a “civitas”. Any other attempt at escaping towards some happy place (on the occasion of public or private parties) will inevitably come to a dead end. Auden was neither a philosopher nor a politician: he was a poet, i.e. a maker designing “secondary worlds” bearing witness to a truth that sometimes reaches the Truth, regained in the silence of the ideal City where nothing divides men, not even words

Wide bandgap devices have gained increasing attention in the market of power electronics for their ability to perform even in harsh environments. The high voltage blocking and high temperature withstanding capabilities make them outperform existing Silicon devices. They are expected to find places in future traction systems, electric vehicles, LED lightning and renewable energy engineering systems. In spite of several other advantages later mentioned in this paper, WBG devices also face a few challenges which need to be addressed before they can be applied in large scale in industries. Electromagnetic interference and new requirements in packaging methods are some of the challenges being faced by WBG devices. After the commercialization of these devices, many experiments are being carried out to understand and validate their abilities and drawbacks. This paper summarizes the experimental results of various applications of mainly Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) power devices and also includes a section explaining the current challenges for their employment and improvements being made to overcome them.

The Wah Wah Springs Tuff and the Wah Wah Springs Intrusive Granodiorite Porphyry(Wah Wah Springs Intrusion) both originated from the Indian Peak caldera complex, which wasa major focus of explosive silicic activity in the middle Cenozoic Great Basin ignimbrite flareup. This caldera formed 30.0 Ma when an estimated 5,900 km3 of crystal-rich dacitic magma erupted to create the Wah Wah Springs Tuff. The Wah Wah Springs Intrusion later intruded the tuff, causing resurgence of the caldera. Field, modal, and geochemical evidence suggest the tuff and intrusion are cogenetic. The mineral assemblages of the two rocks are similar: both include similar proportions of plagioclase, quartz, hornblende, biotite, clinopyroxene, and Fe-Ti oxides, with trace amounts of titanite, apatite, and zircon. Whole rock geochemistry also matches, and both rocks have distinctively high Cr concentrations. Plagioclase, hornblende, and clinopyroxene have similar compositions but biotite and Fe-Ti oxides have been hydrothermally altered in the intrusion. Both hornblende and quartz provide clues to the magmatic evolution of the Wah Wah Springs Intrusion. Hornblende grains are either euhedral, have reaction rims, or are completely replaced by anhydrous minerals. Deterioration of hornblende was caused by decompression as the magma ascended and then stalled and solidified at shallow depths. Two stages of quartz growth are shown in cathodoluminescence (CL) imagery. Quartz first grew then was resorbed during eruption, then grew again at lower pressures indicated by CL-bright quartz rims and groundmass grains. The geochemical and mineralogical similarities, together with the distinctive hornblende and quartz characteristics suggest that after the Wah Wah Springs Tuff erupted, the unerupted mush rose to a shallow level where it crystallized at low pressure to form the Wah Wah Springs Intrusion. This indicates that the both rocks formed in the same chamber, and that tuffs and associated intrusions can be intimately related.

Denna rapport beskriver ett examensarbete för högskoleingenjörsexamen i datorteknik vid Växjö universitet, utfört av Philip Albertson. Vid företaget BSR i Växjö pågår utvecklingen av en ny teknik benämnd Web Based Diagnostics. Målet med projektet är att göra fordonsdiagnostik tillgängligt för bilägare till ett bra pris. Systemet består av tre delar; en modul som sätts i bilen, en server som hanterar informationen och en klient för att kunden ska kunna nå informationen. Min del i detta projekt var att identifiera hur sökta parametrar nås på CAN-bussen i bilar från VAG (Volkswagen Auto Group) och Saab. Företagets representanter var nöjda med resultatet då det utgör en bra grund för vidareutvecklingen av den prototyp för modulen som utvecklats av EDAB (Elektronik Design AB) i Sundsvall.


