Texte intégralThe aim of this dissertation is to analyse Yeats's long narrative poem The Wanderings of Oisin(1889) and to study how the Anglo-Irish poet dealt with the “Irish matter” represented by the dialogue between St. Patrick and Oisin. This research has been divided into two distinct parts: a first one on theoretical, historical and cultural examination and a second part on the text analysis. The first chapter introduces the reader to the chronological events that have highlighted both Yeats's life and the intellectual background present in Ireland at the end of XIX century. The second and third chapter aim to examine the cultural movements and the existing dispute over Oisin's character. The second part of this work focuses on the textual analysis of The Wanderings of Oisin. In the first section the structure is investigated through methodological approaches such as segmentation, semiotics and a textual comparison between the original manuscript and the first printed version. The second section offers a comprehensive study of the Irish cultural elements that have emerged during the textual analysis.

This thesis mainly deals with two issues, one is how symbols are objective correlatives for the development of the early Yeats. The other is how Yeats’s symbolism in A Vision brings out the collective unconscious and makes life corresponding to the Great Wheel. The archetypal passage paves the way for Yeats’s early individuation as a youth and his role as Anglo-Irish poet. In The Wanderings of Oisin and The Shadowy Waters, the young Yeats projects his enthusiasm for the quest for Platonic love and heroism. Identifying himself as an Anglo-Irish poet, Yeats devotes himself in the quest for Ideal Beauty in the vacillation between the real and the imaginative and subsequently realizes the Ideal beauty is located in the fulcrum between mortal life and death. This is the origin of his concept of immortality. Believing in the cultural function of the “old myths and their modern advocates,” Yeats tried to inspire his countrymen to become aware of and be delighted in beautiful things inherited from the past. Endowed with beauty and love, the Irish are able to quest for identity and independence through the archetypal passage. In Chapter One, I will present the Jungian theories about archetype, the collective unconscious, and the individuation. The formation reinforces my discussion on the early Yeats’s individuation and supports my interpretation of the archetypal passage leading from his early symbolism to his role in the Irish Renaissance. Then, I use Joseph Campbell’s interpretation of the Orphic journey to discover Oisian and Forgael are initiates on an Orphic journey to the Otherworld. In Chapter Two, I evaluate Yeats as an Anglo Irish poet in his making of The Wanderings of Oisin and The Shadowy Waters. In Chapter Three, applying the Jungian archetypal methods more specifically, I analyze how the symbols enable Yeats’s individuation. In Chapter Four, I emphasize how the Jungian collective unconscious is related to Yeats’s occultism in A Vision and how his poetic dreams enable the manifestation of the collective unconscious. Then, I discuss how Yeats as an artist is aware of the social and cultural responsibility in his use of the collective unconscious, which makes his poetic art take on a compensatory role. Chapter Five is my conclusion of this thesis: through the archetypal passage, the signification of the symbols helps Yeats not only attain an expression of ideal beauty in the poetic world, but also contributes to his individuation. Meanwhile, this passage also leads to Yeats’s social awareness of Irish identity and helps to explain his contribution to the cultural evocation of the Irish Renaissance.
