Résumé :
Developing countries are increasingly decentralizing forest governance by granting indigenous groups and other local communities formal legal title to land. However, the effects of titling on forest cover are unclear. Rigorous analyses of titling campaigns are rare, and related theoretical and empirical research suggests that they could either stem or spur forest damage. We analyze such a campaign in the Peruvian Amazon, where more than 1,200 indigenous communities comprising some 11 million ha have been titled since the mid-1970s. We use community-level longitudinal data derived from high-resolution satellite images to estimate the effect of titling between 2002 and 2005 on contemporaneous forest clearing and disturbance. Our results indicate that titling reduces clearing by more than three-quarters and forest disturbance by roughly two-thirds in a 2-y window spanning the year title is awarded and the year afterward. These results suggest that awarding formal land titles to local communities can advance forest conservation.

Résumé :
The article deals with the optimization of the cataloging process of dissertation abstracts at the State Scientific and Technical Library (SSTL) of Ukraine. Automation of entering bibliographic descriptions of dissertation abstracts into the database is based on the fact that according to the current rules a bibliographic description of the publication is created from the title page. However, abstracts do not have a cover sheet, so the main information is taken from the cover. According to the rules for composing a thesis abstract, the title page is designed so that each paragraph contains certain bibliographic information. The process of automating the creation of a bibliographic description of abstracts, in fact, involves the programmatic placement of indices of division in the text from the covers of these documents, which facilitates their further import into the relevant database. The analyzed automated abstract introduction process was developed with the help of VBA software for Word and tested in the Scientific Research and Development Fund department of the SSTL.

Résumé :
As Korea grew after liberation, social and cultural changes occurred and were reflected in the content and cover design of coming-of-age novels. In a situation where Korea's bildungsroman is also changing and developing, we found that research on cover design for this was very insufficient, and attempted to study the characteristic semantic system of the cover design of Korean bildungsroman by era. The research method targets the cover designs of 166 coming-of-age novels published from the 1970s to 2023. First, the meaning of keywords and titles by era of the content of the coming-of-age novels is analyzed, and second, the meaning of the cover design of the coming-of-age novels is visualized. Analyze it by dividing it into images, colors, and typography, and check the flow and patterns of change by era. Third, we analyzed the relationship between keywords and visual elements by era in the content of coming-of-age novels. Looking at the analysis results, firstly, the composition of the parts of speech in the title by era appeared to be diversifying and becoming more complex, from 1 type of ‘noun’ structure in the 1970s to 17 types of parts of speech in the 2020s. Second, in terms of images, the oil painting technique of illustrations was used the most, and as the 2000s progressed, the frequency of using the entire cover as an image increased, and the use of stripes also gradually expanded. In terms of color, in the 1970s the hue distribution was medium brightness and low saturation, in the 1990s it was a hue distribution of wide brightness and saturation with warm colors and neutral colors, and in the 2020s the hue distribution was again centered on neutral colors and cool colors with medium brightness and low saturation. appear. In terms of typography, horizontal writing, center alignment, single line, serif, asymmetrical layout, and color changes were used to emphasize headings. Third, the concreteness and abstractness of titles and images were analyzed. In the 1970s, abstract expressions were very high, and concrete expressions were used more in the 2000s. In terms of visualization of the title, the average matching rate was 63%, and it was analyzed that the specificity of the title affects image visualization. In general, keyword visualization was relatively high in the 1970s, but the matching rate gradually decreased thereafter.

Résumé :
The research dealt with two prominent components of the novel: the title and the cover. This is because these are the gateways for the reader to enter the world of surprise and interpretation. They are also the trigger that arouses the reader’s passion towards the text and interact with it. The study dealt with these components , their definition, importance and status in guiding the reader, and their role in highlighting the text in an artistic and aesthetic way that helps the recipient to decipher semantics, and to show its artistic and creative dimensions. The analysis began with the title because of its great importance in producing the narrative’s discourse. It is the cornerstone on which the author builds his idea, and carries the most intense and suggestive semantics. The title also constitutes the bridge that connects both the dispatcher and the receiver together. The cover is also an essential component, not only because it contains the text inside, but because it carries symbols that suggest specific indications that the writer wants to allude to . The cover had on it the title, the author's name and biography , critical opinions, and a quote from the novel epitomizing the novel’s tragedy. It also contained many plastic paintings such as a hand, splashed blood, palm trees, buildings, etc., as well as colors and drawings extracted from the text. The research also analyzed the connotations carried by the components of the cover as a whole, and it showed the interrelationship among its different components. It also revealed the core idea of the novel, which indicates consistency, harmony and unity of all the elements that make up the text.

