Résumé :
Despite Peter Frost’s (1999, p. 128) call for organizational scholars and practitioners to “find suffering as a significant aspect of organizational life,” both have largely remained silent about it. This silence misrepresents the fact that suffering is a pervasive, inescapable, and costly organizational reality. Suffering matters, and a recognition of our general inattention to it exposes an under-appreciated shortcoming of established theories and approaches to management. We must acknowledge, account for, and explicitly investigate suffering if we are to truly understand the full humanity of organizational life. Accordingly, this paper outlines promising areas for future research on suffering in organizations.

Mobility should be at the core of the reallocation of taxing rights debate. With such a premise in mind, this contribution addresses this issue within Pillar One in its two components: the apportionment of taxing rights to market jurisdictions on residual profits of the most significant MNEs worldwide (Amount A) and the standardization of the remuneration of related party distributors that perform baseline marketing and distribution activities in market jurisdictions (Amount B). The aim is to show that not only the mobility of individuals but also that of MNE structures when deciding on their presence in market jurisdictions are relevant in building new paradigms on the allocation of taxing rights at a cross-border level through the specific impact of the said OECD proposal. Even if Pillar One seems doomed to fail, lessons learned from its design and its specific impact on mobility matters should inform further developments in reshaping international taxation. Nursing is truly an ever-evolving profession. It is one of the most versatile occupations within the health care arena. It is not the same profession today as it was years ago. Nurses need direction to create order out of chaos in today’s complex multifaceted healthcare environment. My survival plan entails a personal relationship with Christ which is strengthened by consistent time spent in the Holy Scriptures. Reading the Bible daily and studying scripture is a necessity. Scripture passages can inspire nurses particularly in going forward, in endlessly caring for other individuals and in sharing our passion to serve others as we venture forth.

Middle school students are awakening to a more powerful and empathetic consciousness to the world around them. They have a new interest in important, complex, and sophisticated issues and topics. Teachers can tap into this young adolescent energy by designing curriculum around topics that truly matter to the students and to people across the planet. One way teachers can shape this curriculum is by using middle grade and young adult literature as "anchor texts" for project-based inquiry.

Floyd, Charles Kamper III. « Truly Normative Matters : An Essay on the Value of Truth ». UKnowledge, 2012. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/philosophy_etds/2.

Résumé :
Is truth valuable? In addressing this question, one must parse it into questions that are more manageable. Is the property of truth only instrumentally valuable, or is it both instrumentally valuable and noninstrumentally valuable? Is the normativity of the concept of truth an intrinsic or extrinsic property of the concept? In addressing the first of these questions, I show that certain arguments are flawed, arguments that purport to show that truth is not valuable in any kind of way. After establishing that it is reasonable to think that the property of truth is valuable, I show how inflationists and deflationists can agree that the property of truth is noninstrumentally valuable. In addressing the second question, I rely on the distinction between semantics and pragmatics and the resources of moral semantics to claim that the normativity of the concept of truth is an extrinsic feature of the concept. I conclude that the property of truth is both instrumentally and noninstrumentally valuable and that the normativity associated with the concept of truth is an extrinsic property of the concept. In doing so, I suggest that beginning with an investigation about the value and normativity of truth has important ramifications for theories of truth in general.

Résumé :
AbstractIn this chapter, we will address the motive to start developing a business model and the context in which you are doing so. It is important to use this first building block of the Business Model Template (BMT) to carefully look for the social and ecological components and the context of your idea. The idea of looking carefully at the context is essential because this will steer the possibilities and choices that you have at a later stage. In this way, you can also expand your line of reasoning and motivation into one in which sustainability is central. Looking at a context with respect to its complexity is of the essence: trying your best to discover what truly matters, as well as where you see the opportunities to do things. Getting clear about what motivates you to start working on a specific issue is, after all, the basis for all the steps that are still to come.

