Résumé :

RésuméCet article présente une étude empirique relative aux dynamiques non-linéaires sur données à haute fréquence. Les séries de cotation utilisées sont celles du Dollar contre le Mark sur le marché londonien durant l'année 1994. Nous montrons que le caractère leptokurtique et asymétrique des distributions peut s'expliquer par la présence de non-linéarités dans la moyenne ou dans la variance conditionnelle des taux de rendement. Nous utilisons le test KPSS et le test du bispectre qui paraissent bien adaptés à nos séries. La composante non-linéaire de la variance conditionnelle est décrite par des processus IGARCH avec loi de Student sur les résidus. Nous estimons en outre des modèles bilinéaires qui révèlent la présence de composantes non-linéaires dans la moyenne conditionnelle.

Résumé :

La compréhension du mécanisme génétique responsable du contrôle des caractères agronomiques est très importante dans la mise en évidence des méthodes de sélection en amélioration végétale. Cette étude veut apprécier le niveau de variabilité et gain génétique au sein des génotypes des haricots biofortifiés à Butembo et Lukanga à l’Est de la République Démocratique du Congo. Une expérimentation a été réalisée sur 164 génotypes biofortifiés en Fe et Zn et cinq variétés locales (non-biofortifiés). Les données ont été prises sur le nombre de jours à la floraison, nombre de jours jusqu’à 75 et 90% de la maturité, nombre de gousses par pied et nombre de graines par gousse, le rendement en graines et le poids de 100 graines et soumises à l’analyse de la variance et au test de Tukey avant d’estimer les paramètres génétiques. La corrélation de Pearson et le clustering ont enfin été réalisés. Des différences significatives ont été observées entre le contraste qui oppose les génotypes biofortifiés aux variétés témoins localement cultivées au regard de tous les caractères étudiés à l’exception du nombre des gousses initiées par plant et le rendement. Les génotypes RW298, BF08-16-36A, BF08-1-77, RWV2359 et MV-14, avec un rendement supérieur à 2000 kg ha-1, ont été les plus prometteurs au regard du rendement. L’estimation des composantes de la variance a montré une héritabilité (sens large) modérée au regard du nombre de jours à la floraison et faible pour tous les autres paramètres. Aussi, le coefficient de variation génotypique a été modéré uniquement au regard du rendement et faible pour tous les autres caractères. Le gain génétique dans les générations courantes a été faible (<10%) pour tous les caractères étudiés impliquant une action non-additive des gènes dans le contrôle des caractères au sein des génotypes étudiés. Une corrélation positive significative a été observée entre le rendement et le nombre de gousses par plant et le nombre de graines par gousse. La construction du dendrogramme a permis de regrouper quatre clusters importants (Cluster 1 = 49 génotypes, Cluster 2 = 30 génotypes, Cluster 3 = 42 génotypes and Cluster 4 = 48 génotypes). Au regard des résultats observés, il est recommandé d’effectuer des sélections au sein du cluster 2 (couleur bleue du dendrogramme) regroupant les génotypes les plus prometteurs au regard du rendement ou d’exploiter l’hétérosis au sein des génotypes en étude.

The reinforcement of acrylic denture base remains problematic. Acrylic prosthesis fractures are commonly observed in prosthodontic practice and have not been reliably resolved. This study compared the resistance to masticatory force of acrylic bases of removable complete conventional prosthesis in 3D upper models. Forty acrylic base test specimens containing two types of reinforcement meshes (20 with glass fiber meshes (FIBER-FORCE®- Synca, Bio Composants MédicauxTM, Tullins, France), 20 with metal meshes (DENTAURUM®-Ispringen, Germany)), 20 with a conventional PMMA acrylic base (LUCITONE 199®-Dentsply Sirona, York, PA, USA), and 20 using a permanent soft reline material (MOLLOPLAST-B®-DETAX GmbH & Co. KG, Ettlingen, Germany) were tested—a total of 80 specimens. Half of the specimens were made for a low alveolar ridge and half for a high alveolar ridge. The data were analysed using one-way analysis of variance and Student’s t-test for independent test specimens. In the high-alveolar-ridge group, the prosthesis reinforced with the glass fiber mesh was the most resistant to fracture, while in the low-alveolar-ridge group, the non-reinforced prosthesis showed the highest resistance masticatory force. Prostheses with the permanent soft reline material showed the lowest resistance to fracture in both high and low-alveolar-ridge groups. The results show that the selection of the right reinforcement material for each clinical case, based on the height of the alveolar ridge, may help to prevent prosthesis fractures.

