Résumé :
The acoustic nonlinearity parameter (B/A) of ternary liquid mixtures of heterocyclic compounds viz. pyridine and quinoline with phenol in benzene has been evaluated at 308.15, 318.15, and 328.15 K by three different methods viz. Tong–Dong method, Beyer’s method, and Beyer’s method using Tong–Dong coefficients. The molecular interactions in the liquid mixtures are explained on the basis of excess nonlinearity parameter ((B/A)E). Sehgal’s relations for calculating the molecular properties for pure liquids are extended to the ternary liquid mixtures.

Résumé :
The electrorheological (ER) properties were studied with ternary suspensions containing solid and liquid dispersoids in silicone oil (DMS). The solid dispersoid used was polyether/montmorillonite nanocomposite particles in which polyether molecules were intercalated between the layers of montmorillonite. The liquid dispersoid was urethane-modified polyether prepared from 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and poly(propylene glycol) (PPG). The steady shear viscosity and dynamic viscoelasticity were measured with a rotating parallel disc rheometer equipped with ER measurement system. The binary and ternary mixtures of these solid and liquid dispersoids with DMS, i.e. composite particle/DMS suspension, polyether/DMS liquid blend, and ternary blend containing both dispersoids, showed an increase of viscosity in response to an electric field (positive ER effect). The ER effect of a ternary suspension containing the particles and polyether liquids was larger than those of binary suspension or blend with one of these dispersoids. The ER effect was found to be improved by combination of the solid and liquid dispersoids, although the recovery time of viscosity after removing the electric field became rather longer, which would be due to the partly irreversible macroscopic aggregation of the dispersoids.

Résumé :
Ternary ER blends composed of two different liquids and solid dispersoid were prepared by blending silicone oil, viscous polyether liquid, and urethane powder at various compositions. The polyether liquid used here was polytetramethylene glycol modified with phenyl isocyanate, and the powder was urethane derivative of 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate. Under certain conditions, some of the ternary blends showed larger increase of viscosity under an electric field than those of binary mixtures prepared from each component of the ternary one. In this case, the viscous polyether and urethane powder act cooperativity by forming some particular structures within the blends. Microscopic observation revealed that each urethane particle was covered with polyether liquid in the absence of electric field, and that the binary droplets aggregated to form viscous bridges between the electrodes keeping powders within them.

Résumé :
Liquid-liquid equilibrium data in the water-ethanol-toluene system were correlated by the superposition of the Wilson and Redlich-Kister equations with a ternary term. The correlation of both homogeneous binary systems was taken from the literature. The ternary liquid-liquid equilibrium data were at all temperatures satisfactorily described on using only three ternary parameters determined from the equilibrium data at 50 °C. The parameters obtained by the correlation yield also a good estimate of boiling point and composition of homogeneous azeotropic mixture.

Résumé :
The study of viscosity-temperature dependence is important for the design and the optimization of several industrial processes and products. In this context, an interesting equation is recently proposed for pure solvents correlating the two parameters of the viscosity Arrhenius-type equation, as knowing the activation energy (Ea) and the pre-exponential factor (As), allowing the simplification of the viscosity Arrhenius equation to become an expression depending on only one parameter instead of two. The present work investigates the validity of the simplified Arrhenius-type equation for ternary fluids mixtures. The extension of the proposed equation to ternary liquid mixtures is very important since it simplifies the estimation of viscous behavior and the ensuing calculations. Using statistical methods and 114 experimental data from the literature on viscosity for 5 ternary liquid mixtures over different temperature ranges at atmospheric pressure, we found that the validation of the proposed equation depends significantly on the density of liquids and is validated only for 4 studied ternary liquid mixtures. This result opens the way to investigate the sensitivity of the equation’s parameters for more specific mixtures.

Résumé :
Analysis of Partition Coefficients of Ternary Liquid-Liquid Equilibrium Systems and Finding Consistency Using Uniquac Model The objective of this study is to investigate the change in partition coefficient with a change in the concentration of the solute in a liquid system consisting of two relatively immiscible solvents. To investigate the changes in the partition coefficients, the data of the partition coefficients at infinite dilution and the ternary Liquid-Liquid Equilibrium (LLE) data at finite concentrations of the solute should be consistent. In this study, 29 ternary systems that are found in literature and for which the partition coefficients at infinite dilution and the ternary LLE data cannot be predicted accurately by the universal quasi-chemical (UNIQUAC) model are identified. On the basis of this model, some consistent and inconsistent ternary systems are introduced. Three inconsistent systems, namely hexane-butanol-water, CCl4 (carbon tetrachloride)-PA (propanoic acid)-water, and hexane-PA-water, are chosen for detailed analysis in this study. The UNIQUAC activity coefficient model is used to represent these data over a range of concentrations. The results show large errors, exhibiting the inability of this model to correlate the data. Furthermore, some ternary systems in which cross behavior of solutes between two phases observed are identified.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTAn innovative model based on spinodal-like decomposition of supercooled multi-component liquids was developed for prediction of the glass forming ability (GFA) of ternary alloys. The up-hill diffusion in the initially homogeneous freezing ternary liquid was considered as a necessary condition for solidification of crystalline phases. New generalized criteria of spinodal decomposition of ternary alloys for time/space correlated fluctuations were formulated. These criteria take into account both thermodynamic and kinetic properties of the system. The introduced criteria were found to provide adequate GFA evaluation of different compositions in the Mg-based ternary alloys.

