Karray, Mourad, Mahmoud N. Hussien, Mohamed Souilem, Pascal Locat et Rémi Mompin. « Adjustment of spectral pseudo-static approach to account for soil plasticity and zone seismicity ». Canadian Geotechnical Journal 56, no 2 (février 2019) : 173–86. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/cgj-2017-0414.

Résumé :
The concept of the spectral pseudo-static procedure has been developed at the Université de Sherbrooke as an alternative to the conventional pseudo-static approach for the seismic stability analysis of clayey slopes. The destabilizing effect of an earthquake is approximated, in the new approach, by an inertial force that hyperbolically varies with depth while being proportional to the maximum acceleration of the seismic event. Its results have been rigorously verified against available static and dynamic laboratory tests, and have been extensively validated by a series of simulations performed using the computer code FLAC. Good agreements have been achieved between the results of the spectral pseudo-static procedure and complete numerical analyses, in terms of the computed safety factors and the critical slip surfaces. This implies that the spectral pseudo-static approach can be integrated into available limit equilibrium (LE) software providing a useful tool to examine the effect of dynamic soil characteristics on the proposed seismic coefficient profiles. The herein-reported study extends the previous endeavors to examine and quantify the effect of plasticity index (PI) (0%, 15%, 30%, 50%, and 100%) on the proposed formula of seismic coefficient profile using the same numerical modelling and assumptions. Original analyses were carried out considering earthquakes compatible with the seismicity of Quebec City (zone 4), and they have been repeated in the current study for earthquakes compatible with other regions having different seismicity (zones 2, 3, and 5). Based on the results of the current analyses, side-formulas were established between the spectral pseudo-static coefficient on ground surface for any value of soil plasticity index (PI) and the corresponding coefficient originally used in the main formula (PI = 30%).

Résumé :
Substantial research efforts are directed toward the development of precious metal-free catalysts for fuel cells, metal-air batteries and electrolyzers, because the deployment of these technologies requires the synthesis of low-cost catalysts with controlled properties in large quantities. Mixed spinel oxides are a promising class of catalytic materials for the oxygen evolution (OER) and oxygen reduction (ORR) reactions, and thus several works have been devoted to the understanding of the structure – composition – activity relationships. Examples include the correlation between activity of spinel oxides and the covalency of the bond formed between the oxygen species and the metal cation in the octahedral sites1, or the possible role of metal cations in the tetrahedral sites in the oxygen electrocatalysis2. However, studies highlighting the importance of the facet engineering on the electrocatalytic activity of spinel oxides3 are still rare. Here, we will present our recent work on facetted nanoparticles MnxCo1-xFe2O4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) prepared by thermal plasma induction; a one step4, cost-effective and scalable method allowing the synthesis of large amounts (up to 30 g h-1 for 50 kW units) of uniform and crystalline nanoparticles5. Structural characterization by X-ray diffraction and TEM-EELS analysis showed that the mixed ferrite nanoparticles are formed by individual nanocrystals with well-defined truncated octahedron shape and with {100} and {111} facets mainly exposed, have high crystallinity, a median particle size of 40 nm and a homogeneous composition down to the atomic level. Electrochemical studies conducted in 0.1M KOH using the rotating disk electrode showed the highest activity was found for carbon black + Mn0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 composite electrode: half-wave potential for oxygen reduction 140 mV more negative than that of 20 wt% Pt/C; 420 mV oxygen evolution overpotential at 10 mAcm-2 (identical to IrO2/C). These are among the best performances reported for ferrites considering the size of the nanocrystals. Computational studies using density functional theory used to study the adsorption of oxygen molecule on the {100} and {111} facets of both CoFe2O4 and Mn0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 demonstrated that the Mn0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 {111} surface appears to have a highest affinity for the O2 molecule. The sites with lowest adsorption energy on each surface were identified and further analysis of O-O bond length and frequency as well as the Mulliken charge and populations confirmed the activation of the adsorbed O2 molecule. The energy diagrams of the ORR and OER computed for both Mn0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 {100} and {111} surfaces also pointed for a higher electrocatalytic activity for the {111} facet. References [1] Y. Zhou, S. Résumé :
