Résumé :
This study was conducted to determine the effect of heating methods (conventional and microwave), heating temperatures, and refrigerated storage on the flavor deterioration in precooked chicken parts. Chicken breasts and legs were evaluated by chemical analyses and sensory evaluation. Data was analyzed by Fisher's least significant difference (LSD) and Duncan's test. Results of the thiobarbituric acid test (TBA) indicated that heating temperature, regardless of heating method had a significant influence on oxidative deterioration. When the legs were heated for a longer time at a lower temperature, the TBA values significantly increased indicating heightened warmed-over flavor (WOF). Two-day refrigerated storage had no measurable influence on the TBA numbers. The legs generally had a higher degree of lipid oxidation reflected by higher TBA values. Heating method and 2-day refrigerated storage did not have a significant effect on the nonheme iron content of breasts or legs. The effects of heating temperature were inconsistent for the legs and breasts which was attributed to the different initial iron content of the legs, and the release of nonheme iron during the initial processing of the legs. The nonheme iron values of the legs were greater relative to the breasts. Heating and storage in general increased the area of peak 3 in legs, but had no effect on the breasts. A significant increase in the hexanal (peak 8) content of legs occurred upon 2-day storage, but not for breasts. Peak 7 significantly decreased when the breasts were heated, stored, and reheated. This was not the case for the legs. Sensory panelists could not differentiate between heating methods or temperatures for either part.

Résumé :
Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a serious disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and other small grains; disease severity is affected by temperature and rainfall. This research comprised three studies: an artificially warmed experiment during 2016-2017, a morphology study and an FHB resistance screening study in 2015-2016, using approximately 250 wheat cultivars and breeding lines from programs in the eastern US. The location was the University of Kentucky Spindletop Research Farm in Lexington, KY. Higher levels of Fusarium damaged kernels and the toxin deoxynivalenol (DON) were observed in the warmed treatment compared to the control, and plant development was accelerated. In the FHB resistance screen, significant (p < 0.05) genotype differences for all traits were observed. A GWAS identified 16 SNPs associated with resistance and susceptibility, ranging from -2.14 to 4.01%. Three DON-associated SNPs reduced toxin levels by 3.2, 2.1, and 1.5 ppm. In the morphology study, negative correlations were observed among morphological and disease traits. Small effect SNPs were identified for all morphological traits, which might be useful in genomic selection; traits like spike length, spikelet number and inclination could be used in phenotyping. Response to warming indicates that existing resistance sources may be less effective in a warming climate.

Résumé :
AbstractIn the early Holocene period, extensive tracts of coastal land were submerged as the climate warmed and meltwaters flooded into the oceans. As the Irish Sea expanded, coastlines altered and large intertidal zones were created as tracts of low-lying land at the tidal margins were gradually submerged. In these areas, reed swamp and saltmarsh formed which, too, were inundated for varying periods of time. However, in the calmer warmer weather of the late spring and summer, birds and mammals were drawn on to the mudflats where they could feed on molluscs, or new reed and sedge shoots, wallow in the cooling mud, drink the brackish water or, for some predators, hunt. The behavioural tendencies of some species are revealed by their footprints which show their engagement within this environment – some breeds moved on to the marshes while others moved away. The humans who shared this landscape understood the opportunities offered by these predictable behaviours. Their trails run along and across those left by many species, leaving a visible network of human and animal activity preserved in the hardened mud. These will be described through an examination of the footprints recorded in three contexts which formed the stratigraphy of a Mesolithic bed at Formby Point in North West England. The persistent return to the mudflats by generations of people reflects an embodied knowledge of this coastal landscape, learnt in childhood and practiced in adulthood. The ability to modify movements in the landscape, to respond to the daily tides, the changing seasons and a fluctuating environment, all suggest a spatial-temporal relationship which not only encompassed a dynamic environment but also the other life that dwelt within it.

The ability to easily manipulate body temperature would impact a number of fields. While perfusion with externally cooled or warmed blood is effective due to the thermoregulatory power of the circulatory system and its diffuse microcirculation, this process is particularly invasive. Noninvasive techniques to date mostly utilize body surface applications that rely on relatively inferior conduction heat transfer.

Résumé :
Part accuracy and quality in rapid prototyping process using solid powder in the part cake are typically dependent upon thermal system and powder properties. The part cake is a rectangular mild steel cylinder with movable part plate piston. For maximum thermal stress reduction in the part-building process, about 1.27 cm or 2.54 cm initial solid powder was uniformly laid in the part cake. The powder was then warmed to a certain temperature before sintering. The amount of moisture present in the solid powder will have significant impact on the required warm-up time. In the moisture vaporization process, solid powder temperature in the computational cell will remain at 100°C until the moisture mass fraction reaches zero. The warm-up time of the cell will increase as the moisture content of the powder increases. Reference data has yet to be published on warm-up times, therefore machine operators will find variances in warm-up times. To better predict the warm-up time for the solid powder heating process with moisture vaporization in the warm-up stage of the part cake, a vaporization code model was developed that can also simulate the heating process with vaporization for any solid particle mixed with any liquid agent.

