Résumé :
Atmospheric neutrinos are produced as decay products in hadronic showers resulting from collisions of cosmic rays with nuclei in the atmosphere. Electron-neutrinos and muon-neutrinos are produced mainly by the decay chain of charged pions to muons to electrons. Atmospheric neutrino experiments observed zenith angle and energy-dependent deficit of muon-neutrino events. It was found that neutrino oscillations between muon-neutrinos and tau-neutrinos explain these data well. This paper discusses atmospheric neutrino experiments and the neutrino oscillation studies with these neutrinos.

Résumé :
Objective: To compare mean differences in core body temperature (Tcore) as assessed via rectal thermometry (Tre) and aural thermometry (Tau) in hyperthermic exercising individuals. Data Sources: PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library in English from the earliest entry points to August 2009 using the search terms aural, core body temperature, core temperature, exercise, rectal, temperature, thermistor, thermometer, thermometry, and tympanic. Study Selection: Original research articles that met these criteria were included: (1) concurrent measurement of Tre and Tau in participants during exercise, (2) minimum mean temperature that reached 38°C by at least 1 technique during or after exercise, and (3) report of means, standard deviations, and sample sizes. Data Extraction: Nine articles were included, and 3 independent reviewers scored these articles using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale (mean = 5.1 ± 0.4). Data were divided into time periods pre-exercise, during exercise (30 to 180 minutes), and postexercise, as well as Tre ranges <37.99°C, 38.00°C to 38.99°C, and >39.00°C. Means and standard deviations for both measurement techniques were provided at all time intervals reported. Meta-analysis was performed to determine pooled and weighted mean differences between Tre and Tau. Data Synthesis: The Tre was conclusively higher than the Tau pre-exercise (mean difference [MD] = 0.27°C, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.15°C, 0.39°C), during exercise (MD = 0.96°C, 95% CI = 0.84°C, 1.08°C), and postexercise (MD = 0.71°C, 95% CI = 0.65°C, 0.78°C). As Tre measures increased, the magnitude of difference between the techniques also increased with an MD of 0.59°C (95% CI = 0.53°C, 0.65°C) when Tre was <38°C; 0.79°C (95% CI = 0.72°C, 0.86°C) when Tre was between 38.0°C and 38.99°C; and 1.72°C (95% CI = 1.54°, 1.91°C) when Tre was >39.0°C. Conclusions: The Tre was consistently greater than Tau when Tcore was measured in hyperthermic individuals before, during, and postexercise. As Tcore increased, Tau appeared to underestimate Tcore as determined by Tre. Clinicians should be aware of this critical difference in temperature magnitude between these measurement techniques when assessing Tcore in hyperthermic individuals during or postexercise.

Résumé :
Lepton flavor violating rates can be experimentally measurable even if the observed neutrinos are strictly massless. We make a study of the attainable rates for anomalous leptonic muon and tau number violating decays such as μ→eγ, μ→3e, τ→μγ, τ→eγ, τ→μμ+ μ−, τ→ ee+e−, τ→eμ+μ−, etc. as well as semileptonic lepton flavor violating tau decays such as τ→μπ0, τ→eπ0, τ→eη, etc. All muonic violating decays can be as large as the present limits from LAMPF, TRIUMF and PSI. The corresponding tau violating processes can all be at the limit of sensitivity of the upcoming τ factories.

Résumé :
The event reconstruction at the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is predominantly based on the Particle Flow algorithm. This algorithm for a global event description uses the information from all subdetector systems, unlike the previous, traditional approaches that were focused on the localized information in each subdetector. These traditional methods use the raw information (tracks, hits), while the Particle Flow algorithm completely reconstructs the event by identifying and reconstructing the comprehensive list of final-state particles (photons, electrons, muons, charged and neutral hadrons), resulting in superior reconstruction of jets, missing transverse energy, tau leptons, electrons and muons. This approach also allows for efficient identification and mitigation of the pileup effect. The concept and performance of the Particle Flow algorithm, together with the prospects for its development in the context of the upgraded CMS detector, are presented in this overview.

