Résumé :
Current State of Terminology in Lithuania: Scientific Research, Management and Education The article discusses the current state of terminology in Lithuania, presents terminological research carried out in the last five years, analyses ways of Lithuanian terminology management, and briefly overviews terminological education and teaching in Lithuania.Lithuanian terminological research is mostly carried out at the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and at universities and other research institutes. The largest part of terminological research is carried out at the Centre of Terminology of the Institute of the Lithuanian Language, which researches Lithuanian terminology and terminography, analyses the use of Lithuanian terminology in different fields.Three ways of terminology management are discussed: terminography, creation of term banks and databases and standardisation of terms. The number of term dictionaries published in Lithuania is rather considerable – over 600. The most productive period for publishing term dictionaries is from 1990 up to date. Between 1990–2013 more than 420 term dictionaries and special encyclopaedias were published. The main and most important terminology database in Lithuania is the Term Bank of the Republic of Lithuania (lt Lietuvos Respublikos terminų bankas, further – LTB), initiated in 2004. This bank is created as a common information system of state institutions administered by the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language (further – Language Commission). There are more than 237,000 term entries in LTB. The article discusses two more terminology databases containing Lithuanian terminology sources – IATE and EUROTERMBANK. The Lithuanian Standards Board, in addition to other work, prepares Lithuanian standards of terms and offers these terms to the Language Commission for evaluation. Since 2000, the Lithuanian Standards Board has been creating a database of standardised terms which currently contains about 64,000 terms. In Lithuania, terminology also exists as an academic discipline; at many universities, philologists are offered a course in terminology. At many universities, students of other non-philological disciplines are taught a course in language for specific purposes, which covers matters of terminology and terms. Litewska Rada Standaryzacji oprócz innych prac przygotowuje litewskie standardy terminów i przedstawia je Komisji Języka do oceny.

“By their terminology you shall know them...”: in search of the differentia specifica of modern linguistics. Summary: In the article, an attempt is made to identify the notion and its corresponding terminology that could serve the purposes of the differentia specifica of the ongoing polarisation of modern linguistics. As the terms system, symbol, functionalism, and conventionalism are found inadequate, it is the notion ‘continuum’, and its terminology, that is claimed to possibly tell apart the two ends (structural/generative and functional/ cognitive, respectively) of the linguistic cline. What follows is a report on whether or not, and to what extent, the ‘continuum’ terminology features in the latest 11 issues (2015–2019) of the three selected Polish journals of general linguistics. Keywords: terminology, continuum, continuity, structural linguistics vs. cognitive linguistics

Résumé :
SUMMARY On the Role of Planned Languages in Eugen Wüster's Work on Terminology Science The founder of terminology science was also an important interlinguist and a pioneering researcher on Esperanto. His profound interest in planned languages had a significant effect on the development of his ideas on terminology. The article sketches the relationship between planned languages ([artificial] world auxiliary languages) and specialized technical languages, with particular reference to Esperanto, and analyzes its significance for several aspects of Wüster's work (the Encyclopaedic Esperanto-German Dictionary, his dissertation International Language Standardisation in Technology, the international dictionary of electrical technology, and the project of an international terminological code).

The article discusses selected issues concerning the Uralic terminology, focusing on Polish terms and names. We understand Uralic studies as both a study programme and a scholarly line of research. In Section 2 of the paper, we delimit a general point of reference for the Uralic terminology, whereas Section 3 provides an overview of specific terminological problems related to the labelling of Uralic languages and ethnolects, with special emphasis on the Finno-Ugric group. We conclude that the Polish Uralic terminology lacks a number of relevant Uralic names/labels/terms and champions its own idiosyncratic terminological solutions. Further standardisation and internationalisation of the Uralic terms in Polish are recommended. Wybrane problemy i przykłady terminologii uralistycznej.
The aim of this work is to point out and describe Terminology problems related to the diachronic variation of a terminology based on the conceptual analysis of two structures, concerning two process models (sugar plantation and factory) of a same technical area - sugar production, separated by a certain period of time and submitted to constant technological, linguistic and cultural revolutions. For this reason, we described the factors which interfere in those transformations; the manner that the consolidation level of a social sphere represents its systemic regularity; and we tried to prove, based on a diachronic research, that the dynamics of the speciality subsystems has the same functioning of the one that rules the general language.