Résumé :
Despite transformations of culture of ageing taking place and pinpointing lesser trivialization of ageing, in many CEE countries and globally, further-reaching approach to ageing experiences and meanings attributed by individuals of either gender have not come of age. Neither has it gained enough attention to cause a significant change towards truly inclusive perspectives or practices. This problem applies to men remaining to a certain extent imperceptible as prime caregivers to their chronically ill wives or partners.. By desk research, own research interpretation and literature review, the paper addressed men caregivers identity. Findings suggest the identity to be shaped by a relationship, and its story, with caregiven wife, identity spoiling as a result of stigma associated with caregiving experience and low social recognition of it. The study recognizes matters to be further assessed and may lay foundations for new directions. It also translates onto gerontological practice by recognizing factors which may assist caregiving professionals and possibly policy makers in better addressing the needs of caregiving individuals.

Résumé :
Globally, there have been significant efforts to develop new means of assessing progress beyond GDP in recent years. The recent publication by the UN Secretary-General of a policy brief (UN, 2023) is inviting member states to move beyond GDP by measuring what truly matters for sustainability and prosperity. The policy brief outlines the shortcomings of GDP as an indicator of summarizing everything too much and revealing too little to be able to adequately inform policy (UN, 2023; pp. 12). This paper will present a review of a number of recent documents (2019 2022) published by international agencies to explore their views on the role and types of growth to achieve their objectives such as reducing emission, improving resilience, protecting biodiversity and so on. The paper will discuss two approaches to growth and development. Most of the listed reviewed documents suggest approaches for governments to move towards sustainable, inclusive, and sustained economic growth. Second set of recommended approaches focuses on the importance of broadening the indicators used to describe economic growth, often referred to as moving beyond GDP. The paper will provide details on each of the suggested approaches and potential linkages and win-win solutions to improve pressing global challenges.

Résumé :
Entrepreneurship education (EE) is high on the agenda of governments and universities globally. With the new forms of entrepreneurship, there has been a surge of specific training programs and materials, e.g. ones dedicated to social entrepreneurship as well as for science & technology-based entrepreneurship. Parallel to this division of EE into subsegments, tools and methods such as the Business Model Canvas (BMC), Lean Start-Up and Customer Development methods, or Disciplined Entrepreneurship by MIT have spread to be used by EE practitioners globally. With the increasing globalization, virtualization, and mobility of learners, EE courses have learners differing in 1) their cultural context that reflects in their values and beliefs, 2) their educational and professional background, and 3) in the area - market and industry - where they aim to start their business. E.g., the process of entrepreneurship is likely to differ in dynamics when going into medical technology vs. mobile gaming, yet some aspects may be mutual to both businesses. Thus, EE education is facing a dilemma: How unified and non-context specific should the approach of the educator be to deliver EE in scale and keep the EE program manageable vs. how much to focus on the individuals or teams and their specific context. The paper draws its conclusions based on the quantitative survey done among 60 entrepreneurship educators globally in February-March 2022. The global respondent pool consisted of educators diverse in the context they come from, institutions and faculties they work at, and the type of entrepreneurs they have trained. The data analysis is based on descriptive statistics based on the assessments done by the respondents on 4- or 5-step Likert scales on perceived current EE practices and the perceived importance of different factors in successfully context-aware EE. The core taxonomy used to elaborate on context is the PESTEL-analysis of the environment, consisting of Political, Economical, Social, Technological, Ecological and Legal factors. The results indicate that the economical-technological consideration is weighted in today´s EE generally speaking, whereas the truly context-aware EE would balance that leaning to economical and technological matters with more factors, especially the one of social context. Another takeaway to participants is a set of proposed EE designs that deal with the contradicting forces.

Abstract The conventional sound recognition pursues meaning of a sound by analytical approach. But a human can recognize the emotional feelings of a speaker no matter what language he or she may use. There seems to be 2 kinds of such expressions. One is truly emotional at heart and another is to convey how he or she feels as a message. This work is aimed at understanding such messages of the emotional feelings of a speaker. Our preliminary work demonstrated that anger can be extracted from sound and characterized by noting the pitch frequency and the amplitude variation using cepstrum method.

