Résumé :
This paper presents the results of a survey-based study, which involved 120 small and medium sized enterprises in the East Midlands region of the UK, and aims to explore small and medium sized enterprises environmental practices, environmental capabilities and awareness of the regional support for green growth. Environmental capabilities of small and medium sized enterprises are found to be bound to energy efficiency projects, with very few small and medium sized enterprises having a strategic outlook toward developing these capabilities. The majority of small and medium sized enterprises did not access governmental grants to improve energy efficiency, and those who did accessed governmental rather than NGO or private sources. Around a third of small and medium sized enterprises did not invest in any form of Environmental Management System or Environmental Management Accreditation over the last two years. Environmental capabilities, which are considered to have a direct positive impact on cost reduction, are found to be attracting the highest demand from small and medium sized enterprises. The study offers a typology of small and medium sized enterprises environmental capabilities providing a valuable conceptual development in understanding the links between various environmental capabilities and their significance for the strategic success of an enterprise.

Résumé :
The small and medium-sized enterprises provide much economic dynamism for macroeconomic development in China. However, many small and medium-sized enterprises have to face financing difficulties due to external factors and internal factors, such as the willingness of financial institutions to lend and the low credit of small and medium-sized enterprises. The establishment of private banks plays a very important role in alleviating the financing difficulties of small and medium-sized enterprises and eliminating financial suppression. This paper takes the listed small and medium-sized enterprises as samples to study the impact of the development of private banks on the small and medium-sized enterprises financing. The conclusions show that the development of private banks can alleviate the financing difficulties of small and medium-sized enterprises.

Résumé :
The evaluation of financing ability is very important to promote the small and medium-sized borrowing capacity of science and technology, and it is the first premise to clarify the financing obstacles of enterprises. However, the traditional view only emphasizes the role of self-ability and neglects the research of financing environment. With the development of national economy, science and technology-based small and medium-sized enterprises have received extensive attention, mainly because science and technology-based small and medium-sized enterprises are the main force to promote national economic development. Because of their own and external factors, small and medium-sized science and technology enterprises generally have financing problems. Improving the financing ability of small and medium-sized enterprises is an effective way to solve the problem of capital shortage. At the same time, many small and medium-sized enterprises face more risks in their development, and their growth is unpredictable, which makes it difficult for financial institutions such as banks to make loan decisions. However, at present, some small and medium-sized enterprises still have many unsolved problems in the financing process, which affects the development of high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises. This requires relevant departments to pay full attention to the optimization of their financing system, constantly innovate financing methods and lay a solid foundation for their subsequent development.

Résumé :
The supply of funds is a very important part of their development. Due to the problems of small and medium-sized enterprises with insufficient credit in banks and fewer mortgageable assets, it is challenging to obtain funds from banks for development and operation. Supply chain finance can help it solve these problems. Supply chain finance focuses on core enterprises, manages the capital flow, logistics and information flow of upstream and downstream small and medium-sized enterprises, and transforms the uncontrollable risks of a single enterprise into the controllable risks of the supply chain enterprise. The risk is controlled in the lowest financial service through three-dimensional access to various information. As the leader of China’s logistics enterprises, SF Holdings has a mature supply chain management system and big data analytics capabilities and has more enterprise information, which can provide related financial services for small and medium-sized enterprises. This paper will study the supply chain finance model of SF Express Holdings, analyze its development and existing problems, put forward corresponding suggestions, and make predictions for its future development and the development of supply chain finance.

