Day, Deanna Lea. « "A taste of teaching" : Preservice teachers and children engage in literature circles ». Diss., The University of Arizona, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/280166.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The purpose of this qualitative teacher research study was to explore the characteristics of literature circles with preservice teachers and children. Drawing on Vygotsky's (1978) sociocultural theory and Rosenblatt's (1938) transactional theory, this study focuses on the talk of preservice teachers in literature circles with children and the perceptions of preservice teachers about these literature circles. The study was conducted in a fourth grade classroom and a university children's literature course in the southwestern United States over one academic year. Thirty children and 27-28 preservice teachers participated in three to five literature circles each semester. A total of 47 literature circles were tape recorded, transcribed and analyzed. Other sources of data included a teaching journal, free writes from participants and interviews with some preservice teachers. The methods of analysis included coding, visual markers and constant comparison. These literature circles were investigated through a detailed description of the data. There were certain characteristics to organizing the discussions such as selecting books, developing the discussion strategies, planning the circles, producing free writes and reflecting on the experience. This study focuses on how the talk of preservice teachers in literature circles with children evolved over time. The results indicate that the preservice teachers initiated and facilitated discussion, asked and answered questions, dominated discussion, listened, supported and explored children's talk, and shared personal connections and responses as a reader. In addition, the study explores preservice teachers' perceptions of literature circles with children. Three major themes were found: The preservice teachers learned about children in the literature circles, how to do circles and the value these circles for children. Finally, the findings illustrate how the literature experience with preservice teachers influenced the children. According to the data, the children had significant relationships with young adults, managed the literature circles, considered different perspectives in the discussions, gained confidence in their ability to talk, gained perspectives on college and acquired personal advocates. This study shows the importance of partnerships between universities and elementary schools. The preservice teachers were given opportunities to experience reading, writing, learning and teaching with children. The college students were able to observe children learning and to reflect on these experiences.

Kummerfeld, Rebecca Kay. « For Industry, Taste and Hand-eye Coordination : Art Education in Sydney from 1850 to 1915 ». Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/15551.

Résumé :
This thesis explores the history of art education in Sydney from 1850 to 1915. This was a foundational period for the establishment of both art and education in Sydney. It was a time during which structures of schooling first emerged, technical instruction became a priority and a government supported art gallery was established. I draw on a wide range of English and Australian sources to consider what comprised art education in Sydney during this foundational period. It is a topic that has received little scholarly attention, but is important for allowing those currently involved in art education an understanding of the foundations on which our current system was built. This thesis focuses on four key research questions. The first, ‘why teach art?’ is examined through analysis of discourse surrounding art education in this period. Three major motivations that informed the provision of art education in Sydney are identified: the importance of art for industry, a desire to teach taste and the broader educational benefit of art instruction for improving hand-eye coordination. ‘Where was art taught?’ is a second major focus. The art instruction offered through schools, technical colleges, exhibitions and galleries is examined in order to map the landscape of art education in Sydney. This thesis offers a novel contribution through the creation of a chronology, tracing the development of art instruction across a range of educational institutions. Thirdly, ‘who taught art?’ is considered through a series of professional biographies, featuring a range of individuals involved in the provision of art education. These case studies show the way one person could influence instruction across a range of institutions. Analysis of periodicals, personal papers, educational magazines, government records and school archives is undertaken to gain a deeper understanding of the contribution of these individuals. Finally, the question of ‘how art was taught’ is considered through close analysis of the tools used in teaching. Plaster casts and copybooks are examined, both for their pedagogic value and as artistic objects in themselves and how they were used to disseminate visual culture in Sydney.

This investigation is produced in the field of musical education with a socio-cultural approach. It is a qualitative study and aims to understand how young violinists and violist students of the School of Music of the State of São Paulo – Tom Jobim, EMESP - have built their taste in music. At the beginning of this work it is showed the object of study, as well as is clarified the sociological concepts of young people and youth. I review studies dealing with interaction between young people and music, and some works about the taste of young people by music. Following, I present the taste theory of Antoine Hennion which is the theoretical support of this research in its central concepts: the collective of the amateurs, which are understood as "people who does something with the music"; the professional or amateurish, the concept of mediation, the reflexivity, the musical performance and the four supports for the analysis of taste. It was also resorted ethnographic procedures as participant observation, fieldnotes, informal conversations, semi-structured interviews and observations of these young musical practices, and audiovisual records. From October 2014 to June 2015 I interacted with ten young students, nine violinists and a violist with age between 11 and 24 years, that interaction took place in Tom Jobim EMESP and OJESP-Youth Orchestra of the State of São Paulo in Brazil. In interpretative chapter, I present the mediators involved on the study, amateurs in action and the musical genres tasted. I exhibit an illustration created from reflections about the pragmatics of taste in music, which have helped to understand how young people build their taste for music. The results point out the mediators that linking young people to music and to music actions dense of bodily expressions, physical and emotional sensations. It was observed that the mediators are supports for the construction of taste of young people for music that collectively develops their performances and show on the engagement of the body the taste by music, verbalizing it through music reflexivity. Finally, I concluded indicating implications of this research for music education.

