Abstract This article argues for intralingual intertemporal translations as a separate category within the field of translation studies. Not only do these translations seem to have common characteristics and behaviors, but it is precisely their particularities that make them a key to understanding more ‘typical’ translations. Two main sets of examples will serve as demonstration: translations from Old French into Middle and Modern French, and a Modern Hebrew translation of the Old Testament, originally written in Biblical Hebrew, as well as the public discussion following its publication.

The fact that the existing Russian translations of the four famous ballads by the French 15th-c. poet François Villon are plagued by tentativeness and inaccuracy calls for a new translation, based on consistent preservation of the original’s imagery and meaning in each and every line. The texts of the ballads, their rendering from the language of the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance into contemporary French, and materials on the poet’s biography and possible autobiographical allusions in the selected ballads come from the latest French editions of F. Villon’s complete works prepared by renowned experts such as Claude Thiry (1991) and Jacqueline Cerquiglini-Toulet (2014 and 2020). The translations are accompanied by the proposed article, which, together with the commentary to the ballads, makes use of research undertaken by foreign scholars over the past decades. The author also examines the compelling hypotheses put forward by the German scholar of Romance studies Gert Pinkernell (1937–2017). To sum up, Russian-speaking scholars and readers are offered a new annotated philological translation of four ballads by F. Villon.

The relations between the verbal component, the visual component, and the translational aspect of a given text have been discussed and described by translation scholars and semioticians in a diversity of manners. A significant graphic element may be introduced during the translation production, usually in dialogue with the verbal one, thus creating a new intersemiotic text. Medieval manuscripts are known for offering their readers illustrations, miniatures, rubrics, decorated initials, colored and gilded details, and other visual ingredients. As a result, the codex functions as an essential interpretive agent rather than a passive container for verbal texts. This model of the intricate illuminated manuscript was imported into modern culture systems through transfer. However, in reality, most manuscripts exhibit simple decorative schemes or are plain and unadorned, which means that ornaments in their current versions most likely derive from the model mentioned above. The paper looks at the productivity of this medieval model by examining various visual components inserted into the printed modern French translations based on the unmistakably plain manuscript of the thirteenth-century work Aucassin et Nicolette. The analysis will focus on the illustrated translations, addressing the added elements and their characteristics, their relation to the model, the increased determinacy they create, and the resulting reading they seem to encourage. We will suggest that even the narration levels and the performative aspect of the text may be affected by the new, intersemiotic nature bestowed upon this ancient text through the integration of other modalities into its translations.

AbstractAlthough the works of Homer remained unknown in Western Europe for much of the Middle Ages, their reappearance was welcomed enthusiastically in France toward the end of the fifteenth century by the small band of scholars capable of reading Greek. The founding of the Collège des lecteurs royaux in 1530 gave a fillip to Homeric studies, and partial editions of Homer were printed in Paris, aimed at a student audience. French translations also helped to bring the poems to a wider audience. However, the question of the interpretation of Homer was central to the reception of the two epics, and, after examining the publishing history, this paper sets out to assess how succeeding generations of scholars set about reading and teaching the prince of poets.

Whereas object pronouns regularly occurred before the main verb in Old and early Middle English, such word orders were to a large extent lost in Middle English prose by the end of the thirteenth century. Nevertheless, some isolated later texts still show regular preverbal occurrences of object pronouns. Such word orders are most frequent with three texts that are translations of French sources. This article closely examines one of these texts, the Middle English prose Brut, and its source, and argues that contact influence is the most plausible explanation for its distinct behaviour with respect to object pronoun placement. It is also shown that the translator does not slavishly follow his source and that the contact effects are mainly of the statistical type in that word orders occurring very marginally in other texts appear with high frequencies in the Brut while such a contrast is not found for a word order that is unattested elsewhere. These observations are compatible with the equally exceptional but slightly different distribution of object pronouns in another translation from French, the Ayenbite of Inwyt. The findings of this article show that translation-induced contact and, possibly, contact in bilingual language use more generally can have important quantitative effects and that these have to be seriously considered in any syntactic analysis of historical texts based on a foreign source text.