Résumé :
Problem setting. In Ukraine, state support for small businesses was introduced in 2000. Currently, the mechanism of state support of economic entities is regulated by a number of acts of national legislation. However, the place of the legal institution of state support in the system of economic law, its relationship with state aid, the criteria for the admissibility of state aid in the context of the unification of national legislation with EU legislation continue to remain debatable in the science of economic law. Analysis of recent researches and publications. Economic and legal problems of small and medium-sized enterprises and their state support were studied by many domestic and foreign scientists. Only recently, these issues were considered in the collective monograph of the Research Institute of Legal Support of Innovative Development of the National Academy of Sciences, the monograph of D.S. Korytin, who studied the legal regulation of the economic activity of small and medium-sized enterprises, the dissertations of Feofanova I.M., who considered the economic and legal aspect of the admissibility of state aid and Petrova N.O., who studied the administrative and legal principles of monitoring state aid sub economic entities in Ukraine. Purpose of the research is to determine the place of the institute of state support of small and medium-sized enterprises in the system of economic law of Ukraine. Аrticle’s main body. Small and medium-sized enterprises play a significant role in the world economy. However, the operating conditions of small and medium-sized enterprises in Ukraine are difficult. Obstacles are the imperfection and burdensomeness of the taxation system, the presence of administrative obstacles, unsettled issues of financing and lending, low level of state financial support, underdeveloped infrastructure supporting entrepreneurship, etc. Currently, to these reasons added the negative consequences of Russia’s full-scale aggression. Such an effective tool as state support helps small and medium-sized enterprises overcome the consequences of the war and develop their activities in the post-war period. Therefore, strengthening the state support for small and mediumsized enterprises and improving the mechanism of its provision is an extremely urgent issue for our state The activity of small and medium-sized enterprises is very important for the economy of Ukraine. In wartime, their effective activity contributes to increasing budget revenues and reducing unemployment, and in the post-war period should become the very lever that will accelerate the growth of the economy and the reconstruction of the country. However, the Economic Code of Ukraine contains regulations on state support and protection of all economic entities. and support of small and medium-sized enterprises is not the state’s priorities Conclusions and prospects for the development Small and medium-sized enterprises play a significant role in the economy of Ukraine. In wartime, their effective activity contributes to the increase of revenues to the budget and the reduction of unemployment, and in the postwar period, it should become the very lever that will accelerate the growth of the economy and the reconstruction of the country. On the other hand, the priority of state policy regarding the support and development of small and medium-sized enterprises is not fixed in the Economic Code of Ukraine, which needs to be corrected. The list of means of state regulation of economic activity contained in Article 12 of the Economic Code of Ukraine should be supplemented by such an institution of economic law as state support for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Résumé :
The article focuses on the fact that contribution of enterprises and organizations of the segment of small and medium-sized enterprises to the creation of GDP does not exceed 21.9% in Russia. Entrepreneurial activity remains below the global average, and only 2.9% of the active population show interest in starting their own business, whose involvement in small business in our country is 1.5, 2 and 3 times lower than similar indicators in China, the EU and the United States. Conditions for business development are largely determined by the availability of funding sources. It is shown that one of the problems of small and medium-sized business market segment development is weak availability of bank credit resources. The actual absence of alternative financial sources for small and medium-sized enterprises to bank lending creates serious risks for the economy. The intensification of the use of exchange-traded instruments to finance small and medium-sized business enterprises is very important. The national project “Small and Medium-sized Entrepreneurship and Support of Individual Entrepreneurial Initiative”, the Roadmap of the Bank of Russia for the development of small and medium-sized entrepreneurship financing, the creation of the exchange segment “Growth Sector” on the Moscow exchange, guarantees and sureties of the Small and Medium-sized Entrepreneurship Corporation should implement an effective mechanism to stimulate the entry of business enterprises into the stock market. It has been stated that there remains a set of unresolved problems hindering the achievement of this goal. In order to overcome them, there have been proposed a number of additional measures for the successful implementation of the conditions created for small and medium-sized enterprises to enter the corporate bond market

Résumé :
Abstract Involvement and development of the private sector in boosting the economy nationwide is a main objective of the current program of the government, which means that a good cooperation between small and medium companies, private companies and multinationals and public environment including both public institutions and policies implemented and developed by them, becomes more than necessary. The paper summarizes the findings of a quantitative research based on a self-applied questionnaire which was aimed at Romanian small and medium-sized enterprises and also of a qualitative research that gives an overview of the process of elaborating and implementing a public policy. The involvement of small and medium-sized enterprises in the process of designing and implementing a public policy can become indispensable but it is well know that there is, in fact, a lack of initiative at this level, from both parties. One of the main research questions of this paper is to find out how much do representatives of small and medium-sized enterprises get involved in the process of elaborating a public policy and how much do these actions and measures impact the organizational policies of the companies themselves. A good cooperation between the business environment and the public institutions and a strong correlation of their joint efforts, should become a common practice between both parties, being crucial that this form of cooperation to be initiated from the very beginning. The contribution of this paper is a practical one, given the fact that the paper itself entails the direct responses of small and medium-sized enterprises on the current and future public policies that directly targets them, providing as well an analysis on the effects of public policies on small and medium-sized enterprises. Thus being said, the paper can also be a guide for both small and medium-sized enterprises in providing examples and measures of involvement and favorable public policies development, but also for public institutions by analyzing responses based on practice activities of small and medium-sized enterprises; giving them a solution to correct or continue generating positive results of those policies.