Résumé :
Throughout my years of architecture education I have become more and more aware that we are connected with architecture from the very first moments of our life. Architecture, an important part of our environment, affects our experiences, feelings, memories, and ultimately the decisions we make. To exploring the connection between architecture and the human experience was the intention for my thesis. Whether positive or negative, everything created or done by man has an affect on his environment. Some people are more aware of their architectural environment some are less but at the end we all life with it and have at least an unconscious impression of it. Based on these impressions and the consciously experienced details of our environment, of events we have feelings and make judgments and decisions. The nice dinner on a Friday night which makes you feel comfortable and good, it is a result of the whole environment of the place where you have dinner. Not only the room temperature, your company, your table neighbors, the restaurant staff, the expectations of the coming weekend but more important the dimensions of the space that make it feel grand or intimate, the way sound sticks to the walls or bounces off them giving life to the space, or the way a single beam of light can show you the beauty of colors and materials.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the prospective PE teachers' experiences of and taste for nature and outdoor life, how it is reflected in their beliefs about nature and outdoor activities in education and school physical education. The method of the study, which has a qualitative approach, has been unstructured interviews and focus groups. The results are analyzed with the help of Bourdieu's theories and concepts of field, capital, habitus and taste. The result shows that the respondents in this study have had experiences of outdoor activities that are of a simple nature. When they start their teacher training in outdoor activities, there is a collision between the respondents' habitus with simple outdoor life in their local environment and the teacher training "game rules" where the experience of more upscale and advanced outdoor activities are recognized and valued. Taste or distaste for outdoor activities is amplified during training. Respondents also experience problems with the interpretation of the concepts of nature and outdoor activities that are multifaceted. Nature is described on the one hand as untouched wilderness and on the other hand as a park in the city. An activity is considered an outdoor activity in one context and the same activity is regarded as a sport in another context. The results also show a consensus among respondents when regarding the teaching of outdoor activities in physical education and how it should be implemented in the future of the school. Interest in or a taste for outdoor activities, according to respondents, is essential to teach in a professional manner. It is not enough to only have a didactic skill but an important aspect for the respondents are also the ability to follow the policy documents’ intentions with regard to outdoor recreation.

The goal of this research is to demonstrate the contribution that the concept taste which origin, in many languages, reveals an inner relation between the notions flavour and knowledge can bring to the understanding and the disassembling of the objective and subjective devices through which operates the subordination of people to capital, a process within which mass-communication performs an important role. Methodologically, it is a theoretical research technicaly, a bibliographic one , that articulates reflexions about taste in the fields of philosophy, aesthetics and sociology with the political and epistemological wider debate around marxism, and with the political and epistemological specific debate in the field of communication. The result of the work should be the theoretical foundation of a vehement alert about the urgency to create alternatives for the catastrophic potencial of the contemporary global social reality. Following this direction, there are a few practical proposals, specially for a new education, based on the notions autonomy and flavour, opposed to the dominant intrumentality.

The reflections mentioned here direct it to an analysis about the importance of the reading education - understood practical as a construction of the language act of the writer, of its direction and of its reason, in which reader and writer, supposedly, meet in a cooperating act as well the capacity of reading, of understanding, of reflecting, of interacting and of acting over the reality. The reading - essential factor for the understanding of the reality - serves to strengthen Ethical and Moral values, as well to develop the creativity in a differentiated and challenging boarding. Reading is part of life. With this, its practical must be involving and captivating to the point of generating necessity and personal satisfaction. We must provide to the students a conviviality with the reading, allowing that it fulfills its role: to widen by means of the reading of signs, the reading of the World and to privilege the reading for the acquisition of knowledge, understand how a historical-social process that promotes and enables the individual to believe that the teaching of a critical reading is a component of the awareness and development process, that will allow to the individual a more careful reflection in relation to the social acts in which is inserted. The taste for the reading will be awaked if the child exercises the daily reading, in a pleasant, comprehensive and comfortable form; the taste for the reading isnt awaked for external reasons, it is internal; it already comes with the person or then the taste for the reading will be awaked if the child will have examples at home and will have access to the varied reading.

This thesis comes from a simple idea : what one does, what one lives change us. Now, within the collective experiences, one tends to become more and more shared : going for higher studies. It is therefore surprising to note that few studies have examined the impact that majors may have on the judgment of students, whose identity – so much as professional - remains under construction. From a survey inspired by the European Values Survey and the Survey on The Cultural Practices of the French, and conducted with a final sample of students from 11 academic disciplines, our work shows that the controversial idea of a socialization deserves consideration. For if from the first year the disciplines tend to attract populations with already differentiated profiles, they tends at the end to reshape these initial particularisms. Disciplinary contents undoubtedly play a role in this remodeling, through the acquisition or reinforcement of specific skills and dispositions. But concomitantly, the particularization of student profiles over the years appears to be a phenomenon of anticipatory socialization : becoming an advanced student and the appropriation of the future and probable place occupied in the social space go hand in hand

The present work aims to contribute to the studies related to the musical taste of students, dealing as well with its implications for the educational field. The research is methodologically characterized, as an exploratory research, since it allows evaluating the qualitative feature of the information for later, quantifying them. The balance of these two methodological poles (qualitative and quantitative) provides a complementary character of the search allowing, as a result, a better understanding into the phenomenon. The objective was to identify points of intersection between education and culture reviewing the literature of Bourdieu, which allows us to realize the socio-cultural reproduction, the cultural capital and the role of schools in the formation of the habitus. The study also relies on the theoretical references of Bernard Lahire, who have makes flexible the category habitus coined by Bourdieu. In the possession of defining characteristics of the hybrid and plural individual, in terms of Lahire, we undertook a more appropriate analysis on the construction of youth people in contemporary society. Lahire proposes a sociology of dispositional plurality in which individuals are exposed to heterogeneous socializing, often contradictory, attending successively or alternatively various cultural practices. This phenomenon is particularly observed in the musical and cultural consumerism of young people. We also entered in the complex and wide field of music as an important key to understand the society. Furthermore, we delineated the category of youth, by tracing the concept in its socio-historical modulations over the times, reaching up the current landscape ruled by the sign of contemporary globalization. The reception and use of audiovisual and electronic technologies reflect on youth attitudes, on their lifestyles, on patterns of taste and forms to express their demands... Résumé :
This investigation charts a number of complementary explorations at the site of electronic media in art practice and design and media education. Artists are increasingly using video and computer technology in the production of their work, and these shifts are reflected in the way design and media courses are taught in Higher Education. This study seeks to relate a number of often contentious issues, but complex questions are central to any debate about the use of electronic imaging technologies by artists and the implications for teaching and learning. In this respect, the thesis is informed by my dual role as an artist using electronic media and as a lecturer in video and digital imaging in the Media Department at the University of Westminster. The study is based on a particular model of action research, and seeks after the manner of Glaser and Strauss (1967) to "ground" theory in the aggregate perceptions, understandings, and artistic or pedagogical orientations of those seeking to bring order to their own experiences in the settings. The text is arranged in eleven chapters. It begins by introducing the boundaries of the phenomena under study (which is necessarily ragged and untidy and challengingly gritty, since the composite issues have yet to have attracted any clarity of exposition, and the field is in any case characterised by imaginative leaps and cross-fertilisation) and the methodological and idealogical stances adopted. Methodologically the thesis is wide-ranging and eclectic, although also contained within the kind of feminist epistomology proposed by Sandra Harding (1992), Marnier Lazreg (1994) and others. It then moves on to examine a number of focal points and issues related to the use to which electronic media is put by artists. These topics include my own sustained attempts to develop non-linear computer systems for mapping associative thoughts, and a more general and more detailed study of the principles and characteristics of these systems when they are used for holding information about knowledge domains. Following this, there is a chapter dedicated to the application of these principles to a particular knowledge domain, colour theory, with the aim of designing a computer aided learning package. The interconnections between all the topics, issues and themes studied in the text are highlighted in the middle of the thesis before moving on to more specific investigation of the issue of gender in both technological education and creativity, with an emphasis on the use of imaging technologies by women artists. The impact of these technologies in terms of shifting aesthetic values and tastes forms the basis of the final chapter, and a conclusion seeks to offer both a tentative intellectual synopsis and to indicate how the exercise has influenced and affected my work as an artist. I am aware that to some extent this arrangement challenges both the linear quality of conventional research reportage and academic distrust of promiscuously interpenetrating ideas. I trust that this form of discourse, deliberately chosen, is experienced as working within its own terms.

