Résumé :
The theory of translation-invariant operators on various spaces of functions (or measures or distributions) is a well-trodden field. The problem is to decide, first, whether or not a linear operator between two function spaces on, say, ℝ or ℝ+ which commutes with one or many translations on the two spaces is necessarily continuous, and, second, to give a canonical form for all such continuous operators. In some cases each such operator is zero. The second problem is essentially the ‘multiplier problem’, and it has been extensively discussed; see [7], for example.

Résumé :
AbstractWe provide a method of translating theories of Nute's defeasible logic into logic programs, and a corresponding translation in the opposite direction. Under certain natural restrictions, the conclusions of defeasible theories under the ambiguity propagating defeasible logic ADL correspond to those of the well-founded semantics for normal logic programs, and so it turns out that the two formalisms are closely related. Using the same translation of logic programs into defeasible theories, the semantics for the ambiguity blocking defeasible logic NDL can be seen as indirectly providing an ambiguity blocking semantics for logic programs. We also provide antimonotone operators for both ADL and NDL, each based on the Gelfond–Lifschitz (GL) operator for logic programs. For defeasible theories without defeaters or priorities on rules, the operator for ADL corresponds to the GL operator and so can be seen as partially capturing the consequences according to ADL. Similarly, the operator for NDL captures the consequences according to NDL, though in this case no restrictions on theories apply. Both operators can be used to define stable model semantics for defeasible theories.

The formulation in the explicit form of quantum expression of the one-dimensional translation operator as well as Hermitian operator of momentum and its eigenfunctions are presented. The interrelation between the momentum and the wave number has been generalized for the processes with a non-integer dimensionality α. The proof of the fractional representation of the translation operator is considered. Some aspects of the translations in graduate spaces and their integral representation, as well as applications in physics are discussed. The integral representation of the translation operator is proposed.

The hyperbolic algebra [Formula: see text], studied recently by Katavolos and Power [5], is the weak star closed operator algebra on L2(ℝ) generated by H∞(ℝ), as multiplication operators, and by the dilation operators Vt, t≥0, given by Vtf(x)=et/2f(etx). We show that [Formula: see text] is a reflexive operator algebra and that the four-dimensional manifold [Formula: see text] (with the natural topology) is the reflexive hull of a natural two-dimensional subspace.

Résumé :
In this work, we develop the theory of hyperbolic equations with Bessel operators. We construct and invert hyperbolic potentials generated by multidimensional generalized translation. Chapter 1 contains necessary notation, definitions, auxiliary facts and results. In Chapter 2, we study some generalized weight functions related to a quadratic form. These functions are used below to construct fractional powers of hyperbolic operators and solutions of hyperbolic equations with Bessel operators. Chapter 3 is devoted to hyperbolic potentials generated by multidimensional generalized translation. These potentials express negative real powers of the singular wave operator, i. e. the wave operator where the Bessel operator acts instead of second derivatives. The boundedness of such an operator and its properties are investigated and the inverse operator is constructed. The hyperbolic Riesz B-potential is studied as well in this chapter. In Chapter 4, we consider various methods of solution of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation. We obtain solutions of the Cauchy problems for homogeneous and nonhomogeneous equations of this type. In Conclusion, we discuss general methods of solution for problems with arbitrary singular operators.

