Résumé :

Dix ans après sa parution en 1898, le bouillon du premier volume du journal de Léon Bloy, Le Mendiant ingrat, édité par le célèbre libraire belge Edmond Deman, s’élève à 1100 exemplaires. À peine 400 exemplaires sont vendus. Craignant que le livre soit soldé, Bloy tente de récupérer quelques exemplaires. Finalement le bouillon est racheté par Alfred Vallette qui fait recouvrir les exemplaires de la couverture jaune du Mercure de France avec le millésime 1908 et remplacer le troisième feuillet du premier cahier qui comprend le titre, en gardant ainsi la justification au bas de laquelle par contrat tous les exemplaires sont signés par Bloy en 1898.

Résumé :

We define Leibniz triple systems in a functorial manner using the algorithm of Kolesnikov and Pozhidaev which converts identities for algebras into identities for dialgebras; this algorithm is a concrete realization of the white Manin product introduced by Vallette by the permutad Perm introduced by Chapoton. We verify that Leibniz triple systems are natural analogues of Lie triple systems by showing that both the iterated bracket in a Leibniz algebra and the permuted associator in a Jordan dialgebra satisfy the defining identities for Leibniz triple systems. We construct the universal Leibniz envelopes of Leibniz triple systems and prove that every identity satisfied by the iterated bracket in a Leibniz algebra is a consequence of the defining identities for Leibniz triple systems. In the last section, we present some examples of two-dimensional Leibniz triple systems and their universal Leibniz envelopes.

Marguerite Eymery-Vallette (1860-1953) – plus connue sous son pseudonyme d’homme de lettres Rachilde et davantage encore pour la controverse qu’elle a créée avec la parution de sa troisième œuvre, Monsieur Vénus, roman matérialiste (1884) – a énormément publié tout au long de sa carrière littéraire (on dénombre plus d’une soixantaine d’œuvres : romans, nouvelles, contes, pièces de théâtre, etc.). Écrivant à une époque dite décadente, Rachilde y brille par ses œuvres subversives, abordant entre autres les pratiques sexuelles dépravées (sadomasochisme, nécrophilie, zoophilie, etc.), mais surtout le crime (qu’il soit question de meurtre, de viol, de suicide, etc.). Ainsi, son personnage de prédilection est le marginal, le criminel dénué de morale. Cet article portera donc sur la façon dont le crime (et donc le criminel) chez Rachilde verse dans le fantastique, plus spécifiquement dans un fantastique du monstrueux moral que je définirai dans un premier temps. Le roman de Rachilde, Le Grand Saigneur (1922), servira ensuite d’exemple significatif de ce monstrueux moral, notamment par l’étude du personnage éponyme de l’œuvre, soit le marquis Yves de Pontcroix, qui incarne ce criminel arborant les traces tant morales (tempérament sauvage et étrange) que physiques (force hors du commun, pâleur de la peau, etc.) de sa monstruosité. C’est donc dire que face au(x) crime(x) (ou au criminel) le fantastique semble s’imposer de lui-même en guise d’explication : le genre humain ne peut vraisemblablement avoir quelque chose en commun avec cette monstruosité (ou ce monstre moral, pour reprendre les mots de Michel Foucault dans Les Anormaux). En somme, cet article se penchera sur la spécificité de l’écriture rachildienne, qui, dans le cas du roman Le Grand Saigneur, attribue une dimension fantastique au personnage criminel, renforçant d’autant plus la preuve de sa difformité (monstruosité) et de sa culpabilité.

W artykule skupiono się na zdiagnozowaniu problemów społeczno-przestrzennych Malty jako kraju wielokulturowego. Badania prowadzono w oparciu o zdefiniowanie potrzeb mieszkańców kraju oraz na analizie rozwoju społeczno-przestrzennego reprezentatywnej dla Malty – Vallety. Wnioski z badań posłużyły jako punkt wyjścia do próby wytyczenia kierunków kształtowania nowego ładu przestrzennego dla miasta. Badania prowadzono w ramach współpracy Politechniki Krakowskiej z Konsulatem Republiki Malty w Krakowie. Powstały propozycje projektowe współczesnych założeń architektoniczno-urbanistycznych w stolicy Malty uwzględniające wytyczne wynikające z wniosków z przeprowadzonych badań. Propozycje te zostały przedstawione w pracach dyplomowych magisterskich studentów drugiego stopnia kierunku Architektura na Wydziale Architektury Politechniki Krakowskiej. A Multi-Cultural City’s New Spatial Order: Valletta, Malta This paper focuses on diagnosing the socio-spatial problems of Malta as a multi-cultural country. The study was based on defining the needs of the country’s citizens and an analysis of the socio-spatial development of Valletta – as a city representative of Malta. The conclusions of this investigation served as a starting point for an attempt to formulate guidelines for shaping a new spatial order for the city. The study was performed as a part of cooperation between the Cracow University of Technology with the Consulate of the Republic of Malta in Cracow. Design proposals of contemporary architectural and urban complexes in Malta’s capital that included said guidelines were drafted. These proposals were presented in Master’s thesis projects prepared by second-cycle students of the Architecture course taught at the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology.