Abstract: The present work aims to contribute to the studies related to the musical taste of students, dealing as well with its implications for the educational field. Résumé :
This thesis brings the work of twentieth century political philosopher Hannah Arendt to a consideration of educational thought. It argues for and seeks to demonstrate ways in which Arendt's oeuvre provokes and vitalizes educational thought as it concerns pluralism, ethics, democracy, knowledge, meaning and critique. In seeking "new landscapes to think from" for education, it invites Arendt's phenomenological recovery of the political, the public realm, to disturb particular forms of thought that give shape to contemporary education. It specifically engages the problematics of modernity, in its expressions as the liberal self, instrumental rationality and alienating structures of authority. The author argues that these reiterate the bankruptcy of meaning which Arendt calls "worldlessness," and that this concern is of deep and continuing significance to education. In a reconsideration of understanding and meaning beyond the automatism and ubiquity of the liberal self, this thesis then considers how thinking, judging, action and speech, as Arendt posits them, may call upon education to better enact its "promise to the world" of freedom and human dignity.

Résumé :
This paper focuses on how interior decoration and taste was seen and taught in relation to the vision of the ideal home in 1940s Sweden. Two phenomena that are focused on are surveys of how people actually lived, and the attempts made to alter that way of living. The activities of Svenska Slöjdföreningen (SSF, the Swedish Society of Industrial Design) is used as a prism for discerning the discourse on domestic interior reform, and the study consists of a close reading and analysis based on archival material and publications linked to SSF. Part of the archival material consists of survey protocols and photograph, of Swedish homes, from a survey into “dwelling habits” initiated by the Association of Swedish Architects (SAR) and the SSF. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, these kinds of surveys were made in order to analyse the standard of living, and the usage of homes and furniture with the aim to find adequate ways of building better housing, of producing better furniture, and of educating people to be more modern and enlightened consumers and home-makers. Based on these findings, courses were given on how to furnish and decorate the home. Through courses in how to furnish and decorate the home, the ideal home was to become real. I mean that the concept of “taste” was almost as important as the concept of “home” in the vision of what modern Swedish society should be like, but that manifesting “good taste” in the home in the 1940s meant something more than merely creating an aesthetically pleasing or beautiful interior. Taste was, above all, seen as an indicator of the degree of modernity and social awareness of people.

In France, school catering must comply with regulatory constraints to ensure the nutritional quality of the meals. Beyond the nutritional dimension, school catering can play a role in various sustainability challenges (environmental, social, cultural, educational and economic). Recently, regulations have mandated school cantering to serve a weekly vegetarian meal, and have proposed that volunteer local authorities experiment a daily vegetarian meal option. The aim of this thesis was to assist the school catering of the city of Dijon increasing the frequency of vegetarian meals while involving the dimensions of sustainable food.In a first study, the nutritional quality and carbon footprint of the meals were analyzed across various categories. In a second study, connected feedback devices installed in the 38 elementary school canteens in Dijon were used to collect and analyze children's liking of the dishes. In a third study, a survey was conducted to investigate how many parents would like to opt for more vegetarian school meals for their children and what would be their family characteristics and motivations. In a fourth study, a sensory education program named “Chouette Cantine” was co-created with the school canteen staff and implemented in two schools in Dijon. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of this program on children’s plant-based food acceptance and eating traits. This research showed that the both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals had a similar nutritional quality and were generally appreciated by children. Compared to non-vegetarian meals, greenhouse gas emissions were more than twofold reduced in vegetarian meals. Nevertheless, vegan dishes were less liked than egg and/or cheese-based dishes, which had a lower nutritional quality. Vegetarian dishes were slightly more popular than meat or fish dishes in school canteen attended by children from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Concerning parents, 49% of respondents to our survey would opt for a second weekly vegetarian meal for their children and 26% for a daily vegetarian meal. Parents willing to opt for more vegetarian meals were more likely to also opt for pork-free meals for their children and had a higher level of education, and their children used the school canteen less frequently. They were also more likely to be flexitarian or vegetarian. Environmental motivations, fair trade, health and animal welfare were positively associated with the desire to increase the frequency of vegetarian meals; while familiarity and sensory appeal motivations were negatively associated. Finally, the evaluation of “Chouette cantine” program showed encouraging effects on children’s knowledge, willingness to taste and identification one of the two plant-based food (red beans) but not the other (cabbage). This thesis provides recommendations for local authorities would like to offer more vegetarian meals in their school catering, while conciliate the dimensions of food sustainability