This abstract describes the bachelor degree thesis in computer technology at Växjö University written by Philip Albertson during the spring term of 2007. At the company BSR in Växjö, Sweden there is a new project under development called WBD – Web based diagnostics. The aim of the project is to make car diagnostics available to ordinary people at a decent cost. The system consists of three parts; a module to plug in the car, a server to handle the information and a client to allow the customers to reach the information about their car. My part in this project was to specify how to reach certain parameters on the CAN-bus in cars from VAG (Volkswagen Auto Group) and Saab. The company was satisfied with the results since they provided a good basis to further develop the module prototype built by the company EDAB (Elektronik Design AB) in Sundsvall, Sweden.

In durability testing of automobiles, load histories collected for laboratory testing are often lengthy in time. Therefore, a fatigue data editing technique is needed to summarise the load history. A fatigue mission synthesis algorithm, called Wavelet Bump Extraction (WBE) preserves the original load cycle sequences has been developed. The basis of WBE is to identify the important features or bumps that cause the majority of the fatigue damage. Bumps are identified in the frequency bands of the load spectrum using an orthogonal wavelet transform. Bumps are then extracted and combined to produce a mission signal with an equivalent fatigue damage as the onginal signal. The WBE validation was performed by analysing the cycle sequence effects in variable amplitude (VA) loadings. The experimental fatigue lives of the shortened VA loadings (Choi 2004) were compared to those predicted using strain-life fatigue damage models, i.e. Coffin-Manson, Morrow, Smith-Watson-Topper and Effective Strain Damage (ESD). The smallest difference was found between the experiment and ESD model, suggesting it is a suitable model for the use with WBE. Comparison between WBE and the time domain fatigue data editing was also conducted in order to observe its effectiveness for accelerated fatigue tests. Moreover, it is useful to evaluate the fatigue life of the original and mission signals by means of fatigue damage preservation in the mission signal. Finally, an analysis of the bump segments sequence effects was performed in order to determine an appropriate mission signal for accelerated fatigue tests. The WBE algorithm showed a substantial compression of the VA loadings could be achieved whilst maintaining fatigue damage and the important load sequences. The ability of the WBE algorithm to shorten fatigue loadings would be expected to prove useful in accelerated fatigue testing of automobiles. Finally, the combination of WBE and ESD provides a novel application of the wavelet-based fatigue data editing.

У другому розділі здійснено аналіз поточного стану агропромислового підприємства на основі кількісних та якісних показників його функціонування. А також вплив внутрішнього та зовнішнього середовища, У третьому розділі на основі досліджених науково-теоретичних підходів до формування проекту розвитку підприємства та здійсненого аналізу поточного стану агропромислового підприємства, його внутрішнього та зовнішнього середовища розроблено бізнес-план проекту компанії, за допомогою якого підприємство знизить рівень залежності сезонної дохідності Спираючись на отримані результати, сформовано комплекс практичних пропозицій щодо розробки та реалізації проекту розвитку досліджуваного підприємства.
В работе рассмотрены теоретические и методические основы разработки проекта предприятия агропромышленной отрасли. Рассмотрены вопросы формирования проекта предприятия как одного из существенных компонентов усовершенствования экономической деятельности предприятия и реализации в современных условиях хозяйствования. На основе аналитических данных о деятельности исследуемого предприятия предложено открытие животного комплекса как стратегию его развития. В первой главе представлены теоретические основы и научные подходы проекта для развития предприятия на основе учета факторов, влияющих на перспективы развития компании. Во второй главе проведен анализ текущего состояния агропромышленного предприятия на основе количественных и качественных показателей его функционирования. А также влияние внутренней и внешней среды, В третьем разделе на основе исследованных научно-теоретических подходов к формированию проекта развития предприятия и анализа текущего состояния агропромышленного предприятия, его внутренней и внешней среды разработан бизнес-план проекта компании, с помощью которого предприятие снизит уровень зависимости сезонной доходности. Опираясь на полученные результаты, сформирован комплекс практических предложений по разработке и реализации проекта развития изучаемого предприятия.
The theoretical and methodical bases concerning development of the project of the enterprise of agro-industrial branch are considered in the work. The issue of forming the project of the enterprise as one of the essential components of improvement of economic activity of the enterprise and realization in modern conditions of managing is considered. On the basis of analytical data on the activities of the studied enterprise, the opening of the animal complex as a strategy for its development is proposed. The first section presents the theoretical foundations and scientific approaches of the project for enterprise development based on factors that affect the prospects of the company. The second section analyzes the current state of the agro-industrial enterprise on the basis of quantitative and qualitative indicators of its operation. As well as the impact of internal and external environment, In the third section, based on the researched scientific and theoretical approaches to the formation of the enterprise development project and the analysis of the current state of the agro-industrial enterprise, its internal and external environment, the company's business plan is developed. Based on the obtained results, a set of practical proposals for the development and implementation of the project of development of the researched enterprise has been formed.

