Résumé :
Lower in Power Factor of electrical equipment's will draws high current from supply power. The effect of this is affected by impedance of electrical equipment. Power factor correction of boost converter is done by using predictive control strategy. In this project predictive control algorithm is presented based on this algorithm all of the duty cycles required to achieve unity power factor in one half line period are calculated in advance by proportional Integral (PI) controller, the simulation results show that the proposed predictive strategy for PFC achieves near unity power factor. The power factor and input current distortion are analyzed using with control and without control techniques. Simulation results are shows that the power factor is higher than 0.99, and current total harmonics distortion (THD) is smaller than 20% under full load condition. In this project is how impedance of electrical equipment affects the power factor of electrical loads, and then distributed power as the whole. This project is important to verify the right action to increase low power factor effectively for electrical energy efficiency concern.

Résumé :
In this proposed system, two zero crossing detectors are used for detecting zero crossing of voltage and current. The project is meant to attenuate penalty for industrial units using automatic power factor correction unit. The microcontroller utilized during this project belongs to 8051 family. The interruption between the zero-voltage pulse and zero-current pulse is duly generated by suitable operational amplifier circuits in comparator mode is fed to 2 interrupt pins of a microcontroller. The program takes over to actuate appropriate number of relays from its output to bring shunt capacitors into load circuit to urge the facility factor till it reaches near unity. The capacitor bank and relays are interfaced to the microcontroller employing a relay driver. It displays delay between this and voltage on an LCD. Furthermore, the project is enhanced by using thyristor control switches rather than relay control to avoid contact pitting often encountered by switching of capacitors because of high in rush current.

Résumé :
In a current source rectifier such as a matrix rectifier, input voltage and current cannot be in phase unless an additional input power factor control technique is implemented. This paper proposes such a technique for a matrix rectifier using power-based space vector modulation (SVM). In the proposed method, the modulation index and phase required in order to apply the SVM are calculated based on the active and reactive power of the rectifier for intuitive power factor control. The active power that the rectifier should generate for the regulation of the output inductor current is obtained by the PI (proportional-integral) controller. The reactive power, which is supplied by the rectifier for adjustment of the power factor, is assigned differently depending on the output condition: for the output condition capable of unity power factor, it is set to a negative value of reactive power of the input capacitor, and when the unity power factor is not achievable, it is set with the maximum reactive power the rectifier can generate under the given condition to attain the maximum possible input power factor. It is determined whether the given condition is the light load condition by comparing the absolute value of the reactive power supplied by the input capacitor with the maximum rectifier reactive power that can be produced under the given condition. The SVM based on the active and reactive power of the rectifier in this technique allows the input power factor control to be intuitive and simple. The performance and feasibility of the technique were proved by simulation and experimentation.

Résumé :
This paper explores a model predictive control (MPC) strategy with constraints satisfaction for a high power induction heating load. The MPC predicts the state variables and future control sequence of the system in advance and achieves on-line-optimization with a reduced error. The state-space model of the system with a parallel resonant load is developed and then MPC is applied. The proposed approach controls the DC link current at the rectifier output and reactive component of the supply current. The DC current is used to regulate the power of the heating load and the reactive component of input current is kept at zero to attain the unity power factor. The results show that the proposed strategy regulates the power of the heating load, achieves unity power factor at input of the system and handles the variables within the defined constraints effectively.

Résumé :
In the recent years, three-level rectifier becomes an attractive rectifier replaced the two-level rectifiers. This rectifier provides many advantages, such as sinusoidal input current which contains low harmonics, unity power factor, bi-directional power flow, low voltage and switching loss for each switch. This paper presents a modelling and execution of the three-level rectifier for improvement of power quality under different loading based on voltage oriented control. The mathematical model and the control design were presented in this paper for the current inner loop and voltage outer loop, respectively. In order to evaluate the operation of the three-level rectifier under different conditions, the model was simulated by using MATLAB/Simulink. The experiment has been used to confirm the operation of the rectifier and its controller. The simulation and experimental results show that the excellent performance under steady-state and dynamic load variations was achieved; the unity power factor and pure sinusoidal in the grid side has also been accomplished.

