Texte intégralTheoretical and experimental implications in the theory of special relativity resulting from the assumption of synchronization criterion (called absolute) other than the standard, are investigated. The choice of the absolute synchronization is justified by considerations of epistemological status of phenomena such as length contraction and time dilation. The absolute synchronization provides a different interpretation of the theory and is an extension of the scope of special relativity as it can be implemented even in accelerated frames of reference. Therefore it is possible to treat in a unified way the phenomena in both inertial and accelerated frame. The introduction of the absolute synchronization implies a modification of the Lorentz transformations. A characteristic of these new transformations (called inertial) is that the transformation of time is independent of the spatial coordinates . The inertial transformations are obtained in the general case between two systems having (absolute) velocity u1 and u2 in any orientation . It is shown that the inertial transformations can have a group structure if unphysical superluminal frames are considered too. The Born rigid motion of an extended body is analyzed by applying the absolute synchronization. Transformations for electromagnetic fields and the equations of these fields (substituting Maxwell's equations) are derived on the basis of inertial transformations. It is shown that these equations contain solutions in the absence of charges that propagate through space as waves generally anisotropic as provided by the inertial transformations in the propagation of light. The application of electromagnetic theory to accelerated systems show the existence of phenomena never observed before. These phenomena, although not in contradiction with standard relativity, force the interpretation of the theory. An experiment in which one of these phenomena is measurable is proposed and described in this thesis.

Texte intégralIn this work we generalize the standard theory of cosmological perturbations to the case of homogeneous and anisotropic universes described by a Bianchi I spacetime metric. As an application of this theory we investigate the predictions of an inflationary anisotropic phase, both at the classical and quantum level. After discussing the evolution of the background spacetime, we solve and quantize the perturbation equations in order to predict the power spectra of the curvature perturbations and gravity waves at the end of inflation. Our results show that the main features of an early anisotropic phase are: (1) a dependence of the spectra on the direction of the modes, (2) a coupling between curvature perturbations and gravity waves, and (3) the fact that the two gravity waves polarisations do not share the same spectrum on large scales. All these effects are significant only on large scales and die out on small scales where isotropy is recovered. Finally, our results depend on a characteristic scale that can, but a priori does not have to, be tuned to some observable scale.

The rst-order Du n-Kemmer-Petiau (DKP) formalism describes spin-0 and spin-1 particles and has been used to analyze relativistic interactions of hadrons with nuclei as an alternative to their conventional second-order Klein-Gordon and Proca counterparts. We present the general DKP equation, discuss conditions on the interactions which lead to a conserved current and e ects of parity, charge-conjugation and time-reversal transformations. Adopting a speci c representation for the DKP matrices, we set up the equations for the components of the DKP spinor in the presence of scalar and vector interactions. We point out that the space component of the nonminimal vector potential can not be absorbed into the spinor. We show that the space component of the nonminimal vector potential could be irrelevant for the formation of bound states for potentials vanishing at in nity but its presence is a sine qua non condition for con nement. Some aplications in unidimensional potentials are used to show that Klein's paradox never appears in the case of a nonminimal vector potential, contrary to what occurs for a minimally coupled vector potential. An apparent paradox related to the localization of bosons in the presence of strong potentials is solved by introducing the concepts of e ective mass and e ective Compton wavelength

Texte intégralThis work assumes that investigate the language and thoughts involved in scientific processes of creating, in the scientist process of interpretation facing the nature phenomena, can reveal how to work the science in the classroom so that the epistemological features of this knowledge are taken into account. Taking this into account, our work takes an epistemological perspective. When we think in high school, in particular, we have the indication that one of the difficulties faced by students is related to the formalization of scientific knowledge. This is even stronger in physics, which mathematics plays important role. But what is the epistemological role of mathematics to physics? The scientist is able to physically interpret nature only using formal languages and thoughts, especially structured by mathematics? Our hypothesis is that the answer to this question is negative. We find the psychologist Jerome Bruner ideas a way to send our discussion. From his ideas, and our longing to investigate whether thoughts and languages that are not strictly formal play an important role in building physics, raised the question: What is the role of narrative and mathematics in physical construction? To outline a possible answer to this question, we take as the context of our research some \"chapters\" of the construction of the General Theory of Relativity. Our investigation has shown that important thought experiments in the development of this theory were built from the narrative and mathematical thoughts. We understand that these two modes of thought presented in a complementary manner in the context studied.

