Résumé :
The hexagonalRMnO3(h-RMnO3) are multiferroic materials, which exhibit the coexistence of a magnetic order and ferroelectricity. Their distinction is in their geometry that both results in an unusual mechanism to break inversion symmetry and also produces a two-dimensional triangular lattice of Mn spins, which is subject to geometrical magnetic frustration due to the antiferromagnetic interactions between nearest-neighbor Mn ions. This unique combination makes theh-RMnO3a model system to test ideas of spin-lattice coupling, particularly when both the improper ferroelectricity and the Mn trimerization that appears to determine the symmetry of the magnetic structure arise from the same structure distortion. In this review we demonstrate how the use of both neutron and X-ray diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques have been essential to paint this comprehensive and coherent picture ofh-RMnO3.

Résumé :
The spin liquid state of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice is studied within the self-consistent Green's function method. It is shown that the spin excitation spectra is gapless, and ground-state energy per site is Eg/NJ=-0.966, which is in very good agreement with the results obtained within the variational Monte Carlo method based on the resonating-valence-bond state. Some thermodynamic properties are also discussed.

Résumé :
Recently, numerous two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials are predicted with various promising properties, whereas noncollinear antiferromagnetic 2D materials are rarely reported. In this paper, we predicted a stable 2D noncollinear antiferromagnetic triangular lattice T-FeO2. The ground state is [Formula: see text] antiferromagnetic with stronger next nearest neighbor exchange coupling than that of nearest neighbor exchange coupling because of the RKKY interaction. Our Monte Carlo simulations reveal that the magnetic phase transition is from a [Formula: see text] antiferromagnetic state to a stripy state and then to a paramagnetic state with increasing temperature. In addition, by tuning the spin direction from an in plane antiferromagnetic state to a canted weak ferromagnetic state, a nontrivial topological phase transition could be induced. Our investigation about magnetic property and nontrivial topological phase transition is very promising for antiferromagnetic spintronics.

An influence of quenched nonmagnetic disorder on the phase transitions in the two dimensional antiferromagnetic Potts model with a number of spin state q=3 on a triangular lattice is calculated by the Monte-Carlo method. The systems with linear sizes L=20÷144 at spin concentrations p=1.00, 0.90, 0.80 are studied. By means of the fourth order Binder cumulant method, the inclusion of a quenched disorder as nonmagnetic impurities into a pure antiferromagnetic Potts model is shown to be the cause of the change of the first order phase transition into the second one.

By introducing a small amount of non-magnetic impurities into an antiferromagnetic (AF) two-dimensional (2D) Potts model on a triangular lattice it is that the impurities in spin systems described by this model result in the change of a first order to a second-order phase transition. The systems with linear sizes L × L = N, L = 9-144 are considered. Investigations are performed using the standard Metropolis algorithm along with Monte-Carlo single-cluster Wolff algorithm. On the basis of the theory of finite-size scaling, critical exponents (CE) are calculated: the heat capacity α, the susceptibility γ, the order parameter β, and the CE of the correlation radius ν.

Résumé :
Inspired from the connection between Lie symmetries and two-dimensional materials, we propose a new statistical lattice model based on a double hexagonal structure appearing in the G2 symmetry. We first construct an Ising-1/2 model, with spin values σ = ±1, exhibiting such a symmetry. The corresponding ground state shows the ferromagnetic, the antiferromagnetic, the partial ferrimagnetic and the topological ferrimagnetic phases depending on the exchange couplings. Then, we examine the phase diagrams and the magnetization using the mean field approximation (MFA). Among others, it has been suggested that the present model could be localized between systems involving the triangular and the single hexagonal lattice geometries.

