Texte intégralWe explore the frequency translation of single-photon states of light and the creation of photon pairs by four-wave mixing in optical fiber. Frequency translation refers to changing the central frequency of a field, while photon pair creation refers to the creation of two individual photons at the same time. We demonstrate these effects in third-order nonlinear optical fiber. While both phenomena have previously been shown by three-wave mixing in second-order nonlinear media, there are compelling reasons to develop these tasks in third-order media. Most importantly, frequency translation in third-order material allows for the practical implementation of both small and large frequency shifts, while second-order material only practically allows for large shifts. Photon creation in third-order media often permits more flexible phase-matching conditions, allowing for the creation of a wider variety of quantum states than is often possible in second-order media. In our theoretical study of photon pair creation, we focus on the spectral correlations of the photon pairs. We pay particular attention to the creation of quantum states of high purity, where the photons are not spectrally correlated with one another. High purity photons are a requisite resource for several different quantum information processing applications, such as linear-optical quantum computing. We find that states with high purity can be realized with a minimal amount of spectral filtering. Experimentally, we study photon frequency translation in photonic crystal fiber. The central wavelength of the input photons was translated from 683 nm to 659 nm. We perform second-order intensity correlation measurements on both channels to demonstrate their quantum nature. This resulted in values of 0.21 ± 0.02 and 0.19 ± 0.05 for the 683-nm and 659-nm channels, respectively, demonstrating that those fields were dominated by their single-photon component. The efficiency at which the process occurred was 29 percent. Theoretically, we develop a Green function formalism to describe the translation process and develop a computational model to calculate the solution to the governing equations. Also, in a related experiment, we demonstrate classical frequency translation from 851 nm to 641 nm, a record translation in both wavelength and frequency, at an efficiency of 0.2 percent in a birefringent fiber.

Texte intégralThe art of creativity in literature is undeniable and certainly authors may express themselves in any number of ways in order to vehicle their thoughts or emotions. What about translation though? Indeed, the overall movement of creativity may be hidden or altered when translation is done by a third party. The focus of the present PhD thesis is on how self-translation supplies the creative ability of bilingual authors who translate their own novels. This work carries out an approach on translating problems revealed in Vassilis Alexakis' novel La langue maternelle (The mother tongue) which won the french literary award Prix Médicis in 1995. Our study achieves its purpose through meticulous analysis of field data, most precisely by exploring unpublished manuscripts, as well as greek and french versions published on a twelve-year framework. The present dissertation argues that Vassilis Alexakis' literary work is not a mere translation but a text (re)written from scratch after revising his own translation, thus his work is a constant creative and amazing process. Publications comparison reveals more than two thousand cases, classified into five specific categories so as to allow better analysis : morphosyntaxic, semantic, cultural, omissions and reproduction. Focus is also given to the level of personal implication, the relationship between identity and alterity and the diachronic dimension of hellenic elements via self-translation procedure. The research findings are various. Obviously, the literary work is not complete until he has revised and translated it, given that every translation implies a new version. We have noticed a felicitous use of language and author's tendency to transfer message more freely, as he knows intuitevely which rendering is more adequate and suitable. He often uses modulation strategy in order to translate source texts elements. Moreover, bilingual communication seems to be complementary and apparently his versions do not exist in isolation from one another. Indeed, even if they present apparent differences, their poetic function is too similar to be considered separate. It is also discussed if the use of alienating strategy enriches target culture and intralinguistic dialogue. The overall function of Aleaxakis' self-translation appears to play a double role ; on the one hand ensuring a dynamic and harmonius network between french and greek languages, whose reciprocal interferences warrant pure creativity and innovative literature and on the other hand, ensuring finding and inventing, and consequently learning and knowing acquisition, through the trip towards the other side

This research deals with the morphology, the meanings and the symbologies of 35 most frequent lexical creations in the British version of the Harry Potter series and of their linguistic correspondents belonging to the Brazilian version. In this sense, one of the aims of the research was to identify the most recurrent lexical creation processes among the words in both versions. Another aim was to verify whether the creative processes of the words that were not maintained in the target text influenced the morphological and lexical choices of the translator of the series in Brazil, in the creation of new lexical forms and in the use of words already existing in Portuguese in new contexts or with new meanings, in the target text. For both aims, the creative processes and the primary meanings of the words in question were described. Also, to facilitate the consultation of the analysed lexical creations and to contextualise them, a bilingual glossary was elaborated. Furthermore, among the obtained data, the words Dumbledore, Malfoy and Quirrell, which were maintained in translation, were selected, in order to carry out a comparative and detailed analysis about the symbolic relations involving these three words, in the source and target texts. In theoretical and methodological terms, translation was considered as an interpretative activity that produces meanings and never escapes the hierarchy of cultural values existing in the target language. Furthermore, the presuppositions from Corpus Linguistics and Corpus-Based Translation Studies, as well as those from lexical and morphological theories that are relevant to understand and to describe lexical creation phenomena, were employed. To extract the data, a parallel corpus containing the source and target texts of the series, the software WordSmith Tools (version 6.0), lexicographical works and the corpora British National Corpus (World Version) and Lácio-Ref were used. In respect of the results, composition by juxtaposition and the change from common name to proper name were found to be the most recurrent creative processes among the 35 most frequent lexical creations in the source text. Also among these creations, most (19) was found to have been maintained in the translated text. Concerning the 16 words in the target text that correspond to the other 16 lexical creations belonging to the source text, it was identified that the most frequent creative processes among them are the change from common name to proper name and other processes that were not found in the consulted bibliography. When comparing these 16 words with their correspondents in the source text, it was observed that this comparison does not permit to verify whether the translator’s morphological and lexical choices were influenced by the creative processes of these correspondents. The words showed that other factors can have influenced these choices, namely: meanings of the source word, the fact that the source word is or arouses the etymon of the target word, structure of the source word, a certain characteristic of the referent, system of the target language. Through the symbolic analyses of the words Dumbledore, Malfoy and Quirrell, it was verified that the translated text breaks symbolic nets, whilst maintaining relations and meanings, generating new meanings and new relations and conveying cultural features of the target language.