Résumé :
The liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) of ternary mixtures (water + palm oil biodiesel + methanol) was measured under atmospheric pressure and temperatures of 303.15K, 313.15K and 323.15K. The mutual solubility of biodiesel and water increased as the increasing of ratio of methanol. Also, the mutual dissolution of the mixture was slightly promoted by increasing temperature. The phase diagrams and tie lines for the ternary system were determined by high-temperature gas chromatography (HTGC). NRTL and UINQUAC models were applied to fit the experimental data for the ternary system, and the binary interaction parameters were obtained by regression on the experimental data. Both models could describe the LLE behavior of the systems fairly well.

An improved Lewis cell has been used as an efficient method to determine the mass transfer coefficient for any ternary multi-component system. In this paper the individual mass transfer coefficients were determined for three ternary systems: water-acetone-carbon tetrachloride water-acetone-chloroform and water-acetone-toluene, using the improved Lewis cell. Criteria! equations were developed to calculate the mass transfer coefficients when one or both (organic and aqueous) phases were agitated and when solute transfer occurs in both directions.

Résumé :
Liquid-liquid equilibria were measured at 20 °C in the W-MeOH-MTBE-EG quaternary system (W is water, MeOH is methyl alcohol, MTBE is methyl tert-butyl ether, and EG is ethylene glycol) and in the W-MeOH-MTBE, W-MTBE-EG and MeOH-MTBE-EG ternary systems. In the W-MeOH-MTBE-EG, W-MeOH-MTBE, and MeOH-MTBE-EG systems, the vapour-liquid equilibria at atmospheric pressure were also measured. The experimental data of the quaternary system were compared with those modelled by superposition of the Wilson and Redlich-Kister equations with the ternary term, whose parameters were determined based on the corresponding binary and, in some cases, ternary systems. A very good agreement was obtained for both the liquid-liquid and vapour-liquid equilibria.

Résumé :
Temperature-dependent interaction parameters for excess free energies of mixing of sub-binary systems of Al-Fe-Si ternary liquid alloys were optimised using the experiment data in the frame of Redlich-Kister (R-K) polynomials. These optimised parameters were then used to compute the partial excess free energy of sub-binary and ternary liquid alloys. The surface tension and surface concentration of sub-binary and the ternary liquid alloys were computed using Butler equation. The temperature dependent coefficients of R-K polynomials for excess surface tensions of the sub-binary systems were optimised which were then used to estimate the surface tension of ternary alloy using Chou, Kohler and Toop modelling equations at temperatures 1773, 1873, 1973 and 2073 K. The surface tension of the ternary alloy obtained using aforementioned models were found to be in good agreement from Fe and Al corners but some deviations were observed from Si corner.

Résumé :
A theoretical method for calculating the thermodynamic properties and phase equilibria of a binary liquid mixture using the reference interaction-site model (RISM) integral equation theory, which we had proposed recently, was extended to ternary liquid systems containing salt. A novel dielectric correction of the RISM theory for a mixture of solvents was also proposed. The theory was applied to mixtures composed of water, alcohol, and NaCl, where the alcohol was either methanol or ethanol. The decrease in NaCl solubility with increasing alcohol molar fractions in the solvent was calculated. In the ethanol system, the theory yielded salt-induced liquid–liquid phase separation, which was observed experimentally in a ternary mixture of water, 1-propanol, and NaCl. The phase diagram of the ternary system was determined theoretically.

Résumé :
AbstractThe liquid–liquid equilibrium (LLE) data for a ternary system {methyl eugenol + linalool +1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate [EMIM][HSO4]} (Meu-Lin-IL) were measured at 298.2 K and atmospheric pressure. The Othmer–Tobias correlation was used to verify the reliability of the experimental tie-line data. The solubility curves were obtained using the cloud point titration indicating the liquid-liquid equilibrium of the ternary system was in Type II class where two immiscible curve pairs were attained. Distribution coefficients, separation factors and selectivity were calculated for the immiscibility regions. The calculated results were compared with the experimental data. Characterization studies were performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR) techniques.