Résumé :
We study the spin-1/2 and spin-1 [Formula: see text] Heisenberg antiferromagnets (HAFs) on an infinite, anisotropic, two-dimensional triangular lattice, using the coupled cluster method. With respect to an underlying square-lattice geometry the model contains antiferromagnetic (J1 > 0) bonds between nearest neighbours and competing [Formula: see text] bonds between next-nearest-neighbours across only one of the diagonals of each square plaquette, the same diagonal in each square. In a topologically equivalent triangular-lattice geometry the model has two sorts of nearest-neighbour bonds, with [Formula: see text] bonds along parallel chains and with J1 bonds providing an interchain coupling. The model thus interpolates between an isotropic HAF on the square lattice at one extreme (κ = 0) and a set of decoupled chains at the other (κ → ∞), with the isotropic HAF on the triangular lattice in between at κ = 1. For the spin-1/2 [Formula: see text] model, we find a weakly first-order (or possibly second-order) quantum phase transition from a Néel-ordered state to a helical state at a first critical point at κc1 = 0.80 ± 0.01, and a second critical point at κc2 = 1.8 ± 0.4 where a first-order transition occurs between the helical state and a collinear stripe-ordered state. For the corresponding spin-1 model we find an analogous transition of the second-order type at κc1 = 0.62 ± 0.01 between states with Néel and helical ordering, but we find no evidence of a further transition in this case to a stripe-ordered phase.

Résumé :
The critical coarsening dynamics of the spin S =1/2, 3/2 antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice is studied by the dynamic Monte Carlo simulation using a heat bath algorithm. The triangular antiferromagnetic Ising (TAI) model possesses an intrinsic geometrical frustration and a large degeneracy of ground state which may affect the equilibrium and non-equilibrium critical behaviors. The S =1/2 TAI has no phase transition at a finite temperature, but it was suggested that the S =3/2 TAI has the Kosterlitz–Thouless (KT)-type phase transition at a finite temperature. We employ a finite size scaling approach for the correlation function from the short-time dynamics of the S =1/2, 3/2 TAI to calculate the values of the static critical exponent η and the dynamic exponent z. For the S =1/2 TAI, our dynamic scaling analysis provides η =0.498±0.006 and z =2.278±0.020 at T =0, agreeing with the previous results. For the S =3/2 TAI, after identifying a KT-transition temperature TKT =0.51±0.01, we find the temperature-dependent η ranging from 0.301±0.008 at T =0.51 to 0.224±0.016 at T =0 along the KT-line whereas the value of z =2.20±0.06 is constant for T≤TKT. It is shown that the spin S =3/2 TAI model and the two-dimensional XY model, sharing the KT-type phase transition, exhibit similar static critical and coarsening dynamics behavior. For both the S =1/2, 3/2 TAI, the value of z (η) is compatible with (larger than) that of the Ising model at Tc and the XY model for T≤TKT in two-dimension. Our results imply that although the quasi-long-range order disappears with ηXY =0 in the two-dimensional XY model at T =0, the S =3/2 TAI still maintains it with η TAI =0.224 due to the effect of a frustration and a high degeneracy of ground state.

Résumé :
The magnetic phase diagrams of the two-dimensional Hubbard model for isotropic and anisotropic triangular lattices are constructed within the Hartree-Fock and slave boson approximations. The triangular lattice specific non-collinear and spiral magnetic states, as well as phase separation between them, are shown to be realized in a wide range of model parameters along with collinear magnetic states (stripe antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic). Phase transitions of the first and second order are found, and the boundaries of the phase separation regions are determined. A comparison of the two approximations, Hartree-Fock and slave boson, shows that electronic correlations suppress magnetic states, the region of paramagnetism being expand, for values U/t>5. At the same time, when the Fermi level is near the van Hove singularity, electron correlations do not change the diagrams qualitatively, which is consistent with the previously obtained result for square and cubic lattices. The results are compared with the data available in the literature for other methods and approaches.

