Résumé :
The first in-depth study of David Bowie’s music videos across a sustained period takes on interweaving storyworlds of an iconic career. Remarkable for their capacity to conjure elaborate imagery, Bowie’s videos provide fascinating exemplars of the artistry and remediation of music video. When their construction is examined across several years, they appear as time-travelling vessels, transporting kooky characters and strange story-world components across time and space. By charting Bowie’s creative and collaborative process across five distinct phases, David Bowie and the Art of Music Video shows how he played a vital role in establishing music video as an artform. Filling a gap in the existing literature, this book shines a light on the significant contributions of directors such as Mick Rock, Stanley Dorfman and David Mallet, each of whom taught Bowie much about how to use the form. By examining Bowie’s collaborative process, his use of surrealist strategies and his integration of avant-garde art with popular music and media, the book provides a history of music video in relation to the broader fields of audiovisual media, visual music and art. Résumé :
This article appears in theOxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aestheticsedited by John Richardson, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis. Although YouTube is rightly acknowledged as one of the pivotal forms of social networking to have emerged in the last decade, relatively little attention has been paid to its specific impact on the form and content of music video. From its tentative beginnings in the 1970s, music video quickly established itself as one of the principal—and most powerful—components of the popular music industry. This chapter examines the ways in which the creative opportunities provided by YouTube’s overt democratization of modes of video production, presentation, and consumption have had economic, aesthetic, and political repercussions on popular music practices and have fundamentally shifted traditional understandings of supply and demand.

Résumé :
Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Eighth Edition With Online Video, provides a comprehensive approach to physical fitness appraisal and customized exercise prescription. The text synthesizes research and practice with concepts and theories from exercise physiology, kinesiology, measurement, psychology, and nutrition to clearly convey how assessments from physical fitness testing inform the design of individualized exercise programs. The eighth edition of Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription reflects the latest exercise testing and prescription guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as well as physical activity recommendations from the U.S. government and American Heart Association. It also takes into account recent ACSM guidelines for medical exam and exercise testing requirements to consider before beginning exercise programs. Additional updates to the eighth edition include the following: • Significant expansion of the online video clips, which now demonstrate nearly 75 fitness tests, including functional movement assessment and push-up and pull-up testing • New protocols and assessments for each of the five fitness components, from self-paced treadmill protocols for cardiorespiratory fitness to the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) for assessment of balance • Updated blood pressure standards for hypertension • Expanded information on the use of technology to monitor physical activity, including wearable activity trackers and mobile apps • Updated information on the use of workspace design to promote physical activity and exercise • Extensive updates to the supporting research for the assessment and testing protocols Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Eighth Edition, is structured around five physical fitness components: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular fitness (strength, endurance, and power), body composition, flexibility, and balance. The text begins with an overview of physical activity, health, and chronic disease, including a discussion of preliminary health screening and risk classification. It then leads into field and laboratory assessment and testing protocols, followed by prescription guidelines for designing exercise programs to improve each fitness component. Readers will find the latest information on maximal and submaximal graded exercise testing in healthy populations, as well as muscular fitness testing protocols and norms for children and adults. Each chapter begins with key questions to help readers focus on essential information. Sidebars lend practical insight to the content. Key points, review questions, and key terms reinforce concepts and summarize chapter content for better retention. An instructor guide, test package, chapter quizzes, and presentation package plus image bank provide tools for instructors to use for lecture preparation, creative content delivery, and class assessment. The online video clips, newly revised for the eighth edition, further aid student comprehension of the material and provide instructors an additional tool for classroom demonstration. Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Eighth Edition, truly bridges the gap between research and practice. Its unique scope, depth of coverage, and clearly outlined approach make it an invaluable resource for students and exercise science professionals who want to increase their knowledge, skill, and competence in assessing clients' fitness and designing individualized exercise programs.