Delsarte [2], Povzner [9], Levitan [8], Leblanc [7], Dunford and Schwartz [3] (p. 1626) and Hutson and Pym [5] have discussed generalized translation operators (GTO) ‘associating with a differential operator’. The latter authors have also considered the topic in an abstract setting-the GTO ‘associates’ with a compact operator in a normed space. GTO are to have properties generalizing those of the translation operators defined by members of a group on a vector space E of functions defined on the group:(πεE, s and t are group elements). In the case of a locally compact topological group the integration spaces E = L1,L2,L∞, for a Haar measure of the group, are of especial interest.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT Reovirus mRNAs are efficiently translated within host cells despite the absence of 3′ polyadenylated tails. The 3′ nontranslated regions (3′NTRs) of reovirus mRNAs contain sequences that exhibit a high degree of gene-segment-specific conservation. To determine whether the 3′NTRs of reovirus mRNAs serve to facilitate efficient translation of viral transcripts, we used T7 RNA polymerase to express constructs engineered with full-length S4 gene cDNA or truncation mutants lacking sequences in the 3′NTR. Full-length and truncated s4 mRNAs were translated using rabbit reticulocyte lysates, and translation product ς3 was quantitated by phosphorimager analysis. In comparison to full-length s4 mRNA, translation of the s4 mRNA lacking the 3′NTR resulted in a 20 to 50% decrease in ς3 produced. Addition to translation reactions of an RNA oligonucleotide corresponding to the S4 3′NTR significantly enhanced translation of full-length s4 mRNA but had no effect on s4 mRNA lacking 3′NTR sequences. Translation of s4 mRNAs with smaller deletions within the 3′NTR identified a discrete region capable of translational enhancement and a second region capable of translational repression. Differences in translational efficiency of full-length and deletion-mutant mRNAs were independent of RNA stability. Protein complexes in reticulocyte lysates that specifically interact with the S4 3′NTR were identified by RNA mobility shift assays. RNA oligonucleotides lacking either enhancer or repressor sequences did not efficiently compete the binding of these complexes to full-length 3′NTR. These results indicate that the reovirus S4 gene 3′NTR contains a translational operator sequence that serves to regulate translational efficiency of the s4 mRNA. Moreover, these findings suggest that cellular proteins interact with reovirus 3′NTR sequences to regulate translation of the nonpolyadenylated reovirus mRNAs.

Résumé :
This Ph.D. final dissertation studies some analytical properties of the p-de Branges spaces, Hp(E), made up of entire functions and extensively studied in the last thirty years. Besides the first two chapters, where I recall the main properties of the p-de Branges spaces, the rest of the thesis gathers my research work: in the second part, Boundedness of operators, I look for some necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness of the translation operators in H2(E) and subsequently for the continuity of the embedding operator ιp,q from Hp(E) into Hq(E). In the third part, Duality results, I characterize the dual of some 1-de Branges spaces. Firstly, I describe the dual of the 1-Bernstein spaces and then I extend the reasonings to some others 1-de Branges spaces.

Barrachina, Civera Xavier. « Distributional chaos of C0-semigroups of operators ».

This work focuses on the replicase translational operator (TR) stem loop of the RNA MS2 bacteriophage. Single stranded RNA (ss RNA) viruses are important organisms as they represent pathogenic species in all walks of life including a number of clinically important species such as HIV, Marburg Virus and Ebola. MS2 provides a great model system in which to study regulatory pathways affected by RNA folds due to the extensive biochemical and structural data available. In MS2 the TR stem loop acts as an allosteric switch, via a sequence specific recognition event involving the phage coat protein. Binding of the coat protein dimer to TR signals a switch in the life cycle of the phage from replication to assembly and release. Binding of the coat protein dimer leads to translational repression the viral replicase cistron and also leads to an allosteric conformational change in the protein. TR also contains the AUG start codon for replicase gene and thus is involved in the regulatory pathway of the cistron. Thus any insight to how the folds in the RNA effect binding or translational repression are important for understanding the MS2 virus and other ssRNA viruses like it. The folding ensembles present in solution for a series of RNA oligonucleotides that encompass TR have been examined. Single molecule fluorescence assays suggest that these RNAs exist in solution as differentially base paired/stacked states at equilibrium. What emerges from the experimental is data consistent with an unfolding mechanism in which interruptions to the A- form duplex such as the single stranded loop, the free ends and bulged base of TR, act as nucleation points of unfolding. Additionally substitution of a uracil to a cytosine in the loop causes heterogeneity in the folded and unfolded ensembles relative to the wild-type molecule. This data is used to study folding of the RNAs by 'steered' molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. These show remarkable agreement with experimental data and provide atomistic detail on the molecular interactions which take place during the unfolding pathways studied. The adopted conformers for each simulation provide details about hydrogen bonding between the base pairs of the stem and confirm predicted conformers from apparent dye separation in FRET experiments.

