Résumé :
Abstract Objective The objective of our paper is to review all of the relevant literature in ophthalmology microsurgical education and identify which teaching methodologies were most effective. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature was conducted. Electronic databases, including Ovid MEDLINE, Cochrane CENTRAL, and EMBASE, were searched with preset terms. The search was through December 11, 2019. Eligibility criteria included studies with sufficient data for analyzing associations between surgical teaching techniques and success rates in surgical skills and the organization of the intervention as a microsurgical skills course, curriculum, or program. The articles were independently reviewed by two authors. Each included study was evaluated for quality using the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach and risk of bias using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing bias. Data Extraction and Synthesis Data extraction was performed by two reviewers and disagreements were checked by a third reviewer. A random-effects analysis was used to pool the outcomes of studies. Main Outcomes and Measures Outcomes included time for completion of surgical task, level of preparedness, competency score, and number of surgeries with complications. Results A total of 439 studies were reviewed and 13 studies (n = 8,790 surgical cases; n = 115 trainees) were included in the meta-analysis. Excluded articles studied cataract simulation training as the primary intervention or were not related to ophthalmology. All pooled results demonstrated a positive association with surgical outcomes; however, video-based education (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 2.49 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.36–4.63]; four effects [four studies]; n = 69; I 2 = 90%) and stepwise teaching method (odds ratio [OR = 3.84 [95% CI: 2.66–5.55]; six effects [six studies]; n = 6,968; I 2 = 39%) interventions were the most favorable. Conclusion and Relevance The following five interventions evaluated in this paper were found to be effective methods of improving performance outcomes in ophthalmic microsurgery: (1) didactic lectures, (2) video-based education, (3) surgical wet-laboratory, (4) stepwise method, and (5) direct supervision and feedback. Our meta-analysis concludes that video-based education and stepwise teaching interventions are the most effective methods for a microsurgical ophthalmology training curriculum. Combining the strengths of the interventions analyzed in this study should be considered when implementing and adjusting ophthalmic surgical skills curriculums.

Résumé :
Despite agreement on the value of father involvement in children’s lives, research has been limited due to the exclusion of fathers in studies, questionable validity of mothers’ reports on father involvement, and simple measures of fathering behavior. Our study extends previous research by comparing reports of father involvement using robust, multidimensional father involvement measures. Data from 113 fathers and 126 mothers reporting on 221 children were used to assess father involvement. Results indicate that fathers reported significantly higher levels of involvement than mothers reported. Findings from hierarchical linear models suggest that race/ethnicity and mothers’ reports of positive relationship quality were associated with smaller discrepancies in reports of father involvement, whereas nonmarried partnerships, older children, father residence, and biological status predicted larger discrepancies. Our study demonstrates the importance of obtaining father involvement reports directly from fathers and why father involvement should be assessed as a multidimensional construct to examine fathering behavior.

Résumé :
This paper deals with the delay, delay variation - jitter, packet loss rate and bandwidth as quality of service parameters, in the form of four types of video quality degradations. The impact of defined levels of degradation on subjective impressions (given as mean opinion scores) is analyzed. ReTRiEVED video dataset with publicly available subjective scores is used in the analysis. Three full-reference measures are used for objective assessment of video quality. The degree of consistency of subjective and objective quality scores is shown through scatter plots and quantitative measures (linear correlation coefficient and correlation of the ranks). Based on the interpolation functions, quality of service parameters are mapped to subjective experience. We show that jitter is a much more destructive effect than other degradation types.

Résumé :
SYNOPSIS We investigate the association between earnings quality and investor disagreement regarding the valuation consequences of earnings announcements. A primary purpose of financial reporting, including periodic earnings releases, is to convey useful information to investors. However, earnings may be of low quality due to an inherent failure in the accounting process to accurately represent the economic entity, unintentional errors, or intentional manipulation on the part of management. We argue that low-quality earnings will be associated with more divergent opinions regarding the implication of the earnings signal (i.e., differential interpretations) and, thus, be reflected in their trading activity. We use two abnormal accrual measures and an earnings persistence measure as proxies for earnings quality. We proxy for differential interpretations using abnormal trading volume unrelated to returns and analyst forecast jumbling. Our results show that low earnings quality is associated with more differential interpretations of earnings announcements measures.