The title of this article may be a bit ostentatious, but it describes a simple yet rather dramatic procedure for producing symmetrical tessellated patterns. I feel that mathematics is all around us if we would only care to look. It is easy to remind students of mosaic tiling patterns, hexagonal or other interlocking paving patterns, or Escher's work. Recently I discovered that simple dot grids in a square (fig. I) or in a triangle (fig. 2) can produce tessellations (interlocking patterns that cover a surface).

Résumé :
The article is devoted to the analysis of sources containing information on the land heraldry of the Tsardom of Moscovy, which reflected territorial title of the Russian rulers. The historiography usually mentions 5–6 artefacts and pictorial sources with images of such coats of arms. In fact, the complex of these sources can be significantly expanded. The author has managed to collect information about ten artefacts, two visual and four written sources, which allow to follow the evolution of the title heraldry in pre-Petrine Russia starting from the 16th century. Furthermore, two seals descriptions containing information about land coats of arms remain unpublished. The analysis of sources leads to the following conclusions. The beginning of the Russian title heraldry dates back to the reign of Ivan the Terrible. It was probably connected with refining of his territorial titles after the Livonian War. The Great Seal of Ivan the Terrible (late 1570s) has a set of title seals with images, most of them quite simple. These emblems reflect mainly natural or economic features of specific lands. Some emblems are purely symbolic, some borrow directly from Western European heraldry. These title emblems (called seals prior to the 18th century) continued up to the Romanovs’ reign. For instance, the front of the seal of Ivan the Terrible became a source for title emblems reproduced on the armor of Pseudo-Demetrius I, which was made by Western European masters. They probably took their cue from an imprint of the front side of the seal sent with the order. Emblems from the reverse side of the seal were not reproduced on the armor. Under Mikhail Fyodorovich (apparently, in late 1620s) the complex of title emblems underwent its first significant transformation. Some emblems continued to the end of the 16th century, some were formed anew. The new system of title emblems translated into a description of seals made after the Moscow fire of 1626. This document is also yet unpublished. The reform of the title seals may have been associated with making of a new complex of royal regalia in late 1620s. The new seals appeared in the composition of the cover for tsar’s saadak (quiver), which, apparently, was made at the same time.

Résumé :
This chapter examines how Jarrettsville came to be, and how even its title was eventually derived, by tracing the social life of artistic creation within it. Between 1998 and 2004, Cornelia Nixon was working on a novel titled Martha's Version, the story of Jarrettsville based entirely from Martha Jane Cairnes's first-person perspective. Nixon was sixteen years old on a cross-country flight when her mother first told her the family story that would become her inspiration for writing Jarrettsville. The chapter first narrates the true events that Nixon fictionalized in Jarrettsville before discussing her education, writing style, and literary influences; her family and personal life as raw materials for the novel; and the research process for Jarrettsville. It also considers how the practice of writing is influenced by things such as background experiences and training, and the field of creation by social interactions. Finally, it explains how Jarrettsville came to be called Jarrettsville.

Résumé :
Plant classification is quite complex and multilevel. All living organisms are divided into domains, kingdoms, types, classes, ranks, families, tribes, and species. This classification complexity is also reflected in the classification of biogeographic maps, which is much simpler. Based on floristic dependence, vegetation is grouped by connecting it into spatial (territorial) complexes. This paper presents the interfaces of mapping methods with taxonomic vegetation types at different hierarchical levels. At the same time, examples of vegetation mapping techniques from national and thematic atlases of different countries are presented in this article. UAV aerial photographs are widely used for local mapping of vegetation areas. The authors of this article propose a new methodology that can be used to assess the ecological condition of young trees and the volume of mature forest wood. The methodology is based on the separation of tree crown areas in UAV aerial photographs and photo color analysis. For automated area calculation of young trees, a PixRGB software has been developed to determine the area of pixels of the same color in aerial photographs. The software is based on the comparison of young tree crown area calculations in AutoCAD software and area measurements of individual color spectrum pixels. In the initial stage, aerial photographs are transformed to the exact size of the photographed area. Transformations were performed with an error of less than 2–3 cm. The transformation of the spectrum of aerial photographs allowed to concentrate the color of the image of young trees in a relatively narrow color range. Studies performed in 2019–2020 to assess the ecological condition of trees and the amount of wood using UAV INSPIRE 1 and PixRGB color analysis software showed the effectiveness of the applied methodology.

