Résumé :
In this work, the feasibility of energy harvesting in the useful UWB band (i.e., 3.1-10.6 GHz) is analytically investigated. A typical UWB communications/EH chain in this band is modeled and analyzed, considering the spectral constraints imposed by the federal communications commission (FCC) to UWB signaling. Based on the developed model, accurate analytical expressions are derived for the average received powers of two common types of impulse radio UWB (IR-UWB) signaling waveforms. Numerical simulations on the system-level show excellent agreement with the obtained analytical expressions. Moreover, the DC power levels expected from spectrally constrained IR-UWB waveforms are extremely low (less than 0.3 microwatt) and, accordingly, provide useful guidelines for the design and development of ULP electronics applications in the sub-microwatt range.

Résumé :
This article gives a parametric study on strawberry-shaped monopole antennas for ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. The antenna design consisted of three different parametric design steps to structure the strawberry radiated monopole antenna. The scheduled strawberry monopole antenna was simulated on an FR4 substrate in a low profile for UWB applications. The total physical dimension is 26 mm×26 mm×1.6 mm, corresponding to the centre frequency of 7.5 GHz. The strawberry antenna is fed via a coplanar waveguide (CPW) to attain the best impedance matching for UWB systems. The presented monopole antenna has an impedance UWB bandwidth of 11.0 GHz from 2.6 GHz up to 13.6 GHz at −10 dB return loss. The simulated UWB strawberry monopole antenna displays an omnidirectional radiation behaviour with a simulated gain of 7.3 dB at 13.6 GHz, a directivity of 7.5 dBi at 13.6 GHz and favourable radiation efficiency of 97%. The proposed monopole UWB strawberry antenna has the technological possibility to be used for UWB applications.

Résumé :
Since the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) issued a license for the 3.1 – 10.6 GHz frequency spectrum for unlicensed radio applications, many papers have been published regarding ultrawideband (UWB) antenna design. The issue of UWB antenna design is determining how to create an antenna with a wide bandwidth, capable of rejecting communication systems that coexist with UWB bands, and capable of designing UWB antennas for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication system applications. This study examines the design of UWB antennas with monopole and slot types based on evaluations published over the last two decades. The discussion began with UWB and MIMO systems and then moved on to the configuration of monopole and slot UWB antennas. UWB antenna layout with notched bands and the several types of notched bands available. Finally, two port and quad-port MIMO antenna configuration is examined. To further understand UWB antenna design, numerous UWB antenna configurations are simulated. The outcomes of this review can be utilized as preliminary reading material for researchers looking into UWB antennas.

Résumé :
<p>The ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is a promising short-range communication technology for most wireless applications. The UWB works at higher frequencies and is affected by interferences with the same frequency standards. This manuscript has designed an efficient and low-cost implementation of IEEE 802.15.4a-based UWB-digital transceiver (DTR). The design module contains UWB transmitter (TX), channel, and UWB-receiver (RX) units. Convolutional encoding and modulation units like burst position modulation and binary phase-shift keying modulation are used to construct the UWB-TX. The synchronization and Viterbi decoder units are used to recover the original data bits and are affected by noise in UWB-RX. The UWB-DTR is synthesized using Xilinx ISE® environment with Verilog hardware description language (HDL) and implemented on Artix-7 field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The UWB-DTR utilizes less than 2% (slices and look-up table/LUTs), operates at 268 MHz, and consumes 91 mW of total power on FPGA. The transceiver achieves a 6.86 Mbps data rate, which meets the IEEE 802.15.4a standard. The UWB-DTR module obtains the bit error rate (BER) of 2×10-4 by transmitting 105 data bits. The UWB-DTR module is compared with similar physical layer (PHY) transceivers with improvements in chip area (slices), power, data rate, and BER. </p>

Résumé :
In this paper, the recent progress on sinuous antennas is detailed, focusing the attention on the antenna geometry, dielectric structure, and miniaturization techniques. In the first part, we introduce the basic principles of the frequency-independent antenna, in particular the self-complementary and log-periodic geometries, as well as the antenna geometries, all characterized in terms of angles. The operating principles, main advantages, system design considerations, limits, and challenges of conventional sinuous antennas are illustrated. Second, we describe some technical solutions aimed to ensure the optimal trade-off between antenna size and radiation behavior. To this aim, some special modification of the antenna geometry based on the meandering as well as on the loading with dielectric structures are presented. Moreover, the cavity backing technique is explained in detail as a method to achieve unidirectional radiation. Third, we present a new class of supershaped sinuous antenna based on a suitable merge of the 2D superformula and the sinuous curve. The effect of the free parameters change on the antenna arm geometry as well as the performance improvement in terms of directivity, beam stability, beam angle, gain, and radiating efficiency are highlighted.