Résumé :
In a recent paper, the authors discussed the feasibility study of an innovative technique based on the directionality of Cherenkov light produced in a transparent material to improve the signal to noise ratio in muon imaging applications. In particular, the method was proposed to help in the correct identification of incoming muons direction. After the first study by means of Monte Carlo simulations with Geant4, the first reduced scale prototype of such a detector was built and tested at the Department of Physics and Astronomy "E. Majorana" of the University of Catania (Italy). The characterization technique is based on muon tracking by means of the prototype in coincidence with two scintillating tiles. The results of this preliminary test confirm the validity of the technique and stressed the importance to enhance the Cherenkov photons production to get a signal well distinguishable with respect to sensors and electronic noise.

Résumé :
The experimental test problem of the left–right polarization-dependent lifetime asymmetry is discussed. It shows that the existing experiments cannot demonstrate the lifetime asymmetry to be right or wrong after analyzing the measurements on the neutron, the muon and the tau lifetime, as well as the g-2 experiment. However, it is pointed out emphatically that the SLD and the E158 experiments, the measurements of the left–right integrated cross section asymmetry in Z boson production by e+e- collisions and by electron–electron Møller scattering, can indirectly demonstrate the lifetime asymmetry. In order to directly demonstrate the lifetime asymmetry, we propose some possible experiments on the decays of polarized muons. The precise measurement of the lifetime asymmetry could have important significance for building a muon collider, also in cosmology and astrophysics. It would provide a sensitive test of the standard model in particle physics and allow for exploration of the possible V+A interactions.

Résumé :
Abstract Ultra-high-energy neutrinos serve as messengers of some of the highest energy astrophysical environments. Given that neutrinos are neutral and only interact via weak interactions, neutrinos can emerge from sources, traverse astronomical distances, and point back to their origins. Their weak interactions require large target volumes for neutrino detection. Using the Earth as a neutrino converter, terrestrial, sub-orbital, and satellite-based instruments are able to detect signals of neutrino-induced extensive air showers. In this paper, we describe the software code nuPyProp that simulates tau neutrino and muon neutrino interactions in the Earth and predicts the spectrum of the τ-leptons and muons that emerge. The nuPyProp outputs are lookup tables of charged lepton exit probabilities and energies that can be used directly or as inputs to the nuSpaceSim code designed to simulate optical and radio signals from extensive air showers induced by the emerging charged leptons. We describe the inputs to the code, demonstrate its flexibility and show selected results for τ-lepton and muon exit probabilities and energy distributions. The nuPyProp code is open source, available on github.

Résumé :
Abstract The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the next major observatory for Very High Energy gamma-ray astronomy. Its optical throughput calibration relies on muon Cherenkov rings. This work is aimed at developing a fast and efficient muon tagger at the camera level for the CTA telescopes. A novel technique to tag muons using the capabilities of silicon photomultiplier Compact High-Energy Camera CHEC-S, one of the design options for the camera of the small size telescopes, has been developed, studying and comparing different algorithms such as circle fitting with the Taubin method, machine learning using a neural network and simple pixel counting. Their performance in terms of efficiency and computation speed was investigated using simulations with varying levels of night sky background light. The application of the best performing method to the large size telescope camera has also been studied, to improve the speed of the muon preselection.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a 27 km circumference proton-proton collider built at CERN with the goal of investigating the physics processes manifesting at the TeV scale. It started its operations in 2009, colliding two proton beams at the center of mass energy of 0.9 TeV. This energy was then gradually increased up to 13 TeV in 2015, which represents the highest energy reached so far by a hadron collider. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is one of the two general-purpose experiments at the LHC. The main goals of the experiment are the study of the Higgs boson, indeed discovered in 2012 by ATLAS and CMS, and the search for new physics. One of the most promising fields is the search for Lepton Flavour Violating (LFV) processes, strongly suppressed in the SM but predicted by many Beyond Standard Model (BSM) theories at much higher rates. The subject of this thesis is the search for the LFV decay tau- -> mu+ mu- mu-, and it will focus on tau leptons originating from W bosons. The analysis is performed within the CMS experiment on Run-II data, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 146.9 /fb. The work presents the analysis of 2017 and 2018 data and completes the result obtained on 2016 statistics, recently published by CMS [1]. This was the first CMS result for the tau -> 3mu search; I personally contributed to the analysis for the W->tau nu channel. Indeed, the tau->3mu process is studied within CMS also in the Heavy Flavour (HF) channel to exploit the full potentiality of the experiment. The two channels have some advantages and some constraints. The sensitivity of the HF search is essentially limited by the low pT of the tau leptons and by the large QCD background. By way of contrast, the factors limiting the sensitivity of the LFV search in W->tau nu decays mainly come from the much smaller W production cross section when compared to that of the Heavy Flavours in proton-proton collisions. Nevertheless, tau leptons from W are characterized by clear signatures, i.e. the large missing energy, the good lepton isolation, the low background, and higher pT values, which better suite the CMS triggers. The 2016 study has allowed to identify the weak points of the analysis. In particular, a new trigger was studied and implemented to target specifically tau->3mu processes from W->tau nu decays, taking advantage of the kinematic and topological characteristics of this channel. The new version was included online in 2017. The distinctive features of the W channel are further exploited in the offline analysis of the collected events, which adopts multivariate techniques (MVA) to suppress the background contamination. The signal yield upper limit is estimated from the distribution of the three-muon candidate invariant mass; the signal is fit with a Gaussian function in a signal region defined around the tau mass, while the background is extrapolated from the data sidebands and parametrized with a polynomial function. The analysis has lead to an estimation of the expected upper limit (at 90% of confidence level) of 4.4 x 10^-8 for the W channel. Combining the limit obtained in this thesis with the expected limit coming from the parallel analysis of HF decays and with the result on 2016 data, we obtained a global limit of 2.3 x 10^-8 for the tau->3mu decay, which is competitive with the the world-best result. The analysis presented in this thesis was under internal approval at the time this thesis was written, so that only the expected upper limit, computed on blind data, is reported. Iyer, Sharada Ramalingham. « A novel approach in the detection of muon neutrino to tau neutrino oscillation from extragalactic neutrinos ». Diss., The University of Arizona, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/290068.

