The COVID-19 pandemic was not a great ‘equaliser’, but rather an event whose impact intersected with pre-existing inequalities affecting different people, places, and geographic scales. Nowhere is this more apparent than in housing. This book casts light on how the virus has impacted the experience of home and housing through the lens of wider urban processes around transportation, land use, planning policy, racism, and inequality. Case studies from around the world examine issues around gentrification, housing processes, design, systems, finance and policy. Offering crucial insights for reforming cities to be more resilient to future crises, this is an invaluable resource for scholars and policymakers alike.

Abraham, William J. Divine Agency and Divine Action, Volume IV. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786535.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Following the first three volumes in the series on divine action, this fourth and final volume seeks a prescriptive account of God as an agent. Christian systematic theology raises deep metaphysical questions about the central concepts we use in our thinking about God. One of these central concepts bequeathed by the Christian tradition is that God is an agent. While volumes 2 and 3 offered a wide range of specific divine actions offered in the canonical Christian tradition, the question of how to articulate this basic conviction arises. In this volume, Abraham expounds the concept of God as agent by applying it to various traditional problems in Christian doctrine like the relation of freedom and grace, divine action in liberation theology, the presence of God in the Eucharist, divine providence, the relationship of Christianity and Islam, the relation of the natural sciences to theology and apparent design, and the realm of the demonic. In keeping with the argument of the tetralogy as a whole, specific divine actions are the points of departure for reflection on these topics. The book aims not only to clarify the concept of God as an agent but also to articulate solutions to these traditional problems. It is designed to be the launchpad for further research in divine agency and divine action and how an account of God as an agent can throw fresh light on old theological and philosophical problems.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
While the implementation of evidence-based medicine guidelines is well studied, there has been little investigation into the extent to which a parallel evidence-based management movement has been influential within health care organizations. This book explores the various management knowledges and associated texts apparent in English health care organizations, and considers how the local reception of these texts was influenced by the macro level political economy of public services reform evident during the period of the politics of austerity. The research outlined in this volume shows that very few evidence-based management texts are apparent within health care organizations, despite the influence of certain knowledge producers, such as national agencies, think tanks, management consultancies, and business schools in the industry. Bringing together the often disconnected academic literature on management knowledge and public policy, the volume addresses the ways in which preferred management knowledges and texts in these publicly funded settings are sensitive to the macro level political economy of public services reform, offering an empirically grounded critique of the evidence-based management movement.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Ventilator trauma refers to complications of mechanical ventilation, which have an impact on morbidity and mortality. Two major forms of ventilator trauma may be distinguished—an acute form related to rupture of airspaces causing air-leak syndrome and a subacute form causing protracted inflammatory responses. A key feature of mechanically-ventilated lungs is the presence of non-aerated and unstable regions due to atelectasis, oedema, or consolidation. Because of mechanical interdependence, pressures acting in non-uniformly expanded lungs at the boundaries between non-aerated and aerated lung may be a multiple of the apparent transpulmonary pressure. The resulting effects have been reported to precipitate or contribute to ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI). The engineering terms stress and strain were recently proposed for better definition of risk-constellations for VILI. Because the aerated lung volume is positively correlated to compliance, driving-pressure can aid in identifying disproportionate combinations of tidal volumes and compliance.

At first sight, only the relation between politics and the rule of law is unspectacular. Current quarrels over the politization of the legal system (e.g. in Poland and Hungary) and the juridification of politics (which becomes apparent in the demand for rights) make it obvious that freedom is at stake when tensions between politics and the rule of law run high. This volume analyses from a perspective that unites multiple disciplines’ tendencies towards politization and juridification along with the ideologies that accompany them. It combines theoretical and historical essays with the presentation of current conflicts in Chile, Hungary, Poland and Germany.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Hypercapnia is a central component of current ‘protective’ ventilator management. Hypercapnia, and the associated acidosis, has potentially important biologic effects on immune responses, injury and repair. Arterial carbon dioxide tension PaCO2 is tightly governed under physiological conditions and small elevations rapidly increase spontaneous minute ventilation. In the mechanically-ventilated patient, elevated PaCO2 usually reflects reduced elimination. This can be because tidal volume or respiratory rate delivered by the ventilator are reduced, or because of the diseased lung per se. Hypercapnia has many effects that are clinically obvious, but research over the last decade reveals important consequences on inflammatory and cellular mechanisms that are not apparent at the bedside.

Ancient Egypt has bequeathed us a rich archaeological heritage of texts and images. Their meaning often becomes apparent only when their spatial dimension is taken into account. Informed by Susanne Bickel's epigraphic and archaeological research, the present volume focuses on the interplay of textual and visual perspectives in the analysis of Egyptian monuments and their spatial location. «Text-Bild-Objekte im archäologischen Kontext» unfolds this research perspective in 17 contributions, that combine text, image and spatial context, intended to describe both the contents and the methodology. The thematic spectrum of the contributions ranges from the Old Kingdom to the 19th century and from Nubia to Switzerland.