Although it treats gravity classically, the Quantum Field Theory in Curved Spacetimes (QFTCS) makes remarkable predictions about de behavior of quantum fields in the presence of gravitational fields. However, these striking discoveries raises several issues. The development of a theory at the interface between the theory of relativity, quantum mechanics and information theory could not only shed new light on such questions as well as allow us to uncover new low-energy quantum gravity effects. However, relativity affects quantum information theory in a highly non-trivial way already in Minkowski spacetime. Therefore, a careful analysis of these effects in the context of special relativity is needed. For this purpose, we begin investigating how the movement of the spin and polarization detectors influences the Bell inequalities using spin 1/2 fermions and photons, respectively. Then, we use the Holevo bound to investigate quantum communication channels when the parts that trade information have a relative motion. As a natural development, we use quantum field theory and, in particular, the Unruh effect to analyze several aspects of quantum information theory. This enables us to predict the behavior of qubits in the vicinity of a Schwarzschild black hole

We investigate initially the problem of obtaining a modified newtonian gravitation in the case of General Relativity theory. Following, we find a general solution with spherical symmetry for a weak gravitational field in the context of Brans-Dicke theory. This solution is independent of any coordinate condition. Then, for a convenient choice of the function f(r) in Brans-Dicke metric, we exhibit a modified formula to newtonian gravity, which can describe gravity in a small length scale. We discuss the results in comparison with the case of General Relativity

Abstract: In Euclidean space, cyclic deformations of quasi-rigid bodies can lead to net global rotations even though they satisfy, at each moment, the angular momentum conservation law (the falling cat problem is an example). In curved spaces, cyclic changes in the body shape can also lead to rotations, but also to global translations. This phenomenon is known as the swimming effect. In a recent work, Avron and Kenneth developed a formalism to describe this phenomenon in the non-relativistic context [Avron JE, Kenneth O, New J. Phys. 8, 68 (2006)], which may be used to calculate the net displacement caused by an infinitesimal cycle of deformations of a given body. This displacement is then related, for small swimmers, to the curvature of the ambient space. In the present work, we propose a new formulation for the swimming effect in terms of principal bundles and connections. The configuration space of the system is described by the total space of a principal bundle, whose base space is given by the space of shapes of the body and whose structural group is (essentially) given by the isometries of the ambient manifold. A given deformation cycleof the body then corresponds to a loop in the base space. By defining a connection in this bundle which conveys the physical conservation laws of the system, the corresponding physical motion of the body is then given by the horizontal lift of this curve in the base space, while the net displacement of the body is given by the holonomy associated with this loop. As a result we obtain, in a systematical way, the displacement generated by arbitrary deformation cycles and we get, for each instant of time, the time evolution of the system analytically

Texte intégralWe investigate bouncing solutions in the framework of a nonsingular gravity model of Brandenberger, Mukhanov and Sornborger. We show that a spatially at universe lled with ordinary matter undergoing a phase of contraction reaches a stage of minimal expansion factor before bouncing in a regular way to reach the expanding phase. The expansion can be connected to the usual radiation- and matter-dominated epochs before reaching a nal expanding de Sitter phase. In general relativity, a bounce can only take place provided that the spatial sections are positively curved, a fact that has been shown to translate into a constraint on the characteristic duration of the bounce. In our model, on the other hand, a bounce can occur also in the absence of spatial curvature, which means that the time scale for the bounce can be made arbitrarily short or long. Although the model we investigate is fourth order in the derivatives of the metric (and therefore unstable vis-à-vis the perturbations), this generic bounce dynamics should extend to string-motivated nonsingular models which can accomodate a spatially at bounce.