Résumé :
In view of the fact that active power and reactive power have coupling relation, a novel vector decoupling control strategy is presented for three-phase voltage source PWM rectifier. In the paper, the power control mathematical mode of the PWM rectifier is deduced based on the mathematical model of rectifier in synchronous d-q rotating coordinates, and a new voltage feed forward decoupling compensation control strategy is proposed. The simulation results show that the voltage and current of the three-phase PWM rectifier have better respond preference, the current aberrance is smaller and the voltage is steady under the control strategy. The PWM rectifier can implement PWM commute with unity power factor, but also feed back the energy to AC side with unity power factor.

Résumé :
Traditional three-phase PFC converters based on one-cycle control (OCC) exhibit instabi- lity at light load conditions. This will cause much more harmonic current which is harmful to the syterm. To overcome this disadvantage, this paper introduces a modified three-phase power factor correction(PFC) converter based on one-cycle control in aircraft electric power system. The input voltage multiplies a gain and its result is added to the actual sensed current, then the sum of them is compared with the sawtooth waveform to yield switching signal. This is the modified contorl mathod. Finally the MATLAB simulations at heavy and light loads as well as the transfer between them are carried. The simulation results show that the improved control circuit can achieve unity power factor and exhibit stability at light loads.

Résumé :
This paper proposes an efficient speed control and power factor improvement of three phase induction motor using PLC. Hardware and software are implemented in this work. The hardware consists of power-circuit and control-circuit of the working system and software PLC programs were developed. Power factor correction is applied to enhance the efficiency of transmission network. Three phase induction motor is used which acts as inductive load which produce variation in power factor. The power factor of the supply line is directly monitored by the Multi-Function Meter which is connected in parallel to the supply line. The value of the capacitance (capacitor bank) for correcting the power factor variation due to induction motor is found out separately. Capacitor bank for the respective load is triggered by using PLC, which connects the capacitor bank parallel to the load and thereby bringing the power factor nearly to unity. The speed of the motor can also be varied from minimum value to the rated value by VF method. The results obtained prove that the power factor can be improved automatically and also accurate speed control can be obtained.

Résumé :
The double-fed control strategy for AC hoist motor is discussed in this paper. The AC/DC/AC power converter is adopted as main circuit. Three-phase neutral-point-clamped three-level rectifier is used as AC/DC link to realize unity power factor at grid-side, which reduces harmonic distortions. For the DC/AC inverter, three-level topology is used, which is controlled by stator-flux oriented vector control method. Meanwhile, energy flows in bidirectional way by back to back three-level power converter. The hoist motor control system obtains a high dynamic performance when stator side operating in unity power factor condition. The reliability and safety of hoist system is improved based on double PLC. The control system mentioned in this paper is being used to control a shaft hoist with a capacity of 260kW, and the power saving is remarkable.

Résumé :
This paper introduces the modelling of a novel three phase AC-AC converter with indirect use of a capacitor as DC voltage link. The proposed converter has high efficiency because it uses Space Vector PWM (SVPWM) technique at both rectificier and inverter stages to operate the pulse width modulation in IGBT switches. The novel converter is equipped with a power factor control to shape the rectifier input current waveform to be sinusoidal and to be in phase with the input voltage. To keep the DC voltage stable, the converter utilizes PI controllers. Simulations are conducted for output voltage from 120 to 300 Volts with output frequency ranging from 30 Hz to 60 Hz. The simulation results show that the converter is able to maintain stable the DC voltage and current. Furthermore, the model demonstrates the benefits of proposed converter in terms of acquiring high input power factor and sinusoidal current waveform at the output side of the inverter.

Résumé :
For all industrial and distribution sites, the lagging power factor of electrical loads is a common problem. In the early days, it was corrected manually by adding the capacitor banks of certain values in parallel. Automatic power factor correction (APFC) using a capacitor bank helps to make a power factor that is close to unity. It consists of a microcontroller that processes the value of the power factor to enable the system and monitor the power factor if it falls below (0.77) from the specified level. This paper presents the automatic correction of the power factor by adding the capacitors banks automatically of the desired value in a three-phase system in the form of binary coding (0-7). The main purpose of this system is to maintain the power factor as close as to unity, for the experimental case, it is set to (0.93) which helps to decreases the losses and ultimately increase the efficiency of the system.

