We present a brief review of the use of nonlinear optics for broadband terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy with femtosecond laser pulses. The generation of THz pulses is accomplished by optical rectification and coherent detection by electro-optic sampling or field-induced second-harmonic generation. The approach permits exceptional time response, as well as the possibility for multichannel detection schemes.

This paper introduces a method to detect the content of sucrose, an adulterant of red ginseng, based on terahertz spectroscopy. Experiments were carried out on red ginseng with 6 levels of adulterated concentrations using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). We separately extracted the information of the terahertz spectral curve by principal component analysis (PCA) and Monte Carlo uninformative variable elimination (MCUVE) and then separately performed quantitative analysis by partial least squares regression (PLSR) and support vector regression (SVR). Because the nonlinear line factor in the terahertz spectral curve of red ginseng samples is considered, the MCUVE-SVR has high correlation coefficient (>0.99) and ratio prediction to deviation (>7.4), low root means square error of deviation (<1.2%), and Bias (<0.05%). The results prove that MCUVE-SVR can be regarded as an ideal quantitative analysis method in the detection of sucrose incorporation in red ginseng by terahertz spectroscopy.

<p>Chiral metamaterial is a new breakthrough in the fabrication of a metamaterial because of the capability of providing different refractive index values for each circular polarization angle. This provides opportunities to obtain negative refractive index values, without the necessity to have simultaneously negative values for both permittivity and permeability. This study investigated the optical rectification, which is the phenomenon of second order non-linear optics in the chiral metamaterial. This relates to the testing of the new designs of square structure chiral metamaterial. Optical rectification is often used to 'rectify' femtoseconds laser from the realm of visible light into the terahertz domain. Nonlinear response of metamaterial was observed by terahertz emission spectroscopy. The results showed that the obtained terahertz signal is proportional to the square of the laser power used. This suggests that in the<br />incoherent optical rectification, there is a mixture of optical rectification with the second harmonic wave generation. Development of square-structured chiral metamaterials is expected to be an alternative source of material due to the lack of non-linear material that can be used in the terahertz domain.</p>

AbstractBroadband, quantum-engineered, quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are the most powerful chip-scale sources of optical frequency combs (FCs) across the mid-infrared and the terahertz (THz) frequency range. The inherently short intersubband upper state lifetime spontaneously allows mode proliferation, with large quantum efficiencies, as a result of the intracavity four-wave mixing. QCLs can be easily integrated with external elements or engineered for intracavity embedding of nonlinear optical components and can inherently operate as quantum detectors, providing an intriguing technological platform for on-chip quantum investigations at the nanoscale. The research field of THz FCs is extremely vibrant and promises major impacts in several application domains crossing dual-comb spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, time-domain nanoimaging, quantum science and technology, metrology and nonlinear optics in a miniaturized and compact architecture. Here, we discuss the fundamental physical properties and the technological performances of THz QCL FCs, highlighting the future perspectives of this frontier research field.

Two-dimensional Raman and hybrid terahertz-Raman spectroscopic techniques provide invaluable insight into molecular structures and dynamics of condensed-phase systems. However, corroborating experimental results with theory is difficult due to the high computational cost of incorporating quantum-mechanical effects in the simulations. Here, we present the equilibrium–nonequilibrium ring-polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD), a practical computational method that can account for nuclear quantum effects on the two-time response function of nonlinear optical spectroscopy. Unlike a recently developed approach based on the double Kubo transformed (DKT) correlation function, our method is exact in the classical limit, where it reduces to the established equilibrium-nonequilibrium classical molecular dynamics method. Using benchmark model calculations, we demonstrate the advantages of the equilibrium–nonequilibrium RPMD over classical and DKT-based approaches. Importantly, its derivation, which is based on the nonequilibrium RPMD, obviates the need for identifying an appropriate Kubo transformed correlation function and paves the way for applying real-time path-integral techniques to multidimensional spectroscopy.

The solvation properties of liquid water originate from the transient network of hydrogen-bonded molecules. In order to probe the coupling between the different modes of this network, nonlinear terahertz (THz) spectroscopy techniques are required. Ideally, these techniques should use a minimal volume and capitalize on sensitive field-resolved detection. Here we performed open aperture z-scan transmission experiments on static liquid cells, and detect the THz fields with electro-optical techniques. We show that it is possible to quantify the nonlinear response of liquid water at ~1 THz even when large signals originate from the sample holder windows.