The actual research analyzes the translational relations from the movie Apocalypse Now (1979), from Francis Ford Coppola, with its sources, especially the novel The Heart of Darkness (2006), from Joseph Conrad and Dispatches (2005), from Michael Herr. The objective was to investigate how the cinematographic masterpiece was built from the intersemiotic translations of its sources. This research also analyzes the meanings developed by the masterpiece, pointing to convergent and dissonant points with its sources, verifying how the elements transposition (time, space, points of views, conflicts and characters) of literary and journalistic texts for the movie happen to be. The research justifies in the fact that the movie of Coppola does not translate in a sequence the novel narrative of Conrad and the other texts used for the movie industry, but to change concepts and ideas into moving images. Convencionally, this kind of criticism sees the adaptation tasks by certain kind of criteria like accuracy of the movie text in relation to the literary text. It needs to be understood how the translation process happens between sources and adaptation, respecting the specificities of each semiotic system, making the intersemiotic translation a method that can create a new masterpiece and not just a identity copy, from one to another. The movie Apocalypse Now creation process is also the object of this research and will be guided by the Genetics Criticism elements. Interpretations from authors who are considered references on the theme were considered, such as: Robert Stam, Julio Plaza, Sergei Eisenstein, Cecília Salles. In terms of method, scenes, parts and frames from Apocalypse Now were analyzed, starting by the surface thoughts, as Flusser teaches us, opposing to line thoughts, that can be found in literary texts. The movie production entry were also analyzed, like the documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991), with its coulisse, both realyzed by Eleanor Coppola, such as interviews with the diretor, screenwriter and the actors of the movie

The objective of this dissertation is to provide a critical examination of poetry translation, using as a framework the notion that translation of poetry is comparable to an act of murder or homicide. Constructs pertaining to detective fiction are used as a basis to expose critical theories and commentary on poetry translation, which validate the comparison, taking into account the integrity of the poetic text, the context in which it exists, and the identity (constructed or real) of the poet. Four published translations, by different authors, into English of Anna Akhmatova’s poem Posledniy tost (‘The Last Toast’) are analysed in detail to demonstrate the validity of the argument and to attempt to review and quantify the loss of a poem’s essential and vital qualities as a result of translation.

Texte intégralThis work begins with the analysis of the invented languages in the European society starting from the second half of the XIXth century. Those auxiliary languages, as opposed to those named natural, have some characteristics which sometimes can assimilate or, in other cases, can differentiate those languages. Moreover, the analysis highlights how they were publicised at the time of their creation or in some cases as well as in these days, in order to motivate the learners, from different countries, to study those new languages. The analysis is then focused on the linguistic creation in the fiction of the literature with a large plurilinguistic corpus. Depending on the texts, some of the new languages take inspiration from real languages while some others differentiate from the real world languages, taking the reader into another universe. The last part of the analysis presents some cases of translations of the invented languages in literature, and for few of them the comparison of more than one version. Some authors concentrate the new language in specific parts of the text or for a special vocabulary whilst others assign this language to a character throughout all the text. The thesis ends with the presentation of three authors who play with the possibilities of their written language and shows what the results of the translations of those texts are

Focusing on memory and exile within Dany Laferièrres novel Pays sans chapeau (1997) and Vladimir Nabokovs autobiography Speak, memory (1947), the aim of this study is to observe the relation of each of these authors with his respective old and new worlds, borders, languages and the narration of them, contributing to the discussion within Comparative Literature and to the new trends in the Canadian studies. Through the concepts of carnivalization and of the act of reading, we follow the rupture of hierarchies in the narratives, to see how memory reinvents reality in new, simple effects. Despite being raised under a democracy and easier conditions than their seniors, the so-called “young generation” of writers displays a constant gloominess and uneasiness in their works. Through the examples of five short stories, loneliness and silence are analyzed under an interdisciplinary approach, making use of both literary and translation studies. While producing a fully commented translation, this thesis shows how the fact of being alone can be felt by young people in today’s Korean society, opposing a negative loneliness coming from the isolation from the group one wishes to be part of, and a positive solitude viewed as a oasis of calm in the middle of a roaring daily life often made stressful by the Confucian-hierarchy-inspired norms. We analyze how being alone can be seen both in a positive and negative way, and also as a voluntary or involuntary fact. Furthermore, the characters displayed in the short stories suffer from difficulties of speech and communication. Real and direct communication is hardly made possible, would it be a matter of “wrongly-said” from the first speaker, or “wrongly-understood” from the interlocutor. When this speech uneasiness turns into silence, the involuntary incapacity to speak from fear is added to the voluntary choice to hide from the risks of a distorted oral production. Thus, while expressing the suffering of one’s life, silent expression such as writing and literature appears to be the easiest choice