In this disssertation we are concerned with Nordström s scalar gravity theory, one of the first attempts to formulate a relativistic theory of gravitation. We start be describing the theory in its original formulation given by Nordström. We then proceed to show how Nordström s approach is equivalent to a metric theory of gravity which regards gravity as a manifestation of spacetime curvature, a result first obtained by Einstein and Fokker in 1914. We exlore this formal equivalence between the two approaches to derive Nordström s predictions of some observed phenomena, such as Mercury s perihelium and the time delay of the light. finally we consider a third approach which makes use of Weyl geometry through its concept of gauge transformations. We then show that one can regard both Nordström s and Einstein-Fokker s framework as equivalent to a theory formulated to a theory formulated in minkowski spacetime in which the gravitational field is encoded in a non-trivial affine connection.

Abstract: The present work is devoted to a systematic study of the representations of the groups HOM(2) and SIM(2), which are subgroups of the Lorentz group. Theories with symmetries given by these subgroups are known to preserve the constancy of the speed of light, this fact being referred as Very Special Relativity. It is shown that there are nitedimensional reducible representations of HOM(2) and SIM(2) that are not completely reducible, and thus cannot be obtained entirely from irreducible representations. These are obtained directly from the representations of the Lie algebras hom(2) and sim(2), using the knowledge of the universal covering groups of HOM(2) and SIM(2), which are also presented in the text

Abstract: In this thesis we study quantum correlations and the effects of the environment in two-qubit systems. Our analysis is divided in two main aspects: (i) study of the quantum correlations hierarchy, and (ii) analysis of the flow of correlations in tripartite systems. For the study of hierarchy, we analyze the following correlations: generalized quantum discord, entanglement, EPR steering, and Bell nonlocality for X states with maximal marginals. In order to include steering in this analysis, we propose a quantifier for general two-qubit systems in scenarios of two- and three-measurements per site, based on steering inequalities well established. Besides that, we study the correlations robustness under noisy channels, finding a chronology of sudden deaths and sudden births. We analyze the flow of correlations in two different contexts. In the first, we investigate the information dynamics between the parts of tripartite systems through results involving the monogamy of mutual information. In particular, we find a typical scenario in which local information tends to be converted in delocalized information. Moreover, we calculate analytically a quantity capable of revealing favorable regimes for non-Markovianity in our model. In a second analysis, based on the exact dynamics of a system of two-qubit and the environment, given by an usual thermal bath of harmonic oscillators, we derive separability and entanglement criteria between an initial X state and the environment, not finding any relation between the lost of entanglement within the system of two-qubit and the build up of entanglement between the system and the environment.

In the recent past years, in virtue of the increasing complexity of string theories as candidates to the unification of the fundamental interactions of Nature, it has grown a renewed interest in the quantum theory of higher spins as a natural covariant formalism to accommodating the particle spectra in the Standard Model and quantum theories of gravitation, as well as their supersymmetric counterparts. In this dissertation, we present a sistematic review of the formalism of the theory of higher spins, grounded on the Poincar´e group, which corresponds to the symmetry group of relativistic quantum mechanics. We study the constructs of Bargmann-Wigner, Weinberg and Majorana, leading to wave equations for particles of arbitrary spins, and examined, in particular, the cases of spins 1/2 and 1, focusing particularly on the DKP equation for massive bosons of spin zero and unity as well as on the equation proposed by Majorana and Oppenheimer (MO) for the photon. In this context, we propose a linear equation similar to MO, called PMO, corresponding to the Proca equations and investigate its algebraic structure. Also, we examined the nonrelativistic limit of DKP and PMO equations through the Foldy and Wouthuysen transformations, in the scenarios involving free particles and the coupling with an electromagnetic external field.