Résumé :
E-commerce (EC) success and related influencing factors have not been investigated properly in the context of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), while these businesses possess very different characteristics as compared to large businesses. The purpose of this study is to provide a better and clearer understanding of business-to-business (B2B) EC value and success within SMEs, particularly in emerging economies. Rooted in the information system (IS) diffusion and success literature and organizational research background, this paper develops an integrative research model to assess the success of B2B EC among Iranian and Malaysian SMEs. To interpret the success of B2B EC, we viewed EC success dimensions and relevant determinants from the perspectives of all users at the business network unit level. The result of testing this model on 130 business network units revealed that in addition to technological characteristics of EC including information, system and service quality, different SME-related organizational determinants such as perceived usefulness of EC, top management support and commitment and EC knowledge are crucial for successful B2B EC among SMEs. The findings offer valuable insights to managers, EC/IS experts and policy makers responsible for assisting SMEs with successfully engaging in B2B EC.

Résumé :
The national goals and strategic objectives of the development of the Russian Feder- ation imply the dynamic growth of small and medium-sized businesses, but its cur- rent state raises certain concerns. In these conditions, it is necessary to search and analyze new forms of work, including cluster integration. The purpose of the work is to study the potential of the cluster organization of small and medium-sized busi- nesses and analyze the features of the functioning of modern business clusters in Russia. As a result, it was found that in a number of countries there are clusters that include only small and medium-sized enterprises. Such clusters can create a single value chain and compete in the global market. At the same time, even a partial mani- festation of cluster effects has a positive effect on entrepreneurial activity. To a cer- tain extent, similar trends are taking place in Russia. However, clusters of small and medium-sized enterprises in the domestic economy are poorly studied and are rarely formalized. An analysis of Russian clusters of small and medium-sized enterprises with an institutionally fixed status showed that their creation often depends on a sub- jective factor. More often this is resorted to by non-resource regions that need new points of growth. Clusters of small and medium-sized enterprises are very unevenly distributed over the territory of Russia, and this is due to the large number of ―hid- den‖ clusters. Tourism and information technology prevail among the types of eco- nomic activities. This can be explained by the ubiquitous spread of entrepreneurial structures of the corresponding profile. The period of operation of the cluster has no statistically significant relationships with the total number of employees and the av- erage number of employees per enterprise. Consequently, further in-depth studies of the problems and features of the functioning of such clusters, including unofficial ones, are required.

Résumé :
The Industry 4.0 era has resulted in several opportunities and challenges for the manufacturing industry and for small and medium-sized enterprises (SME); technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Virtual Reality (VR) or Cloud Computing are changing business structures in profound ways. A literature review shows that most large-sized enterprises have rolled out investment plans, some of which are reviewed during this research and show that Industry 4.0 investments in such companies exceed the turnover of SMEs in all cases (<€50 million), which makes access to those technologies by SMEs very difficult. The research has also identified two gaps: firstly, the recent literature review fails to address the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies in SMEs from a practical viewpoint; secondly, the few existing roadmaps for the implementation of Industry 4.0 lack a focus on SMEs. Furthermore, SMEs do not have the resources to select suitable technologies or create the right strategy, and they do not have the means to be fully supported by consultancies. To this end, a simple six-step roadmap is proposed that includes real implementations of Industry 4.0 in SMEs. Our results show that implementing Industry 4.0 solutions following the proposed roadmap helps SMEs to select appropriate technologies. In addition, the practical examples shown across this work demonstrate that SMEs can access several Industry 4.0 technologies with low-cost investments.

Cloud computing has played a strong role in promoting the accounting informatization of small and medium-sized enterprises, which is helpful to accelerate the construction of accounting informatization. In order to improve the accounting informatization construction effect of small and medium-sized enterprises, this paper proposes an improved ISCA accounting informatization model based on cloud computing and proposes a semisupervised clustering method of accounting information based on the minimum prototype cluster to classify accounting information. Moreover, this paper uses labeled samples to measure the compactness and purity of clusters and guide the splitting of clusters and constructs a corresponding intelligent model structure. The research shows that the improved ISCA model proposed in this paper has a very obvious effect on the improvement of application of accounting informatization in small- and medium-sized enterprises in the cloud computing environment.