The study of ultrafast laser interaction with graphene-like materials based on transition metal dichalcogenides attracts most scientific groups. It is connected with potential use of these materials in flexible optoelectronic devices of visible and THz range. In this paper the parameters of generation of terahertz field from the surface of bulk layered crystal and monolayer film of tungsten diselenide are analyzed. Generation of terahertz radiation from the surface of experimental samples was studied by the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in reflection geometry. Bulk layered crystals of tungsten diselenide were grown by gas transport reactions. Monolayers of tungsten diselenide crystals were grown by chemical vapor deposition on a silicon substrate. The bandwidth of the generated terahertz radiation from the surface of the bulk layered tungsten diselenide crystal was ~ 3.5 THz. For tungsten diselenide monolayer the spectrum bandwidth of the generated THz radiation was ~ 2.5 THz. The peak amplitude of the generated terahertz field for both samples was at a frequency of ~ 1 THz. Research of the influence of the angle of rotation of a polarization plane of optical femtosecond pump on peak-to-peak amplitude of the generated terahertz field from the surface of investigated samples was carried out. Symmetry analysis of the azimuthal dependence of THz radiation made it possible to separate the mechanisms of THz radiation and evaluate their contribution. The analysis results confirm that the only possible contribution to the generation of terahertz radiation in a tungsten diselenide monolayer crystal is the second order nonlinear optical effect – optical rectification. One of the contributions to the generation of tungsten diselenide is a nonlinear-optical effect of the third order – surface optical rectification.

Intense terahertz (THz) pulses facilitate the observation of various nonlinear optical effects and the manipulation of material properties. In this work, we report a convenient approach to produce strong broadband THz pulses with a center frequency tunable between 2 and 4 THz. A coherent THz light source with a pulse energy of 1.2 mJ can be generated from low-cost crystalline quartz using a tilted-pulse-front scheme. Thanks to the wide transparent spectral window and high damage threshold, our theoretical analysis and experiment show that the THz conversion efficiency in quartz reaches 0.05%, which is comparable with that in LiNbO3 at room temperature, while the output THz spectral range is much broader in the former. This work not only provides the light source that is urgently needed for nonlinear THz spectroscopy beyond 2 THz but also offers an alternative route in selecting nonlinear optical crystals for optical frequency conversion.

Terahertz (THz) gas photonics uses gas as THz emitter and sensor for time-domain spectroscopy. Unique properties of the gas promise scalable, strong THz wave generation with broad spectral range covering the entire THz gas (0.3 THz to 35 THz). The systematic study of THz wave generation and detection in different gases shows that the generation efficiency is monotonically decreasing with the ionization potential of the gas molecules while the detection efficiency is linearly proportional to the third order nonlinear coefficient of the gas molecules. We also discuss the development of THz wave detection using laser-induced fluorescence and coherent control with THz gas photonics.

We demonstrate a method for obtaining optical coefficients over a broad terahertz spectral range from 1.5 THz to 16 THz at room temperature. Based on the interferograms directly acquired by a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), multi-beam interference principle combining Fresnel’s formula is employed to extract the refraction index and the extinction coefficient, giving the basis for calculating dielectric coefficients. It avoids the uncertainty and phase instability while using Kramers–Kronig (KK) relations and overcomes the limited frequency range of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (TDS). Moreover, this method has better stability and is needless of cutting useful information between neighboring interference peaks for thin samples compared with TDS, making it a general processing method for interferograms and a good alternative for terahertz dielectric measurement.

Two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (2DCS) diagnoses a material’s nonlinear optical response with multiple time variables, thus offering information that is inaccessible with conventional linear optical spectroscopy. The 2DCS in the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet frequency range has yielded fruitful results in chemistry and biology. In the terahertz (THz) frequency window, 2DCS has shown its promise in the study of strongly-correlated electronic systems. As a guide to this rapidly developing field, we survey the current status of the theory of THz-2DCS in strongly-correlated electronic systems. We then introduce the basic concepts and theoretical methods of 2DCS, and analyze the main characteristics of the two-dimensional spectra. Finally, we summarize our latest theoretical research in this field.

