The whole of the geological collection had, unbeknown to Sarjeant, been transferred to the Department of Geology, University of Leicester in 1959. Résumé :
Objective: To evaluate the role of endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) in the regulation of smooth muscle tone in normal and varicose human saphenous veins. Design: An in vitro study of site-matched saphenous vein samples from patients undergoing varicose vein surgery or carotid endarterectomy. Setting: Department of Surgery, University of Leicester, Leicester Royal Infirmary. Patients: Nine patients undergoing varicose vein surgery and seven patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy. Measurements: Vein samples were contracted with noradrenaline and relaxation studies performed with acetylcholine (endothelium-dependent) and sodium nitroprusside (endothelium-independent). Results: There was no statistical difference in either smooth muscle contraction in response to noradrenaline or in endothelial-dependent relaxation in response to acetylcholine. All veins retained the ability to relax in response to nitroprusside. Conclusions: No evidence of a defect in either smooth muscle function or EDRF release has been found that may contribute to the aetiology of varicose veins.

Résumé :
The future famous geneticist Prof. Yuri Dubrova (1955–2023) was born in Kyiv (Ukraine), where he received excellent secondary and higher education and was awarded with a gold medal upon graduating from school. Eventually, he became one of the best graduates of the Department of Vertebrate Zoology at the Faculty of Biology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. His interests included theoretical biology, evolutionary theory, genetics, biometrics, and bionics (for some time he studied the lateral lineage of cyprinid fishes). In his last years at the university, he focused on the study of spontaneous mutations. At the Vavilov Institute of General Genetics in Moscow, Y. Dubrova continued his post-graduate studies and successfully defended his PhD thesis. After the collapse of the USSR, he moved to the UK in search of better scientific and technical opportunities, where he became a professor at the University of Leicester. The scientist lived and worked in Leicester until the end of his life. He devoted himself fully to science, especially to radiation, medical and population genetics, and to teaching, and tried to participate in the study of highly complex medical and genetic issues related, in particular, to the consequences of man-made disasters—Chornobyl (Ukraine, Belarus), Semipalatinsk (Kazakhstan)—and other cases of large-scale radiation effects on life. Dr. Dubrova is the author and co-author of more than 150 scientific articles published in leading journals, including the American Journal of Human Genetics, International Journal of Radiation Biology, Radiation Research, Molecular Biology and Evolution, International Journal of Cancer, British Journal of Cancer, Science, and Nature. He co-operated with many of the world’s leading geneticists and gave lectures in Ukraine, Russia, the USA, Canada, Japan, etc. The article uses fragments of the author’s long correspondence with Y. Dubrova, which may be of interest to biographers of F. Dobrzhansky, M. Tymofeiev-Resovsky, O. Sozinov, O. Yablokov, O. Kistiakowsky, as well as to students, teachers, and historians of Kyiv National University, Kaniv Nature Reserve, and the University of Leicester.

Yanul, Travis. « Evaluating Faculty Performance : A Comparison of Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales Developed for Western Kentucky University Psychology Department Faculty ». TopSCHOLAR®, 2008. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1037.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The current study consisted of a comparison of Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales (BARS) developed in 2001 and 2008 for the evaluation of the performance of faculty in the Western Kentucky University Psychology Department. BARS generally are less susceptible to various types of rating error than are other rating formats, and are highly relevant to the target job because they utilize behavioral examples of performance. Furthermore, BARS development requires the participation of job incumbents. In both 2001 and 2008, Psychology Department faculty members were involved in every phase of the development process of the BARS instruments addressed in the current study. The new BARS format contains five broad categories of performance with 12 redefined performance dimensions within these categories. The faculty identified a number of new behavioral exemplars for each performance dimension. The new BARS offers several benefits over the previous BARS. Faculty, particularly newer faculty not involved in developing the 2001 format, should be more satisfied with the new instrument; faculty should perceive both the development process and the resulting instrument to be fair; and faculty should consider the instrument to be more valid because of their direct involvement in providing the content. Future research should be conducted to directly assess faculty perceptions of the BARS instrument and development process.

Devereaux, Temma Jo. « Cultural Responsiveness in the Special Education/ESL Department : Faculty Perceptions at Brigham Young University ». BYU ScholarsArchive, 2009. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1791.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Faculty members from Brigham Young University's special education/ESL program participated in professional development centered on increasing multicultural competence. The primary investigator interviewed faculty members regarding their perceptions of professional development. After conducting the interviews, faculty members' feedback was coded to determine whether or not the professional development aided them in infusing more culturally sensitive practices into the curriculum and created a more sensitive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds. Researchers also coded the faculty members' feedback to determine if faculty members felt they have changed at an individual/personal level in terms of how they view their own cultural background as well as how they view their students' cultural backgrounds. Information is summarized, providing insight into factors that strengthen professional development, ultimately increasing cultural competence. Additionally, suggestions are made to improve consultation skills and build stronger rapport with those from diverse backgrounds and at the university level, more effectively recruiting and retaining diverse students in school-based professions, including special education programs.