Résumé :

The binomial nomenclature method of classification (Taxonomy) of organisms developed by Linnaeus entails arranging animals and plants into natural, related groups based on structure, embryology, or biochemistry into kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. This study aimed at using haematological and biochemical parameters of blood obtained from six poultry birds in three different families: Phasinidae (Chicken, Turkey and Quail), Numidae (Guinea Fowl) and Anatidae (Goose and Duck), to investigate the haematological and biochemical parameters and then statistically classify the species into distinct clusters. Blood was collected from the wing vein of five birds each from each species. Two sets of blood samples on each of the 30 birds across the six species were evaluated for haematology and serum biochemical parameters. Data from the laboratory were statistically analyzed using Minitab® (17) statistical software for descriptive, analysis of variance, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis and principal component analysis. The method used in the cluster analysis was the complete, Pearson’s distance model. Effects of species was highly significant (P<0.001) on all haematological and biochemical indices studied, with the exception of its effect on basophil and creatinine (P<0.05), providing a veritable platform for statistical discrimination across the six species investigated. However, the three clusters produced by the dendrogram had Duck and Turkey in the first cluster, Guinea Fowl was alone in the second cluster and Goose, Chicken and Quail were in the third cluster. There was no misclassification in the discriminant analysis, whereby all six species in the test data were classified appropriately with a 100 percent accuracy. However, this study calls for further investigation of the genetic similarity among the species in the light of the juxtaposition of Turkey and Goose in contrast to the conventional Linnean taxonomy currently in use. La classification binominale des organismes, développée par Linné, repose sur l’organisation des animaux et des plantes en groupes naturels apparentés selon des critères morphologiques, embryologiques ou biochimiques. Ces groupes sont hiérarchisés en royaume, phylum, classe, ordre, famille, genre et espèce. Cette étude visait à explorer l’utilité de paramètres hématologiques et biochimiques sanguins pour la discrimination taxonomique de six espèces de volailles appartenant à trois familles distinctes : les Phasianidés (poulet, dinde et caille), les Numididés (pintade) et les Anatidés (oie et canard). Le sang a été prélevé sur l’aile de cinq oiseaux par espèce. Pour chaque oiseau (n=30), deux échantillons sanguins ont été analysés afin d’évaluer les paramètres hématologiques et biochimiques sériques. Les données de laboratoire ont été analysées statistiquement à l’aide du logiciel Minitab® (17) pour réaliser des analyses descriptives, des analyses de variance, des analyses de cluster, des analyses discriminantes et des analyses en composantes principales. La méthode d’analyse de cluster utilisée était la méthode de distance complète de Pearson. L’espèce a eu un effet hautement significatif (p<0,001) sur tous les indices hématologiques et biochimiques étudiés, à l’exception des basophiles et de la créatinine (p<0,05). Cela démontre la pertinence de cette approche pour la discrimination statistique entre les six espèces étudiées. Le dendrogramme issu de l’analyse de cluster a regroupé le canard et la dinde dans un premier cluster, la pintade dans un second cluster distinct, et l’oie, le poulet et la caille dans un troisième cluster. L’analyse discriminante n’a identifié aucune erreur de classification, les six espèces de l’échantillon test ayant été classées correctement avec un taux de précision de 100 %. Néanmoins, cette étude souligne la nécessité d’approfondir l’investigation de la similarité génétique entre les espèces, notamment au regard du regroupement surprenant de la dinde et du canard dans l’analyse de cluster, ce qui diffère de la classification taxonomique linnéenne conventionnelle.