Abstract The supply risk analysis process in small and medium enterprises The identification and evaluation of risk, especially in small and medium enterprises - has been a topic of examination by scientists from the very beginning. Expenditure connected with the implementation and proper execution of risk measurement methods is also of prominent importance. Every organization must face risk during its operation. Quick identification and effective evaluation of its level makes it possible to maintain fluidity of activities on the market at a constant level. In the majority of cases, such processes are not formalized and they take place intuitively. Implementation of a formalized process of risk analysis is beneficial for companies, especially in the field of business decision making. The aim of this paper is to present the process of risk analysis in an exemple company and to present possibilities for its implementation in small and medium enterprises.

Résumé :
At the beginning of the 21st century it can be seen that social-economic and environmental problems have become so complex that to solve or handle them a more efficient and global knowledge is needed. Due to of this situation - and pressure of social – economic development – in developed societies the unfolding knowledge industry (knowledge business) has become separated and a dynamic growing production – supply sector. Traditional management concentrates on tangible tools, but knowledge management prefers intangible areas, such as learning and knowledge. This shows that to measure and analyze intellectual resources efficiently is not a trivial task. Globalization, decreasing life cycles, the role of knowledge in R&D (research and development) result in continuously changing demands of products, suppliers and processes which all demand to renew application procedures (for example demand of innovation). On the basis of these ideas further questions can be put. How can Hungarian small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) meet the demands of the new economy? How is knowledge creation, sharing, altogether knowledge management, used in everyday life? How can a company help individual and organizational learning? This two - year research has tried to find answers to these questions. In the research qualitative and quantitative techniques were used. In the course of investigations of the possibilities of SMEs breaking free, organizational knowledge was examined from 3 different viewpoints: intellectual capital, knowledge investigation, knowledge strategy. The results were verified from the view of secondary innovation. There are very important roles of SMEs, especially the ones based on knowledge and on human capital. This paper shows a small but stressed segment of the results. Key words: innovation, knowledge, knowledge management, SME, strategy.

The development of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia requires support from the Indonesian government at all levels, beginning with the village government. This assistance can only be provided in an effective manner if the governing body of the village is comprised of village officials who possess a strong and dependable work ethic. In order to accomplish this objective, the apparatus of the village will require management of its human resources. This study's objective is to investigate the evolution of village apparatus human resource management and its bearing on the expansion of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia. This investigation takes a qualitative approach and makes use of descriptive research methods. According to the findings of the study, village apparatuses have the potential to advance micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) by reforming the bureaucracy in the village with human resource management. The process entails planning, recruitment, selection, training and development, as well as performance evaluation and evaluation of progress. Regarding the development of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), the local government of the village can act as a facilitator, a regulator, or a catalyst, each of which has a very significant influence.

Résumé :
In this paper, we deal with several areas, one of which is the current and important topic of sustainability. We focus on the defined area of sustainability in society and in companies. Sustainability is also a very important requirement for businesses today, including small- and medium-sized enterprises. Based on two hypotheses established by us, we identified, analyzed, and evaluated research carried out in the past in the Slovak Republic and in small- and medium-sized Slovak enterprises in the field of sustainability. The second important area that we deal with in our article is the quality of the products. Product quality is considered a necessity on the market today, a matter of course in today’s global market economy since it is one of the decisive parameters of the product. At the same time, quality management is only a means to an end, and that goal is a quality product for a customer who meets his requirements. Additionally, a quality product must also meet the requirements of other stakeholders, such as legislation. Practical and functional application of quality management in practice, companies, and organizations are implemented according to certain basic proven approaches, principles, standards, principles, and methods. Small- and medium-sized enterprises are a key part of every national economy; they form the national economic “backbone”. Due to their importance, they still need to be paid attention to, so we focus on these types of enterprises on several topics.

