Résumé :
Purpose: The present study reports a detailed analysis of written and spoken language samples of Hebrew-speaking children aged 11–13 years who are deaf. It focuses on the description of various grammatical deviations in the two modalities. Method: Participants were 13 students with hearing impairments (HI) attending special classrooms integrated into two elementary schools in Tel Aviv, Israel, and 9 students with normal hearing (NH) in regular classes in these same schools. Spoken and written language samples were collected from all participants using the same five preplanned elicitation probes. Results: Students with HI were found to display significantly more grammatical deviations than their NH peers in both their spoken and written language samples. Most importantly, between-modality differences were noted. The participants with HI exhibited significantly more grammatical deviations in their written language samples than in their spoken samples. However, the distribution of grammatical deviations across categories was similar in the two modalities. The most common grammatical deviations in order of their frequency were failure to supply obligatory morphological markers, failure to mark grammatical agreement, and the omission of a major syntactic constituent in a sentence. Word order violations were rarely recorded in the Hebrew samples. Clinical Implications: Performance differences in the two modalities encourage clinicians and teachers to facilitate target linguistic forms in diverse communication contexts. Furthermore, the identification of linguistic targets for intervention must be based on the unique grammatical structure of the target language.

Résumé :
The remnant of the eastern European Jews that arrived in Israel after the Holocaust established a vibrant center of Yiddish culture in Tel Aviv. This paper tells its story. It spotlights the uniqueness of the Tel Aviv center in comparison with similar cultural centers established by eastern European Jews in other cities around the world, both before and after the Holocaust. It portrays the Jewish cultural activists and leaders that composed the Tel Aviv Yiddish center, the special conditions that awaited them in Israel, the institutions that they established, and their aftermath. Finally, it considers the Tel Aviv Yiddish cultural center as a test case for examining the social role of the Jewish cultural center after the Holocaust.

This article seeks to examine the impact of the transition from Yishuv to state on the Sephardi and Mizrahi leadership, as reflected in the patterns of organization and action of the Sephardi community councils in general, and the Councils of the Sephardi Community in Tel Aviv and Haifa in particular. Against the background of the growing centralized power of the state under the leadership of Mapai and the application of the principle of statism (mamlachtiut), the article will discuss the activities of the Councils of the Sephardi Community in Haifa and Tel Aviv. The article analyzes the process that led in 1951 to the dissolution of the Sephardi and Oriental Communities Union as a political framework, as well as the decision made in the same year by the community councils in Haifa and Tel Aviv to withdraw from political activity.

Résumé :
Tel Aviv was mentioned as a world city for the first time by Kellerman (1993) who empha-sized the existence of leading economic functions typical for the late 20th century city. This paper extends the notion of Tel Aviv as a world city in evolution, using up-to-date world city literature and indicators. Greater (metropolitan) Tel Aviv with 2.6 million population in 2000 (Tel Aviv City had 350000) has been Israel`s primate urban agglomeration since the 1920s. Since the 1990s it has evolved into a hard core of Israel`s post-industrial, globally orientated economy, and has displayed a post-modern physical ambience and social and cultural lifestyle. Tel Aviv evolved into a global city in spite of the fact that it is located at a frontier in its own region, the Mideast, and at the cul-de-sac site relative to the mainstream global economic centers with which it maintains most of its network links. In addition to common attributes of a world city one of the main assets of Tel Aviv is its high R&D inten-sive industry, acting as a growth pole for the local and national economies. Future research avenues are an in-depth analysis of Tel Aviv`s social inequalities and the linkage patterns that Tel Aviv maintains with other urban centers of world city caliber.

Résumé :
On 15 April 2002, Marwan Barghouti, a high profile Member of the Palestinian Parliament and a close aide of the late Palestinian leader, Yasir Arafat, was arrested and transferred to Israel for trial. On 14 August 2002, he was charged with multiple counts of crimes including acts of terrorism, murder and conspiracy to murder. In the Courtroom in Tel-Aviv, Barghouti was being tried for acts of terrorism, but in the court of public opinion, Israel was using the trial to slander and discredit the Palestinian leadership as a bunch of ‘murderous gangs,’ and ‘enemies of all mankind.’ On his part, Barghouti uses the judicial space to go beyond the surface problem of law and legality to the deeper question of occupation – a problem that is at the depth but also all across the normative structure of Israel’s legal order. Through re-signification, the accused becomes the accuser, putting the state of Israel and the occupation on trial. In this article, I consider the ways in which the accused and the accuser repurpose the legal material to produce and disseminate ideas, concepts, and images productive to their respective politics. Attending to the ways in which discourses of occupation, resistance, and terrorism were synchronized with the legal form, the article reflects on how the narratives move from the legal to the political, from the personal to the social, from the local to the global, and from the theological to the political, creating the conditions of possibility for meaning and understanding.