As far as hydrophilic direct wafer bonding is concerned, there are, beside classical bonding voids induced by particle contamination or surface topography, edge bonding voids due to the bonding wave dynamic itself. Indeed, as shown by Castex et al. [1], during the adiabatic expansion of the bonding wave at the wafer edge, humidity inside the bonding wave gas can liquefy and small water droplets nucleate. This is shown in Figure 1a, with the bonding of a 300mm silicon wafer on another one having a 145 nm thermal oxide on top and after a post bonding thermal annealing at 300°C. These wafer edge droplets result in bonding defects without the presence of particle contamination or surface topography. Even if bonding is performed under a dry gas like Nitrogen or Argon, these defects remain at the hydrophilic direct bonding interface. Indeed, there is always a small amount of water on a hydrophilic surface. During the first bonding wave propagation stage, gas compression increases the temperature and enables the gas to take water from the surfaces, as explained V. Larrey et al. [2]. The humid gas will result in edge bonding voids at the end of the propagation. There are only two methods to get rid of this phenomenon. The first one is to perform bonding under vacuum (<0.1 mbar). The second is to use a gas with a negative Joule-Thomson coefficient. Such gases will be heated during the adiabatic expansion when the bonding wave will go out of the bonding interface. Three gases have such a negative coefficient: Helium, Hydrogen and Neon. Helium has the lowest joule-Thomson coefficient at ambient condition and is the saver and cheapest one. Bonding under Helium atmosphere will then prevent water nucleation, as shown in Figure 1b. Usually, pure Helium is used which is then a dry gas. Some water will then be removed from the surface. As shown by Radisson [3], the adhesion will then be less important as well as the adherence as shown by Fournel et al. [4]. Adding water vapor to increase the relative humidity (RH) of helium could then enable us to recover standard bonding conditions regarding the amount of trapped water. In our EVG850LT bonding tool, a humidifier has thus been installed on the Helium gas line in order to purge the bonding chamber with a varying RH gas mixture (from 0 to 80%). As shown in Figure 1c, even with 68% of RH, no bonding voids are detected by scanning acoustic microscopy. It will be shown also that the bonding wave speed increases with the RH value, highlighting an adhesion energy recovery. The evolution of the adherence with the RH bonding conditions and after the post bonding annealing will be also presented. REFERENCES [1] A. Castex, M. Broekaart, F. Rieutord, K. Landry, and C. Résumé :
A total of 180 twenty weeks old black Nera laying hens was used to evaluate the effects of replacement of maize, an expensive conventional energy ingredient with Maxigrain® enzyme supplemented beniseed hull (BSH) on performance and haematological parameters of laying hens. The study was carried out at the Poultry Unit of the Teaching and Research Farm, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun State, Nigeria. There were five (5) treatments of 36 birds per treatment. Each treatment was replicated three times comprising 12 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design (CRD) experiment. Five (5) experimental diets were compounded with percentage replacement of maize at 0 (control), 25, 50, 75 and 100% BSH; designated as D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5, respectively. The was weight for weight. Diets 2, 3, 4 and 5 (D2 – D5) were supplemented with Maxigrain® enzyme at 0.1% of the test ingredient in the experimental diets. The ME (13.20 MJ/kg), CP (11.82%), CF (22.15%), and EE (24.40%) of the BSH compares with ME (14.37MJ/kg), CP (10%), CF (2.00%) and EE (4.00%)of maize to serve as its substitute. The egg/day (HDP), egg weight, egg mass and FCR were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by the dietary treatments. The HDP (%) were 75.14(D1), 73.57 (D2), 62.86 (D3), 48.57 (D4) and 31.14 (D5). The egg mass (g) were 42.50 (D1), 43.65 (D2), 40.88 (D3), 35.24 (D4),and 23.22 (D5). The egg weight (g) were 56.67 for the birds fed D1 significantly (P< 0.05) increased to 58.98 (D2), 64.89 (D3), 71.91 (D4) and 74.89 (D5). The FCR in the same order were 2.49 (D1), 2.44 (D2), 2.64 (D3), 3.08 (D4) and 4.73 (D5). Other performance parameters including the average initial live weight, average final live weight, average body weight gain and average daily feed intake were not significantly (P > 0.05) affected across the dietary treatments. All investigated haematological variables (ESR, PCV, RBC, Hbc, Lympocytes, Neutrophils, Monocytes, Basophils, Eosinophils, MCV, MCH and MCHC) were similar (P>0.05) across the dietary treatments. It was concluded that maize could economically be replaced with 50% Maxigrain® enzyme supplemented BSH in layers diets; and therefore recommended in the diets.