Résumé :
This research\'s main objective is to understand how the taste is built from the relationships between youth students and the Sertanejo Universitário. Seven 14 17 years old teenager students were chosen from Colégio da Polícia Militar - Unidade Dionária Rocha, located in the city of Itumbiara-GO, to participate of the investigation. More specifically, aimed to identify practices these young with the Sertanejo Universitário, and to focus how the taste is appropriated through various practices and, therefore, understand the learning process within those reationships. In order to better understand the field in which this research is part, the literature review presented studies associated with youth in contemporary, the relationship between young-music-school and young-music-taste, plus a brief history of ―música sertaneja‖ especially its current side, the Sertanejo Universitário. The second chapter provides an overview of the Sociology of Music, with emphasis on sociologists who contributed to the growth of the area. In the same chapter, the taste theory of Antoine Hennion is shown, and its foundations based on three pillars: the taste as a performance, the construction of taste with support in the collective activity and reflexivity of the amateur. The third chapter details the methodological procedures applied to research, choosing the narrative interviews as a technique for data collection. Also in this chapter, there the observations made in school and during an event of the ―música sertaneja‖, there is from a concert held on the Arraiá in Itumbiara-GO. For the analysis, I use the technique of triangulation of data, exposing the youth narrated about their practices and performances with the Sertanejo Universitário, in what respects their tastes were supported by a collective activity and how it happened moments of reflexivity. The observations allowed the visualization of the actions of youth involved with the music, and equally important reflections on the school as a space where youth perform various musical practices. In addition, I state my studies about the taste is presented as a result of a series of practices that provides youth with music, such as the constant listening, singing, dancing, among others. This research also provides to know the strategies used by youth students surveyed for their musical practices. Thus, the taste is built in diverses practices that were perceived the youth executed an instrument (performance), in the many who exhibited the importance with your colleagues, friends and family (collective activity) and when through a word or even the absence, gave evidence of his taste through a reflective activity.

Monserrat, i.

The doctoral thesis, entitled The educational tact. Bases for a formative proposal, points out an important contribution to the theoretical research about pedagogical tact the as well as possibilities for its application to Teacher Training at University. In recent years, the question of tact, and specifically, the contribution of the Dutch pedagogue Max van Manen, has been worked on by different specialists in the Theory of Education and at different conferences and symposiums. A study of the theoretical sources and the original contribution of van Manen’s work has never been made until now. This thesis shows how the Educational Tact question has its roots in different works, such as the Aristotelian work Nicomac Ethics, Herbart’s lecture that was read in Göttingen University in 1802, Jakob Muth’s work entitled Pädagogic Takt and more specifically Hans-Georg Gadamer’s updating about the Nicomac Ethics though his great teacher Martin Heidegger. At the same time, the thesis not only goes into philosophical bases, but also pedagogical aspects. That is why it provides the translation of a Herbart manuscript found in the library of Göttingen University, and the translation of Muth’s work quoted in Max van Manen’s pedagogical works. The conclusion of the study of the works, never translated into Catalan nor Castilian, and of the first part of the research, is that van Manen’s works are not original but instead his ideas come from the sources that have been mentioned above. In the second part of the research, the question of tact training is dealt with. That is why there is a fieldwork – in an ethnographic interview methodology -, with different specialists in the fields of music, poetry and sculpture. The thesis of the second part of the research is that tact training in teacher experience can only be tackled from the field of art and not the “technical” field. One of the original features of the thesis, especially in this second part of the work, is the presentation of the ideas on the bases of a musical scale in which the “la” is the note that allows the “instruments” to be tuned even though it is not the most important note. This carries a change of perspective in Teacher Training and not only the employment of the art or the literature as a teaching tool, but also as a pedagogical perspective. The thesis helps us to reconsider Teacher Training as belonging to the field of arts starting from the contributions of the arts, the cinema and music and literature in order to rethink the curriculums in Education Faculties based on some of the proposals of this thesis. Finally, one of the motivations of the reading of this thesis is the need to offer a new vision of Teacher Training from the tact perspective and not only from a “tactical” points of view, which is nowadays the point around which curriculums and training plans are built.

During the administration of Fabio da Silva Prato in the City of São Paulo, the Municipality created in 1935 the Department of Culture, the first municipal institution for the dissemination, research, encouragement in the field of arts and culture. For having participated in the formulation of the outline in the Department creation, Mário de Andrade took over the management of the institution, as determined the regulation, he racked up the position of Head of the Cultural Expansion Division. Through the scope of the project and the originality of their initiatives, the Department drew the attention of artists, politicians and intellectuals interested in establishing public policies for culture in Brazil, becoming a reference center of the state capital for related matters to arts, public amusements, cultural heritage and sociological, historical and ethnographic research. As part of the Cultural Expansion Division the approved project in 1935 provided for the creation of a Radio School, which is the main communication channel of the Department of Culture with the public city. Listeners could follow broadcast concerts of the Municipal Theater, live music in studio programs, selected disks programs of collection of the Municipal Public Record Collection, aswell as conferences and courses with intellectual guests. In spite of the efforts of the Management of Department, the initiative cannot be implemented in full, that is, the station itself never aired. But that does not mean that have failed completely. To ensure maintenance of a schedule with the desired quality, the Department had to create an institutional structure before you even start the radiations. First created a bureaucratic section and from there created the Record Collection and stable musical groups. This structure came to work even without still had conditions to air the network, putting into practice the objectives of the planned Department for Radio School, especially as regards the formation of the musical taste of the São Paulo public. The Record Collection opened its heap to consultees and made of Brasilians music recordings for the stamp of the Department of Culture. Musical groups, in turn, periodically did free Public Concerts of educational nature at the Municipal Theater. In the context of the 1930s, when the expansion of radio activity was already noticeable in Brazil, the project to create a station of the Department of Culture is related to the belief that intellectuals of that time had about the educational potential of broadcasting.