Résumé :
Abstract This paper details experiences gained while developing a novel technology-driven approach to Risk Assessment methodologies, e.g., Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Hazard Identification (HAZID) and Hazard Operability (HAZOP), in oil & gas. Emphasis has been placed on combining encoded human knowledge with Artificial Intelligence techniques, in a way which fosters safer designs and operations, while maintaining Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) at the center of decision making. Encoding of human knowledge (e.g., Subject Matter Expertise, Industry best practices) in digital applications has traditionally been associated with creating static pieces of information, such as lessons learned documentation and validation activities for hazard analysis. New digital technologies, however, make it possible to create truly dynamic knowledge representations, which capture key concepts and their relationships, creating a new type of "source of truth." As a result, corporate and external knowledge can be made more readily accessible to engineers and operations personnel participating in decision making. Digital corporate knowledge can also be supplemented with Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques which can help uncover latent threats and better guide optimal decision making. This is particularly relevant in Workforce, Health & Safety (WH&S) and Process Safety contexts, where the impact of flawed or suboptimal decisions can lead to catastrophic consequences. Practical examples from an oil & gas major show how the risk assessment domain can be represented in a computational knowledge graph, in a format which is comprehensible not only to software developers, but more importantly, to oil & gas SMEs. A presentation of different AI techniques overlaid on top of this computational knowledge graph, can also offer a glimpse of the possibilities of marrying SME expertise with emerging digital technologies.

Résumé :
Implementation of ICT in the educational process has allowed us especially in the last decade to fully develop cognitive and psychomotor skills of students. A typical example is the use of multimedia, through which the learner gradually formed and developed their skills in the area of sensory perception. The authors address issues of multimedia in education in Slovakia and the Czech Republic (Milková, Magdin, Hubálovský ...) indicate that, multimedia applications can be of great assistance in achieving active engagement. Multimedia provides teachers with an excellent chance to demonstrate and visualize the subject matter more clearly and comprehensibly, as well as enabling them to prepare study material that optimizes students' study habits. Moreover, various multimedia applications appropriate to course subject matter may be created by students themselves based on a script given by the teacher and this close cooperation between teacher and students can deepen students' interest in the subject. In the paper we discuss the possibilities of using multimedia teaching specific applications ("blank map"). This multimedia program is determined for support for teaching students, specifically Geography. In the teaching of geography are used also non-textual and image components material. The geographical textbook contains also pictures, graphs, photographs, diagrams, maps, cartograms and cartodiagrams chart and ?blank map?. Some of these elements only illustrate and supplement the curriculum, others may its clearness and visibility very significant contribution to the understanding of its essence. The condition is a level of graphic quality and appropriate textual description, which also may include additional questions or suggestions for the role of self-teaching activity. Working with the map should be part of teaching for teachers and students for practical learning activities during each lesson. It is necessary to illustrate curriculum appropriate examples show how is given process or phenomenon of spatial distribution on the surface. Regularity in the use of maps is essential for students and therefore to acquire the ability to work with maps of different size, scale and content. From what students know see from the map, we can conclude that truly understand the concept of a geographical fact.

Résumé :
Conventional combustion techniques struggle to meet the current emissions’ regulations while retaining high engine efficiency. Specifically in automotive diesel engines, oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions have limited the utilization of diesel fuel in compression ignition engines. By comparison, throttled, knock-limited conventional gasoline operated SI engines tend not to be fuel efficient. Advanced combustion systems that simultaneously address PM and NOx while retaining the high efficiency of modern diesel engines, are being developed around the globe [1]. One of the most difficult problems in the area of advanced combustion technology development is the control of combustion initiation [2] and retaining power density [3]. During the past several years, significant progress has been accomplished in reducing emissions of NOx and PM through strategies such as LTC/HCCI/PCCI/PPCI and other advanced combustion processes; however control of ignition and improving power density has suffered to some degree — advanced combustion engines tend to be limited to the 10 bar BMEP range and under [4]. Experimental investigations have been carried out on a light duty, DI, multi cylinder, diesel automotive engine. The engine is operated in low temperature combustion technology with 87 RON (Research Octane Number) fuel [7]. Using an Ignition Quality Test (IQT) device, the equivalent Cetane Number (CN) was measured to be 25. In the present work, various EGR rates are examined to determine the effect on the combustion, emissions and performance. Experiments were conducted at three different engine load/speed combinations that are part of General Motors’ reference points for vehicle operation. To reduce the complexity, boost pressure and injection pressure and timing were kept constant while EGR percentage and intake temperature were used as parameters in this study. The intake temperature was not truly independent, as it trended with EGR level, but based upon the boost level and the available EGR cooling, Intake Air Temperature (IAT) was kept in the range of 40–80 deg C. Additional cooling capacity will be added in future work in an effort to keep IAT more consistent. EGR rates have a detrimental effect on engine efficiencies at lower load while it appears to have little effect on efficiency at higher loads. A more significant effect at very low load appears to be higher intake temperatures (hot EGR) as opposed to the very slight decrease in oxygen concentration.