Résumé :
A methodology for knowledge acquisition from terminology databases is presented. The methodology outlines how the content of a terminology database can be mapped onto a knowledge base with a minimum of human intervention. Typically, terms are defined and elaborated by terminologists by using sentences that have a common syntactic and semantic structure. It has been argued that in defining terms, terminologists use a local grammar and that this local grammar can be used to parse the definitions. The methodology has been implemented in a program called DEARSys (Definition Analysis and Representation System), that reads definition sentences and extracts new concepts and conceptual relations about the defined terms. The linguistic component of the system is a parser for the sublanguage of terminology definitions that analyses a definition into its logical form, which in turn is mapped onto a frame-based representation. The logical form is based on first-order logic (FOL) extended with untyped lambda calculus. Our approach is data-driven and domain independent; it has been applied to definitions of various domains. Experiments were conducted with human subjects to evaluate the information acquired by the system. The results of the preliminary evaluation were encouraging.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study is to examine beer reviews to see what descriptors are identified and used to describe beers. Also, the domains APPEARANCE, AROMA, FLAVOUR, MOUTHFEEL and OVERALL IMPRESSION are analysed. The theoretical framework stems from the genre of wine reviews, with additional backbone from beer sensory analysis and established beer terminology. Through analysis of 27 beer reviews in three leading beer magazines, the study shows that most typically object descriptors and property descriptors relating to the raw materials are used. In terms of domains, APPEARANCE and MOUTHFEEL have few descriptors, whilst AROMA and FLAVOUR have a higher number of descriptors and more categories. The domain with more process related and human-like descriptions, as well as more elaborate expressions to entice the consumer, is OVERALL IMPRESSION.

Résumé :
Language planning and medical terminology management in Jordan is investigated as a case study, both qualitatively and quantitatively, from the perspective of general language planning and terminology management theories and principles. English is the communicative and professional medical language in Jordan. Medical staff often switch from English to Arabic and vice versa. Arabic medical terminology, which is important for patient communication, is not properly standardized. There is more than one Arabic medical equivalent for the same medical concept, which causes ambiguity and confusion to language users. The assumption of this study is that Arabic medical terms are available, but they are not well disseminated. Code switching, bilingualism, euphemism, dysphemism, synonymy, term formation are discussed in their relation to language planning and terminology management. The methodology includes attitudinal questionnaires for investigating medical language users' opinions and attitudes towards terminology management, a translation form for evaluating the mechanisms for spreading Arabic medical terminology, a survey of medical dictionaries for the availability of Arabic medical terminology, and interviews with the people responsible for language planning and terminology management. The expected benefits of having a standardized and disseminated Arabic medical terminology include the enhancement of communication between health care providers and users, the facilitation of the translation process, the transfer of medical knowledge to Jordan, an increase in the health awareness of people, and improving the education of medical related careers. The research concludes that there is no organized strategy for innovating and disseminating medical terminology in Jordan. The subjects are generally in favour of keeping English as the medical language as well as having a standardised and disseminated Arabic medical terminology. A practical stategy is proposed, and the terminology committee is recommended to appoint a Medical Terminology Monitor and a Liaison Person.

The language industry is experiencing a paradigm shift. New collaborative practices facilitate exchanges between people from all around the world. Although some of these practices, such as collaborative translation, have attracted the interest of many researchers, others, such as collaborative terminography, are little known. What is the spectrum of collaborative terminography? How do collaborative terminography and traditional terminography differ? What are their respective strengths and weaknesses? This thesis defines collaborative terminography, identifies its characteristics and its various modes and forms, and presents collaborative tools to enable a thorough understanding of the phenomenon. We compare traditional and collaborative terminography through a case study of a traditional model (TERMIUM Plus) and a collaborative model (TermWiki) to identify similarities and differences between them. We then list their respective strengths and weaknesses. We conclude that traditional terminography and collaborative terminography differ mainly in terms of participants, interaction styles and infrastructure.

Résumé :
This research is based on the hypothesis that all terminological activities are founded upon some fundamental principles which, at the same time, are manifested in sociolinguistic context-bound variations or parameters. Answering the research questions, the thesis gains an advantage of employing both field research and literature. The former deals with carrying out a comparative study and using a maximum variation sampling technique for gathering data from Termcat, TNC, DGLFLF and the Academy of Persian Language and Literature (APLL). To control the study in a systematic way, a questionnaire concentrating on macro- and micro-structures of the target organizations has been prepared as a route map. The research also derives benefit of literature from more than thirty linguistic situations. The data were first coded and then thematically categorized according to their major similarities. The results came within three components: planning theory, linguistics of science and implementation layers. In the next step, the thesis found the second level of similarities or universal principles. The data processing continued to arrive at minor (universal or restricted) principles. The final form of a terminology planning work is determined by parameters arising out of “values”, put under nodes of principles. The values are, in fact, sociolinguistic potentialities developed and limitations imposed by a specific ecolinguistic environment.

The article examines the methods applied for the operationalization of terminology in school Sciences and Biology textbooks. We list the strategies used to approach terminology in both scientific/didactic well-illustrated portions of the text and the adjacent methodologic apparatus (questions, tasks, lab work, projects etc.) and then correlate such strategies with the cognitive processes they imply. We examine the variety of terminology-approaching methods, which are always presented through verbal code in any curricular area and any textbook, and correlate them with the relevant learning opportunities and learning outcomes, which are frequently translated into iconic or practical code.
