Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the quality of the frying oil used in restaurants, fast food establishments, and confectionary stores. The compliance of used frying oils with the quality standards as determined by the peroxide value (PV) and the total polar materials (TPMs) is investigated by analyzing 375 samples of oil. Design/methodology/approach The PV was measured according to the national standard procedure number 4179, while the TPM was determined using a Testo 270 cooking oil tester. Frying oils with a PV>5 mEq/kg and a TPM>25 percent were considered to be non-edible. For a comparison of groups, the Mann-Whitney and Spearman correlation tests were used, and p<0.05 was considered significant. Findings The maximum TPM and PV recorded for frying oils in fast food restaurants were 97.5 percent and 77.9 mEq/kg, respectively. The results also revealed that 60 percent of samples were non-edible according to the TPM, while 58.9 percent of the oil samples were non-edible because of the PV. TPM and PV correlated well with each other (r=0.99, p<0.001) and with oil replacement intervals (r=0.90, p<0.001). The relationship between the TPM and PV was stronger in the polynomial model than the linear model. The following equation was obtained: peroxide (mEq/kg oil)=0.0043 TPM2 (%)+0.1587 TPM (%)–0.6152. Originality/value Considering the current limitations in official supervision by health authority, on-site self-monitoring of the TPM using the Testo 270 cooking oil tester by sellers as a solution seems a new approach. Food stores, restaurants, and confectionary stores should be equipped with TPM analyzers to determine the quality of the frying oil and the timely replacement of non-edible oils.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a new operational approach to equipment maintenance designed to exploit the complementary nature of total productive maintenance (TPM) and reliability-centered maintenance (RCM). Design/methodology/approach This paper focuses on the operational aspect of the maintenance practice, proposing an equipment maintenance methodology that can be suitably adopted to define a new maintenance plan or check and improve an existing one. It integrates principles and methods of TPM and RCM and uses different tools to support decision-makers and operators. It proposes several worksheets which facilitate planning and implementing maintenance activities, that range from autonomous maintenance tasks to maintainability improvement actions. Findings This paper exploits the complementary nature of TPM and RCM to design or improve maintenance plans for a generic system. The tools and worksheets presented can be helpful to practitioners and operators. Originality/value While the integration of TPM and RCM is evidently a central issue in the maintenance management context, it has received limited attention in literature. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it lacks a structured practical equipment maintenance methodology that exploits the complementary nature of TPM and RCM. Therefore, the approach presented in this paper would fill the current gap.

Résumé :
Despite various reported analytical methods for topiramate (TPM) analysis, greener analytical approaches are scarce in literature. As a consequence, the objective of the current research is to design a normal-phase stability-indicating high-performance thin-layer chromatography (SI-HPTLC) methodology for TPM analysis in marketed tablet dosage forms that is rapid, sensitive, and greener. TPM was derivatized densitometrically and analyzed at 423 nm in visible mode with anisaldehyde-sulfuric acid as the derivatizing agent. The greener SI-HPTLC technique was linear in the 30–1200 ng band−1 range. In addition, the suggested SI-HPTLC methodology for TPM analysis was simple, rapid, cheaper, precise, robust, sensitive, and environmentally friendly. The greener SI-HPTLC method was able to detect TPM along with its degradation products under acid, base, and oxidative degradation conditions. However, no TPM degradation was recorded under thermal and photolytic stress conditions. TPM contents in commercial tablet dosage forms were recorded as 99.14%. Using 12 different principles of green analytical chemistry, the overall analytical GREEnness (AGREE) score for the greener SI-HPTLC method was calculated to be 0.76, confirming the proposed normal-phase SI-HPTLC method’s good greener nature. Overall, these results demonstrated that the suggested SI-HPTLC technique for TPM measurement in pharmaceutical products was reliable and selective.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the key enabler for total productive maintenance (TPM) implementation in Indian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by using graph theoretic approach (GTA). There are certain enablers for TPM implementation which helps the organization to implement it successfully. It is very essential to identify the nature and impact of these key enablers. Design/methodology/approach A large number of the enablers (27) have identified for TPM implementation in Indian SMEs from the available literature, questionnaire survey and expert opinion. These TPM enablers have categorized into six major categories. Findings In this research work, the intensity of identifying enablers has been calculated to show their impact or influence in TPM implementation. The value of intensity of TPM enablers shows the role or impact of individual enabler in the implementation of TPM in Indian SMEs. Practical implications This study provides an easy-to-use methodology for the practical decision makers in the manufacturing industry to improve their performance by implementing TPM in Indian SMEs. A detailed methodology has prepared to identify the enablers for TPM implementation in Indian SMEs by using GTA. This study also explains that how to check the feasibility of an organization to implement TPM in Indian SMEs successfully. Originality/value TPM is an improvement concept which holds the potential to improve manufacturing organizations, but its implementation is not easy in Indian SMEs. The reason behind the unsuccessful implementation of TPM in most of the organizations is the ignorance of impact of innumerable enablers and barriers.

