Résumé :
Abstract When studying the use of assistive robots in home environments, and especially how such robots can be personalised to meet the needs of the resident, key concerns are issues related to behaviour verification, behaviour interference and safety. Here, personalisation refers to the teaching of new robot behaviours by both technical and non-technical end users. In this article, we consider the issue of behaviour interference caused by situations where newly taught robot behaviours may affect or be affected by existing behaviours and thus, those behaviours will not or might not ever be executed. We focus in particular on how such situations can be detected and presented to the user. We describe the human–robot behaviour teaching system that we developed as well as the formal behaviour checking methods used. The online use of behaviour checking is demonstrated, based on static analysis of behaviours during the operation of the robot, and evaluated in a user study. We conducted a proof-of-concept human–robot interaction study with an autonomous, multi-purpose robot operating within a smart home environment. Twenty participants individually taught the robot behaviours according to instructions they were given, some of which caused interference with other behaviours. A mechanism for detecting behaviour interference provided feedback to participants and suggestions on how to resolve those conflicts. We assessed the participants’ views on detected interference as reported by the behaviour teaching system. Results indicate that interference warnings given to participants during teaching provoked an understanding of the issue. We did not find a significant influence of participants’ technical background. These results highlight a promising path towards verification and validation of assistive home companion robots that allow end-user personalisation.

Résumé :
MOOCs attract a large number of users with unknown diversity in terms of motivation, ability, and goals. To understand more about learners in a MOOC, the authors explored clusters of user clickstream patterns in a highly technical MOOC, Nanophotonic Modelling through the algorithm k-means++. Five clusters of user behaviour emerged: Fully Engaged, Consistent Viewers, One-Week Engaged, Two-Week Engaged, and Sporadic users. Assessment behaviours and scores are then examined within each cluster, and found different between clusters. Nonparametric statistical test, Kruskal-Wallis yielded a significant difference between user behaviour in each cluster. To make accurate inferences about what occurs in a MOOC, a first step is to understand the patterns of user behaviour. The latent characteristics that contribute to user behaviour must be explored in future research. Keywords: MOOCs, Learning Analytics, Assessment

Behaviour modification refers to the techniques used to try and decrease or increase a particular type of behaviour or reaction. This might sound very technical, but it is used very frequently by all of us. Parents use this to teach their children right from wrong. Therapists use it to promote healthy behaviours in their patients. The purpose behind behaviour modification is not to understand why or how a particular behaviour started. Instead, it only focuses on changing behaviour, and there are different methods used to accomplish it.

Résumé :
The significance of professionally-relevant behaviour of scrub nurses for teamwork in the operating room is increasing, as proven by the studies carried out over the last decades worldwide. Non-technical skills include both social and cognitive elements. Specific behaviour evaluation system can be used to identify, assess and improve non-technical skills of scrub nurses. Improvement of non-technical skills helps reduce staff errors in the intraoperative period. The objective of the research is to find out whether there are statistically significant differences between scrub nurses’ self-assessment of their non-technical skills, their implementation and surgeons' expectations. Demographic questionnaire, interview and Scrub Practitioners List of Intraoperative Non-technical Skills (SPLINT) were used in this study. Scrub nurses tend to engage in minimal communication and only a half of surgeons show expectations for exchange of thoughts and ideas from scrub nurses. This shows that the exchange of information between physicians and scrub nurses is generally insufficient. Surgical team members pay more attention to signals given by the surgical team and surgical process and rarely report on perception of signals given by medical equipment and a patient. Such data may be indicative of insufficient attention to a patient’s safety during the surgery. Key words. Non-technical skills, scrub nurse, scrub nurse’s skills

