Résumé :
The aim of this paper is to prove that, through a canonic approach, sinusoidal oscillators based on second-generation voltage conveyor (VCII) can be implemented. The investigation demonstrates the feasibility of the design results in a pair of new canonic oscillators based on negative type VCII (VCII−). Interestingly, the same analysis shows that no canonic oscillator configuration can be achieved using positive type VCII (VCII+), since a single VCII+ does not present the correct port conditions to implement such a device. From this analysis, it comes about that, for 5-node networks, the two presented oscillator configurations are the only possible ones and make use of two resistors, two capacitors and a single VCII−. Notably, the produced sinusoidal output signal is easily available through the low output impedance Z port of VCII, removing the need for additional voltage buffer for practical use, which is one of the main limitations of the current mode (CM) approach. The presented theory is substantiated by both LTSpice simulations and measurement results using the commercially available AD844 from Analog Devices, the latter being in a close agreement with the theory. Moreover, low values of THD are given for a wide frequency range.

Résumé :
This study reviews second-generation voltage conveyor (VCII)-based read-out circuits for sensors and bioelectrical signal conditioning from existing literature. VCII is the dual circuit of a second-generation current conveyor (CCII), which provides the possibility of processing signals in the current domain while providing output signals in the voltage form. The scope of this paper is to discuss the benefits and opportunities of new VCII-based read-out circuits over traditional ones and bioelectrical signals. The achieved main benefits compared to conventional circuits are the simpler read-out circuits, producing an output signal in a voltage form that can be directly used, improved accuracy, possibility of gain adjustment using a single grounded resistor, and the possibility of connecting several SiPM sensors to the readout circuit. The circuits studied in this paper include VCII- based read-out circuits suitable for all types of sensors configured in the current-mode Wheatstone bridge (CMWB) topology, the VCII-based read-out circuits solutions reported for silicon photomultiplier, spiral-shaped ultrasonic PVDF and differential capacitive sensors, and, finally, a simple readout circuitry for sensing bioelectrical signals. There are still not many VCII-based readout circuits, and we hope that the outcome of this study will enhance this area of research and inspire new ideas.

Résumé :
In the presented research, the second-generation voltage conveyor (VCII) is used in the design of active capacitance multipliers. In this paper, three positive and one negative lossless grounded capacitance multipliers (GCMs) are designed. All of these GCMs are designed using two VCIIs, one capacitor, and two resistors. There is no need for any passive component matching to implement a GCM. The multiplication factor of GCMs can be set/varied by changing the values of two resistances as per requirement. Considering nonideal constraints, GCMs are analysed mathematically to evaluate the effect of nonideal current and voltage transfer gains on the performance of the proposed GCMs. Also, parasitic analysis is conducted to study the effect of VCII node impedance on the performance of the presented GCMs. The simulation analysis is performed using Cadence Virtuoso in 0.18 µm Silterra Malaysia process design kit (PDK). Additionally, the macro-model of commercially available integrated circuit, AD844, is used to design the proposed GCM-2 to further prove the theoretical findings.

Résumé :
In this paper, a new implementation of an electronically tunable resistor-less floating inductance simulator using a second-generation voltage conveyor (VCII) is presented. The proposed circuit is resistor-free (benefiting from the intrinsic resistors at the Y terminals of the employed VCIIs) and composed of three VCIIs and a single grounded capacitor. Using a control current (Icon), the value of impedance at the Y terminal of the VCII is varied, whereby the value of the simulated inductance is tuned. The proposed circuit is designed at a transistor level using 0.18 µm TSMC CMOS parameters and ±0.9 V supply voltage. PSpice simulations are carried out to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed circuit. For a range of Icon from 0 µA to 50 µA, the value of the simulated L can be varied from −576 µH to −324 µH and from +316 µH to +576 µH for negative and positive simulators, respectively, in the frequency range of 100 kHz–3 MHz. Favorably, the value of the series resistance remains below 76 Ω. Simulation results show an error value below 4.8% and power consumption variation is from 1.64 mW to 1.92 mW. Moreover, application of the proposed circuit as a standard band-pass RLC filter is also included.