Résumé :
In recent years, the giant squid processing industry in Peru exhibited a 59% increase in exports with respect to 2018. According to estimates, this industry generates approximately 30,900 jobs per year. However, some SMEs experience low productivity, such as the PECEPE company, due to plant downtime. This represents 26% of the available time, which translates into the loss of 1760 tons every year. The most constraining external factor the sector faces is uncertainty in resource availability caused by changing weather conditions and informal fishing activities. Although there is a large number of research studies on the fishing industry and resource extraction, literature on processing plant operations is scarce. Within this context, this study seeks to promote a high impact sector in Peru, as well as fostering processing plant competitiveness and productivity. Hence, to address these issues, the authors propose a maintenance management model under the TPM approach. As part of the results from model implementation, a 39% decrease was reported in plant downtime, while maintenance costs also decreased by 16%, which, in turn, increased machine availability and production by 784 tons per year.

de, Jongh Leigh-Anne. « The molecular precursor approach to control the morphology of Co₃O₄ on support materials ». Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2539.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In this project, the TMP method was employed to produce “active sites.” These active sites are for influencing and controlling the Co₃O₄ growth. One of the aims was to investigate what effect the grafting of the molecular precursor has on the nature and distribution of active sites on the various support materials. The second aim was to investigate the effect an increase in molecular precursor loading, in various impregnation steps, has on the nature and distribution of the active sites. The third aim was to investigate the effect of the steric constraints of ligand groups, by changing the molecular precursor, on the nature and distribution of active sites. The fourth aim was to use the different aspects discussed above and apply them to investigate what effect the above-mentioned modifications have on Co₃O₄ morphology. While another aim was to investigated what effect varying the quantity of Co(NO₃)₂•6H₂O has on Co₃O₄ morphology. Lastly, we investigated what effect varying the impregnation procedure and calcination temperature have on the Co₃O₄ morphology. The effect the support has on the phase of titanium molecular precursor was investigated using molecular precursor, ⁱPrOTi[OSi(O[superscript(t)]Bu₃)]₃. The supports used were Silica 922, NanoDur, Aerosil 200, Stöber spherical silica, SBA-15, mod MCM-41 and sMCM-41. The molecular precursor ⁱPrOTi[OSi(O[superscript(t)]Bu₃)]₃ was revealed to be in the orthorhombic TiO₂ with space group P(cab), normal brookite lattice, on Silica 922 after calcination but only an isolated area displaying this morphology. Generally we do not observe any TiO₂ on the support, which indicates that we have produce site-isolated sites, suggesting the TMP method has been successful on all of the various supports. The emphasis is placed on the effect of this molecular precursor and the respective support has on the Co₃O₄ morphology in Chapter 3. In this Chapter, a unique morphology was observed on Silica 922 which showed Co₃O₄ nanorods of cubic Co₃O₄ in the space group Fd-3m. Silica 922 was used for the remainder of the thesis to investigate the effect the quantity of molecular precursor has on the nature of active sites and Co₃O₄ morphology in Chapter 4. This support was also used to investigate the effect the amount of Co(NO₃)₂•6H₂O has on Co₃O₄ morphology in Chapter 5. This support was lastly used to investigate the steric constraints of the ligand groups, Ti[OSi(O[superscript(t)]Bu)₃]₄ (TiSi4), ⁱPrOTi[OSi(O[superscript(t)]Bu)₃]₃ (TiSi3), (OtBu)₃TiOSi(O[superscript(t)]Bu)₃ (TiSi) and the least sterically constrained Ti(OⁱPr)₄ has on the loading of precursor and Co₃O₄ morphology in Chapter 6.