Nous proposons onze nouvelles variables pour classifier, caractériser et analyser les facteurs de variabilité spatiale des régimes hydrologiques des affluents du fleuve Saint-Laurent au Québec. Ces variables se rapportent exclusivement aux débits mensuels et utilisent quatre (volume d’écoulement, période d’occurrence, durée et amplitude de variabilité intra-annuelle des débits) des cinq critères proposés par Richter et al. (1996) pour caractériser écologiquement les régimes hydrologiques. L’analyse en composantes principales de ces onze variables hydrologiques a permis d’extraire trois composantes principales significatives après rotation d’axes par la méthode varimax. La première composante principale est associée aux débits saisonniers hivernaux et aux mois d’occurrence des débits mensuels maximums et minimums. La seconde composante est associée aux débits saisonniers printaniers et au rapport entre ces débits et les débits estivaux. Enfin, la dernière composante est associée au coefficient d’immodération (rapport entre les débits mensuels maximums et minimums) et aux débits mensuels minimums. La variance totale expliquée par ces trois composantes, à part presqu’égale, est d’environ 83%. Sur la base des signes de notes factorielles sur les trois composantes principales, les 72 rivières analysées ont été groupées en huit régimes hydrologiques naturels non contigus dans l’espace. Les caractéristiques de chaque régime hydrologique ont été clairement définies. Quant aux facteurs environnementaux qui influencent la variabilité spatiale des régimes hydrologiques, il est apparu que les six variables hydrologiques associées aux trois composantes principales sont principalement influencées par la température de l’air ainsi que la superficie couverte par les forêts, les lacs et les marais.

The annual height increment of the shoot can be divided into two morphogenetic components: the number of stem units initiated in the bud prior to bud break and their mean length. Observations were made on the lateral shoots of 43 Abiescephalonica open-pollinated families from three provenances located in an experimental site in southern France. Genetic parameters of the two components were evaluated with an analysis of variance. Correlations both between components and with annual height increment were examined at the phenotypic, genotypic, and individual levels. Differences between provenances were the result of number of stem units and annual height increment. Number of stem units presented a very high heritability and was strongly correlated to annual height increment at all variance levels. Mean stem unit length appeared to be more dependent on environmental variations and was less closely correlated to annual height increment, especially when genotypic data were considered. This particular growth strategy could be the consequence of A. cephalonica's adaptation to a Mediterranean-type climate. Of the two components studied, number of stem units was a better genetic predictor of annual height increment. A negative correlation between number of stem units and mean stem unit length was made apparent at the phenotypic and individual levels and should be considered when using number of stem units as a selection criterium.

TYPER, une nouvelle méthode d'analyse factorielle de type Q, propose de corriger les défauts de l'analyse en composantes principales de type Q (ACPQ). Un test comparatif démontre que TYPER représente bien une amélioration par rapport à l'ACPQ. TYPER est ensuite appliqué à une étude de marketing politique. Les résultats sont meilleurs que ceux obtenus avec les algorithmes de typologie K-MEANS et WARD.

La diversité pomologique du figuier (Ficus carica L.) dans les oasis tunisiennes a été étudiée en utilisant les descripteurs morphologiques. Vingt et un cultivars de figuier originaires des oasis de Kébili, Tozeur et Gafsa ont été analysés et comparés. L'analyse de la variance, l'analyse en composantes principales et l'analyse canonique hiérarchique de caractères liés aux fruits montrent une grande diversité au sein des cultivars étudiés. L'étude de cette diversité de germoplasme du figuier permet de détecter des cas homonymes et synonymies. Certains d'entre eux ont été sélectionnés. Parmi les descripteurs de haut degré de discrimination celles relatifs aux dimensions des fruits, la couleur des fruits, etc. Certains traits morphologiques sont susceptibles d'être utilisés comme descripteurs pour la classification des cultivars de figuier en Tunisie.

Lorsqu’on cherche à estimer une grandeur relative à une population à partir de données collectées seulement sur un échantillon, on s’expose à une erreur d’échantillonnage. Cette erreur a deux composantes : le biais, qui existe dès lors que la moyenne des estimations issues de tous les échantillons possibles diffère de la grandeur visée, et la variance, qui traduit une forme d’instabilité des estimations. Les sondages probabilistes permettent d’estimer l’erreur d’échantillonnage. Les sondages empiriques, par construction, ne le permettent pas. Il est entré dans l’usage de publier pour les sondages empiriques des estimations de l’erreur d’échantillonnage obtenues en « faisant comme si » il s’agissait de sondages probabilistes. C’est une pratique défendable dans certaines circonstances, mais un professionnalisme élevé est nécessaire pour la justifier.

