Texte intégralDeep learning played a significant role in establishing machine learning as a must-have instrument in multiple areas. The use of deep learning poses several challenges. Deep learning requires a lot of computational power for training and applying models. Another problem with deep learning is its inability to estimate the uncertainty of the predictions, which creates obstacles in risk-sensitive applications. This thesis presents four projects to address these problems: We propose an approach making use of Optical Processing Units to reduce energy consumption and speed up the inference of deep models. We address the problem of uncertainty estimates for classification with Bayesian inference. We introduce techniques for deep models that decreases the cost of Bayesian inference. We developed a novel framework to accelerate Gaussian Process regression. We propose a technique to impose meaningful functional priors for deep models through Gaussian Processes

Texte intégralThe present work focused on non-linear propagation in Photonic Cristal waveguides. Photonic Crystals are composed of a semiconductor membrane patterned with a periodic air-hole structure. Owing to the Photonic Band Gap they exhibit, the light can then be confined on very small surfaces (<2µm²) and slowed down (ng>20). Hence power intensity of a few tens of GW/cm² are accessible using only Watt level input lasers, which can be provided by laser diodes. This opens up perspectives for on chip integration of all-optical function. Because dispersion controls the dynamics of nonlinear effects, we first aimed at a way to tailor it. Thus, we proposed a new design based on symmetry considerations; and we were able to obtain a large variety of dispersion features. Combined with efforts put on the reduction of propagation loss, especially the use of suitable semiconductor materials with minimised nonlinear absorption (e. G. GaInP), we observed for the first time the propagation of an optical soliton in a 1. 5mm-long PhC waveguide. A soliton propagates while preserving its shape, albeit the presence of a strong chromatic dispersion. This opens up access to the study others nonlinear propagation phenomena in the picosecond, Watt power regime. Thus we observed soliton-effect pulse compression where a 3ps pulse is compressed down to 600fs. We also investigated Four Wave Mixing process in the pulsed regime: the efficient parametric process resulted in a conversion efficiency of about 0dB. Finally, we observed new effects like a Raman-free Soliton Self Frequency Shift and optical Cherenkov Radiation in PhCs

Texte intégralThis thesis studies multimode quantum optics, from generation to detection of light. It focuses on three main parts. Multimode squeezed states generation within cavity is studied. More specifically, we take into account general quadratic Hamiltonian, which allows describing experiments involving arbitrary number of modes and pumps within a medium performing four-wave mixing. We describe a generic approach combining Green functions and symplectic matrix decomposition. This general theory is illustrated on specific cases. First, low-dimensional examples are given. Then, a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO) is described and studied; it shows a very distinct behavior from that of the SPOPO using second order non-linearity. This work opens way to the realization of quantum frequency combs with ring micro-resonators engraved on silicon. Single-photon detectors are described taking into account temporal degrees of freedom. We give positive-valued measurement operators describing such detectors including realistic imperfections such as timing-jitter, finite efficiency and dark counts. Use of those operators is illustrated on common quantum optics experiments. Finally, we show how time-resolved measurement allows improving the quality of state generated by single-photon heralded source. In the third part we propose a protocol for generating a hybrid state entangling continuous and discrete variables parts, for which the discrete part is time-bin encoded. This scheme is aanalysed in detail with respect to its resilience to experimental imperfections

Texte intégralExtinguishment of large solvent fire leads to the production of fire fighting water, which are collected thanks to the design of industrial infrastructures. Depending on the nature of the firefighting foam used, the resulting water may require the removal of fluorinated surfactants potentially present. After decantation of the organic phase, fire fighting waters essentially contain surfactants. Surfactants are amphiphilic chemicals having the ability to lower both interfacial and surface tensions by adsorbing in an oriented fashion at interface. Surfactant can form micellar aggregates in solution and on interfaces under certain conditions, and have a pronounced influence on interfacial phenomena. Hence, before considering any water treatment process, interfacial science and surfactant were introduced. This work has a dual purpose. The industrial purpose is to provide an economically viable alternative to water incineration. The foreseen unit will have to be mobile and able to extract fluorinated surfactants from water at a rate of 1-4.5 m3h-1 (20,000 m3 in 4-6 months). The scientific purpose of this work is the study of the behavior of surfactants in the context of water treatment processes. The state of the art of relevant water treatment processes and an experimental screening with real firefighting water permitted to identify two steps as likely to fit the constraints of a mobile unit: electrocoagulationfiltration coupled with reverse osmosis. The electrocoagulation process followed by filtration was applied to pilot, model and industrial firefighting waters. This process was found to remove efficiently the unwanted turbidity from pilot firefighting waters. Current knowledge about the separation mechanisms of small organic molecules in reverse osmosis has been reviewed, and rejection as well as flux decline were related to membrane, solution, and solute properties. Polyamide and cellulose acetate membrane materials were screened in a flat sheet cell. The stabilities of rejection and flux decline were confirmed during longer tests (several days) on an industrial pilot with the most appropriate membrane. A final design study confirmed the possibility to combine electrocoagulation-filtration and reverse osmosis to treat firefighting waters