To maintain durably an activity during twenty-three years doesn't act as itself but it takes to know how to model together : though and action, control and learning, stability and change. The elaboration of a strategy, by a SME, follows a process of its own that is adapted to its technological and organizationel capacities but it must also be connected to the opportunities seized by the manager.Based one's argument on the case study of a small cooperative cellar, we illustrate the elaboration process of a strategy. We retain the story line of the manager who served as chairman of the board of directors of the cooperative and also as managing director of this small firm. We shall see that this functional originality allowed the organization to combine innovation and sustainability on all fields of activity. This helped it to continue the development of its wine industry, in spite of the functional problems or the evolutions of his Market. To study "the innovation being made" has brought to the foreground one after the other the events-keys, which shaped the corporate policy led from 1988 to 2011, and allowed to highlight the role of the actors at the heart of the process of strategic Learning

Akofio, Sowah Margaret Avis Naa Anyeley. « A conceptual framework and approach for enhancing transportation asset management (TAM) implementation for sustained TAM programs ». Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/53936.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In 2012, federal legislation introduced a requirement for formal transportation asset management (TAM) in transportation agencies. The law specifically requires agencies to develop TAM plans and implement TAM programs in their decision-making processes. The history of national policy development for (TAM) and research in policy implementation and organizational theory have shown that program sustainment is not easily achieved. Often, agencies can respond to this kind of legislative mandate with ineffective efforts to achieve legitimacy that reduce the likelihood for the program to be sustained in the long-term. This presents a challenge because without sustainment, the benefits of TAM, which are mostly long-term, may not be fully realized. The objective of this work was to develop a conceptual framework to guide transportation agencies to review their TAM implementation practices and identify opportunities to enhance long-term program sustainment. The conceptual basis for the framework comes from a synthesis of transportation, policy and program implementation, and change management literature, supported by insight from a panel of practitioner and academic experts. The TAM Implementation Review Framework (TIRF) incorporates seven themes of implementation factors that can promote sustainment of TAM practices impacting the social, organizational, and programmatic elements of implementation. The TIRF was applied in case studies to review the TAM implementation processes of three Departments of Transportation (DOTs) resulting in different kinds of information on how implementation activities address factors related to program sustainment. These results can steer future implementation activities in DOTs towards increased probabilities of achieving long-term program sustainment. The primary contributions of this work lie in the development of the conceptual framework and approach to enhance TAM implementation by emphasizing the people and organizational elements of TAM, alongside with the technical. In practice, the TIRF offers agencies a review and planning tool to support TAM implementation decision making and to promote program sustainment. The output is being proposed as a foundational element in the development of an evidence-based catalog of TAM implementation strategies. This can facilitate inter-agency knowledge sharing by providing a platform for systematic documentation of implementation experiences to support broader adoption of strategies that can contribute to increased program sustainment.

Résumé :
One of the most pressing needs society has in 2012 is addressing the plight of the 4 billion people, globally, who live at the bottom of the economic pyramid. Unless initiatives are undertaken to alleviate poverty and hardship in this portion of society, human potential will be wasted and the economic burden on the rest of society to support them will remain significant. In South Africa a significant portion of the population live at the bottom of the pyramid. One initiative to alleviate poverty and hardship is to enable bottom of the pyramid people who are excluded from formal financial services to access to them. By accessing formal financial services they would be able to safely save and borrow money. They would also be able to escape exploitative informal financial practices. Technology has the potential to expand access to financial services and reduce the cost of service provision. To date, however, it has not delivered on its promise of expanding financial inclusion at the bottom of the pyramid. Intermediaries, too, have been used to increase access to financial services but have also not successfully expanded financial inclusion at the bottom of the pyramid. Understanding which factors would allow these approaches to realize their potential has the ability to meaningfully contribute to addressing the plight of people at the bottom of the pyramid. This study brings together the potential of technology and the role of intermediaries to model expanding financial inclusion at the bottom of the pyramid in South Africa. The Technology Acceptance Model is used as a basis to propose an extended TAM model that explains adoption of technology enabled financial services through an intermediary at the bottom of the pyramid in South Africa. The proposed model is validated using structural equation modelling with data collected in a national survey in South Africa. The extended TAM model successfully explains more than 90% of the behavioural intention of financially excluded people at the bottom of the pyramid to adopt financial services through an intermediary. Using the findings, a strategic approach to expanding financial inclusion at the bottom of the pyramid is proposed.