Brooke, Joseph A. III. « A Web-Enabled Temporal Database Human Resources Application ». UNF Digital Commons, 2001. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/167.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Despite the inclusion of a variety of time-related or 'temporal' datatypes in the SQL-92 standard, vendors of commercially-available Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) have universally elected to not fully comply with the standard. Perhaps even more frustrating is the fact that each vendor has chosen to include a different subset of temporal datatypes than their competitors, with most vendors adding a proprietary twist to their datatypes not even contained within the standard. This lack of conformity has left users of these database products faced with a difficult choice: either avoid temporal functionality within their database applications or develop and manage complex and often convoluted code to insert, maintain, and query this important data. Industry is replete with examples of both choices; not all of which have happy endings. This project demonstrates some of the options available to RDBMS users who choose to employ temporal functionality in their applications. Alternatives are presented using a conceptual human resources application deployed via internet. Data is stored in a commercial RDBMS product. Solutions to temporal storage and query issues are presented.

Résumé :
AbstractUnited Arab Emirates University (UAEU), located in the city of AL Ain, is a well-established institution since 1976. The department of Architectural Engineering within the College of Engineering is ABET credited. The Graduating Projects (GP) are part of this curriculum. In pre-pandemic conditions, the students had regular weekly meetings with several faculty based on the project needs. During COVID-19 pandemic, the full program went into online mode. During this change, the students, faculty, and staff had to adapt to new teaching methods in a noticeably short time. This research aims to find and highlight the lessons learned during this change to the GP. The methodology starts with the analysis of two main case studies. Case study A started in fall of 2019 and ended in the spring of 2020 (partially developed in face-to-face mode (in person, on the campus) and partially online mode). Case Study B started in the fall of 2020 and ended in the spring of 2021 (online mode). The case study analysis describes the project’s main objectives and the steps taken by the students to achieve these objectives. The methodology follows the tool analysis. Since the tool used is innovative and complex, in addition to the program, the process of learning, application, and outcomes is crucial. The pandemic’s impact on students’ psychology and productivity is the following step that helps understand how the changes in society and the extensive use of virtual tools helped the students cooperate with the situation. The results showed an improvement in the student’s skills in using advanced tools to achieve the project goal. This research is an attempt in understanding how the pandemic impacted GP work. The outcomes of this study might improve the GP program in the AE Department by integrating a hybrid approach with face-to-face meetings and online training for students to achieve the project targets with more advanced tools.

Résumé :
The main projective methods are conceived to be applied in a classic-paper style and the virtual-e-learning style represents the only possible learning experience for the students. The paper describes the experience of conceiving and using computer software in order to introduce the bases of projective psychology. The software (Matei Georgescu, Projective technique – interactive software, produced by Titu Maiorescu University, Bucharest, Romanian Office for Author Right: 0113 / 06. 02. 2001) was used in the benefit of the third year psychology students of a private university and support the direct experience with the virtual-stimulus-material of the main projective techniques such as Rotter, Düss, T.A.T., Rosenzweig, Rorschach, Szondi, Lüscher, Koch. Projective Psychology Lab was developed by se use of the computer and the Projective technique software over a semester of study, for three years under my assistence. The program contains the following items: the limits of the projection concept, the analytic relation and the projective relation, verbal associative experiment, completing sentences test and fables method, Thematic Apperception Test, the frustration test, the inkblot test, the drive analysis test, the color test, the tree test, draw a person test. Each method presentation contains information about the technique, the stimulus-material and the manner of interpretation. The access to stimulus-material of the Thematic Apperception Test, the frustration test, the inkblot test and the drive test analysis is possible in the order of test protocol. The software allows the color calibration of Lüscher test and also quotation examples. The Rorschach stimulus-material can be rotated within 360 degrees limit. The quotations index of the tree test is accessible in the order of the main interpretative zones. Despite the fact that the projective techniques were not conceived to be applied in the virtual-computerized style, during the three years pedagogical experiences with the Projective technique – interactive software, we have noticed the succes of such an introductory electronic way of learning.

