Texte intégralFrom his first novel Ghostwritten in 1999 to his most recent (Utopia Avenue in 2020), contemporary British author David Mitchell has tried to build a unique and interconnected world of fiction which keeps growing with each new publication. This desire for continuity can also be seen in the coherence of his themes, among which the question of communication and languages stands prominently. This recurring leitmotif prompted us to examine the notion of translation throughout his work. This thesis will examine three aspects of the writer in relation to translation: the translator characters in his fiction, his experience as a translator, and the translation of his works. Each of these parts highlights the uniqueness of this artist in regards to translation. His novels resurrect the historical interpreters of the Japanese tradition, the Oranda tsujis of the 17th century, and showcase such figures as polyglot immortals and amateur translators, new archetypes which have not or rarely been explored in the field of the fictional turn of the translator. David Mitchell's own experience as a professional translator is just as special, in his choice to share with the world (and with the help of his wife Keiko Yoshida) an English version of The Reason I Jump, the memoir of a young non-verbal autistic teenager called Naoki Higashida. The complex genesis of the original work, as well as the motivations - namely filial love - behind his translation, make it a fascinating object of study, as much in the field of ethics as neurology. This section will also explore another of David Mitchell's lesser-known but nonetheless original translations: his participation in the collaborative project Multiples, an international exercise in relay translation. The final part of this PhD thesis will explore the ways in which Manuel Berri — David Mitchell's unofficial assigned translator since the start of his career — has risen to the challenge of his surprisingly tricky prose. We will analyse how he managed to overcome such obstacles as implicit cultural references, neologisms and the orality of non-standard English, whether by using translator's notes (which we are trying to legitimise) or, more often, by using his creativity to convey all the versatility of our author in the French language. This thesis will conclude with an exclusive interview of David Mitchell himself, in which he offers us his views on translation and reveal some of his future translation-related projects, proving once again how much this obsession keeps haunting his literary output

Texte intégralAt the intersection of the history of linguistic ideas and the history of representations, this thesis studies scholarly and fictional discourses on deafness between the final years of the Ancien Régime and the beginning of the Restoration (1776-1815). This period covers the years where the Abbé de L'Épée and the Abbé Sicard carried out their work. It matches the period of changes in the course of the history of the deaf people in France and how they were considered. The emergence of a specialist discourse on deafness, the setting up of institutions dedicated to the collective education of deaf people and the development of sign language and their literacy, mark the beginning of the integration of deaf people into society. Educators and philosophers are not the only ones to talk about deafness; the deaf people and their education also entrhal novelists and authors of short fiction. The sentimental novel seized the silent character and its sign language, sometimes separating him from deafness. Without doubt, the novelists have been interested much more by muteness than deafness, because the former enabled them to question the social function of speech. In their works, the novelists use contrast to reveal the malfunction of speech caused by the Revolution. The aim of this thesis is twofold. First, we put speech on deafness back in the scholarly context of the times and explain how it helps us understand the linguistic, anthropological and philosophical changes of this period. Secondly, through the history of the representations, we show how knowledge and fiction meet in the process of metaphorization of the idea of deafness of the end of the eighteenth century.