Abstract Lanfranc of Milan is considered as one of the most influential surgeons of the late Middle Ages and his Latin works – the Chirurgia parva and the Chirurgia magna – have informed surgical practice until the 16th century. The importance of his works (1293/1294 and 1296) is witnessed by the large number of vernacular translations produced after their original compilation. Overall, three High German translations of Lanfranc’s Chirurgia parva have come down to us: 1. the significantly shortened version transmitted in Vatican City, MS Pal. Lat, 1117; 2. the integral version preserved in Kalocsa, Cathedral Library, MS 376 and in Erlangen, University Library, MS B 3; and 3. the early modern printed translation by Otto Brunfels. Even though the Latin source of these translations has never been identified precisely, it has been traditionally taken for granted that they were based on a Latin model. Nevertheless, a series of correspondences between the two manuscript versions and the French translation transmitted in Bern, Burgerbi­bliothek, MS A 85.2 seem to indicate that a vernacular source is also possible. In this study, the two German manuscript translations of Lanfranc’s Chirurgia parva will be taken into consideration with respect to the problems connected with the identification of their source(s), trying to ascertain whether they are really based on a Latin model, or, as suggested by Claude De Tovar, they are rather connected with the French vernacularization of the text witnessed by the Bern manuscript.

AbstractFourteenthand fifteenth-century medicine is characterised by a trickle-down effect which led to an increasing dissemination of knowledge in the vernacular. In this context, translations and compilations appear to be two similar endeavours aiming to provide access to contents pertaining to the particulars of medical practice. Nowhere is this phenomenon seen more clearly than in vernacular manuscripts on surgery. Our study proposes to compare for the first time two corpora of manuscripts of surgical compilations, in Middle French and Middle English respectively, in order to discuss form and matter in this type of book production.

Abstract This paper aims to get a better insight into the material, literary and historical context surrounding two important, but neglected or unknown, evidences of the dissemination of Castillan literature in the French literature at the end of the Middle Ages. The French translations of Diego de Valera’s Crónica abreviada de España o Valeriana, on the one part, and of Pero López de Ayala’s Crónicas, on the other part, were both achieved between 1504–1506 for the last « Duke of Burgundy » Philip the Fair. Through the investigation of the surviving manuscripts, of the paratext and of the content of these two French texts, will be argued that Vasco de Lucena or Fernando de Lucena are two ideal candidates for their attribution. Moreover, the paper will offer a new perspective on a major evidence of the History of the Castillan language : the Epistola latina et hispanica.

AbstractThis article concerns five French prepositions that mark an inclusion relation and are ordinarily considered to be synonyms of dans ‘in’. The first is a simple preposition: parmi ‘among’. The other four are complex prepositions built from nouns of internal location (au centre de ‘at the centre of’, au milieu de ‘in the middle of’) and from names of body parts (au cœur de ‘at the heart of’ and au sein de whose word-for-word translation is ‘at the breast/bosom of’ but stands for ‘within’ ‘in’ or ‘among’ depending on the context). We will examine them from two different, yet complementary points of view. As part of a statistical approach, we use an association measure to determine the distributional trends of each preposition. In addition, we explore in greater detail the semantic mechanisms brought into play using the theoretical framework of Cognitive Grammar. This double analysis leads us to demonstrate that these prepositions are far from synonymous and involve very different types of constraints.

Abstract This paper offers the first survey of evidence for the translation of Middle English literature beyond the English-speaking world in the medieval period. It identifies and discusses translations in five vernaculars: Welsh, Irish, Old Norse-Icelandic, Dutch, and Portuguese. The paper examines the contexts in which such translation took place and considers the role played by colonial, dynastic, trading, and ecclesiastical networks in the transmission of these works. It argues that English is in the curious position of being a vernacular with a reasonable international reach in translation, but often with relatively low literary and cultural prestige. It is evident that most texts translated from English in this period are works which themselves are based on sources in other languages, and it seems probable that English-language texts are often convenient intermediaries for courtly or devotional works more usually transmitted in French or Latin.

This thesis will investigate the processes of translation and rewriting (réécriture) in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, through a study of the French and Italian Merlin corpus. In particular, it will focus upon the products of translation between vernacular languages, which, as a practice, displays a greater degree of heterogeneity than translations into the vernacular from Latin. Medieval translation will be studied through a comparative analysis of the story of Merlin’s conception in Robert de Boron’s Merlin and Paulino Pieri’s La Storia di Merlino, in addition to an examination of the translation of Merlin’s prophecies as recounted in the Prophecies de Merlin, the Storia and the Vita di Merlino. These instances of translation will be compared to and studied alongside the processes of intralingual réécriture. Rewriting within the French tradition will be investigated through an analysis of the interpretative transition from the Vulgate Estoire de Merlin to the Post-Vulgate Suite du Merlin; in particular, the reinterpretations of Merlin’s prophetic discourse and the character of Merlin’s lover, Viviane, will be examined. The study will take as its methodological basis the semiotic theory of Charles Sanders Peirce, particularly the concept of semiosis; this defines interpretation as an exchange of signs, through which meaning is transmitted and developed. In this way, the Merlin corpus will be regarded as a continuum of interpretation, through which the meaning of narratives is interpreted by other signs, thought patterns and extra-textual cultural discourses; more broadly, the whole medieval tradition of translation and réécriture will also be regarded as a part of this same continuum, displaying the same interpretative patterns.