Résumé :
Background: The problem of increasing amounts of food packaging waste especially in Germany leads to the challenge of how to minor waste by using no packaging in order to listen to environmental-conscious generation y consumers. This is why retailers need to understand the factors impacting the purchase intention and thus, need to act in higher extend in terms of a preventive sustainable approach. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to examine the purchase intention of German generation y consumers towards packaging-free products. An extended Theory of Planned Behavior forms the theoretical foundation to investigate which factors are influencing the purchase intention the most. In addition to the original TPB factors attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control, the research model was extended by two new factors, namely environmental concern and barriers. Method: Through an explanatory research method, the data was collected in a quantitative online survey based on a sample of 422 respondents. In order to investigate the relationships among the factors and to further support or reject the study’s hypothesis, the data was analyzedby using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and simple and multiple regression. Finally, to determine differences among groups additional tests have been conducted. Conclusion: The findings of this study revealed new insights about predictors of the purchaseintention: German consumers’ intention is mainly impacted by their attitude, followed by thefactor barriers, and perceived behavioral control, whereas subjective norms do not. Further, the other newly added factor environmental concern indirectly impacts the purchase intention through attitude. Moreover, the importance of including new added factors to the original TPB model is shown as the extended TPB model has improved its power in explaining German generation y’s purchase intention towards packaging free. By that, the respondents of this studyare highly environmental concerned and overall intent to purchase packaging-free products in mainstream grocery stores, oats and milk respectively. This study’s results provide valuable insights for marketers of German mainstream grocery stores who are interested in selectively integrating packaging-free shopping to their stores.

Résumé :
Nanostructured thermoelectric materials being an emerging area of research bismuth (Bi) nanostructures have been developed by solvothermal approach with a change of solvent. Structural characterization revealed that nanorods and nanospheres like structures were generated in the process when the solvent used were only ethylene glycol (EG) and ethylene glycol with absolute ethanol (AE) in the ratio of 1:1 respectively. Electrical properties viz. conductivity (σ) and thermoelectric power(S) have been measured in the temperature range 300K to 400K. From the observed value of σ and S power factor P has been calculated. The property improved for nanosphere like structures.
In this Thesis we use causal perturbation theory to study scalar quantum electrodynamics with Du n-Kemmer-Petiau elds. We determine the differential cross sections at the tree level, the vacuum polarization tensor, self energy function and the normalizability of the theory. After that, we compare our results with those ones obtained via Klein-Gordon-Fock elds determining that they are not completely equivalenttf

Résumé :
In a world striving for continuous improvement, the utility and manufacturing industries appear to have taken different paths to success. But are they the same and can we learn from them to take a revolutionary step towards manufacturing excellence for Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel? The safety critical environment that is the hallmark of the nuclear industry has led the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) to develop a rigorous and disciplined approach to equipment reliability that is repeated across the nuclear generation industry. This is manifested in well documented processes and procedures in response to the heavily audited power generation segment. INPO’s Equipment Reliability guideline, AP-913, is a top down methodology that captures equipment history and best practices to tie together activities throughout a station to improve reliability. Manufacturing however is breeding a culture of continuous improvement, or “kaizens”, where “Lean” and “Total Productive Maintenance” (TPM) tools and techniques drive a multiplicity of incremental improvements. The manufacturing concepts and approaches of Lean and TPM were developed originally in Japan by such companies as Toyota and Motorola and formalized by the Japan Institute of Plant Management as an equipment management strategy, which was designed to support the Total Quality Management strategy. Lean and TPM are fostered by professional societies and are well described in a body of literature with decades of experience. Since this paper provides a cross-discipline comparison in a primarily nuclear applications conference, introductory material for the TPM methodology is referenced, while only overview concepts are described herein. It is hoped that this will spur the reader to develop a more complete understanding of TPM, to further integrate these applications in both industries. This paper provides an initial overview of how Westinghouse Fuel Manufacturing is developing an equipment reliability programme that is exploiting the best practices of the AP-913 integrated processes with the strong continuous improvement tool set of manufacturing. We have just begun to roll-out the new processes and guidelines. In future papers, more detailed comparisons and lessons learned from implementation will be described.