Résumé :
The paper discusses how visual research methods that draw on ethnomethodology and conversation analysis can help sociologists to reveal how optometrists’ assess the clarity of their clients’ distance vision. It argues that the detailed analysis of video-recorded interactions in optometric consultation rooms can help reveal the practical organization of the ‘routine’ work through which optometrists examine and assess their clients’ sight. Save for the contribution of the paper to methodological discussions about the use of visual data for the analysis of the practical work of optometrists, the paper also demonstrates how video-based research can add to recent debates in organizational sociology, workplace studies, and practice theory as well as to discussions about service quality and quality of care in health-service settings.

Résumé :
Tape recorders have been shown to affect measures of voice perturbation. Few studies, however, have been conducted to quantitatively justify the use or exclusion of certain types of recorders in voice perturbation studies. This study used sinusoidal and triangular waves and synthesized vowels to compare perturbation measures extracted from directly digitized signals with those recorded and played back through various tape recorders, including 3 models of digital audio tape recorders, 2 models of analog audio cassette tape recorders, and 2 models of video tape recorders. Signal contamination for frequency perturbation values was found to be consistently minimal with digital recorders (percent jitter=0.01%–0.02%), mildly increased with video recorders (0.05%–0.10%), moderately increased with a high-quality analog audio cassette tape recorder (0.15%), and most prominent with a low-quality analog audio cassette tape recorder (0.24%). Recorder effect on amplitude perturbation measures was lowest in digital recorders (percent shimmer = 0.09%–0.20%), mildly to moderately increased in video recorders and a high-quality analog audio cassette tape recorder (0.25%–0.45%), and most prominent in a low-quality analog audio cassette tape recorder (0.98%). The effect of cassette tape material, length of spooled tape, and duration of analysis were also tested and are discussed.

Video surveillance is one of the most important components of the complete security solution. With the development of the Internet and technologies this important piece of safety is available for average customers not only locally, but also remotely with the help of cloud computing technologies. In the scientific works there are no studies that cover this topic so far. This research aims to find the major factors that will affect customers’ perception of the service quality, and reasons that will drive customers to keep using the service. As it was found, trust can play an important role in identifying the continuance intention to use services; and the seven major factors of VSaaS quality (rapport, reliability, responsiveness, flexibility, features, security, and privacy) would be the major players in defining quality, and hence perceived usefulness and continuous intention to use the services.

Résumé :
AbstractHate speech annotation for training machine learning models is an inherently ambiguous and subjective task. In this paper, we adopt a perspectivist approach to data annotation, model training and evaluation for hate speech classification. We first focus on the annotation process and argue that it drastically influences the final data quality. We then present three large hate speech datasets that incorporate annotator disagreement and use them to train and evaluate machine learning models. As the main point, we propose to evaluate machine learning models through the lens of disagreement by applying proper performance measures to evaluate both annotators’ agreement and models’ quality. We further argue that annotator agreement poses intrinsic limits to the performance achievable by models. When comparing models and annotators, we observed that they achieve consistent levels of agreement across datasets. We reflect upon our results and propose some methodological and ethical considerations that can stimulate the ongoing discussion on hate speech modelling and classification with disagreement.