Texte intégralLisa Bresner (1971-2007) was a multi-talented and prolific artist : novelist, translator, sinologist, children’s book author, short film director, and lecturer on Chinese civilization. Though her life was brief, she left behind a rich body of over thirty works – including novels, essays, translations, poetry, and children's books – that served as a cultural bridge between France and the Far East. This research explores three main aspects of how Lisa Bresner integrated Chinese and Japanese cultures into her literary creations. First, we examine her children’s literature, focusing on how she combined her imagination and love for Chinese ideograms to craft a poetic, transcultural universe that is both accessible and educational for young readers. Next, we explore her translations and works as a sinologist, highlighting how she made classical Chinese texts accessible to French readers while infusing them with her own creative touch. Finally, we delve into her novels, where she addresses themes of identity and otherness through characters that reflect her personal journey of self-discovery, shaped by encounters with different cultures. Our study seeks to answer a key question : How did Lisa Bresner, through her transcultural works, blend her personal experiences with Asian culture to explore the boundaries between self and other ? By drawing on her published works from 1992 to 2008, as well as her manuscripts and letters archived at IMEC, we aim to shed light on the unique way in which she contributed to bridging Eastern and Western cultures

Texte intégralThough mediation and cultural mediation seem to be enrooted in Translation Studies especially since the Cultural Turn, a specialized definition of these notions is still missing. Based on their definitions in other different domains – especially cultural communication – and on a causal theory of translation, we present a three-fold thesis on the translator as a cultural mediator and on his deliberate interventions. The three axes we develop here are based on identity, textual and functionalist approaches. First, we analyze the specificity of the identity of the translator seen as a construction that is not only marked by the linguistic formation and the sociocultural norms of his original community, but also by the actor’s empathy towards the Other and his system of norms. In this first fold, translation strategies are studied as mirrors of identity strategies the translator follows in order to keep the coherence and the valorization of his identity construction. Then, the texts and types of texts are considered as cultural creations that the translator re-presents to his community through making cultural differences understandable on the formal, lexical and discourse levels. To do so, he uses different writing norms from the most conforming to the most differentiating one. In this second fold, the translator’s preface is seen as a privileged place for a direct mediation, in which he already informs his reader about the translation he’s about to read and recommends the reading. Finally, we study two translation functions through which the translator acts on the cultural identity of his community based on his re-presentation of the text: the intellectual formation of the reader and the de-construction/ re-construction of his identity. By the means of a simple text or of an educational institution, the translator’s first aim is to inform the reader, and through this information, he acts on the re-definition of essential foundations of his identity construction

Texte intégralCreativity and subversion in Joan Sales’ rewritings focuses on the editor and novelist Joan Sales (1912-1983) and seeks to relocate the author of Uncertain Glory in the Catalan literary scene from a diversification of points of view from which it becomes possible to make an study. Translation theories of the late twentieth century have been used as a basis, written by authors such as André Lefevere and Susan Bassnett, who consider translation, edition, adaptation, critics and historiography inside the field of creative rewriting and give a subversive power to all these activities. So, the goal has been try to change the trend that historically had considered negatively Sales’ rewritings. Under the umbrella of the theory of rewriting, manipulations, changes and interventions become a tool which contributes to the development of literary culture.

Three different poets are aproched in this research, are they: Sextus Propertius, Ezra Pound and Mário Faustino, poets from different times and languages. Pound creativily translated Propertius and Mário Faustino partialy translated Pound, thence the possibility of connecting them; Pound’s translation, central in this work, consists in a colection of twelve poems (and an extra) entitled Homage to Sextus Propertius, from which only five were translated by Faustino. Pound changed the way of how to read latin literature in english language, proposing a translation that seeked to pay tribute and to renew Propertius at the same time. His critic and translating approach echoed in Brazil through poets like Faustino and the Campos brothers; besides taking into account the paideuma, the most outstanding guideline Faustino learned from Pound is that of the poet responsability and his function in society. Starting from a presentantion of Propertius’ poetry, we proceed to comparatively analyse the translations made by Pound and Faustino, in order to infer the differences, gains and losts of both, considering the project of translation and the age of each. Lastly we present a complete translation suggestion of Homage to Sextus Propertius in portuguese, seeking to apply in practice the teorical discussion about translation that was developed through this work.