Résumé :
Purpose – Model finance-seeking behaviour and outcomes by Australian small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) using firm-level panel data. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach – Using firm-level three-year panel data for more than 2,000 SMEs from the Business Longitudinal Database compiled by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the authors estimate separate models for the seeking of finance (debt and/or equity) and the outcomes of finance seeking (successful or unsuccessful). Key explanatory variables include declared business focus (on financial, cost, operational, quality, innovation, and human resource measures), presence of business plans and other documentation related to successful finance seeking, innovation, indicators for family and foreign-owned businesses, and profitability. Control variables include sales, the number of employees, length of operations, export and import activity, government financial assistance, and industry classification. Findings – Business objectives together with a large number of firm-level characteristics, including firm age, size, industry and sales, profits, growth and exports, significantly affect both finance-seeking behaviour and outcomes. The authors find evidence that the pecking-order and agency cost theories of capital structure at least partly explain the financial behaviour of Australian SMEs. Research limitations/implications – Several of the responses in the underlying survey data are qualitative so the authors are unable to assess how the strength of these relationships varies by the levels of sales and profitability. Practical implications – The findings show that business objectives significantly affect SME finance-seeking decisions and outcomes. SMEs that focus on profitability or growth have a strong willingness to seek additional finance; in comparison, SMEs that focus on the quality of their products or services are less likely to apply for additional finance. As only half of the SMEs in the sample considered profitability or growth to be a major business focus, core business objectives greatly affect SME financing decisions. Further, pecking-order theory not trade-off theory better explains the financial behaviour of SMEs, yielding evidence that SMEs continue to face financial constraints when pursuing growth. Some evidence also of agency cost theory in the positive effects of family ownership on debt seeking. Originality/value – One of very few studies to examine finance seeking by SMEs, especially in Australia. Further, only study known to include declared business strategy, presence of business plans and other finance-related documentation and innovation in addition to the usual focus on growth and profitability to explain financing behaviour. Very large panel of longitudinal data used to explain financial decision making over time.

Résumé :
The General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 which applies uniformly since 25th May 2018 in the European Economic Area (EEA) requires small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to respect the right to personal data protection of their clients, customers, and employees. The GDPR is designed to strengthen the data protection rights of all individuals within the EEA ensuring more effective protection for consumers and increased privacy considerations for businesses. However, even after more than four years of its entry into full application, the implementation of the GDPR is still an issue for Croatian SMEs, who, unlike the larger companies, very often lack the human and financial resources to comply with the data protection legal framework. This paper covers theoretical considerations and results of an online survey conducted with 345 SMEs in the Republic of Croatia with the aim to gain insights into their GDPR compliance hurdles. The results of the study have shown that the level of understanding of obligations arising from the GDPR among Croatian SMEs is rather low and that compliance with the data protection legal framework is not at a satisfactory level.

Résumé :
The dematerialisation of public procurement (hereinafter, e-procurement) is one of the most innovative public management initiatives in Europe today. However, according to European statistics, the acceptance of this new public procurement technique by private companies remains very limited. Furthermore, despite the existence of an abundant literature dealing with the acceptance of technology, for example, in the field of e-commerce, very few studies have addressed the field of e-procurement. The aim of this article is to analyse the latter by making a distinction between the acceptance determinants of e-procurement by small- to medium-sized enterprises, on the one hand, and by large companies, on the other. Based on several theories on the acceptance of innovation in general, and on the acceptance of technology in particular – the Technology Acceptance Model, the Innovation Diffusion Theory and the model of Iacovou et al. – we developed a model and tested it on a sample of firms. The results of the survey, covering 695 small- to medium-sized enterprises and 126 large companies in Belgium, have enabled us to identify four main factors that can account for about 33.4% of the total variability in the acceptance of e-procurement by small- to medium-sized enterprises. In addition, we have identified two factors that could account for around 28.5% of the total variability of e-procurement acceptance by large firms. Points for practitioners Our study was able to account for about 33.4% of the total variability of e-procurement acceptance by small- to medium-sized enterprises and 28.5% by large companies. Identifying the determinants of this acceptance by distinguishing between small- to medium-sized enterprises and large companies can help decision-makers at the political and administrative level to develop a more effective action plan to promote the adoption of this new procurement technology, and thus to make the most of the benefits expected from it.

