Résumé :
Ultra-short laser pulses are particularly suitable for processing micro tools made of ultra-hard and dielectric materials. Ultra-short laser pulses provide a contact-free and precise fabrication of heat-sensitive materials such as visible spectra range. Visible spectra range has unique properties, which makes it an essential material in the tool, jewelry, and semiconductor industries. The processing of visible spectra range by ultra-short laser pulses is complex, as visible and near-infrared light is generally not absorbed. However, the intensity of ultra-short laser pulses is extremely high, so that the absorption scales nonlinearly with the intensity and, thus, visible or near-infrared light can be absorbed. The complexity also results from many partially interdependent process variables, such as the repetition rate, pulse overlap, track overlap, and scan speed. Excellent knowledge of the process is, therefore, essential for the production of micro tools. To make the laser processing accessible to a broader user field, the operator can be supported by a computer-aided design (CAD). The aim of this research was to the modeling of an ultra-short high-intensity laser for the visible spectra range in different environments of the angle of incidence, scanning speed, pulse, and track overlap. The experimental process included ultra-short pulsed laser processing of visible spectra range and surface analysis concerning modifications and ablation of the ultra-short laser. Ablation volumes were analyzed for single pulses, multi-pulses, and pockets. Pump-probe experiments reveal transient optical properties such as transmission or reflectivity. It was concluded that ultraviolet laser pulses are best suited to induce damage or modifications to visible spectra range surfaces. Additionally, shorter wavelengths have further advantages such as potentially longer Rayleigh lengths and smaller spot sizes.

Résumé :
Propagation of an ultra-short lasers pulses in a linear optical medium consisting of free space, dispersive media. However, analytical methods have the limitations of not being able to handle arbitrary pulse profiles. Also, closed form solutions are often obtained after certain levels of approximations. This has motive a few studies based on the use of numerical simulation techniques in the analysis of pulse propagation. In view of the recent advance in ultra-short pulse propagation, a strong need is felt for developing a numerical formalism capable of performing such a complete analysis of the issues involved in pulse propagation. This allows us to analyze the pulse in the time-frequency domain at any arbitrary plane. With this tool, we investigate the spectral and temporal evolution of ultra-short pulses at any arbitrary propagation distance.

Résumé :
Abstract In this work, we describe an interferometric method to generate ultra-short pulses below the Fourier limit. It is done by extending concepts first developed in the spatial domain to achieve sub-diffractive beams through the addition of a spatial chirp in one of the arms of a Michelson interferometer using a spherical mirror. To experimentally synthesize sub-Fourier pulses, we replace the spherical mirror with a water cell, since it produces chirp in the temporal domain. We also present an alternative procedure, based on asymmetrical interference between the widened pulse and the original pulse where the peaks of both pulses exhibit a temporal delay achieving the narrowing of ultra-short pulses with sub-Fourier scales. To characterize the performance of the system, we performed a preliminary assessment considering the percentage of full width at half-maximum shrinking obtained for each scheme. By means of a symmetrical configuration, 7% and 12% pulse reductions were verified, both experimentally and analytically, while for the non-symmetrical configuration, 10% and 24% reductions were achieved corresponding to main lobe to side-lobe ratios of 10% and 30%. The experimental setup scheme is simple, versatile and able to work with high-power laser sources and ultra-short pulses with a broad bandwidth at any central wavelength. The results presented in this work are promising and help to enlighten new routes and strategies in the design of coherent control systems. We envision that they will become broadly useful in different areas from strong field domain to quantum information.

Résumé :
The propagation within a one-dimensional photonic crystal of a single ultra-short and ultra-intense pulse delivered by an X-ray free-electron laser is analysed with the framework of the time-dependent coupled-wave theory in non-linear media. It is shown that the reflection and the transmission of an ultra-short pulse present a transient period conditioned by the extinction length and also the thickness of the structure for transmission. For ultra-intense pulses, non-linear effects are expected: they could give rise to numerous phenomena, bi-stability, self-induced transparency, gap solitons, switching, etc., which have been previously shown in the optical domain.

Résumé :
Based on the diffusion approximation theory, when the laser pulse transmitting through the turbid media, its energy will be attenuated and the pulse shape will be changed by the scattering and absorption. In this paper, Mathematics equations of the ultra short Gauss laser pulse in different pulse width tp are given, the reflective pulses with the boundary condition of semi-infinite homogeneous media are discussed. We get the simulation results of reflective intensity and the reflective pulse shape of different tp based on the diffusion equation. From the results, we know that the ultra short Gauss laser pulse will be widened by the diffusive scattering. Besides, we find that the various medium parameters will influence the reflection of the Gauss laser pulse very differently. With the boundary condition of semi-infinite homogeneous media, the influence of the absorption, the scattering, and the anisotropy coefficient will be also changed by the different tp of ultra short Gauss laser pulse. All the conditions mentioned above have been investigated in the present paper. This study will be very useful for the measurement of optical properties of tissue.