Résumé :
Evaluating practice design is an important component of supporting skill acquisition and improving team-sport performance. Constraint manipulations, including creating a numerical advantage or disadvantage during training, may be implemented by coaches to influence aspects of player or team behaviour. This study presents methods to evaluate the interaction between technical, tactical and physical behaviours of professional Australian Football players during numerical advantage and disadvantage conditions within a small-sided game. During each repetition of the game, team behaviour was manually annotated to determine: repetition duration, disposal speed, total disposals, efficiency, and disposal type. Global Positioning System devices were used to quantify tactical (surface area) and physical (velocity and high intensity running) variables. A rule association and classification tree analysis were undertaken. The top five rules for each constraint manipulation had confidence levels between 73.3% and 100%, which identified the most frequent behaviour interactions. Specifically, four advantage rules involved high surface area and medium high intensity running indicating the attacking team’s frequent movement solution within this constraint. The classification tree included three behaviour metrics: surface area, velocity 1SD and repetition duration, and identified two unique movement solutions for each constraint manipulation. These results may inform if player behaviour is achieving the desired outcomes of a constraint manipulation, which could help practitioners determine the efficacy of a training task. Further, critical constraint values provided by the models may guide practitioners in their ongoing constraint manipulations to facilitate skill acquisition. Sport practitioners can adapt these methods to evaluate constraint manipulations and inform practice design.

Résumé :
General nonlinear stability equations of naturally curved and pretwisted slender elastic rods are derived by means of a technically heuristic approach. The derived equations take account of such effects as deformation prior to loss of stability, shearing deformation and the influence of loading behaviour. Through systematic simplifications stability equations of planar arches and straight rods are derived and are shown to be in agreement with the corresponding classical equations. Some aspects of loading behaviour and instability modes, as related to conservative and non-conservative nature of the problem, are also studied.

Résumé :
Courtship behaviour of tortoises includes biting, ramming, chasing, same-sex sexual behaviour, and it commonly is excessive in European tortoise species kept as pets. As a result, males are kept individually. To assess the effect of orchiectomy on excessive courtship behaviour in European tortoises, 50 tortoises (Testudo graeca, T hermanni and T marginata) underwent endoscopically assisted orchiectomy from April through September 2013 to 2017. Statistical analyses were performed in relation to species, body mass, testicular size and season and owners were invited to fill out a follow-up questionnaire. Body mass of the tortoises ranged from 334 to 2645 g (mean 1056 g) and the age from 5 to estimated 60 years. Testicular length ranged from 1.4 to 7.0 cm (mean 2.7 cm) and testicular mass from 0.6 to 12.6 g (mean 3.9 g). A complete or partial reduction (allowing group-housing) of the excessive courtship behaviour was noted by 95 per cent of owners and 59 per cent of the owners reported a noticeable change of behaviour within a month of surgery. Given the seasonal variation in testicular size, the best period for castrations in male European tortoises is shortly after brumation (April, May), when testes are proportionally smaller.

Résumé :
In technical textile engineering, macro-level phenomenological modelling effectively describes the material’s highly nonlinear behaviour. However, existing material laws concentrate on the normal stiffness in the orthotropic yarns and simplify the shear effect because of the two orders of magnitude difference between shear and normal stiffness. This article introduces an improved phenomenological model that includes nonlinear shear behaviour, and it determines the material parameters with a previously applied data fitting method for exponential functions. The nonlinear shear behaviour is valid for the elastic state, that is, at the service level of the loads. Time-dependent, cyclic loading or plastic behaviour is not considered.

AbstractWhile we know that upcoding of diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) regularly occurs, we have little knowledge of the role of the technical features of coding systems in inducing coding behaviour. This paper presents methods for investigating the financial structure of the Dutch DRG system, and more in particular the grouper software, to gain such insight. The paper describes a system for investigating the robustness of the reward structure, by simulating the response of the DRG system to small changes in individual coding. The results from these analyses are used to visualise some data on coding behaviour, and to investigate how this behaviour is affected by incentives in the technical features of the DRG system. A number of technical weaknesses in the system are also identified.