Résumé :
This doctoral thesis is about female rock musicians who are involved in two Swedish non-profit feminist music associations; Rockrebeller, which is situated in Uppsala and She´s Got the Beat in Umeå. The aim of the study is to analyze how the informants describe their lives as rock musicians and as active participants in these feminist music associations. The main issues are musicianship, identity, feminism and gender. The empirical material consists of in-depth interviews with ten informants – five from Umeå and five from Uppsala – and these interviews are complemented by a number of participatory observations. The focus of thesis is on the informants’ self-presentations: their stories and experiences. One central theme is the ways that the informants’ different identities are interlaced and closely knit together in different ways: as feminists, as musicians and as active participants in the associations. Two major themes in my thesis are music and politics and they can be regarded as two sides of the same coin; in order to make it easier for women to play rock music they have become involved in the associations, and this relationship is regarded as a form of political work. The informants have been influenced by punk and Riot Grrrls Movement – a feminist movement that is associated with punk bands and fanzines is sometimes seen as representative of a "third wave feminism". All the informants are members of rock bands, but many are also engaged in other projects, for instance in the role of a singer-songwriter, and these different identities as musicians are often seen as complementary to each other. Rock bands are generally considered to be fascinating but insecure experiences because bands tend to split up with time. Those who are also active musicians outside of the band (most often guitarists) usually regard their own individual identity as musicians as the most important thing; a safe harbor that is always there. Their ideological beliefs are for instance visible in a common vision of the ideal rock band as democratic, anti-hierarchic and where an equality of opportunity exists. Rock music is in some ways used as an expression for an alternative way of life, of rebellion, and is seen as politically subversive. One of the ambivalences of the source material is the kind of identity politics that the associations represent and whose purpose is to improve the gender equality in the field. There is a well-known dilemma involved in this practice; how is it possible to navigate from a marginalized, subordinated position, without using the method of categorizing that may increase the probability of reproducing their own marginalization? Their life as rock musicians is described as enjoyable rewarding, and as a means of expressing their cultural belonging and ideological beliefs, such as feminism. However, the overall picture highlights the pleasures of creating and making music, which serves as an explanation why they strive to make rock music more accessible for women. The descriptions of being in a band and performing on stage are varied and on the whole complex. The group dynamics of the band are portrayed as very meaningful but also trying at times, and playing in front of an audience is described as everything between ecstasy and a nerve-wrecking experience. However, there is an overall adaptation to the norms surrounding rock music; a sense that one has to adjust oneself in order to function as a rock musician. The informants´ statements generally emphasize gender, but from time to time they identify themselves with other male amateur rock musicians.

Résumé :
In developed countries the relationship between socioeconomic position (SEP) and health is unequivocal. Those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged are known to experience higher morbidity and mortality from a range of chronic diet-related conditions compared to those of higher SEP. Socioeconomic inequalities in diet are well established. Compared to their more advantaged counterparts, those of low SEP are consistently found to consume diets less consistent with dietary guidelines (i.e. higher in fat, salt and sugar and lower in fibre, fruit and vegetables). Although the reasons for dietary inequalities remain unclear, understanding how such differences arise is important for the development of strategies to reduce health inequalities. Both environmental (e.g. proximity of supermarkets, price, and availability of foods) and psychosocial (e.g. taste preference, nutrition knowledge) influences are proposed to account for inequalities in food choices. Although in the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), and parts of Australia, environmental factors are associated with socioeconomic differences in food choices, these factors do not completely account for the observed inequalities. Internationally, this context has prompted calls for further exploration of the role of psychological and social factors in relation to inequalities in food choices. It is this task that forms the primary goal of this PhD research. In the small body of research examining the contribution of psychosocial factors to inequalities in food choices, studies have focussed on food cost concerns, nutrition knowledge or health concerns. These factors are generally found to be influential. However, since a range of psychosocial factors are known determinants of food choices in the general population, it is likely that a range of factors also contribute to inequalities in food choices. Identification of additional psychosocial factors of relevance to inequalities in food choices would provide new opportunities for health promotion, including the adaption of existing strategies. The methodological features of previous research have also hindered the advancement of knowledge in this area and a lack of qualitative studies has resulted in a dearth of descriptive information on this topic. This PhD investigation extends previous research by assessing a range of psychosocial factors in relation to inequalities in food choices using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. Secondary data analyses were undertaken using data obtained from two Brisbane-based studies, the Brisbane Food Study (N=1003, conducted in 2000), and the Sixty Families Study (N=60, conducted in 1998). Both studies involved main household food purchasers completing an interviewer-administered survey within their own home. Data pertaining to food-purchasing, and psychosocial, socioeconomic and demographic characteristics were collected in each study. The mutual goals of both the qualitative and quantitative phases of this investigation were to assess socioeconomic differences in food purchasing and to identify psychosocial factors relevant to any observed differences. The quantitative methods then additionally considered whether the associations examined differed according to the socioeconomic indicator used (i.e. income or education). The qualitative analyses made a unique contribution to this project by generating detailed descriptions of socioeconomic differences in psychosocial factors. Those with lower levels of income and education were found to make food purchasing choices less consistent with dietary guidelines compared to those of high SEP. The psychosocial factors identified as relevant to food-purchasing inequalities were: taste preferences, health concerns, health beliefs, nutrition knowledge, nutrition concerns, weight concerns, nutrition label use, and several other values and beliefs unique to particular socioeconomic groups. Factors more tenuously or inconsistently related to socioeconomic differences in food purchasing were cost concerns, and perceived adequacy of the family diet. Evidence was displayed in both the quantitative and qualitative analyses to suggest that psychosocial factors contribute to inequalities in food purchasing in a collective manner. The quantitative analyses revealed that considerable overlap in the socioeconomic variation in food purchasing was accounted for by key psychosocial factors of importance, including taste preference, nutrition concerns, nutrition knowledge, and health concerns. Consistent with these findings, the qualitative transcripts demonstrated the interplay between such influential psychosocial factors in determining food-purchasing choices. The qualitative analyses found socioeconomic differences in the prioritisation of psychosocial factors in relation to food choices. This is suggestive of complex cultural factors that distinguish advantaged and disadvantaged groups and result in socioeconomically distinct schemas related to health and food choices. Compared to those of high SEP, those of lower SEP were less likely to indicate that health concerns, nutrition concerns, or food labels influenced food choices, and exhibited lower levels of nutrition knowledge. In the absence of health or nutrition-related concerns, taste preferences tended to dominate the food purchasing choices of those of low SEP. Overall, while cost concerns did not appear to be a main determinant of socioeconomic differences in food purchasing, this factor had a dominant influence on the food choices of some of the most disadvantaged respondents included in this research. The findings of this study have several implications for health promotion. The integrated operation of psychosocial factors on food purchasing inequalities indicates that multiple psychosocial factors may be appropriate to target in health promotion. It also seems possible that the inter-relatedness of psychosocial factors would allow health promotion targeting a single psychosocial factor to have a flow-on affect in terms of altering other influential psychosocial factors. This research also suggests that current mass marketing approaches to health promotion may not be effective across all socioeconomic groups due to differences in the priorities and main factors of influence in food purchasing decisions across groups. In addition to the practical recommendations for health promotion, this investigation, through the critique of previous research, and through the substantive study findings, has highlighted important methodological considerations for future research. Of particular note are the recommendations pertaining to the selection of socioeconomic indicators, measurement of relevant constructs, consideration of confounders, and development of an analytical approach. Addressing inequalities in health has been noted as a main objective by many health authorities and governments internationally. It is envisaged that the substantive and methodological findings of this thesis will make a useful contribution towards this important goal.