We report the structure and physical properties of two quasi-two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnetic materials, Co0.66Al2Se3.53 and Ni0.61Al2Se3.55, which show highly magnetically frustrated characters. Powder X-ray diffractions demonstrate that Co0.66Al2Se3.53 and Ni0.61Al2Se3.55 possess identical space group of P-3m1 with lattice parameters a = 3.8089(1) Å, c = 12.676(1) Å and a = 3.7880(1) Å, c = 12.650(1) Å, respectively. Analyzing the susceptibility data of Co0.66Al2Se3.53 reveal a Curie Weiss temperature of −216 K, and a spin-freezing transition temperature of 4.5 K, giving a frustration index f = −θcw/Tf ≈ 48. Ni0.61Al2Se3.55 possesses an effective moment of 2.38 µB, a Curie–Weiss temperature of −62 K with no sign of spin-freezing transition down to 2 K. The AC susceptibility data of Co0.66Al2Se3.53 suggest a spin glass-like transition, but no intersite mixing between Co2+ and Al3+ was observed from the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements.

Résumé :
Magnetic materials with strong local interactions but lacking long-range order have long been a curiosity of physicists. Probing their magnetic interactions is crucial for understanding the unique properties they can exhibit. Metal-organic frameworks have recently gathered more attention as they can produce more exotic structures, allowing for controlled design of magnetic properties not found in conventional metal-oxide materials. Historically, magnetic diffuse scattering in such materials has been overlooked but has attracted greater attention recently, with advances in techniques. In this study, we investigate the magnetic structure of metal-organic formate frameworks, using heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility and neutron diffraction. In Tb(DCO 2 ) 3 , we observe emergent magnetic order at temperatures below 1.2 K, consisting of two k -vectors. Ho(DCO 2 ) 3 shows diffuse scattering above 1.6 K, consistent with ferromagnetic chains packed in a frustrated antiferromagnetic triangular lattice, also observed in Tb(DCO 2 ) 3 above 1.2 K. The other lanthanides show no short- or long-range order down to 1.6 K. The results suggest an Ising-like one-dimensional magnetic order associated with frustration is responsible for the magnetocaloric properties, of some members in this family, improving at higher temperatures. Abstract We constructed the magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams of new quasi-two-dimensional isosceles triangular lattice antiferromagnets (TLAF) Ca3MNb2O9 (M = Co, Ni) from dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, specific heat, dielectric constant, and electric polarization measurements on single crystalline samples. Ca3CoNb2O9 with effective spin-1/2 Co2+ ions undergoes a two-step antiferromagnetic phase transition at TN1 = 1.3 K and TN2 = 1.5 K and enters a stripe ordered state at zero magnetic field. With increasing field, successive magnetic phase transitions, reminiscent of the up-up-down (uud) and the oblique phases, are observed. The dielectric constant of Ca3CoNb2O9 shows anomalies related to the magnetic phase transitions, but clear evidence of ferroelectricity is absent. Meanwhile, Ca3NiNb2O9 with spin-1 Ni2+ ions also shows a two-step antiferromagnetic transition at TN1 = 3.8 K and TN2 = 4.2 K at zero field. For Ca3NiNb2O9, the electric polarization in the magnetic ordered phases was clearly observed from the pyroelectric current measurements, which indicates its coexistence of magnetic ordering and ferroelectricity.

Résumé :
We investigate quasi-two-dimensional buckled colloidal monolayers on a triangular lattice with tunable depletion interactions. Without depletion attraction, the experimental system provides a colloidal analog of the well-known geometrically frustrated Ising antiferromagnet [Y. Han et al., Nature 456, 898–903 (2008)]. In this contribution, we show that the added depletion attraction can influence both the magnitude and sign of an Ising spin coupling constant. As a result, the nearest-neighbor Ising “spin” interactions can be made to vary from antiferromagnetic to para- and ferromagnetic. Using a simple theory, we compute an effective Ising nearest-neighbor coupling constant, and we show how competition between entropic effects permits for the modification of the coupling constant. We then experimentally demonstrate depletion-induced modification of the coupling constant, including its sign, and other behaviors. Depletion interactions are induced by rod-like surfactant micelles that change length with temperature and thus offer means for tuning the depletion attraction in situ. Buckled colloidal suspensions exhibit a crossover from an Ising antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase as a function of increasing depletion attraction. Additional dynamical experiments reveal structural arrest in various regimes of the coupling-constant, driven by different mechanisms. In total, this work introduces novel colloidal matter with “magnetic” features and complex dynamics rarely observed in traditional spin systems.