This thesis investigates the roles played by etymology in the work of three late modernist poet-critics: W. H. Auden, J. H. Prynne, and Paul Muldoon. The relationship between poetry and etymology has a long history, but the advent of modern linguistics at the beginning of the twentieth century brought about a change in this relationship. Structuralism developed a more comprehensive condemnation of the etymological fallacy – the view that historical forms and meanings are relevant to current ones - that both isolated etymology as an abstract field of study and undermined its scientific validity. One reaction to this state of affairs has been to re-evaluate etymological discourse itself as poetic or rhetorical. But it is the tension created by what Paula Blank has called 'the quasi-disciplinarity of etymological desire' that motivates Auden, Prynne, and Muldoon's concerns with linguistic historicity. Etymological poetry encourages, even necessitates, very close reading. While this thesis accepts the challenge to read arguably too closely, it also examines the limits of such an approach and its implications for the relationship between poetry and criticism. The first three chapters consider how Auden, Prynne, and Muldoon invoke etymologies in their own criticism, and how etymology affects the ways their poetry may be said to communicate. The second three develop these analyses into new interpretations of commonly debated aspects of their work: Auden's landscape poetry, Prynne's lyricism, and Muldoon's onomastics. It is argued that the fact of obsolescence is key to the etymological poetic; obsolete forms and meanings make poetry difficult, but in the process they intimate that a truer way of representing the world may be (re)discovered. All three poet-critics confront and absorb the consequences of etymological obscurity. Their preoccupation with the history of words is self-consciously and unavoidably pedantic, and it is this pedantry that plays the most significant role in the poetic power they accord to etymology.

It focuses on a drama in particular, The Ascent of F6, comparing the textual aspect with the performance outcome, examining the original script used for the premiére on February 26, 1937 and also the response of the critic. The dissertation deepens the connection between poetry and drama considering the conceptual coherence and the unity of images that mark the thought of Auden in the early 30s. Auden's most important dramas are examined following a chronological perspective, from the first draft of Paid on Both Sides, in 1928, to the first success staged by the Group Theatre of London, The Dog Beneath the Skin, 1935, and eventually the last achievement in 1937 written with Christopher Isherwood, The Ascent of F6, which marked the progressive abandonment of the dramatic genre by Auden. The thesis gives an extensive outlook which considers not just the textual aspects of the play, investigating thus the connections with the classic tragedy, but also underlines the various intertextual references and the efficacy of the text in its performing aspects.

The thesis "Wh-exclamatives in Catalan" is a research that intends to shed light on the characterization of exclamatives, a type of clause that has not been paid as much attention as other types of clause such as interrogatives or declaratives. This is a theoretical study that falls within the framework of generative grammar. As such, it highlights the main problems that the previous literature has noted, it considers new puzzles that stem from the data from Catalan, it provides an explanatory analysis for most of them, and it presents relevant lines for future research.
My working hypothesis is that exclamatives are a kind of degree construction that resembles comparative clauses and result clause constructions. However, exclamatives and the other degree constructions differ in at least one relevant property: exclamatives do not make the same discourse contribution as declaratives.
This works limits its scope to two instances of wh-exclamatives in Catalan, namely exclamatives whose wh-word is the degree operator que ('how') (as in (1)) and exclamatives introduced by the wh-word quin ('what'), which is a determiner (cf. (2)).