Esta tese de doutorado apresenta algumas contribuições para a construção de uma teoria do paratexto do livro traduzido. A teoria do paratexto, que tem por sua obra seminal Paratextos editoriais, de Gérard Genette, não inclui como objeto de análise esse tipo de paratexto. A proposta desta tese é, portanto, complementar a teorização de Genette, contemplando um tipo específico de paratexto do livro traduzido, o prefácio/posfácio do tradutor, com interesse especial pelos prefácios/posfácios do tradutor que tratam da tradução e do projeto tradutório. Os aportes teóricos utilizados são os oriundos dos Estudos de Tradução, Historiografia da Tradução e Teoria dos Gêneros Discursivos, com base em observações recolhidas na pesquisa em um corpus constituído por obras literárias francesas traduzidas no Brasil a partir de meados do século XX, em sua maioria parte integrante do acervo da Biblioteca Nacional no Rio de Janeiro.
This Ph.D. dissertation provides with some contributions to the construction of a theory of paratext of the translated book. The theory of paratext is mainly based on the seminal work by Gérard Genette, Seuils, in which the author doesn t enter the field of this kind of paratext. Therefore, this dissertation aims at complementing the theorization by Genette, focusing on the analysis of translators prefaces/postfaces and, among them, of prefaces/postfaces in which translators talk about the translation and their translation project. The theory approaches employed in this work came from Translation Studies, Translation Historiography and the Theory of Textual/Discoursive Genres, based on data gathered in the research of a corpus compounded of French literary works translated in Brazil and published since the middle of the 20th century. The books selected to be examined are part of the collection of the Brazilian National Library, located in Rio de Janeiro, mainly.

This dissertation focuses on the intercultural relations between the French-speaking and Dutch-speaking world in Holland in the first half of the fifteenth century. After a turbulent war of succession between the claimants Jacqueline of Bavaria and her uncle John the Pitiless, the counties of Holland, Zeeland and Hainault were incorporated into the largely francophone Burgundian empire. It has been suggested that this event marked the end of a flourishing period of cultural production in the Dutch vernacular at the court of Holland. However, as it seems, throughout the fifteenth century translations of French texts were produced for regional and local administrators. Possibly, the Burgundian regional government of Holland, which consisted of foreign as well as indigenous noblemen, may have played an important role in the dissemination of these texts. In this thesis, the subject is addressed by means of the contextualisation of the Middle Dutch version of Jean Froissart’s Chroniques. An analysis of documentary sources suggests that the comital residence at the Hague is best characterised as a multicultural environment inhabited by both bilingual and monolingual individuals. The results of an analysis of the variant readings in the French manuscripts of the Chroniques as compared to its Dutch counterpart show that the French manuscript which served as a model for the translation was probably produced between 1410 and 1418 by the Parisian libraire Pierre de Liffol. A comparison of the translated and original text shows that the translator wants to provide his readership with a text that is optimally intelligible and relevant to their context. Gerijt Potter’s modifications show that his intended audience was familiar with the habits of European courts and had a considerable geographical horizon. Because of the presence of doublets, repetitions and French loans, Potter’s style of writing resembles the official style of the comital chancery. However, a similar style is also found in other late fourteenth and early fifteenth-century translations. In The Hague the translation was probably dispersed (be it on a small scale) among members of the council and their contacts among the high nobility of Holland. Through the intensive contact between the regional councillors and members of local administration, the translation of the Chroniques became available to an audience in the cities.