Résumé :
Abstract. Analysis of hydrochemical behaviour in extreme flow events can provide new insights into the process controls on nutrient transport in catchments. The examination of storm behaviours using hysteresis analysis has increased in recent years, partly due to the increased availability of high temporal resolution datasets for discharge and nutrient parameters. A number of these analyses involve the use of an index to describe the characteristics of a hysteresis loop in order to compare different storm behaviours both within and between catchments. This technical note reviews the methods for calculation of the hysteresis index (HI) and explores a new more effective methodology. Each method is systematically tested and the impact of the chosen calculation on the results is examined. Recommendations are made regarding the most effective method of calculating a HI which can be used for comparing data between storms and between different parameters and catchments.

This paper presents new evidence on technical efficiency and its sources by examining the cost behaviour of 387 farms and whole-farm data from five irrigated districts of Punjab. Fitting translog variable cost frontier we find that technical inefficiency raises the cost of average sample farms by 24 percent that could have been saved had the farms been technically efficient. Our results enable us to conclude that farm efficiency is positively related to formal schooling of farm operators, abundance of canal water, and head reaches of mogha, and negatively to farm size, while the age of farm operators has no effect on efficiency.

Résumé :
Purpose Due to interactive fluctuations during service encounters, fuzzy requests frequently occur from either frontline employees or customers. While such requests from customers have been drawn wide attention, there exists a lack of research on frontline employees’ fuzzy requests and possible outcomes (e.g. compliance or refusal). The purpose of this study is thus to identify the underlying mechanism and enacting variables that influence customers’ compliance behaviour (i.e. positive outcome) to fuzzy requests. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from a sample of ten express service companies in southeast China. The proposed model was empirically tested among 309 customers and further analysed through structural equation modelling. Findings The results indicated that expected technical quality, perceived reasonableness and perceived convenience are positively associated with compliance behaviour, whereas the effects of inertia and negative emotional response on compliance behaviour are significantly negative. The findings also demonstrated that negative emotional response partially mediates the impacts of expected technical quality, perceived reasonableness and inertia on compliance behaviour. Originality/value This study investigates an under-researched phenomenon, namely, frontline employees’ fuzzy requests in the service context. The underlying mechanism of customers’ compliance behaviours to fuzzy requests is articulated through an integration of three beliefs with emotional response. As an early exploration of employees’ fuzzy requests, this study provides important theoretical and managerial implications.

Résumé :
The aim of this study is to investigate the static and dynamic behaviour of multilayer materials manufactured from granular recycled rubber applied to technical flooring. The studied samples were manufactured by varying their thickness, density and granulometry, as these are the parameters that determine the performance of these rubbery materials. Two mechanical tests, static and dynamic, were carried out under controlled conditions to evaluate the mechanical behaviour of these materials by means of its modulus of elasticity and dynamic stiffness. Relating dynamic stiffness to impact sound insulation, it can be concluded that these materials are suitable for use in technical flooring, such as in fitness facilities. The selection will vary for static and dynamic behaviour, with different materials suitable for different applications. In general, the most suitable material for high stiffness applications is the one that reached values of 67.3 MPa for the static modulus and 72.96 MPa for the dynamic modulus of elasticity. The results allow for the consideration of these materials as substitutes for the most commonly used materials, such as ethylene vinyl acetate.