Résumé :

The percentage of students entering postsecondary education has steadily increased and college participation rates are currently reported at nearly 42% for persons age 18-24. However, the demand for a college-educated workforce continues to increase and various programs have been introduced to increase student success in college. One of those programs is termed "Dual Enrollment." The purpose of this study was to determine if a dual enrollment program implemented between the Anderson Union High School district and Shasta College increased students' perceptions of their own college readiness for reading, writing, and class participation. The results of the student assessment are compared with that of their peers who did not participate in the dual enrollment program. The participants were requested to complete a 20-question survey developed by the researcher. In the survey, participants were asked to assess their preparation in reading, writing, and class participation as well as provide responses to open-ended prompts. Participants were also asked to rate their overall preparation for college level work and to provide information related to outside factors that may affect college success. Finally, students' high school achievement data were used to provide background information related to student success. With a response rate of 31%, 92 of 301 students, the survey revealed that students who participated in dual enrollment assessed themselves as more prepared but in specific areas. Dual enrolled students felt more prepared in writing and an even greater difference for assessing themselves was revealed in their preparation for class participation.

Résumé :
Education and Learning at Tate has flourished in the past fifty years, from being a small and supplementary function to the usual workings of the gallery in 1968, to currently being placed at the centre of the institution’s function. Artist-educators have worked with education and learning programmes throughout this 47 year history and have been instrumental in developing pedagogies throughout this period. This thesis examines how artists have engaged with learning programmes at Tate from 1968-2015. For this, I have researched the archive at Tate Britain to find examples of education practices and have analysed the varying pedagogical purposes and philosophies developed by the department since 1968. From this research, I have identified that the pedagogical philosophies developed by artist-educators were heavily influenced by the head of the department. I therefore decided to split the research into the five configurations of the departmental structure from 1968 to 2015. I focused on one case study from each phase of the department’s history and interviewed its associated artist-educator and strategist. From this research I found that pedagogical approaches were influenced by concurrent trends in art practices and discourses around art and gallery education. Furthermore, I discovered education programmes throughout this history related to an evolving concept of encouraging ‘agency’ in the gallery. I have grounded these case studies in the context of a critical pedagogic analyses, paying attention to how pedagogy is developed in relations to notions of agency. I conclude with a discussion examining the intersection of department policy, changing notions of agency and the pedagogical identities of the learner and artist.

Résumé :
This thesis presents the research undertaken for an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award between Tate Liverpool and the University of Liverpool's Centre for Architecture and the Visual Arts. By making use of the direct access to unpublished institutional records and original observations of contemporary practice permitted by this collaboration, this thesis aims to provide insight into, and enhance understanding of, the specific social relations created and maintained by Tate Liverpool, both within and beyond the museum, throughout its history. The first section of the thesis begins with two accounts of Tate's institutional history. Chapter one presents the rationale behind the founding of Tate Liverpool in the 1980s, by considering the establishment of the Liverpool branch in relation to a much longer history of expansions to Tate's original Millbank site. Chapter two presents a history of Tate Liverpool's educational practice, from 1988 to 2008, by documenting the establishment of a constructivist learning methodology at the museum and the development of several education programme strands throughout the first two decades of operation. The accounts of Tate's institutional history are supplemented, in the same thesis section, by two contextual chapters intended to form the socio-political backdrop for the preceding institutional histories. Chapter three offers a context for understanding the social significance of Tate Liverpool's founding, by examining the wider circumstances surrounding the museum's arrival in Liverpool amid a period of tumultuous urban change resulting from the decline of Liverpool's traditional industries. Chapter four provIdes a backdrop for understanding Tate Liverpool's development throughout its first twenty years, by considering the significant characteristics of the distinctly neoliberal governance of national cu Itural institutions throughout this time. The second section of the thesis draws on the information provided in the preceding historical accounts and contextual studies to offer a critical assessment of Tate Liverpool's educational practice and the museum's role in urban change. This assessment is undertaken across the last three chapters of the thesis. Chapter five offers a critical case study of a recent example of Tate Liverpool's integrated educational-curatorial practice, by examining the planning, implementation and reception of the exhibition The Fifth Floor: Ideas Taking Space (2008). Chapter six undertakes a broader historical critique of the museum's educational methodology and the practice of classifying the public according to learner categories. Chapter seven provides a critical assessment ofTate Liverpool's role in urban change, by analyzing the distinctly postmodern aspects of the museum's display practices, architecture and position on Tate Liverpool's iconic Albert Dock.

Résumé :

This thesis is structured in six chapters. Chapter I contains an introduction and includes purpose, theory, method, and concepts. The main purpose, as depicted by the title, is to examine the roots of Swedish ideology concerning what today is generally named design, as embodied in the concept of more beautiful or better things for everyday life (in Swedish: ”vackrare vardagsvara”).