Résumé :
The words of ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tsu make the simplest, yet most profound, case for transformation – a change of direction, a fundamental shift in the nature or character of something, recasting the existing order and ways of doing things. This is what the world needs now, as institutions and systems of the past century prove unable to address the challenges of impending planetary disaster, persistent poverty, pandemics, rising fundamentalism and authoritarianism, wars, and everyday violence. Against a background of a worldwide backlash against women’s rights, gender parity in leadership positions – in legislatures, corporations, or civil society – has proved inadequate, as women in these roles often reproduce dominant patriarchal leadership models or propagate ideologies and policies that do not actually advance equality or universal human rights. What is required is truly transformative, visionary leadership, whereby new paradigms, relationships and structures are constructed on the basis of peace, planetary health, and social and economic justice.

Osanami Törngren, Sayaka, et Marcus Nyström. Are Swedes really racially color-blind ? Examination of racial ascription and degree of Swedishness. Malmö University, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.24834/isbn.9789178772735.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This is one of the first studies in Sweden testing the notion of racial color-blindness empirically in a Swedish context, by asking a sample of Swedish participants to assign race to images of faces with different phenotypes, rate how ‘Swedish’ the faces are perceived (referred to the degree of ‘Swedishness’) and identify the skin color of the faces (through the NIS skincolor scale). We also use eye-tracking to explore whether participants look differently at faces of different racial groups. The results show that skin-color is a decisive factor in the racial ascription as Black, while skin color is not determinant of the degree of Swedishness. What determines the degree of Swedishness is the racial assignment itself, in other words, how individuals perceive and categorize phenotypes into different racial groups. We conclude that Swedes are not truly racially color-blind and race does indeed matter in Sweden.

Seginer, Ido, James Jones, Per-Olof Gutman et Eduardo Vallejos. Optimal Environmental Control for Indeterminate Greenhouse Crops. United States Department of Agriculture, août 1997. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/1997.7613034.bard.

Résumé :
Increased world competition, as well as increased concern for the environment, drive all manufacturing systems, including greenhouses, towards high-precision operation. Optimal control is an important tool to achieve this goal, since it finds the best compromise between conflicting demands, such as higher profits and environmental concerns. The report, which is a collection of papers, each with its own abstract, outlines an approach for optimal, model-based control of the greenhouse environment. A reliable crop model is essential for this approach and a significant portion of the effort went in this direction, resulting in a radically new version of the tomato model TOMGRO, which can be used as a prototype model for other greenhouse crops. Truly optimal control of a very complex system requires prohibitively large computer resources. Two routes to model simplification have, therefore, been tried: Model reduction (to fewer state variables) and simplified decision making. Crop model reduction from nearly 70 state variables to about 5, was accomplished by either selecting a subset of the original variables or by forming combinations of them. Model dynamics were then fitted either with mechanistic relationships or with neural networks. To simplify the decision making process, the number of costate variables (control policy parametrs) was recuced to one or two. The dry-matter state variable was transformed in such a way that its costate became essentially constant throughout the season. A quasi-steady-state control algorithm was implemented in an experimental greenhouse. A constant value for the dry-matter costate was able to control simultaneously ventilation and CO2 enrichment by continuously producing weather-dependent optimal setpoints and then maintaining them closely.