Résumé :
Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology has become influential among academic research and industry because of its vast application in the wireless world. However, several drawbacks have in UWB based antenna. To tackle this, EBG (Electromagnetic Band Gap) structures have proposed. Furthermore, the design of EBG structures is very complex due to the uncertain EBG properties dependence upon unit cell parameters. Therefore, to the optimal design of micro strip antenna for applications of UWB, EBG-PIO (pigeon inspired optimization) on the basis of micro strip patch antenna has been proposed to enhance micro strip antenna’s performance in terms of directivity, gain, bandwidth and efficiency. To select design parameters optimally, the PIO technique is proposed with substrate material of Rogers RT/Duroid 6010 with height h = 1.6 mm. Proposed antenna return loss remains –34.6 dB to cover applications of UWB (3.1–10.6 GHz). Also, results exhibited by both proposed technique and fabricated model-based antenna has outperformed than existing techniques regarding directivity, return loss, bandwidth, gain and radiation efficiency.

Résumé :
A reconfigurable bandwidth antenna for an impulse radio-UWB (IR/UWB) system design is illustrated in this paper. By adopting a continuously tunable low-pass filter by varactor at the feed of the antenna, the proposed antenna obtains a continuous tunable bandwidth from 1.02 GHz to 2.42 GHz. To ensure the identifiability of transmitted pulses in (IR-UWB) system, the antenna is analyzed in both frequency domain and time domain. The proposed antenna is valid with a system fidelity factor (SFF) above 0.8 while the bandwidth is tuning. The compact size, low cost, and tunable bandwidth with the identifiability of the transmitted pulse makes it suitable for UWB impulse radars to improve the utility ratio of frequency, and dynamic adjustment avoids interference of the IR-UWB in other communication frequency bands.

Résumé :
This study presents a compact ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) with huge bandwidth for the demands of modern wireless communities. To overcome some technical limitations of the employed substrate and UWB antenna design, a slotted patch resonator was used to create and simulate this antenna based on Locked-Key topology. It has been printed on a 1.5 mm-thick FR4 substrate with a dielectric constant of 4.4. A feeder with characteristic impedances of 50 Ω has been employed. A CST electromagnetic simulator has been employed to simulate and analyze the antenna design. It is operated within the UWB spectrum with a bandwidth of 10.354 GHz, spanning 3.581 to 14 GHz. The overall surface area is 27 × 25 mm2. The gain and maximum efficiency within UWB are better than 3 dBi and 82%, respectively. The antenna is fabricated, and the simulated results are correlated with the measured ones. Finally, the equivalent circuit models for the antenna and rectifier circuit are simulated and measured.

Résumé :
A compact band-notched UWB (Ultra-Wide Band) antenna with integrated Bluetooth is developed for personal wireless communication and UWB applications. The antenna operates at the UWB frequency band (3.1–10.6 GHz) as well as Bluetooth (2.4–2.484 GHz), with band-notch characteristics at the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) frequency band (5–6 GHz). A new technique of integrating Bluetooth within a UWB band-notched antenna is developed and analyzed. The UWB frequency band is realized by utilizing a conventional cylindrical radiating patch and a modified partial ground plane. The Bluetooth band is integrated using a miniaturized resonator with the addition of capacitors. Further, to mitigate the interference of the WLAN frequency band within the UWB spectrum, a conventional slot resonator is integrated within the radiator to achieve the task. The antenna is designed and fabricated, and its response in each case is provided. Moreover, the antenna exhibits a good radiation pattern with a stable gain in the passband. The present antenna is also compared to state-of-the-art structures proposed in the literature. The miniaturized dimensions (30 × 31 mm2) of the antenna make it an excellent candidate for UWB and personal wireless communication applications.

Résumé :
During the last two decades, radar, remote sensing, and imaging applications have all made use of ultra-wide band (UWB) technology. UWB systems are susceptible to interference from narrowband signals, hence this work provides a single-notch antenna for the UWB system. There are two stages to the design process. After creating the baseband antenna, it is necessary to create a notched band UWB antenna by carving a slot into patch antenna. In the UWB range (3.1-10.6) GHz, the UWB antenna has the dimensions of 20x30 mm with substrate thickness 1.6 mm made from FR4 lossy. The design relative permittivity was 4.3, a rectangular patch with a portion of the ground is used in the design. A typical slot-shaped resonator is connected to the patch to reject a frequency band (3.273-3.81) GHz which is a world interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) to solve the problem of the interference with other bands in UWB system For WiMAX applications. The suggested UWB filter will achieve notch band response centered at the resonance frequency of 3,4 GHz. Analysis CSTS v2020 software was used to carry out the simulation. Priority should be given to what has been learned rather than what has been accomplished.