Résumé :
The capability of memristor devices to perform weight changes upon electrical pulses mimics the analogous firing mechanism in biological synapses. This capability delivers the potential for neuromorphic computing and pushes renewed interests in fabricating memristor with analog characteristics. Nevertheless, memristors could often exhibit digital switching, either during the set, reset, or both processes that degenerate their synaptic capability, and nanodevice engineers struggle to redesign the device to achieved analog switching. This chapter overviews some important techniques to transform the switching characteristics from digital to analog in valence change and electrochemical metallization types memristors. We cover physical dynamics involving interfacial diffusion, interfacial layer, barrier layer, deposition, and electrode engineering that can induce digital-to-analog switching transformation in memristor devices.

Résumé :
The degradation of surface water by anthropogenic activities is a global phenomenon. Surface water in the upper Crocodile River has been deteriorating over the past few decades by increased anthropogenic land use and land cover changes as areas of non-point sources of contamination. This study aimed to assess the spatial variation of physicochemical parameters and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) contamination in the Crocodile River influenced by land use and land cover change. 12 surface water samplings were collected every quarter from April 2017 to July 2018 and were analyzed by inductive coupled plasma spectrometry-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Landsat and Spot images for the period of 1999–2009 - 2018 were used for land use and land cover change detection for the upper Crocodile River catchment. Supervised approach with maximum likelihood classifier was used for the classification and generation of LULC maps for the selected periods. The results of the surface water concentrations of PTEs in the river are presented in order of abundance from Mn in October 2017 (0.34 mg/L), followed by Cu in July 2017 (0,21 mg/L), Fe in April 2017 (0,07 mg/L), Al in July 2017 (0.07 mg/L), while Zn in April 2017, October 2017 and April 2018 (0.05 mg/L). The concentrations of PTEs from water analysis reveal that Al, (0.04 mg/L), Mn (0.19 mg/L) and Fe (0.14 mg/L) exceeded the stipulated permissible threshold limit of DWAF (< 0.005 mg/L, 0.18 mg/L and 0.1 mg/L) respectively for aquatic environments. The values for Mn (0.19 mg/L) exceeded the permissible threshold limit of the US-EPA of 0.05 compromising the water quality trait expected to be good. Seasonal analysis of the PTEs concentrations in the river was significant (p > 0.05) between the wet season and the dry season. The spatial distribution of physicochemical parameters and PTEs were strongly correlated (p > 0.05) being influenced by different land use type along the river. Analysis of change detection suggests that; grassland, cropland and water bodies exhibited an increase of 26 612, 17 578 and 1 411 ha respectively, with land cover change of 23.42%, 15.05% and 1.18% respectively spanning from 1999 to 2018. Bare land and built-up declined from 1999 to 2018, with a net change of - 42 938 and − 2 663 ha respectively witnessing a land cover change of −36.81% and − 2.29% respectively from 1999 to 2018. In terms of the area under each land use and land cover change category observed within the chosen period, most significant annual change was observed in cropland (2.2%) between 1999 to 2009. Water bodies also increased by 0.1% between 1999 to 2009 and 2009 to 2018 respectively. Built-up and grassland witness an annual change rate in land use and land cover change category only between 2009 to 2018 of 0.1% and 2.7% respectively. This underscores a massive transformation driven by anthropogenic activities given rise to environmental issues in the Crocodile River catchment.