The National Museum – Czech Museum of Music holds an important source – a bundled collection of three printed sets of lute tablature by Nicolas Vallet, which contains parts I and II of Le Secret des Muses (1615, 1616) and the psalm collection Vingt et un pseaumes de David (1615). In our examination of graphic motifs, we focused on musical motifs worked into the decorating of initials and especially on depictions of the Biblical figure of King David with a lute, of lutenists, and of the lutes themselves. The schematic depictions of the instrument did not provide any new organological discoveries, but instead confirmed the popularity of the lute as a symbol. Vallet’s tablatures were printed from original full-page copper engraving plates and not from individual blocks, as was customary. It is also for this reason that the initials, decorated with genre pictures and Biblical scenes, have merited extraordinary attention.

This paper highlights the concepts behind the Valletta Travel Information Service (VaTIS) Project, an intelligent information system capable of harvesting data from a road pricing system using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology and low cost sensors installed throughout the city of Valletta, Malta. In this paper, we describe the different elements of VaTIS and report on the first phase of the system, which has already been implemented using data from the camera system in place in Valletta and secondary data on travel behaviour to the city. Both authors act as observers, having been involved in the design and subsequent operational procedures of the road pricing system. The initial evaluation of phase 1 shows the potential benefits of smart applications and sensors for the management of travel demand and effective use of limited infrastructure and provides opportunity for further development of such applications to include user engagement and potential behaviour change.

Abstract Valleyite, Ca4(Fe,Al)6O13, is a new sodalite-type mineral discovered in late Pleistocene basaltic scoria from the Menan Volcanic Complex near Rexburg, Idaho, U.S.A. It is an oxidation product of basaltic glass during the early stage of the scoria formation and is associated with hematite (α-Fe2O3), maghemite (γ-Fe2O3), luogufengite (ε-Fe2O3), and quartz on the surface of vesicles. The measured crystal size of valleyite ranges from ~250 to ~500 nm. The empirical chemical formula of valleyite is (Ca3.61Mg0.39)(Fe3.97Al1.91Ti0.09)O13. The mineral has a space group of I43m. The (Fe,Al)-O bond distance and unit-cell edge are slightly larger than those reported for synthetic Ca4Al6O13, presumably due to the presence of the larger Fe3+ cations, compared with Al3+, in the structure. Density functional theory calculations predict that valleyite may be a metastable phase at low temperatures. Measured Curie temperatures for valleyite and luogufengite are 645 and 519 K, respectively. Their magnetization hysteresis loop indicates the magnetic exchange coupling between valleyite (soft magnet) and luogufengite (hard magnet) that aids in the understanding of magnetic properties and paleo-magnetism of basaltic rocks. This new mineral, valleyite, with the sodalite-type cage structure is potentially a functional magnetic material.

El virrei no només va freqüentar assíduament la riquíssima biblioteca de Giuseppe Valletta, sinó que va defensar Francesco d’Andrea d’algunes acusacions injustes.Unes cartes, conservades a la seu toledana de l’Arxiu Ducal de Medinaceli i fins ara inèdites, entre el virrei, el secretari espanyol Manuel Francisco de Lira, el president del Sacre Regio Consell Feliç de Lanzina i Ulloa i el regent del Collateral Diego Sòria de Morales, són un testimoni de la difícil paràbola política de D’Andrea i destaquen el suport que li va oferir Benavides.