Résumé :
Abstract Integrated Work System (IWS) and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) are two popular approaches used by production firms to identify and eliminate production losses. In a highly competitive business environment, companies must increase their efficiency in the manufacturing process to support resilient business continuity. While OEE is widely used as a quantitative tool for measuring the performance of total productive maintenance (TPM), the IWS approach integrates equipment, processes, and involvement of people into a unified approach to reduce costs, improve quality, and increase productivity. Principally, there is an alignment between the two concepts. The IWS has the potential to maximize OEE to eliminate equipment failure and defects, minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity with less time, effort, and waste. The purpose of this work is to compare the performance of the OEE with the implementation of the IWS pillar, i.e., autonomous maintenance (AM). The rollout of the AM pillar was carried out on the two identical packaging machines (HLP1) with a speed of 120 packets per minute. The data which is shown in this paper is for both machines during the operational hours. Finally, the analysis showed positive results for both machines within a five-month period, with an increase of 27% and 15% in OEE, respectively. Later in the discussion, the root cause and SWOT analysis were perused for OEE and TPM, respectively, in this paper.

Résumé :
Abstract An optimal simultaneous kinematic, dynamic and control design approach is proposed for high performance computer controlled machines such as robot manipulators. The approach is based on the Trajectory Pattern Method (TPM) and a fundamentally new design philosophy that such machines in general and ultra-high performance machines in particular must only be designed to perform a class or classes of motions effectively. In the proposed approach, given the structure of the manipulator, its kinematic, dynamic and control parameters are optimized simultaneously with the parameters that describe the selected trajectory pattern. In the example presented in this paper, a weighted sum of the norms of the higher harmonics appearing in the actuating torques and the integral of the position and velocity tracking errors are used to form the optimality criterion. The selected optimality criterion should yield a system that is optimally designed to accurately follow the specified trajectory at high speed. Other objective functions can be readily formulated to synthesize systems for optimal performance. The potentials of the developed method and its implementation for generally defined motion patterns are discussed.

Résumé :
Abstract This paper presents deterioration models for maintenance planning of offshore jacket platform based on two methods: i) stochastic Markov-chain based model and ii) stochastic-mechanistic deterioration models based on steel corrosion rates. Markov-chain models require the estimation of transition probability matrix (TPM), which is typically derived from the inspection data. The global structural health condition of the jacket is computed based on the condition of individual elements and their criticality in terms of failure consequence. The criticality factors are established based on nonlinear static redundancy analyses. This method can model deterioration when routine inspection records of jacket members are available. When there is scarcity of inspection records, stochastic-mechanistic deterioration modeling approach can be used. Monte-Carlo simulations with established corrosion wastage models are utilized to estimate the time-dependent deterioration of jacket legs, horizontal and diagonal bracings in splash and immersion zones. This method is proposed when there is scarcity of inspection records. The deterioration models are further utilized to predict the timing for Maintenance, Repair and Rehabilitation (MRR) actions, and estimate the residual service life of the jacket platform. This study demonstrates the application of the proposed deterioration modeling approaches with a case study of a typical 4-legged offshore jacket platform.

Résumé :
Abstract An integrated structure and motion pattern specific design approach is proposed for optimal design of high speed and accuracy computer controlled machines including robots. The approach is based on the Trajectory Pattern Method (TPM). The current approach to the design of such machines is to assume that the machine will be required to perform more or less any arbitrary and often unrealistic tasks. This assumption nearly always leads to designs based on the worst operating conditions. The proposed trajectory pattern based design methodology presented in this paper stems from a fundamentally new design philosophy. The philosophy behind the proposed approach is that machines in general and ultra-high performance machines in particular must only be designed to perform a class or classes of motions effectively. And that trajectory patterns, i.e., classes of parametric trajectories, exist with which high speed motions can be synthesized with minimal ensuing vibration and control problems. In the proposed approach, given the kinematic structure of the machine, its kinematic and dynamic parameters are optimized simultaneously with the parameters that describe a selected trajectory pattern. The controller parameters may also be included as design variables. In the present study, the optimality criterion employed is based on minimizing the higher harmonic portion of the actuating forces (torques) required for performing the selected class(es) of motion patterns. Trajectories that do not demand high frequency actuating torque harmonics are desirable since they reduce vibration and control problems in high performance systems and reduce settling time. Examples of the application of the proposed approach are presented.

