Résumé :
ObjectiveTo determine the met need for emergency obstetric care (EmOC) services in three Payams of Torit County, South Sudan in 2015 and to determine the frequency of each major obstetric complication.DesignThis was a retrospective cross-sectional study.SettingFour primary healthcare centres (PHCCs) and one state hospital in three payams (administrative areas that form a county) in Torit County, South Sudan.ParticipantsAll admissions in the obstetrics and gynaecology wards (a total of 2466 patient admission files) in 2015 in all the facilities designated to conduct deliveries in the study area were reviewed to identify obstetric complications.Primary and secondary outcome measuresThe primary outcome was met need for EmOC, which was defined as the proportion of all women with direct major obstetric complications in 2015 treated in health facilities providing EmOC services. The frequency of each complication and the interventions for treatment were the secondary outcomes.ResultsTwo hundred and fifty four major obstetric complications were admitted in 2015 out of 390 expected from 2602 pregnancies, representing 65.13% met need. The met need was highest (88%) for Nyong Payam, an urban area, compared with the other two rural payams, and 98.8% of the complications were treated from the hospital, while no complications were treated from three PHCCs. The most common obstetric complications were abortions (45.7%), prolonged obstructed labour (23.2%) and haemorrhage (16.5%). Evacuation of the uterus for retained products (42.5%), caesarean sections (32.7%) and administration of oxytocin for treatment of postpartum haemorrhage (13.3%) were the most common interventions.ConclusionThe met need for EmOC in Torit County is low, with 35% of women with major obstetric complications not accessing care, and there is disparity with Nyong Payam having a higher met need. We suggest more support supervision to the PHCCs to increase access for the rural population.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTHistorians usually trace the start of the first civil war in the Southern Sudan to the Torit mutiny of 1955. However, organized political violence did not reach the level of civil war until 1963. This article argues that 1955–62 was a period of increasing political tension, local low-intensity violence, and social and economic stagnation. It shows how these conditions influenced the attitudes of government officials, informed the policies that they pursued, and made a Southern insurgency likely. This historical analysis helps explain why a full-scale civil war began in late 1963 and why it was not avoided.

Résumé :
AbstractIn 1963, unrest in Sudan's three southern provinces (today's South Sudan) escalated into a civil war between the government and the Anya-Nya rebellion. The subsequent eight years of violence has hitherto largely escaped scrutiny from academic researchers and has remained a subject of popular imagination and politicised narratives. This article demonstrates how this history can be explored with greater nuance, thereby establishing a local history of a postcolonial civil war. Focusing on the garrison town of Torit, our research reveals a localised and personalised rebellion, made up of a constellation of parochial armed groups. This new history also demonstrates how these parties built upon experiences from imperial conquest and colonial rule when entrenching violent wartime practices such as mass displacement and encampment, the raising of local militias and intelligence networks, and the deliberate starvation of civilians — all common methods in subsequent wars.

The Hamiltonian shape invariant of a domain $X \subset \mathbb {R}^4$ , as a subset of $\mathbb {R}^2$ , describes the product Lagrangian tori which may be embedded in $X$ . We provide necessary and sufficient conditions to determine whether or not a path in the shape invariant can lift, that is, be realized as a smooth family of embedded Lagrangian tori, when $X$ is a basic $4$ -dimensional toric domain such as a ball $B^4(R)$ , an ellipsoid $E(a,b)$ with ${b}/{a} \in \mathbb {N}_{\geq ~2}$ , or a polydisk $P(c,d)$ . As applications, via the path lifting, we can detect knotted embeddings of product Lagrangian tori in many toric $X$ . We also obtain novel obstructions to symplectic embeddings between domains that are more general than toric concave or toric convex.

Résumé :
In South Sudan, child marriage is often positioned as a cultural practice tied to conflict and displacement as well as gender norms affirming that girls should marry. Based on findings of a multi-sectoral gender assessment conducted by Save the Children in Rumbek, Torit, Malualkon, Bor and Kapoeta, our paper draws attention to multiple, connected drivers of child marriage. Drawing specifically on findings related to child marriage, we suggest the need to understand child marriage in the context of cycles of poverty and inter-clan fighting. In many communities, cattle form the basis for the ‘bride price’, driving cattle raiding, due to pressure on males to marry. The ability to pay the bride price may be an indicator of manhood in some pastoralist communities of South Sudan. We suggest that while humanitarian interventions tend to fixate on empowering girls or addressing gender norms girls face, less attention is placed on the ‘demand side’ of child marriage – on the gender norms pushing boys and men to marry girls. Our paper emphasises the importance of tackling norms from both the perspective of girls as well as boys and men within a broader context of improving livelihoods in South Sudan.