Résumé :
Ultrawideband (UWB) antennas are widely used as core devices in high-speed wireless communication. A novel compact UWB monopole antenna with an additional narrow band for Wi-Fi applications comprising a metamaterial (MTM) is proposed in this paper. The antenna has a compact size of 27 × 33 mm2 and consists of a V-shaped slot with two rectangular slots in the radiation patch. The inductance and capacitance develop due to the V-shaped slot in the radiation patch. The proposed antenna has −10 dB bandwidths of 3.2 GHz to 14 GHz for UWB and 2.38 GHz to 2.57 GHz for narrowband, corresponding to 144% and 7.66% fractional bandwidths, respectively. The measured gain and efficiency meet the desired values for UWB and Wi-Fi applications. To verify the performance of the antenna, the proposed antenna is fabricated and tested. The simulated and measured results agree well at UWB frequencies and Wi-Fi frequencies, and the antenna can be used as a smart device for portable IoT applications.

Résumé :
The patch antenna with Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) characteristics is a promising candidate for wireless communication. It is a major research problem to mitigate electromagnetic interference (EMI) with narrowband technologies such as 5G lower band, Wi-MAX, WLAN and satellite band, which are all in the UWB region. This study describes a UWB antenna with variable band rejection that can be used to avoid interference with Wi-MAX and 5G lower band applications. The UWB characteristics of a simple rectangle patch antenna with a faulty ground structure has been designed for operational bandwidth (2.7–13) GHz. A novel method semicircular slot (SCS) at the radiation patch creates a band notched from (3.25–3.80) GHz and (3.4–4) GHz. Variable band rejection between (2.95–4.40) GHz can be achieved by adjusting the “Wa” values. When measured over the band rejection frequency, the return loss (S11) and VSWR values are very close to 0 dB and larger than 2. The simulated and measured results such as return loss, VSWR, 2-D polar pattern and gain have almost similar agreement. The design of the suggested antenna is simple, compact and efficient for Wi-MAX application, this is an ideal UWB antenna with the band notch characteristics.

Résumé :
This study investigates the use of ultra-wideband (UWB) tags in traffic conflict techniques (TCT) for the estimation of time occupancy in a real-world setting. This study describes UWB technology and its application in the TCT framework. Many experiments were conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the occupancy time measurement using a UWB-based tag. The UWB performance was measured using data from UWB tags as well as a video camera system by subtracting the time occupancy within a conflict zone. The results show that the UWB-based system can be utilized to estimate occupancy time with a mean absolute error difference from ground truth measurements of 0.43 s in the case of using two tags and 0.06 s in the case of using one tag in an 8 m × 8 m study area with double-sided two-way communication. This study also highlights the advantages and limitations of using UWB technology in TCT and discusses potential applications and future research directions. The findings of this study suggest that the UWB-based localization of multiple tags needs further improvements to enable consistent multi-tag tracking. In future work, this technology could be utilized to estimate post-encroachment time (PET) in various traffic scenarios, which could improve road safety and reduce the risk of collisions.

Résumé :
Short-range ultra-wideband (UWB) radar sensors belong to very promising sensing techniques that have received vast attention recently. The M-sequence UWB sensing techniques for radio detection and ranging feature several advantages over the other short-range radars, inter alia superior integration capabilities. The prerequisite to investigate their capabilities in real scenarios is the existence of physically available hardware, i.e., particular functional system blocks. In this paper, we present three novel blocks of M-sequence UWB radars exploiting application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology. These are the integrated 15th-order M-sequence radar transceiver on one chip, experimental active Electronic Communication Committee (ECC) bandpass filter, and miniature transmitting UWB antenna with an integrated amplifier. All these are custom designs intended for the enhancement of capabilities of an M-sequence-based system family for new UWB short-range sensing applications. The design approaches and verification of the manufactured prototypes by measurements of the realized circuits are presented in this paper. The fine balance on technology capabilities (Fc of roughly 120 GHz) and thoughtful design process of the proposed blocks is the first step toward remarkably minimized devices, e.g., as System on Chip designs, which apparently allow broadening the range of new applications.

Résumé :
Integrated Ultra-wideband (UWB) and Magnetic Inertial Measurement Unit (MIMU) sensor systems have been gaining popularity for pedestrian tracking and indoor localization applications, mainly due to their complementary error characteristics that can be exploited to achieve higher accuracies via a data fusion approach. These integrated sensor systems have the potential for improving the ambulatory 3D analysis of human movement (estimating 3D kinematics of body segments and joints) over systems using only on-body MIMUs. For this, high accuracy is required in the estimation of the relative positions of all on-body integrated UWB/MIMU sensor modules. So far, these integrated UWB/MIMU sensors have not been reported to have been applied for full-body ambulatory 3D analysis of human movement. Also, no review articles have been found that have analyzed and summarized the methods integrating UWB and MIMU sensors for on-body applications. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of this technology is essential to identify its potential for application in 3D analysis of human movement. This article thus aims to provide such a comprehensive analysis through a structured technical review of the methods integrating UWB and MIMU sensors for accurate position estimation in the context of the application for 3D analysis of human movement. The methods used for integration are all summarized along with the accuracies that are reported in the reviewed articles. In addition, the gaps that are required to be addressed for making this system applicable for the 3D analysis of human movement are discussed.