In the present paper, we compare novel MEDI results on iodine obtained with 30 ps laser pulses to those obtained in the femtosecond regime. The results indicate laser-induced trapping of the molecules not only in the ultra-short pulse regime, but also for the long pulses, since the fragment kinetic energy releases are essentially the same, although the pulse duration is varied over more than two orders of magnitude. Most interestingly, with 30 ps pulses significant post-dissociation ionization of the In+-fragments observed for the first time, proving that near-Coulomb energies and post-dissociation ionization can be observed simultaneously. A femtosecond double-pulse experiment confirms our recent hypothesis of molecular stabilization governing the MEDI interaction.

Résumé :
Abstract We report experimental and theoretical investigations with an in-house fabricated tris(8‐hydroxyquinoline)‐aluminum (Alq3)-based high-speed micro-organic light-emitting diodes (μ-OLEDs) and demonstrate very promising optical pulse responses as short as 400 ps. With a model for an electrically pumped OLED, we simulate the emission of sub-nanosecond optical pulses. The model includes field-dependent (Poole-Frenkel) Langevin recombination and reabsorption of photons by singlets (Stokes-shifted), and by triplets (TA). The good agreement between the measurement and the simulation is the basis for further study of the prospects on the ps time scale, i.e. stimulated emission and conditions for laser operation. For an Alq3-based micro-OLED with high-Q optical cavity, we predict pulsed laser operation with damped relaxation oscillations in the GHz regime and several orders of magnitude linewidth narrowing, but only during 3 ns at most. The simulated current density threshold values vary from 10 kA cm−2 for Q= 500 to less than 1 kA cm−2 for Q = 1000. No continuous-wave (CW) lasing is found due to the accumulation of triplet excitons for t > 5 ns, which has two deteriorating effects, (a) suppression of the gain-providing singlet excitons due to singlet-triplet absorption and (b) suppression of the photon density due to photon absorption by triplets (TA). Prospects for CW-lasing with other organic molecules are discussed.

Résumé :
The hydrodynamic model of the electron transport in the channel of a nanoscale field effect transistors predicts that three different electron transport regimes – collision-dominated, ballistic, and viscosity dominated – determine the ultimate response time of the semiconductor device depending on its length, momentum relaxation time, and viscosity. The characteristic response times of ultra-short channel transistors are in the subpicosecond range. We now report on a new measurement technique with a greatly enhanced sensitivity using optical band-to-band pulses with a controlled delay. The measurements using this new electro-optic sampling and hydrodynamic modeling reveal the ultra-fast transistor plasmonic response at the time scale much shorter than the electron transit time.

Résumé :
We present a novel experimental apparatus that can be used for extensive systematic studies of (single- and multi-shot) ultra-short laser pulse ablation. It is fully automated and generates a large number of ablation sites in a short time on a small sample surface area. For each site, the apparatus takes four in situ images: an image of the incident ablation beam (to determine pulse energy), a white light reference image of the pristine sample site, an image of the reflected ablation spot, and a white light image of the ablated sample site. The setup can perform ablation experiments as a function of many parameters, including pulse energy, pulse duration, number of pulses, time between pulses, and focus size. As a proof of concept, we present example results on single-shot ablation off crystalline silicon. Using only data acquired in situ in the presented setup, we determine the single-shot ablation threshold as a function of pulse duration and verify the threshold value using optical interferometric profilometry. The values we found agree well with literature values.

Résumé :
In the early 1980s, French physicist G. Mourou and his Canadian collaborator D. Strickland solved the problem of power drop by dispersing in time and space the processes of amplification and compression: a method of obtaining super-powerful chirped laser pulses (CPA – chirped pulse amplification). The paper presents brief biographical references to Mourou and Strickland. The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded “for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics”: Artur Isidorovich Ashkin (Ashkinazi, born 02.09.1922, USA), half of the prize “for the optical tweezers and their application to biological systems”; Gerard Albert Mourou and Donna Theo Strickland (became the third woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics) (quarterly premium) “for their method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses”. Since that time all lasers have been built on a new principle: after the amplifiers place a compressor from diffraction bars. Instead of simply amplifying the pulse, it is first spread out on spectral components spread over time, then they are amplified separately, then again assembled into a single pulse. At each point in time, only a fraction of the pulse is amplified, not the entire pulse, allowing for a much higher peak intensity of laser light flow.

