Résumé :
Katona József Theatre closed its 40th season on June 16, 2023. Director Gábor Máté said that “the entire staff at the Katona József Theatre can be proud that, despite the ongoing economic difficulties, the 40th season was completed in a manner worthy of the institution’s roots.” During the anniversary celebrations, I watched the performances and was haunted by the thought of taking a look at the Katona (as the people of Budapest call it) from the outside of its cultural framework and creative idiom. For forty years, the Katona has provided a most intensely stimulating discourse on artistic creation in Hungarian, with a specific theatrical idiom and a continuous self-reflective redefinition of its own status. In search of such ideas as “roots” and “worthy manner”, in this paper I juxtapose the 1982 and 2022 seasons to evaluate this complexity as it can be understood and perceived from the perspective of European urban theatre cultures.

Résumé :
The Hungarian travelling theatre company named Tanyaszínház (Grange Theater) was founded in 1978 in Yugoslavia, and it has not stopped since. In their performances, one can observe how successive political systems generated social issues that also affected minorities. These issues are not presented as historical facts but rather as everyday realities on stage. Their productions, which are given in villages and small towns, serve as prisms that directly reflect social experiences back to the community. From the history of the company’s performances, one can discern the infinitely complex narratives of self-definition for the Hungarian minority in Vojvodina (North Serbia), spanning from the late 1970s to the present day. Over the last four and a half decades, they have not only thematized the process of self-identification of the Hungarian community in the province but have also participated in it.

Résumé :
Marcel Breuer (1902–1981) is one of the most important architects and designers of the second generation of Modernism. Yet today, more than 35 years after his death, Breuer is most often remembered for his furniture designs, while his architectural works have largely disappeared from disciplinary discourse. Breuer may be said to have stood between the first generation of modernists, such as Mies van der Rohe, whose accomplishments he matched, and the second generation of modernists such as Louis Kahn, who were his true contemporaries. Yet Breuer could be said not to belong either to the first or second generation, never embracing what he characterized as the dogmatic modernism of the glass curtain wall, but also rejecting the idea that modern architecture was a monolithic conception. Having begun his career with his 1934 lecture critiquing modernism from the inside, Breuer consistently rejected the critiques of modernism coming from the outside during the last 25 years of his career, when modernism was declared to be dead, and practitioners such as Breuer were labeled “late modernists.” Standing between the first and the last moderns, Breuer may be understood as the last of the first moderns and the first of the last moderns.

Résumé :
The purpose of the study: This study aims to identify the following factors that affect the physical inactivity of the students in Saint Joseph College aged 12- 16 years old. It aims to understand the impact of this crisis and how to address this pressing issue. Materials and methods: A descriptive- survey research design was utilized to document the respondents' behavior, demographics, and experiences correlated to the questions provided. The questionnaire includes 15-item questions that seek to gather information on their basic profile, current experiences, and behavior towards physical activities. Results: The study discovers that teenagers aged 12-16 years old are inactive in physical activities and sports due to some reasons like the exposure of too much time on gadgets, whether the activity provides a fun and offers socialization, lack of motivation, occupied schedules for other matters, the COVID-19 pandemic, costly sports equipment on the sports of their interest, the unavailability of playing area, and lastly health concerns. Conclusions: Therefore, physical inactivity only alleviates certain issues, physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially. Physical inactivity is the result of demotivated individuals, physical illiteracy, prolonged screen-time, and health issues.

Résumé :
It was after the Second World War and the nationalisations that autonomous theatres for children and youth and theatre performances targeting this age group were first established in Hungary. In my study, I will present the institutional history of children’s and youth theatres in the period 1949–1989/1992 and the children’s and youth theatre-makers who were amateur theatre-makers alongside the institutionalised theatres. I will give an insight into the productions that were produced during this period, the problems faced by the children’s and youth theatre community, and the contradictions that creators had to face during the period of state socialism. I will look at decisions, decrees, and laws on the medium of children’s and youth theatre productions from 1949 to 1989/1992, in order to gain a better understanding of the cultural context in which amateur theatre groups produced performances in the context of children’s and youth theatre culture, alongside the institutionalised children’s and youth theatres.

Résumé :
Gábor Székely’s stagings of Örkény, Chekhov, Molière and Shakespeare in Szolnok during the 1970s overshadow his mise-en-scène of Gácsérfej (The Drake’s Head), whose significance is almost made imperceptible by the unfamiliarity of the play (and its author), and the complete absence of its stage history in Hungary. However, the 1973 performance of George Ciprian’s play illustrates the far-reaching boldness of the effort that “we want to create world theatre here in Szolnok”, which could be the motto of the Székely Era in this small Hungarian town. The essay outlines how The Drake’s Head developed into the essence of this ambition, and how free from orthodoxy Székely handled “committed political theatre”, even against the expectations of the authorities.

Résumé :
The volume offers a representative collection of Shakespeare festivals from the European continent in the form of individual case studies. The book makes the case for a “pan-European and post-English” Shakespeare by providing evaluative and interpretative accounts of both well-known and less-focused festivals in Eastern and Western Europe. The essays combine an external, objective eye with an internal perspective, in just the right balance. Shakespeare on European Festival Stages is a high-quality travel companion, providing a brand-new Shakespearean Grand Tour for all interested theatre scholars and theatre-goers.