Résumé :
Small and medium-sized entrepreneurship is a specific form of conducting business processes in the economy based on the use of personal abilities of entrepreneurs based on risk and entrepreneurial initiative. It is a segment of the economic system, which provides for the organization of work and activities of various spheres of entrepreneurship, which in its totality provides innovative, systematic, independent economic activity in order to ensure the corresponding social and economic effect. Small and medium-sized entrepreneurship, by its very nature, implies rigidly deterministic restrictions on the criteria for conducting economic activity. This feature of small and medium-sized business realizes its role in maintaining a competitive environment in the conditions of a market economy. The aggregate of small and large enterprises forms the economic basis of the market economy of the region and the state as a whole. A significant part of the economy of any state is occupied by medium and small enterprises, which play a significant role in the social life of the state. By creating new jobs, they help solve the problem of unemployment and loss of skills of workers. That is, the development of these types of business helps to develop the middle class of the population [14, p.848]. Small and medium-sized enterprises exert a significant influence on the saturation of the market with the necessary consumer goods at both the quantitative and qualitative levels, which, of course, contributes to the development of NTP. The activities of such enterprises lead to the creation of additional jobs, and therefore improve the overall socio-economic situation of the country or a separate region and contribute to the solution of many other pressing social problems. The priority direction of the development of economically successful states has always been the comprehensive support of small and medium-sized businesses, in particular, the development of legal frameworks for promoting their export activities. For Ukraine, the development of export potential in the segment of small and medium-sized enterprises is extremely important, which requires revision and constant improvement of national legal mechanisms for promoting export activity, implementation of the best international experience. It is very important to identify the main influencing factors of supply chain finance risk of small and medium-sized energy enterprises, analyze its action mechanism, and build the influencing factor system for this enterprise's supply chain finance risk management. First, based on the status of SMEs, financing assets, and supply chain operation, this paper analyzes the influencing factors of supply chain financial risk; This paper uses the interpretative structural model (ISM) method to establish the interaction between 17 risk factors, and finally uses the cross-influence matrix multiplication (MICMAC) analysis to classify these risk variables. Finally, the results showed that: Small and medium-sized enterprise operation ability, profitability, development ability, supply chain production performance, accounts receivable characteristics, product quality competitiveness of the driving power is low, and strong dependence power, which is an important cause of supply chain finance risk; Enterprise scale, innovation ability, credit quality, debt paying ability and supply chain cooperation degree have strong driving power and weak dependence power, which are the most fundamental factors that constitute supply chain financial risk.

Résumé :
The goal of the business should reflect its efforts to achieve a certain future state. Classical economic theories emphasize the achievement of profit as a fundamental goal of business. Modern theories consider gaining profit as one of the basic motivating factors. In practice, we distinguish several profit categories that are described in our contribution. The effort of businesses is detection of indicators that help enterprises to generate profit. In our contribution, we focused on the analysis of the profitability of small and medium-sized enterprises as well as on the identification of indicators that significantly influence the rate of profit. In our research we worked with a sample of 9,500 Slovak small and medium-sized enterprises. It was primarily a limited liability company with domestic ownership. We mainly focused on this type of businesses because many authors emphasize the irreplaceable role of small and medium-sized enterprises in countries' economies. Small and medium-sized enterprises play a very important role not only in Slovakia but also in the global economy. The significantly influence the creation of hundreds of jobs, regional development or a high percentage of GDP. Approximately 98% of enterprises in the Slovak Republic fall into the category of small and medium-sized enterprises. For their functioning, it is very important to have the capital that they inevitably need, either for the start of business as such, for development. However, these type of businesses does not always have easy access to financing, especially in the case of bank loan financing. Profit for SMEs is a very important internal source of funding. The aim of our paper is profit analysis and identification of the main profit-taking indicators. The analysis of the profitability was conducted by using methods of descriptive statistics. Based on the studied literature, we selected individual profit categories as basic indicators of profitability as well as selected indicators of profitability that are defined below. Pearson's correlation coefficient and the one-way ANOVA were used to examine the relationship between the selected indicators and achieved profit. Résumé :
AbstractSmall and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have a major advantage over larger organisations in regard to addressing sustainability issues – their size means they are able to react very quickly to changes in the business environment. They are disadvantaged, however, by lack of information on marketplace changes that make sustainability an opportunity to innovate, and to inspire employees. While some SMEs are leaders in sustainable practices, others lack the sort of strategic mindset which views changes in the business environment as opportunities – seeing the tasks which require more change as an additional burden, rather than a source of potential advantage. The National Centre for Sustainability has worked with a group of SMEs (with sponsorship through a Research Agreement with Sensis) in a series of workshop environments. Through this work a set of indicators was developed to measure their progress towards more sustainable practices. Key members of industry associations and government agencies were engaged in an advisory capacity to ensure that the work undertaken was relevant and innovative. In addition, a comprehensive industry research study was undertaken to determine the key priorities for business and government relating to sustainability. This work provided insight into the needs and trends in sustainable practices in various sectors including manufacturing, service industry, education and government. The outcomes of the research have determined the need to develop flexible, adult centric and work-based learning models to educate for sustainability and create organisational change. This paper explores the value of innovative and engaging educational practices to create an environment which is most conducive to facilitating the implementation of economic, environmental and social aspects ofwork practices.