Chapter II contains a background and includes philosophical ideas and aesthetic movements in Europe which have influenced the Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts (in Swedish ”Svenska Slöjdföreningen”, abbreviated SSF) which was later renamed the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design (in Swedish: ”Föreningen Svensk Form”). It considers these activities: the Arts and Crafts movement in England, the Swedish national romantic movement, Deutscher Werkbund in Germany, and Swedish moulders of public opinion and new ideas, like Ellen Key, Carl Larsson and Gregor Paulsson.

Chapter III is an ideological biography of Gregor Paulsson. The chapter deals with biographical data and ideological development, and the social aesthetical texts which were important in his activity in the National Museum and as director of The Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts. Gregor Paulsson is considered mainly in his role as social aesthetical propagandist and museologist.

Chapter IV concerns the early history and activities of the Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts seen as an introduction to the Baltic Exhibition 1914, and the subsequent schism which eventually led to its reorganization and a new ideological orientation. Its activities were directed towards increased cooperation between artists and industry, and a special department was established as an employment office for companies and designers under the management of the textile artist Elsa Gullberg. This chapter also includes a brief portrait of key persons in the Society.

Chapter V is a study in several sections of the articles for everyday use seen in industrial practice, with Gustavsberg’s china factory and Orrefors’ glassworks as two separate historical studies. The 1917 Home Exhibition is surveyed as an example of the educational ambitions in the development of people’s taste. The focus of the chapter, however, is the international industrial art exhibition in Paris 1925, Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, and the debate about it in the Swedish and French press.

Chapter VI consists of a concluding discussion with a final epilogue. It contains suggested questions for future research including relations between design and ethics.

ABSTRACT This research project aims to investigate the elaboration process justification of musical taste. The theoretical framework falls within the field of Philosophy (Aesthetics) and Sociology of Music, taking into account the complexity of the music diffusion and reception post Cultural Industry and the relationship between body and aesthetic-musical experience. The problem discussed is born of questions about the validity of the musical tastes of the masses, especially young no musicians. The research question is: how young students prepare their justifications of taste and musical preference? Will be analyzed (content analysis) the high school students justifications preference collected in the registers of music appreciation classes held in the 1st year of high school in the period 2007-2013, in the discipline Arts / Music activities. This work brings as preliminary research data to characterize the repertoire of students' preference in 2013 preceded by two theoretical frameworks whose axes are the Aesthetics and Sociology of Music, thus seeking to verify the hypothesis that justification of musical preferences, independent the type of music to which they refer, follow structures of thought elaborate a priori (music history, music theory, etc.) or a posteriori (connection to feelings and sensory experiences), so such justifications are equal

This work has as its objective to investigate the musical conceptions and practices of students from the 8th grade of the elementary education and the policies concerning the art and music education at school in Ponta Grossa – Paraná, having as analysis vectors the media and the school musical practices. The proposed specific objectives are: to investigate the musical taste and practices of students from the 8th grade of the elementary education; to analyze the educational policies for the art and music education and the musical practices of the school, in order to verify in what level they meet the musical taste demand and the musical experience of the students; to investigate the students conceptions concerning the art and music education at school. The proposal of the research undertaking set off from the disquiet about the relation of the students with music, their practices and musical consumption, keeping in sight the Law Project 330/06, approved as an ordinary Law n.11769/2008, which makes obligatory the music education at school. The method applied is based in the dialectical and historic materialism, considering that the subjects and the research spaces are inserted into a wider economical, political and social reality. The prioritized instrument of research was the questionnaire, applied in 297 students from the 8th grade from 13 state public schools and 6 private schools from Ponta Grossa - Paraná. The obtained results indicate that the investigated adolescents have musical knowledge, showing themselves as active music consumers, and their taste derivates from the mediatical emissions, mostly based on the internet. However, the school does not incorporate this knowledge, reducing not only the music, but also the art to a secondary situation in the school environment. The educational policies are configured as an important way of democratization to the artistic languages access, but they need to be readjusted and rethought according to the contexts in which they are inserted. The verification that the school does not work the musical and artistic knowledge properly, and does not consider important adolescents practices knowledge, leads to reflect about the imposed challenges by the new law which institutes the obligation of music in the basic education.

This dissertation explores the ways in which an educational mission was central to the conceptualization, production, and consumption of the category of modern art in Egypt during the first half of the twentieth century. It is structured as a series of four case studies, each offering a rereading of a moment that has been repeatedly highlighted in the literature as a turning point in the development of modern art but that remains unexamined. Chapter One is a study of a fatwa by the leading Islamic reformer, Muhammad `Abduh, which is considered to be his declaration of support for representational art. In a close reading of this understudied text, I demonstrate the ways in which this fatwa has been misinterpreted and misappropriated; `Abduh never mentions "art" [al-fann] specifically but instead discusses the merits of pictorial representation [al-taswir] as a form of visual knowledge, a useful tool for preservation and learning. Chapter Two focuses on the establishment of the School of Fine Arts in Cairo in 1908. Relying on largely unexamined material, I describe and analyze the prevalent discourses that shaped the kind of education that the school offered, the perceptions its founders, faculty, and students had of its role, and ultimately the role of modern art and the artist within Egyptian society. The second half of the dissertation attends to the reception and consumption of art through the development of art criticism [al-naqd al-fanni] and the role of journals in educating Egyptian audiences. Chapter Three is a study of and Sawt el-Fannan [The Voice of the Artist, 1950-2], "the first monthly magazine for the fine arts." I focus here on the writing of art history and criticism as a means of educating Egyptian eyes to see and appreciate in a specific set of ways. The notion of taste [dhawq] and its complex social and moral functions demonstrate that what is at stake here is something much larger than an aesthetic sensibility. Chapter Four examines Al-Tatawwur, a journal published by al-Fann wa-l-Hurriyya [Art and Freedom] in response to André Breton and Diego Rivera's 1938 manifesto "Towards a Free Revolutionary Art." Al-Tatawwur professes a commitment to "protecting the freedom of art and culture." However, this often seems in tension with their almost militant educational and political mission. Throughout these four cases a series of recurring concerns emerge. First, painting and sculpture are presented as important first and foremost because of the ways in which they can be useful or beneficial. Their uses differ from chapter to chapter however each group approaches artistic production through the prism of function and benefit. Secondly, in each situation we find ourselves at a moment of crisis, in which a particular group feels threatened and thus attempts to reach out a larger public, as a means of reasserting their position and reaffirming their relevance. Repeatedly, artistic production seems to be the most appropriate way of doing this. The third central theme of this dissertation the educational quality and potential of the fine arts; despite their seemingly varied positions, the writers and thinkers I discuss attach an educational function to artistic production. There seems to be a unanimous agreement on the stakes, despite political orientation: the struggle is a civilizational one, and art is the barometer for progress. In tracing the establishment and development of modern art in Egypt, this dissertation offers a set of innovative perspectives and engages with a number of different fields of inquiry related to the cultural and intellectual history of Egypt. While a literary and linguistic Nahda, has been the subject of much study, the existence and importance of a visual Nahda has been largely absent.