Due to the existence of an invariant length at the Planck scale, Einstein special relativity breaks down at that scale. A possible solution to this problem is arguably to replace the Poincare-invariant Einstein special relativity by a de Sitter invariant special relativity. Such replacement produces concomitant changes in all relativistic theories, including of course general relativity, which changes to what is called de Sitter modified general relativity, whose gravitational field equation is the de Sitter modified Einstein equation. A crucial property of this theory is that both the background de Sitter curvature and the gravitational dynamical curvature turns out to be included in the same curvature tensor. This means that the cosmological term Λ no longer explicitly appears in Einstein equation, and is consequently not restricted to be constant. In the first part of the thesis, a new definition for black hole entropy is defined. This new notion of entropy is strongly attached to the local symmetry, given the fact to be composed of two parts: the usual translational-related entropy plus an additional piece related to the proper conformal transformation. Also, it is obtained the de Sitter modified Schwarzschild solution, and using this solution we explore the consequences for the definition of entropy, as well as for the thermodynamics of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter system. In the second part the Newtonian limit of the de Sitter modified Einstein equation is obtained, and the ensuing Newtonian Friedmann equations are show to provide a good account of the dark energy content of the present-day universe. Finally, by using the same Newtonian limit, the circular velocity of stars around the galactic center is studied. It is shown that the de Sitter modified Newtonian force, which becomes effective only in the Keplerian region of the galaxy, could possibly explain the flat rotation curve of galaxies without necessity of supposing the existence of dark matter.

Texte intégralWe analyzes, in particular, the stability of tracker solutions. Our analyzes is global, based in the existence of Lyapunov functions for fixed points previously identified in the literature and studied in the local linear regime. The methodology developed in the cosmological context is applied to find superaccelerated solutions, defined when the equation of state is very negative ( = p/ < -1), and to obtain the attraction basin around the stable fixed point. Based in these results, we propose a model free of classical and/or quantum instabilities, capable of describing the recently discovered fase of accelerated expantion of the Universe, including the possible superaccelerated regime slightly favored by the available observational data.

Texte intégralThe question of the correspondence between quantum and classical systems is an issue since the beginnings of quantum mechanics and it seems like a natural question. Also since the start of quantum mechanics coherent states were used to answer this sort of question, since they are, in a sense, the quantum states closest to states that describe classical systems. Following the results of Hepp, who showed the correspondence for the case of non-relativistic quantum mechanics as well as for relativistic Bosonic fields, we show the correspondence between free Bosonic field in a de Sitter space-time and the solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation in that same space-time. After introducing the relevant concepts and the construction of the algebra that describes free Bosonic systems in a globally hyperbolic space-time, we construct coherent states for CCR algebras in Weyls form, and we prove the semi-classical limit for a region close to the origin (or, for a fixed time, in the whole de Sitter space-time). We also prove that this limit is independent of the vacuum statewhich might not be unique.

Texte intégralThis master\'s thesis deals with the effect of particle creation by the curvature of space-time according to the point of view of scattering theory, discussing when such interpretation is possible by means of an S-matrix and obtaining its expression in those cases. The first chapter treats, superficially, some concepts of general relativity and quantum field theory in plane and curved space-times that are imperative to understand the construction of the S-matrix. The subject of this chapter is covered in the work of Wald, Parker, and Birrell, and follows closely the work of Bar, Wald and Hawking, when treats concepts specifically from general relativity, and from Penrose and Rindler, when talking about the spinor structure of space-time. The construction of the S-matrix is made in the second chapter, along the lines of the work of Wald. The third chapter presents some examples that bring some light on the creation of particles in specific cases of expanding space-times. This study let us verify that an S-matrix formulation is tenable, on globally hyperbolic asymptotic stationary curved space-times, if both quantum theories in the distant past and distant future are unitary equivalent, the relation of both regions is made by Bogolyubov transformations by means of everywhere defined bounded operators and that those operators satisfy the Hilbert-Schmidt condition. In those cases we derive the expression of the S-matrix for the Klein-Gordon and Dirac fields. Also we obtain the number of particles created and the probability of find particles in a particular mode, with let one make an analogy with the black body radiation, which is a fundamental step in the direction of understanding interesting phenomena in quantum field theory in curved space-times, like the Hawking radiation and particle creation in the early universe.