Cet article a pour objectif de tester la transposition d'une échelle de personnalité humaine (Saucier, 1994) sur les marques au moyen d'une analyse factorielle confirmatoire. Notre étude s'appuie sur un échantillon de convenance de 537 étudiants et traite de seize marques achetées dans un contexte français. Une analyse de congruence entre les deux échelles de personnalité montre leur équivalence structurelle; une analyse en composantes principales non linéaires sur les associations entre les traits de personnalité humains et ceux de la marque établit leur équivalence sémantique. Enfin, une analyse canonique généralisée non linéaire permet d'apprécier la validité prédictive de la personnalité du consommateur et celle de la marque.

Les modèles à effets mixtes permettent d'analyser des données présentant une structure hiérarchique, telles que les données longitudinales qui sont des mesures collectées sur un même individu au cours du temps. Ces modèles prennent en compte la variabilité au sein des mesures effectuées sur chaque individu (variabilité intra-individuelle) et entre différents individus (variabilité inter-individuelle), grâce à deux types d'effets : les effets fixes, communs à tous les individus de la population, et les effets aléatoires, variables d'un individu à l'autre. Ces derniers sont modélisés par des variables latentes non observées, qui portent la variabilité inter-individuelle de la population. Identifier les paramètres du modèle à la source de cette variabilité est une question importante, en particulier pour l'étude de la variabilité génotypique en amélioration des plantes. Cet objectif peut être formulé comme un test statistique de nullité des variances des effets aléatoires et la statistique du rapport de vraisemblances peut être considérée. Dans ce contexte, ce test présente cependant plusieurs défis. Théoriquement, la nullité des variances testées pose problème car ces variances se trouvent à la frontière de l'espace des paramètres. Les résultats classiques des méthodes basées sur le maximum de vraisemblance ne sont pas valides. Par ailleurs, la matrice d'information de Fisher est singulière dans ce cadre. De plus, si des variances non testées sont nulles, les tests asymptotiques ne sont plus applicables. Dans ce travail de thèse, une procédure de test du rapport de vraisemblances de nullité des composantes de la variance dans les modèles à effets mixtes est proposée, basée sur le Bootstrap paramétrique. La consistance de cette procédure de test sous l'hypothèse nulle est démontrée, pour un choix judicieux du paramètre utilisé pour simuler les échantillons Bootstrap. Une étape de seuillage de ce paramètre est proposée pour pallier les problèmes de frontière et de singularité de la matrice d'Information de Fisher. D'un point de vue computationnel, les modèles à effets mixtes étant des modèles à variables latentes, leur vraisemblance est la plupart du temps non explicite, ce qui rend difficile l'estimation de la statistique du rapport de vraisemblances. Estimer cette statistique revient à estimer un ratio de constantes de normalisation de densités de probabilité. Une nouvelle procédure d'estimation de ce ratio, basée sur une approximation stochastique, est proposée. Elle consiste à trouver le zéro d'une fonction définie par une espérance. Ce nouvel estimateur est consistant et asymptotiquement gaussien. Il présente de très bonnes performances théoriques et pratiques et peut s'intégrer dans une procédure d'estimation de paramètres dans un modèle à variables latentes. Pour finir, motivé par l'analyse de la variabilité génotypique pour l'amélioration des plantes, une étude de 48 génotypes d'Arabidopsis thaliana est présentée. Un modèle mécaniste complexe décrivant les échanges de carbone et d'azote entre la plante et son environnement est intégré à un modèle à effets mixtes afin d'identifier des paramètres biologiques portant une partie de la variabilité génotypique observée<br>Mixed-effects models allow for the analysis of data with a hierarchical structure, such as longitudinal data which are measurements collected on the same individual over time. These models take into account variability within measurements for each individual (intra-individual variability) and between different individuals (inter-individual variability) through two types of effects: fixed effects, which are common to all individuals in the population, and random effects, which vary from one individual to another. The latter are modeled by unobserved latent variables that account for the inter-individual variability in the population. Identifying the model parameters that are the source of this variability is an important issue, especially for studying genotypic variability in plant breeding. This objective can be formulated as a statistical test of the nullity of the random effects variances and the likelihood ratio statistic can be considered. In this context, however, the test presents several challenges. Theoretically, the nullity of the tested variances is problematic because these variances are on the boundary of the parameter space. Classical results of methods based on maximum likelihood are not valid anymore. Moreover, the Fisher information matrix is singular in this context. Additionally, if non-tested variances are null, asymptotic tests are no longer applicable. In this thesis work, a likelihood ratio test procedure for the nullity of variance components in mixed-effects models is proposed, based on parametric Bootstrap. The consistency of this test procedure under the null hypothesis are demonstrated, provided that a judicious choice is made for the parameter used for simulating the Bootstrap samples. A shrinkage step for this parameter is proposed to address boundary issues and the singularity of the Fisher Information matrix. From a computational perspective, since mixed-effects models are latent variable models, their likelihood is often not explicit, making the estimation of the likelihood ratio statistic challenging. Estimating this statistic amounts to estimating a ratio of normalization constants of probability densities. A new estimation procedure for this ratio, based on stochastic approximation, is proposed. It involves finding the zero of a function defined by an expectation. This new estimator is consistent and asymptotically Gaussian. It demonstrates very good theoretical and practical performances and can be integrated into a parameter estimation procedure in a latent variable model. Finally, motivated by the analysis of genotypic variability for plant breeding, a study of 48 genotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana is presented. A complex mechanistic model describing carbon and nitrogen exchanges between the plant and its environment is integrated into a mixed-effects model to identify which biological parameters are responsible for the observed genotypic variability