Résumé :
The change in forest cover plays a vital role in ecosystem services, atmospheric carbon balance, and, thus, climate change. In this study, land use maps for the periods 1984 and 2012, derived from Landsat TM satellite imagery, were used. The goal of this study is comparison of three procedures of artificial neural network, logistic regression, and similarity weighted instance-based learning (SIM Weight) to predict spatial trend of forest cover change. The SimWeight considers the nearest instances in the variable space, which are computed based on past changes and the relative importance of the driving variables. The LogReg approach, on the other hand, is a type of generalized linear model that assumes that the current land use pattern reflects the processes of land use in the past. Artificial Neural Network is a nonparametric algorithm that is capable of fitting complex nonlinear functions to find the relations between past changes and their driving variables. Such approaches are expected to produce better fitting between the change potential and their complex relationships with their driving variables. Artificial neural networks in comparison with logistic regression and SimWeight have higher accuracy and less error in modeling and predicting of forest changes.

Résumé :
The written culture of a people is impressive in terms of heritage documents. These include books, the press, old prints and manuscripts, maps. According to their scientific importance, the Library’s collection includes current books, old books, books that, regardless of the year of publication, have special graphic qualities of the cover, title page, valuable content, atypical format, illustrations by well-known artists, and books with special bibliophile value with the signature or autograph of the author/donor. In libraries, such documents come from private donations and libraries; they are collected by professional people who activated in a certain period of time. These donations are managed in the form of special collections at the Arts Branch. In this context, the question of managing this special fund appears, i.e. the inventory, cataloging and preservation of the fund, the elaboration of a common Bibliography for all branches of “B. P. Hasdeu” Municipal Library, which would be permanently completed and therefore become everybody’s common good.

Résumé :
Abstract The system in the title has been subjected to a parametric, nonstationary (NS) linear v(t) = v0 + βt, and cyclic v(t) = v0 ± γ sin βt excitations. The NS linear responses settle on the initial, constant values for extended values of the excitation frequencies, thus they stabilize the stationary (ST) response. This is true for the initial conditions taken on the stationary curve, and for different ply-angles. For the initial conditions (I.C.) beyond the ST plots, the NS responses stay also near the initial conditions, but they have the wavy forms, which increase slightly for the lower values of the forcing frequencies. For the cyclic parametric excitations, the NS responses are cyclic contained within the ranges of the excitation amplitudes ±β and (finite) response amplitudes above the ST initial values, raising up and down within these limits. It appears that they cover the whole area within the above described constraints. The decisive effect of the cyclic NS inputs, i.e., almost instantaneous cyclic responses replacing the ST responses regardless of the I.C. and ST responses, is a bench mark of the cyclic NS. This behavior is distinctly different from the NS cyclic responses of the composite columns.

Abstract: Le Corbusier’s contacts with the world of cinematography spanned his entire career and cover a broad spectrum. They materialized in the conception and construction of screening rooms for cinema, the participation in projects and cinema-making, and the publication of sporadic features under the title "Esprit de vérité" (1933). This article covers Le Corbusier’s unique cinematographic thought standing apart from those of other distinguished architects of his generation and highlights the change he experienced between the film L’Architecture d’Aujourd'hui (1930) and the multimedia work Le Poème électronique (1958). It traces a path originating with the notion of cinema as a medium where images are at the service of architecture and never the other way around, and winding up with the use of soviet montage as a subjective message of the filmmaker who, in this case was also maker of the architecture. The paper emphasizes the need and challenges to synchronize multi time-domain and multi physical-phenomena data acquisition systems. On the way from a raw data sensor system to an independent decision-making edge device, there are still some challenges to be solved along the way. Identifying and combining technologies from foreign domains is the focus of the journey. Open and standardized communication protocols like OPC UA or MQTT are already wellestablished technologies with a high level of security. These communication protocols allow users to discover and receive structured data from compatible sensors and edge devices in the network. Moving the data processing and decision-making further to edge leads to reduced data transfer volume, lower latencies and improved privacy, security, and cost-effectiveness. This requires an extensible platform to embed custom feature extraction algorithms and to deploy trained machine learning models. ONNX, the open standard for machine learning interoperability, is a further puzzle piece on this journey. The paper shows the status of work, ongoing developments in the open standard community like OpenAE and platform strategies for advanced analytics and AI.

Lindberg Bjerke, Steinar, Jens P. Tronskar, Steven Chong et Asle Venås. « Background and New Revision of DNVGL-RP-F108 ». Dans ASME 2018 37th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2018-78652.

