LIANG, WENDONG. « Petrology and multimineral fingerprinting of modern sand derived from the Himalayan orogen ». Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/271022.
Texte intégralSediments and sedimentary rocks can be considered as geological archives that faithfully reflect their provenance information if the bias introduced by physical and chemical processes during transport and deposition can be properly recognized and corrected for. The sediment provenance analysis both in modern and ancient settings is crucial to trace the sediment sources, reconstruct paleoclimate and paleoenvironment, and interpret the evolution of the Earth’s surface. Modern sediments, unaffected by diagenesis and eroded, tansported and deposited under climatic conditions that are fully known, can provide valuable information on the interactions among the different controlling factors that govern source-to-sink systems. Rivers draining the Himalayan orogen provide the good opportunity to trace the source fingerprinting that is documented in modern fluvial and eolian sand and how these signatures reflect the erosion patterns of the modern and paleo-river systems. A multidisciplinary approach based on petrography, minerology, geochemistry and geochronology is emphasized in this research, in order to obtain a comprehensive provenance information. Our research area focused on the modern sands from two river system: Yarlung River and Indus River. In the Yarlung River system, the Nian River was chosen to investigate the petrographic, mineralogical and chronological signature of sediments from Tethys Himalaya, Greater Himalaya, Kangmar gneiss dome and Transhimalayan ophiolitic suture. Different tectonic domains are characterized by distinct heavy mineral assemblages, e.g., the first-cycle sillimanite and garnet in Greater Himalaya, and clinopyroxene, olivine and enstatite in the forearc ophiolites. Sand carried by the Nian River and its major tributaries, mainly reflects Tethys Himalayan characteristics, consistent with the geochronological results. Erosion rates were also evaluated and circumscribed in the middle Yarlung River catchment. The average erosion rate in the Nianchu catchment is estimated at 0.07-0.10 mm/a, twice as that in the middle Yarlung and Lhasa River catchments, which is principally ascribed to the high erodibility of Tethys Himalayan strata. In the Indus River system, minerochemical analysis of amphibole, garnet, epidote and pyroxene grains, and geochronological analysis of detrital zircons, associated with analysis on petrography, bulk-sediment geochemistry and isotopic geochemistry, in aolian sand from Thal Desert and fluvial sand in selected tributaries draining one specific tectonic domain in the upper Indus catchment, were carried out to discriminate compositional signatures, decipher the provenance information, and trace the erosional evolution of the western Himalaya syntaxis. The compositional fingerprints of Thal Desert sand are characterized by litho-feldspatho-quartzose to quartzo-feldspatho-lithic detrital modes and very rich amphibole-dominated heavy-mineral assemblages. The high heavy mineral concentration, less negative εNd, abundant zircon ages at 40-100 Ma, and specific mineral varietal fingerprints, consistently reflect that the Kohistan arc has acted as the main sediment source. Karakorum appears to contribute less while Himalaya shows higher influence on the Thal Desert sands than modern river sands from the Indus. As a Quaternary repository of wind-reworked Indus River sand at the entry point in the Himalayan foreland basin, Thal Desert sands document higher erosion rates than today in the glaciated areas formed largely by batholites granitoids of the Asian active margin. The close compositional and chronological connection between the Thal Desert and the ancient Indus Delta and Fan deposits, shed new light on the reconstructing of paleodrainage and the understanding of relationship between climatic and tectonic forcing that controlled the erosional evolution of the western Himalayan-Karakorum orogen.

Texte intégralMembers of a religious community founded in the 15th century in the Thar desert, the Bishnoi number about 900 000 today, the majority of whom still live in the Rajasthan region. Originating from 29 precepts, several of which codify relationships to other living beings, animal and vegetal, their religious doctrine upholds a life ethic in accordance with these precepts, their ethnonym "Bishnoï" literally meaning twenty-nine, bish: 20, noï: 9. Today the Bishnoi see their values, representations and practices being questioned by a number of socio-economic and ecological factors. In addition to a look into the ruptures and continuities of the transmission of their doctrine and its 29 precepts, this thesis examines the relationships and interactions between the Bishnoi and the animals and trees in their environment, the demands resulting from them, as well as influences on both material and immaterial practices of the present-day community. Practices (along with their related dogmatic references) that have the effect of defining community members’ identity to themselves and to those of the outside world

Texte intégralHaigh, Charlotte V. « More Than Skin Deep| The Impact of Self-Esteem, Desire for Lighter Skin, and Gender on the Mental Health of University Students in Thailand ». Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10288674.