(1) Que alt que és en Pau! / 'How tall Pau is!'

(2) Quin pastís tan bo que ha preparat en Ferran! / 'What a nice cake Ferran made!'

In (1), the wh-phrase que alt is a degree phrase which moves towards the left periphery of the clause, whereas in (2), the wh-phrase quin pastís tan bo is a determiner phrase. Even if the moved phrases have different heads, they both contain a degree phrase. I propose that que in (1) is the wh-counterpart of tan ('so') in (2). The inclusion of [+wh] in its feature makeup causes the movement of the phrase headed by que to the clause periphery.
The facts that make exclamatives an attractive object of study are numerous and concern their syntax, their semantics and their pragmatics. From a syntactic viewpoint it is interesting to ask oneself why exclamatives allow the presence of the complementizer que ('that') between the wh-phrase and the verb and what is the reason why a wh-word such as qui ('who') cannot introduce an exclamative. With regard to semantics, there is a need to define and formalize the essence of an exclamative: is it surprise? Unexpectedness? Extreme degree? And with respect to pragmatics, we need to explain the reason why an exclamative does not make a good answer to a question (i.e., why it cannot be used assertorically).
The syntactic analysis contains two basic ideas. On the one hand, I assume that the wh-phrase lands in Spec,C, which makes sense if we understand that the complementizer que occupies Cº. On the other hand, I propose that it is required that the wh-phrase include a degree phrase introduced by tan or que.
Semantically, I analyze tan as a degree operator that establishes a relation between two degrees, a reference degree and a standard degree. The reference degree is the degree of ADJ-ness of the individual that is the argument of the gradable adjective interpreted as a measure function of type . The standard degree is taken from context and it is high.
Finally, from the point of view of pragmatics, I propose that an exclamative contains two kinds of meaning: a verbally expressed meaning (the descriptive content of the clause) and the meaning that is contributed to discourse. The descriptive meaning is taken for granted by the speaker, who treats it as a fact. What he/she wants to contribute to discourse is information that is not verbally encoded: his/her attitude towards a degree.

La tesi "Wh-exclamatives in Catalan" ('Les exclamatives-qu en català') es proposa caracteritzar les oracions exclamatives-"qu" (i.e., aquelles que estan introduïdes per un mot-"qu" com "quin" o "que") des del punt de vista de la seva sintaxi, semàntica i pragmàtica. Aquest és un estudi emmarcat en la gramàtica generativa i, com a tal, enfoca l'objecte d'estudi a partir dels contrastos que s'han posat de relleu en la bibliografia prèvia, planteja nous problemes derivats de les dades del català, proposa una hipòtesi i mira de comprovar si la hipòtesi permet explicar les dades.
Els dos tipus d'oració amb què he treballat són els següents:
(1) Que alt que és en Pau!
(2) Quin pastís tan bo que ha preparat en Ferran!
A (1) "Que alt" és un sintagma de grau que s'ha traslladat a la perifèria oracional, mentre que a (2) tot el sintagma determinant "Quin pastís tan bo" és el que s'ha traslladat. Però, crucialment, (2) també conté un sintagma de grau (i.e., "tan bo").
La hipòtesi de treball és que les oracions exclamatives-qu no s'han d'explicar des de la semàntica de les preguntes com s'ha fet fins al moment, sinó que se les ha de considerar construccions de grau com les comparatives o les oracions consecutives , això sí, amb una particularitat: no tenen la mateixa contribució al discurs que una oració comparativa o consecutiva, ja que no són oracions declaratives. Més concretament, la tesi vol demostrar que tota exclamativa-"qu" ha de contenir un sintagma de grau (ja sigui de forma manifesta o inferit del context) que està encapçalat per un operador de grau ("tan" o "que"), i que estableix una relació entre un grau de referència i un grau estàndard recuperat del context i que sempre és considerat alt. El que diferencia les exclamatives de les declaratives és que mentre que aquestes funcionen generalment com a asseveracions, un parlant que profereix una exclamativa no té la intenció d'introduir el contingut descriptiu de l'exclamativa com a informació nova, sinó que vol expressar la seva actitud emotiva envers un grau alt. Per això proposo que el contingut descriptiu d'una exclamativa és un fet i no una proposició, perquè el parlant no el fa servir per introduir informació nova, sinó que el considera la causa de la seva actitud.