Résumé :
In this paper, a novel low voltage low power CMOS second generation voltage conveyor (VCII) with an improved voltage range at both the X and Z terminals is presented. The proposed VCII is formed by a current buffer based on a class AB regulated common-gate stage and a modified rail-to-rail voltage buffer. Spice simulation results using LFoundry 0.15 μm low-Vth CMOS technology with a ±0.9 V supply voltage are provided to demonstrate the validity of the designed circuit. Thanks to the class AB behavior, from a bias current of 10 µA, the proposed VCII is capable of driving 0.5 mA on the X terminal, with a total power consumption of 120 µW. The allowed voltage swing on the Z terminal is at least equal to ±0.83 V, while on the X terminals it is ±0.72 V. Both DC and AC voltage and current gains are provided, and time domain simulations, where the voltage conveyor is used as a transimpedance amplifier (TIA), are also presented. A final table that summarizes the main features of the circuit, comparing them with the literature, is also given.

Résumé :
In this paper, a new low-voltage low-power dual-mode universal filter is presented. The proposed circuit is implemented using inverting current buffer (I-CB) and second-generation voltage conveyors (VCIIs) as active building blocks and five resistors and three capacitors as passive elements. The circuit is in single-input multiple-output (SIMO) structure and can produce second-order high-pass (HP), band-pass (BP), low-pass (LP), all-pass (AP), and band-stop (BS) transfer functions. The outputs are available as voltage signals at low impedance Z ports of the VCII. The HP, BP, AP, and BS outputs are also produced in the form of current signals at high impedance X ports of the VCIIs. In addition, the AP and BS outputs are also available in inverting type. The proposed circuit enjoys a dual-mode operation and, based on the application, the input signal can be either current or voltage. It is worth mentioning that the proposed filter does not require any component matching constraint and all sensitivities are low, moreover it can be easily cascadable. The simulation results using 0.18 μm CMOS technology parameters at a supply voltage of ±0.9 V are provided to support the presented theory.

Résumé :
In this paper, the implementation of a low-voltage class AB second generation voltage conveyor (VCII) with high current drive capability is presented. Simple realization and good overall performance are the main features of the proposed circuit. Proper solutions and techniques were used to achieve high signal swing and high linearity at Y, X and Z ports of VCII as well as low-voltage operation. The operation of the proposed VCII was verified through SPICE simulations based on TSMC 0.18 µm CMOS technology parameters and a supply voltage of ±0.9 V. The small signal impedance values were 973 Ω, 120 kΩ and 217 Ω at Y, X and Z ports, respectively. The maximum current at the X port was ±10 mA with maximum total harmonic distortion (THD) of 2.4% at a frequency of 1 MHz. Considering a bias current (IB) of 29 µA and output current at the X port (IX) of 10 mA, the current drive capability (IX/IB) of about 345 was achieved at the X port. The voltage swing at the Z port was (−0.4, 0.4) V. The THD value at the Z port for an input signal with 0.8 V peak-to-peak value and frequency of 1 MHz was 3.9%. The total power consumption was 0.393 µW.

Résumé :
In this paper, a novel approach to implement a stray insensitive CMOS interface for differential capacitive sensors is presented. The proposed circuit employs, for the first time, second-generation voltage conveyors (VCIIs) and produces an output voltage proportional to differential capacitor changes. Using VCIIs as active devices inherently allows the circuit to process the signal in the current domain, and hence, to benefit from its intrinsic advantages, such as high speed and simple implementation, while still being able to natively interface with voltage mode signal processing stages at necessity. The insensitiveness to the effects of parasitic capacitances is achieved through a simple feedback loop. In addition, the proposed circuit shows a very simple and switch-free structure (which can be used for both linear and hyperbolic sensors), improving its accuracy. The readout circuit was designed in a standard 0.35 μm CMOS technology under a supply voltage of ±1.65 V. Before the integrated circuit fabrication, to produce tangible proof of the effectiveness of the proposed architecture, a discrete version of the circuit was also prototyped using AD844 and LF411 to implement a discrete VCII. The achieved measurement results are in good agreement with theory and simulations, showing a constant sensitivity up to 412 mV/pF, a maximum linearity error of 1.9%FS, and acknowledging a good behavior with low baseline capacitive sensors (10 pF in the proposed measurements). A final table is also given to summarize the key specs of the proposed work comparing them to the available literature.