Résumé :
In this study, the role of translation in the introduction of Chinese xiqu into the United States is examined using an anthropological approach. This study identifies three encounters that exemplify the three critical stages of acceptance of xiqu in the United States, and examines how translation operates and functions as a tool of cultural mediation in the introduction and promotion of xiqu there. The three critical encounters this study identifies are: the 19th century performance tours of Cantonese opera in San Francisco, the 1930s tour of Mei Lan-fang to the U.S., and the 2006 tour of Kenneth Pai's production of the Young Lover's Edition of the Peony Pavilion to the U.S. An ethnohistoric approach is adopted to reconstruct the contexts of the translators' decision-making with the purpose of highlighting the human factor in the process. Translations, first-hand paratextual materials and data collected in interviews facilitate the triangulation of analysis and verification. The result offers a critical understanding of translation in a cultural dissemination process by analyzing xiqu with an emphasis on the human factor.

Our aim was to study the issue of literary translation when it is carried into the B language of the translator (here from Korean to French) with the assistance of a co-translator native speaker of the target language and to point out the conditions of success. In the field of literary translation from Korean into French, this kind of team-work aims at overcoming the lack of French translators able to produce literary standard translations by themselves. When the translation is done by a Korean translator working into his B language, a thorough work of editing and rewriting is required due to the formal requirements of literary writing. An increasing number of Korean novels and short stories are translated by such a dual team and published in France. We analyze the different steps of the process of translation, from understanding to reformulation in the light of the Interpretive Theory of Translation, trying to show why the key concept of “de-verbalization” makes co-translation justifiable, translation being defined as an operation from text to text not from language to language. The first part of our research is devoted to the theoretical aspects of our study (definition of some key notions, mainly of the Interpretive Theory of Translation) and its practical aspects (general survey of translated Korean literary works into French). In the second part, we analyze a large number of our translation samples with the objective of showing the sort of dialog the translator and her co-translator entertain, and underlining the nature of guidance proposed by the first one to second one and the contribution of the last one.Our conclusion is that, thanks to this dual-team process, often wrongly considered as a lesser evil, we are able to produce quality literary translation provided that the method implemented takes into account the conditions we describe here

The following work contains four chapters: the first one is centered around the weak mixing property for interval exchange transformations and translation flows. It is based on the results obtained together with Artur Avila which strengthen previous results due to Artur Avila and Giovanni Forni. The second chapter is dedicated to a joint work with Zhiyuan Zhang, in which we study the properties of stable ergodicity and accessibility for partially hyperbolic systems with center dimension at least two. We show that for dynamically coherent partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms and under certain assumptions of center bunching and strong pinching, the property of stable accessibility is dense in C^r topology, r>1, and even prevalent in the sense of Kolmogorov. In the third chapter, we explain the results obtained together with Julie Déserti on the properties of a one-parameter family of polynomial automorphisms of C^3; we show that new behaviours can be observed in comparison with the two-dimensional case. In particular, we study the escape speed of points to infinity and show that a transition exists for a certain value of the parameter. The last chapter is based on a joint work with Jiangong You, Zhiyan Zhao and Qi Zhou; we get asymptotic estimates on the size of spectral gaps for quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators in the analytic case. We obtain exponential upper bounds in the subcritical regime, which strengthens a previous result due to Sana Ben Hadj Amor. In the particular case of almost Mathieu operators, we also show exponential lower bounds, which provides quantitative estimates in connection with the so-called "Dry ten Martinis problem". As consequences of our results, we show applications to the homogeneity of the spectrum of such operators, and to Deift's conjecture

AbstractThis chapter primarily contributes to the research task V, i.e., evaluating the effectiveness of the semantification and translation system LACAST. In Section 5.1, we also extend LACAST semantic LATEX translations to support more mathematical operators, including sums, products, integrals, and limit notations. Hence, this chapter secondarily also contributes to research task IV, i.e., implementing an extension of the semantification approach to provide translations to CAS. We evaluate LACAST on two different datasets: the DLMF and Wikipedia.