This thesis explores the first English translations of Molière's works published between 1663 and 1732 by writers that include John Dryden, Edward Ravenscroft, Aphra Behn, and Henry Fielding. It challenges the idea that the translators straightforwardly plagiarized the French plays and instead argues that their work demonstrates engagement with the dramatic impact and satirical drive of the source texts. It asks how far the process of anglicization required careful examination of the plays' initial French national context. The first part of the thesis presents three fundamental angles of interrogation addressing how the translators dealt with the form of the dramatic works according to theoretical and practical principles. It considers translators' responses to conventions of plot formation, translation methods, and prosody. The chapters are underpinned by comparative assessments of contextual theoretical writings in French and English in order to examine the plays in the light of the evolving theatrical tastes and literary practices occasioned by cross-Channel communication. The second part takes an alternative approach to assessing the earliest translations of Molière. Its four chapters are based on close analysis of culturally significant lexical terms which evoke comically contentious social themes. This enquiry charts the changes in translation-choices over the decades covered by the thesis corpus. The themes addressed, however, were relevant throughout the period in both France and England: marital discord caused by anxieties surrounding cuckoldry and gallantry, the problems of zealous religious ostentation, the dubious professional standing of medical practitioners, and bourgeois social pretension. This part assesses how the key terms in translation were chosen to resonate within the new semantic fields in English, a target language which was coming into close contact with new French terms.

The first French translation of Valerius Maximus constitutes one of the main unpublished works in the medieval French literary production; it can be considered instrumental for a better comprehension of the development of the French branch of Humanism in general, and the diffusion of Italian and Latin texts in fourteenthcentury France in particular. Further expanding the studies of Giuseppe Di Stefano and according to the project of the University of Turin, we propose the first critical edition of the section of the text translated and glossed by Nicolas de Gonesse (books VII 5 - IX) based on manuscript Paris, BnF, français 282. Moreover, we present new data on the manuscript tradition and additional analysis of this work

This descriptive, sociolinguistic study examines six middle grade children's perceptions and productions of English and French written narratives in a suburban Montreal English Protestant, French Immersion school in the province of Quebec during the period of one school year. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the children's perceptions of writing stories in English and French and strategies for writing stories in two languages and classrooms. Interviews were transcribed, coded for emerging patterns and interpreted as socially negotiated texts. A secondary purpose was to analyze their use of temporal perspectives, verb forms for self chosen English and French written stories. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, means and percentages were utilized in data analysis. Major findings of this study were the following: (1) Across interviews in both English and French the children are very consistent in their perceptions of story writing in L2 as being more complex than in L1. (2) They perceive the writing of narrative in English and French to involve a culturally organized system of strategies and values learned in specific contexts of situations. (3) The use of varied interviewing techniques serves as a cross validation of children's perceptions. (4) The children have similar and systematic ways of assigning tense to their stories in both languages. (5) The children were exposed to contradictory models of language instruction and narrative discourse. The teachers' models of language learning, narrative discourse influenced the children's perceptions of themselves as language learners and story writers. (6) The six children provide evidence to support the hypothesis that there might be a single processing mechanism across languages that is flexible enough to handle differences among bilingual children in their perceptions of and use of strategies for writing stories in English and French. Findings from this study suggest that the relationship between first and second language learning is more similar than different. Direct teaching of linguistic forms can have a deleterious effect on children's written productions and perceptions of themselves as language learners. Large scale, product analysis studies, may no longer be a viable way to tap and assess the language, narrative competence and performance of bilingual children.

Contrary to assumptions within existing scholarship on Paul Celan's poetics, this thesis demonstrates that surrealist aesthetics were a significant discourse within Celan's poetics, in particular in die theories articulated in his Buchner Prize speech (1960). By mapping the points of convergence and divergence between specific surrealist ideas and particular elements of Celan's poetics, it demonstrates that the most significant point of contact between die two sets of aesthetics lies in the surrealist idea of a sustained tension between the unconscious and conscious realms, and between the past and die present, which elucidates Celan's well-known 'meridian' metaphor. The study thus develops new interpretations of Celan's theories, in particular in its assertion of the primacy of unconscious impulses in Celan's view of poetic language. Its conclusions thereby impact on an understanding not only of the specific status of the surrealist discourse in Celan's aesthetics, but also of the shifting relationship between poetic language and die poet's and readers' conscious and unconscious realities and of the intentional and unintentional cultural encounters that impact on linguistic and literary7 signification. The inquiry' focuses on verifiable and concrete points of contact between Celan's writings and surrealist texts, in the form of his translations of surrealist poems, his poetological notes and his correspondence. Recently published correspondence and theoretical writings by Celan reveal that he considered poetry to be composed in part as a result of unconscious impulses, which become visible during translation. Close readings of Celan's versions of surrealist poems demonstrate that these translations both illustrate and thematise this textual Unconscious, and so exhibit the metapoetic content of Celan's translations. By focusing in particular on the surrealist aspects of the original poems translated by Celan, and on Celan's transformation of these features into metapoetic figures, these readings therefore demonstrate the poetological significance of Celan's encounter with surrealism, and culminate in a new conceptualisation of his poetics of translation.

