BOTTINI, LUCA. « Spazio urbano e comportamento sociale.
Texte intégralThis doctoral thesis aims to give a contribute to the topic of the “spatial sociology”. Although the technologies have profoundly changed the lives of individuals, social phenomena need places to occur. If we think about the life in the urban communities, sharing the same physical spaces, we easily understand why our statement appears so true. Virtual spaces assume today the preferred location in which we carry out most of our social interactions; but the spatial dimension, in all of its various components, can’t be completely ignored from our dwelling experience. This is particularly important if we aim to analyze social phenomena in specific contexts such as urban spaces. Traditionally, urban sociology was created to investigate the relationship between the social behavior within an urban environment. It is therefore evident that the spatial dimension assumes a central role in a similar approach. The research that ensued has further problematized the concept of space and its connections with social analysis, making a considerable effort of interpretation. However it seems that this huge amount of theoretical contributions lacks of solid empirical verification. The impression gotten from a quick read of the main literature, both classical and contemporary, is in fact of a large range of paradigms, bringing together the social phenomena with spatial dimension, but this multitude of contributions, however, seems not to follow a deep reflection on the empirical dimension, for instance on what should we do in order to investigate this relationship and therefore observe the effects on the individuals behavior. The space, when considered, is too often limited to a background in which various actors move and interact with each other, but it is almost never regarded as an object with its own autonomy. In this sense, urban sociology, which more than any other sociological disciplines gives to the space so much importance, can open significant research horizons. In this project we intend to pull over to urban sociology the tools and theoretical frameworks of environmental psychology, a discipline which has made a major effort to translate empirically the relationship between individuals and their environments, providing definitions and operational concepts that can be measured and tested. The purpose of this doctoral thesis can be summarized as follow: -empirically exploration of the relationship between urban space and social phenomena, specifically the neighborhood and the community participation -Propose a new analytical approach to the problem, getting urban and sociology closer to the environmental psychology -open new research horizons providing more tools useful to the policy makers in the analysis of an urban neighborhood quality (such as the urban impact on citizen participation).

Texte intégralIn a time when more and more people are moving to cities, the purpose of this study has been to analyze lines of demarcation in the urban landscape and to see if there are border technologies that surrounds the community. Charles Tilly's (2004) theory Durable Inequality and Richard Sennett's (2008) theory on the search for communalism in today's urban landscape have been fruitful starting-points for fulfilling the aim of this study. Täby Municipality, which is located north of Stockholm, has been the object of this study and with the theories presented by Blakely & Snyder (1997) as guidelines a further aim of this study has been to compare the lines of demarcation within Täby with physical boundaries in Gated Communities. The study has been conducted with qualitative interviews in combination with an observation, and the results of the study show that there are both unifying and excluding elements within Täby. The physical boundaries that the study has shown to be present in the municipality consist of geographical distance and forms of tenure. Furthermore, the wish to be near one's family has proven to be an important factor for social migration patterns. The analyzed statements of the residents of Täby display a calculating outlook towards their choice of residency where the benefits and downsides of the municipality are weighed against each other. However, regardless of the fact that Stockholm, with its exciting city life, is an alluring option of residency, Täby is perceived as the best alternative. Täby is the adequate option and the municipality where most opportunities are presented.
Gustafsson, Camilla. « Anonymiteten i dagens kameraövervakade stad ». Thesis, Örebro University, School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:oru:diva-5158.