Résumé :
This chapter explores altered states of consciousness in interactive video games and virtual reality applications. First, a brief overview of advances in the sound and graphics of video games is provided, which has led to ever-more immersive capabilities within the medium. Following this, a variety of games that represent states of intoxication, drug use, and hallucinations are discussed, in order to reveal how these states are portrayed with the aid of sound and music, and for what purpose. An alternative trajectory in games is also explored, as various synaesthetic titles are reviewed, which provide high-adrenaline experiences for ravers, and simulate dreams, meditation, or psychedelic states. Through the analysis of these, and building upon the previous chapters of Inner Sound, this chapter presents a conceptual model for ‘Altered States of Consciousness Simulations’: interactive audio-visual systems that represent altered states with regards to the sensory components of the experience.

Résumé :
Temporal and spatial relations are often regarded as paradigmatic categorical properties that pro-vide a counterexamples to the claim that all fundamental natural properties powers (potencies)—properties that are dispositional in nature/essence. In this chapter, I consider the consequences for this debate of thinking that a good physical theory should be background-independent. I propose that the conception of time and space not as a background but as an active component of the physical universe help show that temporal and spatial properties and relations need not be considered as necessarily categorical.

Résumé :
Fitness education is often overlooked for various reasons: no equipment, no weight room, large class size, or lack of professional development. Designing and Teaching Fitness Education Courses provides real solutions for all these issues. This book offers secondary-level physical educators innovative ideas, practical answers, and guidance in implementing fitness education programming that will meet the needs of all students. Designing and Teaching Fitness Education Courses is packed with highly useful tools and resources: • 211 instructional photos showing exercises and stretches that require no equipment and are easily adapted for varying abilities • 18 pacing guides that form a week-by-week blueprint for implementing a semester-long fitness education course • A robust online resource with ◦ all 18 pacing guides, as well as a blank template for developing your own; ◦ 139 video demonstrations of all the book’s exercises and stretches; ◦ PowerPoint presentations to show in PE classes, including video demonstrations of the book’s exercises and stretches; and ◦ teacher aids and student handouts, including assignments, assessments, posters, and a 12-week personal fitness plan Teachers can use the pacing guides to develop a semester-long fitness education course that can be implemented in either a traditional or block schedule. These guides offer objectives, class discussion topics, activities, assessments, and teaching strategies for each week of an 18-week semester. All topics in the guides are aligned with SHAPE America’s National Standards and Grade-Level Outcomes for K–12 Physical Education. The authors guide teachers in addressing the following priorities within a fitness education course: social and emotional learning; behavior modification principles and adherence to fitness activities; social cognitive theory; classroom management; student safety; equity, diversity, and inclusion; and social justice. Designing and Teaching Fitness Education Courses also includes a detailed chapter on nutrition education written by internationally recognized sport nutritionist Lisa Dorfman, who provides teachers a wealth of information to integrate into fitness courses. Teachers will learn how to integrate a quality fitness education curriculum into any setting (rural, urban, or suburban) and any learning model (remote, hybrid, or in-person learning). Designing and Teaching Fitness Education Courses is organized into three sections: • Part I presents both theoretical and practical knowledge of fitness education; its importance in a standards-based curriculum; pedagogical and content knowledge considerations; nutrition, wellness, and consumer issues; and the general components of fitness education. • Part II focuses on various components of fitness education: flexibility, strength, and cardiorespiratory fitness. This part includes stretching and muscular strength and endurance workouts, illustrated with photos in the book and videos in the online resource. • Part III guides readers in enabling students to participate in community fitness and activity events to support the development of lifelong fitness habits. Through Designing and Teaching Fitness Education Courses, teachers will be able to provide appropriate fitness activities that will lead to the elevated health and wellness of students and a greater appreciation for participating in lifelong activities. Note: A code for accessing HKPropel is included with all new print books.