The recent spate of firefighter fatalities has put the spotlight on Rapid InterventionTeam (RIT), which quickly rescues isolated firefighters. This study examines overseas casesof RIT/s to obtain implications for the operation of Korean RIT/s. RIC in the U.S., BA emergency team in the U. K., ANTS in Germany, and RIT in Canada are analyzed in thefollowing order: ① Concept, ② Operational status, ③ Training program and Equipment. Based on the analysis of overseas cases, the following are the implications for the design andoperation of Korean RIT/s: ① RIT/s should be implemented first in metropolitan areas andlarge cities rather than uniformly across the country. ② The initial RIT should be organizedamong the first responders to arrive at the accident site so that they can respond quickly toisolated incidents. ③ RIT/s should be mandatory for incidents at Response Level 2 and aboveand can be deployed at the discretion of the on-site commander for incidents below the level. ④ RIT should consist of at least four members, but the initial-RIT should consist of at leasttwo members if it is difficult to organize four. ⑤ The training program should include theprinciples and procedures of the RIT, rescue techniques and equipment, team cooperation andcommunication, and simulation. ⑥ Given that additional personnel cannot be provided toRIT/s now, improvements to personal protective equipment should be prioritized.

We prove the existence of a one-parameter family of nondisplaceable Lagrangian tori near a linear chain of Lagrangian 2-spheres in a symplectic 4-manifold. When the symplectic structure is rational, we prove that the deformed Floer cohomology groups of these tori are nontrivial. The proof uses the idea of toric degeneration to analyze the full potential functions with bulk deformations of these tori.

A toric hyperplane is the preimage of a point in a circle of a continuous surjective group homomorphism from the n-torus to the circle. A toric hyperplane arrangement is a finite collection of such hyperplanes. In this paper, we study the combinatorial properties of toric hyperplane arrangements on n-tori which are spanning and in general position. Specifically, we describe the symmetry of f-vectors arising in such arrangements and a few applications of the result to count configurations of hyperplanes.

Résumé :
Abstract Mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) is a central integrator of nutrient and growth factor inputs that controls cell growth in all eukaryotes. Rapamycin and its analogs (rapalogs) have been approved for the treatment of relapsed mantle cell lymphoma. A large proportion of aggressive B-cell lymphoma patients, however, respond poorly to rapalogs. The second generation of mTOR inhibitors function as ATP-competitive inhibitors (TORi), directly targeting the mTOR catalytic site. TORis have been proven to be more effective than rapalogs in cancer treatment. However, the mechanism underlying the cytotoxic effect of TORis in aggressive B-cell lymphomas remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that TORi-induced apoptosis is predominantly dependent on loss of mTORC1-mediated 4EBP phosphorylation. Knocking out Rictor, a key component of mTORC2, or inhibiting p70S6K has little effect on TORi-induced apoptosis. In contrast, increasing the EIF4E:4EBP ratio by either overexpressing EIF4E or knocking out 4EBP1/2 protected lymphoma cells from TORi-induced cytotoxicity. Furthermore, down-regulation of MCL1 and BCL-XL expression plays an important role in TORi-induced apoptosis whereas BCL-2, in cells with high expression, confers resistance to TORi treatment. Based on the mechanism study, we demonstrated that BH3 profiling, primarily NOXA and HRK stimulation, can effectively predict the cytotoxicity of the TORi in lymphoma cells. Also, in combination with pro-apoptotic drugs, especially BCL-2 inhibitors, the TORi exerted powerful anti-tumor effects both in vitro and in vivo. Taken together, this study provides mechanistic insight in TORi treatment in aggressive B-cell lymphoma and identified a mean to predict and improve its effectiveness clinically. Résumé :
Introduction: One in 10 babies is born preterm globally. Preterm birth is a major cause of mortality among children under 5 years old especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The socio-economic and clinical characteristics associated with survival of preterm babies admitted in Torit State Hospital are unknown. This study describes these characteristics to inform quality-of-care initiatives to improve preterm neonatal care. Method: A retrospective study was conducted of the medical records of 67 preterm neonates admitted from 1st January to 31st December 2021. Neonatal outcome at discharge was recorded as alive, dead, or absconded while neonatal clinical and maternal socio-economic characteristics were recorded as independent variables. The data were analysed using SPSS Statistics software version 21. Descriptive statistics including frequencies and proportions were calculated. Differences in the proportions were tested using the chi-squared statistic. All significance levels were set at p ≤ 0.05. Results: Of the 67 preterm babies admitted, 47 (70.1%) were discharged alive with a significant increase in body weight, 18 (26.9%) died and the outcomes of two patients were not recorded. The ability to suckle at the time of admission (p=0.01) and having a mother educated to at least primary level (p=0.035) were significantly associated with higher preterm survival. Conclusions: Premature mortality was common among preterm babies who were not able to suckle at the time of admission and lack of formal maternal education was associated with low survival rates. Educating girls to at least primary level can contribute significantly to preterm neonatal survival.