Résumé :

Ce mémoire de thèse présente une étude fondamentale enrichie par des contributions qui sont articulées autour de la modélisation de processus ainsi qu'un diagnostic de défauts en utilisant l'analyse en composantes principales (ACP). <br /> Dans l'objectif d'un choix optimal du modèle ACP, une étude comparative de quelques critères connus dans la littérature nous a permis de conclure que le problème rencontré est souvent lié à une ignorance des variables indépendantes et quasi-indépendantes. Dans ce cadre, nous avons réalisé deux démonstrations mettant en évidence les limitations de deux critères en particulier la variance non reconstruite (VNR). En s'appuyant sur le principe d'une telle variance, nous avons proposé trois nouveaux critères. Parmi eux, deux ont été considérés comme étant empiriques car seule l'expérience permettra de prouver leur efficacité. Le troisième critère noté VNRVI représente un remède à la limitation du critère VNR. Une étude de sa consistance théorique a permis d'établir les conditions garantissant l'optimalité de son choix. Les résultats de simulation ont validé une telle théorie en prouvant ainsi que le critère VNRVI étant plus efficace que ceux étudiés dans cette thèse.<br /> Dans le cadre d'un diagnostic de défauts par ACP, l'approche de reconstruction des indices de détection ainsi que celle des contributions ont été utilisées. A travers une étude de généralisation, nous avons étendu le concept d'isolabilité de défauts par reconstruction à tout indice quadratique. Une telle généralisation nous a permis d'élaborer une analyse théorique d'isolabilité de défauts par reconstruction de la distance combinée versus celles des indices SPE et T2 de Hotelling en mettant en avant l'avantage de l'utilisation d'une telle distance. D'autre part, nous avons proposé une nouvelle méthode de contribution par décomposition partielle de l'indice SPE. Cette approche garantit un diagnostic correct de défauts simples ayant de grandes amplitudes. Nous avons également étendu une méthode de contribution classiquement connue par la RBC au cas multidimensionnel. Ainsi, la nouvelle forme garantit un diagnostic correct de défauts multiples de grandes amplitudes. En considérant la complexité de défauts, nous avons exploité la nouvelle approche de contribution RBC afin de proposer une nouvelle qui s'appelle RBCr. Cette dernière s'appuie sur un seuil de tolérance pour l'isolation de défauts. Une analyse de diagnosticabilité basée sur la RBCr montre que celle-ci garantit l'identification des défauts détectables. Ces derniers sont garantis isolables si leurs amplitudes satisfont les mêmes conditions d'isolabilité établies pour l'approche de reconstruction des indices.

Résumé :

Model credibility index is defined to be a sample size under which the power of rejection equals 0.5. It applies goodness-of-fit testing thinking and uses a one-number summary statistic as an assessment tool in a false model world. The estimation of the model credibility index involves a bootstrap resampling technique. To assess the consistency of the estimator of model credibility index, we instead study the variance of the power achieved at a fixed sample size. An improved subsampling method is proposed to obtain an unbiased estimator of the variance of power. We present two examples to interpret the mechanics of building model credibility index and estimate its error in model selection. One example is two-way independent model by Pearson Chi-square test, and another example is multi-dimensional logistic regression model using likelihood ratio test.