Résumé :
Abstract In successive single-set productions of Coriolanus, Julius Caesar, and Antony and Cleopatra, Ivo van Hove’s Roman Tragedies transforms the stage into a high-tech version of Shakespeare’s Globe, mimicking how global media stage political debates and generate the simulacrum of war and social conflict. Mixing live actors with video projections displayed on monitors spaced on and above the stage, van Hove encourages spectators to move from one viewing space to another, to order drinks, check email, or tweet on desktop computers. Extending Shakespeare’s ‘all the world’s a stage’ conceit to a world connected by ‘clouds’ of information transported on viewless wings and deposited in airy drop boxes, van Hove’s stage is everywhere and nowhere at once. But in replicating the aesthetic design of global media, while suppressing the populist components of Coriolanus and Julius Caesar, van Hove arguably extends only the illusion of emancipation to spectators ‘immersed’ in competing demands on their attention.

Résumé :
This chapter examines the cultural “confusion” that existed in the United States between Osama bin Laden and Barack Obama. It uses the cultural slippages (Obama/Osama), conspiratorial elisions (Obama is Osama), and religious assumptions (Obama, like Osama, is Muslim) that surround Osama and Obama as points for analyzing racialized dynamics that underlie narratives of U.S. exceptionalism, military power, and global dominance. It identifies some of the myriad streams through which popular culture effects its messages: T-shirts, web tools (photo morphing), memes, hip-hop, tweets, YouTube videos, and the like. Attending to these media formats is an essential component of examining sense-making across the complexities of U.S. cultures. The chapter argues that the “confusion” between Osama and Obama is more than just difficulty with name pronunciation, lack of familiarity with Islam, or merging of nonwhite skin color, but is instead a complex negotiation of racial intersections with national narratives.

Résumé :
ISIS Propaganda offers a comprehensive overview and analysis of the Islamic State’s (IS) propaganda. Combining a range of different theoretical perspectives from across the social sciences and using rigorous methods, the authors pursue several interconnected tasks. They trace the origins of IS’s message, they lay bare the strategic logic guiding its evolution, they examine each of its many components (magazines, videos, music, social media, etc.) and show how they work together to radicalize audiences’ worldviews, and they highlight the challenges such a “full-spectrum propaganda” raises in terms of counterterrorism. The volume hence not only represents a one-stop point for any analyst of IS and Salafi-jihadism, but also a rich contribution to the study of text and visual propaganda, radicalization and political violence, and international security.

cárdenas, micha. Poetic Operations. Duke University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478022275.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In Poetic Operations artist and theorist micha cárdenas considers contemporary digital media, artwork, and poetry in order to articulate trans of color strategies for safety and survival. Drawing on decolonial theory, women of color feminism, media theory, and queer of color critique, cárdenas develops a method she calls algorithmic analysis. Understanding algorithms as sets of instructions designed to perform specific tasks (like a recipe), she breaks them into their component parts, called operations. By focusing on these operations, cárdenas identifies how trans and gender-non-conforming artists, especially artists of color, rewrite algorithms to counter violence and develop strategies for liberation. In her analyses of Giuseppe Campuzano's holographic art, Esdras Parra's and Kai Cheng Thom's poetry, Mattie Brice's digital games, Janelle Monáe's music videos, and her own artistic practice, cárdenas shows how algorithmic analysis provides new modes of understanding the complex processes of identity and oppression and the intersection of gender, sexuality, and race.

Hughes, Charles. Country Music and the Recording Industry. Sous la direction de Travis D. Stimeling. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190248178.013.6.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter explores the role of the recording industry in framing and fueling the development of country music from the 1920s to the present. It primarily examines the way that artists, producers, and record companies developed and manipulated the tenacious debate between “tradition” and “crossover” that continues to structure the music as art, commodity, and cultural symbol. The notion of country authenticity is a function of the attempt to establish country as a distinct and sellable genre. While the recording industry (particularly in Nashville) often gets cast as the villain in debates over country “authenticity,” this chapter suggests that a historical examination of this relationship reveals a more complicated story that has marked the careers of artists from Jimmie Rodgers to Taylor Swift. Swift’s notable work with social media, viral videos, and other components of the media landscape facing recording artists in the 2000s is the latest iteration of a much longer story for country artists, audiences, and record labels.