This thesis puts forward a theory that attempts to unify optional wh-movement within the Minimalist framework. Optionality is generally problematic for a theory ofMinimalist syntax: movement, when motivated, must occur. This thesis argues that having a wh-movement language does not strictly entail that wh-phrases appear fronted in surface syntax. Essentially, the formal optionality of wh-movement is predicted to fall out via the multiple satisfaction of the EPP. Wh-movement languages all possess equally economical options to leave wh-phrases in-situ without a need to postulate an optional EPP feature or multiple grammars. There are three core pillars to the theory proposed. First, the QuP hypothesis proposes that universally, a question particle Qu, which is seen to be a variable over choice functions, takes a wh-phrase as its complement to form a larger constituent. Second, it is proposed that the principle driving force of optional movement lies in the Featural Subset Hypothesis. The FSH proposes that the EPP is not parasitic on Agree; rather, the EPP along with other features can be arranged into a subset configuration. Depending on the configuration, three types of equally economical movement can result: spec-raising, head movement, or phrasal movement. The third pillar of the theory is the notion of Q-migration, as first developed in Hagstrom (1998). The concept of Q-migration is heavily adapted, redeveloped and formalised, appealing to a combination of m-merger (Matushansky 2006), reprojective movement (Donati 2006) and a new proposed principle of L(abel)-absorption, which allows the transformation of specifiers into adjuncts. The main purpose of Q-migration is to obviate island barriers in order to allow elements within the island, in this case Qu, to escape, yielding the correct interpretation of wh-in-situ elements within islands. The theory is then applied to a variety of languages and especially applied in accounting for the optional wh-movement facts in Singapore English, a contact language with heavy Chinese substrate influence, for which new and original data will be presented.

