Résumé :
The penetration of DG in electrical distribution systems has many benefits. The paper highlights the impact of DG penetration at different load centers and different operating conditions in a distribution feeder. The impact of DG penetration on feeder voltage profile that depends on the size and location of DG in the system is illustrated. Mitigating methods are used to reduce the effect of voltage disturbances. Economic assessment studies are used for assisting in the economic choice of mitigating methods. Economical aspects of distribution systems connected to DGs are considered through the analysis of the life cycle cost of these distribution generation sources. Maintenance strategies are illustrated and discussed to keep these sources always ready for operation regarding minimization of maintenance cost. Technical and economical assessments depend on the availability of historical data for disturbances cost including damages and cost of disturbance mitigation using different mitigation methods. These data are difficult to be available for different types of loads. Therefore, load indices, K1, K2, and K3, are proposed in this paper for the different loads as referring it to reference load has available data to overcome the challenge of data shortage. Also, a techno-economic assessment index F is proposed for the assessment of the impact of mitigating device improving cost and its feasibility. PSCAD/EMTDC simulation software package is used in this analysis. The results show that the proposed techno-economic assessment methodology facilitates the decision of choosing the mitigation method for power quality problems and to overcome the challenge of data shortage in the techno-economic assessment.

Résumé :
It is widely recognized that Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) may be playing a key role in decarbonising industrial and power generation processes and meeting net zero emission targets by 2050. However, the successful large-scale development of CCS is still hindered by a wide lack of reliable techno-economic and environmental assessment methodologies. In the present work, a CFD code developed by UCL Chemical Engineering, named PipeTech, was first used to simulate CO2 pipeline transport performances with respect to variations of main design and operational parameters. Based on these results, a multi-objective optimisation methodology for CCS pipelines is proposed to minimise economic and environmental footprints while reliably simulating fluid flow behaviour. Then, the Decision Maker (DM) is supposed to select one or more trade-offs that best suit his preferences. Three potentially most effective solutions were determined by applying the mathematical Level Diagrams technique. Uncertainty affecting CO2 transport cost modelling is assessed by employing a Monte Carlo simulation approach, which also provides the DM with a probabilistic tool to compare the different alternatives. Lastly, a quantitative methodology is applied to convert multi-criteria optimisation results in impact indicators weighting economic and environmental issues. Results were then compared with those given by the single minimisation of two additional indices. These are presented as a “CO2 avoided transport cost”, which considers an apparent transported flow rate decreased by emitted GHG expressed as CO2 equivalents, and as a “market-based transport cost”, which applies a carbon pricing to the greenhouse gas emissions according to carbon markets. Overall, this approach provided a route to flexibly weigh environmental and economic concerns according to DM preferences, whereas the two aggregated indices give a lower visibility to the environmental footprint of the system.

Minimizing the impacts caused by climate change imply the replacement of fossil fuels low greenhouse gas emitting energies. The hydrogen energy vector is forecasted to contribute to decarbonizing a part of industry and the uses of transport and mobility. Yet hydrogen is produced nowadays almost exclusively from fossil fuels and is dedicated to industrial applications. This work focuses on the production of hydrogen from a renewable resource, wood chips a by-product of the forest industry. Due to the nature of the fuel considered, small plant units are chosen (a limited supply area, short-distance transport of the resource). Pyrogasification processes transform this combustible into a synthesis gas (CO, H₂, CH₄, CO₂) under the effect of heat input (pyrolysis) or an oxidizing agent (gasification) consisting of oxygen and water vapor. To evaluate the relevance of these pyrogasification processes, they are studied and modeled with Aspen Plus®. Particular attention is put on the synthesis gas cleaning process. This syngas contains tars which should be reduced for the ultimate use of the gas. For this purpose, a partial oxidation unit is envisaged and modeled from a detailed radical kinetic mechanism. The purified gas can then be enriched in H₂ with Catalytic Reforming and Water Gas Shift reactors. The separation of the hydrogen produced is another crucial step and conventional technologies are not always suited to the gas produced. When a single technology cannot achieve the separation, a hybrid process combining membrane and adsorption technologies is adopted. The heat produced by the process is recovered in a heating network. In order to evaluate the relevance of these options, both from a financial and sustainable development point of view, a techno-economic analysis is carried out as well as a life cycle analysis. These processes clearly offer a virtuous alternative for the production of different vectors: hydrogen, heat and even bio-char. But under current market conditions, these industries are unable to reach financial equilibrium without public support

Résumé :
Much literature is available on fungal lipids and their capability as a renewable oil platform for alternate fuels, chemicals, and food products. Microbial oils will not displace all edible oils soon, given techno-economical hurdles in commercialization. However, continued research & development can flatten the curve of deforestation and land-use impacts associated with cultivating these crops. To better understand how oleaginous yeasts and fungi could alleviate the challenges related to the energy-environment-food nexus, it becomes critical to investigate their potential environmental impacts quantitively compared to other feedstocks. Life cycle analysis or assessment (LCA) is a standard tool used for this purpose. LCA studies are not being conducted on a broader scale for fungus-derived oils than their phototrophic algal counterparts. The different stages in the life cycle of fungal lipid production that can be analyzed for environmental implications include cultivation and fermentation, oil extraction; further downstream processing; and end-use. The LCA method for fungal lipid-derived biofuel production systems should cover the main sustainability concerns of biofuel production systems: energy efficiency, climate change, and land occupation. With the scope of microbial oil applications expanding beyond non-fuel encompassing food, supplements, and medicines, their subsequent environmental implications need to be investigated. Further work is required in this area. There are significant knowledge gaps in life cycle inventory and impact assessment information for non-fuel applications.

Résumé :
As industries push for continuous technological innovation to boost their competitiveness, the need to balance techno-economical goals with emerging societal needs is now more pressing than ever. Inspired by the novel paradigm of Industry 5.0, we aim to place human physical and cognitive needs at the center of the production process, introducing proactive and human-aware robots capable of collaboration as co-workers. Although Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC) has successfully permeated different industrial sectors, they still have a relatively limited role as agents that share the human workspace mostly executing pre-programmed actions. Based on this gap a research project is ongoing, including researchers in Ergonomics and Robotics. The current article presents the first stage related to the design of a workstation prototype that emulates industrial tasks and will allow us to explore the different HRC scenarios. The selection of the assembly task was supported by ergonomic assessment (Rapid Upper Limb Assessment), and questionnaires focused on the workers' psychophysical and cognitive overload perceived. Then, the CoppeliaSim simulation software was used to allow us to accurately reproduce both the visual and the physical aspects of the prototype, including the model of a humanoid abstract avatar. In addition, a set of ergonomic and safety requirements were defined to support the human-centered design of the prototype. The results of this research phase will be important for the next steps of our project and for other researchers/industrial practitioners focused on the human-centered design of HRC scenarios.