Terahertz (THz) imaging is a rapidly emerging field, thanks to many potential applications in diagnostics, manufacturing, medicine and material characterisation. However, the relatively coarse resolution stemming from the large wavelength limits the deployment of THz imaging in micro- and nano-technologies, keeping its potential benefits out-of-reach in many practical scenarios and devices. In this context, single-pixel techniques are a promising alternative to imaging arrays, in particular when targeting subwavelength resolutions. In this work, we discuss the key advantages and practical challenges in the implementation of time-resolved nonlinear ghost imaging (TIMING), an imaging technique combining nonlinear THz generation with time-resolved time-domain spectroscopy detection. We numerically demonstrate the high-resolution reconstruction of semi-transparent samples, and we show how the Walsh–Hadamard reconstruction scheme can be optimised to significantly reduce the reconstruction time. We also discuss how, in sharp contrast with traditional intensity-based ghost imaging, the field detection at the heart of TIMING enables high-fidelity image reconstruction via low numerical-aperture detection. Even more striking—and to the best of our knowledge, an issue never tackled before—the general concept of “resolution” of the imaging system as the “smallest feature discernible” appears to be not well suited to describing the fidelity limits of nonlinear ghost-imaging systems. Our results suggest that the drop in reconstruction accuracy stemming from non-ideal detection conditions is complex and not driven by the attenuation of high-frequency spatial components (i.e., blurring) as in standard imaging. On the technological side, we further show how achieving efficient optical-to-terahertz conversion in extremely short propagation lengths is crucial regarding imaging performance, and we propose low-bandgap semiconductors as a practical framework to obtain THz emission from quasi-2D structures, i.e., structure in which the interaction occurs on a deeply subwavelength scale. Our results establish a comprehensive theoretical and experimental framework for the development of a new generation of terahertz hyperspectral imaging devices.

The transient terahertz (THz) pulse with high peak field has become an important tool for matter manipulation, enabling many applications such as nonlinear spectroscopy, particle acceleration, and high harmonic generation. Among the widely used THz generation techniques, optical rectification in lithium niobate (LN) has emerged as a powerful method to achieve high fields at low THz frequencies, suitable to exploring novel nonlinear phenomena in condensed matter systems. In this review, we focus on introducing single- to few-cycle THz generation in LN, including the basic principles, techniques, latest developments, and current limitations. We will first discuss the phase matching requirements of LN, which leads to Cherenkov-like radiation, and the tilted pulse front (TPF) technique. Emphasis will be put on the TPF technique, which has been shown to improve THz generation efficiency, but still has many limitations. Different geometries used to produce continuous and discrete TPF will be systematically discussed. We summarize the advantages and limitations of current techniques and future trends.

Despite the growing interest in nonlinear devices and components for light by light control in the terahertz range, there is a shortage of such materials and media used for these purposes. Here, we present the calculated values of low-inertia nonlinear refractive index coefficient for electro-optical crystals used in THz time-domain spectroscopy systems such as ZnSe, ZnTe, CdTe, GaP, and LiNbO3. The medium parameters affecting the cubic nonlinearity of the vibrational nature increase in the range of 0.5–1 THz have been determined. Comparison of theoretical calculations with known experimental results confirm the theoretical model as well as our analysis of media parameter influence on the cubic nonlinearity. In terms of applications, results obtained open up new perspectives for studying various materials in the THz frequency range.

In this work, we propose to design a liquid crystal–based modular and extendable platform of cutting-edge optical technologies for studying materials based on the analysis of polarization and wavefront of light in the wavelength range of 10–50 μm, which is considered to work even in the longer wavelengths range. This platform will be driven by the future THz-FEL source TerRa@BriXSinO that produces high power radiation in THz-range from 6 THz up to 30 THz (Mid-/Far-IR). The lack of optical infrastructures in this range has been tackled by fabricating liquid crystal–based geometric phase components that have been specifically designed for this purpose. This is in order to optimally exploit all the source’s potential for maximum accuracy and efficiency in determining polarization- and wavefront-sensitive properties of materials. We present an overview of a few experiments for characterizing bulk inhomogeneities, dielectric anisotropy, surface roughness, cracks, impact damages, and stress and strain effects with special emphasis on non-destructive tests on composite structures. The tools for wavefront shaping developed within our platform will be exploited to add a further degree of freedom, i.e., orbital angular momentum, to nonlinear optics techniques, such as Terahertz Hyper-Raman spectroscopy, for investigating chiral agents’ properties.