The sensitivity of Mycobacterium bovis, strain Vallee, №8 to the action of L-transformation of penicillin, lisozimum and their combinations was shown resulting in reduced pathogenic and sensibilizogenic properties of L-form of Mycobacterium bovis, strain Vallee in comparison with the bacterial form. The fortified city of Valletta, founded in 1566 by the Knights of Malta, is one of the few Renaissance ideal cities to be built. Planned from the beginning and constructed on virgin ground, it follows a rigid gridiron scheme designed by the Italian architect Francesco Laparelli da Cortona (1521-1570) that is an exemplar of Neoplatonic planning principles of the age of humanism and constitutes a model of modern urban design. Although the founding and development of the city has been well investigated historically, the formal essence of its urban design has not yet been examined satisfactorily from an architectural perspective. While the executed plan has been interpreted until now as an imperfect materialization of one of the four known preparatory drawings by Laparelli, in this article I suggest the possibility that the town built is a further evolutionary step in a fully traceable design process based on a coherent system of trigonometric proportions. In addition to the physical evidence of the city's current digital terrain model, the method of design proposed here is largely supported not only by sixteenth-century architectural theory (as advanced by Albrecht Dürer, Sebastiano Serlio, and Pietro Cataneo) but also historically by a group of new Florentine towns founded in the late Middle Ages that exhibit the same compositional principles.

Una vez que Jorge Oteiza definiera la estela en homenaje a Aita Donostia por encargo de la Sociedad de Ciencias Aranzadi, comenzaba el desarrollo, por parte de Luis Vallet, del proyecto arquitectónico para la capilla que iba a acompañarla. Vallet se encargó de integrar la estela, la capilla y los crómlech milenarios de Agiña, haciendo uso de la fotografía como herramienta de trabajo aplicada en todos los estadios de proyecto. Durante el proyecto, que arrancó en noviembre de 1956 y finalizó en verano de 1959, Oteiza y Vallet emplearon dos técnicas, la fotografía y el fotomontaje, y tres tipos de cámara fotográfica: una Weltaflex, una Polaroid y una Leica. Es hora de sacar a la luz los aspectos técnicos de los distintos reportajes, las influencias bajo las cuales fueron realizados y los motivos por los que optaron por una determinada técnica o cámara en cada una de las fases.

This article began life as a paper in the session ‘Opening Doors for Archaeologists: Making Malta Work’ at the 2006 EAA Annual Meeting in Kracow, Poland. It explores the background of the European Convention on the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage (Revised), also known as the Valletta Convention or the Convention of Malta. The article examines some of the major issues that were discussed and describes the drafting process of the Convention from the author's personal perspective as one of the members of the committee responsible. It concludes with a brief consideration of some subsequent developments and a plea for a more active role for the EAA at Strasbourg and Brussels.

Il contributo esamina le caratteristiche (fonologiche, morfologiche, solo marginalmente sintattiche e lessicali) del terzo dei principali dialetti istroromanzi (IR), quello della cittadina di Valle (croato Bale) nell'Istria sudoccidentale, quali esse risultano dai testi vallesi recentemente pubblicati nella Antologia delle opere premiate ai Concorsi d'arte e di cultura Istria Nobilissima (voll. XXI-XXIII e XXV, Trieste-Rovigno 1988-1990 e 1992). Si distinguono i tratti comuni a tutto l'IR da quelli specifici del vallese, e i materiali attuali vengono confrontati in modo sistematico con quelli nelle fonti anteriori (1835-1919, 1900, 1986). Il confronto permette interessanti osservazioni sincroniche e diacroniche nonché sociolinguistiche, illustrando nel contempo l'importanza dei testi studiati.Nei volumi XXI (1988), XXII (1989), XXIII (1900) e XXV (1992) dell'Antologia delle opere premiate ai Concorsi d'arte e di cultura Istria Nobilissima (v. bibliografia; d'ora in poi:Istria Nobilissima) sono apparsi alcuni testi in dialetto vallese istroromanzo (IR) (o istrioto) della cittadina di Valle (in croato Bale), tra DignanoNodnjan e Rovigno/Rovinj nell'Istria sudoccidentale.

AbstractThe Holy See became aware of the potential evangelising role of the Maltese in Ottoman lands at least from the mid-sixteenth century. This had much to do with Malta's geographical proximity to North Africa, coupled with the ability of the Maltese to speak a native Semitic language, believed to be close to Arabic, while at the same time being fervently Catholic Christians. Malta was singled out for this role mainly because the majority of Levantine Christian communities, then largely under Ottoman rule, were known to speak some form of Arabic. The combination of these factors appeared to be an excellent combination of circumstances to the Catholic Church authorities in Rome who believed that Malta was ideally suited for the teaching of Arabic. In Rome there was a general belief that the establishment of a school of Arabic in Malta, would help make the Catholic Church more accessible to the Christians of the Levant. However, despite continuous efforts, throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, by the Holy Congregation of Propaganda Fide, the teaching of Arabic never really took off in Malta. Under British colonial administration, in the early nineteenth century, Arabic remained on the list of subjects taught at the University of Malta and was later introduced at the Lyceum and the Valletta Government School. The British colonial authorities may even have encouraged its teaching and for a brief time, in the mid-nineteenth century, the well known Lebanese scholar Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq, was lecturer of Arabic at Valletta. The end of Arabic teaching during World War One coincided with the emergence of the belief, pushed by Lord Gerald Strickland, that the Maltese descended from the Phoenicians. It was believed that the Maltese had preserved ancient Phoenician, rather than Arabic, over the millennia. By associating the Maltese with the ancient Phoenicians Strickland was simply saying that the Maltese might have had Semitic origins but that did not mean they were Arabs.