Résumé :
DNV-RP-F108 [1] was first issued in 2006. The Recommended Practice was developed to provide guidance on testing and analyses for fracture control of pipeline girth welds subjected to cyclic plastic deformation, e.g. during installation by the reeling method, but also for other situations where pipelines may be subjected to large plastic strains. The Recommended Practice was based upon a Project Guideline developed within the Joint Industry Project “Fracture Control for Installation Methods Introducing Cyclic Plastic Strain - Development of Guidelines for Reeling of Pipelines”. The new revision is based on the extensive experience and knowledge gained over the years use of the previous versions, as well as new knowledge from recent R&D projects. The main content of Appendix A of DNV-OS-F101 (now DNVGL-ST-F101) [2] have been transferred to DNVGL-RP-F108. Only the requirements relative to ECA and testing have been retained in DNVGL-ST-F101 [2]. The new revision has got a new number and new title, i.e. DNVGL-RP-F108, “Assessment of Flaws in Pipeline and Riser Girth Welds”. This paper lists the fundamental changes made in the new RP from the old Appendix A of the previous DNV-OS-F101 and discusses some of the changes, although within this paper it is not possible to cover all changes. The focus is on clarification of use of S-N versus the fracture mechanics approach for fatigue life computation, classification of fatigue sensitive welds, calculations of more accurate crack driving force by re-introduction of the plate solution, for which a new Lr,max (plastic collapse) calculation and a modified way to account for residual stresses have been specified. The RP presents new assessment procedures pertaining to use of finite element analyses for fracture mechanics assessments. A unique feature of the new RP is the guidance on sour service testing and assessments included in the Appendix C of the document to support pipeline/riser ECAs to develop flaw acceptance criteria for NDT.

Résumé :
The title of this paper covers two questions: a) Which items have to be considered for ‘Standardized Calculation’? b) Which ‘requirements’ have to be focused in future? The contribution starts with the fundamental approach of bolted joint mechanics, looks to the focus of present design standards and lists the main risks for bolted joints today. From this the future requirements are derived. Examples are given to selected aspects. Conclusions are drawn to overcome the future challenges for bolted joint design with five needs.

Schield, Milo. « Teaching the social construction of statistics ». Dans Statistics Education and Outreach. International Association for Statistical Education, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.52041/srap.11604.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Best (2001) asserts that “all statistics are socially constructed.” This paper investigates three questions. (1) Is Best’s thesis true? (2) If so, should this fact be taught in introductory statistics courses? (3) If so, what general principles involving the social construction of statistics can be taught that don’t rely on detailed knowledge of a particular subject? Isaacson (2011) notes that the social construction of statistics is readily presented by asking students “Where do statistics come from?” Results of a small survey show that statistical educators are seriously divided on whether this topic should be taught. Examples of questions and principles used in teaching Statistical Literacy at Augsburg College are presented. This paper argues that the Isaacson question, “Where do statistics come from?” is fundamental to statistical education and should be at the center of any course titled “statistical literacy”. If there isn’t time to teach this material in introductory statistics courses, then statistical educators should support offering a separate statistical literacy course in order to cover this important topic.

Résumé :
Relevant geospatial data layers are required for developing next generation ecological response models for specific reaches of 5 rivers in Central Texas: Colorado, Concho, San Saba, Llano, and Pedernales Rivers. Therefore, a collaborative effort between Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Texas State University, and Texas A&M University was undertaken to acquire and curate a collection of biological and physical datasets to be utilized as inputs for next generation ecological response models at various spatial scales (watershed, river buffer, and point). The objective was to aggregate and process GIS and remote sensing data layers using advanced geospatial analytics to generate relevant metrics (e.g., landcover, elevation, soil erodibility). Next, subsets of the priority datasets were extracted based on two spatial units of interest (local buffer and watershed). The priorities include (1) Percent land use and land cover information from National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) land use/land cover class types (forest, cultivated land, open water, etc.) and soil composition (%); LU change, (2) Geomorphology for each sampling point, (3) Physiographic information on each sampling point, and (4) Linear stream distance between sampling points (5 Secondary) Distance/network analyses. This work was funded through ERDC’s Next Generation Ecological Modeling Program under the work unit titled, “Remote Sensing and statistical support for multi-scale field-based data collection”.