This thesis studies the interaction between language, people and culture in England in the century either side of 1300 by analysing the use of French in three Middle English texts: Laȝamon's Brut, Kyng Alisaunder, and Handlyng Synne. I explore the ways in which these texts exploit the sociocultural implications of French elements to negotiate the expression of collective identity, and consider what that suggests about the texts' audiences. This exploration also provides insights into the sociolinguistic relation between English and French. Specifically, I add to recent work on multilingualism within texts by providing a more systematic approach than has been adopted hitherto. Since this period saw the largest influx of French-derived vocabulary in English, evaluating the use of French elements requires consideration of the extent to which that vocabulary had become integrated in English. This aspect has not so far been included in studies of multilingualism in texts, and in approaching it this thesis brings together previous work on loanwords to offer a systematic methodology. Chapters 2 to 4 treat the lexis of the individual texts. Study of the broader context of the French elements in chapter 5 shows that they are distributed evenly across the texts and the majority are introduced independently of the source texts. Those that were carried over from the source texts were not adopted into Middle English more generally. Appeal to a specific register better explains the appearance of clusters. Chapter 6 concludes that the implications of the French elements in these texts centre on the negotiation of social and cultural identity. No clear support was found for the use or avoidance of French elements to express ethnic or religious identity in these texts. The style of both versions of Laȝamon's Brut was confirmed to be the result of redactors' choices and not the state of the language as a whole, since most French-derived words in either version were apparently well integrated by 1300. On a larger scale, the amount of well-integrated lexis of French origin in Handlyng Synne demonstrates the extent to which French-derived vocabulary had become accessible as early as 1300. Lastly, the atypical, specialised French elements in Kyng Alisaunder are best explained by supposing its initial audience included those with extensive knowledge of French. This supports the hypothesis of continuity of audience between French and Middle English literary culture.

It is noted that translation is a creation in itself, and the activities of representatives of the Nakhchivan literary environment in this area are exemplary. In general, during the independence period, some experience was gained in the literary environment of Nakhchivan, translations from German, English and French by our poets and writers Hamid Arzulu, Shirmammad Gulubeyli, Shamil Zaman who is famous as poet, prose-writer and translator were delivered to readers in the form of books and works were published in the press. The examples presented in the article once again prove the perfection of the writers' translation activities, their translations from German, English and French provide the Azerbaijani reader with full information about the society, people and their life of these peoples. It has often been argued that the picaresque genre derived from the Lazarillo castigado, if not from the Guzmán de Alfarache, more than from the original Lazarillo. Such an assumption neglects the fact that the first French and English translations did rely on the 1554 text, whose influence, conveyed by the 1555 sequel also translated in French in 1598, did last until the early 17th century. Probably designed in an Erasmian circle, the anticlerical satire, enhanced by provoking allusions to certain catholic dogmas, did not pass unnoticed: the marginal comments of the translations, for instance, testify for a strong interest for this theme. It is no wonder, therefore, if the first satirical narratives freely inspired by the Lazarillo, such like The Unfortunate Traveller by Nashe, the Euphormio Lusinini Satyricon by Barclay, or the Première journée by Viau, adapted its religious satire to their own actuality: in the context of the rise of libertine thinking, characters of Jesuits and Puritans could become new targets for novelistic scenes based on an obviously “lazarillesque” model.

While in the Western societies the act of translating was a phenomenon that had a powerful tradition which started long before the sixteenth century, in the Romanian Principalities the first timid attempts were recorded at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Taking into account the translations accomplished by the nineteenth Romanian women writers and the large range of languages (French, Italian, Greek, Latin, German, English, Spanish) they used, I have tried to “discover” and “revive” as many women writers as I could, first of all by focusing all my attention on the works of the neglected women (writers) translators. The present research, which limits only to Romanian women writers that translated writings of foreign women authors, needs also a special attention to finding biographical data about the translators since a lot of them used pen names (few writers used even more than three pen names) or signed their writing or translations only with the initial letters of their names, especially for the works published in installments. There is a significant amount of research in order to bring to light all the translated works since most of them can be found only in (incomplete) issues of journals, almanacs, literary magazines, theatre’s journals, or manuscripts. By using the international database Women Writers in History we may involve researchers and students from many European countries in contributing with important information concerning their women writers. There are also negotiations with national libraries in 25 countries around Europe in order to get partners for this database which offers open access.