Abstract Analysis of variance is used to analyze the differences between group means in a sample, when the response variable is numeric (real numbers) and the explanatory variable(s) are all categorical. Each explanatory variable may have two or more factor levels, but if there is only one explanatory variable and it has only two factor levels, one should use Student's t-test and the result will be identical. Basically an ANOVA fits an intercept and slopes for one or more of the categorical explanatory variables. ANOVA is usually performed using the linear model function lm, or the more specific function aov, but there is a special function oneway.test when there is only a single explanatory variable. For a one-way ANOVA the non-parametric equivalent (if variance assumptions are not met) is the kruskal.test.

Résumé :

Objectif : Caractériser l’os maxillaire postérieur chez l’adulte d’un point de vue géométrique pour obtenir des modèles numériques standards par éléments finis. Matériel et méthodes : Les images CBCT maxillaires des patients qui ont visité le service de Chirurgie Orale du CHU de La Timone à Marseille, France ont été recueillies au cours de l’année 2016. Les sujets inclus devaient être âgés de plus de 21 ans et être édentés au moins à partir de la première prémolaire maxillaire. Les patients atteints d’une pathologie osseuse ou d’un traitement influençant le remodelage osseux n’ont pas été inclus. La zone maxillaire postérieure a été définie pour chaque CBCT et 6 mesures de hauteur et de largeur de la crête alvéolaire ont été réalisées à l’aide d’une méthode anthropométrique. Une étude Gauge Anova R&R avec analyse de la répétabilité et de la reproductibilité de la variance des mesures, ainsi qu’une analyse en composantes principales (ACP) pour isoler des modèles standards, ont été menées. Les modèles 3D ont été réalisés à partir d’images au format DICOM. Résultats : Le CBCT de 100 hommes et 100 femmes ont été retenus dans notre étude. 1200 mesures de crête alvéolaire ont été réalisée et les valeurs moyennes de hauteur et de largeur des différentes parties de la zone maxillaire postérieure étaient très disparates. L’analyse statistique de variance a validé la répétabilité et la reproductibilité de notre protocole de mesures. L’ACP n’a pas permis d’identifier les modèles standards et ceux- ci ont été modélisés à partir de notre base de données. Conclusion : Notre travail est le premier à considérer des paramètres anthropométriques sur un large échantillon de sujets dans la méthode des éléments finis. Nous mettons ainsi en évidence la perspective de réaliser des modèles anatomiques complexes et réalistes à partir de l’anatomie humaine pour réaliser des tests biomécaniques en implantologie orale.

One of the most important aspects of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Performance Test Code (PTC) thermal performance testing is the proper determination of test uncertainty since the Uncertainty Analysis (UA) validates the quality of a test as well as demonstrates that the test meets code requirements. It can also carry a commercial relevance when test tolerances are linked to uncertainty figures. This paper introduces an approach to the calculation of the random component of uncertainty when covariance exists between certain primary measurements in thermal performance testing. It demonstrates how to identify parameters that are co-variant, provides a methodology for properly calculating the aggregated random uncertainty of co-variant measurements, and discusses the effect of co-variance on UA results.

A recently developed equilibrium based curve/surface fitting method is extended to linear function with heteroscedastic data (variable variance). The concept of equilibrium weighted ‘force’ and ‘moment’ is proposed to derive curve fitting formulae, which are exactly the same as that obtained with the traditional weighted least squares (LS) method for a linear function. Furthermore, a system of four equations, i.e., a “force” equilibrium equation, a “moment” equilibrium equation, a “equivalency” equation, and a “moment balance” equation have been established to solve both mean curve and the standard deviation simultaneously. Finally, the application of these methods to data of fatigue and creep lives is presented.

An approach to increasing sensor performance and detection reliability for buried objects is to better understand which physical processes are dominant under certain environmental conditions. The present effort (Phase 2) builds on our previously published prior effort (Phase 1), which examined methods of determining the probability of detection and false alarm rates using thermal infrared for buried-object detection. The study utilized a 3.05 × 3.05 m test plot in Hanover, New Hampshire. Unlike Phase 1, the current effort involved removing the soil from the test plot area, homogenizing the material, then reapplying it into eight discrete layers along with buried sensors and objects representing targets of inter-est. Each layer was compacted to a uniform density consistent with the background undisturbed density. Homogenization greatly reduced the microscale soil temperature variability, simplifying data analysis. The Phase 2 study spanned May–November 2018. Simultaneous measurements of soil temperature and moisture (as well as air temperature and humidity, cloud cover, and incoming solar radiation) were obtained daily and recorded at 15-minute intervals and coupled with thermal infrared and electro-optical image collection at 5-minute intervals.