Résumé : Cette recherche a pour objectif d'analyser la réception des représentations des femmes dans deux campagnes publicitaires de produits de toilette, l'Initiative de vraie beauté de Dove et la Bom Chicka Wah Wah de Axe. Alors que la première cherche à construire un modèle de beauté accessible, la seconde reproduit le modèle dominant de la femme idéale. Cette contradiction n'a rien d'étonnant, si ce n'est que les marques appartiennent toutes deux à la multinationale Unilever. Ceci a soulevé une importante controverse. Ce mémoire s'appuie sur différentes théories en communication et en études féministes. Je traite notamment de la socialisation, des rôles concurrentiels des médias et de la mère dans ce processus, de la construction du genre, des représentations des femmes dans les médias et la publicité, ainsi que de la question des publics et de la réception selon l'approche du sens construit. Cette étude de la réception se penche sur un public en particulier, les mères d'adolescentes : celles-ci sont le public cible de Dove et leurs filles sont quotidiennement exposées aux idéaux de beauté féminine, présentés, entre autres, par Axe. Trois groupes de discussion ont été menés auprès de vingt-trois participantes dans différentes villes du Québec. Les participantes ont été invitées à donner leur opinion à propos des publicités diffusées sur les sites Web des campagnes de Dove et Axe et à échanger sur la publicité, les standards de beauté et les représentations des femmes dans les médias. Il se dégage trois grands points de l'analyse des résultats. D'abord, les mères d'adolescentes interviewées tendent à négocier les messages publicitaires. Il est certain qu'elles intègrent directement certains éléments de sens, mais elles en rejettent d'autres et se montrent critiques. Ensuite, elles semblent jouer un rôle-clé dans la socialisation, et ce, tant dans l'apprentissage et la reproduction des normes de la féminité que dans le développement d'un sens critique par rapport à ces normes. Finalement, elles adoptent des points de vue féministes par rapport au corps, à la mode et aux pratiques de beauté et par rapport aux représentations des femmes dans les médias.||Abstract : This research examines the reception of women's representations in two advertising campaigns for beauty products, Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty and Axe's Bom Chicka Wah Wah. While the first seeks to construct a more democratic beauty standard, the second reproduces the dominant standard of the ideal woman. Such contradiction would by no means be surprising if it was not that both brands belong to Unilever, a multinational corporation. Such contradiction therefore created an important controversy.This master's thesis is based on different theories in communication and feminist studies. It deals with socialization, competing roles of media and mothers in this process, gender construction, women's representations in media and advertising, as well as with the issues of publics and reception, as discussed by the constructed meaning approach.This reception study looks into a particular public, that is mothers of teenage girls: these women are Dove's target and their daughters are regularly exposed to feminine beauty ideals, represented, among others, by Axe. Three focus groups were held with 23 participants in different cities of Québec. Participants were invited to share their opinions on the ads broadcasted on the websites of Dove's Real Beauty Campaign and Axe's Born Chicka Wah Wah, and to exchange ideas and views on advertising, beauty standards and women's representations in media. Three main points can be drawn from the results and their analysis. First, the mothers of teenage girls interviewed tend to negotiate the messages in advertisings. It is certain that they directly integrate some elements of meaning, but they also reject others and display great critical faculty. Second, it seems they play a key-role in socialization, both in the initiation to and the reproduction of norms of feminity and in the acquisition and development of critical faculty towards these norms. Third, they take up feminist positions and views on the body, fashion and beauty practices, as well as women's representations in media.

Because Web-based Learning (WBL) is a relatively new educational environment, limited research has been undertaken in exploring the factors that affect learners and instructors in WBL. (Trentin, 2001; Muirhead, 2001; Sloffer, Dueber & Duffy, 1999; Gabriel, 1999; Land & Hannafin, 1997; Mayer, 1997; Newman, Webb & Cochrane, 1996). How WBL learners co-construct knowledge through collaboration with each other under the guidance of an instructor has not been examined in-depth. Although there is literature that examines general factors affecting learners in the WBL environment, there is little research that reveals why these factors are significant to the process of constructing learning, or how they impact learners' ability to collaborate in a WBL environment (Trentin, 2001; Carstens & Worsfold, 2000; Sloffer, Dueber & Duffy, 1999; Gabriel, 1999; Edelson, Pia, & Gomez, 1996; Silva & Breuleux, 1994). This qualitative single case study was comprised of a WBL course delivered to a group of public sector employees in various locations around the world, and focused on their WBL experiences. An instructor, a course administrator, a Website manager, and eight learners volunteered to participate in the case study. Data from the study were analyzed in order to provide in-depth descriptions of factors affecting collaboration among learners in a course delivered solely through WBL. This study revealed factors that primarily prevented learners from collaborating among themselves as they constructed their learning in a Web-based environment. Some factors that could have facilitated collaboration were evident; however, the barriers to it were insurmountable in this case. The findings of this study have illuminated findings of previous studies, and contributed new understandings. Recommendations for WBL processes and components will assist WBL instructors and designers to facilitate collaboration and knowledge co-construction among learners.