Résumé :
Chemokines (chemotactic cytokines) comprise a large family of proteins that recruit and activate leukocytes, giving chemokines a major role in both immune response and inflammation-related diseases. Viral CC chemokine inhibitor (vCCI) is a poxvirus encoded protein that has been shown to bind tightly and inhibit the action of many CC chemokines. This function suggests that vCCI could be explored as an antiinflammatory therapeutic, a possibility that has been supported in mouse studies. The structure of vCCI in unbound form was determined by others, but to date no structure has been reported of bound vCCI. We report the NMR structure of vCCI in complex with the human CC chemokine MIP-1[beta]. The non-aggregating MIP-1[beta] variant MIP-1[beta] 45AASA48 was used in this complex to allow sufficiently high concentration at pH 7 to carry out the solution structure determination. A combination of NOE distance restraints, torsion angle restraints, and residual dipolar coupling were used to determine the structure of the complex, which also required protein deuteration due to its relatively large size (34kDa). The structure shows that MIP-1[beta] binds to vCCI with 1:1 stoichiometry, forming a complex of 311 amino acids. vCCI uses residues from its [beta]- sheet II to interact with a surface of MIP-1[beta] that includes residues adjacent to its Nterminus, as well as residues in the 20's region, and the 40's loop. The structure of the MIP-1[beta]-vCCI complex reveals for the first time the regions of each protein involved in the interaction, and allows a greater understanding of the strategy used by vCCI to tightly bind numerous chemokines, while retaining selectivity for the CC chemokine subfamily.

Résumé :
The deregulation of electricity market created a competitive market environment. For Distribution companies (DISCOs), how to maximize its profit is the primary purpose of this planning and operations. Therefore, to achieve the best economic and technical benefits, a DISCOs should determine where and how much DG units allow to install in the system. Distributed generation is a key component in the power market. There is a brief introduction of DG in this thesis including: the definition of DG, size and several often used DG types. The benefit and risk of DG which may bring to the power system also have been appropriately evaluated in this study. The review of literature of optimal size and location of DG in distribution system have shown that a number of economic and technical impacts have been considered in DG planning. The selection of the best places and the preferable size of DG units for installation in the distribution system is a complex combinatorial optimization problem. The various solution techniques along with various objective function and constraints for the optimal solution of the problem of size and location problem of DG are discussed and compared in this work. With the increasing of load demand, distributed generation becomes an attractive alternative method to supply the power in the distribution system. DG can not only help to defer the T&D investment but also bring benefits to environment protection. The technical benefit which can bring to the distribution system also cannot be ignored. Such as power loss reduction, voltage profile and power quality improvement. The impact of DG units on voltage stability has become significant. A review of the indices refers to voltage stability has been shown in this work and an index named voltage collapse proximity index (VCPI) was introduced and used in this work. This study proposed a planning framework for effective planning of DG units in the distribution system due to minimize total cost and enhance the voltage stability of the system. To achieve the purpose of minimizing the total cost and maximize the technical benefit of DG units to voltage stability, a multi-objective methodology to decide optimal locations and size of DG units. The total cost in the proposed planning model includes investment cost, operation and maintenance cost except the revenue from the utility grid. VCPI which is given in this study have been used in this model to identify the voltage stability of this system. The uncertainties associated with the load value, and generated power of renewable energy DG units also take a part in this study. A Monte Carlo simulation method has been introduced in this work to calculate the uncertainty because of probabilistic nature of renewable DG unit (WTs, PVs). The Pareto optimal set is found by using non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm method and the final result is chosen by using the max-min method. An IEEE 33-bus distribution system with DG installation has been used to achieve the goals of minimum total cost and improvement of voltage stability.

Résumé :
Cerebrovascular disease is a major cause of dementia in elderly individuals, especially Black/African Americans. Within my dissertation, we focused on two vascular morphologies that affect small vessels: brain arteriolosclerosis (B-ASC) and multi-vascular profiles (MVPs). B-ASC is characterized by degenerative thickening of the wall of brain arterioles. The risk factors, cognitive sequelae, and co-pathologies of B-ASC are not fully understood. To address this, we used multimodal data from the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center, Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, and brain-banked tissue samples from the University of Kentucky Alzheimer’s Disease Center (UK-ADC) brain repository. We analyzed two age at death groups separately: < 80 years and ≥ 80 years. Hypertension was a risk factor in the < 80 years at death group. In addition, an ABCC9 gene variant (rs704180), previously associated with aging-related hippocampal sclerosis, was associated with B-ASC in the ≥ 80 years at death group. With respect to cognition as determined by test scores, severe B-ASC was associated with worse global cognition in both age groups. With brain-banked tissue samples, we described B-ASC’s relationship to hippocampal sclerosis of aging (HS-Aging), a pathology characterized by neuronal cell loss in the hippocampal region not due to Alzheimer’s disease. We also studied MVPs, which are characterized by multiple small vessel lumens within a single vascular (Virchow-Robin) space. Little information exists on the frequency, risk factors, and co-pathologies of MVPs. Therefore, we used samples and data from the UK-ADC, University of Kentucky pathology department, and University of Pittsburgh pathology department to address this information. We only found MVPs to be correlated with age. Lastly, given the high prevalence of cerebrovascular disease and dementia in Black/African Americans, we discussed the challenges and considerations for studying Blacks/African Americans in these contexts.