Texte intégralThis dissertation intends to outline and study “commentary fictions,” or novels that comment on other works rather than represent a referential reality. Against intertextual assimilation, these fictions “of the second degree” rely on a hypertextual basis, and depict the writing, reading and editing processes. As demonstrated in Mark Z. Danielewski’s experimentations (House of Leaves), Pierre Senges’ wit (Fragments de Lichtenberg) and Roberto Bolaño’s investigations (2666), reading literary fiction becomes an act of hermeneutical or bio-bibliographical research. However, these secondary novels are not necessarily enclosed within a self-referential framework: their relationship with reference, i.e. the way fiction is built on the implicit, is amended by a multiplicity of fragmentary references to their sources. A second-degree representation is indeed different from one that follows a “frame of reference”, either considered as the world “itself” or as its perceptions, verbal constructions or scientific descriptions. Commentary fictions look into the conditions of a literary representation that is no longer a subjective depiction, but rather a mere object with its own random – but defined – rules. Mimetic representations of extralinguistic worlds are replaced by significations of already finished works. This shift does not yet lead to the end of referential reality. Formerly a dogmatic frame, the reference is converted into an explicit, concrete and movable layer: it is now a contingent background. In commentary fictions, variation, doubt and dis/illusion are bound to a reference that becomes, in short, speculative. One could easily associate this idea with certain contemporary philosophical trends, as found in the works of Quentin Meillassoux, Graham Harman or Tristan Garcia, amongst others. Indeed, their attempt to “think the thing outside the thought” leads to an absence of necessity. Their attention to things allows an object-oriented ontology which relies on a speculation of the world’s contingence. Commentary fictions could therefore be regarded as representations of a virtual reality more so than stipulations of possible worlds. This work, then, aims to explore the world’s figuration (or representation in the second degree) in speculative literature

Texte intégralThis thesis wants to propose a new perspective on the oeuvre of the Marquis de Sade by taking into account his late works La Marquise de Gange, Adélaïde de Brunswick, princess of Saxony and the Histoire secrète d'Isabelle de Bavière, queen of France.In a first approach his more known libertine novels are examined from a historical point of view. In the course of reading Sades texts one can observe not only a heterogeneous formal character tending towards an overload into all genres. In particular one also finds the manner of expounding the problems of history and time (in the sense of an acute consciousness for the passing of time, combined with reflections on truth and moral) typical of the literature of Enlightenment. In every text one rediscovers the same ambivalence of intention - be it the escape from time and the denial of history, be it an acute and lucid conscience that finds refuge in the letters of the text and behind bodily metaphors and lubricious biographies.The second part of the present thesis wants to understand the three historic novels of the Marquis de Sade as unique documents of the literary and ideological development of an author in post-revolutionary France, a man of letters henceforth in his seventies confronted with new structures of a world in plain process of reforming.By means of the categories analyzed here, it is possible to remove from these three historic novels the common substrate of what I, in the wake of Paul Ricoeur, have in fact defined as the fiction of time. In a particularly acute manner the fiction of time suffers the aporia of time. This is the symptom of a historic faintness - that of the overwhelming experience of the Revolution, of the obscurity of a world in change and in the end of an irremediable escape from time

Texte intégralAt the dawn of the XIXth century, the acceleration of the history and the secularization which settles down, favor the social integration of the Jew. After 1789, he is emancipated and becomes a citizen. This assimilation accompanies a literary integration : the Jew becomes a fictional character, multiplying his appearances in the french works of the XIXth century. We shall analyze the way the writers put at a distance stereotypes in the elaboration of a Jewish character, to imagine a shady and significant literary and psychological depth. We shall see in what these representations are also marked by a particular historic context, as the Dreyfus affair, for example. What influences the Jewish character has on the action ? Has he a fate ? Does he know love? Has he a permanent identity, or is he sensitive to the change ? The Jewish character creates a particular and problematic narrative identity, dependent on his confession. We shall analyze the being, the making and the telling of the Jewish character, and shall show how the literary construction of the Jewish character also feeds on the dialogue between text and image

This question was widely discussed in order to settle on a precise definition in the light of different approaches such as sociology, psychoanalysis and epistemology. This fad towards the identity concept keeps growing to be a fashion trend. Nevertheless, besides its moving nature, constantly changes its outlines and criteria. The notion of identity is formed according to social and political contexts proper to each society but more importantly to their use by the individual. Thus, along with this identity ferment, we wanted to analyze a set of self-narratives both motley and heterogeneous at the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The first objective behind this study is to highlight the diversity of women’s writings but also highlight the recursive identity building process through the different approaches used to focus on multiple and federating social contexts in the studies pieces. The multidisciplinary method allowed a permeability to the literature by shifting it further from a holistic to an open and democratic one