Résumé :
South Sudan implemented Ebola virus disease preparedness interventions aiming at preventing and rapidly containing any importation of the virus from the Democratic Republic of Congo starting from August 2018. One of these interventions was a surveillance system which included an Ebola alert management system. This study analyzed the performance of this system. A descriptive cross-sectional study of the Ebola virus disease alerts which were reported in South Sudan from August 2018 to November 2019 was conducted using both quantitative and qualitative methods. As of 30 November 2019, a total of 107 alerts had been detected in the country out of which 51 (47.7%) met the case definition and were investigated with blood samples collected for laboratory confirmation. Most (81%) of the investigated alerts were South Sudanese nationals. The alerts were identified by health workers (53.1%) at health facilities, at the community (20.4%) and by screeners at the points of entry (12.2%). Most of the investigated alerts were detected from the high-risk states of Gbudwe (46.9%), Jubek (16.3%) and Torit (10.2%). The investigated alerts commonly presented with fever, bleeding, headache and vomiting. The median timeliness for deployment of Rapid Response Team was less than one day and significantly different between the 6-month time periods (K-W = 7.7567; df = 2; p = 0.0024) from 2018 to 2019. Strengths of the alert management system included existence of a dedicated national alert hotline, case definition for alerts and rapid response teams while the weaknesses were occasional inability to access the alert toll-free hotline and lack of transport for deployment of the rapid response teams which often constrain quick response. This study demonstrates that the Ebola virus disease alert management system in South Sudan was fully functional despite the associated challenges and provides evidence to further improve Ebola preparedness in the country.

Résumé :
We show that the moduli spaces of irreducible labeled parametrized marked rational curves in toric varieties can be embedded into algebraic tori such that their tropicalizations are the analogous tropical moduli spaces. These embeddings are shown to respect the evaluation morphisms in the sense that evaluation commutes with tropicalization. With this particular setting in mind, we prove a general correspondence theorem for enumerative problems which are defined via “evaluation maps” in both the algebraic and tropical world. Applying this to our motivational example, we show that the tropicalizations of the curves in a given toric variety which intersect the boundary divisors in their interior and with prescribed multiplicities, and pass through an appropriate number of generic points are precisely the tropical curves in the corresponding tropical toric variety satisfying the analogous condition. Moreover, the intersection-theoretically defined multiplicities of the tropical curves are equal to the numbers of algebraic curves tropicalizing to them.

AbstractIn this paper, we introduce the notion of maximal actions of compact tori on smooth manifolds and study compact connected complex manifolds equipped with maximal actions of compact tori. We give a complete classification of such manifolds, in terms of combinatorial objects, which are triples {(\Delta,\mathfrak{h},G)} of nonsingular complete fan Δ in {\mathfrak{g}}, complex vector subspace {\mathfrak{h}} of {\mathfrak{g}^{\mathbb{C}}} and compact torus G satisfying certain conditions. We also give an equivalence of categories with suitable definitions of morphisms in these families, like toric geometry. We obtain several results as applications of our equivalence of categories; complex structures on moment-angle manifolds, classification of holomorphic nondegenerate {\mathbb{C}^{n}}-actions on compact connected complex manifolds of complex dimension n, and construction of concrete examples of non-Kähler manifolds.