This paper examines the effect of employment protection regulation on gross job flows in a sample of developed and developing countries. By implementing a differences-in-differences test we lessen the potentially severe endogeneity and omitted variable problems associated with cross-country regressions. This test is based on the hypothesis that job security regulations are more binding in some sectors of economic activity than in others, depending on sector-specific characteristics such as the variance of demand or technological shocks. Unlike most of the existing literature, our analysis indicates that more stringent job security regulations slow down gross job flows, and this tendency is more pronounced in sectors that require higher labor flexibility. These effects occur within the sample of developed and developing countries and are very large in magnitude. Moreover, these effects are robust to changes in regulatory measures, measurement of sector flexibility requirements, control variables and samples.

Spectropolarimetric research has focused on target detections of materials that have a high degree of contrast from background materials, such as identification of a manmade object embedded in a vegetative background. This study presents an approach using spectropolarimetric imagery in visible, shortwave infrared, and longwave infrared bands to differentiate between similar natural and manmade materials. The method employs Michelson contrast and Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) H-test to determine if a distinction can be found in pairwise comparisons of similar and different materials using the Stokes parameters in the visible, shortwave infrared, and longwave infrared bands. Results showed that similar natural and manmade materials were differentiable in spectropolarimetric imagery using the Michelson contrast and ANOVA. This approach provides a way to use spectropolarimetric imagery to distinguish between materials that are similar to each other.

Résumé :

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a fiber optic sensing system that is used for vibration monitoring. At a minimum, DAS is composed of a fiber optic cable and an optic analyzer called an interrogator. The oil and gas industry has used DAS for over a decade to monitor infrastructure such as pipelines for leaks, and in recent years changes in DAS performance over time have been observed for DAS arrays that are buried in the ground. This dissertation investigates the effect that soil type, soil temperature, soil moisture, time in-situ, and vehicle loading have on DAS performance for fiber optic cables buried in soil. This was accomplished through a field testing program involving two newly installed DAS arrays. For the first installation, a new portion of DAS array was added to an existing DAS array installed a decade prior. The new portion of the DAS array was installed in four different soil types: native fill, sand, gravel, and an excavatable flowable fill. Soil moisture and temperature sensors were buried adjacent to the fiber optic cable to monitor seasonal environmental changes over time. Periodic impact testing was performed at set locations along the DAS array for over one year. A second, temporary DAS array was installed to test the effect of vehicle loading on DAS performance. Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of the DAS response was used for all the tests to evaluate the system performance. The results of the impact testing program indicated that the portions of the array in gravel performed more consistently over time. Changes in soil moisture or soil temperature did not appear to affect DAS performance. The results also indicated that time DAS performance does change somewhat over time. Performance variance increased in new portions of array in all material types through time. The SNR in portions of the DAS array in native silty sand material dropped slightly, while the SNR in portions of the array in sand fill and flowable fill material decreased significantly over time. This significant change in performance occurred while testing halted from March 2020 to August 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. These significant changes in performance were observed in the new portion of test bed, while the performance of the prior installation remained consistent. It may be that, after some time in-situ, SNR in a DAS array will reach a steady state. Though it is unfortunate that testing was on pause while changes in DAS performance developed, the observed changes emphasize the potential of DAS to be used for infrastructure change-detection monitoring. In the temporary test bed, increasing vehicle loads were observed to increase DAS performance, although there was considerable variability in the measured SNR. The significant variation in DAS response is likely due to various industrial activities on-site and some disturbance to the array while on-boarding and off-boarding vehicles. The results of this experiment indicated that the presence of load on less than 10% of an array channel length may improve DAS performance. Overall, this dissertation provides guidance that can help inform the civil engineering community with respect to installation design recommendations related to DAS used for infrastructure monitoring.

