This thesis seeks to study about African slave in Rio social context in the Second Empire (1840-1889), and during the first decade of the Old Republic. This chronology seeks to think the African descendant through three specific social moments: firstly, when slave was the workforce that moved the Brazilian agricultural export system. Furthermore, he was considered an object by master, who punished it daily. In this way, slave, who experienced that context, was part of the first social moment, which, according to this thesis, ended in 1888, when there was Abolition. Secondly, since the slaves were freed by imperial state, became Africans solely. In fact, these were freed from their shackles and whip. However, they continued under the auspices of the imperial system until the advent of the Republic Proclamation in 1889. Free slaves experienced this second social moment, which was called the interregnum by this thesis. Finally, the former slave, now experiencing the condition of African descendant emancipated, was not inserted inside modern class society that was structured after the Proclamation in 1889. This individual was left alone. Indeed, the Old Republic not caught him, who continued being a "captive" person in a society where the slavery essence remained in terms of mentality of the population. African descendant who were part in context formed the third social moment. With regard to the life of the captive African, the freed African, and the African abandoned in the imperial society and Republican of Rio de Janeiro, it is believed that Literature contributes to understanding of social types, given that the hermeneutic understanding of Ricoeur claims that fiction can reveal essential aspects of reality. This sociological perspective, rooted in literature, confirms that the writings that were produced in some time ago can be important memory sources for understanding the social relations that were supported by past context. In this sense, it is believed that the realist literature in Machado de Assis, one of the canons of national literature, is able to reveal significant insights about the social context of imperial and republican Brazil. The realist literature in Machado de Assis, comprising novels, chronic, tales, shows us the social, political, cultural contexts in nineteenth-century imperial Brazil and during the first republican decade. In this sense, it is observed that literature can support the understanding about social life in its various aspects, yesterday and contemporarily. Taking this understanding into account, this thesis seeks to analyze the representation of social types represented through captive, freed, and abandoned Africans, which are part in realistic writes by Machado de Assis (1881 -1908).

Throughout the twentieth century, black Brazilians sought to build strategies not only to better integrate into the current political and economic structure, but also to overturn the negative social representations with which they were identified throughout the country’s history, as much as a function of their slave past as for their racial origins. Thus, we seek to analyze the path taken by São Paulo’s black press – newspapers and magazines written by and for black people and dedicated exclusively to issues involving the interests of that population – in the period between 1916 and 1978. Given the established timeframe and selected publications, we follow different ways in which Africa was represented and (re)signified by discourses formulated by the writers of this alternative press in order to enable it – or not – to construct an African-Brazilian identity. The central idea is to demonstrate that the images formulated and memories mobilised to refer that continent were not limited to mere resistance to or denial of derogatory images that historically circulated in the country; on the contrary, references to Africa were subject to constant negotiations made by those men to construct Brazilian nationality through the articulation of political activism with the local intellectual landscape, as well as within formation that came from black international movements and from the political situation of African countries themselves.

Texte intégralThe paper aims to study and understand the biography and life context of Gustavus Vassa (who also called himself Olaudah Equiano) (1750-1797), an African who worked as a sailor in the vessels of the Atlantic. Our study is based on his autobiography, written and edited in 1789. Our main objectives in this work were to verify the validity of the text as a historical source, analyze the life of this subject as a sailor during the period of his life and discuss his memory in relation to the African continent. By analyzing the text, we also seek to reconstruct aspects of the daily life of sailors that worked in the Atlantic during the 18th century and analyze the way the author presents the memory of his native community, the Igbo who currently reside in the Republic of Nigeria in West Africa. The work was based on the autobiography of this man, who called himself Olaudah Equiano, the African, but had a western forename, Gustavos Vassa. This sailor‟s work has been reedited since its first edition in 1789 and today is part of the canon of known texts of african-american literature. There are several studies connected to other research areas, such as Literature, that use this account to study the daily life of slaves and former slaves in the period in question. We tried to put to the test Gustavus Vassa‟s text as a historical source about the lives of sailors, as well as his past in Africa. Based on this African man‟s text, we sought to reconstruct a bit of the everyday life of sailors who worked in the Atlantic during the eighteenth century. In addition, we also observed that many of these sailors were African or African-Americans who commited to this activity in order to ascend socially or even seeking a better life than other slaves in the plantations of the New World.

Texte intégralNegro culture is studied over two different periods in two distinct locations, firstly in Africa and then in Brazil. In Africa, the main period considered is between the XII and XVI centuries. We synthesized several topics such as geography, history, politics, economy and social organization pertaining to Bantu Africa and West Africa. This context is used to describe daily life, human ideology and significant aspects of magic and religion. Using a dynamic and an interpretative perspective, we analyzed life and death as a cultural process. Also emphasized are the daily rituals and other customs marking important events in individual and communal life, from both a spiritual and a material dimension. Our interpretation of cultures supports our presupposition of unity though diversity and diversity through unity In Brazil, we focused on the transferred religion and its evolution. In a summarized fashion, we characterize the European scenario in between the XVI and XIX centuries. This helps us put into context the slave trade and the ideology of the colonizers during this time. xiii Supported by the concept of reinterpretation, we address the religion of these Africans in their new environment, and search for the beginnings and evolution of a specific system of religion called Candomblé. In spite of a dichotomy between the Nàgó and Bantu rites, we characterize Candomblé as a unified manifestation of Negro culture, and as a form of opposition to the White religion. We also reveal the contradiction experienced by the Candomblé adepts, who were inserted into Western ideology yet continue to practice rites sustained by a traditional African vision of the world. In our interpretative anthropology approach, we utilized the rudiments of relativity theory, and also strived to insert our work within the perspective of esthetic anthropology.
