Résumé :
In this paper the visual reasoning that is part of visual thinking capabilities of the shape understanding system (SUS) is investigated. This research is a continuation of the authors' previous work focused on investigating understanding capabilities of the intelligent systems based on the shape understanding system. SUS is an example of the visual understanding system, where sensory information is transformed into the multilevel representation in the concept formation process that is part of the visual thinking capabilities. The visual reasoning involves transformation of the description of the object when passing consequent stages of the reasoning process and the reasoning and processing of the data are mutually dependent.

Résumé :
Objective: Evaluate the technical performance of the pre-analytical hemolysis-icterus-lipemia (HIL) check module on the ACL-TOP-750. Methods: 8433 routine coagulation samples were evaluated for HIL, the presence of clotting and low sample volume by both visual inspection and the pre-analytical HIL check module on the ACL-TOP-750. Results: 7726 samples were in agreement with both methods and 707 were not consistent. 356 samples with low volume were identified by visual inspection and 920 by the instrument (2.7 mL threshold). Visual inspection identified 56 lipemic samples while 13 of those with moderate or high lipemia were identified by the instrument. Visual inspection identified 47 hemolyzed samples while 7 with moderate or high hemolysis were identified by the instrument. Both visual inspection and the instrument identified 36 icteric samples. For triglyceride concentration and bilirubin concentration, there was good correlation between the ACL-TOP-750 and the DXC800 biochemistry analyzer. Among 30 samples with varying amounts of clotting, 27 were discovered by visual inspection and 3 were discovered by the instrument. Conclusion: The pre-analytical check module on the ACL-TOP-750 improved the detection rate of samples below the target 2.7 mL volume, and the accuracy in detection of HIL. However, the automated method could not replace visual assessment of clotting in samples.

Résumé :
<p>Enrolments in higher education programs in the creative and performing arts are increasing in many countries. Yet graduates of these degrees, who enter the broad sector known as the creative industries, face particular challenges in terms of securing long-term and sustainable employment. In addition, creative and performing artists face a range of mental challenges, caused by such factors as: the solitary nature of much creative practice, critical feedback by audiences and gatekeepers, or the general pressures associated with maintaining artistic relevance or integrity. The concepts of resilience and professional wellbeing are therefore highly relevant to those who pursue a career in creative industries, and while there has been an emerging body of work in this area, to date it has focussed on the performing arts area (e.g. music, theatre). Hence, in order to expand knowledge relevant to resilience and artists, this paper sets out to explore the extent to which current educators in the Australian context specifically address these issues within higher visual arts curricula; specifically the areas of illustration, design, film and photography. This was achieved via interviews with seventeen current academics working in these areas. The findings propose that higher education providers of programs in the visual arts consider placing a stronger emphasis on the embedded development of resilience and professional wellbeing capacities.</p>

Semantic information processing received at listening will be easier if it is accompanied by the creation of the visual image in iconic and symbolic form in the context of multimedia. Sounding information is consistently supported by opening the visual image that affects the listener with its dynamics and easy to understand. Development of symbolic-character code in the context of multimedia is required to develop automatic skill of binding the audible speech with the image. The technology of image creation is to help the listener adequately understand the meaning of the individual stories produced on the screen, put them into a single image, complete the image, and then use it as a structural model statements.

Process models are crucial artifacts in many domains, and hence, their proper comprehension is of importance. Process models mediate a plethora of aspects that are needed to be comprehended correctly. Novices especially face difficulties in the comprehension of process models, since the correct comprehension of such models requires process modeling expertise and visual observation capabilities to interpret these models correctly. Research from other domains demonstrated that the visual observation capabilities of experts can be conveyed to novices. In order to evaluate the latter in the context of process model comprehension, this paper presents the results from ongoing research, in which gaze data from experts are used as Eye Movement Modeling Examples (EMMEs) to convey visual observation capabilities to novices. Compared to prior results, the application of EMMEs improves process model comprehension significantly for novices. Novices achieved in some cases similar performances in process model comprehension to experts. The study’s insights highlight the positive effect of EMMEs on fostering the comprehension of process models.