Résumé :
In this study, I analyze the 2013 performance of Metanoia Artopédia, Ice Doctrines. Variations on Nazi Rhetoric in the context of the history of the Hungarian independent theater group. Using Judith Butler’s thoughts on hate speech and Gilles Deleuze’s minor/major use of language, I try to show that the shift to “major” forms and topics (the power of representation and the representation of power) from an Artaud-ian “minor” theatre does not mean a radical change in the group’s history, and the theater of “kings and princes” gets necessarily deconstructed on the stage of Metanoia. After 20 years of owning a minor perspective – the world of the “saint idiots” – the group takes the perpetrator’s point of view and stages the Lingua Tertii Imperii (the language of the Third Reich). Still, Ice Doctrines remains “minor” as it finds the “lines of escape” within representation.

Résumé :
Receptive venues in Hungary are the „stepchildren” of the theatre structure established in 1949, which has remained essentially unchanged since then. These spaces of the independent performing arts scene could be the breeding ground of artistic innovation, progression, and experimentation, if properly subsidized by the state. This has clearly not taken place over the last few decades: neither the ever-changing funding and legislative environment, nor the public and theatre professionals’ perception of the status of the receptive venues support an improvement in the situation. This study examines and compares the theatrical profiles of two emblematic performing arts centres on the Buda side of the Hungarian capital: the Szkéné Theatre on the second floor of the Budapest University of Technology and the MU Theatre, which grew out of the former Lágymányosi Community Centre.

Résumé :
Tick-borne encephalitis virus is the cause of much morbidity and sometimes a fatal infection. A vaccine based on formaldehyde inactivated virus is currently the only available way of preventing disease. This vaccine gives a high rate of seroconversion but there are reports of vaccination breakthrough, even in people who have demonstrated a neutralizing antibody response. The T cell response to inactivated TBE vaccine is largely unknown, but could be of importance for the effect of the vaccine. This study characterizes aspects of the T cell response by investigating the expression of two transcription factors, T-bet and GATA-3 with RT-PCR. T-bet is expressed in CD4+ T cells of the Th1 type, while GATA-3 is expressed in CD4+ T cells of the Th2 type. Our data show that vaccination with inactivated TBE vaccine leads to increase in expression of the T-bet gene when cells of vaccinated subjects are cultured with TBE virus. In contrast, the expression of GATA-3 remains unaffected by vaccination. Thus, this study suggests that the inactivated TBE vaccine leads to a Th1-like immune response in humans.

Résumé :
What follows is an investigation of unusual media behaviour. The 2003 Iraq War precipitated a series of demonstrations of unprecedented scale in a cause that often had majority support and challenged the authority of the government. The media’s well documented tendency to marginalise or ignore protest was at least partly suspended as newspapers cleared their front pages to report on demonstrations and the BBC sent senior journalists to interview marchers. For once, protesters were making the news. My research has revealed a very different pattern of reportage to that anticipated by the widely used ‘protest paradigm’ that predicts the marginalisation and even criminalisation of protest. Although the record shows great unevenness across different media outlets, the coverage of some of the anti-Iraq War protests appears more comprehensive, even-handed and at times sympathetic, than any equivalent example in the literature. The central task was to investigate the nature of the divergence and find ways of explaining it. In the process, this exceptional moment could be used to probe the media’s role in modern democracy and its attitudes to dissent at times of mass mobilisation and social stress. A combined textual and quantitative analysis of my research raised some interesting conclusions. Though important, structural or technological developments cannot explain the changes to the way protest was handled, as some of the literature argues. The evidence suggests that a contingent complex of social, ideological and political factors created a perfect storm that scrambled normal lines of communication. Interviews with participants and research into the context of the protests allowed me to fill out these suggestions and draw out more definite conclusions. At the same time, the analysis provided a test of theoretical models of media function, including versions of the ‘propaganda model’, broadly post-structuralist approaches, and more recent work suggesting a greater openness to dissent. Analysis of various theoretical approaches suggests, however, the importance of a model that can combine emphasis on the hegemonic role of the media, with sensitivity to contradictions that emerge between the moments of ‘maintaining consent’.

Résumé :
After the weakening of Turkish-Armenian relations and intensive American missionary activities, Armenians began to leave their homelands for educational, economic and political reasons. Emigration to the United States intensified in particular in response to the 1915 Techir (Relocation and Resettlement) Law. After achieving political rights in the United States, Armenian immigrants formed groups that began trying to influence U.S. government policy, working to win recognition of the alleged Armenian Genocide, financial assistance for Armenia, and other policies favorable to Armenia. The process that began resolution the alleged Armenia Genocide was removed from the historical dimension and moved to the political dimension and an international policy instrument was created. In the United States, the Armenian Diaspora strives to influence government policy systematically through diaspora organizations that carefully follow the international scene and advocate for United States foreign policies in favor of Armenia. In this study, the ultimate aims of the Armenia Diaspora over American politics and policy-making, and the activities of the Armenian Lobby will be examined.