Résumé :

This report provides two sets of equations for estimating peak discharge quantiles at annual exceedance probabilities (AEPs) of 0.50, 0.20, 0.10, 0.04, 0.02, 0.01, 0.005, and 0.002 (recurrence intervals of 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, and 500 years, respectively) for watersheds in Illinois based on annual maximum peak discharge data from 117 watersheds in and near northeastern Illinois. One set of equations was developed through a temporal analysis with a two-step least squares-quantile regression technique that measures the average effect of changes in the urbanization of the watersheds used in the study. The resulting equations can be used to adjust rural peak discharge quantiles for the effect of urbanization, and in this study the equations also were used to adjust the annual maximum peak discharges from the study watersheds to 2010 urbanization conditions. The other set of equations was developed by a spatial analysis. This analysis used generalized least-squares regression to fit the peak discharge quantiles computed from the urbanization-adjusted annual maximum peak discharges from the study watersheds to drainage-basin characteristics. The peak discharge quantiles were computed by using the Expected Moments Algorithm following the removal of potentially influential low floods defined by a multiple Grubbs-Beck test. To improve the quantile estimates, regional skew coefficients were obtained from a newly developed regional skew model in which the skew increases with the urbanized land use fraction. The skew coefficient values for each streamgage were then computed as the variance-weighted average of at-site and regional skew coefficients. The drainage-basin characteristics used as explanatory variables in the spatial analysis include drainage area, the fraction of developed land, the fraction of land with poorly drained soils or likely water, and the basin slope estimated as the ratio of the basin relief to basin perimeter. This report also provides: (1) examples to illustrate the use of the spatial and urbanization-adjustment equations for estimating peak discharge quantiles at ungaged sites and to improve flood-quantile estimates at and near a gaged site; (2) the urbanization-adjusted annual maximum peak discharges and peak discharge quantile estimates at streamgages from 181 watersheds including the 117 study watersheds and 64 additional watersheds in the study region that were originally considered for use in the study but later deemed to be redundant. The urbanization-adjustment equations, spatial regression equations, and peak discharge quantile estimates developed in this study will be made available in the web-based application StreamStats, which provides automated regression-equation solutions for user-selected stream locations. Résumé :

The vadose (unsaturated) zone forms a major hydrologic link between the ground surface and underlying aquifers. To understand properly its role in protecting groundwater from near surface sources of contamination, one must be able to analyze quantitatively water flow and contaminant transport in variably saturated subsurface environments that are highly heterogeneous, often consisting of multiple geologic units and/or high and/or low permeability inclusions. The specific objectives of this research were: (i) to develop efficient and accurate tools for probabilistic delineation of dominant geologic features comprising the vadose zone; (ii) to develop a complementary set of data analysis tools for discerning the fractal properties of hydraulic and transport parameters of highly heterogeneous vadose zone; (iii) to develop and test the associated computational methods for probabilistic analysis of flow and transport in highly heterogeneous subsurface environments; and (iv) to apply the computational framework to design an “optimal” observation network for monitoring and forecasting the fate and migration of contaminant plumes originating from agricultural activities. During the course of the project, we modified the third objective to include additional computational method, based on the notion that the heterogeneous formation can be considered as a mixture of populations of differing spatial structures. Regarding uncertainly analysis, going beyond approaches based on mean and variance of system states, we succeeded to develop probability density function (PDF) solutions enabling one to evaluate probabilities of rare events, required for probabilistic risk assessment. In addition, we developed reduced complexity models for the probabilistic forecasting of infiltration rates in heterogeneous soils during surface runoff and/or flooding events Regarding flow and transport in variably saturated, spatially heterogeneous formations associated with fine- and coarse-textured embedded soils (FTES- and CTES-formations, respectively).We succeeded to develop first-order and numerical frameworks for flow and transport in three-dimensional (3-D), variably saturated, bimodal, heterogeneous formations, with single and dual porosity, respectively. Regarding the sampling problem defined as, how many sampling points are needed, and where to locate them spatially in the horizontal x₂x₃ plane of the field. Based on our computational framework, we succeeded to develop and demonstrate a methdology that might improve considerably our ability to describe quntitaively the response of complicated 3-D flow systems. The results of the project are of theoretical and practical importance; they provided a rigorous framework to modeling water flow and solute transport in a realistic, highly heterogeneous, composite flow system with uncertain properties under-specified by data. Specifically, they: (i) enhanced fundamental understanding of the basic mechanisms of field-scale flow and transport in near-surface geological formations under realistic flow scenarios, (ii) provided a means to assess the ability of existing flow and transport models to handle realistic flow conditions, and (iii) provided a means to assess quantitatively the threats posed to groundwater by contamination from agricultural sources.