McKeon, Andrew, B. Mark Keegan et W. Oliver Tobin. Mayo Clinic Cases in Neuroimmunology. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780197583425.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In the past 2 decades, diagnostics and therapeutics in neuroimmunology have rapidly evolved and increased in complexity. Diagnosis is assisted by various laboratory and advanced imaging techniques. Randomized clinical trials in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica, and smaller studies for rarer autoimmune diseases, have led to distinct immune molecule–targeted and mechanism-specific therapies. The fields of cerebrovascular medicine, neurooncology, and neuroinfectious diseases have not remained static either. All of these gains present a challenge, however, in that early and accurate neurologic diagnosis is more important than ever. In our experience, some diagnostic pitfalls lie in the interpretation of test results and images without reference to the nuances of the clinical history and examination. Although some things change (eg, technology), other things never change (eg, clinical common sense). The 83 case-based chapters focus on key components of the history, examination and test findings, and differential diagnosis, although we also reference treatment approaches extensively throughout. To bring some form to this extensive repertoire of cases, the book is divided into 3 sections covering central nervous system demyelinating disease, autoimmune neurologic disorders, and others. Illustrations include imaging and, where relevant, pathologic images and video material. Board review–style questions are also provided.

Anderson, Owen. Running Form. Human Kinetics, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781718214590.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
For many runners, running technique is an afterthought—one they don't think about until an injury or plateau keeps them from achieving their goals. Running Form underscores the importance of proper form and shows you how to elevate your performance to the greatest possible extent with the smallest risk of injury. Owen Anderson, PhD, is a coach to elite runners from around the globe. In Running Form, he describes the common problem of runners moving on “square wheels” by braking with each step, adopting inefficient stances, or risking injury with excessive ground impact. He pinpoints the components of good form—foot-strike, shin and shank angle, stance time, cadence, body lean, and posture—to help you understand where you can make small changes that offer significant improvements. Then, using a basic video camera or smartphone, you can analyze your own form and apply specific drills and exercises to correct any deficiencies. Numerous photos incorporate lines and arrows to help you clearly identify the appropriate angles and movements of sound technique. No expensive software or biomechanics degree is required to learn how to run faster and with more efficiency and to significantly reduce your risk of injury. Get rid of those running patterns that hurt performance and destroy running economy. Running Form gives you the knowledge to perfect your running form so you can train consistently and improve with each stride. AUDIENCE A guide for serious runners, coaches, and triathletes. Runners who have experienced chronic injuries due to form flaws will appreciate this book.

Résumé :
Surinamese Music in the Netherlands and Suriname published in Dutch in 1990 was the first book to provide an overview of the music styles originating from the land that had recently gained its independence from the Netherlands. It examines both the instruments and the way in which they are played as well as the melodic and rhythmic components of music produced by the country’s ethnically diverse populations, including people of Amerindian, African, South Indian, and Javanese descent. A new generation of musicians of Surinamese descent has carried on making music, and some of their elders referred to in the original edition have died. The catalog of recordings that have become available has also expanded, particularly in the areas of hip-hop, rap, jazz, R&B, and new fusions such as kaskawi. This edition, in English for the first time, includes a new opening chapter by Marcel Weltak giving a historical sketch of Suriname’s relationship to the Netherlands. It includes updates on the popular music of second and third generation musicians of Surinamese descent in the Netherlands, and Weltak's own subsequent and vital research into the Amerindian and maroon music of the interior. It is followed by the integral text of the original edition. New appendices have been added to this edition that include a bibliography and updated discography, a listing of films, videos, and DVDs on or about Surinamese music or musicians, and concise alphabetically arranged notes on musical instruments and styles as well as brief biographies of those authors who contributed texts.
