Résumé :
The chapter “Healthy Transitions to Family Formation” focuses on two features of family formation: preparing to build long-term partnerships and preparing to become parents. The chapter pays special attention to dating and sexuality, cohabitation, growing up in a stepfamily, and transitioning to parenthood. The discussion of becoming parents includes pre-birth preparations for parenthood, sharing childrearing responsibilities, and implications of parenthood for mental and physical health. Aside from exploring the diversity of growing up in a stepfamily, the chapter also highlights differences by gender, race, and ethnicity (when available in the literature) that may better help scholars understand how a variety of emerging adults form families and flourish in the process. Directions for future research are included throughout the chapter.

Résumé :
This chapter continues to complicate the optimistic embrace of creative livelihoods and practices as a mode of transitioning away from criminality by attending to Budhan Theater’s gender politics and performance. Competing constructions of good work and good women rest on complex intersections and negotiations of histories of stigma based on criminality alongside histories of stigma attached to women performing onstage. The chapter argues that performance enables uneven class mobility and intense affective experiences of cross-dressing men. Ultimately although Budhan Theater leaders optimistically promote artistic practice and creative livelihoods their plays are also a tribute to the economic value, embodied strength, and moral meaning of illegal livelihoods of Chhara women offstage. Ultimately, this shows that Budhan Theater’s embrace of creative economy is hardly absolute.

Seymour, Nicole. Trans Ecology and the Transgender Road Narrative. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199935338.013.152.

Résumé :
This article identifies a particular subgenre of the road narrative, the transgender road narrative, analyzing the filmTransamericaand the novelNevadaas representative examples. The first part draws on transgender studies scholarship, showing how these texts both depict a long history of trans (im)mobility and engage with the affective geographies of gender transitioning, including the idea of the body as home. The second part draws on ecocriticism and environmental humanities scholarship, comparing howTransamericaandNevadadepict landscapes and environments in relation to trans bodies. This article thus takes this subgenre as an opportunity to explore the intersection of transgender issues and environmental issues and subsequently to develop a new line of inquiry that we might call “trans ecology.” (This article has been commissioned as a supplement toThe Oxford Handbook of Ecocriticism, edited by Greg Garrard.)

Résumé :
This chapter offers a definitive example of ecological thinking in contemporary queer fictions. It reads American author Leslie Feinberg's Stone Butch Blues (1992) alongside two narratives set in the Caribbean: Jamaican American Michelle Cliff's No Telephone to Heaven (1987) and Trinidadian Canadian Shani Mootoo's Cereus Blooms at Night (1998). These novels depict what an “organic transgenderism:” a spontaneous, noncommodified, and self-directed process likened to the life-cycle changes of plants and animals. The chapter claims that they thereby challenge the common view of gender transitioning as an “unnatural” medical intervention. Moreover, through their depictions of organic transgenderism, these novels stage, and thus help facilitate, a shift in the 1990s from the older sexological model of “transsexuality” to the current community-derived umbrella term of “transgenderism.” Finally, this chapter demonstrates how a queer ecocritical lens can help us trace the transnational circulation of queer ecological thinking.

Résumé :
Although transgender individuals have always existed, their fight for acceptance and equal rights is just beginning. Within this larger context, one area of emerging concern is their health—physical, psychological, and social. From legislation determining public restroom access to insurance coverage of hormone therapy for transitioning individuals to harassment and discrimination, transgender people face a number of challenges that can negatively affect their well-being. A part of Greenwood's Health and Medical Issues Today series, Part I of this book explores definitions of sex and gender, the history of transgender awareness and activism, physical and psychological health concerns specific to transgender individuals, and how identifying as transgender can have different effects on individuals' health at different stages in their life. Part II examines issues and controversies related to the health and well-being of transgender individuals. Part III provides a variety of useful materials, including case studies, a timeline of critical events, a glossary, and a directory of resources.
