Résumé :
The monograph is dedicated to the supercontinent Pananthropea, which was created by the efforts of people, and therefore is named in his honor. It consists of all purely geographical continents, as well as all land areas, representing a single organism that functions exactly as a whole, but at the same time divided by nature itself. The relevance of this approach is shown as follows, as described in the three chapters of the text. First, it demonstrates the physical connectivity of all regions of our planet with each other, which is expressed in a change in the logic of the topology, today planted and controlled by man. Secondly, the presence of this huge and unbroken array is evidenced by the biological component of the world economy, which we have also transformed to suit our needs, thereby redrawing the natural course of affairs in this area and turning it into a global one. Third, the same is true of the cultural domain of our life, which at some point became universal, which again was achieved for the sake of our goals and interests, as a result of which we are all now members of a single interconnected association. It is of interest to both specialists and a wide audience and will be useful for us to understand both ourselves and the reality that we have constructed.

Oakes, Lisa M., et David H. Rakison. Developmental Cascades. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195391893.001.0001.

Résumé :
Children take their first steps, produce their first words, and become able to solve many new problems seemingly overnight. Yet, each change reflects many other previous developments that occurred in the whole child across a range of domains, and each change, in turn, will provide opportunities for future development. This book proposes that all change can be explained in terms of developmental cascades such that events that occur at one point in development set the stage, or cause a ripple effect, for the emergence or development of different abilities, functions, or behaviors at another point in time. The authors argue that these developmental cascades are influenced by different kinds of constraints that do not have a single foundation: They may originate from the structure of the child’s nervous system and body, the physical or social environment, or knowledge and experience. These constraints occur at multiple levels of processing and change over time, and both contribute to developmental cascades and are the product of them. The book presents an overview of this developmental cascade perspective as a general framework for understanding change throughout the lifespan, although it is applied primarily to cognitive development in infancy. The book also addresses how a cascade approach obviates the dichotomy between domain-general and domain-specific mechanisms. The framework is applied in detail to three domains within infant cognitive development—namely, looking behavior, object representations, and concepts for animacy—as well as two domains unrelated to infant cognition (gender and attachment).

Résumé :
A recurrent figure throughout this book, Oscar Wilde both exemplified and generated a connection between queerness and modernism that was enacted in and through performance. In this brief epilogue, Wilde’s contention that “what is termed Sin is an essential element of progress” serves to encapsulate how, as illustrated in the preceding chapters, queer modernist performance was a subversive yet insufficiently recognized aspect of modernism. Queer modernist performance thus clarifies that modernism, as Susan Stanford Friedman has argued, was a domain within modernity that effected change while at the same time intersecting with other domains of change, in this instance gender and sexuality.

Résumé :
This case study of precarious employment in public hospitals shows that the adoption of neoliberal practices was a gradual process whose roots can be traced to earlier decades. Innovative and even revolutionary changes in civil service hiring practices emerged in the early 1960s, gathering momentum in the subsequent decade. In this domain, at least, neoliberal practices preceded the neoliberal ideological shift, and helped pave the way for the latter’s assimilation. At the same time, being conferred with significance and legitimacy assisted the further growth of precarity in the public sector. This dialectic of ideas and organizational practices constituted an important mechanism entrenching neoliberal modes of employment within the state.

Résumé :
This chapter reviews the relationship between sociolinguistic theory and the empirical domain of World Englishes. Despite considerable potential for mutual exchange, sociolinguistic theory has not been the primary analytic model for World Englishes. Using examples from multilingual cultures around the world, the chapter illustrates how postcolonial English contexts can test the validity of classic tenets of sociolinguistic theory. These include principles pertaining to class, gender, style, age, network, peer effects, apparent time, and identity, all of which were initially based on observations in monolingual urban Western contexts. The discussion then turns to the importance of such testable theoretical claims for deeper understandings of the social dynamics of variation and change in World Englishes.

Knight, Andrew P. Innovations in unobtrusive methods. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198796978.003.0004.

Résumé :
Andrew P. Knight explores developments in unobtrusive research methods using unconventional sources of data from computer-based systems and tools. These generate novel measures of behaviour based on the digital trace data that we all generate, online access to public and personal archives, wearable sensors, and the automatic coding of text, and audio and video recordings. Smartphones and wristbands are just two of the growing range of connected devices that are capable of capturing and sharing multimedia information in real-time. Devices such as these offer new ways in which researchers can gather data at low cost, avoiding reactance effects, allowing the study of how phenomena change over time, and expanding the scale of research, given the wide dissemination of the technology. Before adopting these methods, researchers need to consider whether they have the expertise, and the ethical issues raised by using information (which may be in the public domain) without informed consent.