Title: The Physiology of Literature: A.A. Ukhtomskii and The Principle of The Dominant Russian physiologist Aleksei Alekseevich Ukhtomskii played exceptional role in the development of Russian humanities in general and Russian literary studies in particular; of special interest is his significant influence on the early works of Mikhail Bakhtin. He discovered and introduced into the scientific circulation the dominant principle that has become a point of departure in developing different important concepts such as dominant, chronotope, dialogue and others. This thesis, in a way, is a genealogical recounting of early 20th century Russian literary theory in light of its associations with the work of Ukhtomskii and a demonstration how his ideas can be used in further literary studies.

Résumé :
Sub-endocardial fibres line the inner surface of both ventricles and are responsible for longitudinal oscillations of the mitral annulus, such oscillations may be measured using tissue Doppler echocardiography (IDE). During systole the annulus descends and during early diastole (ETDE) and atrial systole (ATDE) itascends. This thesis examined whether changes in the velocity of the annulus ineach of these phases of oscillation, measured using tissue Dopplerechocardiography (TDE), could determine the nature of increases in left ventricular size (pathological or physiological). Study one examined differences at rest in longitudinal velocities between individuals with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), hypertension (HT), weightlifters, runners and controls, (n = 15 all groups) and all groups were aged between 20 - 36 years. The results demonstrated that both pathological groups had systolic and ETDE velocities significantly lower than groups with physiological hypertrophy (weightlifters or runners) or controls p < 0.05. AIDE however was not significantly different between groups. Additionally runners also demonstrated a significantly higher ETDE than either weightlifters or controls (p < 0.05). Binomial logistic regression identified longitudinal systolic velocity < 9 cm s" 1 and ETDE velocity < 11 cm s" 1 as the best combination of variables to predict pathological increases in heart size. Study two examined older subjects in order to determine whether the criteria set out in study one were applicable to senior athletes. The subject groups were the same as in study one however all subjects were aged between 36-55. In this case systolic annular velocity was significantly lower in groups with pathological LVH but ETDE < 9 cm s" 1 was a better differentiator. Binomial logistic regression identified ETDE < 9 cm s" 1 and a mitral E / A ratio < 1 as the best combination of variables to predict pathological LVH. Study three examined the age related changes in long axis function using the pooled data from studies one and two. This demonstrated that in the pathological LVH groups only ETDE / ATDE ratio was significantly correlated with age (r = - 0.5 p < 0.05) suggesting that there appears to be no summation of the effects of pathology and age on mitral annular velocities. The control groups demonstrated a significant age related reduction in all long axis variables (systolic velocity r = - 0.7 p < 0.05; ETDE r = - 0.6 p < 0.01; ATDE r = 0.5 p < 0.05; ETD E / ATDE r = - 0.5 p< 0.01). Weightlifters however did not demonstrate an age related decline in either systolic or diastolic annular velocities. Runners had no age related decline in systolic annular velocities, and whilst they had an age dependent fall in ETDE ( r = - 0.62 p < 0.05) the older runners ETDE were still significantly faster (p < 0.05) than that seen in control subjects. Study four investigated relationship between mitral annular velocity and VOiruK in runners, weightlifters and controls. These results demonstrated peak exercise E TDE strongly correlated to VO^PEAK (r = 0.8 p < 0.01). ConclusionsTaken together these data suggest that longitudinal velocities of the mitral annulus may be useful in determining the nature of increases in heart size, in addition the increased performance of endurance - trained athletes is due in part to functional changes of the long axis.

Résumé :
The use of the wavelength ratio as a value for the ratio of the total extinction coefficients at the Raman and Rayleigh wavelengths:1 has been recently used in the Rayleigh LIDAR equation to determine temperatures or ozone concentrations in the stratosphere. The wavelength dependence of the total scattering coefficient could also be useful for the inversion of LIDAR data to get the particle distribution.2 This work examines the dependence of the exponent c, referred to as the Power for the Total Extinction Coefficient Ratio (PTECR), on the index of refraction of the medium, the modal radius of the particle distribution, and the width or shape of the particle distribution. These parameters are expected to be significantly different from the normal atmospheric parameters during volcanic conditions. A Mie code, developed by Dave3 and modified for use on a PC, served to theoretically examine this dependence.

Résumé :
Increasing absorption optical and optoelectronic bistability in hybrid thermooptical Si devices (Fig. 1) are studied at 1.06 μm both theoretically and experimentally. The optical nonlinearity of such SEED devices is largely enhanced by the optoelectronically generated electrical power [1,2] and it is shown that the characteristics can easily be controlled by the applied voltage. Additionally, it is found that the external resistance R adds a further nonlinearity. As an important result, two hysteresis cycles can now occur in succeeding regions of the input power (Fig. 2). If R is replaced by a conventional photodetector or a second SEED element, interesting logic operations between two independent optical signals are possible. Au doped samples reveal that the bistability depends on the orientation of the electric field. Since Au traps control also the absorption we conclude finally that the device characteristics can largely be engineered.
