Texte intégralFor decades, social sciences researchers have searched for graphical forms to express human social relationships. The development of computer science and more recently of the Internet has given rise to a new field of research for visualization and social sciences professionals, that of social network visualization. This field can potentially offer new opportunities in reveal new patterns that can benefit a large number of applications and individuals in fields such as commerce, security, knowledge networks and marketing. A large part of social network visualization algorithms and systems relies on graph representations, highlighting relationships amongst individuals and groups of individuals, but mostly neglecting the other available attributes of individuals. Thus, this work presents a set of tools to represent and explore social networks visually, taking into consideration the attributes of the nodes. The first technique employs heterogeneous networks, where both individuals and communities are represented in the graph; the second solution uses visualization techniques based on multidimensional projection, which promote the placement of data in the plane according to some similarity criterion based on attribute; still another proposed technique coordinates multiple views in order to speed up focus in regions of interest in the data sets. The results indicate that the solutions promote high degree of representation power and that concept identification not easily obtained via other methods is possible; the evidence comes from case studies as well as a user evaluation. This work includes a study in the area of graph visualization for social network analysis as well as a system implementing the proposed solutions, that integrate network visualization and multidimensional projections to extract patterns from social networks

Texte intégralThis essay consists of a analysis of a visual campaign consisting of five pairs of images with two images each, so called diptychs, created by Greenpeace. By examining factors like visual working memories, symbolic interaction, socialization, communication methods and visual language and applying these onto a visual communication one could with more ease see how these work and interact. Like this we find out how the sender could make use of different methods of communication to mediate a message as well as how the recipient could come to receive and interpret this. Greenpeace has used ethos, logos and pathos to deliver their message, and a knowledge about their target audiences general socialization to appeal to those connotations that the audience have about the climate crisis and its consequences. By not including a text but instead focus on these connotations and speaking to the observers intellect, Greenpeace calls for personal perception and interpretation. They have also used bright colors, contrasts and interesting compositions to catch the observers eye, attention and interest.

Texte intégralIn vertebrates, perception of light is made possible through the conversion of photon energy into an electrochemical signal in photoreceptors. The photo-isomerization of the chromophore 11-cis-RAL into all-trans-RAL triggers a cascade of signal transduction and leads to loss of light sensitivity of photoreceptors, thus, a recycling process of chromophore called the rétinal visual cycle is involved to restore this sensitivity. The visual cycle takes place in the photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium and involves several proteins. The limiting step of this cycle is catalyzed by RPE-specific protein RPE65. Better understanding the regulation of this step might open up new ways for treatment of various pathologies related to the visual cycle activity. Our laboratory has shown that FATP1, a protein involved in lipid metabolism, inhibits the activity of RPE65 in vitro. In this study, we evaluated the effect of the lack of FATP1 on the activity of the visual cycle and visual function in a mouse model. FATP1 ko mice are characterized by lower a and b amplitudes of the elctroretinogram, delayed ERG and retinylesters accumulation recovery after bleache. 11-cis-RAL synthesis rates are similar to those of wt mice. FATP1 ko mice show a greater susceptibility to the aging effects: structural abnormalities were observed in the photoreceptors, Bruch's membrane and choroid without excessive accumulation of lipid or lipofuscin or retinal degeneration. The disturbance of visual function which accopagne the lack of FATP1 in mice could have a more increased effect in human who live longer and wich the retina receives more light. In conclusion, FATP1 might be an important component for the aging of the retina in humans

Texte intégralWe study the challenging problem of tracking an arbitrary object in video sequences with no prior knowledge other than a template annotated in the first frame. To tackle this problem, we build a robust tracking system consisting of the following components. First, for image region representation, we propose some improvements to the region covariance descriptor. Characteristics of a specific object are taken into consideration, before constructing the covariance descriptor. Second, for building the object appearance model, we propose to combine the merits of both generative models and discriminative models by organizing them in a detection cascade. Specifically, generative models are deployed in the early layers for eliminating most easy candidates whereas discriminative models are in the later layers for distinguishing the object from a few similar "distracters". The Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) is employed for building the discriminative object appearance models. Third, for updating the generative models, we propose a weakly-supervised model updating method, which is based on cluster analysis using the mean-shift gradient density estimation procedure. Fourth, a novel online PLS-DA learning algorithm is developed for incrementally updating the discriminative models. The final tracking system that integrates all these building blocks exhibits good robustness for most challenges in visual tracking. Comparing results conducted in challenging video sequences showed that the proposed tracking system performs favorably with respect to a number of state-of-the-art methods

Texte intégralOur thesis research is concerned with the estimation of motion saliency in image sequences. First, we have defined an original method to detect frames in which a salient motion is present. For this, we propose a framework relying on a deep neural network, and on the compensation of the dominant camera motion. Second, we have designed a method for estimating motion saliency maps. This method requires no learning. The motion saliency cue is obtained by an optical flow inpainting step, followed by a comparison with the initial flow. Third, we consider the problem of trajectory saliency estimation to handle progressive saliency over time. We have built a weakly supervised framework based on a recurrent auto-encoder that represents trajectories with latent codes. Performance of the three methods was experimentally assessed on real video datasets