A field experiment was carried out at Lumle Agricultural Research Centre (LARC) farm, Nepal, during the winter seasons of 1992/93 and 1993/94 in order to study the profitability of intercropping wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) with tori (Brassica campestris var. toria) and pea (Pisum sativum L.). A sole crop of wheat planted at 120 kg seed ha−1 was compared with sole crops of tori and of pea planted at 8 kg ha−1 and 60 kg seed ha−1, respectively, wheat+tori mixed-intercropped at 120[ratio ]6, 120[ratio ]4 and 120[ratio ]2 kg seed ha−1and wheat+pea at 120[ratio ]45, 120[ratio ]30 and 120[ratio ]15 kg seed ha−1.Results over the two seasons showed that the intercropping of wheat+pea was profitable in terms of overall grain yield, land advantage, monetary advantage, economic return and meeting the dietary requirements of the subsistence farmers, although the sole crop of pea gave the highest net return. Mixing pea with wheat did not reduce wheat yields in either year except when pea was sown at 45 kg seed ha−1, which reduced wheat yield significantly in the first season. For wheat+pea intercropping, sowing pea at 30–45 kg ha−1 was the most profitable. The wheat+tori intercrop did not perform as well and was not as profitable as either sole crop. Intercropping of tori had a negative effect on wheat yield at all seed rates in the first year.

Résumé :
Introduction: The substantial impact of cervical cancer, particularly in low-resource environments like South Sudan, underscores the urgent need for preventive solutions, as access remains sparse. Contemporary treatment options while accessible, bring about severe side effects without greatly extending disease-free survival, emphasizing the importance of preventive screening, especially for adult women. The glaring absence of screening leads to women potentially suffering from progressed cervical cancer, a grim reality in South Sudan that contributes to around 12% of the female disease burden. Consequently, it is vital to examine the reach, associated elements, and health system initiatives aimed at cervical cancer screening in this region. This study intended to conduct an in-depth analysis of South Sudan's health system with a focus on understanding and evaluating the current interventions in place for cervical cancer screening among women. Methods: The research was based on a community-oriented cross-sectional survey aimed at evaluating cervical cancer screening habits among women of childbearing age in five South Sudanese counties. The participants were women aged 26-65 years, with 575 samples in total. A four-stage random sampling procedure was followed in each stratum, focusing on half the Payams per county. Structured interviews were utilized for primary data collection, supplemented by key informant discussions for qualitative data. Descriptive statistics and log-binomial regression models were used for data analysis. The study was conducted in Torit, Magwi, Terekeka, Raja, and Aweil North, targeting women of reproductive age due to their HPV infection risk. Results: The study found that only 11.5% of women in South Sudan had been screened for cervical cancer. Factors associated with cervical cancer screening rates included women who reported shorter waiting times for medical services (aPR=3.47 [CI=1.69-7.14]), received HPV vaccination (aPR=4.71 [CI=3.04-7.31]), kind and caring health workers (aPR=3.35 [CI=1.47-7.63]), and integrated cervical screening facilities (aPR=2.28 [CI=1.45-3.60]) had higher screening rates. However, the study found little evidence of community or institutional interventions aimed at increasing cervical cancer screening rates. Conclusion: Based on the findings, cervical cancer screening coverage for women in South Sudan is very low, at only 11.5%. However, certain factors were found to be associated with higher screening prevalence, including shorter wait times, caring and kind health workers, and integrated screening facilities were also associated with higher screening prevalence. It is concerning that there were virtually no interventions at the institutional level to increase screening rates. These findings suggest the need for targeted interventions to improve access to screening services and strengthen health systems to increase cervical cancer screening coverage in South Sudan.

Résumé :
Here we derive explicit formulas that parameterize the Cassinian ovals based on their recognition as the so called spiric sections of the standard tori in the three-dimensional Euclidean space which was suggested in the ancient time by Perseus. These formulas derived originally in terms of the toric parameters are expressed through the usual geometrical parameters that enter in the present day definition of the Cassinian curves. All three types of morphologically different curves are illustrated graphically using the corresponding sets of parameters and respective formulas. The geometry of the ovals can be studied in full details and this is done here to some extent. As examples explicit formulas for the embraced volume and the surface area of the dumbbell like surface generated by the oval are presented. Last, but not least, new alternative explicit parameterizations of the Cassinian ovals are derived in polar, and even in non-canonical Monge forms.