Résumé :
After the ousting of Palestinians from an ethnically segmented labour market, Israel has recruited large numbers of nonJewish labour migrants to fill the country's low wage sector. As elsewhere, restrictive migration policies could not hinder migrants from staying on, organising, and collectively struggle for their rights. Within the urban space ofIsrael's most cosmopolitan centre, the so-called 'White City' of Tel Aviv, they have appropriated a space with a long history of social, economic, and cultural exclusion from Israeli mainstream society, the southern 'Black City'. In 2002, Israel adopted a deportation campaign of migrants who had become 'illegals'. As subsequently tens of thousands of Tel Aviv's residents were forced to leave the country within a short period oftime, Israel, and in particular migrants' main residential area in southern Tel Aviv, became an increasingly unhomely space. In the wake of this change, migrants' everyday lives in Israel were 'transnationalised', and orientations shifted towards the 'greener pastures' of Western Europe and Northern America. Within this process, Tel Aviv became one of the Mediterranean's 'border cities', a transnational gateway, which the notion of' global city' cannot fully grasp.

This paper surveys the historical urban infrastructure and architecture of the School of Mechanical Engineering at Tel-Aviv University, designed by one of the greatest architects of the 20th century, Louis I. Kahn. The paper describes the monumental architecture of the building, which hints subtly to the qualities and complexity of the internal spaces. The structure is the only building ever erected in Israel by Kahn, and became an architectural icon, presenting the best in the Brutalist architectural style to be found in Tel-Aviv-Yafo, alongside other outstanding structures from the same period.

Résumé :
The LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning) community is warmly embraced by the city of Tel Aviv. This phenomenon is exemplified by the fact that the Tel Aviv City Hall has been taking a leading part in the organization, financing, and promotion of Pride parades and events in recent years. The present article analyzes a quantitative survey of overseas participants in the 2016 Pride events in Tel Aviv. It explores the motivations, attitudes, satisfaction, and behaviors of tourists, both LGBTQ+ and non- LGBTQ+. The results show that Tel Aviv is perceived as gay friendly by all participants, regardless of their affiliation with the LGBTQ+ community. We discuss the advantages of being a gay-friendly city via high visibility and social inclusion. Finally, we address ‘pinkwashing’, an umbrella term employed to describe the efforts by Israeli authorities to promote a positive image of Israel despite its questioned geopolitical reputation.

Hackl, Andreas. « Exiles at home : mobility, exclusion and (in)visibility among Palestinians in Tel Aviv ». Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/23455.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis explores intersecting processes of inclusion and exclusion among Palestinians in Tel Aviv, a city considered to be essentially Jewish-Israeli. It looks at Palestinians from diverse backgrounds and statuses who engage with the city in search of employment, higher education, political activism, or an urban lifestyle. Although this self-consciously liberal city creates social and economic openings, unequal power relations and conflict prevail over urban civility and citizenship. The Palestinians face a paradox: the deeper their inclusion into Tel Aviv’s political economy, the stronger their estrangement and the more serious their dilemmas. Because their urban inclusion is limited, mobility and constant adaptation become obligatory and eventually disempowering. As they oscillate between conflicting desires and senses of solidarity or identification, the Palestinians in Tel Aviv struggle with intersecting forms of cultural and political power. They seek individual opportunities within a political system they oppose, demand recognition of their identity and history but also seek urban anonymity as unmarked individuals. Their balancing acts resemble acrobats: they walk a tightrope between contradictory worlds, unable to reconcile both into a stable balance and simultaneously prevented from ever fully arriving at the other end. They live in exile ‘at home’.