Résumé :
Abstract This volume proposes an account of the nature and practice of the Church that draws from work in contemporary analytic social metaphysics, social epistemology, and social ethics. In the first book-length study of ecclesiology in analytic theology, Joshua Cockayne offers a vision of the Church, according to which the Church is united as the body of Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit, despite the apparent diversity of the Church in its gathered, particular forms. This account of the oneness of the Church in and through the work of the persons of the Trinity is then applied to explore the nature of baptism, the Eucharist, and liturgy.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The Later Prehistory of North-West Europe provides a unique, up-to-date, and easily accessible synthesis of the later prehistoric archaeology of north-west Europe, transcending political and language barriers that can hinder understanding. By surveying changes in social forms, landscape organization, monument types, and ritual practices over six millennia, the volume reassesses the prehistory of north-west Europe from the late Mesolithic to the end of the pre-Roman Iron Age. It explores how far common patterns of social development are apparent across north-west Europe, and whether there were periods when local differences were emphasized instead. In relation to this, it also examines changes through time in the main axes of contact between the various regions of continental Europe, Britain, and Ireland. Key to the volume's broad scope is its focus on the vast mass of new evidence provided by recent development-led excavations. The authors collate data that has been gathered on thousands of sites across Britain, Ireland, northern France, the Low Countries, western Germany, and Denmark, using sources including unpublished 'grey literature' reports. The results challenge many aspects of previous narratives of later prehistory, allowing the volume to present a distinctively fresh perspective.

Résumé :
While astronomy is a burgeoning science, with tremendous increases in knowledge every year, it also has a tremendous past, one that has altered humanity's understanding of our place in the universe. The impact of astronomy on culture - whether through myths and stories, or through challenges to the intellectual status quo - is incalculable. This volume in the Greenwood Guides to the Universe series examines how human cultures, in all regions and time periods, have tried to make sense of the wonders of the universe. Astronomy and Culture shows students how people throughout time have struggled with the complexities apparent in the night sky, complexities that modern science has only just begun to understand.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter provides an overview of the philosophical questions about perceptual imagination and perceptual memory discussed in this volume. There are two central questions. The first is: How do perceptual imagination and memory resemble and differ from each other and from other kinds of sensory experience? These experiences seem alike in their apparent presentation of external objects or events, their perspectival nature, and their connection to one (or more) of the sense modalities. Yet, they are different with respect to their sense of immediacy: arguably, only when we perceive objects, do they seem to be present directly before us in our environment. The second question is: What role does each play in perception and in the acquisition of knowledge? Imagination, memory, and perception are typically taken to play different motivational and justificatory roles. This introductory discussion also outlines the structure of the volume and the contribution of the subsequent chapters.

Résumé :
Diagnosis 54Management 55Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world, affecting around 5 billion people, most of them from developing countries. The prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia in UK preschool children is ~8%, increasing considerably in inner city children; ~9% of under 5s in the USA are thought to be iron deficient. Depletion of iron stores is followed by the development of anaemia, initially with a normal mean cell volume (MCV). Continuing deficiency leads to impairment of erythropoiesis, with hypochromia and microcytosis apparent on blood film. Iron is essential in haemoglobin for oxygen transport, and is also found in myoglobin, and some enzymes (peroxidase, catalase, and cytochromes). Iron from red blood cell breakdown is recycled and excess iron stored as ferritin and haemosiderin....