Résumé :
In this paper, we analyze displaceability of pre-Lagrangian toric fibers in contact toric manifolds. While every symplectic toric manifold contains at least one non-displaceable Lagrangian toric fiber and infinitely many displaceable ones, we show that this is not the case for contact toric manifolds. More precisely, we prove that for the contact toric manifolds [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] all pre-Lagrangian toric fibers are displaceable, and that for all contact toric manifolds for which the toric action is free, except possibly non-trivial [Formula: see text]-bundles over [Formula: see text], all pre-Lagrangian toric fibers are non-displaceable. Moreover, we also prove that if for a compact connected contact toric manifold all but finitely many pre-Lagrangian toric fibers are non-displaceable then the action is necessarily free. On the other hand, as we will discuss, displaceability of all pre-Lagrangian toric fibers seems to be related to the non-orderability of the underlying contact manifolds.

Résumé :
A field experiment was conducted during winter (rabi) season of 2003-04 and 2004-05 at Almora to evaluate the varietal performance of lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus) and toria (Brassica campestris L. var. black toria) with wheat (Triicum aestivum L. emend. Fiori & Paol.) intercropping system. Intercropping of wheat + lentil and wheat + toria showed an added advantage over sole and mixed cropping. In intercropping systems, lentil yield was higher with 'VL Masoor 4' (0.35 tlha) than with 'VL Masoor 120'. Similarly, 'VL Toria 2' gave higher yield (0.35 tlha) than 'VL Toria 1'. The highest wheat-equivalent yield (5.87 tlha), net return (Rs 19,65l/ha), benefit : cost ratio (2.1), mon- etary advantage (5,172) and land-equivalent ratio (1.26) were obtained under wheat + lentil ('VL Masoor 4') inter- cropping, followed by wheat + toria 'VL Toria 2'. Negative values of aggressivity under intercrop showed that wheat was dominant, and lentil and toria were the dominated crops in the systems. Competitive ratio and relative crowd- ing coefficient of wheat was higher under intercropping of wheat with lentil 'VL Masoor 120' and toria 'VL Toria 1'. Relative crowding coefficient of the system was highest for wheat + lentil ('VL Masoor 4') (5.72), followed by wheat + toria ('VL Toria 2') (4.77). Thus lentil 'VL Masoor 4' and toria 'VL Toria 2' were found suitable under intercropping system with wheat in comparison with other varieties.

Résumé :
We evaluated the rotational stability of a new toric intraocular lens (IOL), HOYA XY-1 toric IOL that is an improved version of HOYA 355 toric IOL, with longer overall length (13.0 mm vs. 12.5 mm), shortened unfolding time, and texture processing of the surface of haptics. Data from 193 eyes of 165 patients (76.4 ± 8.3 years old) with preoperative corneal astigmatism exceeding 0.75 diopters who had undergone phacoemulsification and toric IOL implantation were collected and analyzed. Corneal astigmatism, refractive astigmatism, and uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were evaluated before and 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month after surgery. The degree of IOL decentration, IOL tilt, and toric axis misalignment was assessed at 1 day and 1 month postoperatively. Fifty eyes received AcrySof toric IOL, 51 eyes TECNIS toric IOL, 46 eyes HOYA 355 toric IOL, and 46 eyes HOYA XY-1 toric IOL. The amount of axis misalignment from the intended axis was significantly different among IOLs (p = 0.004, one-way ANOVA), and HOYA XY-1 showed significantly less amount of axis misalignment than TECNIS (p = 0.020, Tukey’s multiple comparison) and HOYA 355 (p = 0.010). The proportion of eyes that showed axis misalignment <10° at 1 month postoperatively was significantly higher with HOYA XY-1 toric IOL than with other toric IOLs (χ2 test, p = 0.020). HOYA XY-1 toric IOL, the modified version of HOYA 355 toric IOL, showed excellent rotational stability in comparison with other models of toric IOLs.