Résumé :
P2P networks are a technology able to deliver real time and video-on-demand services over IP networks. Layered video coding techniques are being introduced due to their ability to deliver streams at different scales (temporal, spatial and SNR) that solve the heterogeneity problem. This eases transmission in the case of limited bandwidth, as the devices can pick and decode the minimum bit rate base layer. Existing work examines layered video in client-server scenarios. In contrast, this paper analyzes scalable coding H.264/SVC over P2P networks based on an SNR-temporal Codec. Due to the interdependency between the different SVC layers, issues of reliability and quality of experience arise unless proper measures are taken to protect the base layer. The authors explore the effectiveness of a combination of P2P strategies, for example, hybrid P2P architecture, P2P locality, and P2P redundancy, to assess the viability and benefits of scalable video coding over P2P. The resulting performance is compared with a state-of-the-art P2P TV platform.

Résumé :
Today's IEEE 802.11n WLAN are capable of delivering the essential bandwidth for video by using MPEG-4 or H.264 codec compression. However, 802.11n devices are popular for delivering wireless video transmission. Even though there are some challenges for these devices specifically severe network congestion that degrade the quality of video transmission. For assessing the video transmission quality during a simulation on 802.11n WLAN technology, we extended a framework and toolset (802.11nMyEvalVid) which can be used to measures the QoS constraints in wireless networks, such as throughput, delays, and end-to-end delay. However, it also supports PSNR, which is a received video quality measuring technique based on a comparison of frame-by-frame. This chapter focused on a framework 802.11nMyEvalVid that can be used for research and evaluating new techniques for MAC-layer optimizations for simulating MPEG-4, H.264/AVC and H.264/SVC video over 802.11n WLAN in a more efficient and reliable way.

This chapter is a meta-analysis of teen brain research and social media technology such as Facebook that could result in spiraling rates of teenage pregnancy. The author discusses contemporary theories of brain circuitry including teen brain structure and function as one of the plausible reasons for rising teenage pregnancy rates. The author argues that the challenge is to control the quality and influence of Facebook on teen behaviors, actions, and decisions to minimize the growing influence of social networking sites. In the conclusive section of the chapter, the author focuses on the expansion and extension of instructional and non-instructional physical activities, exergames, and active video games strategies to control the quality and influence of Facebook content by presenting research that advocates use of such activities and games within the Facebook interface. The author ends the chapter by mapping a future research direction of cross-cultural empirical investigation. The author wraps the chapter with a summative conclusion.

Résumé :
The authors present two methods for examining video quality using the Structural Similarity (SSIM) index: Iterative Distortion Estimate (IDE) and Cumulative Distortion using SSIM (CDSSIM). In the first method, three types of slices are iteratively reconstructed frame-by-frame for three different combinations of packet loss and the resulting distortions are combined using their probabilities to give the total expected distortion. In the second method, a cumulative measure of the overall distortion is computed by summing the inter-frame propagation impact to all frames affected by a slice loss. Furthermore, the authors develop a No-Reference (NR) sparse regression framework for predicting the CDSSIM metric to circumvent the real-time computational complexity in streaming video applications. The two methods are evaluated in resource allocation and packet prioritization schemes and experimental results show improved performance and better end-user quality. The accuracy of the predicted CDSSIM values is studied using standard performance measures and a Quartile-Based Prioritization (QBP) scheme.

In the last decade, surveillance camera technology has become widely practiced in public and private places to ensure the safety of individuals. Merely, face to limits of violation the private life of people and the inability to identify malicious persons that hid their faces, finding a new policy of surveillance video has become compulsory. The authors' work deals on the development of a suspicious person detection system using a new insect behaviour algorithm called artificial social cockroaches ASC based on a new image representation method (n-gram pixel). It has as input a set of artificial cockroaches (human images) to classify them (hide) into shelters (classes) suspicious or normal depending on a set of aggregation rules (shelter darkness, congener's attraction and security quality). Their experiments were performed on a modified MuHAVi dataset and using the validation measures (recall, precision, f-measure, entropy and accuracy), in order to show the benefit derived from using such approach compared to the result of classical algorithms (KNN and C4.5). Finally, a visualisation step was achieved to see the results in graphical form with more realism for the purpose to help policeman, security associations and justice in their investigation.