Résumé :
This book is the first dedicated to linguistic parsing—the processing of natural language according to the rules of a formal grammar—in the minimalist framework. While the Minimalist Program has been at the forefront of generative grammar for several decades, it often remains inaccessible to computer scientists and others in adjacent fields. In particular, minimalism reveals a surprising paradox: human language is simpler than we thought, and yet it cannot be processed by the machinery used by computer scientists. In this volume, experts in the field show how to resolve this apparent paradox, and how to turn Chomsky’s abstract theories into working computer programs that can process sentences or make predictions about the time course of brain activity when dealing with language. The book will appeal to graduate students and researchers in formal syntax, computational linguistics, psycholinguistics, and computer science.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
‘Communal’ property is an important mechanism for allocating natural resources and regulating their use – whether for economic exploitation, recreational use or the promotion of biodiversity and nature conservation. The form which communal property regimes take, however, and their relationship to private property structures, varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and is poorly understood. Nevertheless, the importance of communal property, transcending the public/private divide in property rights, is increasingly apparent globally. Contributions to this volume focus on legal strategies for the development and protection of communal property and how these strategies ‘map’ over different jurisdictions (England and Wales, Scotland, South Africa, Cameroon, Italy, Israel and China) and jurisprudential approaches. They look at property beyond the traditional, individualist, and exclusive ownership model, engaging with communal property ‘practices’ in different jurisdictions to explore the theoretical grounding of communal property, not only linking theory with practice but also linking the local with the global.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter examines the place of the diary in the context of considerable growth in all forms of life-writing since the 1970s, through a reading of diaries published by Annie Ernaux. The diary has shared in the broader success of life-writing, but also remained marginal. This marginality is apparent within Ernaux’s overall writing project, broadly associated with the aims of autobiography, and even inimical to the diary. Her first diary publication, Journal du dehors, is positioned as an alternative to the journal intime by its focus on strangers and the outside world, but still points cautiously towards a diaristic authorial posture. Ernaux’s later publications of actual journaux intimes (including “Je ne suis pas sortie de ma nuit”) establish a complex relationship with Ernaux’s autobiographical works, acting as a supplement. L’Atelier noir, Ernaux’s writing diary (journal d’écriture), again acts as a supplement to her volume of complete works Écrire la vie.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter reviews the microscopic interpretation of the pre-exponential factor and the activation energy in rate constant expressions of the Arrhenius form. The pre-exponential factor of apparent unimolecular reactions is, roughly, expected to be of the order of a vibrational frequency, whereas the pre-exponential factor of bimolecular reactions, roughly, is related to the number of collisions per unit time and per unit volume. The activation energy of an elementary reaction can be interpreted as the average energy of the molecules that react minus the average energy of the reactants. Specializing to conventional transition-state theory, the activation energy is related to the classical barrier height of the potential energy surface plus the difference in zero-point energies and average internal energies between the activated complex and the reactants. When quantum tunnelling is included in transition-state theory, the activation energy is reduced, compared to the interpretation given in conventional transition-state theory.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This book is about the possibility and the prospects of making sense of non-propositional intentionality. Intentionality lies at the centre of a great deal of the philosophy of mind and, by and large, it is understood in propositional terms. Typically, the examples of intentionality deemed fundamental and the explanations of their natures rely on the idea of propositional content. But these commitments cannot go unquestioned and the (often implicit) acceptance of “propositionalism” has impeded philosophical discussion about the nature of intentionality in at least three noteworthy ways: (i) a precise statement of propositionalism has been left undeveloped; (ii) the motivations for propositionalism are rarely articulated; and (iii) apparent counterexamples and challenges to propositionalism, along with non-propositional theories of intentionality, are underexplored. The contributors to this volume explore and correct these impediments by discussing in detail what the commitment to propositionalism amounts to; by shedding light on why one might find the thesis attractive (or unattractive); and by exploring the ways in which one might depart from propositionalism.

Résumé :
Chapter 10 summarizes the main conclusion of this book that the objects traded within emissions trading schemes—namely, carbon units—are subject to the disciplines of international economic law in a series of complex and asymmetrical ways. The significance of this conclusion is underlined by the volume and extent of prima facie inconsistencies exhibited by emissions trading schemes with international economic law and identified in this book. While the evidence available and justifications in respect of some of these inconsistencies suggests that they might be saved by certain public policy-related exceptions in international economic law, it is equally apparent that many would not be shielded. Chapter 10 also passes comment on the potential means by which jurisdictions might inoculate their emissions trading schemes from the reach of international economic law, such as by insulating schemes from external transactions, denuding carbon units of proprietary status, and framing international trade in carbon units as a matter of mutual recognition of respective jurisdictions’ technical regulations or standards under international economic law.

Résumé :
In this latest volume in the Human Evolution Series, Erik Trinkaus and his co-authors synthesize the research and findings concerning the human remains found at the Sunghir archaeological site. It has long been apparent to those in the field of paleoanthropology that the human fossil remains from the site of Sunghir are an important part of the human paleoanthropological record, and that these fossil remains have the potential to provide substantial data and inferences concerning human biology and behavior, both during the earlier Upper Paleolithic and concerning the early phases of human occupation of high latitude continental Eurasia. But despite many separate investigations and published studies on the site and its findings, a single and definitive volume does not yet exist on the subject. This book combines the expertise of four paleoanthropologists to provide a comprehensive description and paleobiological analysis of the Sunghir human remains. Since 1990, Trinkaus et al. have had access to the Sunghir site and its findings, and the authors have published frequently on the topic. The book places these human fossil remains in context with other Late Pleistocene humans, utilizing numerous comparative charts, graphs, and figures. As such, the book is highly illustrated, in color. Trinkaus and his co-authors outline the many advances in paleoanthropology that these remains have helped to bring about, examining the Sunghir site from all angles.