Insects of several species rely on visual landmarks for returning to important locations in their environment, The "average landmark vector model" is a parsimonious model which reproduces some aspects of the visual homing behavior of bees and ants, To gain insights in the structure and complexity of the neural apparatus that might underly the navigational capabilities of these animals, the average landmark vector model was implemented in analog hardware and used to control a mobile robot. The experiments demonstrate that the apparently complex task of visual homing might be realized by simple and mostly peripheral neural circuits in insect brains.

Résumé :
Based on the presupposition that visual literacy skills are not usually learned unaided by osmosis, but require targeted learning support, this article explores how everyday encounters with visuals can be leveraged as contingent learning opportunities. The author proposes that a learner’s environment can become a visual learning space if appropriate learning support is provided. This learning support may be delivered via the anytime and anywhere capabilities of mobile learning (m-learning), which facilitates peer learning in informal settings. The study propositioned a rhizomatic m-learning model of visual skills that describes how the visuals one encounters in their physical everyday environment can be leveraged as visual literacy learning opportunities. The model was arrived at by following an approach based on heuristic inquiry and user-centred design, including testing prototypes with representative learners. The model describes one means visual literacy could be achieved by novice learners from contingent learning encounters in informal learning environments, through collaboration and by providing context-aware learning support. Such a model shifts the onus of visual literacy learning away from academic programmes and, in this way, opens an alternative pathway for the learning of visual skills. Implications for practice or policy: This research proposes a means for learners to leverage visuals they encounter in their physical everyday environment as visual literacy learning opportunities. M-learning software developers may find the pedagogical model useful in informing their own software. Educators teaching visual skills may find application of the learning model’s pedagogical assumptions in isolation in their own formal learning settings.

Nowadays, robots are dominating the manufacturing, entertainment, and healthcare industries. Robot vision aims to equip robots with the capabilities to discover information, understand it, and interact with the environment, which require an agent to effectively understand object affordances and functions in complex visual domains. In this literature survey, first, “visual affordances” are focused on and current state-of-the-art approaches for solving relevant problems as well as open problems and research gaps are summarized. Then, sub-problems, such as affordance detection, categorization, segmentation, and high-level affordance reasoning, are specifically discussed. Furthermore, functional scene understanding and its prevalent descriptors used in the literature are covered. This survey also provides the necessary background to the problem, sheds light on its significance, and highlights the existing challenges for affordance and functionality learning.

Résumé :
In the development of young children's senses and action mobility, good visual cognition could help them with good habits of reading, writing, and logical learning. Digital teaching materials are common in use of enhancing the creativity and learning effects. Within them, the interacting manners and their influences on learning effects and learning attitudes lead to enhance the learning motivations and effects. The fun of game maintains a longer learning attention and advances the cognitive skills in easy manners. Thus, this study intends to design a learning system – GoGoBox – by using augmented virtual technology. The methodology is to device a testing game, pre-test and after-test, to test a group of young children so as to understand the learning effects of augmented virtual game of GoGoBox on their visual cognitive skills. The esult of this study is: this learning system – GoGoBox can enhance the young children's cognitive skills. Furthermore, after experiencing this learning system, children's cognitive capability of visual discerning, figure and background, visual memory, and visual closure is all enhanced. The learning effects of visual discerning stand out of four. The capability of special relationship is with no apparent influences. There is no differentiation between male and female. Apparently the older children of 6 have better cognitive skills than those of 5.

Résumé :
Both neurophysiological and psychophysical experiments have pointed out the crucial role of recurrent and feedback connections to process context-dependent information in the early visual cortex. While numerous models have accounted for feedback effects at either neural or representational level, none of them were able to bind those two levels of analysis. Is it possible to describe feedback effects at both levels using the same model? We answer this question by combining Predictive Coding (PC) and Sparse Coding (SC) into a hierarchical and convolutional framework applied to realistic problems. In the Sparse Deep Predictive Coding (SDPC) model, the SC component models the internal recurrent processing within each layer, and the PC component describes the interactions between layers using feedforward and feedback connections. Here, we train a 2-layered SDPC on two different databases of images, and we interpret it as a model of the early visual system (V1 & V2). We first demonstrate that once the training has converged, SDPC exhibits oriented and localized receptive fields in V1 and more complex features in V2. Second, we analyze the effects of feedback on the neural organization beyond the classical receptive field of V1 neurons using interaction maps. These maps are similar to association fields and reflect the Gestalt principle of good continuation. We demonstrate that feedback signals reorganize interaction maps and modulate neural activity to promote contour integration. Third, we demonstrate at the representational level that the SDPC feedback connections are able to overcome noise in input images. Therefore, the SDPC captures the association field principle at the neural level which results in a better reconstruction of blurred images at the representational level.