Atualmente, a maioria dos treinamentos são executados na forma presencial. Apesar da grande oferta e variedade, esses treinamentos apresentam, em muitos casos, deficiências no processo de ensino-aprendizagem. Muitas soluções têm surgido na tentativa de superar ou aliviar as principais barreiras para a realização de treinamento de interesse pessoal ou empresarial. Tais barreiras decorrem especialmente da falta de eficiência, de elevados custos diretos ou indiretos e de escassez de tempo. Apresenta-se como objetivo geral deste trabalho propor como solução para esses problemas a informatização do treinamento, sob a forma de multimídia, aliada com os potenciais recursos da Internet, culminando, entre as possibilidades pesquisadas, um modelo de Treinamento Via Web (WBT). Entre os objetivos específicos do trabalho, destacam-se: apresentar o WBT como alternativa econômica para substituição dos treinamentos presenciais, permitindo que qualquer aluno aprenda, em qualquer lugar, em qualquer tempo, qualquer tema de seu interesse; destacar a flexibilidade na execução do curso em um ambiente atrativo, segundo o ritmo imposto pelo aluno dentro de premissas construtivistas; propor uma alternativa que minimiza o problema da largura de banda no WBT; mostrar que a construção modular de um WBT facilita a administração e atualização dos cursos. Após considerar-se o perfil do usuário que se deseja atender, opta-se por um modelo supervisionado de WBT de rápida implementação, para uma quantidade não limitada de alunos, utilizando ferramentas adequadas para concentrar o treinamento na condução pelo próprio aluno. Um protótipo parcial desse modelo é implementado e aplicado para uma amostra de pessoas de variadas idades, graus de instrução e atividades profissionais, dentro do território brasileiro. Avaliados os resultados, comprova-se que os pontos fracos de um treinamento presencial ficam bastante atenuados no WBT, que se destaca como uma forma eficaz de aprendizado. O impacto positivo revelado neste modelo confirma as expectativas do crescimento exponencial deste mercado, justificando a continuidade deste trabalho.

The purpose of this study is to provide empirical data that reports the association between students? personality type preferences as understood by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality profile and their achievement and perception of satisfaction in web-based learning environments. Data were collected from two graduate level courses offered entirely online using the WebCT learning management system during one semester. The data of interest were extracted from the course information; MBTI profile (learning style), numeric end of course grade (performance), course evaluation (used for satisfaction indicator). The demographic subject profile information such as gender, ethnicity, and age were extracted from the MBTI profile database collection. Data analysis and generation were done using SAS software. For the given sample, the data show the MBTI scale preference for Thinking-Feeling make a statistically significant difference in the satisfaction ratings of Learner-to-Learner and Learner-to-Content interactions within Web-based instructed (WBI) courses. Students with MBTI preference for Feeling rated their satisfaction with Learner-to-Learner and Learner-to-Content interactions in the WBI courses higher than those with Thinking preference. Satisfaction with Learner-to-Instructor interaction was not related to MBTI preference, but was statistically significantly different by age range. MBTI preference, age and gender did not make a difference in achievement as measured by end of course grade in the WBI courses. These findings suggests Web-based instruction should ensure effective methods and strategies are used to accommodate student learning preference with regard to course interactions.