Résumé :
The goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of various risk factors on crash rates at freeway diverge areas. Crash rates data for a three-year period from 367 freeway diverge areas were used for analysis. Four candidate Tobit models were developed and compared under the Bayesian framework: a traditional Tobit model; a random parameters Tobit (RP-Tobit) model; a grouped random parameters Tobit (GRP-Tobit) model; and a random intercept Tobit (RI-Tobit). The results showed that the RP-Tobit model performs best with highest value of Rd2 as well as lowest Mean Absolute Deviance (MAD) and Deviance Information Criteria (DIC), indicating the importance of accounting for unobserved heterogeneity to improve the model fit. Both the GRP-Tobit and the RI-Tobit models provide better performance than the traditional Tobit model. The model results showed that crash rates at freeway diverge areas were positively associated with mainline annual average daily traffic (AADT) and negatively associated with ramp AADT, indicating the different mechanisms of the impact of traffic volume on crash rates at freeway diverge areas. Lane-balanced design and high speed limits at freeway diverge areas have a negative effect on crash rates. The number of lanes on mainline and ramp length have significant heterogeneous effects on crash rates across observations. The RP-Tobit model provides a more comprehensive understanding of the heterogeneous effects of risk factors on crash rates across observations.

Résumé :
This study aims to empirically identify the factors that influence frozen dough consumption, as well as demographic characteristics, usage pattern characteristics and selection motive. As part of the research purpose, SPSS 25.0 and LIMDEP 8.0 were used, and the Tobit model was used for the determinant analysis. According to the study results, men with a high income and belonging to the WHITE occupation group showed a positive reaction to frozen dough in terms of demographic characteristics. Due to the low price and time savings, frozen dough has a positive effect on consumer spending. It was found that purchasing frozen dough for snacks had a positive effect on consumption expenditures. And it was found that epidemic factors and quality factors had a positive effect on the motivation to choose frozen dough. This study provides practical information about factors influencing frozen dough consumption expenditure.

Résumé :
In this paper, the factors affecting job satisfaction of college graduates were analyzed. Job satisfaction consists of various factors, but job satisfaction is limited to job match, job satisfaction, and wages in this paper. Job match, job satisfaction, and wages each have information on employment status and compound information on the magnitude of job satisfaction. However, many previous studies have used only information on the size of job satisfaction to analyze it, overlooking the problem of sample selection bias. In order to overcome this problem, the Tobit model was used in the analysis. The main results are summarized as follows. First, Tobit model was statistically significant. Second, it can be seen that as male compared to female, age, and average GPA increase, job satisfaction increases significantly. Third, it can be seen that natural science compared to arts is higher, and the higher the major satisfaction and parents' income, the higher the job satisfaction. Finally, as a result of homogeneous test of the regression coefficients for each category level of independent variables, it can be seen that there is a statistically significant difference in most of the independent variables.

Résumé :
Abstract We investigate Néron models of Jacobians of singular curves over strictly Henselian discretely valued fields and their behavior under tame base change. For a semiabelian variety, this behavior is governed by a finite sequence of (a priori) real numbers between 0 and 1, called jumps. The jumps are conjectured to be rational, which is known in some cases. The purpose of this paper is to prove this conjecture in the case where the semiabelian variety is the Jacobian of a geometrically integral curve with a push-out singularity. Along the way, we prove the conjecture for algebraic tori which are induced along finite separable extensions and generalize Raynaud’s description of the identity component of the Néron model of the Jacobian of a smooth curve (in terms of the Picard functor of a proper, flat, and regular model) to our situation. The main technical result of this paper is that the exact sequence that decomposes the Jacobian of one of our singular curves into its toric and Abelian parts extends to an exact sequence of Néron models. Previously, only split semiabelian varieties were known to have this property.

Abstract We prove that the mean Euler characteristic of a Gorenstein toric contact manifold, that is, a good toric contact manifold with zero 1st Chern class, is equal to half the normalized volume of the corresponding toric diagram and give some applications. A particularly interesting one, obtained using a result of Batyrev and Dais, is the following: twice the mean Euler characteristic of a Gorenstein toric contact manifold is equal to the Euler characteristic of any crepant toric symplectic filling, that is, any toric symplectic filling with zero 1st Chern class.