Konopinski, Natalie. « Ordinary security : an ethnography of security practices and perspectives in Tel Aviv ». Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4166.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Anthropological approaches to contexts of violence and conflict often focus on the exceptional and extraordinary moment of violence or its memory, leaving little room for the ordinary ways in and through which much conflict is lived. How might conflict and violence permeate ordinary practice, daily events and experience? What about the mundane and anticipatory moments through which violence may be predicted, anticipated and waited upon? This thesis explores ordinary security perspectives and practices among Jewish-Israelis in Tel Aviv. It is based on 21 months of ethnographic fieldwork among security guards, civil guards and city residents between 2005 and 2007 as they do and discuss bitachon (security). Participant observation with street-level security staff, with civil guard patrols and within the critical activities and conversations at a local neighbourhood kiosk café all explore practices, perspectives and experiences of security. This thesis argues that security practices that are often invoked as a precaution against danger and a provider of protection may paradoxically produce a sense of even more danger, uncertainty and insecurity. Security is not only about spectacular conflicts or strategic concepts but is also engaged with and experienced through mundane and ordinary social life. As well as claiming to protect the nation-state or managing strategic threats, security is also a kind of practice and emotion; an atmosphere, activity, and a feeling. Security is not only about extraordinary events and explosive situations, but also about a particular kind of waiting; an uncertain and boring anticipation of potential violence to come. It may be less about performance, legibility, or defence against dangerous others, than the identification of intimate and illegible populations, the playing out of racialized notions of danger and the ethno-nationalist uncertainties of the nation-state. In this context, collective anxieties and insecurities may be brought about not by the scale or magnitude of security threats, but by the perceived incapacity and protective impotence of the state. This thesis contributes to the anthropology of conflict and violence, the anthropology of Israel/Palestine and urban anthropology more generally. It points towards ways in which anthropology may meaningfully contribute to and enter dialogue with security studies, and argues in favour of an ordinary approach to the analysis of conflict and security.

Kovrigaro, Rivka. « The impact of total quality management on three secondary schools in Israel : "improvement through total quality management (T.Q.M.)?" : the perception of headteachers and staff in three Tel-Aviv secondary schools ». Thesis, University of Leicester, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31003.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis focuses on perceptions about the application of the T.Q.M. approach within three secondary schools which have a high rate of Russian newcomer students in the Tel-Aviv area. This study indicates that the staff, with their commitment to the schools' aims especially to the academic ones, had substantial reservations regarding the usefulness and the implementation of the T.Q.M. approach as a whole in these schools. This may be explained by the inadequacy of some T.Q.M. key factors such as 'zero-defects' or 'customer-centered approach' in the educational setting where education is perceived as a trial and error process. This research indicates that there are robust monitoring systems as well as collegiality and accountability of the staff in the three schools, and a culture which supports the idea of continuous quality improvement. In effect, the pre-requisites for the implementation of the T.Q.M. methods namely, management-led process, cultural change and finally data gathering and analysis as a means of monitoring quality and measuring change, have been achieved. Nevertheless, the attitudes towards the overall success of these schools is attributed mainly to the unusual quality of the Russian students. An additional aspect which rejects the usefulness of industrial elements of the T.Q.M. approach is that T.Q.M. has proved adequate only in coping with issues such as leadership, culture and relationships which could have been addressed anyway through the paradigms of school improvement and effectiveness. Hence, the industrial procedures and concepts have been perceived as mainly inadequate to apply in these schools where heterogeneous groups, teachers' expertise, ethical, discipline and academic values are considered to be the milestones of these schools. Apparently, another managerial approach should be sought which may more appropriately address these issues.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Tel Aviv's architecture and urban fabric were shaped by the forces of the nationalist movement of Hebrew Revivalism and the progressivist modern movements. A series of local circumstances including the Arab-Israeli conflict and the clash of values and memories introduced by different immigrant groups have also played an important role in Tel Aviv's identity. The search for a suitable architectural language capable of representing the New Hebrew collective identity entered a new phase when Modernism was adopted as the National Style. Tel Aviv's urban and architectural transformations mirror the changes in the collective identity of its residents as it rapidly evolved from its role as the locus of the Hebrew national revivalists to a cosmopolitan outward looking urban center. Progressivist obsessions brought about periods of amnesia during which the city failed to recognized some of its own "permanences" and as a result became self destructive. Whether these dynamics relate back to the Hebraic concepts of Space-Time is left open as a subject for speculation.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
A distributed approach is proposed for planning a cooperative tracking task for a team of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In the scenario of interest UAVs are required to autonomously track, using their onboard sensors, a moving target in a known urban environment. The solution methodology involves finding visibility regions, from which a UAV can maintain a line of sight to the target during the scenario; and restricted regions, in which a UAV can not fly, due to the presence of buildings or other airspace limitations. A co-evolution genetic algorithm is derived for searching, in realtime, monotonically improving solutions. In the proposed distributed search method every UAV iteratively manipulates its own population of chromosomes, each encoding its control inputs in the calculated horizon. Team performance is attained by assigning fitness to each solution in the population based on the cooperative performance when using it together with preceding iteration tracking information obtained from teammates. Important attributes of the proposed solution approach are its scalability and robustness; and consequently it can be applied to large sized problems and adapt to the loss of UAV team members. The distributed nature of the algorithm also reduces the computation and communication loads. The performance of the algorithm is studied using a high fidelity simulation test-bed incorporating a visual database of the city of Tel-Aviv, Israel.