Résumé :
AbstractPreviously, we focussed on evolutionary equations of the form $$\displaystyle \left (\overline {\partial _{t,\nu }M(\partial _{t,\nu })+A}\right )U=F. $$ ∂ t , ν M ( ∂ t , ν ) + A ¯ U = F . In this chapter, where we turn back to well-posedness issues, we replace the material law operator M(∂t,ν), which is invariant under translations in time, by an operator of the form $$\displaystyle \mathcal {M}+\partial _{t,\nu }^{-1}\mathcal {N}, $$ ℳ + ∂ t , ν − 1 N , where both $$\mathcal {M}$$ ℳ and $$\mathcal {N}$$ N are bounded linear operators in $$L_{2,\nu }(\mathbb {R};H)$$ L 2 , ν ( ℝ ; H ) . Thus, it is the aim in the following to provide criteria on $$\mathcal {M}$$ ℳ and $$\mathcal {N}$$ N under which the operator $$\displaystyle \partial _{t,\nu }\mathcal {M}+\mathcal {N}+A $$ ∂ t , ν ℳ + N + A is closable with continuous invertible closure in $$L_{2,\nu }(\mathbb {R};H)$$ L 2 , ν ( ℝ ; H ) . In passing, we shall also replace the skew-selfadjointness of A by a suitable real part condition. Under additional conditions on $$\mathcal {M}$$ ℳ and $$\mathcal {N}$$ N , we will also see that the solution operator is causal. Finally, we will put the autonomous version of Picard’s theorem into perspective of the non-autonomous variant developed here.

Résumé :
Focusing on the histories of interpretation in mission contexts across Australia and the Pacific, this chapter reveals that wherever they operated, missionaries depended on the cooperation of local intermediaries. Interpreters were vital. While this has long been noted in Pacific histories, scholars are only recently discovering similarities in Australia. Recent scholarship is also considering what Indigenous people themselves sought to achieve for their communities through interpreting, beyond resistance to or management of colonisers on their lands. The chapter concludes with three examples of Aboriginal interpreters who shaped the establishment of missions on their Country in various parts of North Australia in the twentieth century. It finds that interpreters upheld their cultural obligations to Country through their linguistic work.

Résumé :
This article discusses systematically the characterization of instantaneous point-line motions, and the higher-order relationship between a point-line motion and the associated rigid body motions. The transformation of a point-line between two positions is depicted as a pure translation along the point-line followed by a screw displacement about their common normal and expressed with a unit dual quaternion referred to as the point-line displacement operator. The derivatives of the point-line displacement operator characterize the point-line motion to various orders with a set of characteristic numbers. Such a treatment leads to a consistent expression or unified treatment for the transformation of lines, point-lines, and rigid bodies. The relationships between point-line motions and rigid body motions are addressed in detail up to the third order.

Résumé :
There are usually several motion patterns having the same DOF (degree of freedom). For example, planar motion, spherical motion, and spatial translation are motion patterns with 3-DOF. An f-DOF parallel mechanism with multiple operation modes is a parallel mechanism that can generate different motion patterns with f DOF. Up to now, no method has been proposed for the type synthesis of parallel mechanisms with multiple operation modes. This paper presents a general method for the type synthesis of parallel mechanisms with multiple operation modes. Using the proposed approach, 3-DOF parallel mechanisms with both spherical and translational modes, i.e., parallel mechanisms generating both the spherical motion pattern and the spatial translational motion pattern, are generated systematically. A large number of parallel mechanisms with both spherical and translational modes are obtained.

Résumé :
Qualitative and quantitative evaluations of volume tracking algorithms such as DA, FLAIR, MARS, CIP and VTEMC were conducted. Wide variety of two-dimensional test problems including (1) a circle transported in simple translation and rotational field, (2) a bubble rising in 45° slanted gravity field, (3) zigzag motion of a bubble in a vertical channel, and (4) a bubble rising in a stagnant liquid in axissymmetric cylindrical coordinate were chosen in the present study. As a result of these tests, the superiority of the cell-centered piecewise linear algorithm with the divergence treatment in operator split and especially with embedded micro cells was confirmed. Applicability of these algorithms to three-dimensional problems has to be examined in the future works.