Texte intégralThis work is the narrative of a didactic experience of application of a module that addressed a topic of Modern and Contemporary Physics, the Special Theory of Relativity, in High School. The proposal was applied in a private school located in the county of Arroio do Meio, RS, for one group of third grade of regular secondary level, under the theoretical framework of cognitive theory of Jean William Fritz Piaget (1896-1980) and under the epistemological framework of Thomas Samuel Kuhn (1922-1996). It describes the planning of classes, the implementation of the proposal and the results obtained from its application in the classroom in the form of an extracurricular course. The way the module has been designed and the level of depth that was achieved is discussed throughout the text, which also provide a review of the literature in which importance of inclusion of Modern and Contemporary Physics in High School curriculum is discussed. The results indicate that it is possible teach subjects of Modern and Contemporary Physics in regular education. The results also indicated that students enjoyed and showed willingness to learn current issues and the effort to introduce small curriculum updates is valid and needs to be encouraged as one of the possible alternatives to achieve the improvement of teaching quality in basic education. At the end, an educational product in form of text, guidance and motivation to physics teachers is presented.

Abstract: Great part of chemical and physical phenomena can only be understood under the relativistic quantum mechanics framework, mainly the chemistry of the heavier elements. For example, the catalytic propertiers of platinum are in the most part due to relativistic effects. These relativistic effects are more intense in elements beyond atomic number 103, elements known as super heavy elements or transactinides. In this work, we investigated the chemical bound between the chemical element of highest atomic number that has been sintetized, the Uuo with z=118, and carbonyls. Our results, despite the fact that the new element Uuo is located at noble gas family, suggest that its chemical properties are probably different from the other elements of the same group and a possible break of periodic properties.

In this work an investigation of the features of the Aristotelian concept of time can be found in the conception of time in modern physics, namely the theory of relativity , for which a comparison is made with the principal takes concepts and theories of time from Aristotle to the present, studying the theories of time involved in the evolution of this concept. We will see how the concept of time has evolved through Newton's, Leibniz's and Kant's contributions before finally dwelling upon the concept of time we find in Einstein's relativity theories - both special and general -, as well as in all those notions involved in this concept, such as movement, matter, space, infinite or instant, among others.

Great part of chemical and physical phenomena can only be understood under the relativistic quantum mechanics framework, mainly the chemistry of the heavier elements.

Texte intégralIn this thesis, we discuss several subjects connected with the framework of GR, in order to characterize astrophysical compact objects. The main purpose is to provide simple models describing gravitational fields generated by isolated compact bodies in stationary rotation with extremely simple internal structure, such as neutron stars. The main tools used for our analysis are exact solutions of Einstein fields equations, which have been approached in different ways. In particular, we use the formalism of junction conditions for finding new solutions of Einstein equations in presence of matter by matching metrics representing two shells of a compact body. With the same aim, we introduce the Newmann-Janis Algorithm, a solution generating technique which provides metrics of reduced symmetries from symmetric ones. Finally, an exact solution of Einstein's field equations, known as Einstein Static Universe is studied in the framework of Cosmology. Our purpose is to study the stability properties of this solution focusing on the intriguing possibility of finding static solutions in open cosmological models (k = -1). [edited by author]

In physics is very familiar employment of vectors. These can be seen, the geometric point of view, as straight segments oriented. However, certain quantities are better represented by other objects with geometrical features than with vectors. Such objects are represented by fragments of oriented planes, which cannot be determined by vectors, unless we are in three dimensional space. Geometric or Clifford algebra can be treated as a generalization of vector algebra, and consists of a powerful formalism for the physical description of nature. Thus, we propose in this work, to build strategies to introduce the Clifford algebra as modeler physical concepts of the Theory of Special Relativity and from the modeled concepts, develop educational material for teaching physics in the light of the conception of learning Ausubel.