Résumé :
In order to fulfill the LEV/ULEV exhaust emission standards, it is necessary to have a precise control of air fuel ratio under transient conditions especially during cold start and warm up periods. The objective in this study was to estimate parameters of a fuel delivery model and use them to provide a correct fuel injection compensation strategy. In this study, fuel transfer characteristics of intake port of a typical fuel-injected spark ignition engine have been determined for engine warm-up conditions following cold starts at temperature down to −15°C and extending to fully-warmed-up conditions, using a method based upon perturbing fuel injection rate and recording AFR (Air Fuel Ratio) response. Since there was no cold chamber available to perform tests in cold start conditions, a new method was utilized to simulate cold start conditions. This method can be used on any PFI engine with closed valve injection strategy. Following the estimation of fuel transfer model parameters, the variation of fuel film deposit factor (X), fuel film evaporation time constant (τf) and transport delay to oxygen sensor (ΔT) parameters over a range of temperatures, engine speeds and intake manifold pressures have been evaluated, providing a good insight to define transient fuel compensation requirements for cold start and warm up conditions.

Résumé :
Shape memory polymers (SMPs) have garnered significant attention in recent years for their potential to return to a “memorized” state when warmed above their glass transition temperature Tg. However, they also have potential in morphing aircraft applications because of their significant modulus change above and below Tg. Much less energy is required to deform this material when in its soft state, but when the material returns to the hard state, it is able to support significant loads. In the proposed effort, SMP is experimentally considered as a candidate material for morphing aircraft applications where the material’s ability to support out of plane loads above and below the Tg is of primary importance. The SMP of study in the work is Veriflex®.

Résumé :
This paper presents and discusses experimental data obtained during test simulating the test cycle ECE-15 for a relatively simple method for the reduction of pollutant emissions during a cold start. During a cold start the volume of the exhaust gases is considerably smaller than the ones under full load. Therefore, only a small portion of the catalyst active surface is used to process the gases at the cold start phase. After the light-off at the initial surface the exhaust gases pass from the total catalytic surface which is already pre-heated from the first phase. The experimental results presented here indicate that there is a reduction of the pollutant emissions during the cold start of an engine. The developed system uses the 20% of the catalyst active surface during start-up and the rest of the catalyst surface after this phase, controlled by a proper automation system. At the cold start phase the system focusing the gas flow towards the center core of the monolith, so there is a quicker warm-up of the catalyst and a faster initiation of catalysis in this area. So when the remaining ceramic body of the catalytic converter is used, it is already warmed and the catalysis starts almost immediately.

Résumé :
In this paper, design and exergy method optimization of a 5kW power output PEFC fuel cell with cogeneration application has been investigated. It is assumed that cooling water is passed through fuel cell cooling channel, warmed up and supplied for space heating application. The performance of the proposed system has been optimized by the second law based exergy analysis. Results show for the maximum system efficiency and minimum entropy generation, fuel cell temperature and voltage should be as high as possible in the range of application. Also, the fuel cell pressure and stoichiometric air fuel ratio should be as low as possible in the range of application. The results of this investigation are valid for full load of condition of 5 KW. So, the results are not applicable for any other power level.

Résumé :
This research aims to develop temperature control system for a cabinet which is set up in outfield and has heat source inside. Underground heat source was utilized for this system with steel pipes embedded into underground and water as working fluid. The cabinet was cooled the in summer season and warmed in winter season. The experimental results show that this system can favorably control the inside air temperature of the cabinet in summer and winter season with relatively high COP. The results of numerical simulation using only meteorological data show good agreements with experimental data in summer and winter season. The results of numerical simulation where some parameters such as pipe distance, diameter, and length were changed show the effect of these parameters on performance of the system.

Résumé :
The 6 th Assessment Report cycle of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (AR6) comes at a precipitous moment in history. Human influence has warmed the planet, and widespread and rapid impacts are occurring to natural and human systems in all regions of the world. In response, immediate action is needed if there is to be any hope of limiting global warming to 1.5°C or well below 2°C below pre-industrial levels, as well as preparing for and adapting to current and future risks. The transformations needed in response to climate change will require decisive action in cities and urban areas. Cities and urban areas are a major source and driver of emissions; they are also crucial sites for system transitions in the near term and transformations over longer time frames