AbstractThe new mineral species canosioite, ideally Ba2Fe3+(AsO4)2(OH), has been discovered in the dump of Valletta mine, Maira Valley, Cuneo Province, Piedmont, Italy. Its origin is probably related to the reaction between ore minerals and hydrothermal fluids. It occurs in reddish-brown granules, subhedral millimetre-size crystals, with a pale yellow streak and vitreous lustre. Canosioite is associated with aegirine, baryte, calcite, hematite, bronze Mn-bearing muscovite, unidentified Mn oxides and unidentified arsenates. Canosioite is biaxial (+) with a 2Vmeas= 84(2)°. It is weakly pleochroic withX= brownish yellow,Y= brown,Z= reddish brown,Z>Y>X. Canosioite is monoclinic,P21/m, witha= 7.8642(4),b= 6.1083(3),c= 9.1670(5) Å, β = 112.874(6)°,V= 405.73(4) Å3andZ= 2. Calculated density is 4.943 g cm–3. The seven strongest diffraction lines of the observed powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [din Å, (I) (hkl)]: 3.713 (18)(111), 3.304 (100)(211̄), 3.058 (31)(020), 3.047 (59)(103̄), 2.801 (73)(112), 2.337 (24)(220), 2.158 (24)(123̄). Electron microprobe analyses gave (wt.%): Na2O 0.06, MgO 0.43, CaO 0.02, NiO 0.02, CuO 0.03, SrO 0.42, BaO 49.36, PbO 1.69, Al2O31.25, Mn2O33.89, Fe2O36.95, Sb2O30.01, SiO20.03, P2O50.02, V2O510.88, As2O524.64, SO3 0.01, F 0.02, H2O1.61 was calculated on the basis of 1 (OH,F,H2O) group per formula unit. Infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of OH. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of 9 O apfu, is (Ba1.92Pb0.05Sr0.02Na0.01)∑2.00(Fe0.523+Mn0.293+Al0.15Mg0.06)∑1.02[(As0.64V0.36)∑1.00O4]2[(OH0.92F0.01)(H2O)0.07]and the ideal formula is Ba2Fe3+(AsO4)2(OH). The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and found to be isostructural to that of arsenbrackebuschite. The structure model was refined (R1= 2.6%) on the basis of 1245 observed reflections. Canosioite is named after the small municipality of Canosio, where the type locality, the Valletta mine, is situated. The new mineral and name were approved by the International Mineralogical Association Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names (IMA2015-030).

During the 1950's, Fiat, one of Italy's most important manufacturing companies, grew at enormous speed. Two factors helped the car maker achieve this impressive performance: For one, a set of import barriers virtually denied foreign producers access to the Italian market until the founding of the European Economic Community (EEC). Moreover, Fiat managed to remain at the cutting edge of car manufacturing technology, enabling it to expand production, foreign sales and profits. Combining a reliance on trade barriers with technological change as well as an aggressive export strategy, Vittorio Valletta, Fiat's post-World War II general manager, bet on serving the more dynamic foreign markets from modern plants built with the help of Marshall Plan funds. From this basis he later sold into a growing domestic market, where Fiat was without serious competition.

Résumé :

This article focuses on the development of preventive and commercial archaeology in Europe during the last thirty years by examining the case of Italy. This country has a mixed public-private system, where the law establishes that the State manages all archaeological activities, although archaeological services are provided mainly by private individuals or companies and funded by private developers. This framework leads to a mismatch between law and practice, which impedes the development of professional archaeology and the full implementation of the Valletta principles. The issue is examined from an historical perspective, from the 1970s to the present day, and is augmented by a brief analysis of the current trends in cultural heritage policy. The study concentrates on the regulatory elements of archaeological activities, since these legal matters are generally overlooked by scholars.