Résumé :
In this paper, the disturbances in power system due to low quality of power are discussed and a current injection method to maintain the sinusoidal input current which will reduce the total current harmonic distortion (THD) as well as improve the power factor nearer to unity is proposed. The proposed method makes use of a novel controlled diode rectifier which involves the use of bidirectional switches across the front-end rectifier and the operation of the converter is fully analyzed. The main feature of the topology is low cost, small size, high efficiency and simplicity, and is excellent for retrofitting front-end rectifier of existing ac drives, UPS etc. A novel strategy implementing reference compensation current depending on the load harmonics and a control algorithm for three-phase three-level unity PF rectifier which draws high quality sinusoidal supply currents and maintains good dc link- voltage regulation under wide load variation. The proposed technique can be applied as a retrofit to a variety of existing thyristor converters which uses three bidirectional switches operating at low frequency and a half-bridge inverter operating at high frequency .The total power delivered to the load is processed by the injection network, the proposed converter offers high efficiency and not only high power factor but also the Total Harmonic Distortion is reduced. Theoretical analysis is verified by digital simulation and a hardware proto type module is implemented in order to confirm the feasibility of the proposed system. This scheme in general is suitable for the common variable medium-to high-power level DC load applications.

Résumé :
This paper presents the power factor control of a permanent magnet synchronous wind generator (PMSG) wind turbine using a phase voltage-oriented control (PVOC) scheme, which is different from the conventional rotor flux-oriented control (RFOC) method and without using a rotor position sensor or sensorless estimator. The proposed control system is operated in two separately synchronously rotating d-q frames. One is for a phase-locked loop (PLL) and the other is for the PVOC current control loop. A PI controller functioned as a low-pass filter in the PLL loop is designed for extracting the phase voltage angle for the coordinate transformation between the stationary α-β frame and the synchronously rotating d-q frame in the PVOC control loop. The d-q modeling of the PMSG with the three-phase voltage vector aligned on the d-axis is then derived and based on which an another PI controller followed by decoupling control is designed, so that the three-phase currents are in phase with the three-phase output voltages of the wind generator for unity power factor correction. The simulation results in PSIM show the performance of the proposed control system which is also experimentally verified by using a TI TMS320F28335 digital control chip.

A grid connected doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) system, driven by variable speed wind turbine is considered in this research to satisfy grid code requirements. Remaining grid synchronized and stable under voltage sag and voltage swell, obtaining power control through dc link voltage control, and providing unity power factor at grid terminals are the achievements. The DFIG system uses two back-to-back converters. Vector control strategy is used with the grid side and rotor side converters, and taken up for research for further improvement. The grid side converter controls dc-link voltage and maintains unity power factor at the grid connection point. The rotor side converter supplies the reactive power of the machine and maintains the speed constant irrespective of the transient behavior of the grid. In this paper the behavior of the DFIG system is analyzed under grid voltage fluctuation and the experimental results are obtained using RT-LAB. Main contribution of this work is in improving the DFIG system performance with grid low voltage and over voltage ride through capability through simulation, and its real time experimental verification.

Résumé :
Microgrids (MGs) are developing owing to the rapidly growing distributed power generation systems. The MG controls the flexibility of the network to ensure the requirements of reliability and power quality are satisfied. A typical MG normally consists of dispersed generation resources, which are connected by power electronic inverters, storages, and non-linear loads. This study deals with a compensation control method of a photovoltaic grid-connected inverter using unity power factor (UPF) strategy in MG. In this case, the proposed control method can provide output currents without distortion and with the UPF. Further, it is able to increase the inverter output current to approximately 19 times of the value obtained conventionally. The proposed control method can be applied to three-phase grid interfaced converters such as DG inverters and can also be easily integrated into the conventional control scheme without installation of extra hardware. A theoretical analysis is presented and the performance of the proposed control method for a grid-connected inverter in a MG is evaluated through simulation results.