Résumé :
In this contribution, based on the detailed understanding of the processes’ characteristics during reactive high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS), we demonstrated the deposition of silicon oxide (SiO2) thin films with improved optical and mechanical performances. A strategy for stabilizing the arc-free HiPIMS of Si target in the presence of oxygen was investigated. Arcing was suppressed by suitable pulse configurations, ensuring good process stability without using any feedback control system. It was found that arcing can be significantly alleviated when ultra-short HiPIMS pulses are applied on the target. The optical and mechanical properties of SiO2 coatings deposited at various pulsing configurations were analyzed. The coatings prepared by ultra-short pulse HiPIMS exhibited better optical and mechanical performance compared to the coatings prepared by long pulse HiPIMS. The optimized SiO2 coatings on quartz substrates exhibited an average transmittance of 98.5% in the 190–1100-nm wavelength range, hardness of 9.27 GPa, hardness/Young’s modulus ratio of 0.138, and critical adhesion load of 14.8 N. The optical and mechanical properties are correlated with the film morphology, which is inherently related to energetic conditions and process stability during film growth.

Specifically, (a) we demonstrate a new method of nonlinear frequency generation for femtosecond light pulses that alleviates group velocity mismatch broad-ening in the generation of second harmonic pulses that are shorter than the input fundamental pulses. The method relies on non-collinear phase-matching and group-velocity-matching. Using our method, we generated 28 fs second harmonic pulses from 33 fs 800 nm fundamental pulses. (b) We show that an optical wavepacket propagating as an extraordinary wave in a non-isotropic dispersive medium experiences a rotation (or tilt) about an axis perpendicular to the propagation vector. We measured the tilting of a femtosecond laser wavepacket in a birefringent rutile crystal. The measurements were carried out using a linear interferometric technique which, in contrast to nonlinear correlation techniques, allows measurement at very low power. A 23 fs delay between the left and right parts of a 30 fs, 800 nm wavepacket was measured for a 1 mm thick rutile crystal.

Résumé :
AbstractThe reflection of an obliquely incident electromagnetic pulse from a moving plasma half-space is studied. Using the Lorentz transformations, covariance of Maxwell's equations and the principle of phase invariance to transform between the rest frame and the moving frame, calculations can be conveniently performed in the moving frame. An analytical formula for the linear reflected waveform as a function of the incident angle shows temporal compression and pulse amplification at relativistic velocities of relevance for the generation of ultra-short laser optical pulses.

Résumé :
Under investigation in this paper, with symbolic computation, is the Sasa-Satsuma (SS) equation which can describe the propagation of ultra short pulses in optical fiber communications. By virtue of the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur procedure, the Lax pair for the SS equation is directly established. Based on such a Lax pair, a Bäcklund transformation is constructed, through which the explicit onesoliton solution is derived.Meanwhile, an infinite number of conservation laws is provided to indicate the integrability of the SS equation in the Liouville sense. To further understand the stability of the one-soliton solution, we employ the split-step Fourier method to simulate the propagation of the soliton pulses under the finite initial perturbations. In addition, the interaction of two adjacent pulses with different separation distances is investigated through numerical simulation. Analytic and numerical results discussed in this paper are expected to be applied to the description of the optical pulse propagation.

Résumé :
Abstract The combination of diffractive optical elements or spatial light modulators with fully synchronized galvo scanners offers a possibility to scale up machining processes with ultra-short pulses to several 100 W of average power with minimal thermal impact. This will be demonstrated with the high-rate applications multi-pulse drilling on the fly and material removal with special intensity distributions up to an average power of 162 W and a removal rate of 16.5 mm3/min. Based on the experimental results strategies to achieve drilling rates of several 10,000 holes/s or removal rates of multiple 10 mm3/min will be discussed.

Résumé :
The ionization and fragmentation dynamics of iodine molecules (I2) are traced using very intense (∼1014 W cm−2) ultra-short (∼60 fs) light pulses with 87 eV photons of the Free-electron LASer at Hamburg (FLASH) in combination with a synchronized femtosecond optical laser. Within a pump–probe scheme the IR pulse initiates a molecular fragmentation and then, after an adjustable time delay, the system is exposed to an intense FEL pulse. This way we follow the creation of highly-charged molecular fragments as a function of time, and probe the dynamics of multi-photon absorption during the transition from a molecule to individual atoms.