Résumé :
Abstract A complete nonsingular toric variety (called a toric manifold) is over $P$ if its quotient by the compact torus is homeomorphic to $P$ as a manifold with corners. Bott manifolds are toric manifolds over an $n$-cube $I^n$ and blowing them up at a fixed point produces toric manifolds over $\operatorname{vc}(I^n)$ an $n$-cube with one vertex cut. They are all projective. On the other hand, Oda’s three-fold, the simplest non-projective toric manifold, is over $\operatorname{vc}(I^3)$. In this paper, we classify toric manifolds over $\operatorname{vc}(I^n)$$(n\ge 3)$ as varieties and as smooth manifolds. It consequently turns out that there are many non-projective toric manifolds over $\operatorname{vc}(I^n)$ but they are all diffeomorphic, and toric manifolds over $\operatorname{vc}(I^n)$ in some class are determined by their cohomology rings as varieties.

Résumé :
AIM: To investigate and compare the quality of life, satisfaction, contrast sensitivity, glare, depth perception, and intraocular lens (IOL) rotation in patients who underwent trifocal toric and bifocal toric IOLs. METHODS: A total of 80 eyes of 40 patients were included in this prospective study. Twenty patients in each group were implanted with trifocal toric and bifocal toric IOL, respectively. Preoperative and postoperative 6-month measurements were recorded for both patient groups. Comprehensive anterior and posterior segment examinations, distance-intermediate-near visual acuity values and the visual function scale questionnaire results were evaluated at these examinations. Patient satisfaction, contrast sensitivity, glare, intermediate-near and distance stereopsis and IOL rotation were also evaluated. RESULTS: No significant difference was found between the groups in terms of distance and near visual acuities (P=0.269, P=0.451). Intermediate visual acuity was significantly increased in the trifocal toric group (P<0.001). The visual function scale results were increased after surgery in both groups (P=0.001 and P<0.001), with no difference determined between them (P=0.158 and P=0.691). The number of patients wearing glasses was low in both groups and there was no significant difference between the groups (P>0.05). The overall satisfaction in the trifocal toric group was significantly higher than in the bifocal toric group (P=0.03). The highest sensitivity was observed at 6 cpd spatial frequency in all patients under photopic conditions (1.80±0.24 logU, 1.74±0.20 logU). Distance-intermediate-near binocular depth perception results in both groups were higher in the trifocal toric group (P=0.02, 0.048, 0.003, respectively). Although there was no significant difference for 3 meters stereopsis, the trifocal toric group had higher depth perception (P=0.577). Mean rotation was 5.76°±3.93° in the trifocal toric group and 12°±7.1° in the bifocal toric group. CONCLUSION: Better results in the middle distance are obtained in the trifocal toric group and less IOL rotation due to digital system-coordinated surgery. Moreover, the overall satisfaction in the trifocal toric group is significantly higher than in the bifocal toric group.

Résumé :
IntroductionAstigmatism is a common ocular condition that causes reduced visual acuity. The condition is highly prevalent in cataract patients, with preoperative astigmatism of at least 0.5 diopters being present in 78 percent of cataractous eyes. Residual uncorrected astigmatism after cataract surgery is associated with significant costs, primarily driven by the lifetime cost of spectacles (estimated at EUR 1,608 to EUR 3,608 in Europe). Toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) are a safe and effective way of correcting astigmatism, while also reducing the need for spectacles after cataract surgery. The objective of this review was to assess the published evidence relating to spectacle independence in patients implanted with toric IOLs, compared with those receiving non-toric IOLs with or without astigmatism reducing surgical interventions (SI).MethodsA systematic literature search was conducted of the EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library databases. Articles were selected if they included adult patients undergoing phacoemulsification who had age-related cataracts and preoperative regular corneal astigmatism of at least 0.5 diopters, and assessed spectacle independence as an outcome.ResultsSeven studies met the inclusion criteria: four randomized controlled trials and one non-randomized comparative study comparing toric IOLs with non-toric IOLs, and two randomized controlled trials comparing toric IOLs with non-toric IOLs plus SI. Spectacle independence was evaluated as the number of patients who reported not requiring spectacles for distance viewing at 3 or 6 months. Figures for spectacle independence ranged from 60 to 100 percent for toric IOLs, 31 to 50 percent for non-toric IOLs, and 36 to 65 percent for non-toric IOLs plus SI. In each study, toric IOLs demonstrated superior spectacle independence compared with the control group.ConclusionsThe benefits of toric IOL implantation for astigmatic cataract patients included a higher rate of spectacle independence, compared with non-toric IOLs with or without SI. For this group of patients, the lifetime economic burden of spectacle acquisition costs can be reduced with the implantation of toric IOLs during cataract surgery.