Résumé :
In Green Energy technologies like wind energy conversion systems and Domestic applications like SMPS and UPS systems, the input voltage amplitude and input frequency are time varying in nature. Fast-Escalating and extremely challenging high efficiency requirements for AC-DC power supplies for notebooks, desktop computers are to minimize the power losses (Conduction losses). In the conventional rectifiers power losses are more and power factor is poor resulting in loss of efficiency. Normally, the bridgeless topologies, also referred to as dual boost power factor correction (PFC) rectifiers, may reduce the conduction losses by reducing the number of semi-conductor components in the line current path. Power supply units have to make the load compatible with the source. The presence of non-linear load results in poor power factor operation and produces harmonic components in the line. So PFC techniques are necessary to meet harmonic regulations and standards such as IEC 61000-3-2 and IEEE 519. A modified bridgeless topology may be used for such applications. A novel switching controller is developed that regulates the input resistance to a desired value. Hence input power factor is unity and also the total harmonic distortion is controlled to a tolerable limit. In the proposed model, the modified bridgeless boost converter is activated in to a pure resistance mode. Finally the performance of the modified bridgeless boost converter is compared with the existing basic bridgeless boost converter.

Résumé :
In applications such as industrial drive systems and power supply systems, the use of a three-phase voltage-source Rectifier pulse width modulation converter is becoming increasingly common. Examples of these types of applications include: Power Factor Corrections and the reduction of harmonics. The critical control requirements of an application involving a three-phase voltage-source Rectifier pulse width modulation converter are to achieve a unity power factor and to regulate the dc voltage. The unity power factor guarantees the highest possible efficiency, while the dc voltage regulation guarantees that the converter will operate as desired. In this study, a novel control method for stabilizing a Rectifier-Inverter pulse width modulation converter is designed and simulated to reach higher levels of stability while also improving dynamic performances. In the first step, the nonlinear equation system of the converter is transformed into a polytopic form. This is done with the help of the sector nonlinearity transformation. After that, a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy controller that uses the parallel distributed compensation operating concept is applied. The design of the control system takes into account practical control requirements, such as a fast voltage tracking strategy and line-currents regulation. In order to obtain the controller gain, a series of linear matrix inequalities must be resolved. Simulations performed using Matlab/Simulink make it abundantly evident that the proposed method possesses excellent performance in terms of both voltage tracking control and unity power factor regulation.

Résumé :
Abstract This paper presents the analysis, design and implementation of a power factor corrected Arc Welding Power Supply (AWPS) with a boost converter at the front end and three full-bridge (FB) converters connected in parallel at the load end. The modular arrangement of the FB converters offers several meritorious features like usage of power devices with comparatively lower voltage and current ratings, ease of power expandability, easy maintenance, etc. The boost converter operates in continuous conduction mode minimizing the input current ripple and leading to the lowest RMS current thereby improving the input power quality. Individual control loops are designed for each power stage. A dual loop control scheme is employed to incorporate over-current limit on the proposed AWPS which ensures excellent weld bead quality. The proposed AWPS is implemented to validate its performance over a wide range of line/load variations. Test results confirm its fast parametrical response to load and source voltage variations and over-current protection leading to improved welding performance and weld bead quality. The system is found to perform extremely well with very low input current THD and unity power factor, adhering to international power quality norms.

Résumé :
This paper presents a computer simulation model of the unity power factor uninterruptible power supply (UPS) topology using single-phase matrix converter (SPMC) that focuses on the switching integration for both rectifier and inverter operations. The proposed integrated switches capable of controlling the SPMC to operate as a rectifier operation to charge the DC battery during the normal operation and to switch the SPMC to operate as an inverter during power outage conditions continuously and instantaneously using a single power converter circuit. The use of a single power converter circuit can solve the typical UPS system that requires at least two separate power converter circuits, thus contributing to the higher power semiconductor losses and complicated control circuits. With the proposed circuit topology, it can improve the power density of the power electronics converter system resulting in low power losses. The active power filter (APF) function has been used to improve the supply current waveform to follow the shape of the sinusoidal reference current to be in phase with the supply voltage waveform, thus reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) level and improve the power factor. To verify the proposed operation, the selected simulation results are presented, and the proposed work has been done through the MATLAB/Simulink.