Résumé :
Our overall goal is to improve insecticidal nematodes by genetically engineering strains capable of entering an enhanced state of dormancy that provides improved stability. Objectives: 1. Clone and sequence tps-l homologue from Steinernema carpocapsae. (Revised: A failure to isolate the tps gene group from Steinernema precipitated a redirection to identifying other genes involved in insecticidal nematode desiccation process.) 2. Incorporate cloned tps-l gene into S. carpocapsae to obtain overexpression, thereby, enhancing desiccation tolerance. (Revised: Other stress genes in addition to tps-l genes were cloned and efforts at expression in S. carpocapsae were conducted) 3. Characterize the transgenic strains. No other biological control agent offers more impressive attributes than insecticidal nematodes. However, their potential is limited by the bane of nearly all biological control agents: poor stability. This leads to inadequate shelf-life and ultimately reduced field efficacy. Nematode storage is based on desiccation, yet insecticidal species are only capable of partial desiccation termed quiescent anhydrobiosis. Overwhelming evidence has shown that when the disaccharide compound trehalose is elevated in anhydrobiotic organisms such as yeast, plants, and nematodes it enables these organisms the ability to survive environmental stresses i.e., desiccation. Armed with this information our goal was to improve insecticidal nematodes stability by engineering trehalose overexpression.

Résumé :
Ecological models provide crucial tools for informing many aspects of ecosystem restoration and management, ranging from increasing understanding of complex ecological functions to prioritizing restoration sites and quantifying benefits for project reporting. The diversity of ecosystem types and restoration objectives often precludes the use of existing models; as such, model development is commonly required to inform restoration decision-making. Index-based habitat models are a common approach for assessing ecosystem condition. These models relate habitat quality to species’ distributions. Habitat suitability (quality) typically ranges on a scale from 0 to 1. Habitat models have been developed to assess habitat suitability for specific taxa, communities, or ecosystem functions. Restoration-project timelines often require that these models be developed rapidly and in conjunction with many external stakeholders or partners. Here, the Toolkit for interActive Modeling (TAM) is proposed as a platform for rapidly developing index-based models, particularly for US Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) ecosystem-restoration or mitigation planning processes. The TAM is a consistent quantitative framework that allows for development of a generic platform for index-based model development.

Résumé :
This multi-phased PHMSA/PRCI project aims to conduct a collaborative study (pipeline operators, ILI Technology Providers (TPs), subject matter experts, and consultants) to quantitatively measure and improve the detection and sizing capabilities of current corrosion ILI systems. A data-driven approach was used which identified problematic corrosion profiles based on the review of recent Root-Cause-Analysis reports of corrosion-related failures to design and construct an ILI corrosion test string containing features having similar profiles. All such profiles were then documented using the best possible NDE techniques. Three participating ILI TPs proposed appropriate inspection tools based on limited knowledge of the integrity conditions in the test string. A series of blind pull-through tests of the ILI systems were carried out, where the TPs delivered standard ILI reports for performance evaluation. The ILI TPs receive detailed feedback identifying the detection and sizing gaps. They are given a limited sample of detailed anomaly profile data to identify potential sources of detection and sizing improvement. A second series of ILI tests are performed and the changes in detection and sizing are analyzed and quantified for each problematic corrosion profile, identifying the improvements and the remaining gaps. The results and findings of this 3.5-year long project are presented in this Report. This research was funded in part under the Department of Transportation, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration's Pipeline Safety Research and Development Program. The views and conclusions contained in this document are those of the authors and should not be interpreted as representing the official policies, either expressed or implied, of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, or the U.S. Government.

Résumé :
This CDI Practice Paper by Tom Aston and Marina Apgar makes the case for ‘bricolage’ in complexity-aware and qualitative evaluation methods. It provides a framework based on a review of 33 methods to support evaluators to be more intentional about bricolage and to combine the component parts of relevant methods more effectively. It discusses two cases from practice to illustrate the value added of taking a more intentional approach. It further argues that navigating different forms of power is a critical skill for bricolage, and that doing so can help to ensure rigour.