The present dissertation focuses on the mechanisms of formation and education of architectural taste. A study was carried out that seeks to understand the concepts of aesthetics and taste, as well as its evolution, integration and distinction in the fields of philosophy and architecture. This first part aimed to construct a historical framework of these same concepts and their application over time, thus not intended to elaborate an exhaustive research, but rather a small synthesis that tried to frame the rest of the work. The second part of the work consists on the analysis and interpretation of a survey carried out to the students of the courses of Architecture and Civil Engineering of the University of Minho, with the main objective of perceiving the evolution of the taste along the years of the courses, as well as the main differences which are imposed between them. This inquiry is divided into two parts: one of multiple choice and one of direct observation through images of thirty different chosen architectural objects in a weighted way. In the third part of this work, it was carefully analyzed all that has been concluded through the completed surveys, trying to investigate more deeply how the architectural taste is formed and educated. This third part was divided in two sub-chapters: the formation of the architectural taste and the education of the architectural taste, both with different approaches. For each of them were chosen and studied the factors which were considered most relevant considering the rest of the work.

Résumé :
Recent research in the sociology of culture has placed significant focus on musical taste and practices. This research agenda has ushered an understanding of the relationship between social class and cultural consumption, and particularly, the implications that patterns of cultural preferences and practices have on social inequality. A frontrunner in this line of work is Bourdieu (1984), who offers a sophisticated and useful theoretical framework—the Cultural Capital Theory—to illuminate the role of culture and its consumption in society. Written as three publishable papers, the chapters use empirical evidence to explore three issues surrounding highbrow musical practices that enrich Bourdieu (1984)’s framework. The first paper (Chapter 2) examines the role of structural and personal barriers in blocking attendance to highbrow concerts. It takes as a starting point Bourdieu (1984)’s argument that upper class individuals are more likely to attend classical music and opera concerts than their lower class counterparts, and questions whether these distinct patterns of participation are attributable to the different barriers that each class faces. The second paper (Chapter 3) offers a sophisticated analysis of the impact of socialization on highbrow concert attendance. By innovatively integrating the concepts of timing and duration, hallmarks the Life Course Perspective, I map out the potentially dynamic nature of the socialization process. In doing so, I illustrate the varying implications that different timing and duration of exposure has on later life highbrow concert participation. The last paper (Chapter 4) investigates the process of socialization to understand what conditions present during this crucial period in time encourage persistence in highbrow musical practices. I find that engaging in interactions that allow one to experience positive emotional resonance, develop a musical identity, and feel a sense of autonomy over musical decisions lead to the propensity to remain engaged in musical activities throughout life.

The main purpose of this study is to discuss David Hume’s theory of taste, and its educational implications. Hume begins the discussion with reconciling sentiments. Taste, according to Hume, is the source of our judgments when we judge a work of art to be beautiful or an action to be virtuous. Taste gives the sentiments of beauty and deformity, vice and virtue. The intrinsic quality of the sentiments is pleasure and displeasure. Although there are many sources of variation about taste, we still need to seek a “standard of taste”. The purpose is to reconcile the various sentiments of men and give the objects appropriate criticisms. Because a fine taste and strong sense are inseparable, to cultivate a relish in liberal arts can help us lose by degrees that sensibility and delicacy of passions which is incommodious. And the exercise will also improve our sensibility for all the tender and agreeable passions. As to the analysis of objects beauty, it is from the idea of “convenience” and “utility”, besides, we can also find some rules of art from the works with durable admiration, and we take the tragedy for example to illustrate the changes of men’s sentiments when they are watching it. The “standard of taste” is from the superior critics who are able to appreciate the highest and most excellent beauty and give the objects appropriate criticisms. Basically saying, this study analyses the principles and process of taste and moral taste. The process of taste starts from men’s feelings through receiving information from objects by their organs. The process of moral taste starts from men’s moral sense through receiving the motive of an action or a character by sympathy and being sifted by the moral principles in mind which being maintained by plain reason. Because of the relations of taste and moral taste, to increase and improve our taste benefits the accuracy of moral taste; if the process of taste is related with moral ideas, the negative moral sense will disfigure the objects beauty, and make it to be a real deformity. At last, this study extends Hume’s theory of taste to the educational implications, including the benefits of aesthetic experience to the whole teaching process and the cultivating of students’ sentiments and moral taste.

Tate Kids website (https://kids.tate.org.uk/) is a microsite that subordinates to Tate Gallery in London, UK. Targeting young audience, this virtual museum is designed especially for kids who age from five to twelve years old. According to Crow & Din (2009), the virtual museums are not merely an informal learning environment, the special effects such as the light and sound effect, digital games and interactivity enable kids to construct unique online experiences. Moreover, the museums or galleries itself can harness these technologies with sensory stimulations, and further transform the artworks, which originally represent the high culture, into the forms that are more suitable for kids to learn and play. These enable the kids to explore, interact and participate, which eventually lead to self-fulfillment and empowerment. Tate Gallery meditates the Tate Kids website as a bridge between arts and kids; on the other hand, it is also an approach to overturn the inequalities of the distribution of cultural resources among different social classes. This paper adapts the qualitative analysis, including discourse analysis, text analysis and qualitative analysis, and attempts to apply Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of culture capital and reproduction theories with a critical examination with Tate Kids website as an online museum exhibition context and its practices in distributing the cultural and digital capital to kids of different social background.