Résumé :

Background: Around the world, markets deregulates, which leads to increased competition. Meetings between the consumer and the employees of a company determine how the customer perceives the company and / or its brand. This has result in that many companies have realized the importance of internal using the same marketing skills that are used externally. In 2009, pharmacy market went from being a monopoly market to be a regulated competitive market.

Problem: Is there any internal conditions for a private company, whose culture and structure was formed under a state monopoly, to create a strong corporate brand?

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to, through a case study, analyze and evaluate the internal marketing in a company which has undergone a change of ownership and retained the same staff.

Method: Through interviews with key personnel and staff , data was gathered for the case study, which means that the method is qualitative. Only one of the company's pharmacies has been included in the study.

Conclusions: The authors of this paper perceive that company has the required internal conditions to create a strong corporate brand, since the company i.e. has taken into consideration the history of the pharmacy staff, the management shows a personal commitment, campaigns are communicated internally, staff and customers consciously or unconsciously may be involved in shaping the content of the corporate brand, and that dialogue exists between staff and management so that management can have an understanding of how staff perceive the company's vision and corporate brand, which in turn leads the company to form a brand that staff can accept and understand because their norms and values has been taken into consideration.

Résumé :
Soil-side corrosion control is a major challenge for Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) operators. Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors (VCIs) are increasingly being used as an additional corrosion control mitigation tool. A PRCI-sponsored Phase 1 study established baseline performance and evaluated monitoring methods for the VCIs. One focus of this study included VCIs' performance comparison with effective cathodic protection (CP) systems. The investigation concluded that VCIs' corrosion mitigation performance is equivalent to that of an effective CP system. This study also evaluated tank bottom corrosion monitoring tools, investigated VCIs' migration behavior, determined VCIs performance in the presence of high levels of chlorides and bacterial activity, and evaluated VCI delivery methods considering tank pad conditions. This study concluded that mass-loss coupons installed a few inches below the tank bottom generally agree with tank floor inspection data, thus either bonded or unbonded mass-loss coupons could be used as one of the corrosion monitoring tools to assess tank pad corrosivity. The experimental work on VCI migration showed that VCIs migrate quickly through a sand environment. Thus, VCIs should provide corrosion mitigation coverage to an AST tank bottom soon after their delivery. The experimental work also showed that VCI performance is robust and not compromised in the presence of either high chloride levels or bacterial activity. Finally, the through-the-floor VCI delivery method is more efficient compared to the through-the-sandpad when tank pad corrosivity is elevated. Related webinar

Résumé :
Soil side corrosion of the above ground storage tanks bottoms is a major challenge for the midstream operators owning tanks farms. In North America subcontinent, a large fraction of tanks are installed with an active cathodic protection (CP) system to protect the tank bottom from corrosion. However, CP systems could fail, and sometime even with the CP system, corrosion can occur. In addition, several tanks without CP system could experience elevated corrosion including pitting corrosion. Vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) are being promoted as alternative corrosion control measures in addition to the CP. This study was conducted to determine whether the VCIs are effective in mitigating corrosion to a level comparable to a working CP for tank bottoms, what is the best way to monitor efficacy of VCIs, and whether the VCIs compatible with CP or not. Extensive amount of laboratory scale and limited field testing was conducted. Both laboratory and field data were rigorously analyzed. It was found that the VCIs are effective in mitigating corrosion when vendor specific recommended dosages are used, and the electrical-resistance based corrosion rate monitoring technique does show the effect of VCIs. Regarding VCI and CP compatibility, VCIs indirectly affect the CP as exposure of tank bottom steel to VCIs change its native potential which in turn changes the CP current demand. Overall, VCIs were found to be a viable alternative corrosion control measure.