Résumé :
The constant growth of pathologies affecting human mobility has led to developing of different assistive devices to provide physical and cognitive assistance. Smart walkers are a particular type of these devices since they integrate navigation systems, path-following algorithms, and user interaction modules to ensure natural and intuitive interaction. Although these functionalities are often implemented in rehabilitation scenarios, there is a need to actively involve the healthcare professionals in the interaction loop while guaranteeing safety for them and patients. This work presents the validation of two visual feedback strategies for the teleoperation of a simulated robotic walker during an assisted navigation task. For this purpose, a group of 14 clinicians from the rehabilitation area formed the validation group. A simple path-following task was proposed, and the feedback strategies were assessed through the kinematic estimation error (KTE) and a usability survey. A KTE of 0.28 m was obtained for the feedback strategy on the joystick. Additionally, significant differences were found through a Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon test for the perception of behavior and confidence towards the joystick according to the modes of interaction (p-values of 0.04 and 0.01, respectively). The use of visual feedback with this tool contributes to research areas such as remote management of therapies and monitoring rehabilitation of people’s mobility.

Résumé :
Advances in machine learning have generated increasing enthusiasm for tasks that require high-level reasoning on top of perceptual capabilities, particularly over visual data. Such tasks include, for example, image captioning, visual question answering, and visual navigation. Their evaluation is however hindered by task-specific confounding factors and dataset biases. In parallel, the existing benchmarks for abstract reasoning are limited to synthetic stimuli (e.g. images of simple shapes) and do not capture the challenges of real-world data. We propose a new large-scale benchmark to evaluates abstract reasoning over real visual data. The test involves visual questions that require operations fundamental to many high-level vision tasks, such as comparisons of counts and logical operations on complex visual properties. The benchmark measures a method's ability to infer high-level relationships and to generalise them over image-based concepts. We provide multiple training/test splits that require controlled levels of generalization. We evaluate a range of deep learning architectures, and find that existing models, including those popular for vision-and-language tasks, are unable to solve seemingly-simple instances. Models using relational networks fare better but leave substantial room for improvement.

Résumé :
Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAV) constitute a rapidly evolving technology field that is becoming more accessible and capable of supplementing, expanding, and even replacing some traditionally manual bridge inspections. Given the classification of the bridge inspection types as initial, routine, in-depth, damage, special, and fracture critical members, specific UAV mission requirements can be developed, and their suitability for UAV application examined. Results of a review of 23 applications of UAVs in bridge inspections indicate that mission sensor and payload needs dictate the UAV configuration and size, resulting in quadcopter configurations being most suitable for visual camera inspections (43% of visual inspections use quadcopters), and hexa- and octocopter configurations being more suitable for higher payload hyperspectral, multispectral, and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) inspections (13%). In addition, the number of motors and size of the aircraft are the primary drivers in the cost of the vehicle. 75% of vehicles rely on GPS for navigation, and none of them are capable of contact inspections. Factors that limit the use of UAVs in bridge inspections include the UAV endurance, the capability of navigation in GPS deprived environments, the stability in confined spaces in close proximity to structural elements, and the cost. Current research trends in UAV technologies address some of these limitations, such as obstacle detection and avoidance methods, autonomous flight path planning and optimization, and UAV hardware optimization for specific mission requirements.

Résumé :
A crucial problem for most animals is how to deal with multiple types of predator, which differ in their sensory capabilities and methods of prey detection. For animals capable of rapid colour change, one potential strategy is to change their appearance in relation to the threat posed by different predators. Here, we show that the dwarf chameleon, Bradypodion taeniabronchum , exhibits different colour responses to two predators that differ in their visual capabilities. Using a model of animal colour perception to gain a ‘predator's eye view’, we show that chameleons showed better background colour matching in response to birds than snakes, yet they appear significantly more camouflaged to the snake visual system because snakes have poorer colour discrimination.