Résumé :
This book draws from leading neuroscientists and scholars in the humanities and the arts to probe creativity in its many manifestations, including the everyday mind, the exceptional mind, the pathological mind, the scientific mind, and the artistic mind. It offers a brand new interdisciplinary approach revealing secrets of creativity that emerge from our everyday lives and from the minds of exceptional individuals and their discoveries or creations. Neuroscientists, psychologists, and humanities researchers provide new insights about the workings of the creative brain. Components of creativity are specified with respect to types of memory, forms of intelligence, modes of experience, and kinds of emotion. Authors in this volume take on the challenge of simultaneously characterizing creativity at behavioral, cognitive, and neurophysiological levels. It becomes apparent to all our authors that, with creativity, there is an interaction between consciously controlled processing and spontaneous processing. Neuroscientists describe the functioning of the brain and its circuitry in creative acts of scientific discovery or aesthetic production. Humanists from the fields of literature, art, and music give analyses of creativity in major literary works, musical compositions, and works of visual art. This book brings together an interdisciplinary group of contributors for a novel discussion of creativity from the confluence of neuroscience and the arts.

Résumé :
Analysts and citizens alike struggle to comprehend recent gyrations in US politics. The country did an apparent U-turn in just eight short years, from the election of Barack Obama and an all-Democratic Congress in 2008 to the election of Donald Trump and confirmation of GOP control of Congress in 2016. Twice in under a decade, ordinary citizens reacted by organizing local grassroots groups all over the country—with Tea Parties starting in 2009 and anti-Trump resistance groups starting in late 2016. Upending American Politics offers a fresh perspective on these developments by focusing on recent and newly changing organizational configurations, such as voluntary local citizens’ groups, elite advocacy organizations, consortia of wealthy donors, and candidate-led political campaigns. Contributors have collected many new kinds of data to document and probe changing organizational configurations at the national level and in the pivotal states of Wisconsin, North Carolina, Michigan, Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania. The volume offers insightful answers to key questions: Why has partisan polarization unfolded in a heavily rightward-tilted manner that sees Republicans embracing ever-more extreme positions? Why have widespread grassroots citizens movements erupted twice just eight years, and what impact have these movements had on the major political parties?

Résumé :
Organizational collaboration has played an important role in the field of strategic management in the last couple of decades. Though the importance of collaboration to entrepreneurship might seem apparent, research on it is distributed across multiple contexts, theoretical perspectives, and units of analysis. The aim of this volume is to highlight this diversity and emphasize the important roles that collaboration plays in value creation, resource acquisition, and the development of entrepreneurial ventures. Interorganizational collaboration involves two or more independent organizations working together under an incomplete contract to accomplish certain objectives. These collaborations might take many forms, ranging from relatively informal or narrow-scope exchanges to equity partnerships. Exciting prospects exist to more explicitly link collaboration to other topics in entrepreneurship, including the creation and discovery of entrepreneurial opportunities, technology entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial decision making, and cooperative commercialization strategies. This handbook is categorized into sections that address some of the most important topics related to collaboration and connect them to unique challenges and opportunities related to entrepreneurship. In this collection of work, leading scholars take stock of the current literature and aim to advance this body of research by highlighting the role that collaboration plays in value creation, resource acquisition, and the development of entrepreneurial ventures.

Résumé :
This volume examines the current resolution process for distressed micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and proposes a different, more appropriate, ‘modular’ approach to the treatment of such entities when faced with insolvency proceedings. MSMEs play a vital role in virtually all global economies. They are a primary means of employment and the vehicle by which entrepreneurs bring new business propositions to the market and deliver a range of products and services to local economies. MSMEs tend to be more reliant than larger businesses on favourable legal and regulatory climates in order to survive and thrive. Yet in assuming an extensive insolvency estate of significant worth, the presence of creditors and other concerned stakeholders to participate in and oversee the process, and the extensive involvement of courts and insolvency and legal professionals, insolvency regimes are often more tailored to the circumstances of larger businesses. These assumptions and features generally sit incongruously with the reality of MSMEs, whose estates characteristically have modest value and many of whose stakeholders tend to be disinterested in the MSME’s insolvency process. The Modular Approach developed in this text addresses the imbalances, inconsistencies, and lack of supervision which are often apparent in the treatment of insolvent MSMEs. The volume provides an overview of existing approaches to MSME insolvency, the place of MSMEs in the global economy, and the particular needs of MSMEs in financial distress. It then sets out the procedural framework, policy objectives, and key components of the Modular Approach, detailing how a choice of modules enables national policymakers a more flexible process for resolution. The volume outlines the roles, positions, and obligations of key stakeholder groups, and explains the managerial, administrative, and judicial functions of this approach. Finally, it explains how elements of the broader legal system should be aligned with, and supportive of, the optimal functioning of the Modular Approach.