Texte intégralThe present study examined the impact of self-esteem, the desire for lighter skin, and gender on levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among university students in Thailand. The study included 761 students from two universities in a northeastern province of Thailand who participated voluntarily. Results indicated that although the desire for lighter skin is prevalent among Thai university students, this desire alone does not significantly impact levels of depression, anxiety, or stress. Self-esteem was a significant predictor of depression, anxiety, and stress. School year showed a significant positive correlation with depression, anxiety, and stress. Academic performance as measured by GPA showed a significant positive correlation with self-esteem and a significant negative correlation with depression. Mental health professionals are advised to explore ways to improve Thai university students’ self-esteem and to examine the influence of academic and graduation-related pressures in order to positively impact students’ overall mental health. Additional implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Most Companies are seeking for new business model and capitalize for creating new opportunity. Recently, popularity of Lean Startup Methodology in startup suggest to overcome it potential for creating new context. Therefore, this thesis identify how Thai dessert store apply Lean Startup in Taiwan market. Research has conduct literature review with simply draft of 8 factors and using factor loading analysis to create new factors. Consequently, Research also conducted qualitative and quantitative, including fieldwork interview and questionnaire in Feng Chia University to collected data and analyses logit model in SPSS for finding outcome of successful factor. The study of MVP indicates that there are factors are inconsistency or barrier toward a customer makes decision to buy. Nevertheless, study suggests to process of metrics has determines to customer has willing to buy products. Moreover, the result confirm what factors is crucial as types of metrics that matter differ to customer makes purchasing decision. Research result of innovating accounting is purely shown there are priority key factors care on develop process and being data-driven to fit market/product faster and being passion to growth in cross-culture. Consequently, result also support the key factor is needed for customer satisfaction.
Harding, Nancy H., Hugh Lee, Jackie M. Ford et M. Learmonth. « Leadership and charisma : A desire that cannot speak its name ? » 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/6006.
Texte intégralLeadership has proved impossible to define, despite decades of research and a huge number of publications. This article explores managers’ accounts of leadership, and shows that they find it difficult to talk about the topic, offering brief definitions but very little narrative. That which was said/sayable provides insights into what was unsaid/ unsayable. Queer theory facilitates exploration of that which is difficult to talk about, and applying it to the managers’ talk allows articulation of their lay theory of leadership. This is that leaders evoke a homoerotic desire in followers such that followers are seduced into achieving organizational goals. The leader’s body, however, is absent from the scene of seduction, so organizational heteronormativity remains unchallenged. The article concludes by arguing that queer and critical leadership theorists together could turn leadership into a reverse discourse and towards a politics of pleasure at work.
Verpaelst, Manuel. « Mouvements de masse par solifluxion et dynamique syngénétique du pergélisol du Haut-Arctique ». Thèse, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/18727.
Texte intégralThe high Arctic is characterized by many extreme climatic and geomorphologic phenomena. Very cold temperatures, low precipitation and sparse vegetation cover, permit a deep penetration of cold in the soil. The latter, combined with a great number of freeze-thaw cycles, give rise to different surface features which in turn affect permafrost evolution dynamics and induce a vertical and lateral variability of the ice content distributions in the soil. This thesis focusses on the influence of a stone-banked solifluction lobe on permafrost evolution dynamics on Ward Hunt Island, Nunvut (Canada). By using a cryostratigraphic approach, the objectives are first, to characterize the cryostratigraphy of a solifluction lobe and second, to propose an evolution model of permafrost in reaction to the downslope displacement of material by solifluction. The cryostratigraphic analysis revealed that the solifluction lobes formation lead to the development of a syngenetic layer of permafrost with an ice content that varied according to the morphology of the lobe, and to the burial and preservation of a pre-existing body of massive ice at the base of the slope. The vertical and lateral sequence of the cryofacies presents the displacement of the lobe and its impact on spatial and temporal variability of the permafrost, that being, the aspects of aggradation related to the accumulation of material at the surface as well as degradation due to the actual climatic warming.