Recently we have demonstrated a new nonlinear optical effect in the THz interval of frequencies. The latter is based on the use of femtosecond optical pulses and intense, sub-ps, broadband terahertz (THz) pulses to generate a THz-optical four- and five-wave mixing in the investigated material. The spectrum of the generated signal is resolved in time and wavelength and displays two pronounced frequency sidebands, Stokes and anti-Stokes, close to the optical second harmonic central frequency 2 ω L , where ω L is the optical central frequency of the fundamental beam, thus resembling the spectrum of standard hyper-Raman scattering, and hence we named this effect ‘THz hyper-Raman’—THYR. We applied this technique to several crystalline materials, including α-quartz and gallium selenide. In the first material, we find that the THYR technique brings spectroscopic information on a large variety of low-energy excitations that include polaritons and phonons far from the Γ-point, which are difficult to study with standard optical techniques. In the second example, we show that this new tool offers some advantages in detecting ultra-broadband THz pulses. In this paper we review these two recent results, showing the potentialities of this new THz technique.

We report on a time-domain polarimetry (TDP) system for generating and detecting broadband terahertz (THz) waves of different polarization angles. We generate THz waves from two-color laser filaments and determine their polarization states with a detection bandwidth of up to 8 THz using a spinning gallium phosphide crystal. The polarization of THz emission can be controlled by adjusting the position and tilt angle of the β-barium borate crystal. We characterize the precision of this system for polarimetric measurements at fixed time delay to be [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] for complete time-domain waveforms. We also demonstrate the feasibility of our TDP system by measuring broadband optical properties of anisotropic samples in both transmission and reflection geometries. The THz-TDP technique can be easily integrated in conventional THz time-domain spectroscopy setups using nonlinear crystal detectors.

We present the first direct studies of photoinduced Cooper-pair breaking and subsequent superconducting state recovery dynamics by means of femtosecond time-resolved optical-pump terahertz probe spectroscopy focusing on the superconducting state recovery dynamics in MgB 2. The superconducting state recovery proceeds on the timescale of several hundred picoseconds and shows a strong temperature dependence. In particular, upon increasing the temperature the recovery time first decreases, reaches a minimum, followed by a quasi-divergence upon further increasing the temperature towards Tc. Moreover, the recovery time shows virtually no intensity dependence, even though the photoexcitation fluence is changed by over an order of magnitude. This suggests that pair recovery is goverend by a phonon-bottleneck mechanism, where the lifetime of high energy phonons (ℏω > 2Δ) is governed by their anharmonicity.

Purpose of this paper is the development and creation of the magnetic metasurfaces with metallic inclusions operating both in the microwave and terahertz frequency ranges. Methods. The Maxwell’s equations and the expressions for the effective medium parameters are used to build the analytical models of the magnetic metasurfaces based on either a ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AFM) dielectric matrix, containing a two-dimensional periodic structure of thin metal (non-magnetic) wires surrounded by insulators. Numerical simulation of such structures operating in the microwave range is carried out using the MaxLLG software package. The magnetron sputtering, liquid etching, optical lithography, and lift-off photolithography are used to create bicomponent magnetic metasurfaces, consisting of two magnetic materials with very different values of magnetization. The study of linear and nonlinear characteristics of the bicomponent magnetic metasurfaces is carried out using the methods of microwave and Brillouin spectroscopy. Results. Based on the developed analytical model of the magnetic metasurface with metallic (nonmagnetic) inclusions it is shown that the FM metasurface possesses properties of a left-handed medium in a microwave range and the AFM metasurface possesses similar properties in a terahertz range. In the last case, the material parameters of the AFM metasurface are twice negative in two frequency bands. For the magnetic metasurfaces with metallic magnetic inclusions, the formation of absorption bands in the spectrum of a traveling magnetostatic surface spin wave due to the resonant properties of the inclusions has been established. In the nonlinear regime, the effect of nonreciprocal parametric three-wave resonance was obtained. Conclusion. The results presented in the paper demonstrate a number of physical phenomena that are observed only in the magnetic metasurfaces with metallic (nonmagnetic and magnetic) inclusions.