for Development Programme, Knowledge. Using Indices to Capture Vulnerability for Development Finance in SIDS. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), avril 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.066.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This rapid review examines evidence on indices to capture vulnerability for development finance in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). A key issue when it comes to aid allocation to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is whether current measures of development – such as income per capita - are truly able to reflect the unique set of challenges that these countries face. Inability to accurately measure development in SIDS can lead to substantial risk. On the one hand, aid allocation that solely relies on income levels may result in an unsustainable reduction in external support to SIDS, leaving them to face high levels of economic, environmental, and social vulnerability. On the other hand, an inadequate measure of vulnerability can lead to no clear pathway to the reduction in aid, making it very improbable for SIDS to become self-reliant, no matter how far they develop or climb the income ladder. This aim of this paper is twofold. The first is to look at whether vulnerability indices can help determine the levels of external support SIDS need. The second is to consider how this can help in determining when support can be reduced or terminated. This is achieved by considering the different indices that international organisations and multilateral development banks use to capture the vulnerability of SIDS, how they use these indices to determine thresholds for aid allocation, and the advantages and disadvantages of applying each.

Hillestad, Torgeir Martin. The Metapsychology of Evil : Main Theoretical Perspectives Causes, Consequences and Critique. University of Stavanger, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.31265/usps.224.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The purpose of this text or dissertation is to throw some basic light on a fundamental problem concerning manhood, namely the question of evil, its main sources, dynamics and importance for human attitudes and behaviour. The perspective behind the analysis itself is that of psychology. Somebody, or many, may feel at bit nervous by the word “evil” itself. It may very well be seen as too connected to religion, myth and even superstition. Yet those who are motivated to lose oneself in the subject retain a deep interest in human destructiveness, malevolence and hate, significant themes pointing at threatening prospects for mankind. The text is organized or divided into four main ordinary chapters, the three first of them organized or divided into continuous and numbered sections. A crucial point or question is of cause how to define evil itself. It can of cause be done both intentional, instrumental and by consequence. Other theorists however have stated that the concept of evil exclusively rests on a myth originated in the Judean-Christian conception of Satan and ultimate evil. This last argument presupposes evil itself as non-existent in the real rational world. It seems however a fact that most people attach certain basic meaning to the concept, mainly that it represents ultimately bad and terrible actions and behaviour directed toward common people for the purpose of bringing upon them ultimate pain and suffer. However, there is no room for essentialism here, meaning that we simply can look “inside” some original matter to get to know what it “really” is. Rather, a phenomenon gets its identity from the constituted meaning operating within a certain human communities and contexts loaded with intentionality and inter-subjective meaning. As mentioned above, the concept of evil can be interpreted both instrumental and intentional, the first being the broadest of them. Here evil stands for behaviour and human deeds having terrifying or fatal consequences for subjects and people or in general, regardless of the intentions behind. The intentional interpretation however, links the concept to certain predispositions, characteristics and even strong motives in subjects, groups and sometimes political systems and nations. I will keep in mind and clear the way for both these perspectives for the discussion in prospect. This essay represents a psychological perspective on evil, but makes it clear that a more or less complete account of such a psychological view also should include a thorough understanding or integration of some basic social and even biological assumptions. However, I consider a social psychological position of significant importance, especially because in my opinion it represents some sort of coordination of knowledge and theoretical perspectives inherent in the subject or problem itself, the main task here being to integrate perspectives of a psychological as well as social and biological kind. Since humans are essential social creatures, the way itself to present knowledge concerning the human condition, must be social of some sort and kind, however not referring to some kind of reductionism where social models of explanation possess or holds monopoly. Social and social psychological perspectives itself represents parts of the whole matter regarding understanding and explanation of human evil. The fact that humans present, or has to represent themselves as humans among other humans, means that basically a social language is required both to explain and describe human manners and ways of being. This then truly represents its own way or, more correctly, level or standard of explanation, which makes social psychology some sort of significant, though not sufficient. More substantial, the vision itself of integrating different ontological and theoretical levels and objects of science for the purpose of manifesting or make real a full-fledged psychological perspective on evil, should be considered or characterized a meta-psychological perspective. The text is partially constructed as a review of existing theories and theorists concerning the matter of evil and logically associated themes such as violence, mass murder, genocide, antisocial behaviour in general, aggression, hate and cruelty. However, the demands of making a theoretical distinction between these themes, although connected, is stressed. Above all, an integral perspective combining different scientific disciplines is aimed at.