Résumé :
Purpose This paper provides new insights about security behaviour in selected US and Irish organisations by investigating how organisational culture and procedural security countermeasures tend to influence employee security actions. An increasing number of information security breaches in organisations presents a serious threat to the confidentiality of personal and commercially sensitive data. While recent research shows that humans are the weakest link in the security chain and the root cause of a great portion of security breaches, the extant security literature tends to focus on technical issues. Design/methodology/approach This paper builds on general deterrence theory and prior organisational culture literature. The methodology adapted for this study draws on the analytical grounded theory approach employing a constant comparative method. Findings This paper demonstrates that procedural security countermeasures and organisational culture tend to affect security behaviour in organisational settings. Research limitations/implications This paper fills the void in information security research and takes its place among the very few studies that focus on behavioural as opposed to technical issues. Practical implications This paper highlights the important role of procedural security countermeasures, information security awareness and organisational culture in managing illicit behaviour of employees. Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between poverty and technical efficiency (TE) of paddy farmers in presence of their heterogeneous selling behaviours. This paper explains how such behavioural heterogeneity affects this relationship in south-western Bangladesh. Design/methodology/approach Translog production frontier model was used to estimate TE since it fitted the data set better. On the other hand, poverty indices were constructed by using P-α method. Then, multinomial logit models examined the existence of heterogeneous selling behaviours. It revealed adequate evidences in favour of behavioural heterogeneity. Finally, the authors employed a series of two stage instrumental variable regression models to relate poverty and TE with and without considering the behavioural heterogeneity. Findings The study finds that around 18, 39 and 44 per cent of households exhibit autarkic, non-wholesaling and wholesaling behaviour, respectively. Market failure due to transaction cost and credit constraints leads to emergence of such heterogeneity. Across these heterogeneous behaviours, impact of improving TE on poverty status significantly differs. Without controlling behavioural heterogeneity, TE significantly improves the poverty status of the rural farm households. However, scenario is changed after controlling this heterogeneity. After behavioural segregations, TE improves poverty status only for wholesalers. In contrary to prior expectation, it worsens the poverty situation for both autarkic and non-wholesaling households. Simultaneous failure in both credit and product market for these households might be the plausible reason behind this heterodox finding. Credit market failure compels these households to borrow from local money lenders with costlier terms. This effort might improve their TE. But, product market failure makes their additional production due to improved TE unsold. Thus, repayment of credit directly reduces their consumption expenditure. Therefore, an effort to improve TE might increase prevalence and depth of poverty when market failure exists. Henceforth, the improvement of TE appears as an effective policy instrument only when households exhibit wholesaling behaviour. Originality/value The earlier studies show the relationship between TE and poverty status but did not account behavioural heterogeneity. The authors attempt to overcome this shortcoming and show how market failure induced behavioural heterogeneity affects the effectiveness of TE on improving poverty status of farm households.

Résumé :
Abstract. Analysis of hydrochemical behaviour during storm events can provide new insights into the process controls on nutrient transport in catchments. The examination of storm behaviours using hysteresis analysis has increased in recent years, partly due to the increased availability of high temporal resolution data sets for discharge and water quality parameters. A number of these analyses involve the use of an index to describe the characteristics of a hysteresis loop in order to compare storm behaviours both within and between catchments. This technical note reviews the methods for calculation of the hysteresis index (HI) and explores a new more effective methodology. Each method is systematically tested and the impact of the chosen calculation on the results is examined. Recommendations are made regarding the most effective method of calculating a HI which can be used for comparing data between storms and between different water quality parameters and catchments.

Résumé :
This study aims to examine the determinant factors of dysfunctional audit behaviour. This analysis used job stress and technical competence of auditors as an independent variable, dysfunctional audit behavior as dependent variable, and personality traits from The Big Five Personality theory and locus of control as moderating variables. The samples used in this study were auditors who work in public accounting firm in the region of DKI Jakarta. The results show that job stress has a positive effect on dysfunctional audit behaviour, the technical competence of the auditor has a negative effect on dysfunctional audit behaviour. In addition, personality traits of neuroticism and external locus of control reinforce positive effects of job stress on dysfunctional audit behaviour. Meanwhile personality traits openness to experience and internal locus of control were able to weaken the relation of job stress to dysfunctional audit behaviour. Then, other personality traits such conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness do not weaken the positive effect of job stress with dysfunctional audit behavior. This indicates that the auditor's technical competence, personality traits and locus of control are important to reduce the likelihood of dysfunctional audit behavior. Sedangkan sifat kepribadian openness to experience dan Locus of control internal memperlemah hubungan positif stres kerja terhadap perilaku disfungsional audit.

