Résumé :
Unconventional development has revolutionized natural gas production, an advance that could play a major role in reducing dangerous greenhouse gas emissions implicated in global climate change. However, the ‘net carbon reduction benefits’ associated with natural gas (ie fuel switching from coal to natural gas for electricity generation) will dissipate if the environmental footprint of unconventional development is not addressed. New and developing technologies can help reduce the environmental footprint. For example, new technologies to identify methane leaks in natural gas systems can ensure that the carbon benefit is secured. And there are other challenges related to reducing the environmental footprint including improved water management and preventing earthquakes linked to unconventional gas development. One US state, Colorado, has proven that workable efforts can successfully be undertaken to require deployment of new technology to reduce methane emissions—the result of a first-in-the US collaboration involving political leaders, industry, environmental groups, and regulators.

Résumé :
The development of unconventional oil and gas shales using hydraulic fracturing and directional drilling is currently a focal point of energy and climate change discussions. While this technology has provided access to substantial reserves of oil and gas, the need for large quantities of water, emissions, and infrastructure raises concerns over the environmental impacts. Written by an international consortium of experts, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the extraction from unconventional reservoirs, providing clear explanations of the technology and processes involved. Each chapter is devoted to different aspects including global reserves, the status of their development and regulatory framework, water management and contamination, air quality, earthquakes, radioactivity, isotope geochemistry, microbiology, and climate change. Case studies present baseline studies, water monitoring efforts and habitat destruction. This book is accessible to a wide audience, from academics to industry professionals and policy makers interested in environmental pollution and petroleum exploration.

Résumé :
While the literature on the water-energy nexus tends to focus on scarcity and security, scientific research is revealing increasing concerns with the impact of energy production on water quality. This chapter explores the politics of energy and water quality, with a focus on water contamination associated with coal and shale gas development. It presents evidence of the effects of fossil fuel exploration and production on water quality, noting the life cycle water quality impacts of the coal industry and emerging work on the effects of unconventional shale gas and tight oil associated with hydraulic fracturing. While the science is drawn primarily from the United States, the chapter then considers the global implications of these findings for policy design. It argues that current regulatory approaches are mismatched with the environmental risks and calls instead for a holistic approach to policy design and management that brings together the energy and water sectors.

Résumé :
This book examines alternative healing practices in American popular culture. From traditional folk approaches to more recent developments, it discusses the rise and fall of more than 100 popular approaches to addressing both physical ailments and mental health needs. Offering insightful accounts of everything from aging prevention to voodoo & Santera, Alternative Healing in American History: An Encyclopedia from Acupuncture to Yoga situates each popular approach in the history and culture of health and wellness in America. Moreover, the book shows that "orthodox" medicine and unconventional approaches may have more in common than many people think, because both are subject to the changing nature of the medical understanding and the strength of their appeal to consumers. While the main focus is on remedies lying outside the medical mainstream, the book also highlights how many widely accepted therapeutic treatments of the pastfor example, "the water cure" (hydrotherapy) or lobotomy (psychosurgery)fell out of favor and were quickly forgotten. Besides examining popular healing techniques, the book also explores the changing nature of the medical marketplace and how once-standard treatments (e.g., leeching, psychoanalysis) have had their ups and downs. The book comprises five chronological sections covering time periods from pre-1900 to the present.

Résumé :
This chapter demonstrates the structural link between gender and genre in John Waters' work by examining three of the director's films: Pink Flamingos (1972), representing his early career; Polyester (1981), which marks his transition to Hollywood; and Serial Mom (1994), a movie from what has been called Waters' “safe and formulaic” period. Despite their stylistic and thematic differences, these three movies each expose the inconsistencies inherent in gendered and generic representation. The theory of disidentification offers an explanatory link between the director's resistance to the rules of both gender and genre. Disidentification is defined as a response to the failure of dominant forms of representation to include unconventional perspective.

Finkel, Madelon L., dir. The Human and Environmental Impact of Fracking. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400667138.

Résumé :
Fracking for gas trapped in shale could be a game changer in the quest to find alternatives to dirty fossil fuels, but it also has potential for harm. This book provides "one-stop shopping" for everyone who wants to know more about the issues. Oil and gas account for a large percentage of the world's energy consumption, and the search for new ways to extract both from the earth is a global quest. Fracking is viewed as an energy game-changer but is a controversial topic about which there is much misunderstanding. This unbiased work was written to bring clarity to the issues. Under the guidance of an internationally recognized public health expert, this book provides a comprehensive look at unconventional natural gas development from many different perspectives. Written for the layperson, the book dispels myths surrounding fracking, corrects misconceptions, and offers impartial, scientifically based information on both benefits and challenges. Readers will learn about the effects fracking has on the environment—our water, air, and climate—as well as on human and animal health. The contributors also look at the economics of fracking and at its socioeconomic impact on local communities and nations. They discuss legal and ethical issues related to the practice and, in keeping with the intent to provide a fair and balanced overview, share the industry perspective as well.