A área temática do estudo é Clinica Médica.

Project Title: "Development of a plasmid-based reverse genetics system for the Bluetongue and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease viruses to allow comparative characterization of the function of the NS3 viroporin in viral egress". Project details: No - IS-4192-09; Participants – Ehrlich M. (Tel Aviv University), Parker J.S. (Cornell University), DermodyT.S. (Vanderbilt University); Period - 2009-2013. Orbiviruses are insect-borne infectious agents of ruminants that cause diseases with considerable economical impact in Israel and the United States. The recent outbreaks of BTV in Europe and of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (EHDV) in Israel, underscore the need for: (i) a better comprehension of the infection process of orbiviruses, (ii) the identification of unique vs. common traits among different orbiviruses, (iii) the development of novel diagnosis and treatment techniques and approaches; all aimed at the achievement of more effective control and treatment measures. It is the context of these broad goals that the present project was carried out. To fulfill our long-term goal of identifying specific viral determinants of virulence, growth, and transmission of the orbiviruses, we proposed to: (i) develop reverse genetics systems for BTV and EHDV2-Ibaraki; and (ii) identify the molecular determinants of the NS3 nonstructural protein related to viroporin/viral egress activities. The first objective was pursued with a two-pronged approach: (i) development of a plasmid-based reverse genetics system for BTV-17, and (ii) development of an "in-vitro" transcription-based reverse genetics system for EHDV2-Ibaraki. Both approaches encountered technical problems that hampered their achievement. However, dissection of the possible causes of the failure to achieve viral spread of EHDV2-Ibaraki, following the transfection of in-vitro transcribed genomic segments of the virus, revealed a novel characteristic of EHDV2-Ibaraki infection: an uncharacteristically low fold increase in titer upon infection of different cell models. To address the function and regulation of NS3 we employed the following approaches: (i) development (together with Anima Cell Metrology) of a novel technique (based on the transfection of fluorescently-labeledtRNAs) that allows for the detection of the levels of synthesis of individual viral proteins (i.e. NS3) in single cells; (ii) development of a siRNA-mediated knockdown approach for the reduction in levels of expression of NS3 in EHDV2-Ibaraki infected cells; (iii) biochemical and microscopy-based analysis of the localization, levels and post-translational modifications of NS3 in infected cells. In addition, we identified the altered regulation and spatial compartmentalization of protein synthesis in cells infected with EHDV2-Ibaraki or the mammalian reovirus. In EHDV2-Ibaraki-infected cells such altered regulation in protein synthesis occurs in the context of a cell stress reponse that includes the induction of apoptosis, autophagy and activation of the stressrelated kinase c-Jun N-terminal Kinase (JNK). Interestingly, inhibition of such stress-related cellular processes diminishes the production of infectious virions, suggesting that EHDV usurps these responses for the benefit of efficient infection. Taken together, while the present project fell short of the generation of novel reverse genetics systems for orbiviruses, the development of novel experimental approaches and techniques, and their employment in the analysis of EHDV-infected cells, yielded novel insights in the interactions of orbiviruses with mammalian cells.