FDM is 3D printing technology using mainly PLA and ABS as filament materials. PP has close characteristics to PLA and, due to that, is a potential material for for deposition. Paper aims to analyse the behaviour of PP during heating cycle specific to 3D printing process. Macroscopic and microscopic analysis of the deposited strings have been performed. They revealed less stiffness of the PP deposition comparing to PLA, which is due to the lower viscosity of PP. DSC Thermal analysis has been done at it revealed a 30% higher heat flux in PP comparing to PLA and that increases its fluidity. It was recorded a difference between the elongation viscosity of the PP filament and the PP deposited by FDM process. After 5s the deposited PP proves higher values for the elongation viscosity. Dynamic shear rheology measurements the was applied on samples deformed under 210 kN at 190oC. It has been found that the PP requires lower storage energy and that means that it has a lower viscosity for the entire range of applied frequencies. In the same time, the complex viscosities prove different behavior. To improve the control of the deposition shape, it is necessary to reduce the extrusion temperature with 4-5%. That leads to economy in power consumption.

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1980-0037.2016v18n4p401 The aim of this study was to analyse the stability of the breaststroke technique in five elite swimmers in a 200m event using a qualitative analysis. The codification of the behaviour of each swimmer during the execution of 20 cycles was achieved using an ad hoc observational instrument comprised of a system of categories and field formats to detect the behavioural patterns (T-patterns); software was used for identifying the technical behaviour of stable structures. The results showed that the stability behaviour varied depending on the swimmer, as the variations of codes in each round produced distinct configurations to determine the differences between cycles for the same swimmer. It was concluded that the instrument used in this study plays an important role through the existence of stable behaviour in the breaststroke technique. It was also concluded that there are distinct patterns and behaviours between swimmers during each lap of the race.

Résumé :
AbstractHistorically, domestic chores such as washing dishes were all done by hand. Today it is estimated that 44% of the households in the EU are equipped with a dishwasher. In this article, we discuss the connections between technical developments, consumer behaviour and the test standard for energy labels. The aim of this study is to provide recommendations for future work that would strengthen the role of the energy label in order to promote the more sustainable technical development of household appliances. Technical developments are compared with the consequences of different consumer behaviour. It was found that technical developments could reduce annual energy use, but depending on the implemented technology, this is often complex and requires additional components. On the other hand, a consumer can easily increase energy usage by 50% without being aware of doing so, when goods are pre-treated, appliances incorrectly loaded, or inappropriate programs selected. Our recommendation is first of all to encourage the use of dishwashers as they consume less energy and water compared with washing up manually. A holistic approach should be taken to updating the energy labelling system. Actual consumer behaviour must be taken into account and, perhaps most importantly, as dishwashers are becoming ever more energy efficient, consumers must be educated in using the machines in an environmentally friendly way. We conclude that the energy labelling system is outdated; it must be fundamentally revised and must take into account consumer behaviour.

Résumé :
Abstract. The tail behaviour of the statistical distribution of extreme storm surges is conveniently described by a return level plot, consisting of water level (y axis) against average recurrence interval on a logarithmic scale (x axis). An average recurrence interval is often referred to as a “return period”. Hunter's allowance for sea-level rise gives a suggested amount by which to raise coastal defences in order to maintain the current level of flood risk, given an uncertain projection of future mean sea-level rise. The allowance is most readily evaluated by assuming that sea-level annual maxima follow a Gumbel distribution, and the evaluation is awkward if we use a generalized extreme value (GEV) fit. When we use a Gumbel fit, we are effectively assuming that the return level plot is a straight line. In other words, the shape parameter, which describes the curvature of the return level plot, is zero. On the other hand, coastal asset managers may need an estimate of the return period of unprecedented events even under current mean sea levels. For this purpose, curvature of the return level plot is usually accommodated by allowing a non-zero shape parameter whilst extrapolating the return level plot beyond the observations, using some kind of fit to observed extreme values (for example, a GEV fit to annual maxima). This might seem like a conflict: which approach is “correct”? Here I present evidence that the shape parameter varies around the coast of the UK and is consequently not zero. Despite this, I argue that there is no conflict: a suitably constrained non-zero-shape fit is appropriate for extrapolation and a Gumbel fit is appropriate for evaluation of Hunter's allowance.