Résumé :
Over the last decade the technology of education has gained an important place in the educational process. To enhance this reality, international organizations have stated the need to use information technology and digital technology in the process of teaching, learning, assessment and evaluation. The most important international organizations which make recommendations and elaborate guidelines are UNESCO and European Commission. Considering these recommendations to use digital technology in education corroborated with the need of students to use it in their educational process, to collaborate, to work in teams, to contribute to their learning, the Faculty of Psychology and Sciences of Education of University of Bucharest within master programme ICT in Education and the Distance Learning department of University of Bucharest within its master programmes have courses designed mostly to enhance the use of digital technology in educational process. Therefore, the aim of the present research is to present a case of good practices in which the constructivist approach of learning is supported by technology using Google Apps like Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Slides. The case study is focused on the idea that learning is possible through dual factors: social interaction and simultaneous exposure to cognitive experiences in which peer and collaborative learning is central and the teacher is also mediator, moderator and facilitator of learning supporting students to develop digital competencies, positive attitudes of self esteem and empathy and cognitive abilities. The overarching outcome will be a coherent image of a master course designed to enhance ideas with technology based on a constructivist approach.

Résumé :
This paper reports on the current status of teacher training in economic and business education in Romania, based on the experience gained at the Teacher Training Department of the Bucharest University of Economic Studies. Relevant information is provided in respect with the content, methods, and materials used in teacher training programs in economic and business universities, both in pre-and in-service teacher training programs. By providing all this information we want to demonstrate that effective economics teacher training programs implies face-to-face courses and class activities, and also on-line interaction. The paper is structured in two parts. The first one is focused on the role of universities in supporting economics and business teacher training programs. All large universities and schools of economics in Romania have special pre and in service teacher training programs. Pre-service teacher training programs go together with bachelor and master programs in economics or business and consist in courses such as: pedagogy, psychology of education, adult education, class and school management, teaching methodology and strategies, or teaching methods and strategies in economics and economic subjects. The second part of the paper presents information regarding an in-service teacher training program specially designed, developed and delivered to high school teachers of economics and economic subjects by a Consortium of four prestigious universities in Romania: Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest University of Economic Studies, Al. I. Cuza University of Iasi and West University of Timisoara. Special attention is paid to the e-learning activities and teachers work on the economic education platform created to support and improve the training process.

Résumé :
It has been widely documented that many undergraduate students demonstrate antipathy towards statistics. This paper documents the findings from an investigation of statistics education in a sport and exercise science department at The University of Chichester in the UK. Sports science is a multidisciplinary subject that encompasses biomechanics, physiology, and psychology. The university had a suite of four programmes each with a different emphasis in terms of subject discipline. Academics’ use and interpretation of statistics are influenced by their subject specialism within sports science. The investigation evaluated the differences in examination performance between degree programmes, gender and previous mathematics achievement. Findings from the analysis of examination results found mathematics qualification to significantly affect achievement in statistics examinations. Qualitative analysis provided contextual detail that support the need for professional and pedagogic development.

Together with the qualitative analysis, the founding fathers of urban morphology also proposed quantitative measures of urban fabrics. Allain's methodological work (2004) presents an overview of these quantitative analyses of topological, dimensional and geometrical relations among form elements in urban fabrics. However, urban morphologists have traditionally resisted computer-based geoprocessing of urban form and their calculations were mainly carried out manually. Thanks to technological developments, the number of quantitative studies in urban morphology has increased and fully integrated geoprocessing. More sophisticated computer-aided analyses have increased the potential applications in urban design and in environmental psychology research. Space Syntax (Hillier 1998) and Multiple Centrality Assessment (Porta et al. 2006) are configurational, multi-scale approaches to the analysis of the urban street network, but miss the interplay between streets, building and parcels composing urban fabric. Space Matrix (Berghauser Pont and Haupt 2010) and, more recently, Multiple Fabric Assessment (Araldi and Fusco 2017) are geoprocessing quantitative approaches to the analysis of urban fabric morphology. This study has two aims; (1) classify quantitative urban morphology methods and (2) discuss how these methods could be applied in urban design and environmental psychology. First, the evolution of these methods along with the theories in urban morphology from qualitative to quantitative approaches will be discussed. Methods will be classified by combining their goals, as well as the morphological objects and the scales on which the analyses will focus. Finally, we will discuss how these methods could be combined and used in two different research perspectives: urban design and environmental psychology. Résumé :
Academic institutions have made significant investments to support public access to research data requirements, yet little to no data about these services, infrastructure, and costs currently exist or are widely shared. For public access to research data to be optimized, funding agencies, institutions, and organizations must better understand the investments made by institutions and individual researchers toward meeting these requirements. This mixed-methods study was funded by the US National Science Foundation (grant #2135874). The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and six research-intensive academic institutions—Cornell University, Duke University, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, Virginia Tech, and Washington University in St. Louis—used surveys and interviews to provide an initial examination of institutional expenses for public access to research data. Due to the breadth and heterogeneity of research data and funding, we scoped this work to three US federal funding agencies (Department of Energy, National Institutes of Health, and National Science Foundation) and five disciplinary areas (biomedical sciences, environmental science, materials science, physics, and psychology).