Résumé :
An interplay of geometrical frustration and strong quantum fluctuations in a spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TAF) can lead to exotic quantum states. Here, we report the neutron-scattering, magnetization, specific heat, and magnetocaloric studies of the recently discovered spin-1/2 TAF Na 2 BaCo(PO 4 ) 2 , which can be described by a spin-1/2 easy axis XXZ model. The zero-field neutron diffraction experiment reveals an incommensurate antiferromagnetic ground state with a significantly reduced ordered moment of about 0.54(2) μ B /Co. Different magnetic phase diagrams with magnetic fields in the a b plane and along the easy c -axis were extracted based on the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and elastic neutron-scattering results. In addition, two-dimensional (2D) spin dispersion in the triangular plane was observed in the high-field polarized state, and microscopic exchange parameters of the spin Hamiltonian have been determined through the linear spin wave theory. Consistently, quantum critical behaviors with the universality class of d = 2 and ν z = 1 were established in the vicinity of the saturation field, where a Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) of diluted magnons occurs. The newly discovered quantum criticality and fractional magnetization phase in this ideal spin-1/2 TAF present exciting opportunities for exploring exotic quantum phenomena.

Résumé :
We introduce a Metropolis-Hastings Markov chain for Boltzmann distributions of classical spin systems. It relies on approximate tensor network contractions to propose correlated collective updates at each step of the evolution. We present benchmark computations for a wide variety of instances of the two-dimensional Ising model, including ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, (fully) frustrated and Edwards-Anderson spin glass instances, and we show that, with modest computational effort, our Markov chain achieves sizeable acceptance rates, even in the vicinity of critical points. In each of the situations we have considered, the Markov chain compares well with other Monte Carlo schemes such as the Metropolis or Wolff’s algorithm: equilibration times appear to be reduced by a factor that varies between 4040 and 20002000, depending on the model and the observable being monitored. We also present an extension to three spatial dimensions, and demonstrate that it exhibits fast equilibration for finite ferro- and antiferromagnetic instances. Additionally, and although it is originally designed for a square lattice of finite degrees of freedom with open boundary conditions, the proposed scheme can be used as such, or with slight modifications, to study triangular lattices, systems with continuous degrees of freedom, matrix models, a confined gas of hard spheres, or to deal with arbitrary boundary conditions.

Résumé :
Abstract $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements have been carried out to investigate the magnetic properties and spin dynamics of Fe$^{3+}$ ($S$ = 5/2) spins in the two-dimensional triangular lattice (TL) compound Na$_3$Fe(PO$_4$)$_2$. The temperature ($T$) dependence of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates ($1/T_1$) shows a clear peak around N\'eel temperature, $T_{\rm N} = 10.9$~K, corresponding to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition. From the temparature dependence of NMR shift ($K$) above $T_{\rm N}$, an exchange coupling between Fe$^{3+}$ spins was estimated to be $J/k_{\rm B}\simeq 1.9$~K using the spin-5/2 Heisenberg isotropic-TL model. The temperature dependence of $1/T_1T$ divided by the magnetic susceptibility ($\chi$), $1/T_1T\chi$, above $T_{\rm N}$ proves the AFM nature of spin fluctuations below $\sim$ 50 K in the paramagnetic state. In the magnetically ordered state below $T_{\rm N}$, the characteristic rectangular shape of the NMR spectra is observed, indicative of a commensurate AFM state in its ground state. The strong temperature dependence of 1/$T_1$ in the AFM state is well explained by the two-magnon (Raman) process of the spin waves in a 3D antiferromagnet with an anisotropy energy gap of 5.7 K. The temperature dependence of sublattice magnetization is also well reproduced by the spin waves. Those results indicate that the magnetically ordered state of Na$_3$Fe(PO$_4$)$_2$ is a conventional 3D AFM state, and no obvious spin frustration effects were detected in its ground state.