We have created a questionnaire in order to get relevant data from SMEs in North Kosovo and to assess the shortcomings of the system of financing. Results show that access to finance in North Kosovo is extremely limited. Entrepreneurs and SMEs are usually financed with own resources and with a help from friends or family, while the bank loans are not frequent and are very expensive.

Résumé :
Purpose – Recent literature emphasizes the application of lean manufacturing practices to food processing industries in order to improve operational efficiency and productivity. Only a very limited number of studies have focused on the implementation of lean manufacturing practices within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in the food sector. The majority of these studies used the case study method and concentrated on individual lean manufacturing techniques geared towards resolving efficiency issues. This paper aims to analyze the status of the lean manufacturing practices and their benefits and barriers among European food processing SMEs. Design/methodology/approach – A structured questionnaire was developed to collect data. A total of 35 SMEs' representatives, mostly CEOs and operations managers, participated in the survey. The study investigated the role of two control variables in lean implementation: size of the company and country of origin. Findings – The findings show that lean manufacturing practice deployment in food processing SMEs is generally low and still evolving. However, some lean manufacturing practices are more prevalent than others; e.g. flow, pull and statistical process control are not widely used by the food processing SMEs, whereas total productive maintenance, employee involvement, and customer association are more widespread. The key barriers encountered by food SMEs in the implementation of lean manufacturing practices result from the special characteristics of the food sector, such as highly perishable products, complicated processing, extremely variable raw materials, recipes and unpredictable demand. In addition, lack of knowledge and resources makes it difficult for food processing SMEs to embark on the lean journey. Originality/value – The gap in the literature regarding the application of lean manufacturing in the food sector is identified and addressed in this study. The originality of this paper lies in analyzing the current status of the use of lean manufacturing practices among food SMEs in Europe and identifying potential barriers.

Résumé :
The outsourcing of human resources has increased in recent years. As in other fields of management research, limited knowledge is available on outsourcing in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The aim of this paper is to present a study on the outsourcing of human resources in Icelandic service SMEs in the period 2009–2018. Surveys were used to gather information on outsourcing, with the participation of 802 firms. The results show that three out of four firms have outsourced some activities, while only 21% have formulated a formal strategy for outsourcing. The main motives for outsourcing are accessing expertise and simplifying operations. Cost reduction comes in third place. SMEs tend to outsource human resources on a very limited scale, while 50% of firms outsource information technology and 39% outsource security services. Larger firms outsource human resources on a larger scale than smaller firms. Managers in companies that outsource human resources are more satisfied with many aspects of outsourcing compared to those managers who do not outsource those resources. Firms that outsource human resources also realise more actual cost reduction. Outsourcing in SMEs has little impact on employment, as 3% of firms lay off staff and 6% transfer staff to vendors. Larger firms and firms that outsource human resources are more likely to change their staff’s employment status after outsourcing.

Résumé :
Purpose This paper aims to explore informal learning experiences among employees working in South Korean small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with fewer than 100 employees. This study specifically seeks to understand the characteristics of informal learning in Korean SMEs and culturally sensitive contextual factors that shape informal learning. Design/methodology/approach To understand the complex, holistic nature of the phenomenon, the current study used a phenomenological qualitative approach. Eighteen full-time employees working at South Korean SMEs in knowledge-intensive industries were interviewed. Data were analyzed using Moustakas’s phenomenological analysis. Findings The findings emerged from the field data revealed four characteristics of informal learning in South Korean SMEs: absolute reliance on informal learning; rapid/immediate learning and application; relationship/client needs-based learning; and extensive trial and error. The current study also identified South Korean SMEs’ unique organizational context (i.e. a family-like atmosphere, one employee-multiple tasks, passive investment in employees and the absence of systems) and Korean culture (i.e. Gab-Eul relations and chemyon) that drive the emergence of SMEs’ informal learning characteristics. Originality/value Very little empirical research has been conducted to explain how informal learning actually occurs and why such learning patterns have emerged in South Korean SMEs. The findings of this study have a profound impact on practice and academia, as it unveils characteristics of informal learning in SMEs, the unique cultural context in which Korean SMEs operate and how these characteristics impact the learning process.