Résumé :
The dimpling technique is widely used to measure subsurface damage SSD. The ground surface is first acid etched to open up the fractures. A dimple is polished into the surface by a sphere of a known diameter, and the diameters of the circular zones with and without visible subsurface fractures are measured to determined the damage depth. The measuring system consists of a microscope with a reticule and a linear translation stage. The diameters of the various zones are visually interpreted and measured. The dimpling technique provides a direct measurement of SSD, as opposed to other techniques where the SSD is implied from other properties such as scattering. The manual measurements associated with this technique are tedious and requires a trained operator to identify the deepest fracture.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The COP9 signalosome (CSN) is an eight-subunit protein complex that is highly conserved among eukaryotes. Genetic analysis of the signalosome in the plant model species Arabidopsis thaliana has shown that the signalosome is a repressor of light dependent seedling development as mutant Arabidopsis seedlings that lack this complex develop in complete darkness as if exposed to light. These mutant plants die following the seedling stage, even when exposed to light, indicating that the COP9 signalosome also has a central role in the regulation of normal photomorphogenic development. The biochemical mode of action of the signalosome and its position in eukaryotic cell signaling pathways is a matter of controversy and ongoing investigation, and recent results place the CSN at the juncture of kinase signaling pathways and ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation. We have shown that one of the many CSN functions may relate to the regulation of translation through the interaction of the CSN with its related complex, eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF3). While we have established a physical connection between eIF3 subunits and CSN subunits, the physiological and developmental significance of this interaction is still unknown. In an effort to understand the biochemical activity of the signalosome, and its role in regulating translation, we originally proposed to dissect the contribution of "h" subunit of eIF3 (eIF3h) along the following specific aims: (i) Isolation and phenotypic characterization of an Arabidopsis loss-of-function allele for eIF3h from insertional mutagenesis libraries; (ii) Creation of designed gain and loss of function alleles for eIF3h on the basis of its nucleocytoplasmic distribution and its yeast-two-hybrid interactions with other eIF3 and signalosome partner proteins; (iii) Determining the contribution of eIF3h and its interaction with the signalosome by expressing specific mutants of eIF3h in the eIF3h- loss-of function background. During the course of the research, these goals were modified to include examining the genetic interaction between csn and eif3h mutations. More importantly, we extended our effort toward the genetic analysis of mutations in the eIF3e subunit, which also interacts with the CSN. Through the course of this research program we have made several critical scientific discoveries, all concerned with the apparent diametrically opposed roles of eIF3h and eIF3e. We showed that: 1) While eIF3e is essential for growth and development, eIF3h is not essential for growth or basal translation; 2) While eIF3e has a negative role in translational regulation, eIF3h is positively required for efficient translation of transcripts with complex 5' UTR sequences; 3) Over-accumulation of eIF3e and loss-of-function of eIF3h both lead to cop phenotypes in dark-grown seedlings. These results were published in one publication (Kim et al., Plant Cell 2004) and in a second manuscript currently in revision for Embo J. Are results have led to a paradigm shift in translation research – eIF3 is now viewed in all systems as a dynamic entity that contains regulatory subuits that affect translational efficiency. In the long-term agronomic outlook, the proposed research has implications that may be far reaching. Many important plant processes, including developmental and physiological responses to light, abiotic stress, photosynthate, and hormones operate in part by modulating protein translation [23, 24, 40, 75]. Translational regulation is slowly coming of age as a mechanism for regulating foreign gene expression in plants, beginning with translational enhancers [84, 85] and more recently, coordinating the expression of multiple transgenes using internal ribosome entry sites. Our contribution to understanding the molecular mode of action of a protein complex as fundamental as eIF3 is likely to lead to advances that will be applicable in the foreseeable future.

Küsters, Ralf, et Ralf Molitor. Computing Most Specific Concepts in Description Logics with Existential Restrictions. Aachen University of Technology, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.108.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Computing the most specific concept (msc) is an inference task that can be used to support the 'bottom-up' construction of knowledge bases for KR systems based on description logics. For description logics that allow for number restrictions or existential restrictions, the msc need not exist, though. Previous work on this problem has concentrated on description logics that allow for universal value restrictions and number restrictions, but not for existential restrictions. The main new contribution of this paper is the treatment of description logics with existential restrictions. More precisely, we show that, for the description logic ALE (which allows for conjunction, universal value restrictions, existential restrictions, negation of atomic concepts) the msc of an ABox-individual only exists in case of acyclic ABoxes. For cyclic ABoxes, we show how to compute an approximation of the msc. Our approach for computing the (approximation of the) msc is based on representing concept descriptions by certain trees and ABoxes by certain graphs, and then characterizing instance relationships by homomorphisms from trees into graphs. The msc/approximation operation then mainly corresponds to unraveling the graphs into trees and translating them back into concept descriptions.