Many studies have shown the trend that students’ conceptualisations of scientific phenomena are limited to the ontological category of objects. The ontological category of processes, on the other hand, is not developed enough to build valid scientific mental models (Chi , 2005; Ferrari and Chi, 1998; Vosniadou, 1991). A correct conceptualisation of any scientific concept results from a proper understanding of object properties and processes involving these objects. Moreover, Pata and Sarapuu (2003) have raised the problem that the traditional way to teach science is usually focused on the ontological category of objects. The active-learning idea, coming from constructivism, predicts that virtual manipulations improve deeper learning (Evans and Gibbons, 2007). With interactive activities, learners are the main actors of their own construction of scientific concepts. According to this approach, deeper conceptualisation will be enhanced when manipulations are possible. In the context of web-based learning, some manipulatives, which are defined as movable representations or movable objects on the computer screen (Moyer et al., 2002), can be used to create interactivity. This study investigates the students’ ontological understanding in a virtual learning environment and the effect of manipulatives on the students’ construction of ontological conceptions. More precisely, this work attempts to answer the following research questions: (1) What is the learners’ understanding about ontological category of objects comparing to ontological category of processes? (2) How do manipulatives and non-manipulatives help learners to conceptualise through ontological categories? A process-based virtual learning environment, “Cell World” (http://bio.edu.ee/models/fr/), was applied by 59 French students of junior year of high school in sciences (aged 16-17). The sample consisted of students from three average level French schools. The results presented in this paper were drawn from a pilot survey using the model translation of “Cell World”. In this model, students can move each manipulative from the store (on the left of the screen) to the area of animations where non-manipulatives are (on the right of the screen). If the selected manipulative is incorrect, learners receive a feedback which instructs them to drag the correct manipulative in order to continue the translation process. If the manipulative is correct, the animation continues so that students can observe interaction processes involving directly manipulatives (e.g. interaction between tRNA and mRNA) and/or only non-manipulatives (e.g. the fixing process of ribosome onto mRNA molecule). For leading students to use the environment correctly, a worksheet containing instructions was developed. Moreover, the worksheet also consisted of ten questions to investigate students’ understanding about ontological categories of objects (four questions) and processes (six questions). The questions about processes lead students to think in term of emergent interactions between objects. Questions about objects lead students to use factual knowledge about the properties of molecules. These questions involve also either manipulatives or non-manipulatives to investigate the role of interactivity on students’ conceptions. In order to obtain results about learners’ understanding of ontological categories, students were grouped according to their results about the two categories of questions, objects and processes: 43 students out of 59 expressed a high level of objects’ understanding – they obtained at least two-third of maximum points, whereas only 29 students expressed a high level of processes’ understanding. The Wilcoxon signed-ranks test also revealed significant differences (Z=-3.803, P<0.001) between the answers of the two categories of questions (objects and processes): 45 students demonstrated better performances concerning questions about objects than about processes, 13 answered better about objects and one was equal in both categories. Thus, the results provide evidence that the ontological category of processes is significantly less constructed and understood than the objects’ category. For studying the role of manipulatives on the student’s ontological categories of objects and processes, a Wilcoxon signed-ranks test was used. The test compared questions about objects involving manipulatives and questions about non-manipulatives: 45 students obtained better results about manipulable molecules, 10 students about non-manipulable and only 4 learners performed with non-manipulable as well as manipulable molecules (Z=-3.868, P<0.001). Another Wilcoxon signed-ranks test was used to compare students’ answers about processes when manipulatives or non-manipulatives were available in theses processes: 47 students obtained better results concerning category of processes when these processes involved manipulable molecules. Seven students performed better when processes involved non-manipulable molecule and 5 learners got the same results for manipulable and non-manipulable molecules (Z=-5.070, P<0.001). Thus, the great majority of the students showed better understanding in both ontological categories – objects and processes, when manipulatives were involved. In conclusion, these outcomes confirm precedent works: the ontological category of processes is not developed enough to build valid scientific mental models. Thus, the main challenge for teaching scientific phenomena is to lead learners to think through ontological category of processes.