Résumé :
A novel approach is proposed for studying the ν(μ) → ν(τ) oscillation and detection of extragalactic neutrinos. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), Gamma Ray Bursters (GRB) and Topological Defects are believed to be sources of ultrahigh energy ν(μ) and νₑ. These astrophysical sources provide a long baseline of 100Mpc, or more, for possible detection of ν(μ) → ν(τ) oscillation with mixing parameter Δm² down to 10⁻¹⁷ eV², many orders of magnitude below the current accelerator experiments. The propagation characteristics of upward going muon and tau neutrinos is studied to show that high energy tau neutrinos cascade down in energy as they propagate through the Earth, producing an enhancement of the incoming tau neutrino flux in the low energy region. By contrast, high energy muon neutrinos get attenuated as they traverse the Earth. It is observed that the relative steepness of the incoming neutrino flux spectrum and the nadir angle of the Earth are two important factors that influence the enhancement and cascade of nutau flux. This effect provides a novel way to search for tau neutrino appearance by measuring the angular dependence of tau neutrino induced upward muons; and upward hadronic and electromagnetic showers. A Monte Carlo evaluation of tau survival probability and its range shows that at energies below 10⁷ - 10⁸ GeV, depending on the material, only tau decays are important. However, at higher energies the tau energy losses are significant, hence reducing the survival probability of tau. Here, tau energy loss for energies up to 10⁹ GeV have been calculated taking into consideration the decay of tau. An understanding of tau energy loss at very high energies could help with the interpretation of long tracks produced by charged particles in large underground detectors.

Résumé :
The Tay people represent an ethnic minority in the mountainous north of Vietnam. As do Shaman rituals in all regions, the Shaman of the Tay people in Vietnam exhibit uniqueness in their languages and accommodation of their society’s world view through their ‘Then’ rituals. The Then rituals require an integration of many artistically positioned and framed elements, including language (poetry, vows, chanting, the dialogue in the ritual), music (singing, accompaniment), and dance. This paper investigates The Art of Speaking of the Tay Shaman, through their Then rituals, which include use of language to describe the imaginary journey of the Shaman into the three-tiered world (Muong fa - Heaven region (Thien phu); Muong Din - Mountain region (Nhac phu); Muong Nam - Water region (combination of Thuy phu and Dia phu) to describe dealings with deities and demons, and to describe the phenomenon of possession. The methodic framework of the paper thus includes discussions of in the comparison between the concept of the three-storey world in the Then ritual of the Tay people with the concept of Tam Tu phu in the Len dong ceremony of the Kinh in Vietnam. Thereby, it clearly shows the concept of Tay people of the universe, the world of gods, demons, the existence of the soul and the body, and the existence of human soul after death. The study contributes to Linguistics and Anthropology in that it observes and describes the world views of a Northern Vietnamese ethnicity, and their negotiation with spirituality, through languages of both a spiritualistic medium and society.