Résumé :
Although conventional periodization informs The Order of Things, Foucault’s focus was the way we think and when that changes. His “ruptures” are best grasped by considering the efforts of transitional figures to make sense of what is happening around them. If there is a crucial moment in Foucault’s story, it is the transition from the classical age to the modern age. At that time the “quasi-transcendental domains” of life, labor, and language turned into the historical and analytic “positivities” of biology, economy, and philology. While Foucault’s book is an indispensable template for tracing major alterations in ways of thinking, it is incomplete. Foucault disregarded the transition from the modern age to the modernist age in the decades around 1900, and he overlooked law as a fourth domain. Slighting the links between conditions of thought and conditions of rule, Foucault failed to see modernity’s ever-present, ever-changing “mightie frame.”

Résumé :
Abstract Over the past decade, numerous states have declared cyberspace as a new domain of warfare, sought to develop a military cyber strategy and establish a cyber command. These developments have led to much policy talk and concern about the future of warfare as well as the digital vulnerability of society. No Shortcuts provides a level-headed view of where we are in the militarization of cyberspace. In this book, Max Smeets bridges the divide between technology and policy to assess the necessary building blocks for states to develop a military cyber capacity. Smeets argues that for many states, the barriers to entry into conflict in cyberspace are currently too high. Accompanied by a wide range of empirical examples, Smeets shows why governments abilities to develop military cyber capabilities might change over time and explains the limits of capability transfer by states and private actors.

Résumé :
This microhistory reconstructs and analyses a protracted legal dispute over a small parcel of land called Warrens Court in Nibley, Gloucestershire, which was contested between successive generations of two families from the mid-sixteenth century to the early eighteenth century. Employing a rich cache of archival material, it traces legal contestation over time, and through a range of different courts, as well as in Parliament and the public domain, and it contends that a microhistorical approach makes it possible to shed valuable light upon the legal and political culture of early modern England, not least by comprehending how certain disputes became protracted and increasingly bitter, and why they might fascinate contemporaries. This involves recognising the dynamic of litigation, in terms of how disputes changed over time, and how those involved in myriad lawsuits found legal reasons for prolonging contestation. It also involves exploring litigants’ strategies and practices, as well as competing claims about the way in which adversaries behaved, and incompatible expectations of the legal system. Finally, it involves teasing out the structural issues in play, in terms of the social, cultural and ideological identities of successive generations. Ultimately, this dispute is employed to address important historiographical debates surrounding the nature of civil litigation in early modern England, and to provide new ways of appreciating the nature, severity, and visibility of political and religious conflict in the decades before and after the English Revolution.

Résumé :
This book explores the process by which people decide to conserve or convert natural resources. Building on a seminal study by Harold Hotelling that connects conservation to expected changes in the value of resources, the authors develop the general principles involved in conservation science. The focus of the book is the resources of the natural environment. This includes both directly exploited resources such as agricultural soils, minerals, forests, and fish stocks, and biodiversity—the wild species and natural ecosystems put at risk when people choose to convert natural habitat, or to discharge waste products to water, land, or air. The theory of conservation shows how much or how little to extract from the environment, and how much to leave intact. It also shows how conservation decisions are influenced by the existence of market failures—the external impacts of market decisions on ecosystems, and the public good nature of many ecosystem services. It shows how conservation connects to expected changes in the relative importance or value of natural resources, and what is needed to uncover that value. It shows how context matters. Decisions about the conservation of natural resources are influenced by property rights—whether land is private property or in the public domain; by environmental policies, laws, and regulations within countries; and by environmental agreements between countries. Finally, this book shows how conservation differs within and beyond protected areas, how it connects to the system of environmental governance, and how governance structures have evolved over time.

Résumé :
Archaeologists investigating sites of craft and industrial enterprise often puzzle over a domain of bewildering ruins. Locations of remarkable energy, tumult, and creativity now stand silent. This book provides an overview of the archaeology of American craft and industrial enterprises, outlines developments in theories, research questions, and interpretative frameworks, and presents case studies from a wide range of subjects. Research focused on industrial enterprises traverses a spectrum of perspectives. Some limit their efforts to recording, mapping, and studying the mechanics of a site. Others examine comparative questions of changes of technologies over time and space. Many analysts look away from the buildings and equipment of the workplace and focus instead on the workers, their families, residences, lifeways, and health experiences. With many sites presenting standing ruins, historians and archaeologists often encounter local stakeholder groups who wish to promote heritage themes and tourism potentials. All of these perspectives can be pursued with significant advances in research and curation methods. Investigations often range from microscopic analysis of product constituents to large-scale, three-dimensional recording of locations and features with high-resolution laser technologies. Past debates questioned whether primary emphasis should be on heritage recording or on archaeological research questions. More recent trends focus on collaborations across interest groups.