Résumé :
Background: Living organisms such as algae, bacteria, and fungi are used to construct novel materials that offer possibilities for innovation. The article aims to explore mycelial growth and analyze the necessary conditions for its development and durability showing its visual potential as a material to be included in a design project. We have explored the aesthetic and metabolic opportunities of the Fungi Kingdom for the design and production of new materials. Methods: Taking the processes that are commonly implemented in biology and by adopting them into design processes, we grow filamentous fungi and isolate them in pieces designed to show and guarantee their natural development, exposing themselves to stress variables such as temperature, humidity, and substrate, among others. Results: Perpetuity is evident after nine years of cultivation; the colonies remain in the container preserving their morphological character and the pigmentation presented from the beginning of incubation with a slight variation in the saturation of the colors. Conclusions: Depending on the species of fungi used and the stimuli applied by the designer, a wide variety of textures, shapes, and colors can be propitiated, generating new product languages and artifacts where their aesthetic qualities are maintained over time.

Résumé :
In the typical visual laterality experiment, words and letters are more rapidly and accurately identified in the right visual field than in the left. However, while such studies usually control fixation, the deployment of visual attention is rarely restricted. The present studies investigated the influence of visual attention on the visual field asymmetries normally observed in single-letter identification and lexical decision tasks. Attention was controlled using a peripheral cue that provided advance knowledge of the location of the forthcoming stimulus. The time period between the onset of the cue and the onset of the stimulus (Stimulus Onset Asynchrony—SOA) was varied, such that the time available for attention to focus upon the location was controlled. At short SO As a right visual field advantage for identifying single letters and for making lexical decisions was apparent. However, at longer SOAs letters and words presented in the two visual fields were identified equally well. It is concluded that visual field advantages arise from an interaction of attentional and structural factors and that the attentional component in visual field asymmetries must be controlled in order to approximate more closely a true assessment of the relative functional capabilities of the right and left cerebral hemispheres.

Résumé :
Techniques to assess vision capabilities of multihandicapped persons are discussed as used in a specialty Optometric clinic. The major emphasis of the assessment is to obtain information about visual abilities and to make recommendations that promote optimum vision functioning. Techniques for working with children from special populations are discussed. The assessment includes a modified ophthalmic examination to identify and correct refractive error and to assess oculomotor functioning and ocular health. Visual acuity is measured using preferential looking and visual evoked potential techniques. Confrontation visual fields are measured. Several aspects of visual function are assessed with a parent interview.

Résumé :
AbstractThe ST3 mission will launch a space optical interferometer into heliocentric orbit, for observation of 50–100 sources on baselines of 40–200 m, during a time span of 3–4.5 months. The angular resolution in the 450–900 nm passband will be ≈ 500 microarcseconds. For Be stars, a velocity resolution of 50–100 km/s can be achieved by operating the interferometer in a Fourier Transform Spectrometer mode. This should allow spectrally resolved measurements of the brightness distribution in circumstellar disks, but will be limited to stars brighter than a visual magnitude of ≈ 5.

Résumé :
Dyslexia is a specific disorder in reading abilities. The aim of this study was to explore whether a short visual attentional training could improve reading capabilities in children with reading disorders by changing their oculomotor characteristics. Two groups (G1 and G2) of 25 children with reading disabilities and who are matched in IQ (intelligence quotient), sex, and age participated in the study. The allocation of a subject to a specific group (G1 = experimental group; G2 = control group) was generated in an unpredictable random sequence. The reading task was recorded twice for G1, i.e., before (T1) and after (T2) 10 min of visual attentional training. Training consisted of oculomotor tasks (saccades and pursuits movements) and searching tasks (three different exercises). For G2, the two reading tasks at T1 and T2 were done at an interval of 10 min instead. We found that at T1, oculomotor performances during reading were statistically similar for both groups of children with reading disabilities (G1 and G2). At T2, the group G1 only improved oculomotor capabilities significantly during reading; in particular, children read faster, and their fixation time was shortest. We conclude that short visual attentional training could improve the cortical mechanisms responsible for attention and reading capabilities. Further studies on a larger number of dyslexic children will be necessary in order to explore the effects of different training types on the visual attentional span given its important role on the orienting and focusing visuospatial attention and on the oculomotor performance in children with dyslexia.