Abstract Background: The Philadelphia chromosome negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), including essential thrombocythemia (ET), polycythemia vera (PV) and myelofibrosis (MF) all have a time dependent risk of progression to either an advanced myelofibrotic state (post ET/PV MF) and/or to acute myeloid leukemia. The impact of disease duration upon the MPN symptom burden is not well understood, nor are the precise mechanisms of disease progression. We sought to better understand the impact of disease duration on MPN symptom burden. Methods: Symptom burden data was collected utilizing the Myeloproliferative Neoplasm Symptom Assessment Form (MPN-SAF) amongst MPN patients, collected at the time of an office visit in an international cohort of MPN patients as previously described (Scherber et. al.). Symptom burden assessment was a previously validated 27-item symptom burden questionnaire scored on a 0-10 scale (0= as good as it can be, 10 = as bad as it could be). The patient or provider was asked to report the time since MPN diagnosis. MPN duration was determined to be early if the diagnosis was established between 0 to 5 years ago, intermediate if the diagnosis was established between 6 to 10 years ago, and late if the diagnosis was established 11 years ago or more. Anemia was defined as a red blood cell count less than 10 g/dL, leukopenia was defined as a white blood cell count was below 4 x 109, and thrombocytopenia if the platelet count was below 150 x109. Statistical significance was calculated using ANOVA f-test and chi squared. Results: Patient demographics and disease burden: A total of 1443 patients responded to the survey, including 592 (41%) ET, 549 (38%) PV, and 302 (21%) MF patients, including 181 (60%) primary MF, 67 (22%) post-ET MF, and 54 (18%) post-PV MF. Among MF patients, mean duration of MPN diagnosis was 9 years, and mean duration MF diagnosis was 4.7 years. Among respondents, 757 fit criteria for early disease duration, 353 fit criteria for intermediate disease duration, and 333 fit criteria for late disease duration. Respondent mean age was 62 years and approximately half of respondents were female (55%). Patients with longer diagnosis duration tended to be older (p=0.009) and were most likely to have anemia (0.02), leukopenia (p=0.01), or thrombocytopenia (p=0.03). These individuals were also most likely to have a history of hemorrhage (p=0.007) or require red blood cell transfusions (p<0.001). Combined cohort symptom burden: On average among the combined cohort of ET, PV and MF patients, symptoms tended to worsen with time with this effect being significant for symptom items of fatigue (BFI, p<0.04), concentration (p=0.007), insomnia (p=0.02), sexual difficulties (p=0.002), cough (p=0.03), night sweats (p=0.002), and pruritus (p=0.02). Symptoms of early satiety (p=0.004), concentration difficulties (p=0.01), insomnia (p=0.03), sexual difficulties (p=0.02), cough (p=0.01), and night sweats (p=<0.001) had significantly higher prevalence in those with longer disease duration. Similarly, the total calculated MPN-10 score (p=0.008) and quality of life assessment (0.03) demonstrated worsened outcomes with time (Table 1). No significant differences in symptoms for the combined cohort were observed among individuals diagnosed 0 to 1 years ago compared to those with a diagnosis established between 2 and 5 years ago. Symptom burden in MPN subtypes. When evaluating specific MPN types, patients with essential thrombocythemia experienced significantly greater sexual difficulties over time (p=0.03). The severity (p=0.01) and incidence (p=0.03) of pruritus and incidence of night sweats (p<0.001) were significantly increased over time for individuals with PV. For those with MF, the severity (p= 0.01) and incidence (p=0.009) of cough also significantly increased with longer diagnosis duration. Discussion Overall, significant worsening in symptom burden can be recognized over time for individuals diagnosed with MPNs. Diagnosis may not necessarily correlate with disease duration as the timing of diagnosis may be delayed from onset of disease. Given the intent of this abstract to evaluate changes with disease duration, we did not investigate correlations between symptom burden and cytopenias. We do know that risk factors for survival in the MPNs include older age and thrombosis, however, disease duration should be investigated as an alternative marker of burden in future survival studies. Résumé :
Objective: To determine the adherence to the Mediterranean diet of a university population and to analyze various factors that could condition its nutritional quality. Material and Methods: Distribution of the kidmed test to a sample of 50 university students. The kidmed index (0 to 10) indicated whether adherence to the Mediterranean diet was low (0 to 3), average (4 to 6), or high (7 to 10). Each respondent recorded sex, age, weight, size and province of origin. Results: The sample was 33 males and 17 females aged between 18 and 25 years. 9.5% of university students had a low kidmed index, 62.1% intermediate and 28.4% high. Overweight university students had a significantly higher percentage of low adherences (15.5%) (p < 0.05) than those with a normal nutritional status (8.5%). Conclusion: 71.6% of university students needed to improve their food pattern (medium-low adherence to the Mediterranean diet). Students with low adherence had a higher risk of being overweight. It would be desirable to develop nutritional education programmes in university curricula.