This thesis explores cross-cultural encounters between China and three British left-wing writers – Harold Laski, W. H. Auden and Joseph Needham. The motivations underlying this study are the diversity and intensiveness of the British left’s engagements with China’s search for modernization in the twentieth century. Laski, Auden and Needham were all prominent British left-wing intellectuals, and each exerted a remarkable influence on the Chinese pursuit of modern democracy, literature, and science, the three important pillars of China’s modernization since the May Fourth period. Grouping them together, the thesis makes a contribution to the study of the international impacts of the British left in general and the study of Sino-British cultural exchanges in particular. The conventional view emphasizes Western influences on China in modern times as unilateral knowledge transplantation from the advanced West to the backward East, thus the important role of the Chinese intelligentsia as cultural agency is often marginalized. This thesis, by contrast, interprets the British left’s encounters with China as a process of interactive, dynamic, even dialectical transformation, from which both sides derived intellectual benefits. It not only demonstrates the initiative taken by the Chinese intellectuals in translating, interpreting, and applying Western knowledge to address their own particular problems, but also attempts to show the inspirations the British left-wing writers took from China in their own humanitarian struggle for a more liberal, equitable and peaceful world. The thesis is organized in chronological order with the earliest encounter discussed first. Chapter One examines Laski’s impact on Chinese liberals’ imagination and construction of an equitable and democratic China. It shows that the Chinese applications of Laski’s political theory to their local concerns were highly selective, and it was difficult for Chinese liberals to fully embrace Laski’s thought because of the inner conflict between the liberal and Marxist aspects of Laski. Chapter Two discusses Auden and Isherwood’s co-authored book Journey to a War (1939) in the critical tradition of travel writing. It argues that their ironic self-consciousness of the travel book genre itself makes the book unique in Western representations of China, but exposes them to the critical charge of immature frivolity. It also shows that Auden worked towards a symbolic solution for the conflicting demands of the public and private worlds by interpreting the China war into a global human history in his sonnets. Chapter Three focuses on the reception of Auden’s poetry in China. Exposing the limitations of the prevailing formalist-aesthetic approach, it unearths Zhu Weiji’s Marxist interpretation of Auden and proposes an ideological criticism to re-examine Auden’s influences on Chinese modernist poets. Chapter Four explores Needham’s conversion to Chinese culture and his influences on China’s understanding of its own science. By tracing various Chinese responses to the Needham Question, it argues that although Needham’s research boosted the confidence of Chinese in their scientific tradition, the Chinese hunger for modern science is closely associated with nationalism, which is contradictory to the socialist universalism that behind Needham’s intellectual project.

Baseado, por exemplo, na localização geográfica de um determinado host na Internet, podese oferecer serviços especializados, como: a) páginas web com preferências regionais (e.g. usuários online podem receber propagandas direcionadas ou ter a linguagem para apresentação de conteúdo selecionada automaticamente); b) controle de disponibilidade de dados, de acordo com a localização do usuário (e.g. pode-se restringir o acesso a determinados dados através de políticas regionais e autorização de transações a partir de localidades pré-estabelecidas), c) estudo e análise de tráfego geolocalizado para entender quem se comunica com quem no nível de usuários, regiões e países e identificação de anomalias de roteamento. Os aspectos comuns destas aplicações são a sua dependência em relação a estratégias, denominadas geolocalização. Contudo, alguns destes mecanismos apresentam uma baixa acurácia ou uma estimativa de localização geográfica não-aceitável para determinadas aplicações. Portanto, torna-se de grande importância estudos que melhorem a precisão, bem como a completude das estratégias utilizadas para inferir a geolocalização de hosts na Internet. Este trabalho tem como principais objetivos o estudo sobre as estratégias de geolocalização existentes; a proposta de uma estratégia que melhore a precisão das inferências de localização geográfica de hosts na Internet e a completude dos resultados; e o estudo de tráfego geolocalizado de uma base de dados da rede acadêmica do Estado de Pernambuco. A estratégia desenvolvida, denominada WBG (Whois Based Geolocation), é baseada em buscas whois online e possui uma heurística baseada na ferramenta traceroute

This thesis is designed to study various Moroccan Arabic (MA) wh-constructions both within the Government and Binding (GB) framework and the Minimalist Program (MP). It is, specifically, confined to relative clause formation, left dislocation (topicalization) and questions. A detailed analysis of relative clause formation is provided. It is particularly argued that the resumptive pronoun insertion in relatives is a last resort strategy which is used only where movement fails. It is also shown that resumptive pronouns function as variables which are bound by null operators in LF. In the course of this analysis, the issues of the Binding Theory and of the A$\sp\prime$-disjointness requirement with respect to resumptive pronouns are also discussed. Subsequently, an examination of yes-no questions is given. Additionally, Cheng's (1991) generalization that the availability of question particles correlates with the lack of syntactic wh-movement is investigated in detail. Finally, the recent minimalist version (Chomsky 1995) is applied to the issue of optionality in word orders and to certain wh-constructions. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
